I thought I’d start men’s fashion articles with the basics – the fundamentals of men’s fashion.

The art of finding a perfect dress shirt is a trait all men must master. I think you’re well aware of how important it is for you to pick the right shirt for you. You wear shirts on a regular basis – and the last thing you want is the bad fitting shirt. This article will give you the quick tips you need to master buying the perfect work shirt for yourself. You’d be just so surprised that several people ignore some of the minute details that make the biggest differences.

Before I continue, buying the perfect shirt doesn’t imply buying the most expensive one available. The perfect shirt is the one that fits YOU perfectly!

So when you go to buy your perfect shirt you have to first and foremost:

Pick the correct size – you do NOT measure your shirt by small, medium, large. Most men make this terrible mistake while purchasing shirts. It is essential that you first and foremost know your own collar size and buy your shirt according to this size. This is the FUNDAMENTAL principle in finding a perfect shirt.

Also, if your collar size is 16.2 – please round it up to 16.5. This means that you need to round up the size to the nearest half or whole size.

You should also know your chest size and your arms length! These are SO important in picking proper shirts.

Also, slim fit is the way to go – it makes all the difference.

This shirt should not be too tight or too loose from the collar. You should be able to have approximately half an inch space between your neck and collar (of course when completely buttoned). So if there is more – sorry but the shirt is loose for you!

Fight that shirt fat! For all those who think that they shouldn’t wear a fitted shirt because they are fat – If your shirt is loose for you when you tuck your shirt in, the shirt tends to bulge out more than you.

The shoulder seems should perfectly hug your shoulders.

When you unbutton your shirt, the cuffs should just pass your wrists. And when buttoned it should just pass your jacket sleeves by half an inch.

With time, the number and names of different collars are just getting increasingly confusing. In case of doubt your go to collar is the semi-spread collar!

Maintaining your shirt is essential – so for darker coloured shirts – if you see it loosing its colour, then its time that the shirt goes. Or if your collar starts to fade or turn yellow, its time to say goodbye!

Most shirts come with collar stays (if not you should probably invest in them.) They maintain the collar of your shirt and they are only supposed to come out every time the shirt goes for a wash.

Also, there is no reason not to iron your shirts.

I am all for white shirts – they look handsome, crisp and clean. But definitely spice up your closet with stripped and plaid shirts. Also, some colour is definitely going to do no harm. For the summer time, go with lighter shades, and during the winter darken your colour palette.

PS: Formal shirts are to be tucked in so save yourself and those around you by definitely AT ALL TIMES tucking it in. Now I hope finding the formal shirts just became easier.
