The Truth Of The LORD Some things are short and sweet. Psalm 117 is just that. It is the shor

The Truth Of The LORD

Some things are short and sweet. Psalm 117 is just that. It is the shortest book in the whole Bible — and it just happens to also be the middle chapter in the Bible. So here it is, all two verses of it.

Praise the LORD,  all nations;
Laud Him,  all peoples!
For His lovingkindness is great toward us,
And the truth of the LORD is everlasting.
Praise the LORD!

All peoples and all nations are to laud and praise the LORD. The LORD is not the Creator and Redeemer of the Jewish nation only. He is the Creator and Redeemer of absolutely everyone — without exception. People may not want to admit it, but that does not change the truth.

Our whole reason for praising the LORD every day is because “His lovingkindness is great toward us.” People like to put blinders on and not admit their inability to take care of everything in their lives all by themselves. When they are blessed with relief from a long-felt grief, they are happy for themselves, but do not thank the LORD who so blessed them. People just tend to be ungrateful and stubborn.

In spite of our sinfulness, the LORD is still loving and kind towards us — much more than we could ever deserve. So, in order to do things right and set the record straight, we do need to praise and laud the LORD for His merciful kindness towards us.

Right here, in the middle chapter of God’s word, we are confronted with — “the truth of the LORD is everlasting.” That is exactly why we can be glad to put our faith in all of God’s word. It’s not going to be here today and gone tomorrow like other books. Because God is Almighty and eternal, His truth is eternal. The truths of God existed long before there was an earth — and they will be everlasting.

So, when we see and understand that, it behooves us to live according to that word. Why should we let ourselves get suckered into living like unbelievers, who will be condemned for their unbelief. Because the truth of the LORD is everlasting, we can trust it and live by it.

That is good reason to “Praise the LORD!” We’re in good hands when we’re with the LORD.

As we start thinking about all the blessings we have received, we say, “Hallelujah! My Lord, You have faithfully loved me and cared for me for so long. Thank You for being so kind and patient, even when I didn’t deserve it.”

Love,
Margaret

“Thank God It’s Christmas” is a Christmas single by British rock band Queen. It was written by guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor. The single spent six weeks in the UK charts during the Christmas/New Year period and reached number 21.

Though not released on any Queen studio album, the song appears on Queen’s Greatest Hits III, released in 1999. The song was also released as the B-side of the single “A Winter’s Tale” from the 1995 album Made in Heaven.

No promotional video was filmed for the track, hampering its future use on music TV channels. For that reason it is a lesser known Christmas single. It also appears on several Christmas compilation albums. One of them is the original Now That’s What I Call Christmas compilation released in 1985 but deleted in 1989.

Lyrics

Oh my love we’ve had our share of tears
Oh my friend we’ve had our hopes and fears
Oh my friends it’s been a long hard year
But now it’s Christmas
Yes it’s Christmas
Thank God it’s Christmas

The moon and stars seem awful cold and bright
Let’s hope the snow will make this Christmas right
My friend the world will share this special night
Because it’s Christmas
Yes it’s Christmas
Thank God it’s Christmas
For one night

Thank God it’s Christmas yeah
Thank God it’s Christmas
Thank God it’s Christmas
Can it be Christmas?
Let it be Christmas
Ev’ry day

Oh my love we’ve lived in troubled days
Oh my friend we have the strangest ways
All my friends on this one day of days
Thank God it’s Christmas
Yes it’s Christmas
Thank God it’s Christmas
For one day

Thank God it’s Christmas
Yes it’s Christmas
Thank God it’s Christmas
Oooh yeah

Another beautiful day to be thankful for! Today I am grateful for health and life… For the inf

Another beautiful day to be thankful for!

Today I am grateful for health and life… For the infinite love of and for my incredible Twin Flame husband and our two boys… For a nature hike filled with hills and trees, gentle breezes and lilting steps… For peaceful time alone in the house (a precious commodity!), spent cooking with so much appreciation for the life force of the food, and time to eat together… For the opportunity to help people through my work and to prosper in doing so… For a warm home and even-warmer heart.

What are YOU thankful for right now? (comments welcome)

Thanksgiving may be over for 51 weeks more but every day that ends in Y is a day of blessings! MondaY, TuesdaY…

I invite you to share your thankful, heart-full reflections in comments on this site, as well as your own practices of gratitude. For example, my husband does gratitude journaling daily, listing what he is grateful for. I, too, journal with Spirit daily and always sign my love letters to the Source of All Good things “TYG” – Thank you, God! As a family, we give thanks with each and every meal and bless the food that it may turn into energy to fulfill our life purpose and be God’s hands here on Earth. I also take gratitude walks, create gratitude books with my children, and strive to live life as one Great Full praise for Creator and all of Creation. See my earlier entries for 5 Great Ways to Be More Great Full.

I don’t claim to be 100% “there yet” (if there is such a thing), but most people who know me say I am one of the happiest, most positive people they have ever met, and I certainly feel good, so I must be doing something right! I know that Life is a work in progress and that we can choose to feel grateful, to feel peaceful, to live in our hearts, moment by moment…

A Gift of Gratitude and Peace for You

So here, as my gift to you today, is a new, consciousness-enhancing meditation that will help you bring your awareness to the present moment and all of its delights, as well as calm, center, connect with the divine within and around you, and open your heart. Inspired by both Buddhist and yogic meditation methods, yet timeless and universal, this practice can transform your life – and your perception OF your life, which is at least as important, since the outer reflects the inner. The Breath of Gratitude Meditation is a simple yet profoundly powerful practice that will enhance your appreciation of life, the Universe and everything – instantly! Try it for free on my blog and see how much heartfulness and gratefulness (great fullness) you can allow yourself to feel.

Here is how you do the meditation, which, by the way, is portable, requires no props, altars, other people, special places, or resources of any kind, because you already, always, all ways, have ALL you need, within you and around you, right here, right now:

Sit peacefully, placing your hands over your heart chakra, that place where you feel strong emotions, in the center of your chest. You will know it’s the right spot when you feel an inner shift, like an “Ahhhhhhh” just by gently touching yourself there, like you are cradling yourself with love.

With your focus on your breath, begin to breathe IN something you are thankful for, anything that you appreciate right now. It could relate to your past, your present or even your future. With each breath OUT, send out gratitude to the Universe (God).

You are essentially experiencing a stream of heart consciousness that will change and flow with each breath as you maintain a focus on receiving blessings (inhaling) and sending out love and gratitude (exhaling).

For example, my Breath of Gratitude stream of heart consciousness went something like this, i.e. these were my thoughts and feelings accompanying my breaths:

Breathing in peace. Breathing out gratitude.

Breathing in beauty. Breathing out gratitude.

Breathing in joy. Breathing out gratitude.

Breathing in my husband. Breathing out gratitude.

Breathing in food. Breathing out gratitude.

Breathing in my oldest child. Breathing out gratitude.

Breathing in my youngest child. Breathing out gratitude.

Breathing in a good home. Breathing out gratitude.

Breathing in a beautiful Thanksgiving this year. Breathing out gratitude.

Breathing in music. Breathing out gratitude.

Breathing in laughter. Breathing out gratitude.

Breathing in breath itself. Breathing out gratitude.

Breathing in friends. Breathing out gratitude.

Breathing in my dog. Breathing out gratitude.

Breathing in a new computer (coming soon!). Breathing out gratitude.

Breathing in work I love. Breathing out gratitude.

Breathing in life. Breathing out gratitude.

Breathing in this moment. Breathing out gratitude.

Breathing in God. Breathing out gratitude.

and so on….

Of course, the heartful, mindful appreciative awareness you experience will be different from my own. In fact, it will be different from YOUR own because it will be new each time you do this meditation, from minute to minute and day to day.

I did this meditation in silence today with one of my private practice clients for about 10 minutes to begin our session, and we both felt an immediate and deep shift into greater awareness, appreciation and peace. Doing this Breath of Gratitude Meditation will enhance your spiritual path, and facilitate your “gratitude attitude” throughout the day, and throughout your life. As I shared in my earlier blogs, thankfulness is one of the best ways to keep the faucet of blessings open!

Why the placement of the hands over the heart center? Can it be coincidence that EVERY world religion and spiritual path recognizes the importance of this part of the human body and energy field? Did you ever wonder why humans the world over, throughout history (and herstory) pray by placing our hands together, in front of this center? Why, when we feel strong emotions, we place our hands over our chests? The heart contains a form of intelligence and intuition all its own, which is why Native American elders told Carl Jung, “We see why you white people are so unhappy so much of the time. It’s because you make decisions from your heads instead of your hearts.”

In Book 1 of my LoveLife! series, The Radical Self-Love Workbook, and in intuitive healing and coaching sessions, teleseminars and personal growth trainings, I share many more proven, holistic practices for your mind, body, heart and soul that are easy to fit into your busy life, field tested over 15 years in private practice with thousands of people. I have studied meditations all over the world and, in fact, designed and taught a Multicultural Meditation for Busy People program at Kaiser Permanente for years. I have also practiced meditation on a daily basis for 29 years, am an ordained interfaith minister as well as an intuitive life coach, and bring this expertise and personal experience to my teachings, healing and coaching work as well as my writings and, of course, meditation audios.

According to The Institute of Heart Math, a scientific research facility and think tank dedicated to studying and exploring the electromagnetic energy of the heart field and its universal importance for health and happiness, breathing with a focus simultaneously on appreciation and on the heart center (a.k.a. heart chakra or field) is the single most effective practice for increasing joy and inner peace.

So, divine being, enjoy The Breath of Gratitude Meditation!

Enjoy your life!

Many thanks for visiting my blog and for shining your light in this world!

With love,

Ahh, the smell of turkey, stuffing and freshly baked pumpkin pie. And how about that turkey skin?

Ahh, the smell of turkey, stuffing and freshly baked pumpkin pie. And how about that turkey skin? Mmm, Mmm, Mmm… you know, that’s where all the vitamins are! It’s now just a fading memory, so rather than prepping the bird, vacuuming, setting the table and talking about what we are thankful for, we can move on to the next season. Should we? Should our thanks be an annual event, fading alongside those fragrant aromas? Or should it be a consistent and daily offering to the God who made us? Let me present to you a few of the things for which I am thankful, and not just at Thanksgiving:

I am still breathing, even with Swine Flu and other stuff in the air
I have a roof over my head, even though the housing market has tanked
I have a wife who loves me, even with all of my quirks and faults
I have the greatest kids in the world, even though I may not always be a great dad
I have a grandson who calls me Uncle Al (don’t ask, cause I don’t know)
I still have a job, even though the company is closing
I have a job offer that may take the place of the old job
I have 27 good teeth remaining after having one extracted

Even if any of those things were to change for the worse, I still have a God who loves me, cares for me and wants the best for me, at all times and in all circumstances. Sometimes life doesn’t make sense. Sometimes life is painful. Sometimes we just don’t feel like God is anywhere to be found. Sometimes we want God to show up and take away all the discomfort and anxiety in our lives. Well, he actually did that some 2000 years ago on a cross. He reconciled us to himself, taking away our sins. Now he asks us to trust him and be patient, and there will be a time when every tear will be wiped away and there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain. Yes, I really do have many things for which I can give thanks (and should), any time of the year. Thanksgiving day is every day.

After a wonderful weekend with family and friends, it is back to the office for another week of “work”. Fortunately, I am one of the lucky ones. I believe in what I do for WQLN, I genuinely enjoy spending time with my colleagues, and I am currently fulfilling a long-time aspiration to work for a PBS station. So as we continue to give thanks for the things in life that bring us joy, today I add to my list WQLN and my Q-buddies.

Where else can you find such an incredible group of people making great strides to improve, change, and save lives every day? And I am not only referring to the work done for WQLN, I am also referring to the volunteer adventures the WQLN staff members embark on occasionally.

For example, today a crew of Q-buddies traveled to the Community Blood Bank to donate blood during the lunch hour. As a community-minded organization we feel our community is stronger when we all work together and that makes it easy and very satisfying to give – time, resources, and even blood! So this week as you continue giving thanks for all of the blessings in your life, why not volunteer for or donate resources to a local organization that is striving to fulfill a mission you believe in? Now more than ever, our community will be stronger with your help!

This morning I was thankful for dryer lint. I try to stay in a mindset of thankfulness, but . . . dryer lint?

DRYER LINT: fuzzy, useless stuff that collects in the dryer screen; an annoyance that must be cleaned out and thrown away. (from Jean’s book of definitions found only in her mind)

You see, I remember before dryer lint. I can remember baby blankets being hung on clothes lines with red, chapped, freezing hands. The baby blankets froze into pastel colored boards – hard as Formica on a cabinet top. I remember the winter wind jerking my hair and making my ears smart in the cold. It felt as though the wind was driving the cold right through my coat.

Later, I looked out the window to see that the wind had snapped the baby blankets in two – just like snapping a graham cracker – with the frozen halves tossing about the yard like tumble weeds in a desert ghost town. I had to run around the yard chasing after the pieces of blankets as the wind played “keep way” blowing them this way and that. Somehow I managed to get the broken blanket halves and bring them inside before they were blown clean out of sight.

Lest you think I am 839 years old, lots of people had automatic washing machines when I was growing up, but my mother was a Thoroughly Modern Millie. When I was a teenager we had the only washer/dryer combo machine I have ever seen. Daddy loved gadgets and inventions that saved time. He bought Mother a front loading machine that both washed and dried the clothes. I believe it was a Bendix, but it could have been a Maytag. We put in dry, dirty clothes and took out dry, clean clothes. And we had dryer lint. We were affluent and didn’t know it. See? I’m not that old.

Back to dryer lint. Dryer lint in the screen means I don’t have to go outside in the searing summer heat and hang clothes while fighting off mosquitoes or yellow jackets and I don’t have to worry about bird poo on my favorite blouse. The neighbor’s dog is not going to see my clothes dancing in the wind and think they are scary monsters he needs to attack, shredding my favorite quilt, and dragging my sheets through the mud.

Dryer lint means getting to stay inside in the freezing cold. I can wash on a rainy day if I want and get my clothes dry. It means I don’t have to starch and iron everything except my undies. Well, I guess that was a little TMI [too much information]. (blush) Forgive me.

Since I left home to marry at age 17, I’ve washed clothes in a wringer washer with two rinse tubs. It took all morning to do the wash and hang it on the line. Not to mention having to starch the outer clothes. Then taking them off the line, sprinkling them with water, rolling them up so they would mellow into the same dampness throughout . . . eating lunch . . . and then ironing all afternoon. There was lint, but it wasn’t in the dryer screen, it was on the clothes!

I’ve washed little boys jeans and dirty diapers in the bathtub when I had no washer at all, using my knuckles to scrub out the dirt, wringing them out by hand . . . my knuckles bleeding . . . and then hanging them on the line to dry. There was no dryer lint.

Dryer lint is not an annoyance. Dryer lint is a blessing. We take so much for granted. Probably more than half of the women in the world have never seen dryer lint. And to those women who still have to hang their clothes on a line; for those who have to wash their clothes in the creek or the river and hang them on bushes to dry, my heart goes out to you. May God bless you.

I have many, many blessings; and many, many things for which I am thankful. Thank you, Lord, for dryer lint and all it represents.

“to stand every morning to thank and praise the Lord, and likewise at evening;” I Chronicles 23:30

It’s that time of year again. The time of year when we cook 10 different foods for 6 hours straight, complain about how we’ll have to hit the treadmill again, invite all our friends and family to our house, sit at the table, stuff our faces, and be in an empty house all over again by the end of the day. But not for me.

It’s actually how things have been for me for the past couple of years (I believe since 2006). I was never in to the whole big Thanksgiving meal, so I’ve just popped a frozen pizza in the oven and called it a day. And it’s not just me. My brother and his family do the same thing. And the barista I talk to at one of my local coffee shops told me “Now that’s my kind of Thanksgiving!” when I said what I would be doing today.

Anyway, it was a good day today. The pizza was good, as always (DiGiorno is my favorite brand), and I was thankful! In my opinion, that is the most important thing of Thanksgiving. Being thankful for what we have. Personally, I am most thankful for my family, especially my parents. I believe that even if you don’t have a big dinner, the holiday is fine as long as you are thankful for something!

And cue the Christmas commercials…

Here are Ways #s 4 and 5 from the last post which promised you 5 Ways to Be More Great-full (Boost Your Gratitude Attitude)…

#4: FAMILY (or couple’s) GRATITUDE BOOK
We just spent a very pleasant hour doing this great art & writing interactive project. So simple and yet so meaningful and fun! Quality family time!

We do not watch television, nor do our children. We are dedicated to parenting consciously and strive to support a vibration of love in our household. Yet, given that my husband and I are both entrepreneurs, with seven businesses between the two of us, and given that our children are still quite young, we know how important and sometimes challenging it can be to come up ideas (not to mention time, energy and materials) for positive family experiences.

I myself am about the least craftsy person you will ever meet and can draw a stick figure on a good day! So believe me when I tell you: Yes, you CAN do this project, and probably with what’s already available in your home. It really ranks high on simple, high on fun, high on memorable, and low on expense. (I can NEVER do those Origami things, puuleeeeeazzze, can we talk?)

Thanksgiving weekend is the perfect time to do this Family Gratitude Book…but of course so is any day that ends in “y.” Monday, Tuesday…. Enjoy!

Materials:

All you need is:

Some blank paper (we used printer or copy paper, white)

Construction paper

Ribbon or brass brads to secure the book

Markers, pencils, hole punch and/or scissors

Optional: Stickers, stamps, other art supplies, scrapbook, photos

Definitely: A little bit of time and lots of love!

We started by making a brainstormed list of everything we are grateful for. You can do this any way you like; follow your own creative impulses & inspiration. We have four family members, so I decided to color code what we wrote on this collective page or you could just all write and draw without attributing who said/drew what, or make a chart, have sections of the page, etc. The things my 6-year-old called out first were written in yellow, my 10-year-old chose blue, I picked purple and my husband green. We made a color key on the page and wrote and drew various things we are thankful for: Our dog came first, followed by a lovely torrent such as family and friends, food, a good home, music, the Earth, music, health, God, life and so on.

Then I gave each family member a separate page on which to do whatever they like, the only requirement being that whatever is on the page relates to or represents what they are thankful for. We stuck in some more blank pages, so we can add more later as we are inspired.

The kids each got to pick a color for the front and back covers. The older did the words, the younger did the drawings. We punched holes, added brads, all signed the masterpiece and voila! A Family Gratitude Book.

Not only a wonderful way to spend part of our Thanksgiving Day, but a precious keepsake, and, I trust, a new family tradition as well. We will be sharing this book with family all weekend long and inviting them to add to it as well. And of course, it can be done any day! Every day bears its own gifts if we just open the package.

Today we focused mainly on what we are thankful for in our current lives (now), but we could also include wonderful memories (past) and gratitude for all the blessings on the way! (future)

Alternative for Couples: You can also do this as a Couple’s Gratitude Book or Journal, a beautiful way to show appreciation and deepen connection. So few marriages last or are happy, as we all know, and I am blessed to have a deliriously, deLIGHTfully ecstatic marriage, 12 years strong and better every day. One of the reasons is of course, the selection of the right mate; but in order to do so, we had to do the necessary self-healing and inner preparation to bring whole, healthy individuals to the relationship. Much of this work is presented in my book: The Radical Self-Love Workbook. But it is also essential to nurture even the best of relationships, and my husband and I do so daily in many creative ways such as this.

and at my love blog: loveandspiritblog.wordpress.com.

Whether you do the Gratitude Book as a homemade book like we did today, like a scrapbook or journal, and whether you do it as a family activity or a couple’s relationship-enhancer, it will help you see your life through the eyes of love and gratitude, and bring you even closer with those you love. Enjoy! And I welcome you to send me a comment or email to share your experience.

#5: Honor the 4 Directions and 4 Sacred Elements:

Earth, Air, Fire, Water

You do not have to be Native American to appreciate one of their traditions, which is to honor the Medicine Wheel, facing each of the four directions, thanking each one for their gifts. This is also a tradition in all indigenous cultures including pre-Christian Europe (a.k.a. Wicca, Druidry, paganism, et al.), Africa, Australia, Hawaii and South America.

In fact, if you scratch the surface beneath contemporary religions on any part of the Earth, you will find an ancient shamanic tradition that honors all the directions and all of nature as sacred.

All things follow this cycle of birth, growth, fruition and quietude, whether we are looking at seasons, a lifespan, a day, or a garden. The beauty of Medicine Wheel ceremony and the paradigm itself is that it can be applied to our lives in so many ways.

So how do you honor the directions and elements, to give thanks for what they give to us so generously? Here are a few ideas:

* Altar: Create an altar to each direction or a Medicine Wheel altar encompassing all the directions/elements. This can be in your home or outside. My husband specializes in creating Medicine Wheels as a sacred practice on the land, and has helped others to do this as well.

* Cherokee Dance of Life – You would need to learn this in person from someone who has learned it, oral tradition. This is an incredible moving meditation to all 4 directions, peoples, and elements which also honors Mother Earth and Father Sky, balances their energies as sacred partners in our hearts, and helps us give away the gifts of Spirit that are our special medicine to share with the world through our right work and service. Occasionally my husband and I share this Dance with our community. If you live near Sacramento, and would like to experience this dance, let us know so we can invite you. Or perhaps Spirit will guide you to another teacher of this beautiful tradition.

* Drum, chant, play flute to each direction

* Give offerings such as cornmeal, tobacco or sage smoke to each direction

* Speak aloud from your heart to each direction and give thanks

* Sweat lodge

* Vision quest

If you do either sweat lodge or vision quest, please do so with the guidance of a Native elder to be sure you do it properly and safely.

* Journal or journey (shamanic meditation) to discover what power animals comprise your personal Medicine Wheel of your own energy field. I love to lead these meditations when I am called to do so. Honoring your own inner Medicine Wheel supports a strong aura and keeps you connected to your spirit guides, if this resonates for you.

Associations with Each Direction

Depending on which culture or even which tribe you consult, there are somewhat different associations with the directions, colors, elements and meanings, the medicine or power that direction helps us receive and embody. The one I am most familiar with follows but this is not dogma, merely a summary of what I have found to be the more universal associations. Follow your own heart and work with any spiritual practice in the way that resonates for your own heart and inner truth.

While I have a small amount of native blood, I was adopted and was not raised in that tradition. I discovered shamanism after my initiation and spiritual awakening 15 years ago. I do not claim to be a tribal elder or teacher of any one tradition. I am an interfaith minister, meditation teacher, hypnotherapist, energy healer and intuitive life coach. I have been on the path of Spirit, studying, practicing and sharing healing and wisdom teachings from many cultures for several decades, so I offer here a simplified summary as a starting point for your discovery journey. You would do well to study more in depth with a local teacher steeped in the particular tradition that calls to your spirit, and of course feel free to research further on the Web, in books, classes, and listen to your own inner guidance. I always say the best way to pray, do ceremony or ritual is the way that feels best to you, with harm to none, of course. But we do need to honor the specific traditions so they are not all diluted through multiculturalism.

From the East we have the yellow people (Asia) and the gift of Air, Brother Wind, clarity of vision, inspiration, the new day, new beginnings, establishment of purpose and intention, and springtime.

From South, we receive the wisdom of the black people (Africa), Fire. The tools, strength, perseverance and energy to follow through and manifest, midday/ noon, summer, also humor and passion, innocence and trust.

The West gives us the culture of the Red people (such as Native Americans), the setting sun, Water, emotions, the fall season, self-evaluation toward completion, looks-within time, peace, rest and healing.

And the North represents the White (European) people and all their cultural gift. The sacred mountain, winter, midnight, time to slow down, go within and be still to receive guidance for what comes next. Completion, what you keep from the past cycle and all that you have accomplished and learned. It is also associated with the Spirit and wisdom.

Note: You can also honor the other 3 directions: Earth (below), Sky (above) and Center (within).

I hope you enjoyed these five creative ways to give thanks and I wish you abundant blessings on your journey!

Finally, in the spirit of Sufi mystic poet Rumi, I invite you to kiss the ground. Blow kisses to the sky. Bow to everything. Everything is sacred.

With Love,

Happy Thanksgiving!

“The eye, altering, alters all.” – William Blake

I recently saw the movie Up with my family and we were touched by the sweet message that it is the most simple moments that have the most meaning for us. I call those moments, like when Russell sits on the curb counting red and blue cars with his dad and then with his new (grand)father figure at the end of the movie, the “pearls on life’s necklace.” Individually, they are precious and delicate, yet strung one after another, they form a true treasure.

In an earlier post, I shared several reasons why it is so essential to enhance our gratitude attitude. So now, as promised, here are some fun, practical ideas for how to become even more grateful (great full), how to count more of those pearls and value them with your heart, while they are in your hands:

1. My Feet Touch the Earth.

A Native American custom is to give thanks to Mother Earth each morning upon rising, when your feet first touch the floor or ground. This helps us remember that the land we live upon is alive and sacred, worthy of our deepest respect and greatest appreciation. It also helps you receive her bounty, through food, health, abundance and every good thing you can touch or experience through your senses, and to feel more grounded and “in your body.” Another thing I love about this practice is it takes zero extra time; it’s just a shift in consciousness, and isn’t that what we are most striving for?

2. Write a (different kind of) Thank-You Letter.

Well, you already know about the traditional thank-you-for-the-gift kind of letter. I believe it’s on the Endangered Species List. (When’s the last time to sent or received one of those?) I highly recommend we resuscitate these as they bring and spread so much joy, especially the kind of letters, cards and notes you can actually…what’s that called?….Oh, yeah, TOUCH with your actual hands and reread over and over without having to go online. What a concept!

In addition to writing to give thanks for specific gifts or favors you have received, I propose you explore writing Thank-You Letters to:

* Your loved ones…just because

* Yourself

* God/The Universe

* Your Body

* Money

* Your Ancestors

* The Earth, Air, Fire, Water, Sun, Moon, Stars…

You see, the possibilities are as infinite as your abundantly grateful heart.

3. Take a Gratitude Walk.

Dedicate a walk to the awareness of thankfulness. This is a walking meditation and is best done in silence or punctuated only with your statements of appreciation or a simple mantra such as:

* Thank you, God, for all that is.

* Right here, right now, beauty all around me.

* I give thanks.

* I am thankful.

Your gratitude mantra can also just run in your mind without being spoken aloud. You can rhythmically coordinate the mantra to your steps, or not; follow your own guidance and what your body tells you to do.

Another option is to think or praise something with each step or everytime you notice something you are thankful for, such as: “Thank you for my feet that I may walk. Thank you for these trees I see…. Thank you for the air I breathe. Thank you for my children (husband, wife, etc..). Thank you for my home. Thank you for my dog. Thank you for my car. Thank you for my work. Thank you for music….”

While you are walking, you may give thanks for gifts from Spirit which you can see and hear and touch in the present moment, or other blessings in your life, counting your pearls, but the key is to keep every step, every breath, every moment focused on hearful, mindful appreciation.

This is an excellent exercise which combines nourishing your body through the movement itself with nourishing your mind, heart and soul by returning your awareness to what is precious and good, all around you and within you.

As a meditation teacher for the past 11 years, I have frequently met beginning students who lament, “I can’t meditate because I can’t sit still so long. My body hurts and gets fidgety.” Some meditation disciplines and teachers simply reply to this: “Just sit. Let the distraction of the mind chatter and body aches just fade away and just sit anyway. They are all illusions, and your mind will eventually clear as you ignore the ‘monkey mind.’”

This is true for some people, some of the time, as with so much wisdom. However, some people really do need to move more often. This can be due a medical condition, a tendency toward being highly kinesthetic, and/or a need to move energy and remember they have a body through touch and motion.

I am solidly in the latter category myself and find that I benefit optimally from a kaleidoscopic, multicultural meditation practice, drawn from Eastern and Western traditions – like the Meditation for Busy People course I designed for and taught at Kaiser Permanente. Sometimes still, some moving, sometimes silent, others with chanting or music or sacred sounds, sometimes focusing on the heart, third eye, or other chakra, other times aware of the whole body and energy field, sometimes open-eyed (gazing meditation is called “tratakam” in India), sometimes closed, focused on the inner space. Let me know if you would like to me to share more of my knowledge of meditation in this blog column. I teach many methods in my workshops, teleseminars and private practice and share them also on my meditation audios.

For whatever reason, if you do not enjoy an extended sitting meditation practice, you will likely give up on it, so I highly recommend exploring moving meditation such as Tai Chi, Chi Gun, Native American Dance of Life (Dance to the 4 Directions) and even some dynamic forms of yoga, or simply authentic body movement and dance as a meditation. Walking meditations like this gratitude walk is another wonderful way to integrate Body, Mind, Heart and Spirit, so give yourself permission to move while you meditate, and give yourself credit for “meditating” if you are moving consciously and feeling a physical, mental, emotional and spiritual benefit.

Anything you do that brings your awareness to the present moment, that cultivates mindfulness and what I call heartfulness, is a form of meditation, be it walking, stretching, drinking a cup of tea, even cooking or cleaning.

As Buddhist monk and teacher Thich Nat Hanh says, whatever you are doing, even if you are washing dishes, it is the most important thing in the world.And it can be done joyfully and gratefully. Absolutely anything and everything is a meditation when done with focus and appreciation. Right here. Right now. Love.

So I invite you to join me in striving to live Life as The Grand Meditation. The Prayer of Thankfulness that Never Ends. The moment of choice, the moment of change, the moment of power, healing and grace, is now.

∞

As for me, time to go practice gratitude with my family. Right here. Right now. We are about to create a Family Gratitude Book! I’ll let you know how it turns out, and I suspect that may become Gratitude Tip #4.

Hmm, it’s been over a year since I started this blog and it’s still alive and well. yay!

Just wanted to do a quick post on Thanksgiving. Looking back over the past year, God has been all too good!

David’s psalm (Psalm 103) clearly illustrates a clear and pure heart of thanks, gratitude, and praise to God that is laced with affection and love– all in response to our great God and Savior. He makes three analogies that reminds us of how wide and how deep is His love. As high as the heavens are over the earth! As far as the east is from the west! As a father has compassion on his children! Indeed, Bless the LORD, O my soul.

1Bless the LORD, O my soul,
And all that is within me, bless His holy name.
2Bless the LORD, O my soul,
And forget none of His benefits;
3Who pardons all your iniquities,
Who heals all your diseases;
4Who redeems your life from the pit,
Who crowns you with lovingkindness and compassion;
5Who satisfies your years with good things,
So that your youth is renewed like the eagle.
6The LORD performs righteous deeds
And judgments for all who are oppressed.
7He made known His ways to Moses,
His acts to the sons of Israel.
8The LORD is compassionate and gracious,
Slow to anger and abounding in lovingkindness.
9He will not always strive with us,
Nor will He keep His anger forever.
10He has not dealt with us according to our sins,
Nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.
11For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
So great is His lovingkindness toward those who fear Him.
12As far as the east is from the west,
So far has He removed our transgressions from us.
13Just as a father has compassion on his children,
So the LORD has compassion on those who fear Him.
<sup>14</sup>For He Himself knows our frame;
He is mindful that we are but dust.
<sup>15</sup>As for man, his days are like grass;
As a flower of the field, so he flourishes.
16When the wind has passed over it, it is no more,
And its place acknowledges it no longer.
17But the lovingkindness of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear Him,
And His righteousness to children’s children,
18To those who keep His covenant
And remember His precepts to do them.
19The LORD has established His throne in the heavens,
And His sovereignty rules over all.
20Bless the LORD, you His angels,
Mighty in strength, who perform His word,
Obeying the voice of His word!
21Bless the LORD, all you His hosts,
You who serve Him, doing His will.
22Bless the LORD, all you works of His,
In all places of His dominion;
Bless the LORD, O my soul!

Thank you, my God and Savior.

Tomorrow (or today if you’re reading this several time zone away) is Thanksgiving. Like Hallo

Tomorrow (or today if you’re reading this several time zone away) is Thanksgiving. Like Halloween beforehand and Christmas afterward, this holiday stirs up many rituals and memories. It’s a time to gather all the family members at the table and feast upon Mom’s great cooking prowess while pondering who gets to pull the wishbone. There will be numerous conversations going back and forth about the children, work, and maybe politics if someone is brave enough. It’s also a time to convene in front of the television to watch a parade of inflatable characters float down the avenue; later it switches to a rousing game of football as the viewers sleep off the rest of the turkey. Some may be watching a cartoon beagle cook up popcorn or trying to pull out the table tennis from the garage. Thanksgiving, like Halloween and Christmas, has its moments of familiar and unique experiences.

I have pondered about this holiday for the past few days. I recall my elementary school days, when it was told to us that Thanksgiving was rooted from Colonial Times; the Pilgrims, upon landing on the shores of North American, were met by a tribe of friendly Native American. To reciprocate the tribe’s generosity, the Pilgrims created a feast to celebrate their new-found home and friendship. They thanked God for their safe journey and the Native Americans for their hospitality.

History lesson aside, what I thought about was the meaning of Thanksgiving. The word itself should be obvious, but that’s where it ends. We are giving thanks, but to whom? How do we give thanks, and why are we doing it?

The Pilgrims went through a lot of trouble to seek a new place. They sailed countless miles of ocean, having only themselves to commune. They had to fend off weather, disease, and personal trauma. Their only motivation for this dangerous trip was their faith. Once they reached their destination, the Pilgrims had so much to be thankful.

Today, it seems we take things for granted. We wake up, get cleaned up and dressed, and then head for work. We sit at our cubicles, moving our fingers and staring at the screen in sync with the other workers. We get home from work, take in the day’s news, and then turn in for the night. It’s as if the day was just routine, despite a few bumps along the way (traffic, an upcoming deadline, a quick meeting with the supervisor, grocery shopping, paying the bills, etc.).

Perhaps this holiday would be a great time to reflect on your daily routine and see what makes your life special. It may be just being able to wake up so you can go to your work. It could be dropping the children off for school after they’ve said their good-byes and kissed your cheek. Maybe it’s having that lunch time with your best friend at work to discuss something not work-related. These and other moments are definitely things to consider being thankful.

For me, I’m thankful that I have a family, for the two children that affect my life in many ways, and for my wife who never fails to say how much she loves me. I’m thankful for the friends I have met online and in person and the conversations we have. Most of all, I’m thankful for having a life given to me by God…

Each and every Saturday of the year the volunteers with the Ministry of Hope at Cross and Crown Chur

Each and every Saturday of the year the volunteers with the Ministry of Hope at Cross and Crown Church in Arlington Heights, Illinois, serve a feast for the homeless and low-income of the area. Approximately 50 to 70 people enjoy the hot breakfast and lunch each week. Many partake in the opportunity to attend a worship service.

The volunteers and pastors of Cross and Crown are a gift from God to the homeless. They live from their hearts, offering smiles, joy, friendship, hope and support to all who need. They serve delicious meals, give clothing, bikes, and more. They give transportation to and from the church in a church member’s van. The Ministry of Hope is NOT even part of the church budget–all costs come out of their own pockets!

The Ministry of Hope volunteers are absolutely amazing! I honestly don’t know how such a small church can do so much for so many! Some may remember that it was this same church that was vandalized around Christmastime. There was an outpouring of support from communities all around, including an awesome new Christmas tree to replace the one that was damaged by the vandalism.

I felt glad that this church was able to celebrate Christmas and feel the warmth of the community help that we homeless feel when we go to the Ministry of Hope on Saturdays. I hope to return the love and kindness someday by finding a way to help them myself, perhaps by finding them a new or used van of their own to give us rides in to and from the church. It would even grant the church the ability to give us rides to the church on Sundays so that we may attend the regular worship service–something many of us wish to do but can’t get to the church on our own.
