My wife and I have just returned from one of our favorite annual Christmas celebrations–listening to a performance of the full Handel’s Messiah. As you probably know it is an oratorio of which the text is taken completely from Scripture. Even though today it is seen as a Christmas event it really tells the Easter story and was originally performed at Easter. If you have attended a performance of this wonderful music you probably also know that during the Hallelujah chorus the audience stands–this happens because when the piece was performed for the first time in 1743, King George II was so overwhelmed that he stood (and so everybody else did to)–it has been tradition to this very day.

The most amazing story of “Messiah” is the composing itself–when you realize that this piece which, when performed in full, takes approximately 3 hours and yet Handel composed the oratorio in its entirety in 24 days. It was said to be an overwhelming spiritual experience on the part of the composer. Listen to how Patrick Cavanaugh describes it somewhat dramatically in Spiritual Lives of Great Composers:

In a small London house on Brook Street, a servant sighs with resignation as he arranges a tray full of food he assumes will not be eaten. For more than a week, he has faithfully continued to wait on his employer, an eccentric composer, who spends hour after hour isolated in his own room. Morning, noon, and evening the servant delivers appealing meals to the composer, and returns later to find the bowls and platters largely untouched.

Once again, he steels himself to go through the same routine, muttering under his breath about how oddly temperamental musicians can be. As he swings open the door to the composer’s room, the servant stops in his tracks.

The startled composer, tears streaming down his face, turns to his servant and cries out, “I did think I did see all heaven before me, and the great God Himself.” George Frederic Handel had just finished writing a movement which would take its place in history as the “Hallelujah Chorus.”

If you have not enjoyed this stirring peice of music in a while–I encourage to do so very soon.

If you have attended Church on a regular basis for a number of years, I can guess that you do not remember a great deal about all of the sermons you have heard. You certainly remember those that were especially helpful to you. Today, I am reminded of one of those sermons in my own life. My former Pastor was Bud Parrish. He is now the Director of Missions for the Robeson Baptist Association in NC. Bud shared a message in December of 2004 that radically grabbed my attention. The message was based on 1 verse . . . 1 Cor. 10:31. In a letter prior to Paul’s letter to the Corinthians, the Corinthians asked Paul about eating meat that had been sacrificed to other Gods. Paul gave them some general instructions which included times when it was ok, and times when it was not. Then, he shared this. “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” In this message, Bud asked a simple question. What does Jesus want for Christmas? The gift that Jesus would like from you and I is for us to live the life he died to save with the same obedience he used to save us. It is my prayer today that I will refocus on this singular goal. Whatever we do, let’s do it all for the glory of God.

What about you?

Today we woke. We spoke. We prayed.

Business, we mused, is not about sales and profits, its about life. Life, we mused, is not about winning, its about relationship.

We want to model life, a life that is selfless, honest, beautiful and creative. We believe that this is the way to live life, and we pray for these. A book called James in the second half of the bible, writes about prayer igniting the touch paper of hope. Today we woke, we spoke and we prayed.

I am certain you have heard the phrase “perception is reality.” As I continue to interch

I am certain you have heard the phrase “perception is reality.” As I continue to interchange with people who hold to a non-theist belief system I am finding a great divide in one specific area. If you talk to an atheist/agnostic about their problems with religion/Christianity it will, almost without exception, be described as an intellectual problem–atheism/agnosticism is rational and reasonable, while religious belief is irrational and accepting of what is not there. Faith will normally be described as some form of wishful thinking, fantasy, sci-fi, etc.

As Christians we do not see ourselves as having parked our brains at the door and we do not understand faith to be some form of blind leap in the dark. We see faith as very reasonable–no, the things we have faith in are not provable (nor is anything else–as in “there is no god”)–if they were void of any question, faith would not be necessary, but we see enough evidence of what we believe to make it reasonable. So from a non-religious perspective the choice seems to be either faith or reason while for the theist it is a combination of faith and reason.

I sense this picture is far too simplistic. Even though I love the field of apologetics I know that someone cannot be “argued” (or academically convinced) into being a Christian. If there are honest intellectual hurdles, they can be overcome–but as one preacher said, “whatever you can be talked into, you can be talked out of.” Secondly, and maybe more importantly, decisions are not made with the mind, they are made by the will. The question is phrased something like this–”If I could answer everyone of your objections in an intellectually satisfying way, would you become a Christian?” If the answer to that question is no, then it is not a question of the mind–it is a question of the will.

Into the Wild = Twice: I absolutely loved this story, although it was tragic and depressing. It’s the true story of Chris McCandless and his journey to find himself amongst the brutal Alaskan wilderness. He ultimately succumbs to starvation, but not before realizing that “Happiness is best when shared.” It is a statement that I now hold near to my heart. The book made me realize that it’s the people around you and love in your life that makes you truly happy. A life alone is simply a lonely life.

Three Weeks with My Brother: This book, from the writer of The Notebook, Nicholas Sparks, focuses on his journey through life and the eventual success that followed. The story mainly centers on a trip around the world he shares with his brother as they journey through memories of childhood and tragedies they have overcome. It proved to be the perfect read while sitting back and relaxing on a beach in Cancun. It was full of bittersweet moments that somehow molded themselves into hope for a brighter tomorrow. Overall, it was a surprisingly heartfelt story that ignited my eagerness to continue my newfound love of reading.

The Catcher in the Rye: The writing style was not only fun but intriguing. If you did not have the opportunity to read this in high school, I would highly recommend it. For me it lacked any pretention and flowed seamlessly. I caught myself often chuckling at simple passages. It was the perfect before bedtime read.

The Remains of the Day: A somewhat humbling look at life and the inhibiting nature of work. This book was actually recommended to me and was a true delight. It made me realize that I should never put too much of an emphasis in my life on work and consistently try my best to find the true “matters of importance.” This is a truly profound novel that is sure to strike a chord within you.

The Five People You Meet In Heaven: I was rather taken aback at how unbelievably unemotional the book was for me. Although interesting, it lacked the fluidity and intrigue I was expecting. I can’t say I hated the story, nor can I say it was badly written, but of all the books I read this year, it was one of my least favorites. I honestly felt that the main character’s story was a bit depressing and I never truly became engulfed by the book itself.

A Separate Peace: Not as exciting as I had hoped. In an effort to catch up on reading I never did in high school I was a bit disappointed with this one. I suppose I expected a bit too much, but nonetheless it was a well written novel. Whereas the books I read before were page turners, I found myself forcing to read this at times. However, I do believe I am better for reading it.

My Booky Wook: A tongue and cheek autobiographical look into the life of Russell Brand. Definitely an interesting read, but lacking descriptive substance towards the middle and end, it didn’t quite live up to the comedic nature of its beginning. However, with the laugh out loud moments it provided I would recommend it.

The Thirteenth Tale: This book is mesmerizing in its writing style and a definite page turner after about forty pages. I thoroughly enjoyed this book by Diane Setterfield and it is now one of my favorite of all time. The mystery that unfolds with each page is absolutely captivating and I honestly doubt anyone would have any problems with this story. Extremely well written and flowing with the utmost ease, I highly recommend this with four stars and a cherry on top.

The Shack: For any person of faith this book is a definite must read. It takes a tragic story and provides hope by introducing the importance of putting your faith and trust in God. It focuses on the struggles of one man to completely immerse himself in God after the death of his young daughter. It is a struggle that many people suffer with and the book provides a nice commentary on the subject. The book is an emotional journey, but is a journey I believe all Christians should take.

Ending Your Day Right (Daily Devotional by Joyce Meyer): Every night before going to bed I read this daily devotional. It is the perfect end to any day as it constantly fills me with hope and encouragement. If you are looking for a way to strengthen your faith in God and your outlook on life, this is a definite everyday read.

Bible (New Testament): I finished the New Testament once again, which always provide a sense of hope and new insight every time I read it. The Bible should always be read and I truly enjoyed the experience once again.

Love in the Time of Cholera: Currently reading this story, but it will likely be on next year’s reading review.

Hit the basement level. There can be no lower level on the lift. This is an all time low. Only from this point can rebuilding work truly take place. Anything else becomes a superficial clean. A surface wipe.

Everything needs to be taken down, raised to the floor. All this before it can soar again. Major repair work from the first floor upwards ceases to become major and merely become perpetual maintenance.

Say a loud no to anyone who stops you hitting the basement. Say a quiet yes when you are there.

Cry, cry many tears from the basement. Cry many tears from the place where there is nowhere left to fall. From this pure rubble will transpire pure hope.

“I have much people in this city.” Acts 18:10

This should be a great encouragement to try to do good, since God has among the vilest of the vile, the most reprobate, the most debauched and drunken, an elect people who must be saved. When you take the Word to them, you do so because God has ordained you to be the messenger of life to their souls, and they must receive it, for so the decree of predestination runs.

They are as much redeemed by blood as the saints before the eternal throne. They are Christ’s property, and yet perhaps they are lovers of the ale-house, and haters of holiness; but if Jesus Christ purchased them He will have them. God is not unfaithful to forget the price which His Son has paid. He will not suffer His substitution to be in any case an ineffectual, dead thing. Tens of thousands of redeemed ones are not regenerated yet, but regenerated they must be; and this is our comfort when we go forth to them with the quickening Word of God.

Nay, more, these ungodly ones are prayed for by Christ before the throne. “Neither pray I for these alone,” saith the great Intercessor, “but for them also which shall believe on Me through their word.” Poor, ignorant souls, they know nothing about prayer for themselves, but Jesus prays for them. Their names are on His breastplate, and ere long they must bow their stubborn knee, breathing the penitential sigh before the throne of grace. “The time of figs is not yet.” The predestinated moment has not struck; but, when it comes, they shall obey, for God will have His own; they must, for the Spirit is not to be withstood when He cometh forth with fulness of power–they must become the willing servants of the living God. “My people shall be willing in the day of my power.” “He shall justify many.” “He shall see of the travail of His soul.” “I will divide him a portion with the great, and He shall divide the spoil with the strong.”

“There is no spot in thee.” Song 4:7

Having pronounced His Church positively full of beauty, our Lord confirms His praise by a precious negative, “There is no spot in I thee.” As if the thought occurred to the Bridegroom that the carping world would insinuate that He had only mentioned her comely parts, and had purposely omitted those features which were deformed or defiled, He sums up all by declaring her universally and entirely fair, and utterly devoid of stain.

A spot may soon be removed, and is the very least thing that can disfigure beauty, but even from this little blemish the believer is delivered in his Lord’s sight. If He had said there is no hideous scar, no horrible deformity, no deadly ulcer, we might even then have marvelled; but when He testifies that she is free from the slightest spot, all these other forms of defilement are included, and the depth of wonder is increased. If He had but promised to remove all spots by-and-by, we should have had eternal reason for joy; but when He speaks of it as already done, who can restrain the most intense emotions of satisfaction and delight? O my soul, here is marrow and fatness for thee; eat thy full, and be satisfied with royal dainties.

Christ Jesus has no quarrel with His spouse. She often wanders from Him, and grieves His Holy Spirit, but He does not allow her faults to affect His love. He sometimes chides, but it is always in the tenderest manner, with the kindest intentions: it is “my love” even then. There is no remembrance of our follies, He does not cherish ill thoughts of us, but He pardons and loves as well after the offence as before it. It is well for us it is so, for if Jesus were as mindful of injuries as we are, how could He commune with us? Many a time a believer will put himself out of humour with the Lord for some slight turn in providence, but our precious Husband knows our silly hearts too well to take any offence at our ill manners.

2 Corinthians 12:9 (KJV) ~ My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakn

2 Corinthians 12:9 (KJV) ~ My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.

The Message translation of the Bible opens up this verse like this: “My grace is enough; it’s all you need. My strength comes into its own in your weakness. Once I heard that, I was glad to let it happen. I quit focusing on the handicap and began appreciating the gift. It was a case of Christ’s strength moving in on my weakness. Now I take limitations in stride, and with good cheer, these limitations that cut me down to size—abuse, accidents, opposition, bad breaks. I just let Christ take over! And so the weaker I get, the stronger I become.”

When I am weak, then I am strong,

Grace is my shield and Christ is my song.

Your emptiness is but the preparation for you being filled; your casting down is but the making ready for your lifting up. Your moments of extremities are God’s opportunities to show Himself strong on your behalf. Many a saint has trodden the path of hardship and suffering which comes in its various forms, and God turned their moments of weakness into great victories of faith, which enabled them to face anything this world could throw at them. As they fully trusted in the His faithfulness, they overcame by His Divine gift of grace. Here is their testimony from Hebrews 11:34 (NIV), “whose weakness was turned to strength.”

The Bible says 1 Corinthians 1:27 (NIV), “God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.” Therefore, when we feel weak and are at our lowest point, it is at this pivotal point where we feel the strongest, because His power is made perfect in our weakness; we are clothed in His strength. His strength enables us to face any foe, any hardship, any short coming, knowing that His grace is enough, His grace is all-sufficient for us, for our strength in made perfect in weakness. His grace hath led me safe thus far and grace will lead me home.

My friend, whatever you may face, may you face it with this confidence: His grace is sufficient of you, for His strength is made perfect in your weakness.

God bless you my friend, Matthew.

Exodus 15:2 (Amplified Bible) ~ The Lord is my Strength and my Song, and He has become my Salvation;

Exodus 15:2 (Amplified Bible) ~ The Lord is my Strength and my Song, and He has become my Salvation; this is my God.

Just the other day I met a young man while I was in a shopping queue. With sheer arrogance, he tried to jump the queue. I said to him in very polite manner, “Sir, there is an orderly queue. “ He looked at me with a frown on his face and barked at me, saying, “If you do not let me go in front of you, I will set the god of my juju ring on you!” At this, I looked at him and laughed, and then replied, “If your god can fit in the inside of such a tiny ring, I feel sorry for you. But as for my God, He made the whole universe, He is my all-powerful God! His power can never be contained in such a tiny ring like that, for He is an almighty, awesome God!” The look on his face was priceless. He was stunned into silence and walked away with his tail between his legs.

The Bible says in Acts 17:24 (NIV), “The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by hands.” He is omnipotent, omnipresent and omniscient. We cannot try to put God in a box with our limited, earthly thinking, for He is far bigger then we could ever think, or imagine. He is the Mighty God! Far beyond our reach! Unsurpassable in power and justice, this is my God.

My friend, God is a faithful God, who is bigger, stronger and more powerful than anything; this is my God! He is strong to deliver, mighty to save, powerful to heal and sovereign over all, this is my God! He is my strength, my song, my shield, my high tower, my refuge, he is my joy and my salvation, and this is my God! My heart leaps like a gazelle, like a calf released from the stall with joy, as I confess His name and declare in our text for today in Exodus 15:2 (Amplified Bible), “The Lord is my Strength and my Song, and He has become my Salvation; this is my God.”

God bless you my friend, Matthew.

Jeremiah 17:7-8 says: But blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him. He

Jeremiah 17:7-8 says:

But blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him. He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.

A tree’s confidence is its roots. A tree’s roots support it, nourish it, and provide for its sustenance.

We are to function in much the same way.

Our confidence comes from having our roots firmly grounded in the Lord.

Look what the verse says . . . The tree that has roots in the river does not fear the scorching heat of drought.

If our roots are sent out into the character of God, when the heat of trials come (and it will . . . it always does), we will be able to persevere. Heat is still hot. It’s still uncomfortable. But the leaves of the tree by the river stays green through the heat. If we are rooted in God, the leaves of our lives will remain even through the toughest trials.

Not only will we persevere, but we will come through the drought better off. Rooted in the Lord, we will never “fail to bear fruit.”

A lot of different folks stop by this blog, and I am thankful for each of you.

If you are a parent, what are you doing TODAY to help your child send down roots grounded in the Lord? How are you equipping them to weather lives dry periods?

If you are a youth worker, what example do you set for teenagers? How do you stay strong in the midst of life’s parched moments? What are you doing in your ministries to take your students deeper into a knowledge of God?

If you are a spouse, how are you helping turn your partner’s attention to the Lord? What are you doing to create a relationship, a home, where God is truly foundational?

May each of you find your roots solidly planted in God.

Have a great weekend.

Atheist philosopher, Thomas Nagel, is drawing rhetorical heat from his fellow atheists outraged over

Atheist philosopher, Thomas Nagel, is drawing rhetorical heat from his fellow atheists outraged over his naming of Stephen Meyer’s, Signature in the Cell (2009), as one of the year’s top books. University of Chicago biologist, Jerry Coyne, calls the book that Nagel reviewed favorably for the Times Literary Supplement a “creationist screed”, and Stephen Fletcher, a UK chemistry professor, is flabbergasted by Nagel:

The belief that we share this planet with supernatural beings is an old one. Students of magic and religion have identified innumerable varieties of them – gods, devils, pixies, fairies, you name it. A familiar motif is that they operate at the very fringes of perception. While the scullery maid sleeps, they are busy in the kitchen making the milk go sour. For a society with no concept of bacteria, this is, perhaps, a forgivable conceit. But for a modern university professor to take this idea seriously is, I think, mind-blowing.

Here’s what Nagel said about Meyer’s book that has set some New Atheists into a tizzy:

Stephen C. Meyer’s Signature in the Cell: DNA and the evidence for Intelligent Design (HarperCollins) is a detailed account of the problem of how life came into existence from lifeless matter – something that had to happen before the process of biological evolution could begin. The controversy over Intelligent Design has so far focused mainly on whether the evolution of life since its beginnings can be explained entirely by natural selection and other non-purposive causes. Meyer takes up the prior question of how the immensely complex and exquisitely functional chemical structure of DNA, which cannot be explained by natural selection because it makes natural selection possible, could have originated without an intentional cause. He examines the history and present state of research on non-purposive chemical explanations of the origin of life, and argues that the available evidence offers no prospect of a credible naturalistic alternative to the hypothesis of an intentional cause. Meyer is a Christian, but atheists, and theists who believe God never intervenes in the natural world, will be instructed by his careful presentation of this fiendishly difficult problem.

That’s all it took. A modest blurb and—boom!—Nagel’s reputation as a respected philosopher may be in the process of dismantling. And Australian philosopher Russell Blackford, in one of Coyne’s blog threads, joined the pile on:

Sad to see Thomas Nagel bringing himself and his academic discipline into disrepute. However, he’s long had an anti-naturalist streak.

Will Nagel fight back? So far just crickets.

Back when I worked at The Magic House, I worked alongside an older man we appropriately dubbed

Back when I worked at The Magic House, I worked alongside an older man we appropriately dubbed “Old Dave.” Old Dave was a part-time employee of the children’s museum. A sturdy man in his mid-seventies, Dave was in the Navy, but now a retired helper at the house. Like all bored elderly and mentally disabled people, he worked to pass the time.

Dave could often be found dozing off in various rotation spots throughout the museum. When he wasn’t sleeping, he was neglecting his job by talking to people and leaving his post completely for a variety of reasons. He regularly hassled people about their beliefs and would hand out Christian business card calendars with bible verses on them. Years later, he would be fired for sitting children in his lap and telling bible stories to them while he was supposed to be monitoring the three story slide.

Dave took very long breaks which meant 9 times out of 10 you would be stuck with him alone for some period of time. One time, I had the misfortune of having the same break period with him, in which he bluntly and relentlessly grilled me on my faith.

Old Dave: “Now Josh, what would you say to Gabriel at the gates of heaven?”

Me: (Stifled laughter) “Excuse me?”

Old Dave: “What would you say to archangel Gabriel at the gates of heaven, when you pass away?”

Me: “Well I suppose I would beg him to forgive me of my sins…”

Old Dave: “Wrong. Absolutely wrong.”

I thought I gave a reasonable answer, but he continued to quote bible verses of what I should have said for the duration of my break. This pissed me off. From that day forward I stole the piece of candy from Dave’s brown bag lunch every time our shifts overlapped. There was always one piece of candy, and I took it, and ate it, and he never even noticed, because his wife packed his lunch. He never said anything, and for all I know he went home and beat his wife for forgetting, but a good Christian man like Dave knows that is a terrible sin. Thank goodness my wavering faith allows me to steal candy as justification for an old man forcing his beliefs on me.

An entry thought on a personal level for a non-believer in the Bible or a marginal believer is: sin

An entry thought on a personal level for a non-believer in the Bible or a marginal believer is: sin MUST BE PUNISHED. That feeling is built into most people and laws … but by the standards that are foundational to our feelings and laws. But sin must also be punished by our Creator’s standards (which are much stricter and are spelled out in the Bible) BECAUSE He made this to be a perfect, loving place. That was His only intention. But fear not, because He knew that ALL people would sin. And because He loves us and wants us in the next perfect place (this one having been a failure in terms of perfection and love), He made a way for us to be there. And that way is: placing His representations on Earth (Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and the Bible) at the top of our priority list and ongoing focus. But, even if we do that, the Bible says that there will be rewards and losses in Heaven for EVERYTHING we’ve done on Earth.

Now the science of logic says that what I just said is either true or it isn’t. The proof that it is true can be found in my new book, THE PROOF that God exists and the Bible is true. You can see it and what’s in it at www.ConclusiveProofOfGod.com.

Proverbs 15:22 Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed. How many times have

Proverbs 15:22
Without counsel plans fail,
but with many advisers they succeed.

How many times have you kicked yourself because you failed to obtain information that was at your fingertips? Is it because we were afraid, ashamed or embarrassed to seek advice on crucial matters? Why re-invent the wheel? Why make unecessary mistakes? Often times the ego will not allow us to seek advice; but, to ask for assistance and help is a sign of prudence. However, to ask a counsel of fools will only hasten your demise.

It is important to seek advice from many different perspectives. Though stated differently, the true words should come to some type of harmony. False information that should be discarded will be easily detected in the presence of sage words. Failure to ask anyone will limit the chance for success due to the narrow scope of the lens.

Bottom Line: It is important to lend your ear to the counsel of the wise and turn a deaf ear to the lovingly foolish. You better ask somebody because you can not possibly know everything. Just ask the right somebod(ies).
