We all know Robert Downey Jr.’s past quite well, but his future looks bigger than ever. 4 years ago the guy was hardly on the public radar, 10 years ago he was in and out of jail and rehab. After “Iron Man” last year, and the supporting roles that led up to it, he’s now one of the biggest stars in hollywood. His  next films are all big blockbuster releases, and it looks like that’s all he’ll be doing for the time being. This May he has the much publicized “Iron Man 2″ coming out, which should be even bigger than its predecessor.

The next film from “Hangover” director Todd Phillips will co-star Zach Galifianakis and Downey Jr., “Due Date”. It releases on November 5th of next year, trying to be the big holiday comedy blockbuster. It may have a hard time since with Phillips’s record I’d have to assume an R rating is imminent. With Downey Jr. to help the film through holiday crowds it should still draw solid attendance.

He will team up with “Iron Man” director, Jon Favreau again for the movie “Cowboys and Aliens” which hopefully will not be a repeat of something like Will Smith’s “Wild, Wild West”. It could be a very fun movie, or a big disaster. Basically the movies about an Apache tribe uniting with local cowboys to fight off an invading Alien spaceship. It’s in pre-production now, but it should receive Summer 2011 release.

Next up is the much talked about Marvel production, “The Avengers” which will combine all the franchises they’ve recently started or will start like “Iron Man” and “The Incredible Hulk” and see the super-hero’s fighting together. Downey is the only major player that has been officially signed on for the film. Most of the Iron Man side characters have also been cast though, just no one from the other films. It’s scheduled to come out in summer of 2012.

He has a few more films in the pipeline, all also very high profile as well. A possible “Sherlock Holmes” sequel, “Iron Man 3″ which will almost certainly be greenlit for sure, and “Poe” which I would have to assume will be a bio-pic of Edgar Allen Poe starring Downey. This would not only be a great casting choice, but it would make an otherwise artsy bio-pic into a commercial success because of the big actors presence. The other day I read Jose’s review of New Avengers Annual #3 and thought I would put in my two cents about a quality Avengers Annual I had read a long, long time ago. It was Avengers Annual #10, published way back in 1981! I basically said it was the best thing since sliced bread and people that had not read it should go out and spend their time and money trying to get it. Well, much to my surprise, I received a message from Jose asking me to do a review of the book. Can Brian Bendis and Marvel learn a little something from this 28 year old Avengers book? I think the answer is a resounding “Yes!”.

Q: So why should we care about this old ass comic?
A: Well, because it was written by Claremont when he was on top of his game and the art by Michael Golden is excellent throughout. It also has the first appearance by Rogue, back when she was evil. Not to mention the X-Men, Spider-Woman, Ms. Marvel, The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants are all in this story as well as some kick-ass battles and surprisingly touching moments at the end with Carol Danvers.

Q: You’re just doing this review to bash Bendis and Marvel right?
A: Yes.

Q: Sigh! OK, what is the story about?
A: It starts with Spider-Woman saving a woman after she is thrown off the Golden Gate Bridge. Her investigation of the woman’s attempted murder leads her to contact the X-Men for help and eventually leads her to the Avengers. Meanwhile, a super villain named Rogue is kicking the shit out of Captain America, Thor and anyone else who gets in her way in a series of calculated attacks. Iron Man gets taken out of action in a sneak attack at his headquarters by Mystique even before he has a chance to help is fellow Avengers. In short order Rogue and Mystique have taken out the Avengers big three. Cap, Thor and Iron Man are out of action and the remaining Avengers are trying to figure out a motive for the attack. Spider-Woman shows up and the Avengers figure out what is about to go down. It a jailbreak baby! The rest of the Avengers (The Vision, Scarlet Witch, Beast, Hawkeye, Wonder Man, Jocasta) show up to rumble with the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. A very satisfying knock down, drag out fight ensues, and the Avengers manage to pull out a close victory. At the end of the book what should have been a happy reunion between Carol Danvers and the Avengers gets very bitter and intense as Carol lashes out at the Avengers for not seeing she needed help against her supposed lover Marcus. Marcus was the son (maybe) of Immortus (Kang the Conqueror). He used his father’s hi-tech devices to kidnap and rape (no reason to dance around it) Carol Danvers and impregnate her with another version of himself. Carol makes it back to Earth after Marcus dies of old age in his pocket dimension but makes it a point to have nothing to do with the Avengers, who she feels did nothing to help her against Marcus. Carol and the Avengers work things out to a certain point and the book ends on a somewhat happy note.

Q: That sounds pretty cool, but does it have strong female characters?
A: Very much so. The attack on the Avengers are planned and carried out by Rogue and Mystique, the two of them take out Captain America, Thor and Iron Man quickly in a way that doesn’t seem contrived at all. Spider-Woman takes center stage for much of the comic, investigating what happened to Carol Danvers and also kicking ass in the battle on Rykers Island, helping to free Iron Man and turning the tide of battle in favor for the Avengers. Scarlet Witch is also instrumental in the battle, attacking effectively against the Brotherhood while many of the her male counterparts are getting clobbered. Chris Claremont really seems to respect his female characters and allows them to shine in his book. Chris even gives Carol Danvers a scene at the end of the book detailing the events of her time with Marcus that could have easily turned out to be cheap and exploitive in the hands of lesser writer.

Many readers had felt Ms. Marvel had been treated in a very sexist and demeaning way by Marvel, that Carol Danvers has been the victim of sexual assault and Marvel had treated it as a romantic love story. Chris Claremont was one of those people upset by the treatment of Ms. Marvel and made sure people who read this Avengers annual knew that what had happened to Danvers was in fact rape and not a romance in any sense. There is a excellent article written by Carol A. Strickland that details the events between Ms. Marvel and Marcus and her feeling on everything that happened to Carol and the treatment of female superheroes in comics:

Q: OK, but do the characters act in an intelligent manner?
A: Rogue and Mystique have a problem. They want to get their fellow Brotherhood members being held in Rykers Island out, but they know the moment they show up there the Avengers will show up to stop them. The two of them work out a plan they think will allow them to conduct their jailbreak with minimum interference, and it almost works. Spider-Woman has a mystery to solve and you get to see her investigate it and act on the results of her investigation. The Avengers have a big problem, but you get to see them work that problem out and take a decisive course of action. The great thing about this comic is watching the chess game between the Brotherhood and the Avengers play itself out and you are not quite sure all the way up until the end who is going to come out on top.

Q: Fine, we get it, you love the story, but how was the second feature?
A: No second feature.

Q: Reprinted filler material?
A: None, nadda.

Q: Humkay…so what other books will I have to buy to understand what’s happening in this one?
A: None, the story is completely stands on its own. Even the Carol Danvers stuff at the end is explained with enough back story to understand what is happening without having to read back issues of the Avengers.

Q: Sure the book itself is cool, but it is not attached to any event. How can it matter when there is no event evolved?
A: That’s the thing. Back in the day annuals like this were the “events”. They were the comic equivalent of a summer blockbuster movie, a chance for guys like Chris Claremont and Michael Golden to cut loose and really try to wow your socks off.

Q: So you would pay $5.00 for this comic?
A: Well, no.. but I would pay $4.00 for it easily.

Q: Would you pay $5.00 for the comic so Brian Bendis would read it and perhaps learn a few things?
A: Yes, yes I would.

A recent comment by Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker) has set the comics internet ablaze with speculation as to whether Marvel mainstay character Clint Barton aka Hawkeye will appear in the upcoming slate of Marvel movies, particularly The Avengers.

For those that don’t know, Hawkeye is a Marvel comics superhero who made his first appearance as an antagonist fighting Iron Man back in the 1960’s. His started out life as an orphan who ran away from the orphanage to join the circus. There, he was taught archery and sharpshooting by the villains Swordsman and Trick Shot. He eventually left his new home when he came into conflict with his mentor’s criminal paths, leading to him taking the heroic identity of Hawkeye.

After a number of misadventures (including his bouts with Iron Man) where he was fist labeled a villain, Barton was recruited to the second incarnation of The Avengers, a team of the Marvel Universe’s mightiest heroes. Nowadays he is masquerading around as Ronin, since his Hawkeye identity has been stolen by the villain Bullseye as part of Norman Osborn’s Dark Avengers.

Since then, Barton has been one of the most enduring characters in the Marvel Univese. Despite lacking super powers of his own, Barton is able to match blows with supervillians through mastery of martial arts, gymnastics, and his signiture bow and arrows.

The character’s real appeal is the rogueish nature he’s held his entire career. This is the guy who would trash talk an enemy into submission, who had the gall to talk back to Captain America when he was training to be an Avenger, and who would one day be considered the best candidate to replace the Captain after he had fallen in battle.

I haven’t seen “The Hurt Locker,” but I’ve heard good things. What I hope the studios do, when casting the role, is choose someone  who is able to play both the bad boy and the nobel hero; fill in both roles that Hawkeye occupied in the comics. Aside from that, I can’t say who should play the role. Don’t think Alan Alda is cut out for it now though.

The cast continues to round out for the 2012 planned Avengers film. Empire Magazine reveals Hurt Locker breakout star Jeremy Renner could possibly be in the running to play the low-key hero Hawkeye, to which he answers while being asked the question about playing Captain America:

“I don’t know if I’d be right for Captain America,” said the 38 year old actor, who’d previously been linked with the role of Cap on that there internet. “I met with the Marvel guys, actually, but we didn’t talk about Captain America. But one of the writers, Zak Penn, we’ve become friends over time and he was thinking maybe Hawkeye could be interesting. He sounds like an interesting character.”

But Empire’s conversation with Renner took place after Iron Man 2 wrapped so, unless they go back and add him in reshoots, all sneaky like, it seems more likely that he’ll crop up in Thor or The First Avenger: Captain America. Does Renner have inside info? “If I was a betting man, I would bet that Hawkeye would probably show up in Thor, and then be in The Avengers,” he said. “But do I know for sure? I can’t say. But I’d love for that to happen. It’d be fun.”

Lets see here: Jackson, Downey Jr., Renner and Norton possibly? Damn!

Jeremy Renner, who was so great in The Hurt Locker and was batted around as a possibility to become the new Mad Max, is saying he may appear as the superhero archer Hawkeye in a couple of Marvel movies. How do you stock a couple of films with multiple minor superheroes and not have them all look silly? By casting people like Renner, who can do a lot with very little material.

The Playlist transcribed some quotes from the UK edition of Empire, in which Renner says he’s been having discussions with Marvel about playing Hawkeye in at least two upcoming Marvel films, then appearing in The Avengers in a full-blown role, rather than a cameo. If the deal did go through, sounds like he’d at least cameo in Thor before  The Avengers hits. At the end of Captain America, perhaps? Seems very late to be shoehorned into Iron Man 2, but anything is possible.

Renner says “Hawkeye could be interesting. They’re going to send me some stuff on it, see what it is. But I think they’re pretty awesome, trying to make superhero movies almost plausible and not just some fantasy thing”.

La primera aparición del personaje tendría lugar en Thor, en un estilo similar a la de Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Furia) en Iron Man y la propia Thor. Sería un breve cameo cuya meta es preparar el camino para Los Vengadores, amalgama en la que la gran mayoría de personajes de las franquicias Marvel tendrán su protagonismo. No one has even seen a trailer for Iron Man 2, yet rumors are swirling around of actor Faran Tahir (leader of the Ten Rings terrorist organization that held Tony Stark hostage in the first film) returning to play the villain in the third film; Mandarin. Tahir told Moviefone the following:

“At some point, they want to introduce Mandarin into the storyline and my character, like Mandarin, was the leader of the Ten Rings. We’re leaving it open because, partly, it makes good business sense for us to leave a little bit of uncertainty for people to speculate on.”

“He [Favreau] has known for a long time where he wants to take it and I don’t want to speak for him, but my feeling is that the second movie didn’t want to just follow a singular storyline. They wanted to expand the characters to show that it’s not a linear saga like Lord of the Rings. There’s a linkage somewhere in there, but the big idea is to do at least one more Iron Man movie and then go into The Avengers.”

This revelation is nothing major, not until we set our eyes on the I.M. 2!

En scen ur Inglourious Basterds.

Jag var rätt nyligen och såg Quentin Tarantinos nya film Inglourious Basterds (jo, titeln stavas faktiskt så) som handlar om en styrka amerikanska judar som får i uppdrag att sprida skräck i Tredje riket genom att brutalt mörda och skalpera nationalsocialister i naziockuperade Frankrike. Styrkan leds av löjtnant Aldo “The Apache” Raine, spelad av Brad Pitt, som kräver att var och en av de nio som ingår i gruppen skall avliva minst 100 tyskar och dessutom skalpera dem och överlämna skalperna till honom!

Under resans gång  knyts en tysk soldat som lustmördat 13 Gestapo-män till “The Basterds”, som gruppen kallas av tyskarna, och tar sig med nöje an sin nya uppgift. I Paris stiftar gruppen bekantskap med den unga judinnan Shoshanna Dreyfus, spelad av Melanie Laurent, som flytt från sitt hem på den franska landsbygden sedan hon så när blivit infångad av SS-officeren Hans Landa (Christoph Walz) som sänts ut av Hitler för att spåra upp alla judar i Frankrike; hela hennes familj mördas.  Shoshanna driver en biograf i Paris tillsammans med en färgad vän.

Det är när den tyske krigshjälten Frederick Zoller (Daniel Brühl), som blir förälskad i den tysk- och nazihatande Shoshanna, kommer in i handlingen som en utstuderad plan att spränga biografen innehållande hela nazitoppen tar form. Zoller lyckas nämligen övertala sin vän Joseph Goebbels, den tyske propagandaministern, att låta en nyinspelad film om honom själv och hans “hjältedåd” som prickskytt premiärvisas på Shoshannas biograf. Samtidigt jobbar Raine och hans mannar på att mörda nazitopparna på sitt eget kaotiska sätt.

Här skall inte filmens spektakulära slutfas avslöjas för den som tänkt se filmen medan den ännu finns på den svenska repertoaren, men nog blir det fyrverkerier i den högre skolan och en extra knorr på slutet. The Inglourious Basterds gör inte anspråk på att vara någon realistisk krigsfilm utan är en typiskt tarantinsk skröna, som för en gångs skull framställer judar under Andra världskriget som blodtörstiga slaktare och inte som viljelösa offer. Ombyte förnöjer som bekant, och nog är detta en mycket välgjord och en mycket underhållande film som jag gärna rekommenderar.

Det fanns emellertid litet varstans i verkligheten militanta judar som bekämpade tyska nazister under Andra världskriget. Jag har redan (7 oktober) på min blogg skrivit om upproret i Warszawaghettot 1943, där polska judar visade för världen att de var både villiga och kapabla att ta sig an Tredje riket. Warszawas kämpande ghettojudar hämtade inspiration från en judisk gerillarörelse i Litauen och Polen, som leddes av den legendariske kommendanten Abba Kovner. Om detta har Rich Cohen skrivit en fascinerande bok som heter The Avengers. A Jewish War Story (Vintage, London 2000).

The Avengers är historien om  tre judiska ungdomar- ingen av dem hade fyllt 20 år – som lämnar sina hem i västra Polen och omsider hamnar i det judiska ghettot i den litauiska huvudstaden Wilna (Vilnius). De tre är Abba Kovner, Vitka Kempner och Rozka Korczak. Kovner utvecklas till en ledargestalt i ghettot medan de båda unga kvinnorna Kempner och Korczak blir hans ställföreträdare. 1943 flyr de tre ghettot i Wilna och ställer sig i spetsen för ett band gerillakämpar som gömmer sig djupt i de polsk-litauiska skogarna och utför sabotageaktioner mot de tyska stridskrafterna. Här stannar de tre under resten av kriget för att därefter småningom ta sig till vad som snart blev Israel.

Efter krigsslutet började Abba Kovner, sedan han anlänt till Palestina, med sina vänner bland motståndskämparna planera för en spektakulär hämndaktion mot den tyska nationen. Genom förgiftade vattenreservoarer i tyska städer skulle miljoner tyskar mördas: öga för öga, tand för tand. Kovner och hans grupp lojala judiska motståndskämpar kallade sig “Hämnarna” (avengers, på hebreiska Dam Yehudi Nakam). “Vi kanske inte kan förhindra en ny förintelse”, resonerade man, “men vi kan se till att den inte blir ohämnad.”

Av olika skäl inställdes denna aktion (plan A) men i stället genomfördes en plan B, då ett krigsfångeläger för tyskar nära Nürnberg utsattes för en giftattack med arsenik vilket enligt uppgifter i amerikansk press ledde till att 2238 man förgiftades och måste vårdas på sjukhus.  Om några av dessa dog, och i så fall hur många, är oklart. Det kan nämnas att sionistledaren Chaim Weizmann, som skulle bli Israels förste president, enligt Cohens skildring godkände plan B under ett samtal med Kovner.

Det dröjde inte länge efter sin ankomst till Israel innan Abba Kovner på nytt blev inblandad i krigshandlingar, nu som kämpe i den israeliska armé som betvingade de fem arabiska nationer som angrep staten Israel efter dess utropande i maj 1948.  Senare blev Abba Kovner (1918-87) rikskänd som poet, filosof, visionär och även arkitekt (han har designat Diasporamuséet i Tel Aviv).

Abba Kovner gifte sig 1948 med sin livskramrat Vitka Kempner (Kovner), född 1920, som när detta skrivs uppges fortfarande vara i livet och ha två barn och fyra barnbarn. Rozka Korczak (1921-88) dog, liksom Abba Kovner, i cancer.

An engaging adventure taking place in two time zones, but with everyone nicely in character. (Well, certainly on the DW side, me being Avengers-ignorant).

By the time I was around 25, I realised my plans for World Domination weren’t going to come to fruition. So I turned my attention to finishing my already overdue studies of Architecture, and my ever-evolving activities concerning the elaboration of comics.

When I was 6 or 7, I saw at the newsagent’s near my house a copy of a Marvel comic called Secret Wars sitting on the shelf. It was an English version of the American original, where instead of a monthly issue the British editors in Bayswater had decided to cut up the monthly stories into chunks and publish them weekly along with other cannibalised fragments of comics such as Zoids and Machine Man. But I remember being transfixed by the action on the cover, and the colour and strangeness of it all. I was no stranger to superheroes, but I’d never owned an actual comic before, having only come into contact with the genre through Adam West’s Batman and Christopher Reeve’s Superman films. I asked my mother, who I was with, to buy it for me straight away, which, thankfully, she did.

And so I was introduced to a whole new plethora of superheroes, without a Superman or a Batman in sight (the distinction between the Marvel and DC universes weren’t obvious to me at time, as can be fathomed by my youth and no knowledge of comics, but it was confusing at first), but others with which I was engrossed straight away: Iron Man, Wolverine, Thor, Captain America (and the rest of the Avengers), the X-Men and most of all, Spiderman, who’d become my favourite.

But most importantly, it marked the first time I picked up a pencil and paper and started to copy Mike Zeck’s drawings, and began to learn about how to represent people more like they were than the matchstick-men kids usually scribble. That was the moment it all began, and I quickly decided I like this sort of thing. I liked it very much. I began to scrounge my father for his discarded sheets of A4 paper containing obsolete information concerning his business and began to draw on the blank backs of them. I learned how to draw muscles and faces, shadows and perspective, proportion and expression. In one fell swoop, Secret Wars won me over by reconciling brightly-clad bringers of justice and another of my fancies, science-fiction. In the 12-part mini-series, the cream of Earth’s superheroes and supervillains are kidnapped by an omnipotent entity and set against each other on a planet created specifically for the effect. For kicks, the entity, known as The Beyonder has advanced technology and ships on the planet, and buildings to be used as bases for each faction. And so I also learned how to draw spaceships and sci-fi environments, far before learning to do actual existing sorts of backdrops (to be fair, I only learned it while training to be an architect).

My new found knowledge quickly catapulted me to the top of my class in drawing, so much that while studying Greek Mythology in Mrs. Harris’ 1st year juniors class, my rendition of Medusa’s severed head done in chalk on card, complete with fangs, reptilian eyes and purple snake hair was used as a prop of the same Gorgon’s ghastly semblance for a dramatisation of Perseus’ epic tale.

It took me many years to grow out of superheroes, which eventually happened perhaps due to my growing preference for European work over the fast-food American style of comic, or perhaps due to the decreasing quality and ever more complex and numerous titles, characters, story-arcs, questionable aesthetics and apotheosis of pathetic artists in the Marvel Universe. I will, however, remain forever indebted to the entire silliness of costumed do-gooders, and in particular to that tale of lost superheroes flung across the universe, for my skills in doodling.

ไม่รู้จะเป็นข่าวใหญ่ หรือขาวเล็กๆ ดีนะครับ แต่ทางเว็บสุดยอดแห่งแหล่งข้อมูลภาพยนตร์ฮอลลีวู้ด IMDb ส่งข่าวมา จะยังไงก็ต้องรายงานครับ!! โดยข่าวคราวนี้ เกี่ยวกับพี่ยักษ์เขียว เสียงเบิ้ม Hulk ในหนังเรื่อง The Avengers รวมเหล่าซูเปอร์ฮีโร่ กู้โลก จะเป็นยังไงนั้น มาอ่านกันครับ 

ตามรายงานมานั้น ฮัล์ค จะอยู่ใน The Avengers แน่นอน แต่เรื่องตัวละครในตอนที่ยังเป็นคน หรือร่างมนุษย์นั้น พลิกเป็นอีกแบบหนึ่งเลยครับ ซึ่งฮัล์คเวอร์ชั่นปัจจุบัน ผู้รับบทเป็น บรูซ แบนเนอร์ (ร่างมนุษย์) ก็คือ เอ็ดเวิร์ด นอร์ตัน แต่อย่างที่บอกมาครับ มันพลิกมาเป็นอีกอย่างหนึ่ง โดยเนื้อหาเป็นอย่างนี้ครับ เอ็ดเวิร์ด นอร์ตัน จะไม่ปรากฏใน The Avengers แต่ลือๆ กันว่า โลว์ เฟอริกโน (ผู้พากย์เสียงให้ยักษ์เขียวทุกเวอร์ชั่น และผู้แสดงเป็นฮัล์คเอง ในเวอร์ชั่นเก่าสุดๆ ) จะมาพากย์เสียงให้ฮัล์คในหนังรวมซูเปอร์ฮีโร่นี้เช่นเคย

นั่นก็หมายถึงว่า ในหนังนั้น จะมีฮัล์คแค่ร่างเดียว ส่วนร่างมนุษย์ จะไม่โผล่ออกมาให้เห็น และนี่ ก็หมายความได้อีกว่า ตัวหนังจะไม่เน้นร่างมนุษย์อีกเลย อาจจะเน้นไปในด้านการปะทะกันมากกว่า และอีกในหนึ่ง Iron Man 2 ก็มีข่าวลือๆ ไว้ว่า จะมีฮัล์คในเรื่อง แต่เอ็ดเวิร์ดบอกว่า “ผมไม่ได้อยู่ในหนัง” ซึ่งก็คือ จะโผล่ออกมาแบบเป็นยักษ์เขียวโดยไร้ร่างมนุษย์ นั่นอาจบ่งบอกถึงความขี้เกียจของนักแสดง ที่เห็นว่าไม่จำเป็นต้องใช้คนแสดง ก็ดำเนินเรื่องได้ กรรม! ไม่ใช่ น่าจะอยู่ที่ความลงตัวของบท หรือประเด็นอื่นๆ นอกจากนั้นมากกว่า แต่ยังไง สมัยนี้ ความสำคัญของบท ก็เป็นหลักอยู่แล้ว เพราะอย่างนั้น รายละเอียดของเรื่องนี้จึงเยอะไปตามๆ กัน ถึงขึ้นว่า จอน เฟฟโัร ผู้กำกับ Iron Man ยังยอมถอย

”THE AVENGERS” UNA SERIE INGLESA QUE COSECHO EL EXITO MUNDIAL.

“The Avengers” (1961-69), fue una serie creada por Sidney Newman, el jefe del área dramática de la Associated British Corporation (ABC). Newman era un productor canadiense de cine y televisión, el cual por un tiempo había estado produciendo documentales junto con John Grierson en la National Film Board de Canadá, durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, antes de convertirse en el director de largometrajes y emisiones extranjeras de la Canadian Broadcasting Corporation en 1953. En el año 1958, Newman se mudó a Inglaterra para asumir el cargo de productor de la serie de la ABC, “Armchair Theatre” (1956-1974), la cual presentaba historias dramáticas enfocadas en personajes humildes con problemas sociales. “The Avengers”,Brian Clemens, lo único que hizo Newman fue inventar el nombre de la serie, y que tras mencionárselo le dijo, “es un buen título, así que ahora ve y haz algo con él”.

“The Avengers” sería lanzada como el sustituto de el drama criminal de la ABC, “Police Surgeon” (1960), la cual durante 13 episodios había fusionado los dos géneros más populares de la televisión; el drama médico y las historias policiales. El show estaba protagonizada por Ian Henry como el Dr. Geoffrey Brent, el cual era llamado a atender a las víctimas de diversos crimenes, encontrando por lo general pistas que la policía había pasado por alto. Aunque la serie no fue muy bien recibida, Hendry se volvería un actor muy popular entre la audiencia. Newman estaba decidido a explotar la figura de Hendry en una serie de una hora de duración, en la cual interpretaría a un personaje honorable con una gran destreza física. El productor también pensaba que era mejor abandonar el realismo presente en “Police Surgeon”, y utilizar el formato de un thriller de acción y aventuras. Si bien en un principio, “The Avengers” iba a ser la continuación directa de “Police Surgeon”, esto cambiaría al poco tiempo. El personaje de Hendry se llamaría David Keel, y sería un doctor que investigaría la muerte de su prometida, en compañia del agente secreto John Steed (Patrick Macnee). Una vez que la dupla encuentra a los responsables del asesinato, Keel se une a Steed en su lucha contra el crimen. estaba pensada para contrapesar el éxito de estos dramas realistas. De acuerdo con el guionista

En un principio, Keel era el protagonista de la serie y la consciencia de la dupla, mientras que Steed era un personaje más cínico y despiadado, un agente encubierto profesional, cuyos empleadores no serían revelados por el momento. La primera temporada de la serie, compuesta por 26 episodios no fueron bien recibidos por la crítica. Los productores, para dejar en claro que no se trataba de una serie de detectives, en algunos episodios incluyeron a un personaje llamado “One-Ten” (Douglas Muir), el cual se encargaba darle información y asignarle las misiones a Steed. Dicho recurso servía para legitimar el hecho de que “The Avengers” era una serie de agentes secretos profesionales. La dupla conformada por Keel y Steed solo duraría durante la primera temporada. Debido a una huelga de actores, las grabaciones de la segunda temporada tuvieron que ser suspendidas por un tiempo. Durante ese tiempo, Hendry abandonaría el show con el fin de perseguir su carrera como actor de cine (aunque volvería a interpretar a otro personaje en un episodio de “The New Avengers” en 1976). Para la segunda temporada, el personaje de Macnee sería promovido a estrella del show, realizando algunos cambios en su apariencia y personalidad.

Los cambios se enfocaron especialmente en el look del personaje (la idea de que Steed ocupara un paraguas fue inspirada en el protagonista de la cinta, “Q Planes”, de 1939). Steed se transformaría en una especie de dandy, aunque conservaría parte de su cinismo y su rudeza. Los cambios en el personaje de Macnee, ayudaron a separar a Steed del prototipo de los investigadores privados utilizado en norteamérica, para acercarse al refinado héroe tan típico del cine y la televisión inglesa. La nueva fórmula utilizada por “The Avengers”, le permitía a Steed contar con los servicios de una serie de compañeros. Los tres primeros episodios de la segunda temporada continuarían con el tema de un médico como compañero de Steed, con el personaje llamado Dr. Martin King (Jon Rollason), el cual fue incluído con el único propósito de utilizar algunos de los guiones que habían sido escritos pensando en la participación de Ian Hendry. Después de eso, Steed solo tendría ayudantes femeninas empezando con Venus Smith (Julie Stevens), una cantante de un nightclub que aparecería en seis episodios, para continuar con Catherine Gale (Honor Blackman), una sexy viuda con un doctorado en antropología y un cinturón negro en judo.

El personaje de Blackman sería el que mayor impacto causaría en la audiencia, razón por la cual ella seguiría interpretando a la compañera de Steed durante toda la tercera temporada. De hecho, fue con la llegada de Blackman, que la popularidad de la serie comenzó a crecer rápidamente. El vestuario utilizado por la actriz (generalmente utilizaba prendas de cuero) sería tan llamativo que comenzaría a influir en la moda inglesa de la época. Además, la introducción de una co-estrella femenina, cuyo papel tenía la misma importancia que la del protagonista masculino de la serie, transformó al show en uno de las primeros en incluír a un personaje femenino independiente. Catherine Gale no solo era un mujer inteligente con estudios universitarios, sino que también era sexy y una excelente luchadora. Aunque existía una evidente tensión sexual entre los protagonistas, los escritores nunca permitieron que su relación fuera más allá de las insinuaciones y el coqueteo constante. Durante el periodo Macnee/Blackman, la serie presentó una estética similar a la exhibida en el film noir norteamericano, a la vez que tomaba prestados algunos códigos visuales propios del expresionismo. Dicha combinación, era la mejor forma de representar el suspenso y la paranoia del mundo caótico en el cual se desarrollaban las historias.

En lo que respecta al contenido de la serie, “The Avengers” ya era reconocida como un thriller de espías propiamente tal. Las historias incluían el desenmascaramiento de un asesino a sueldo (“Mr Teddy Bear”), el robo de una fórmula secreta de combustible para cohetes (“Propellant 23”), o el asesinato de un diplomático (“Death Dispatch”). Algunos de los temas predominantes durante el periodo Macnee/BlackmanBrian Clements. Aunque la serie estaría ubicada entre las 20 series más exitosas de la televisión de la época, la crítica seguía atacando al show por presentar una versión light de la sociedad de la época. “The Avengers” estaría fuera del aire durante 18 meses entre marzo de 1964 y obtubre de 1965. Durante ese tiempo, se realizarían algunos cambios importantes en la estrategía de producción de la serie.

La serie comenzaría a ser filmada en celuloide debido a que los productores pensaban venderla a las cadenas de televisión norteamericanas. Albert Fennell asumió como productor ejecutivo de la serie, y el compositor Laurie Johnson, escribió la nueva canción principal de “The Avengers”.Roy Ward Baker, Don Chaffey, Charles Crichton, James Hill, Leslie Norman, y Don Sharp. Brian Clemens se transformó en productor asociado y editor de guiones. Todos estos cambios, ayudaron a transformar el estilo de la serie, la que comenzó a presentar set más elaborados, mejores escenas de acción y persecuciones. La cuarta temporada también presentaría a una nueva heroina. Con la partida de Honor Blackman, quien había abandonado la serie para interpretar a Pussy Galore en el film de James Bond, “Goldfinger” (1964), nació una muy publicitada búsqueda de la nueva actriz de la serie. Elizabeth Shepherd Además, se reclutó a una serie de experimentados directores de cine, entre los cuales se encontraban interpretaría a Emma Peel durante el primer episodio de la nueva temporada, pero sería rápidamente reemplazada por Diana Rigg.

Rigg, de 27 años en aquel entonces, interpretaría a un joven mujer cuyo esposo había desaparecido durante una expedición en Sudamérica, quien al igual que Catherine Gale, era sumamente inteligente y capaz de afrontar todo tipo de problemas por su cuenta. Aunque en un principio, Emma Peel utilizaría un vestuario similar al utilizado por Gale, más tarde sería reconocida por el uso de vestidos y coquetas minifaldas. La relación entre Steed y Peel es bastante más cercana a la que el protagonista tuvo con Gale, al mismo tiempo que las conversaciones entre Steed y Peel poseían un caracter cómico evidente, el cual se distancia del tono serio existente en el periodo Macnee/Blackman.

Esta época sería identificada como el periodo más clásico de la serie, periodo en el cual “The Avengers” pasó a ser una especie de parodia del clásico thriller que presenta las fuerzas del caos y la anarquía atentando contra una civilización indefensa. Además, muchos de los episodios de la quinta temporada presentarían elementos y personajes propios de la ciencia ficción, como malvados científicos locos, plantas carnívoras alienígenas (“The Man-Eater of Surrey Green”), o máquinas capaces de transferir los pensamientos (“Who´s Who???”).

El tema del hombre contra la máquina sería uno de los temas recurrentes de este periodo. Episodios como “The Cybernauts” (1965) y “The House That Jack Built” (1966), son buenos ejemplos de esto. También existirían ciertos guiños al cine de terror. En el episodio, “Return of the Cybernauts” (1967),Hammer, Peter Cushing. Su personaje era una variación del Dr. Frankenstein, el cual utilizaría un ejército de robots para asesinar a Steed y Emma, al igual que Frankenstein utilizó a su monstruo para asesinar a sus enemigos (hay que recordar que Cushing interpretó al Dr. Frankenstein en varias cintas de la Hammer). Uno de los episodios protagonizados por Rigg que alcanzaría mayor notoriedad sería, “A Touch of Brimstone” (1966).“A Touch of Brimstone” tuvo una serie de dificultades con las entidades de censura inglesas, mientras que en los Estados Unidos ni siquiera fue emitido.

Con la llegada del color en la quinta temporada, “The Avengers” comenzó a presentar un estilo bastante más cercano al Pop Art que al film noir. Las escenas de lucha eran mucho más estilizadas y las historias tendrían un tono más caricaturesco. Para la sexta y última temporada de la serie (1968-69), existirían algunos cambios en el elenco y en el personal de producción. Diana Rigg al igual que Honor Blackman, abandonaría la serie para participar en la cinta de James Bond, En dicho episodio, Emma aparece como la “Reina del pecado”, vestida con un traje de cuero, un collar con puntas y botas de tacón alto, aludiendo a la figura de la mujer dominatrix. Debido a las referencias a la pornografía sadomasoquista que aparecen en el capítulo, “On Her Majesty´s Secret Service” (1969), dando paso a la actriz canadiense, Linda Thorson, quien interpretaría a Tara King, una agente entrenada que se convertiría en la protegida de Steed. King era una heroína con una personalidad distinta a sus predecesoras; no se presentaba precisamente como una mujer confiada y capaz, sino más bien como una chica ingenua y entusiasta, que en algunas ocasiones pondría en riesgo sus misiones, aunque al final del día lograría su cometido. Además se incluyo otro personaje regular conocido como “Madre” (Patrick Newell), quien sería el jefe del servicio secreto. Por otro lado, Terry Nation, quien había estado a cargo de algunos de los guiones de la serie, “Dr Who” (1963-1989),el villano de turno sería interpretado por la estrella de la fue contratado como editor de guiones.

Algo que sucedería bastante seguido en la sexta temporada, sería que la reuniones entre Steed y “Madre” se realizarían en sitios muy poco convencionales, como por ejemplo dentro de una cripta, en un cuarto secreto escondido en una caseta telefónica, o en la parte de arriba de un bus de dos pisos. La particular “locura” exhibida por “The Avengers” se hace evidente en el episodio, “Look – (Stop Me If You’ve Heard This One) But There Were These Two Fellers…” (1968). La historia de dicho capitulo se centra en una pareja de payasos los cuales comienzan a asesinar a una serie de miembros de algunas importantes empresas. Los asesinatos son presentados como si se tratara de rutinas sacadas de un music hall, al mismo tiempo que los payasos escapan saludando a su “audiencia” luego de cada una de sus apariciones. Y es que las historias de “The Avengers” eran por lo bajo eclécticas, y constantemente estaban utilizando elementos de variados géneros tornando a la serie en algo único. Por ejemplo, en el episodio “Fog” (1969), retoman la mitología de Jack el Destripador, cuando Steed y King deben investigar las misteriosas muertes de un grupo de miembros del Comité de Desarme Mundial, los cuales se dice que han sido asesinados por una misteriosa figura vestida de negro.

La temporada protagonizada por la dupla Macnee/Thorson alcanzó algunos de los mayores niveles de audiencia obtenidos por la serie en la televisión británica. En los Estados Unidos, las temporadas que contaban con Diana Rigg como protagonista, tuvieron una muy buena recepción por parte del público y de la crítica. Los episodios protagonizados por Thorson en cambio, fueron menos éxitosos debido a que muchos opinaban que la relación entre Steed y Tara King no funcionaba tan bien como la relación entre Steed y Emma Peel. Debido a los malos resultados de esta última temporada, las cadenas de televisión norteamericanas optaron por no comprar más episodios. Sin el respaldo del financiamiento obtenido con la venta de la serie, la ABC no pudo permitirse el lujo de producir un show tan costoso como “The Avengers”, por lo que fue cancelado en febrero de 1969.

Sin embargo, la serie reviviría a mediados de los setenta como una producción franco-británica, impulsada por la aparición de Macnee y Thorson en un comercial de champaña realizado para la televisión francesa en 1975. “The New Avengers” (1976-77), estaría compuesta por 26 episodios producidos por Brian Clemens y Albert Fenell en compañia de la productora parisina, IDTV Productions. El producto fue actualizado, reflejando en gran medida la sociedad y la cultura propia de los setenta. Steed retornaría con dos nuevos compañeros: un tipo rudo llamado Mike Gambit (Gareth Hunt), y una ex bailarina llamada Purdey (Joanna Lumley). Steed ahora jugaría un rol de mentor, dejándole la acción a sus jóvenes compañeros.

“The New Avengers”, a diferencia de la serie original, presenta un estilo bastante más realista, dejando de lado la estética Pop Art, optando por colores más sobrios. De todas formas, el show presentaría algunos elementos de la serie original, quedando ubicada en una especie de limbo situado entre el thriller realista y la aventura fantástica.

Bowler hats, kinky boots, scheming scientists and preposterous plots are probably the first things that spring to mind when The Avengers is mentioned to anyone of a certain age.

Images of the dapper John Steed and the leather-clad Emma Peel driving around the English countryside thwarting bonkers baddies may be most familiar to audiences today, but rewind a few years to the series early days and you’ll find a much different series.

Designed as a new starring vehicle for actor Ian Hendry, familiar to British audiences as Doctor Brent in TV series Police Surgeon, The Avengers premiered in 1961 with a new theme tune and a new premise.

In the pilot episode, of which only the first 15 minutes still exist, Dr Keel’s (Ian Hendry) girlfriend is killed before he then comes into contact with the mysterious Steed (Patrick Macnee) who is investigating the crime.

Determined to “avenge” the murder, the pair would go on to solve various crimes and misdemeanours for another 23 episodes, before a strike cut the season short and the creators retooled it to promote Macnee to series lead.

The return of the show for a second season, complete with new co-star Cathy Gale (Honor Blackman), would see it become appointment television, if not for the strong scripts then certainly for its treatment of woman as equal – if not superior – to their male counterparts.

This newly minted set comprising the whole of season two and what remains of season one, has instantly become one of the must-have’s of the year.

While it’s true to say that early episodes are somewhat creaky and that there’s little of the pizazz associated with the show in its later incarnations, this is a chance to watch the evolution of an iconic series.

Patrick Macnee holds the viewer’s attention whenever he’s on screen, the programme becoming a mere procedural drama when he’s not around. The shadowy nature of Steed in this period will come as something of a shock to those more used to his clearly well-intentioned deeds of the Peel years and it’s often not clear who he’s working for or if his intentions are entirely honourable.

Though others help Steed in these Avengers, most notably Jon Rollason as Dr Martin King and Julie Stephens as nightclub singer Venus Williams, it’s Gale who would capture the viewers’ attention.

Of the 26 season two episodes, flashes of the series’ future penchant for turning the seemingly ordinary into something sinister do crop up, with deadly nuns (Dead on Course) and killer clowns (Conspiracy of Silence) part of the odd goings on.

Duller adventures do crop up, but it’s important to remember that the longer scenes and different pacing are reflective of TV production methods of the time.

Extras on the box set are too numerous to list, but include commentaries, episode introductions, surviving footage from Police Surgeon, DVD-Rom material and extensive photo galleries.

Working both as a rattling good adventure series and as a part of TV history, The Avengers should be on every TV fans Christmas wish list – roll on Season 3!
