Theo Keating aka Fake Blood aka etc. etc. is no mere new comer to the world of electronic music. He was making beats well over 10 years before coldplay fan indie boy NME readers starting masturbating over the identity of Fake Blood. The Wiseguys were Theo’s first big success, then going under the monkier DJ Touché (which he still uses occasionally) he and DJ Regal  formed the band in 1994. Their “Executive Suite” was realeased in 1996 and its now considered a  cult classic but in 1997 Regal left the band leaving Touché to work on the second album “The Antidote” which is where the Wiseguys achieved greatest success with the single Oh la la even reaching #2 in the charts. Many of the other tracks were featured on films and adverts. The album is also a classic, a collection of well produced hip hop and big beat (what has this evolved into?) tracks with Cowboy ‘78 being a favourite of mine. The Wiseguys project was finally disbanded in 2001.

Touche continued to remix and produce music under that name right up until the present day. In 2006 he formed the Black Ghosts with Simon Lord, ex singer with the band Simian (who are now… you guessed it – Simian Mobile Disco) Releasing a mixtape and an album in 2008.

In 2007 Touche decided to remix the Black Ghosts own track ”Anyway You Chose To Give It” under a different name and so the mystery of Fake Blood began. There is no doubting Theo’s love of music and it is clearly good taste and diversity (as the radio show below proves) that has kept his music sounding fresh and exciting for well over a decade.

We’re guessing that you’ve had your fill of Halloween treats the last couple of days (well, one last Twix bar couldn’t hurt). But have you ever stopped to think about the allure of this peculiar holiday? The influences on this (mostly secular) day of celebration are many. And although Halloween’s popularity spikes in the United States, many other countries now join in the fun. For some individuals, the opportunity to play dress-up and reinvent themselves is too exciting to pass up. For others, an entire population masking who they are and reveling in anonymity can be a bit disturbing.

In past years, Great River Radio has used this occasion to dig into our shared library and play music with an emphasis on Saints, Souls and Goblins. This afternoon we’ll take a little different tack as we bring you music inspired by the things that raise the hair on our arms (or backs!). You’ll hear music about darkness and shadows, homicidal maniacs and victims, graveyards and wild things. Don’t think of this as a stereotypical or clichéd attempt at playing Halloween music. We’ll have tracks from Great River Radio-endorsed artists such as Neko Case, Andrew Bird, Tom Waits, Joe Henry, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, M83, Eels and Band of Horses. We’ll have local music from Roma di Luna, Trip Shakespeare and the Suburbs. And we’ll even fit in listener request segment with some of your favorites. In other words, it’s the sort of quality music you’ve come to expect from Great River Radio. You’re not going to want to miss it.

Recently, I have not been able to stop listening to the United Kingdom-based electronic music duo The Black Ghosts, and more specifically, their song “Someway Through This“.   They describe their music as “perverse, personal pop music” and I have yet to find a song of theirs that I don’t like.  Below is the music video for your listening pleasure, and so that you too may be addicted.  You may be thinking that you have heard of The Black Ghosts, and you probably have; their song “Full Moon” was featured in the movie Twilight and is on the soundtrack.  PLEASE, don’t discredit them yet just because their music was featured in a teen vampire flick!  That song is by far the best on the soundtrack and I have not even begun to explain the the brilliance of the two men behind The Black Ghosts: Theo Keating and Simon Lord.

Both Keating and Lord have impressive track records before their union in 2006 and are, simply put, two extremely talented dudes.  Theo Keating, more commonly referred to as Touche, is the DJ and producer who used to be in the British electronica and hip hop band called the Wise Guys.  Their first album, Executive Suite is considered a cult classic and features a collision of jazz beats and hip hop music.  In 1998, their second album The Anecdote dropped containing their two most well known songs, “Oh La La” and “Start the Commotion“, which were used in Budweiser and Mitsubishi commercials.

The other half of this dynamic duo, Simon Lord, was previously the lead singer from the band Simian, who are best known for the song “La Breeze“. Take a listen; the song is super catchy and was used in a Peugeot 1007 advertisement. More importantly, it showcases how amazing and unique Lord’s voice is. But Lord’s voice is not the only talent he has, he also formed a splinter group called Simian Mobile Disco which does a lot of brilliant remixes and DJing.

Bottom lie, these two musically talented individuals have come together to form pure genius. They both share a fascination of Gothic horror brought on by their childhoods – Keating was encouraged to stay up late and watch horror films directed by his godfather and housed a child cemetery in his backyard while Lord’s grandmother was a practicing psychic with a strong interest in mysticism. Their backgrounds are evident in their music as most of their songs have a notable haunting element to them.  “‘Music, to me, has to have a certain atmosphere, whether it’s about pain or happiness,’ says Theo. So if you feel your world could do with an undercurrent of intrigue – or your discotheque needs haunting – just call The Black Ghosts.”

The Black Ghosts  es un dúo londinense formado por Theo Keating y Simon Lord. Tecnopunkeros capaces de sonar tan bailables y auténticos como New Order y, a veces,  tan suaves y melódicos como los Beach Boys. Eso sí,  ”I Want Nothing”, de su álbum The Black Ghosts (2008), se parece mucho más al Tecno británico de los ochenta que a la mítica banda de los hermanos Wilson.

Lyckades få ihop sextifem minuter musik till slut, och jag känner mig nöjd med resultatet.

The Black Ghosts is an electro-pop band from England, they managed to make pop music with extremely electro based synths. That’s what I like about them, they hace concept, but they’re easy to listen to.

Some Way Through This ( Skream + Plastician Remix) – The Black Ghosts.

‘Full Moon’ seems to have given The Black Ghosts some partially mainstream success after its feature in the soundtrack for teen vampire film ‘Twilight’.

The E.P is released on the 5th of April and features the radio edit and two fantastic remixes by Marlow and Appleblim & Komonazmuk.

In another life I used to sling coffee for the Starbucks corporation.  Oddly, one of my favourite, favourite things about the gig was the music.  Man, I wanted to work for Hear music so badly.  I used to send email after email to the Seattle office to some senior vice president chick trying to get a gig and god bless her, she returned every email and did her best to steer me in some sort of direction.

Of course, you know the story, I never got some radical music programming job in Seattle picking the coffee shop tracks for Starbucks compilation CDs but I did discover a whole world of music that I had not been introduced to before hand.

Now here I am, years later and I got a gig picking music for a restro-pub here in town.  In a round about way, living the dream.

The manager and owner gave me some direction in the style they want for the different day parts which is groovy and I am almost done, but then I stumbled on Damien Rice and I want to make a coffee shop inspired list.

I have a fond place in my heart for Damien.  When Coral and I started dating, she turned me on the man and that was about the time I went back to Starbucks (for the third time in life!) and Damien’s latest record was in rotation at the cafe.  Every morning, being up at 5:30 AM grinding the coffee of the day, jamming out some Damien Rice.  Good Times.

Maybe I’ll make one anyways, might be too mellow for the restro-pub but I’ll have the playlist for me.  It’ll have Damien Rice for sure… some Frames, Sia cuz she’s adorable… The Black Ghosts (its from the Twilight Soundrack… right at the beginning of the movie… I know I know, but its a really great song).  hmmm… what else?

12. Justice Vs. Simian – We Are Your Friends (Original Mix) [4:18] [time remaining 960:03] (Direct Link) (Alt Link YSI)

There was a point in time when I was sick to the back teeth of this song. But the thought of never being able to hear it again saddens me, so its pretty much essential to this list. This track sums up a very happy two year period of my life and I truly believe it is the most important dance anthem of our generation. Possibly the best track to hear as the clock strikes twelve on New Years Eve, the memories this triggers will always make me smile.

13. Sleater-Kinney – Modern Girl [3:01] [time remaining 957:02] (Direct Link) (Alt Link YSI)

Sleater-Kinney are without doubt one of the most important bands I have ever come across. Every single one of their seven albums are superb in my book, but if I’m talking autobiographically, it was their last release ‘The Woods’ which made a rather large mark on my life. Its because of this that ‘Modern Girl’ is the track that makes the cut. Intensely lo-fi, incredibly simple, yet an absolute beaut of a song.

14. The Dresden Dolls – Girl Anachronism [3:00] [time remaining 954:02] (Direct Link) (Alt Link YSI)

I’m going to be honest, I’m not what I would call a fan of The Dresden Dolls, infact I could count the songs I like on one hand. Girl Anachronism however draws me in and excites me everytime I hear it. There’s something very theatrical about this track, a real show stopper. The lyrics are dark and the recording is as raw as it gets, overall – intense.

15. The Black Ghosts – Anyway You Choose To Give It [3:38] [time remaining 950:24] (Direct Link) (Alt Link YSI)

A relatively new choice in comparison to alot of my list so far. The Black Ghosts put this track out as a single in 2007 prior to their first full length release the following year. ‘Anyway You Choose To Give It’ was my favourite track in its summer of release, I pretty much wore it out, yet it still holds strong for me. Both the dirty bassline and outright sexy lyrics give this track a real edge; A perfect opener for any mixtape you’re hoping will win the heart of the one you desire.

While Vancouver may very well be known as Twilight central to millions of envious fans at the moment—with New Moon shooting and Rob Pattinson roaming in our backyard—our city’s involvement with the vampire saga will, sadly, only be a fling.  Inevitably, after a few short months, the Twilight train will be pulling out of our station. 

But there is a place—a very real place—that will be married forever to this seductive cultural phenomenon.  It is a place where vampires and werewolves and mushroom ravioli are free to exist in their true forms. Forks, Washington. 

 Yes, it’s a real place.  And it’s where I spent my spring break. 

Twilight author Stephenie Meyer never actually visited Forks until after she published and sold millions of the first book in her four-book saga.  Any knowledge she had of the town was mostly from Internet research.  So it seemed any little coincidental nuances she included in the novel about the town were almost meant to be.

And because of Meyer’s imaginings, Forks has done a complete 180.  A mere few years ago, the town was barely clinging onto its glory days of being the so-called “Logging Capital of the World”.  The only tourism it saw was from fishermen taking advantage of the sparkling rivers of the Olympic Peninsula. 

But now, Forks is a booming destination for Twilighters from across the globe.  We here in Metro Vancouver have it easy.  Our pilgrimage route is not at all arduous.

My friends Deepak, Maria, and I took the normal route to Victoria via ferry.  From downtown Victoria, we hopped on a ferry to Port Angeles.  Both ferries took 1.5 hours each to reach their destinations.  Forks was then an hour’s drive from Port Angeles.  It surprises people that this mystical vampire haven is just on the other side of Vancouver Island.

Our home was the same as the Cullens’.  To us humans, it is the Miller Tree Inn.  The owners of this delightful bed and breakfast dubbed their home the official Cullen residence after an excerpt in the novel described the building as being over a hundred years old, painted white, and having a wraparound porch.  Pretty much spot on.

Homes and businesses all around town have similar stories.  A local schoolteacher was the first to put up a “Home of the Swans” sign in her front yard and her house has been a popular photo op ever since. 

Rare is a store without at least some sort of Twilight merchandise.  The interesting thing about all the paraphernalia is that it is mostly homemade, which makes it quite endearing.  Dazzled By Twilight is a newly opened super-emporium of sorts that sells Twilight gear only.  Again, most of its goods are not officially licensed, but instead seem to be products made for fans, by fans.

Restaurants cater to those whose hunger for Twilight extended to their tummies.  Forks Coffee Shop was undoubtedly the inspiration for the location of Bella’s graduation dinner in Eclipse, what with the elk head and all.  There we had “Jacob’s Blackberry Cobbler”.  We thought we could do better.  We preferred to call it “Jacob Black-berry Cobbler” or “Blackberry Jacob-bler”, oh yes! 

And the theme continues.  Sully’s Burgers has the Bella Burger.  The local Subway has a special Twilight Sandwich.  Pacific Pizza has Bellasagna served with Ed Bread and a side of Swan Salad.  You get the picture.

The one that takes the cake is not in Forks at all, but in Port Angeles.  Bella Italia was where Edward and Bella had their first date (I know… I substituted myself in for Bella when I read that part, too).  There I had the infamous mushroom ravioli.  At $21, I thought it was a mere Twilighter trap, but it was absolutely delicious in its own right.  Don’t forget to wash it down with Coke, just like Bella did.

The absolute highlight of the trip surprisingly had to be La Push.  Its breathtaking beaches are only a 20 minute drive away.  We decided we would gladly switch to Team Jacob if it meant being able to see its beauty everyday.  If you’re wondering, there is in fact a treaty line to separate the werewolves/vampires (“dogs”/“bloodsuckers”).  We didn’t think it’d be hard to choose a side before, but now we’re not so sure.

While we may not have considered ourselves “Twihards” or “Fanpires”, we did enjoy gallivanting through the area as an exploration of pop culture.  If you’re a fan, I’d encourage you to make a trip down (and make sure “Full Moon” by The Black Ghosts is blasting from the stereo… you know why).  We thought we’d be the only Twilighters in town—but whenever we approached a destination such as Bella’s red pick-up truck or Dr. Cullen’s parking spot at the hospital, a group of more hardcore, more decked out fans would already be there. 

I guess it all speaks to the success of the town’s makeshift tourism industry.  The charm of the place has to do with the townspeople’s enthusiasm in displaying bits of their everyday lives as something a little more magical to share with fans who are all too eager to drink it in.

If you put up a sign, they will come.
