Not only is this my favourite word, but it is also one of my favourite foods. So when I walked past the Vancouver Art Gallery and almost tripped over the Asian Dumpling Food Festival sign, I knew a higher power was watching over me and did this to me on purpose.  What was I to do, but have an early lunch.

ROUND 2: I came back for a mid afternoon snack. Still more to try! This time I warmed up with some Wonton Soup and Fish Siu Mai.

Now, to our regularly scheduled blog post, a continuation of my goal to find words of wisdom in movies that star certain people. To read the rules that I placed upon myself, you may want to skim through the last Movie Wisdom post. This one delves into the cinema classics of Don Knotts, one of my all time favorites. He is best known for The Andy Griffith Show and Three’s Company but starred in several movies as well. Without further delay, here is the wisdom within the works of Don Knotts.

Craft/Activity:

1- Visit a local apple orchard! Here is a link to Kent Harvest trails which has information about the orchards in the area.

2 -Paint with apple halves. This is super easy and all you need is 1/2 of an apple, paint and something to paint on. Here’s a fun variation, stamp an apple picking bag.

3- Another craft is to create a stained glass apple. Brush a lot of glue on waxed paper. Then cover the glue with red, yellow, or green tissue paper pieces and allow to dry overnight. Peel wax paper off and glue an apple outline over the tissue paper. Trim around the apple outline and hang the apples in a window.

Snack:

• So many apple treats! A few favorites are: carmel apples, (I made mini apples with a melon baller – then we could eat as much or as little as we wanted without waste)
• apple pie, apple crisp.
• Here’s a recipe for Blender Applesauce :  6 large apples 3/4 cup water sugar & cinnamon to taste. Peel, core, and cut apples into chunks. Put water & a few chunks of apples in blender. Blend mixture and add remaining apple pieces. Add sugar & cinnamon to taste.
• One last apple favorite is apple smiles. Give each child 2 apple wedges. Have them (or you) spread peanut butter on one side of both wedges. Next take mini- marshmallows(approx.4or5)and sandwich them between the 2 wedges, creating an apple smile. You can use slivered almonds.

Game:

• Hi Ho! Cheery-O (age 3-up)
• Apples to Apples Kids Edition (ages 7-up)
• Play Hot Apple- this is just like Hot Potato but with an apple!

Movie:

• Snow White. It’s got an evil witch who makes poison apples.
• The Apple Dumpling Gang (G)
• Green eggs and ham, Ten apples up on top!  and The tooth book [videorecording] produced by Green Light Media, Inc., and Random House Home Video. Apples, corn and pumpkin seeds (videorecording)  Galler West Productions and the Storycrafters.

No Time For Sergeants also stars a very young Murray Hamilton as Irving S. Blanchard. The young upstart who thinks he’s in charge, but don’t hold that against him, he’s had ROTC . You might remember him as the mayor in Jaws. Myron McCormick is perfect as Sergeant King, who is just wants to be left alone and not make waves.  Also look for Don Knotts (The Ghost and Mr. Chicken, The Apple Dumpling Gang), Raymond Baily (The Beverly Hillbillies) and Jamie Farr (MASH).

So, for my recommendation, for sure, see it. If the film kind of  reminds you of the TV series Gomer Pyle, this is the film that inspired that series. Kind of funny that the film inspired the series, yet was a spinoff from the  Andy Griffith Show. This is just all around good fun, worth seeing for sure!
