Thursday night saw the DLB hop across town to see Finnish goth ‘n’ roll band The 69 Eyes play The Opera House. Beforehand, though, we had the pleasure of interviewing Jyrki On the band’s tour bus. Thanks to Jyrki for the whiskey, and apologies for the quality of the video, especially in part one. The tourbus was “atmospherically” lit, shall we say — great for conversation, but bad for handheld video:

La primavera del 2000 trajo consigo el sencillo «Gothic Girl», que duró meses en las listas de éxitos de Finlandia, procurando a la banda su primer disco de oro. Después de grabar su disco Blessed Be, que permaneció durante un mes en las listas de los discos más vendidos de su país, la banda realizó una gira por Alemania que incluyo una presentación en el festival M’era Luna. La banda fue apoyada por la banda noruega Zeromancer.

En el 2002, la banda lanzó su disco más exitoso hasta el momento, Paris Kills.Este disco estuvo durante semanas en el número uno de los más vendidos en Finlandia y se convirtió en disco de oro en tan solo un mes.Después de una gran gira por toda Finlandia y parte de Europa, la banda lanzó su DVD, Helsinki Vampires, que contenía una actuación en vivo de la banda, grabada en el club Tavastia, en Helsinki, y varios videoclips.

A finales de 2003, The 69 Eyes firmaron un contrato con EMI Finlandia, con el que publicaron su siguiente álbum, Devils, en 2004. Llegó a disco de oro en Finlandia y les supuso una gira por el Reino Unido como teloneros de Wednesday 13. En el 2005 tocaron en casi cien conciertos en quince países diferentes, entre ellos el Live n’ Louder Festival en la Ciudad de México, junto a Nightwish, Therion y Rage y en 2006 realizaron la primera gira por los Estados Unidos.

En el 2007 la banda publicó su álbum Angels, realizando giras para promocionarlo, y a principios de 2008 lanzó su primer disco en directo, Hollywood Kills, grabado el 24 de marzo de 2006 en el pub californiano Whiskey A Go Go, de Sunset Boulevard en Hollywood.

En el 2009 lanzan su noveno álbum “Back In Blood” en el cual podemos apreciar su nuevo video clip del tema Dead Girls are Easy.

Comentario personal de la banda.

- Estós finlanses hoy en día son unos de los grandes exponentes del Gothic Rock/Metal, pero, antes de serlo tuvieron una serie de cambios en su género músical. Si uno se da el tiempo de escuchar los primeros álbums de la banda, se podra dar cuenta de unos cambios muy notorios en su música, antes de ser una banda bien consolidada en el mundo gótico y oscuro.

- Hoy en día The 69 eyes han sido uno de los referentes en cuanto a su música, ya que mantienen la escencia de la música un poco más de los 80’s,  atrayendo público incluso de la old school .

- Para el público oyente de música más oscura y gótica o más bien, de un rock/metal melodico, les recomiendo desde el álbum “Wasting the Dawn”  y los que vienen en adelante. Ahora quienes quieren escuchar el antes y el despúes de esta banda, tienen todo su material de estudio.

A full moon revealed a damp and misty night, as if the evening recognized the vampires waiting in its’ shadows. As a coven of Goths, cock rockers, metal heads, punks and alike gathered outside of the Sydney Forum, the scene was all a glitter with anticipation.

It was the first time The 69 Eyes ventured to our shores, following a huge online demand from loyal Oz fans. 

The Forum began to fill with an onslaught of glamour. Corsets, leather pants, ten- inch heels, sequins and red lipstick littered the venue; omitting nothing less than vampiric elegance.

Head Inc warmed the intimate stage with crisp and punchy rhythms mixed with powerfully jagged vocals.  While the band delivered a commanding set, the vocalist was far too animated, making the performance appear forced and less then organic.

Inked ambushed the stage with their gothic thrash lullaby’s, captivating the audience not with their music, but with their lead singer. The band members produced a seemingly mediocre performance, being at odds with their instruments which at times failed to co- operate.

Unlike   Head Inc, Inked found saving grace in their lead singer, who managed to draw attention away from the short comings of the band with his luminously eccentric performance.

It was a long wait. Inked was finishing up their set at the hour of 10pm. We were indeed ready to be bitten…

As the background music slowly melted away, the lights were dimmed and stage became nervous with anticipation.

Donning tight leather pants, no shirt and a pirate- esque bandanna, Jussi 69 [drummer] emerged to the soundtrack of the 1980’s classic vampire film ‘Lost Boys’, which floated through the crowd as Bazie [guitar], Timmo Timmo [lead guitar] and Archie [bass] joined Jussi on stage.

The intro to ‘framed in blood’ began as head vampire and lead singer Jyrki 69 exploded onto the stage, provoking a hysteric awe and admiration from the crowd.

It is typical of gothic shows to discourage any indications of enjoyment or pleasure, lest the mystique be lost. However the 69 Eyes broke through this un-written rule, making it almost impossible to stand still; inciting much screaming, fist shaking and devil horns action.

While covering all the bases of the 69 Eyes discography, from Angels (2007), Devils (2004), and Wasting the Dawn (1999), the set list focused mainly on the Framed in Blood album (2003), presumably to cater to the more die- hard followers whom regard the album as one of their front running releases.

Jyrki 69, a vampire with a fabulous Elvis/ Jim Morrison complex, serenaded his loyal fledglings with his smoldering presence and velvety vocals.

It was late in the set, and most of the songs on the wish lists of fans had been fulfilled. But one song did remain…. A song which everyone needed to hear…… not so much a song as an anthem which loyal followers were anxious to encounter.

Timmo Timmo began the riff to the anthem we had gathered to experience. The Crowd gasped to fill their lungs as a kind of prelude to screaming. ‘Lost Boys’ oozed from the stage and ignited a frenzy of incoherent cries of pleasure from the assembly.

It was over. The set had finished, and there was an almost post- sexual moment, after which you have a sudden urge for a cigarette.

The night swooned with vampiric glamour. It was pure sex, ‘blood’, & rock & roll.  The congregation was shimmering with sweat in the moonlight outside The Forum, recovering from the, excuse this hackneyed pun, draining experience.

The 69 Eyes will release their tenth album “Back In Blood” on August 28th in Europe and September 15th in USA, 2009. Australia may pre- order the album now, which unfortunately will not be released to our shores until late September. 

And so, until we are bitten again, the looming album will surely suffice.

The third 69 Eyes album I’ve heard very well may be my favorite! It’s not a concept album, but there is a loose theme of vampires throughout… Not surprising considering the bands refers to themselves as “Helsinki vampires”.

“Dead Girls Are Easy” was unleashed months ago online and it’s easily one of my favorite songs of the year, just so extremely catchy and rockin’. The lyrical content disturbed my woman, but it’s all in good fun to me! Nothing else comes close to matching the power of that song, but the rest of the album is still good.

The 69 Eyes’ self-proclaimed “goth ‘n’ roll” style of rock has a bit of a harder edge this time. Keyboards are mostly out and so is most of the poppy writing, now it’s just down to the guitars. All of this might have to do with Matt Hyde producing (he’s produced Slayer and Monster Magnet).

It’s a good direction for the band to get a bit heavier. I’m not sure how this will go over with longtime Eyes fans, but I’m enjoying it and this one of the top releases of 2009 for me.

Back In Blood (The End Records)

Just like Marie Osmond was a little bit country and Donnie was a little bit rock & roll, so Finland’s The 69 Eyes are a little bit goth and a little bit rock & roll. Actually, make that a lot rock & roll. Back In Blood, their tenth studio album, essentially channels late ‘80s Sunset Strip rock through the filter of the macabre. That means lots of references to death (‘Dead Girls Are Easy’, ‘The Good, The Bad & The Undead’) and horror movies (‘Lips of Blood’ is the title of a Jean Rollin vampire film, ‘Suspiria Snow White’ name-checks the Dario Argento classic, ‘Hunger’ was inspired by Tony Scott’s The Hunger), but Back In Blood inspires more head-banging and booty-shaking than Goth-approved jazz hands. The monochromatically-dressed masses will certainly abide the Sisters of Mercy-ish ‘Lips of Blood’, while rockers will hear the resurrection of Guns ‘N Roses on ‘Dead Girls Are Easy’, with singer Jyrki’s baritone croon alternately calling to mind Andrew Eldritch, Iggy Pop and Jim Morrison. Always passionate, always melodic, Back In Blood goes down smooth whether your poison is Jack ‘n Coke or absinthe straight-up.
