Two junior Wheelchair Tennis South Africa (WTSA) players have been selected to participate in the Johan Cruyff Junior Development Camp in Belgium – a warm up to the prestigious Ath Open. Thato Tsomole who hails from the North West province will be accompanied by Thando Hlatswayo from Natal, to compete in the camp that is being held in August.

Only players born on or after 1 January 1993 are eligible to compete in ITF Wheelchair Tennis Junior Events in 2011. The 14 year old Tsomole, is currently ranked number 39 internationally – a really impressive feat for the up and coming star. Tsomole’s tennis colleague, Hlatswayo, also 14 years old, is noted as a strong contender in the sport. She is ranked No. 98 in the world on the senior women’s rankings, and No. 8 on the South African senior women’s singles ranking.

The physically challenged teenagers have risen above adversity and are excelling in the rapidly developing sport of wheelchair tennis, despite their circumstances and young age. “When I was told that I will be playing in the tournament I was speechless – one of my dreams has come true,” said Hlatswayo. Although working towards an international ranking, Hlatswayo still requires much development to clinch her goal: the coveted No. 1 position in South Africa. Her answer to this is simple: “Practice makes perfect!”

WTSAs director, Holger Losch said, “This will be an exciting time for our young stars; being exposed to the international coaching and players will go a long way towards the achievement of their goals. They have enough talent and determination to make us proud.”

As one of the fastest growing disabled sports around the globe, South Africa is proud to boast over 80 wheelchair tennis players who hold significant positions on the ITF world rankings; this is more than any other nation and a true accomplishment for any country with such a young team.

Wheelchair Tennis South Africa is proudly sponsored by Airports Company South Africa who is determined to see physically challenged individuals making sporting choices that support the pursuit of happiness and the realisation of a full and meaningful life.

Solomon Makgale, Group Manager Communications Airports Company South Africa concluded, “We are particularly proud of these teens, and know that with persistence and hard work they can do well – even at such a young age they are particularly dedicated to their sport. Airports Company South Africa wishes them well!”
