I was treated to a wonderful surprise evening on Saturday, when Rick took me to the San Francisco Parlour Opera. For the uninitiated (and that included me!), the Parlour Opera is dedicated to bringing opera to you in a much more intimate, relatable way. Kind of like a micro-opera for the masses.

Each opera is staged in someone’s home, and this performance of Massenet’s Thaïs was at a wonderful, wonderful Victorian mansion on Fell Street. I actually had no idea homes like this existed in San Francisco, but now I’ve seen how the other half live, I’m green with envy! It was like stepping back in time to the age of Gosford Park. Minus the servants, of course.

Walking in, we were greeted with delicious wine, and took our seats in the drawing room. The action moved around all night, and we saw a couple of acts outside in the garden, from balcony seats on the outside stairs! Luckily we were dressed up warm. The small cast was excellent, and an English-speaking narrator kept us on track when we couldn’t understand all the French. Having never been to the opera before, this was a great way to be introduced to it, and better still, the night ended with dessert and mingling with the performers. What a fabulous evening.

Of course, one of the best bits for me was the opportunity to look around such an incredible house. As a lover of the macabre, I particularly appreciated a few more sinister decorative touches, as my photos show.

If you have the chance, the Parlour Opera is one of those great San Francisco experiences. I had the chance to be exposed to opera without feeling intimidated or overwhelmed and it was a lot of fun. Bravo!

Parece que faz um século que não escrevo por aqui… Ups! Realmente faz um século… ou quase isso! A verdade é que o tempo tem passado mais ráido do que eu desejo e as tarefas profissionais e pessoais tem assumido uma grande parte do meu dia. rs!

Na última semana, porém, o corpo resolveu dar uma pausa forçada… Tive uma crise de refluxo e uma infecção no rosto. rs! Ok Ok. Já passou tudo.. Menos o cansaço do dia-a-dia… O sr. Hurpia também tem ficado bem lotado de trabalhos e ocupado com sua fazenda virtual (a Farmville, do Facebook), que aliás vicia…

Mas para retomar o rítmo do blog, aqui estou para postar as fotos do último encontro do pessoal do meu futuro-novo condomínio, o Terrazza Marina. Dia 31 de outubro – AFE faz um tempo – foi niver da Tha. Ai resolvemos reunir todos para um bom churrasco, com direito a bolinho banhado a muita run e brigadeiros deliciosos…

We flew in and out of Penang, where we spent half of the week. The other half we spent in Langkawi. It proved a decent mix of city and countryside, culture and relaxation, with stays in three locations.

Thrills and refreshment at Langkawi's Seven Wells

 

CENANG

The morning ferry from Penang to Langkawi necessitated a pre-dawn wakening in order to drive from Batu Ferringhi to Georgetown, drop off the hire car and walk to the port (no taxis being available at that time) in time for check-in 45 minutes before departure. Consequently we got to drive through a pretty sunrise and negotiate a sleepy Georgetown before the city and its inhabitants fully woke.

The boat ride was smooth and I soon fell asleep and caught up a little on the hours missed with the early start. Sleeping a portion of the 2.5-hour journey meant it passed very quickly.

We got a taxi from the Langkawi port in Kuah to Pantai Kok, reportedly the best beach on the island, but on arrival found that the guesthouse we were looking for had closed in the couple of years or so since the Rough Guide I was consulting was published. Since Pantai Kok is otherwise populated by high-end resorts (above our budget), the driver recommended we go to Cenang instead. Fair enough – it was said to be the second-best beach on the island, and not as developed as Kuah, the island capital.

We checked in to the AB Motel, which at RM100 (20 pounds) per night was an absolute steal – just 20 metres from the white-sand beach, boasting a large en-suite room, two double beds, air con, fridge, TV and verandah, and in walking distance of anything of significance in Cenang. We couldn’t have asked for more.

As we had already seen a decent stretch of the coast and countryside thanks to the aborted attempt to stay in Pantai Kok – further from Kuah than Cenang, at the western end of the island – we decided to simply spend our first day hanging around Cenang and relaxing. An excellent Chinese lunch was followed by a stroll along the beach and a swim.

As is my habit, when I saw a broken beer bottle on the sea floor, I picked it up and intended to return it to shore. It was only when a white tentacle started to wriggle out of it that I realised an octopus had made its home inside the green glass! Ingenious, I thought, as the sides of the glass offered both armour and a smooth, firm anchoring point for its suckers. Not knowing – or wishing to find out – what would happen if one of the tentacles was to attach to my skin, I dropped the bottle back where I’d found it.

Cenang was light on nightlife options, although there was a decent beach bar with a live reggae band which looked the part but vocally would never be confused with the icons they covered. Still, I find reggae music of any kind always suits an evening on a tropical island beach.

We returned to Pantai Kok the next day – not in search of luxury resorts or defunct guesthouses, but to visit the Seven Wells – a river leading to a dramatic waterfall and featuring seven pools connected by slippery rocks which are safe and fun to slide down.

It’s a hot and humid hike up the mountain – and any rustling of bags will attract the attentions of naughty, snack-hunting monkeys – but that just makes the eventual dip in the river all the more welcome.

The Seven Wells lead to what would literally be a deadly drop off the waterfall, so thankfully a couple of flimsy wires stretch across the penultimate pool. It’s a half-hearted effort as far as death-prevention goes, but really, no harm will come to anyone who displays a bit of common sense and doesn’t go too near the edge.

A walk back down to the base of the waterfall provides further swimming opportunities and the scene for some dramatic photos. After that, we considered a ride on the Langkawi cable car to the summit of the mountain, but rain was threatening so we retreated to the hotel.

The rain did indeed descend with some force that evening, ruling out a return to the beach bar, but an excellent dinner of grilled cockles and stingray sufficed.

Our final full day in Langkawi saw us take a tour to Pulau Payar Marine Park. It is one of the most heavily-advertised tourist attractions in the region, with videos and documentation showing delightful images of snorkelling and diving amid coral and hand-feeding colourful fish and even sharks. It looked irresistible, so we plumped for that over other excursions, including a three-island boat trip or a mangrove tour.

The island was indeed delightful – pristine sea water brimming with fish, uninhabited land and stunning views from the hilltop – but in hindsight, there was no reason to take an organised tour there rather than the normal, scheduled ferry service.

The tour staff were, of course, friendly and knowledgeable, but aside from that the only things they provided besides the transport was a snorkel set and a packed lunch – both of which you could buy in Cenang anyway.

So the “tour” amounted to a bus and boat ride to a single desination, a talk, a basic lunch and the provision of equipment. Besides that, we were left to our own devices for a half-day. Don’t get me wrong, Pulau Payar itself is well worth visiting, and it is quite charming to be surrounded by schools of fish – tiny, bright ones up to seabass, non-aggressive sharks and even one enormous grouper – attracted by scraps of bread. It’s just that the organised tour to the island did not offer value for money at RM100 per person.

Rain curtailed another trip to the beach bar, so we spent our final night out in Langkawi at the only other watering hole we could find in Cenang, which I can’t remember the name of but was run by a British guy who was celebrating his birthday that night, so the place was busy and boasting a party atmosphere. We stayed until 3am, and with beers starting at just RM3 (60p), and our return ferry to Penang not until 2.30pm, there was no reason not to!

The return to Penang was simply for convenience, as we would fly back to Bangkok one day later. We stayed again at the Broadway Budget Hotel, had a low-key Friday night out on Jalan Penang (the hangover from the previous night in Langkawi was still in the memory) and then killed a few hours before the afternoon flight on Saturday by visiting Fort Cornwallis, a British colonial military defence fort which was never actually used in battle.

In all, the holiday offered a good mix of culture, fun and relaxation, which is just right for a one-week vacation. I found Malaysian people – whether indigenous, Chinese or Indian – to be very friendly and for the most part fair and honest – something that is unfortunately sometimes missing from the tourist’s experience in other parts of South East Asia. The food was good and costs were comparable with Thailand, and in some cases certain things were even cheaper. It is officially a Muslim country but there no restrictions on dress, drink or other standard pursuits of a Western or Thai tourist. Waew proclaimed it the “best trip ever”, and while she is far from as well-travelled as me, it was certainly among my more enjoyable holidays, too.

Como pode deixar com que um talento musical, uma voz potente, um estilo marcante e tudo-mais-que-ela-é sair assim… Thais Bonizzi, uma das mulheres mais talentosas a passar pelo Ídolos saiu na 3ª fase das finais, em 10º lugar, sem merecer, em nenhuma das fases, ficar entre as menos votadas… Simplesmente irritante!!!

Marcos Duarte faz uma maldade com a música de Alexandre Pires, errou a letra inúmeras vezes, cantou terrivelmente mal e continuou na competição… Não dá pra entender… Por que?????

Bom, alguns comentários sobre as duas fases: Priscila Borges, Diego Morais e Saulo Roston, simplesmente perfeitos. A apresentação da Priscila cantando Olhos nos Olhos arrepiou dos pés à cabeça (sexo geral!!!), e Diego Morais cantando As Rosas não falam também foi excepcional…

Julio vem decaindo muito! Afobado, sem fôlego, o que tá acontecendo??? Marcos Paulo, sempre normal… nada excepcional… O restante, foi bem…

Ótimo a Raquel ter saído, merecia faz tempo! Mas manter os dois Marcos e tirar a Thais??

Khorat Top Thai is an excellent choice for take away. You can choose from a large menu and their prices are not too expensive. So prepare for a warm night curled up in your bed with a bowl filled with a delicious red curry. Located near the Vondelpark at the 2e Constantijn Huygenstraat 64 (Oud-West – 683 12 97).

Right from work you might go to Thai Deum. Great food, lovely atmosphere and gentle service. Located in De Pijp, Ceintuurbaan 210 you’ll find a true Thai experience. It can be a little bit chaotic, but that definitely has its charm. A great place to release pressure after a day at the office.

Are you into a more serious dinner, you might want to go to Ko Chang. The tables are beautifully decorated with a flower and an elephant. This small place breathes Thai atmospere and serves good food. The service is outstanding. Located at the Westerstraat 91, 638 10 39

Do you want a fashionable and trendy ambiance, then go to to Kinnaree at the 1e Anjeliersdwarsstraat in the Jordaan. Look at the trendy cushions and their wall! It’s authentic Thai food in Modern interior. Excellent combination.

For special occasions only! White Elephant is a true delight. The most outstanding Thai food is served here, or maybe I’d better call it cuisine. The prices are accordingly, but it’s absolutely worth the investment. Their starter Miang Kham, wit piper sarmentosum, is magic! You’ll find this wonderful place at the Van Woustraat 3, 679 55 56.

The Venerable Pelagia

Pelagia was a repentant sinner. She was born to pagan parents in Antioch, and was endowed by God with great physical beauty. Pelagia used her beauty to the destruction of her own soul and those of others. She became very wealthy as a result of her prostitution.

Once, while walking past the Church of the Holy Martyr Julian, in which Bishop Nonnus was preaching, she stopped in and heard a sermon on the Dread Judgment and the punishment of sinners. Those words so shook her and changed her that she immediately felt revulsion for herself, acquired true fear of God, repented of all her sins and fell down before St. Nonnus with the plea that he baptize her: ” Have mercy on me, a sinner, holy Father. Baptize me and teach me repentance-I am a sea of iniquity, an abyss of destruction, a net and weapon of the devil.”

Thus this penitent begged the hierarch of Christ with tears, and he baptized her. At her baptism, Blessed Romana, the deaconess of the church, was her godmother. Romana, as her spiritual mother, grounded her well in the Christian Faith. But Pelagia was not satisfied with baptism alone. She was keenly aware of the multitude of her sins and, pricked by her conscience, decided on a great ascetic labor. She left her enormous, sinfully gained wealth to the poor, and secretly went to Jerusalem as the monk Pelagius. There, she shut herself up in a cell on the Mount of Olives, and began the difficult ascesis of fasting, prayer and all-night vigils.

After three years, St. Nonnus’s deacon, James, visited her and found her still alive, but when he visited her again several days later, he found that she had reposed, and he honorably buried her body. St. Pelagia entered into rest in about the year 461.

Thus, this formerly terrible sinner pleased God by her repentance and labor, was forgiven of her sins, and became sanctified. And her purified and enlightened soul was deemed worthy of the Kingdom of God.

The Venerable Thais

Thais was a repentant sinner. She was an Egyptian by birth. Like St. Pelagia, Thais also spent her youth in unrestrained fornication. Thais was directed in this evil way of life by her shameless mother. But the merciful God, Who does not desire the death of a sinner, but salvation, found a way in His wondrous providence to save the sinner Thais.

One of the disciples of St. Anthony the Great, Paphnutius the Sindonite, heard of Thais’s sinful life, and the spiritual poison with which she was poisoning the souls of many men. He decided to save her, with God’s help. Clothed in secular clothing, St. Paphnutius took one gold coin and went to the city. He found Thais and gave her the gold coin. Thais, thinking that this man gave her the gold coin for an impure act, took Paphnutius into her room. Then Paphnutius opened his blessed mouth and denounced Thais’s sins and called her to repentance.

Thais’s soul and conscience were both awakened, and she burst into tears of profound, sincere repentance. Distributing all her goods to the poor, she entered a convent at the instruction of St. Paphnutius, and remained there for about three years, closed off in a cell, living only on bread and water. St. Paphnutius visited her before her death, and brought her out of her cell against her will. She soon fell ill, and after a brief illness gave up her purified and sanctified soul to God. St. Paul the Simple, another disciple of St. Anthony, saw in a vision a most beautiful habitation in Paradise, prepared by God for St. Thais the penitent. This holy soul entered into rest in the year 340.

REFLECTION

Oh, if only we would invest as much effort in our souls as we invest in our bodies!

Oh, if only we could become as desirous of adorning ourselves with virtue before God and His glorious angels, as we do with the vain, transitory, external displays of appearances!

At first, both Pelagia and Thais were only aware of theier bodies, while their souls were slaves bound in the prison of the body. Both were adorned with nothing but vanity: clothed in vanity, arrayed with vanity, surrounded by vanity, and flattered by vanity.

But what a sudden change! What a divine turn of events in their lives! More wondrous than if a wild apple were to be grafted and begin to bring forth sweet fruits; or if a turgid, fetid swamp were suddenly to become clear, pure potable water.

When Bishop Nonnus, in the company of other bishops, first saw the sinner Pelagia in her outward splendor-clothed in the most expensive garments, adorned and bedecked with rings, necklaces and baubles, perfumed, and surrounded by slaves-Bishop Nonnus began to weep, and said to his companions:

” In truth, I have learned much from this woman. The Lord will set her before His Dread Judgment and will rebuke us through her. How many hours does this woman spend in her room bathing herself, clothing herself, adorning herself, and looking at herself in the mirror-and for what? Only to appear more beautiful to men. And we, who have the immortal Bridegroom in heaven, do not strive to adorn our souls with repentance; we do not hasten to bathe them with the tears of repentance and clothe them in the beauty of the virtues, that they might appear more beautiful before the eyes of God!”

São elas Hélen Bitencout, Danielle Rodrigues de Morais, Priscila Borges da Silva, Thais Ferraz de Andrade Bonizzi, Taissa de Araujo Lobo e Raquel da Silva Soares. O sexteto feminino irá se juntar aos seis homens selecionados na semana passada – Diego Moraes, Marcos Paulo, Saulo Roston, Evandro Elias, Marcos Duarte e Júlio César.

A alegria dos 12 finalistas

Sobre a mansão:

O endereço da casa é segredo. O lugar está sendo preparado para receber as 12 estrelas de nossa música brasileira. Na temporada anterior do programa, exibida em 2008, os finalistas passavam essa etapa de concentração em um hotel.

A mansão, em estilo colonial americano, tem 2.500 m² de terreno, com 1.000 m² de área construída. O espaço vai comportar um estúdio para que os participantes possam passar suas músicas e ensaiar com a treinadora vocal e um preparador corporal antes de subir ao palco. Todos os finalistas ficarão divididos em quatro quartos. Para os momentos de lazer, haverá uma sala de ginástica e uma de convivência. A alimentação também será balanceada, contando com o auxílio de uma nutricionista.

Todos os bastidores dessa mansão serão mostrados no ar a partir do dia 13 de outubro, data em que se inicia a fase dos Concertos. Nessa etapa, o público vai decidir pelo voto quem continua na competição e, a cada semana, um finalista será eliminado.

BB Gun / Paintball und Siam Park

Viel Action mit ein wenig Schwund……

… wie heist es doch so schön…. Ungeschicktes Fleisch muss ab….

Das letzte Wochenende im September waren wir Paintball schießen. Diese Lust bestand schon in Deutschland, aber nein, in Thailand mit Temperaturen über 33 Grad haben wir es dann gespielt

Mit Langarm Overall, Woll-Gesichtsmaske/Mütze, Schutzweste und Helm (ich wiederhole, bei Temperaturen über 33 Grad) sind wir dann ins Gelände. Da wir alle das noch nie gespielt hatten, fingen wir im “Kinder Gehege” an. Da standen riesige weiße Luftkissen / Gebilde wo sich jeder hinter versteckte und dann fleißig versuchte den Gegner abzuschießen. Bei der Einweisung, wie man sich zu verhalten hatte, lief uns schon die Suppe den Beinen runter und es kam uns vor wie Stunden…. Umso lustiger war es dann, als es losging, und sich erst mal keiner wirklich getraut hatte, sich von seinem Schutzwall fortzubewegen.

2 Runden im “Kinder Gehege” und dann ging es ab ins große freie Gehege. Das hat richtig Laune gemacht. Sich hinter Baume und Hecken zu verstecken, über den Boden zu robben, um sich an die Gegner anzuschleichen, war echt geil, auch wenn man vor lauter Schweiß durchnässt war

Kathy hat sich super geschlagen. Im Ganzen waren wir 5 Männer und 2 Frauen. Zum Schluss waren nur noch Kathy und Kwesi im Rennen, und da Kathy keine Munition mehr hatte, hatte Kwesi das ganze gewonnen. Natürlich hat man hier Blessuren davon getragen. Kathy hatte 2 ganz heftige Einschläge an Schulter und Oberarm abbekommen, welche sich in den darauf folgenden Tagen ziemlich blau/lila und hinterher grün/gelb färbten

Thorsten hatte lediglich ne Beule am Kopf davon getragen, was aber nicht wirklich schlimm war. Denn, wir wollen das auf jeden Fall noch einmal machen aber eher im Dezember oder Januar, wenn die Temperaturen knapp unter 30 Grad liegen

Erstes Wochenende im Oktober waren wir im Siam Park. Ein Park aufgebaut wie Freizeitpark Rust oder Phantasialand, nur grösser mit Safari Park und Wasserpark.

Dieser Tag war für den Wasserpark geplant, wo wir gegen halb elf morgens bis abends kurz vor sechs, waren. Mit riesigem Wellenbad und Monsterrutschen genossen wir den Tag. In wie so üblich musste Kathy mal wieder verarztet werden. Beim Rutschen hat sie sich den Nagel samt Nagelbett (Fleisch) aufgerissen. Und die Frauen die auch künstliche Nägel haben, wissen wie schmerzvoll das Ganze ist. Also ab mit Ihr in den FIRST AID (Erste Hilfe) und behandeln lassen. Der Nagel wurde komplett runter geschnitten, dann mit Jod und Pflaster verarztet, und für Kathy war Schluss mit Rutschen. Der Tag war aber trotzdem sehr schön, und neue (rötliche) Farbe haben wir auch getankt

Beim Eintrittspreis zum Wasserpark hatte man noch eine Freizeitpark Attraktion seiner Wahl frei. Also sind wir (ohne Thorsten) noch auf die Looping Bahn (Boomerang) gegangen. Oh wow…. Kathy war seit bestimmt 10 Jahren nicht mehr auf einer Achterbahn, und kam daher mit etwas zittrigen Knieen wieder von der Bahn

Was die nächsten Wochenenden so passiert, wissen wir noch nicht, aber wir haben noch so einiges vor….

nächstes Wochenende kommt bald….Ende Oktober geht’s nach Koh Samui.

En dicho evento que se realiza cada 2 años, se darán cita más de 200 expositores de distintos países, cada uno de los cuales exhibirá al público asistente los productos y servicios que aportan valor a la Industria de la Pesca y de la Acuicultura en el Perú.

En esta edición de la Expo, Refricentro dará a conocer las fortalezas que lo han posicionado en el mercado peruano como un actor relevante en el diseño y ejecución de plantas frigoríficas. Entre los productos a exhibir podemos destacar la Cortina de Rollo Rápido, dedicada tanto a aplicaciones industriales de alimentos, como a los requerimientos de la Gran Minería; y los Compresores de Tornillo para freón, tema que será tratado en profundidad en una de las Charlas a dictar por nuestro Gerente de la División Refrigeración Industrial, durante el evento, en la Sala de Exhibidores del mismo recinto.

“Os assasinos estão livres…”

Citando o meu caro Renatinho, inicío este post em clima pós-fúnebre! Anúncio o término do meu relacionamento e início de uma nova-era em minha vida!
“Re Nascimento” é um pseudônimo que adotei por conta das coisas que amo, que me dão força pra prosseguir. Por muitas e muitas vezes eu tive altos e baixos, e digamos que os baixos foram BEM baixos, chegando à “morrer” pra mim mesmo, porém sempre tenho forças pra “renascer”, tal qual a ave fênix que ressurge das cinzas, eu vejo em mim força, não para lutar e conseguir, mas para perseverar em busca de algo.

Domingo agora, compatriotas de toda a Nação, iremos nos encontrar nas escolas, nas ruas, campos e construções, caminhando pra fazer o vestibular! Vamos agora acertar as contas com a Uerj que diz à nós discalcúlicos: -Morram!; Mas nós diremos de volta: -Morra tu, bitch!; e de lá saíremos vitoriosos e com nossa aprovação!
Estou prestando vest da Uerj pra Artes Visuais, oque é meu plano, porém queria entrar pra uma república, uma coisa mais social, mas vamos ver no que dá! Se nada der certo eu vou pra uma particular!
Bom, estive fazendo algumas fotos pra um book de 15 anos de uma amiga e umas de moda com uma amiga que é maquiadora, seu nome é Thaís Carneiro, ou “Morenaluah”.

É um dos livros infantis mais bonitos que eu já li.  Tem trechos lindos e a histórias das “frangas” são muito legais.

Achei lindo o fato de Caio Fernando Abreu ter escrito esse livro como se ele fosse uma criança. Gosto quando ele diz “agora pensei outro pensamento de gente grande…”.

Ele escreveu como se estivesse conversando com alguém.  É muito legal parar para reparar o modo como o escritor escreve.

Não acho que o livro tenha falhas, gostei de tudo, inclusive das ilustrações

“É assim vezenquando, uma coisa só começa a existir quando você começa a prestar atenção na existência dela.  Quando a gente começa a gostar duma pessoa, é bem assim.”

Eu sempre recomendo o que leio para a mesma pessoa, que é a Janaína.  Então recomendo pra ela porque eu sei que ela quer ler, porque eu mandei uns trechos para ela.  Mas eu também vou recomendar pra Thaís porque é engraçadinha a história e combina com ela.
