No, no es alemán. Ni siquiera holandés.

Es un término complejo que podría definirse así: “fin de semana que comienza con una frenética preparación de tuperwares con diversos contenidos para los más variopintos fines”.

Y es que cuando una es una amantísima madre de sus cobayitas, y se va de fin de semana a casa del supernovio (a la que no puede llevárselas), necesita dejarlo todo atado y bien atado. Lo que significa dejar los pertinentes tupperwares rebosantes de deliciosas verduritas cortadas, a punto para que el alma caritativa de turno (mi compañera de piso), se las de a las fieras corrupias a la hora de comer.

Y además, cuando una va a casa agena, por muy invitada que sea, necesita llevar algo que la haga quedar más como una reina agradecida, y menos como una liendre o garrapata. Lo que significa hacer también otro tupperware, este de galletas (las de la entrada anterior), para deleitar a la familia política, que a esos también se les gana por el estómago.

Sólo queda finiquitar la maleta (que podría considerarse incluso como otro tupperware… con cremallera), y estaré lista para huir rumbo noroeste. Ay, qué ganas…

Arctic Monkeys. Un fort accent british comme on les aime et des riffs à la guitare à tout défoncer, que demande le peuple?

Alex Turner s’énerve avec son micro, Matt Helders marque le coup en percussions et on se demande bien comment les cordes de guitare tiennent le choc.
Les titres transportent à l’arrière d’une rue sombre d’une quelconque métropole, s’attardent sur les silhouettes restées dans l’ombre et s’immiscent par la porte entrouverte d’un bar clandestin…

God, ce que ça fait du bien de voir d’aussi bons groupes dans les charts.

The Last Shadow Puppets. Et si on essayait de rester dans l’excellence en changeant un peu de registre?

Alex Turner et son pote Miles Kane des Rascals s’abritent dans une grange qui leur servira de studio et en ressortent avec dans leurs valises une grande claque pour le monde du rock contemporain et l’un des meilleurs albums de l’année 2008.

C’est beaucoup plus élégant et moins enragé que les morceaux des Arctic Monkeys. Un espèce de blues/rock lyrique et enflammé. Je n’aurai jamais cru dire ça un jour mais c’est peut être encore mieux que le Nutella : à avaler directement au pot sans craindre l’indigestion ou les kilos en trop.

“The Age Of The Understatement” – The Last Shadow Puppets

From the 2008 LP – The Age Of The Understatement

For this week, I wanted to feature more albums that were released last year that didn’t make peoples top ten. Artists like; Luomo, Mr. Scruff, Sebastien Tellier, Hue & Cry, Donovan Frankenreiter, Ayo, BRS, The Last Shadow Puppets, , The Killers  & Rachel Yamagata.

This is a side project of Alex Turner of The Arctic Monkeys, Miles Kane of The Rascals and James Ford of Simian Mobile Disco. The album is filled with big songs. Big in that they are full of the sound of an orchestra and with that it makes the album sound like a Bowie or a Scott Walker. It also reminds of a mix of The Faces, The Kinks &  Ocean Colour Scene.

Stuff We’re Loving: The Top 10 Best Albums of 2008

Ah, 2008, the year in which Obama was elected, the Giants won the Super Bowl against incredible odds, the Phillies won the world series (but no one cared), and when about 90% of us realized our majors aren’t going to make us any money in this economy and considered Pharmacy or Law school. But 2008 was also a vintage year in music, which is why I’ve compiled a list of the ten best songs and albums of the year. The list of songs is coming later, but for now, here are the Flashlight’s choices for the best albums of A.D. 2008. Feel free to agree or disagree, but, to paraphrase Mr. Adam Sandler in “The Wedding Singer”, I’ve got access to a blog and you don’t, so you will listen to everything I have to say. Enjoy:

10) Guns N’ Roses- Chinese Democracy

I know, its not as good as we’d hoped. But it’s gonna be on everybody else’s top ten list, so I might as well put it on mine. You know the economy is in bad shape when Axl Rose doesn’t want to sink anymore money into this $14 million ego-trip of an album. Sure, everybody is gonna whine about how Slash is gone and no one can play guitar like him, but if there’s anything that listening to a Velvet Revolver album teaches us, it’s that Slash may have been the talent in the band, but Axl was the visionary. Nonetheless, Slash could sure put together a guitar riff, and without him, Chinese Democracy makes Guns n’ Roses sound like an Avenged Sevenfold cover band. But it’s an Avenged Sevenfold cover band with two decades of hype behind it. What’s better then that?

9) The Teenagers- Reality Check

No, it’s not Serge Gainsbourg, but this band of Parisian misfits do share his one-track mind. The lead single “Homecoming” was nicknamed by DJ’s “the Clap Track”, as it was so sordid, it was believed to have sparked a rise in STD rates in London nightclubs. Most of the album is spoken word, and includes a stalker’s love note to Scarlett Johansson and a song called “F**k Nicole”. 39 minutes of dirty, sexy French goodness.

8 ) MGMT- Oracular Spectacular

Armed with keyboard riffs that are catchier than smallpox, MGMT have astounded pretty much every major festival attendee this summer. Thanks to events like Glastonbury and Coachella, the anthemic “Time To Pretend” and the gorgeous “Kids” were two of the years biggest indie songs, and the rest of their debut album is just as good. Best thing to come out of Brooklyn since the Warriors, Spike Lee and integrated major-league baseball.

7) Lupe Fiasco- The Cool

This one might have come out in 2007, but it was December, and I was to busy basking in the Dominican sun to pay attention to its release, but come January I was convinced that Lupe was the re-incarnation of Rakim (I know he’s not dead, but hey, it’s fun to start rumors). His debut Food and Liquor had some amazing singles, but ran a little on the long side and didn’t really have as much substance, but this follow-up, a concept album involving characters with names such as The Cool, The Game and The Streets, still astounds me with it’s storyline and the dexterity of Señor Fiasco’s rhymes, even a year later.

6) Coldplay- Viva La Vida of Death and All His Friends

I must admit, I was not a Coldplay fan until I heard a few key tracks from this album, then I heard Yellow then I heard the rest of Rush of Blood to the Head and Parachutes, so I must say, they are quite good. I still stand by my claims that X & Y was still a bunch of third-rate wannabe U2 crap, however.

5) T.I.- Paper Trail

Okay, he may not be bringing music back to the days of Ice Cube’s “Amerikkka’s Most Wanted” like I had claimed earlier, but T.I., armed with singles “Live Your Life” and “Whatever You Like”, both of which set records for the highest chart position jumps, has proved that it’s possible to produce a blockbuster hip-hop album that’s actually listenable in a year where Kanye West ran around masquerading as T-Pain and Lil’ Wayne disappointed the world with his mediocre “Tha Carter III”.

4) Late of the Pier- Fantasy Black Channel

This one is kinda obscure, but after putting out one of the weirdest and most amazing videos ever, and then releasing an album chock full of infectiously catchy and danceable tracks that sound like what the Super Mario Bros. 3 soundtrack would be if Gary Numan had composed it on mushrooms, these four English blokes from the same town as Iron Maiden created a record of trippy New-Rave music that doesn’t only sound amazing when you’re completely off your face on Ketamine. Pretty good for a band that says they don’t even care if they like their own music.

3) Various Artists- The Juno Soundtrack

Born out of a last-minute decision by Director Jason Reitman to portray the title character as a Moldy Peaches fan, runaway hit “Anyone Else but You” is just one of the many geeky-yet-cool-in-an-indie-sort-of-way tracks in this, the first #1 soundtrack since the High School Musical 2 Sountrack the previous September. Like a good mixtape made by your friend (or maybe the girl who is carrying your surrogate daughter), the Juno Soundtrack is an eclectic mix of Belle and Sebastian, The Kinks and (surprise!) The Moldy Peaches. It pretty much tells us everything we need to know about Juno MacGuff’s music taste and reveals as much about her character as the movie itself does. All-in-all, a perfect soundtrack to one of the year’s best movies.

2) Vampire Weekend- Vampire Weekend

As my suitemates last semester could tell you, I could not stop playing this album. From the moment I heard lead singer Ezra Koeneg singing about French architecture and the Falklands War in Mansard Roof I was hooked. This quartet of Columbia University alumni draw inspiration for their debut album from Paul Simon’s Graceland, which might sound lame, but actually works out as African-inspired rhythms are married with vague references to the Dalai Lama, reggaeton, and Manhattan’s Sloan-Kettering Cancer Research Center. It’s an album that never bores, and never fails to impress those who haven’t heard it yet.

1) The Last Shadow Puppets- The Age of the Understatement

It’s no secret that I’m probably the biggest Arctic Monkeys fan in the Western Hemisphere, and this Alex Turner side project could put out a recording of him picking out his belly button lint and I would still think it’s on par with Radiohead, but personal bias aside, what sounds like the soundtrack to a Sean Connery-era James Bond movie is without a doubt one of the most beautiful and ambitious albums of the decade. It may not have the lyrical prowess of his other band, but “The Age of the Understatement” will make anyone driving their sedan down any mundane highway feel as if they’re in hot pursuit of S.P.E.C.T.R.E. with Jane Seymour in the passenger seat. Best muthaf**kin’ album of they year. Period.

Bon un autre billet en si peu de temps (le dernier écart entre deux billets était de près de trois mois), wow. En fait, cette pratique me permet de faire asbstraction de mes présents travaux d’université… tout en conservant mon verbe à vif.

Depuis quelques mois, j’ai tenté à quelques reprises de jeter ici mes impressions sur The Age of the Understatement le premier album de The Last Shadow Puppets, projet parallèlle d’Alex Turner, des Arctic Monkeys, sorti en mai dernier. Malheureusement, toute tentative a été suivie d’une baisse d’inspiration rapide, ce malgré le fait que les dites chansons aient tourné régulièrement durant l’été 2008 sur mon iPod et à travers mon système de son Marantz.

Allié à Miles Kane de The Rascals, et anciennement de The Little Flames, Turner sort carrément du sentier tracé avec les Monkeys. Exit les petites guitares tranchantes et le petit indie-rock minimaliste. Les deux comparses partagent les guitares et les voix, qui se ressemblent à s’y méprendre en passant… J’ai oublié de dire qu’ils ont engagé un orchestre d’une vingtaine de musiciens pour l’occasion, sous la direction et les arrangements d’Owen Pallett, qui occupe la même fonction chez Arcade Fire, aussi connu pour son propre projet : Final Fantasy.

Réalisé par James Ford, le même qui avait produit Favourite Worst Nightmare, The Age of the Understatement est une très belle surprise en soi à mon avis. J’avais des doutes à l’abord lorsque j’ai entendu parler du projet la première fois. En effet, je suis toujours dubitatif lorsqu’un petit rocker affirme que son projet album sera enregistré avec un orchestre… j’ai sous-estimé Alex Turner. Bourré de talent, il se laisse aller avec Kane au jeu de la pop intelligente, à la sauce spectorienne si l’on veut. De plus, le son de guitare “mystérieux” qui avait été évoqué dans le dernier album des Monkeys est ici utilisé à très bon escient. Bref, du bonbon pour moi.

L’album démarre en vitesse avec le titre éponyme. Grandiose, on se laisse charmer rapidement… malgré le manque de présentations. On est convaincu dès lors du bienfait du projet. Puis, Standing next to you nous ramène directement dans la pop british des sixties, comme en fait foi son vidéoclip en fait. Sur Calm like you, les cuivres et l’orgue entrent en jeu, on varie. Avec Seperate but ever Deadly, on finit par se souvenir qu’un des camarades est un Monkeys, intéressante perspective.

Sur The Chamber, l’album prend une allure plus mystérieuse, plus douce. Mais on revient rapidement à quelque chose du plus tribal avec Only the Truth pour ensuite baisser la cadence sur My mistakes were made for you. Puis, Black Plant nous fait retomber dans une petite folie sixties, digne de la trame sonore d’un James Bond, version Sean Connery. Le mystérieux revient de l’avant avec I don’t like you anymore pour finalement se développer raidement avant la fin. La même ambiance continue avec un orgue, et plus de cordes, sur In my Room (sérieusement ce titre doit être revenu 50 fois dans l’histoire du pop-rock…).

Mais mon coup de coeur de l’album est sans contredit Meeting Place qui avant la fin de l’album nous présente un titre qui se développe en douceur et qui est bien poli par l’orchestre. Merveilleux, du bonbon. Puis la fin arrive avec The time has come again qui amène l’éternelle petite balade acoustique, Turner en solo. Bref, on est charmés et les attentes sont rencontrées. Que nous réserve Alex Turner en 2009 ? Sûrement un quatrième album en trois ans et demi, productif le gars… personnelement, je lui prédis un très bel avenir, sans équivoque.

“Doum doum doudoummmmmmmmmmm” (*) – (concert du 26 août 2008 à l’Olympia)

Je ne sais pas ce qu’Alex Turner (leader des Arctic Monkeys) et Miles Kane (leader des Rascals) comptent faire de ce « side-project » mais je dois dire que la performance livrée l’autre jour par ce duo nouvellement formé est très prometteuse. L’écoute de l’album laissait déjà entrevoir de belles choses mais le premier spectacle donné par ce groupe dans une salle parisienne ne m’a vraiment pas déçu. Dans un style différent des albums passés, on reconnaît bien là le timbre de voix marqué du leader Arctic Monkeys, une manière « efficace » de faire monter la mayonnaise avec un orchestre omniprésent…Un très beau spectacle.

Visuellement, c’était assez marrant car ça ressemblait fortement aux Beatles avec un « staging » « Kane-Turner » à la façon « Lennon–McCartney » (et je ne dis pas ça à cause de la « coupe au bol » d’Alex Turner ;)) avec l’orchestre (cuivres/cordes) en arrière plan…Une machine bien rodée bien que récemment créée….

Un petit mot sur Miles Kane, le leader des Rascals, nouveau groupe “Rock Indé à la sauce British”. Il s’est pas mal débrouillé, a dépensé beaucoup d’énergie (lorsqu’il en avait l’occasion, Alex Turner ayant le droit à la plupart des « répliques ») …

En résumé, un sentiment extrêmement positif sur ce groupe, qui même s’il n’est composé que le temps d’un album, a vraiment trouvé son style…

The Last Shadow Puppets – Standing Next to Me

Già che ci sono, dopo la collaborazione che ha dato vita ai Raconteurs, ne approfitto per spendere due parole su un’altra collaborazione recente: dietro al lungo e altisonante nome The Last Shadow Puppets si nascondono infatti Alex Turner, leader degli Arctic Monkeys, e Miles Kane dei Rascals.
Uno stuzzicante esperimento costituito da ritmi incalzanti e rollanti (lo stampo delle scimmie artiche è riconoscibilissimo, ma meno banale, più filtrato ed elaborato), melodie malinconiche e scanzonate, arrangiamenti orchestrali (opera del geniale violinista Owen Pallet, che ha esordito da solo col nome Final Fantasy in He poos clouds, un lavoro molto originale). Permane l’immediatezza del rock’n'roll indie molto in voga oggi, ma con un taglio decisamente più sperimentale… insomma si sarà capito che non adoro gli artisti coinvolti (Alex Turner su tutti – scandalo!), ma non posso negare che l’idea e la riuscita di questo album realizzano un pop di gran qualità, da non sottovalutare. Mi fanno venire in mente i Beatles più sperimentali dei Settanta (altro gruppo che non adoro – scandalo bis!). Gran merito va anche ad un produttore di tutto rispetto come James Ford, almeno per quanto riguarda la capacità di far approdare al grande pubblico realtà alternative come gli Arctic Monkeys stessi o i Klaxons.

I never bought into the hype surrounding The Arctic Monkeys when they hit a couple years ago. Something about them just really rubbed me the wrong way, and I could never put my finger on it. Until I realized that that was the problem precisely. The Monkeys sounded like they were putting ten totally disparate influences into a blender, and the sounds that they created from that just never seemed to jell properly or complement each other. Some Libertines here, some Specials there, a dash of Oasis, and a healthy sprinkling of Pulp, all filtered through an oddly dance-punk lens. In theory, I should love Arctic Monkeys. But it’s just a case of too many cooks in the kitchen.

But when I heard about Arctic Monkeys front man Alex Turner’s new project The Last Shadow Puppets, it sounded right up my alley. Grandiose chamber pop in the vein of Scott Walker’s first four solo joints? Sign me up!

By and large, the album doesn’t disappoint. There’s a clearly identifiable aesthetic tying the songs together, but they’re not what I’d call same-y. They’re hyper-melodic, and each songs features a propulsive, anecdotal narrative. I’m always impressed by songwriters that can pull off story-songs with aplomb, and Turner certainly does so here.

The Age of the Understatement’s ‘My Mistakes Were Made For You’ is easily my favorite track on the record. From the rich orchestration to the biting surf guitar leads, the suave delivery of the scrumptious minor-key melody…there’s nothing here not to love. And perhaps most impressive of all is the fact that the album as a whole is so good that it has me reconsidering my stance on the Arctic Monkeys. Not too shabby for a side-project.

Numa indústria cultural cada vez mais opressora, é raro ver bandas que consigam chegar no mainstream e continuar se desenvolvendo de forma natural e criativa, sem serem sufocadas por produtores e engolidas pelo mercado. Não me arrisco a dizer que o Arctic Monkeys tenha chegado a esse ponto. Mas se há uma formula ou não, até que ponto eles são um produto ou não, nada disso me importa. O ponto que quero atingir aqui é o feito recente do vocalista da banda, o “garoto” Alex Tuner. Após captar os sentimentos dos jovens urbanos contemporâneos e de forma totalmente despretensiosa transformá-los em músicas de sucesso global, ele apareceu mês passado com um novo projeto.

Sua nova banda (se é que posso chamá-la assim), chamada The Last Shadow Puppets chega na mídia com uma pretensão que ninguém esperava do menino que até pouco tempo ainda estava cheio de espinhas na cara. Não vou nem entrar nos méritos de dizer se achei bom ou ruim.O fato é que a seriedade das letras e a ousada mistura de guitarras e violões com violinos e instrumentos de orquestra, fazem de “The Age of The Understatement” um disco no mínimo instigante pelo contraste absurdo com a primeira banda dele.

Resumindo, vale a pena ver como uma mesma pessoa é capaz de fazer coisas tão diferentes e provar que não estamos submetidos aos rótulos limitadores impostos pela mídia e pela indústria cultural. Vejam os clipes e comprovem…

The Last Shadow Puppets – The Age of the Understatement

The Last Shadow Puppets es una banda formada por el vocalista principal de los Arctic Monkeys, Alex Turner junto con Mile Kane, el vocalista de la reciente banda The Rascals. Se les unieron a ellos James Ford en la Batería.

El inicio de las grabaciones tuvo lugar en Francia a finales de Agosto de 2007 y contó con nuevo material añadido entre Agosto y Diciembre. En Diciembre se unió el violinista Owen Pallett quien, junto a la London Metropolitan Orchestra, se encargaría de los arreglos de cuerdas.

Con un sonido muy diferente a lo que nos tiene acostumbrados Arctic Monkey, pues este trabajo es mucho más elegante por los arreglos de cuerdas y los sonidos de orquesta. En ocaciones ( por su acento puramente británico) nos recuerdan a Starsailor.
