But wasn’t Let It Be The Beatles last album? Let It Be was released in 1970, after the band split up and was the final album released by the Fab Four. It was not, however, the final album recorded. Arguments over the album (originally titled Get Back) caused the project to be shelved for a time. In the meantime, The Beatles recorded Abbey Road and released it. Generally, Beatles fans consider Abbey Road the final album, and I am going to consider it as such as well.

This history of this album can take up a lot of space, so I will try to boil it down to a few paragraphs. After some of the disastrous white album sessions, the Beatles were on the verge of breaking up. McCartney wanted to keep them together and felt that if they could get back to the original style of them playing together as an ensemble, they might be able to work. For much of the previous albums, they had each recorded separately which was later mixed together. McCartney really wanted to tour, but the rest of the band did not. At least he hoped to record a live album, and the group went into rehearsals for such a performance.

These sessions were also filmed for a documentary to fulfill their three movie deal with United Artists (Yellow Submarine was not counted despite the Beatles hoping it would be). This movie was meant to show the band rehearsing for a live show, but really shows the slow breakup of the band. By the third day of the sessions they were already talking about breaking up and after 10 days, Harrison actually left.

A week later, Harrison agreed to come back as long as they could move back to the recording studio rather than the rehearsal space. They did and they began to record the Get Back album. They liked the idea of a live recording and it brought them to do the famous rooftop concert where they were recording on top of the Apple Studios building (which was shut down by the police due to the noise).

The first version of Get Back was intended for a July 1969 release, but it was nixed because they wanted the songs to match what would be in the Get Back movie. So the engineers remixed the album to be like the movie, but the Beatles rejected this as well. During this time, they recorded and released Abbey Road.

In March of 1970, the session tapes were given to Phil Spector who created the album which was called Let It Be. The album and film were released in May, 1970.

McCartney was not happy with the Phil Spector release, and so in 2003 he oversaw a remix of the album which removed all of the Phil Spector overdubs and changes. This album was called Let It Be… Naked. I had planned to do a comparison of these two, but I can just say that the Let It Be… Naked versions are all better than the original and leave it at that.

Here are both versions of The Long And Winding Road (from the 2009 re-master and from the Naked Remix). This is the best example of the difference between what the Beatles wanted and what Phil Spector created. You Choose!

Enjoy!

Children from the Beacon Primary School in Liverpool lent their support to the Mersey Sound Wave project when they recorded backing vocals to the official MSW song which Bill Hart has just recently finished recording.

The theme song encapsulates the spirit of the project which is rapidly gathering pace.

But it couldn’t have been done without the magnificent help of the children from Beacon Primary or The Beacles as they are now known after their famous appearance at the Cavern Club last month!

Listen to the theme song!

Stayed tuned to the website for more exciting developments coming very soon….

What is it about the historical strength of fashion that makes the novice mass murdering despot adh

What is it about the historical strength of fashion that makes the novice mass murdering despot adhere so completely to the historical wardrobe preferences of past aspirants to tyranny on the world stage? Forget about quitting smoking, losing weight, and eating healthy, this is the real thing. Green military fatigues and poorly made suits have given way to green military fatigues, poorly made suits and red sweat suits. Some attempts at individuality have been driven by the gray Primark jacket found in the bazaars of Istanbul, they remain isolated in their efforts.
Let’s begin with the poor relations over there across the Volga…old Yosif Vissarionovich Dzugashvili…or Joseph Stalin or Joe Steel to you…looking
good in this black and white version of his blood spatter resistant over shirt, old Joe established a style that would prove hard to resist for future despots with an eye for tradition.

The idea of culture was certainly not lost on the murdering chairman mao…he even incorporated it into his “revolution,” while continuing the tradition of Joe’s blood spatter resistant tunic….

Suddenly, there emerged a “rebel” on the political front….Sadly, his sense of rebellion was as dated as his choice of wardrobe…

Same old military-inspired styling…same old blood spatter resistant fabric…YET NO FASHION FORWARD THOUGHT……

Before we go on, let’s remember there was a time, prior to these three, when tyranny embraced fashion…..

Here we can see the source of their jealous deconstructions…the original mass murderer looks smart in his coat and tie, accessorized with a clever hat and important papers carried in the left hand…..a fashion statement not lost on forward thinking despots of the future….

Limits on time require we skip over some minor (less than 6 million) murdering despots at this point….

Fashion suddenly takes a turn with the arrival of the north korean “chairman of the hidden gulag,” ….in more ways than one…

Here we see the traditional blood spatter resistant fatigue fabric over-shirt boldly replaced by the blood spatter resistant gray jacket….a bold combination acknowledging both traditional and future concepts in despotic fashion…..a combination which will not be lost on the upcoming despot with an eye for style….

And here we have it….the evolution of despotic fashion culminates in an ensemble which suddenly places the contemporary classic open neck shirt underneath a bright new interpretation of the old green blood spatter resistant military-like over-shirt…the “gray jacket!”

We here at despotfashion.com realize that beyond the general UN rant, the occasion for more formal dress may arise. In such cases we could do worse than recommend the “old blue suit:”

or the oversized blue suit…..

or the classic “birthday suit…..”

We wanted to include running suits in this review but suffice to say, they’re red and habitually worn by despots…..

_On Thursday we will all be sitting around our dinner tables with our families, giving thanks to wha

_On Thursday we will all be sitting around our dinner tables with our families, giving thanks to what we have, ready to eat ourselves into food comas. But for now, it’s time that we reflect on all the things that we really aren’t thankful for, so that those things we think of on Thursday are that much more sincere.

_In light of that, we at The Scene have come up with a few bands that we really, honestly, truly are not thankful for.

_Music We Aren’t Thankful For, 2009:

_ _The Beatles: Now don’t get us wrong. We enjoy listening to The Fab Four as much as anyone else, and we are still adamant that “Ticket To Ride” is their best song. But, The Beatles have become so commoditized that they’re basically on the same level of music as Christmas carols. There are so many different anthologies, best-ofs, remastered, naked and cover versions of The Beatles’ catalog that it’s actually kinda hard to find their original albums anymore. We just want to enjoy The Beatles for what they did, not for what everyone has done to them since.

_ _Fall Out Boy: Everyone I know who listens to the same style of music as us tells us that we would love Fall Out Boy. And every time we hear them there’s about five to ten seconds where we think they might be right until the disappointment sinks in. Fall Out Boy has, to our knowledge, only written three good songs, one per each of their first three CDs: “Dead on Arrival”, “Sugar We’re Going Down” and “Hum Hallelujah”. Since then the only really interesting thing they’ve done is get pictures of bassist Pete Wentz’s package leaked onto the internet.

_ _Jay-Z: Jay-Z is known as many things. Among them, he is one of the most successful rappers of all time, Beyonce’s wife and the Brett Favre of the rap industry. The guy just won’t stop. Since his “retirement” he has collaborated with Linkin Park for a mashup CD, done backup work on numerous singles by other artists and released two full-length albums. It’s like him and Favre have a bet going to see who can accomplish more after they announce their retirement. And we like Jay-Z, we really do, but we wish the guy would make up his mind. Either keep producing great music as a full-time member of the music industry, or retire and spend your time with Beyonce. Whichever he picks we kinda wish we were in his shoes, but please pick one or the other and stick with.

_That’s it for Music We Aren’t Thankful For 2009. Coming soon as an update to this post, our good friend The New Glitterati’s pick for the music that she really, honestly, truly is not thankful for.

_Keep listening, and we’ll see you next week.

- Kid

Beatle George has an 8-year-old son. They were over for Monday Night Football tonight.

My son discovered with an outburst that the child has never seen Jaws.

How does this happen? I’ve insisted George bring the boy to me Wednesday so I can fix him.

To my mind, 4 is the right age for Jaws watchin’.

This decision came by happenstance. Uncle Jer and I were upstairs in the Boulder house, flipping through the channels on a Saturday afternoon, when we saw that the movie was about to start.

We looked at each other with excitement. “Pop some corn!”

Then my son wandered in.

Badda bing badda boom. Four was the right age.

We initiated him carefully. We told him what to expect. “Hear the music? That means you’ll see some red spots in the water. Here’s a scary part.”

Then I couldn’t wait for The Baby to turn 4. I stood by the set with the unpopped corn counting down the days from her third birthday.

We had left Uncle Jer behind in Colorado, but acquired the flick on VHS. My son and I popped corn and brought her into the club.

Now it’s Bennett’s turn.

My kids know the routine by now. We’ll pop the corn, give the warnings, and as one, we’ll shout, “You’re gonna need a bigger boat!”

I’m thinkin’ since the kid’s 8, we’ll have to watch it twice.

Director and writer Richard Curtis(“Notting Hill” and “Four Weddings and a Funeral

Director and writer Richard Curtis(“Notting Hill” and “Four Weddings and a Funeral”) brings to life the story of outlaw DJs who defied the British government for all that is worthy: drugs, sex and rock ‘n roll.

The government banished modern pop and rock ‘n roll from the mainland radio stations. Rock DJs took to the high seas to broadcast from ships docked in the North Sea. The film follows the fate of one pirate radio station called Radio Rock. They would play the most popular artists of the day: The Beatles, The Kinks, The Rolling Stones and The Yardbirds.

The story begins with Carl(Tom Sturridge) arriving on the Radio Rock ship because he had been expelled from his school for smoking cigarettes and marijuana. He claims his mother sent him there to try a different way of life with his Uncle Quentin(Bill Nighy). He meets a ragtag crew who DJs twenty-four hours a day from the ship, including the ship’s cook, Felicity(Katherine Parkinson), who plays a lesbian. Carl bunks with a man called Kevin, who is nicknamed Thick Kevin(Tom Brooke) because he doesn’t process information that quickly (Kevin wore an Easter bunny costume to Christmas dinner). This is a coming of age story for Carl who learns about rock ‘n roll and loses his virginity(while it was being broadcast live).

The station becomes threatened when the prudes at the BBC ban advertising on pirate radio stations become illegal. In response a legendary, sexy and feisty DJ named Gavin(Rhys Ifans) returns from the United States to draw in millions to listen to Radio Rock (It’s appropriate “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” by the Rolling Stones is used to introduce Gavin).

Eventually, the government deems it illegal for any ship to broadcast rock ‘n roll. Of course, Radio Rock defies the orders and continues to rock out. They try to make a getaway when the prime minister’s minion goes after them, but their engine blows up. The ship begins to sink into the North Sea.

The arrangement of cast members and intertwining of comedic episodes made this film very enduring. January Jones plays Elenore, a woman who pretends to love another DJ(Chris O’Dowd) so she can sleep with Gavin. And, another DJ named Midnight Mark claims his secret with the ladies is silence and one-liner “So, shall we get to it?”

The soundtrack which features major rock ‘n roll hits help the film’s appeal where it lacks fluidity.

I really enjoyed “Pirate Radio” and have seen it twice. Overall though, “Pirate Radio” has some truthful kernels about pirate radio off the coast of Great Britain, but in reality most of it is fictional.
