Alright, I know I’m not the first, and I won’t be the last, but I would like to extend a great big thank you to George W. Bush for thoroughly breaking the world. Under the reign of Bush the American people saw a steady decline in jobs, the sky-rocketing of fuel prices, an increase in worldwide discontent with America, the economy take a turn for the worse, an unnecessary war, and a plethora of other negative things happen to our great states. It’s no surprise that Bush was among the worst ranked presidents of all time.

What was the reason for all of these things happening? Some say it’s the war on terror, some blame the Japanese auto industry, and others blame other things. Personally, I think it’s because somebody picked on Bush’s daddy almost two decades ago, and the Bush family has been holding a grudge ever sense. Think about, what better way is there to get back at the terrorists than screwing up your own country? It saves them a lot of work and headache. With Bush in office, all it took was one terrorist attack on America for Bush to overreact and start a hunt for the every mysterious weapons of mass destruction in the middle east in hopes of righting all of the wrongs done to our country and preventing them from ever being done again.

As a result of my age, Bush is the first president that I’ve ever had the opportunity to follow. But that doesn’t change the fact that I’ve heard nothing but negative comments about him. Heck, from my experience Clinton, the worst thing he ever did was “not have sexual relations” with a member or members of his staff. At least he had the integrity to attempt to cover it up. Bush, on the other hand, seems to flaunt his mistakes every chance he gets. Did you see that giant grin on his face at the inauguration of Obama? That grin had a life of its own and seemed to say, “Ha! I got you good, America! I got away with it and there’s nothing you can do about it!”

Well, Bush, there is something you can do. If you ask me, you can wipe that grin off your face, learn how to pronounce “nuclear” and muster up the audacity to apologize to America for breaking the world. Whether he means it or not, an apology would probably do his future life a lot of good. At least he’d get some respect back.

As a result of Bush’s term in office, we need to look no further than just down the road to Detroit to see some of the long term effects of his presidency. The Big Three — the companies that have quite literally driven so many people’s lifestyle — are on the verge of crashing. Thousands of people are out of work, losing their homes and being forced to relocate or make do by flipping burgers, that is, if an illegal hasn’t already stolen that job away from its rightful owner; that owner, is America.

Go ahead Bush, retire to your ranch and live a happy, carefree life among your steer and horses. The rest of us, America, that is, will be working extra hard to get by while you hold your head high, while you should be holding it in shame. It’s hard to believe that it took over 200 years to build one of the superpowers of the world, and only a touch shy of a decade to destroy it. That takes guts, Bush. But you did it. So in that right, I must applaud you for going out on a limb and trying something new. You sought vindication for your father, and you got it. How long is it until one of your daughters does the same for you?

Ok, follow my twisted logic here. When you buy insurance you are actually selling your freedom for security. Ok, now that half of my readers have gone on to something more sane like Glenn Beck or Oprah we can talk. Lets talk about the tired old comparison of auto insurance to health care. You have auto insurance, right? When you have a catastrophic event it takes care of it, right? If you drive through the garage they fix it, right? When you spill brake fluid on the fender and it takes the paint off they repaint it, right? When your brakes wear out they replace them, right? When you need an oil change they cover that, right? When you are low on gas they fill it up, right?

If you answered no to any of the questions above why do you think health care insurance should pay for doctor visits and liposuction? Think for a minute about how much auto insurance would cost if they did cover all of those things then reflect on the bargain you are getting with health care. If auto insurance covered all those things do you think they might want to have a say in how you maintain your vehicle, or the places you drive to or the way you drive? You’re darn right they would. And health care is no different.

I smoke, when I can afford it. Don’t you think the health care insurance companies would like to make me stop. I bet they would like to take that greasy pork chop away from you as well. Obamacare will make this all possible. If you’ll refer back to my post of May 20,2009, The Big Three, corrupt politicians, insurance companies and the judicial system, you’ll realize that I’m not defending the insurance companies, I’m just trying to point out where Obamacare will take you.

Freedom is not free, will you sell your freedom for security.

by Gabe Downey

I am GLAD Billy Mays died.

There, I said it. Now, let me defend it:

First off I want to say, I am not glad Billy Mays as a person died. In-fact, based on accounts from the people who knew him he seemed like a genuinely nice guy. However, Billy’s death helps disprove one of my all-time pet peeves. This stupid notion that everyone has that Celebrities always die in threes is complete lunacy and I for one, will no longer stand by while people make this stupid fucking argument over and over again.

In the case of the last couple of weeks, we’ve had Michael Jackson, Farrah Fawcett, Billys Mays, Ed McMahon, and David Carradine all die. Is that three? Fuck no! That’s five. We had Farrah, Billy, Ed and Michael all within a few days of each other. So, what does that do to your logic you smiling, self serving piles of shit?

It’s a complete lie that celebrities die in threes. It’s a completely false assumtion an here are some reasons why:

1. People only point out this fact when it happens to “work”.

Celebrities die all the fucking time. People die, it’s part of life. But, when three celebrities happen to die in the vicinity of each other, suddenly everyone and their stupid brother comes out of the woodwork to claim to everyone that “OOOOOoooOOOOOh celebrities die in threes.” No. Wrong. Nothing is worse than only pointing to the evidence WHEN it fits your claim. There are tons of times one or two celebrities will die and no one will say a word because they’re too busy watching E! and dicking their own dog.

2. There is no timetable!

Once again, this entire viewpoint is stupid because no one ever gives a timetable. If three celebrities happen to die within the same year, everyone goes ape shit and freaks out because CELEBRITIES ALWAYS DIE IN THREES. No, you cock-loving moron, thousands of people die every year. You have to have a time table. If you were to say that celebrities die in threes, in the midst of two days and it happened constantly, I might be persuaded, but that certainly isn’t and never will be the case.

3. What do you consider a celebrity anyway?

Is Billy Mays a celebrity? Not really. Did he do anything that had a heavy impact on our society besides scream at us about puddy and cleaning supplies? No. Does he count towards the whole myth of three in the eyes of the moronic public? Probably, because people will pull at any strings to prove their point. Still, once again that puts us at five, not three.

The worst part of this whole thing is not just how people assume that celebrities die in threes, but how they treat the memory of the deceased. When it comes down to it the death of anyone is a rather sad affair. However, their death does not change who they were when they were here. Death does not suddenly absorb you of all of your wrong doings. Did anyone give a shit about Billy Mays two days ago? No! In truth, I’m willing to bet people thought just like I do, that he was annoying and a nuisance who needed to take a fucking chill pill and stop screaming at me about a garden tool that apparently cured cancer. Is this speaking ill of the dead? NO! It’s being honest about who they were when they were living. I’m sick and tired of seeing people update their facebook status’, twitter accounts, etc with memorial messages for someone they didn’t give two shits about before they died. It’s annoying, half hearted and worst of all it’s disrespectful to the people who do actually care and who are in pain, suffering from the loss.

Our society has the terrible trait of turning our dead into saints. Death does not absolve, it puts a final stamp on who you really were and how you will be remembered. Death shouldn’t bring people to apologize and change the way they feel. We should augment who we are while we are here and treat those around us with respect, rather than wait until the end to apologize. If we can learn anything from all the tragedy this week/month/or whatever you want your timetable to be, let it be this: People are people. Good people don’t die more often or more famous. Good people don’t need to live this life with questionable motives, situations and experiences. Be a good person, be humble and listen and when the end does come you will have no mess to clean up, no ill will to fix and more importantly, nothing to apologize for.

So go on, children. Live your life the best way possible. And don’t do it to get into some mystic afterlife lie about a land in the clouds full of everyone you’ve ever known. Do it because it’s the right thing to do.

Oh, and go buy the new Wilco album, out today.

The Big Three

My dad called. We began to talk (like we always do). At some point he said something about the “Big 3.” That struck me immediately. I said, “Dad, there is no big three.”

In fact, the more I thought about it…the more I thought, “How many are there?” The big one?”

What would the big three look like now?

Walmart

Google

Microsoft

The myth of the Big Three in Detroit is gone. It faded in the 1970s and 1980s. In the 1990s, the SUVs kept the myth afloat. The reality of the 2007-2008 financial crisis took away the final curtain.

While there is so much talk of shutting down dealerships for GM, we were on vacation and saw a brand new Toyota dealership being decked out. Yes, they’re ready.

Now we are faced with a real new world order, and we better focus on goals for our country, goals for industry and goals for innovation or the myth of America could fade and disappear. And that would be a shame.

Things are likely more serious in your life now than they have ever been. We all have to buckle up and do our best.

I never figured Chrysler had a chance, to be honest. And I know I’m not the only one. I’

I never figured Chrysler had a chance, to be honest. And I know I’m not the only one. I’m pretty sure I’m not far off the mark when I say that those of us in Detroit who have been watching the Saga of the Incredible Shrinking Big Three have long speculated that the likelihood of all three automakers making it out of this economy alive was a longshot at absolute best. Hell, it wasn’t that long ago when we were bracing ourselves for the disappearance of Ford, so if Ford was looking shaky then what were Chrysler’s chances?

But then Ford pulled a rabbit out of the hat – a big, fat, sassy rabbit at that – and wound up finding the strength to give the bailout funds the finger. Well, actually it wasn’t so much the funds they were telling to fuck off as it was the strings that came attached to those funds. Ford essentially said that if they had to dance with the ugliest duckling on the dance floor then they damned sure were gonna reserve the right to call the tune.

GM would have loved to flip its own middle finger as well, but that’s kinda hard to do when you look down and realize someone has already cut it off. So instead they had to employ their few remaining fingers by sticking them in other rather uncomfortable locations while cheesing like Louis Armstrong as if it was the best feeling in the world.

Please sir? May I have another?

But back to Chrysler, who we now learn just got tossed the lifeline from Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg who – one day after holding up the Chrysler-Fiat merger process – decided against the suit brought by some rather overly greedy debt holders and in favor of the Obama administration-backed deal that allows Chrysler to survive by partnering with Fiat. The alternative to allowing this deal to go through was a dead Chrysler in a town that really can’t handle too many more dead bodies right through here. It’s bad enough dealing with the dead who are really dead, but then adding the walking dead to the list of traumas is more than we can handle right now.

So anyway God Bless Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and fuck those three secured Indiana pension funds who tried to hijack this deal for more money. This ain’t the time to try and squeeze the lemon for more; this is the time for everyone to make do the best you can with what you got and be damned glad you got anything at all. If Ginsburg had sided with the pension mutts there would have been enough blood on the floor for all of Detroit to wade in ankle-deep. As it is there’s just enough to paint the floor red with several thick coats. It’s ugly, but it’s better, and better is a whole lot better than the other thing.

But we really didn’t think Chrysler was gonna make it, man. No more Lee Iacocca (may the force be with him), and no one with anywhere near the force of personality and persuasiveness – let alone that particular size of brass balls – to pull off Salvation Part 2. So we figured this was it. We’d probably wind up with GM because GM is just too damned big to fail, and Ford because of the sheer size of that rabbit.

But then there were Three. Again.

Didn’t they used to be bigger, though? I mean a lot bigger?

Another nice side effect of being on meds and in counseling is that I don’t feel so compelled

Another nice side effect of being on meds and in counseling is that I don’t feel so compelled to “pick a fight.” Of course, I don’t mean a fist fight, for I learned long ago that a guy of my size should avoid physical confrontation whenever possible. Getting tossed through a plate-glass window will do that too you. Okay, I exaggerate — I was thrown into one of those wire-mesh re-enforced glass window. It broke, spiderwebbing but not shattering. And really it was just my shoulder that went into it — no harm done. Now that I think about it, I actually kicked some pretty serious ass in that fight, which I felt compelled to get into when three punk-asses threatened my little brother — and get this, because the girl standing next to him mouthed off:

“Oh yeah. You would hit a girl,” said mouthy girl.

“No,” said punkass “But I will hit the guy standing next you.”

I remember not even thinking — I just popped the guy in the face as soon as he laid hands on my brother. Then his two buddies jumped me, but I was punching the one in front of me and then, on the cock back of my arm, elbowed the other one behind me — rapid fire. it was very Steve MaQueen or Bruce Lee, maybe Clint Eastwood. Someone tough like that anyway. And eventually all three of us crashed into the window. And now that I think about it, the guy that had me from behind, his hand was on my shoulder that went into the window, and it, his hand, took the brunt of the blow, cutting his knuckles and causing him to bleed. Stunned by the sight of his own blood (wuss) I clocked him a good one and then took the other one down to the floor. Which is all to say (besides bragging, I mean), I kicked ass, but that was the best fight I’ve ever had. It was all down him from there.

Anyhoo…where was I? Oh, yeah. Picking verbal fights, usually over politics, but about any debatable subject really. There was a time when I could do this without losing my cool, but over time I transmogrified from being simply argumentative into being the kind of dickehead that lays in wait like a cobra just itching for an opportunity to strike an unleash its venom on the poor soul that with misforutne of crossing its path. Often, I wasn’t even waiting, it was just there, roiling beneath the surface, and the tiniest thing could set me off. Instead of simply disagreeing with or refuting someone, I had to pummel them with my counter-argument. This was actually pointed out to me by someone who said that I could be pretty vicious and unrelenting in an argument, which isn’t to say that I was necessarily a good arguer just more aggressive. I had a sort of Cobra Kai, a la The Karate Kid, mentality — you know, Strike first! Strik hard! No mercy! Which served little purpose other than to convince people that I was a jerk; it’s not as if they would actually listen to me.

Anyway. Now, I don’t really feel the need to do that. Or if I do, I can contain it. Actually, I’d prefer to opt out of most arguments all together. Don’t misunderstand. I’ve got plenty of opinions and grievances, more than I know what to do with. It’s just that now I figure it’s probably better to keep them to myself. And, if I do feel compelled to enage, I’d rather do it in a less confrontational manner.

Example: I was following a discussion about the recent talk of a GM bankruptcy, in which the federal government would have a majority stake in the company. Actually, it was less of a discussion and more of bitch fest, which included reactionary comments that labeled the move as socialism, the buzz word of the moment, and renaming GM as Government Motors. Generally there was a lot of complaining about the government’s involvement, which seemed at least somewhat misplaced. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want the government running GM, but I don’t think that is what they are going to do. The government is not going to be running the company. They’re just backing it until it can get back to a paying/profitting basis. Although I doubt many of the people I saw commenting would agree with me. Not that they could prove their claim, but still…they heard it on Fox News, so, you know it must be true. Also, what seemed to be missing from the string of complaints was blame for the white-shirts running the company. I assumed that most of the people involved in the “discussion” either worked for GM or knew someone who did. I didn’t understand how they could give these guys (perhaps there were women too, but largely the largest automotive company in the world is run by men, and no doubt mostly white at that) a pass, but they certainly seemed to be.

And as for their gripes about the govt taking over GM: what is the alternative? Because I don’t think any of these people would be happy if GM just disappeared all together. And if any of them had an alternate plan they weren’t sharing it. My guess is they didn’t. I don’t either, but then I’m not bitching about the way it is being handled.

I admit it freely. I was an Obama supporter, a pretty virulent one at times. I drank the Kool Aid early and had no intention of budging. And I’m not sorry I did. I’ve been satisfied with the job Obama has done since he took office. And I’ve got no problem with the plan put forth to save GM. Because that is what it does — saves GM. The only alternative that I’ve heard prestented is the one espoused by the likes of Senator Shelby from Alabama and Mitch McConnell from Kentucky, among others, and that is to simply let GM and Chrysler fail, Ford to if it comes to that. Of course, these Republicans have Honda and Toyota plants in their states that are non-union, which I don’t really have a problem with either, not a very popular stance to take for somone living in Metro Detroit, and failure of any or all of the Detroit Three (it seems generally agreed upon that The Big Three is no longer an appropriate monicker) would mean more business and more money for their states. You can’t blame them for that, really. Their interest is their state. They don’t give a crap about Michigan.Fair enough, because I dont’ really give a crap about Alabama or Kentucky, although I hear the derby is pretty cool. I don’t know what Alabama’s got — college football, I guess. But what do I know. I do care about Michigan, at least as long I live here. C and I are talking seriously about moving to California or perhaps Texas, which has a very good economy right now. At this point, i don’t care which really; I’m ready to live in some other state other than Michigan, almost any other state, Albama and Kentucky not being one of them.

Back to my original intent in this post, before I really spin out of control and bore the reader to death. I’d have been inclined to jump into the argument, despite knowing that my view would be largely unpopular and not accepted no matter how I argued with it, which would only have pissed me off, and made me quiver with rage. Seriously, that kind of thing could really set me off. And that kind of anger/rage/anxiety is just draining. No wonder I was tired all the time. Now I’ve much more energy. Of course, I did sort of particapate, and that was by simply interjecting an article that suggested that the only people who were going to benefit from the GM govt-sponsored bankruptcy were the lawyers and accountants that will charge outrageous fees for their services in making it happen. That was it. And nothing else.

I’m feeling much better now. Aaaaah.

Forbes Magazine wants us to know they think Detroit is the most dangerous city in America. Lists lik

Forbes Magazine wants us to know they think Detroit is the most dangerous city in America. Lists like these are always subjective, no matter how many statistics they analyze before going to press. But even so, we know that Detroit certainly is no walk in the park. It can be dangerous. As Kym Worthy says in the article, it’s like we’re drowning and no one seems to notice.

Then there is our industry: Ford posted a huge $1.4 billion loss in just the first three months of this year. Chrysler is preparing to file for bankruptcy. And GM is shutting down production at plants across North America this summer, including several in Michigan that will leave workers unemployeed for up to nine weeks.

All of this is troubling. Big news, big players, big problems. And despite all of that, I find myself still thinking today about the couple in Eastpointe getting ready to bury a son just shy of his one-year birthday. Maybe it’s because I’m a mother. Or maybe because it’s simply a story with a face and name attacked. Maybe because I heard on the news last night that the boy was never alone with that dog, that the dog showed no signs it was about to attack — no growl, no bark, nothing. He just suddenly turned with both parents standing there watching and killed a precious son.Maybe it is because I read about how that couple had waited for 17 years to finally conceive their first child.

I suppose the thing to remember, as a Christian is this: God understands that pain. Jesus died himself a brutal death, and God felt that mournin of losing a cherished son. It is so hard when reading stories like that not to wonder why. I can’t answer that. But I can find some assurance in the knowledge that God gets it and mourns with that family.

My prayer today: God, in the face of so many negative stories, don’t let us lose sight of the fact that you love us, you are with us, you understand our pain. Let us turn to you and trust in you in times of uncertainty and sorrow. Lift us up. Give hope to those without work, protect those who live in and work in a city where sometimes crime goes unchallanged, and please, be with the grieving parents of that boy. Let them feel the prayers of strangers out there who are thinking of them in this big, dangerous, blessed city.

Although I have lived in Michigan almost my entire life, I’ve never had particularily close ties to our major industry. It’s taken me some time to learn just how important it is.

With the headlines over the last year, I’ve finally started paying attention. Late to the party is better than never showing up at all, right?

It’s very scary to think about what could happen to southeast Michigan if one of the Detroit Three failed. The trickle-down effect would be massive, touching not only those people who work directly for the automakers, but the people like me, those a few steps removed. We all need to be rooting for Chrysler, GM and Ford right now.

Today’s Free Press headline reads: Time running out to save GM. The article tells us: “With each passing day, the drumbeat grows louder that GM or Chrysler or both are careening toward bankruptcy, sending jitters through potential customers, not to mention active workers and pensioners.”

Lord, I’m going to make this one simple: please protest this vital industry here in Michigan! Let the people who can save these companies make the best decisions, the decisions that will save thousands of jobs and keep the automobiles churning out of the Detroit area. Move in the minds and hearts of those who stand in the way. Erase those “jitters” of potential customers, giving them confidence to support these companies and buy American cars. Give the workers in the plants and offices and those living on pensions some hope that their futures are safe. Maybe I’m asking for a miracle here — but I’m asking anyway. This industry and the people in Detroit need help. Keep these companies viable, Lord, however that can be.

Stan Fischler, ass-clown

Roughly a week has elapsed since our last look at the wisdom of Stan Fischler. For any new readers or those of you who have miraculously managed to forget about our New York Ranger-loving friend Stan, just click the link in the previous sentence for a brief refresher. Today, I’ll be looking at one of Stan’s more recent articles, where he laments New York’s Saturday loss to the powerhouse (read: 11th place in the East) Ottawa Senators, and fears the Rangers’ upcoming test against Western Conference super-power (read: 10th place) Minnesota. Let’s get started (once again, Stan’s comments are in Bold font).

Jacques Lemaire has a history of trying to unnerve the Rangers and on Tuesday night he’ll have an opportunity to put another hurt on them at The Garden.

Yep, the head coach of the Wild will be at his worst on Tuesday. Perhaps he’ll get behind the bench wearing only his tie and dress shoes. Maybe he’ll shout racial epithets at New York’s resident Mexican, Scott Gomez. YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT LENGTHS JACQUES LEMAIRE WILL GO TO!!!

Minnesota, emerging from a terrific triumph of its own on Sunday, will have erstwhile Ranger-killer Marian Gaborik — remember that five-goal game against New York in St. Paul’s last year? — back in the lineup

Remember that one time when that one player got five goals against us? Well, even though he’s been out due to injury for roughly 17 years, he’s back and THIS TIME HE WANTS SIX GOALS!

Torts got enough of a headache from an astonishingly revived Senators sextet

At NO point in this article does Fischler reveal what Ottawa players comprise this sextet. He DOES mention, in passing, the usual Heatley-Spezza-Alfredsson trie, and how they were held off of the scoresheet. So, zero points from the team’s three superstars.. Who is the astonishingly revived sextet? Or, Stan, were you simply saying “Senators sextet” to sound smart, because literary devices (ie: alliteration) are so essential to your successful survival?

The Big Three, but are they part of the Senators sextet?

For a time it appeared as if a double-dip win was in the cards after the Blueshirts had beaten Buffalo on Saturday.

That is, until the Senators sextet revived themselves, astonishingly.

Even better, Brandon Dubinsky broke a 24-game scoreless “schneid” to put New York ahead in the first with an adroit assist from Ryan (Never Quit) Callahan. At that point Auld appeared eminently beat-able.

Firstly, does Ryan Callahan REALLY need that nickname? Seriously? C’mon. The best part about this is Auld’s alleged “eminent” beat-ability. Any time a goalie gets beat on a goal set up by a great play (according to Fischler’s own words), does that mean the floodgates are really open? At the rate New York began this game, I would’ve expected a 14-0 victory.

Ryan Callahan (in blue) not quitting during a recent game

[Avery] worked on a line with Scott Gomez and Nik Zherdev but the red lights lacked batteries for them on this night.

Oh noez! It’z all teh batteriez faultz!!

A last-minute Avery wraparound in the third period was foiled by Auld; not to mention an apparent open net shot from about five feet in front by Nik Antropov which was foiled by defenseman Chris Phillips’ skate.

Holy grammar issues Batman! A comma or two somewhere during that second clause (you know, the incomplete sentence after the mis-used semi-colon) would be beneficial to any reader. Maybe Fischler just talks really fast, nottomention heis alsothebiggestassclownintheleague. And really, what is it an “open net” shot with a 6′3″ defenceman standing right there? (Yes, I spell ‘defenceman’ the Canadian way).

The Rangers power play went zilch-for-six and, brother did that ever hurt

If only the red light’s batteries had been charged! This could’ve easily been two-for-six.

Tortorella must now go back to the drawing board if for no other reason than playoff-seekers such as Florida — and, yes, maybe even rarely-losing Ottawa — remain in the coach’s rear view mirror.

Succinctly put, “the coach has to go coach because other teams, led by other coaches, are trying to make the playoffs too.” Insightful commentary like this cannot be found just anywhere and we’re privileged to read it.

… with yet another such challenge on the way it’s imperative that he fix the suddenly-ailing power play.

… And that he changes the batteries in those lights.

For the Rangers, the road to the post-season sometimes seems more like a tank trap with drill sergeant Tortorella desperately trying to steer his troops clear of danger.

Once again, Fischler hammers home this revelation that a coach’s duty is to lead his team, using a witty armed-forces metaphor (which counters any logical notion here). Maybe his final statement will tie everything nicely together…

And with the ever dangerous Lemaire coming to town, the song for his coaching foe has to be that old standby, “Beware, brother, beware!”

… Nope.
