-Batman ? Le film ? La série tv ? un animé ?
-Euuuh, c’était un dessin animé…
-Lequel ? celui de Timm, BTAS ? The Batman ? ou The Brave and The Bold ?

Blackest Night: Superman #3
Written by James Robinson ǀ Art by Eddy Barrows

Robinson abandons the horror-movie sensibilities of the first issue for more of the superhero fisticuffs we saw in the second. It’s enjoyable enough, I suppose, but I’ve always maintained that Eddy Barrows’ artistic strength lies in his ability to depict horrific scenes. The same could be said for Blackest Night as a series. I suppose.

Verdict: Check it out.

The Brave and the Bold #28
Written by J. Michael Straczynski ǀ Art by Jesus Saiz

The Flash travels back in time to World War II Belgium. Meeting the Blackhawks poses a complex moral question – when is it right for a man to kill another man? Is it ever right? JMS packs more depth into this one-shot than most writers achieve in a story arc.

Verdict: Must have.

Final Crisis Aftermath: Dance #6
Written by Joe Casey ǀ Art by Chriscross

Dance was an enjoyable mini-series all in all. Unfortunately, I think the series peaked the issue before, as its conclusion wasn’t as satisfying as I had hoped it would be. This may stem from my expectation that the Super Young Team would eschew all the product placement thrusted on them for good ol’ fashioned Japanese honour. Chriscross’ return was also not as brilliant as I had hoped – he didn’t ink his own pencils this issue, so that may have something to do with it – the overall product looks rushed beyond the opening pages.

Verdict: Check it out.

Justice League of America 80-Page Giant #1
Written by Rex Ogle, J.T. Krul, Rich Fogle, Josh Williamson, Chuck Kim, Derek Fridolfs, Amanda McMurry ǀ Art by Mahmud Asrar, Adrian Syaf, Eric J, Bit, Justin Norman, Jon Buran, Daxiong

More please! Everything a good Justice League story needs: epic, unbelievable feats of heroism, and unafraid of a little whimsy. A simple time-travel device sets up five thoroughly entertaining stories of superheroes outside of their comfort zones – Hal Jordan and Red Arrow in the Wild West; Superman and Dr Light in Feudal Japan; Vixen and John Stewart in King Arthur’s court; Zatanna and Black Canary in 1930s NY; Green Arrow and Firestorm in World War II; Steel and Wonder Woman on a pirate ship – for fish out of water, they feel surprisingly at home! This comic came out a few weeks ago, but sold out before I heard about it. Order it in if you have to – it’s worth it!

Verdict: Buy it.

Me explico a continuación.

One of the problems I’ve had with recent iterations of the DC ‘big event’ has been the fact that, whilst labouring away trying to find a new angle, the stories seem to have increasingly forgotten the significance of the genre they’re in. This might sound somewhat hypocritical of me as it seems like I’m judging titles for being ‘too much’ like their predecessors whilst not innovating and, part of that’s true in a way, as any kind of feedback I can offer on these books is going to be subjective.

It’s obvious that Grant Morrison, Geoff Johns, Mark Waid, et al. have a fondness for the legacy of these characters – it’s just…they have an odd way of showing it. The biggest problem with 52 is that it is, to be frank, boring. It deals with characters not in the mainstream whilst offering very little explanation of who they are or why Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman are absent. The other problem is that, in an attempt to be striking, the characters that are familiar are pushed in directions that never seem comfortable – such as Black Adam’s ‘is he/isn’t he a dictator‘ subplot. There’s never enough weight for this to actual appear as a feasible storyline, in fact, as the story progresses it begins to feel more and more like a case of a character being made to fit a ‘direction’ simply for the sake of it.

The two Countdown spin-offs were even worse with their characterisation however, to add insult to injury, neither of these titles actually managed to feature any kind of conclusion whatsoever.

I expected something better from these titles and, oddly enough, I found these very things – i.e. characterisation – were all to be found in greater degrees in Johnny DC titles such as Batman: The Brave and the Bold and DC Super Friends.

DC Super Friends #3

It’s odd that two titles designed to promote a cartoon and a toyline respectively should resonate more strongly in terms of how these characters think and act than anything currently taking in the mainstream storyline.

Perhaps there’s a lesson to be learnt from this.

Dr. Horrible brought Neil Patrick back to the world of Geek following his appearance in the Harold

Dr. Horrible brought Neil Patrick back to the world of Geek following his appearance in the Harold & Kumar franchise, but it seems that he’s definitely here to stay as he takes on the role of Gotham City’s Music Meister on Batman: The Brave and the Bold. In a show that captures not only the coolness of Batman but the fun and retro whimsy, it seems like there can finally be a musical outing for the caped crusader that won’t seem awkward or misplaced. We hope.

John Burlingame has the info:

Ready for a superhero musical? Usually the answer is, no, no we’re not. There’s been only one superhero musical of note: “It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane, It’s Superman,” which didn’t last four months on Broadway in 1966.

Admittedly, $40 million is being spent on “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark,” coming to Broadway next year. But even with Bono and the Edge doing the music, that’s a creative crapshoot, as conventional Music Meister in the grips of Batman wisdom has always been that it’s enough trouble persuading audiences to believe in flying crime-fighters wearing colorful tights, much less breaking into song.

Still, the producers of “Batman: The Brave and the Bold,” the animated series that airs Friday nights on the Cartoon Network, are confident enough in the first Batman musical — titled “Mayhem of the Music Meister!” — which they’re unveiling to fans Friday at Comic-Con International in San Diego before its airing when the series returns for its second season in the fall.

In this most lighthearted take on the Caped Crusader since the Adam West series of the 1960s, “How I Met Your Mother” star (and upcoming Emmy host) Neil Patrick Harris voices the villain the Music Meister.

“It was always in the back of my mind that a musical would be a fun thing to do,” says James Tucker, producer of the series. A musical theater fan, he enlisted his co-producer Michael Jelenic to collaborate. Together, they came up with what Tucker calls “a bare-bones framework of a plot to hang the songs on. We didn’t want to do ‘Les Miserables’ or ‘Sweeney Todd.’”

Batman, along with fellow heroes Green Arrow, Aquaman and Black Canary, and villains Gorilla Grodd, Black Manta and Clock King are powerless to resist the voice of the Music Meister, who naturally plans to control the world. Over five songs that occupy 18 of the show’s 22 minutes, the plot is revealed and foiled, along with a love-story subplot that fans of the DC comics will recognize and maybe even find touching.

This all started in July of last year, when Tucker and Jelenic met with “Batman” composers Lolita Ritmanis, Michael McCuistion and Kristopher Carter (all of whom won 2001 Emmys for scoring an earlier animated series, “Batman Beyond”). It would be up to the trio — who together have scored hundreds of Warner Bros. superhero cartoons dating to 1991 — to make it all work musically.

Ritmanis, who had the most experience working on musicals, acknowledges that she was “a little gun-shy,” knowing Music Meister belting that they had only three months to do what often takes a year of writing and rewriting. Yet, she says, “for us to be in on the beginning phase was thrilling, because usually we come in at the very end,” providing underscore that punches up the action dramatically or quietly supports the dialogue.

“They knew what they wanted the songs to do,” McCuistion adds. All three composers were impressed that the producers were following musical theater tradition in using songs to move the story forward. Tucker and Jelenic — neither of whom had any songwriting experience — went off to write lyrics, which the composers later set to music within specific musical styles.

Says Jelenic, “When we conceived a musical, we didn’t necessarily want to wink at the audience. We wanted it to stand on its own — yet some of the lyrics are really absurd.” He hopes it works for audiences on multiple levels.

The opening song, which introduces the Music Meister, needed to be part “Guys and Dolls,” part Stephen Sondheim, McCuistion said. Ritmanis got to write the big ballad “If Only,” in which several characters yearn for their imagined soul mates.

The biggest challenge was the finale, which Tucker says demanded “a big, over-the-top, Busby Berkeley feel,” yet at the same time, Carter adds, needed to function as a grand “tango of death.” There is also a rock number and a funny patter song in which all the villains complain about Batman.

Harris was everyone’s first choice as the villain, since he had done voices for “Justice League” and “Spider-Man,” and proved his musical mettle onstage in such productions as “Rent” and “Assassins.” Tucker saw him in “Sweeney Todd” at the Ahmanson Theatre in 1999 and remembered how good he was.

“Eighty-five percent of this episode is music,” says casting and voice director Andrea Romano, “so we Music Meister jumpsuited needed somebody who was going to be able to handle this quickly and easily. Neil just flew through his session. It really was a perfect marriage of role and actor.”

Luckily, most of the other regulars were talented singers, notably Grey DeLisle (Black Canary) and James Arnold Taylor (Green Arrow). Diedrich Bader, who regularly voices Batman, stepped aside for Jeff Bennett to sing in the final number.

Tucker thinks this concept would never have worked on the earlier Warner Bros. comic book shows, many of which he worked on as designer, storyboard artist and director. All were too serious in tone. “Brave and the Bold” was just different enough.

“We wanted to free up Batman to be fun again,” he says. “This show has been so wild and out of the box that we can do a musical and no one will question it at all.” The studio even agreed to hire a 28-piece orchestra, similar to that granted to the composers of “The Simpsons” and “Family Guy” but nowadays considered a luxury in children’s animation, which is usually scored with synthesizers and samplers.

Could the Music Meister return in another Batman musical? Ritmanis answers with a smile: “I have an idea that maybe he could return on Broadway.”

I’m sorry that there was no review up early today; my electricity was out from 9:00 AM to around 2:00 PM, and then my internet’s been out since Tuesday morning and I’ve literally just gotten it back working a few minutes before I put this up. I’ll have the belated review up later, but for now, here’s another Random Ramblings on my thoughts of television, manga, and just general stuff. Beware that there are spoilers for Bleach, One Piece, Star Wars: the Clone Wars, and Ben 10: Alien Force after the cutoff.

The State of the Economy

It bit me in the ass.

Star Wars: the Clone Wars: My First Impressions

Since there was a mini-marathon of the show today, I decided to watch some of Star Wars: the Clone Wars. The first episode I tuned into featured…Irish lemurs. Irish lemurs! On the one hand, I had a squee of joy at the fact that this species wasn’t relegated to non-canon after barely missing the cut for being in Episode III; on the other….Irish lemurs! The battle droids, on the other hand, are simply absurd no matter how I try to view it. They are presented as having a sense of humor and self-awareness of their mortality, something that was never insinuated beyond some silliness in Episode III, and certainly not what I would expect from an inorganic lifeform specifically created for the purpose of subjugation and destruction of opposing military might. Another point of contention I have is with the Neimoidian presented. While I am glad they dropped that abominably silly accent they had in the movies, I don’t think giving the fellow a “Hello, I’m a slimy asshole” voice isn’t much better. Anyway, the plot revolves around the leader of the lemur-people being a tightass who refuses to defend his people against the Separatists due to their culture’s religious traditions. Yeah, that’s subtle.

Despite not having done anything, the lemuroids are targeted as the test subjects for a new bio-weapon that wipes out organic life while sparing droids. I don’t quite see where they were going with this. The Separatists are a mostly alien alliance, and would most likely rather gather other non-humans to their cause. They aren’t the Empire, after all…in fact, that might have been where they were going with this, trying to fit the “evil empire” cog in places where it doesn’t go. Long story short, Irelemurs are inspired to fight by the Jedi, old grouchy Irelemur gives begrudging thanks, cut, print, take to market. Now I know that one episode does not a television show make, but I can tell from just this episode that there are things in question about this series that definitely aren’t my cup of tea (like those stupid comic relief battle droids). It’s been really “kidded-down”; Star Wars was never really fully for adults, mind you, but compare a scene of those bumbling battle droids to Obi-Wan becoming one with the Force in A New Hope and you’ll see my point.

One Piece: Magellan and the Hellish Impel Down

Oh. My. God. Just when I thought One Piece couldn’t get any more extreme, it takes it up from an 11 to a mind-blowing 12. The current arc is dealing with Impel Down, the World Government deep sea prison modeled after 5 of the 9 layers of Dante’s vision of hell, and the tension as the World Government prepares for war with Whitebeard. To anyone familiar with One Piece, you know that screwing with Whitebeard’s crew and in extension Whitebeard himself is one of the dumbest moves possible unless you want a huge fight. Impel Down itself is insane. Giant monsters, forests of spines, a giant furnace… Luffy just got himself beaten to near-death by the acidic waves of the demon-like warden of Impel Down, Magellan, and is now in the icy cells of Impel Down’s “frozen hell” layer. It’s looking like all the crap is going to hit the fan hard, and soon.

Ben 10: Alien Force: One (and a half) Seasons Later

I’ve been continuously watching this series from its inception, and…well, I have mixed opinions of it. The first big beef I have with it is that magic from the original series has been retconned into the power of energy aliens which happens to be called mana. This pisses me off to no end. You can file off the serial numbers, but in the end it’s still magic. That and you’re trying way too hard to retcon out the existence of the supernatural in the series, Alien Force writers. When dragons are retconned as being aliens hunted by the Forever Knights, something’s wrong. Oh, and don’t get me started on the Forever Knights! In the original, they were more or less alien tech hoarding Knights Templar. In Alien Force, they exist only to get the right tech to murder said alien-dragons. *Groans* I’m not too keen on Cooper going from a technomancer to a stereotypical overweight tech-nerd either. Now then, the good. The animation’s pretty well done. Most of the aliens (and I emphasize most; a few like SpiderMonkey and…urgh…Alien X are either silly or annoying) are fairly interesting, the fight scenes are usually well-executed, and the Highbreed are a genuinely threatening nemesis. Also, the “Ben is a mommy” thing? Would have been better with Gloop, since it’s, you know, a slime. Moths don’t exactly conjure up images of asexual reproduction.

Bleach: And Ichigo’s Down…Again

Why won’t you stay down, Ichigo?! Ulquiorra kicked your ass in his normal form, then kicked your ass in Resurrecion form, then once again kicked your ass in “Ultra Mega Super-Duper Hollow Form Nobody Else Has™”. Just stay down for once instead of going “Supreme Hollowbreed Doom-Vizard™”. Thank you.

Batman: the Brave and the Bold General Impressions

I like to think that they have Adam West enslaved somewhere writing the plot for this show. It’s immensely campy and filled with a ton of one-liners…but soooo glorious! Batman and Plastic Man fighting pterosaur and dinosaur-riding gorillas… *Bows* My only suggestion to the creators: never show Aquaman again. Your version of Aquaman makes the old Superfriends Aquaman look dignified. I didn’t even think that was possible!

Plastic Man: Are you seeing what I’m seeing? Because I’m seeing gorillas riding pterodactyls, with harpoon guns, stealing a boat.
Batman: It’s Gorilla Grodd.
Plastic Man: It’s messed up is what it is.

One of the really great perks of having twin boys is that I have a built in reason to watch shows like this. Oh sure, I’d be watching it anyway, but I can justify the space on the old DVR for the boys.

That being said, Batman: The Brave and the Bold is a whole lot of fun no matter what age you are.

Since debuting on Cartoon Network in November this show has been consistently enjoyable. Borrowing the conceit of the old Brave and the Bold comic books, it pairs Batman up with a different hero or heroes each week in crime busting adventures.

So far we’ve seen Plastic Man, Green Arrow, Deadman, Red Tornado, Blue Beetle and Wildcat, just to name a few, as the main guest stars. As a bonus, each episode opens with the tail end of another caper being wrapped up before the opening credits. We got the entire Green Lantern Corps in action before the credits.

And the credits are fun. They’re very art deco with an obvious homage to the 1960s Batman TV show.

The tone of the show is decidedly lighter than Batman: The Animated Series and that’s fine. They’re focusing on standalone adventures and introducing a new generation to some of these lesser known characters. And they’re doing a great job of it.

The animation isn’t sleek and edgy. Its actually rather square and retro. During one episode featuring Kamandi, I actually realized it’s quite Kirbyesque. How about that? Batman looks, for all the world, like a more muscular version of his Superfriends counterpart.

And who is the man with the voice beneath th cowl? It’s Deidrich Bader. That’s right, Oswald from The Drew Carey Show is Batman. As weird as that sounds, it really works. His voice is resonant and carries the hint of playfulness that runs through the entire series.

Batman: The Brave and the Bold airs Friday nights at 8 p.m. Give it a whirl. I really think you’ll enjoy it.

Bob Haney’s Brave & the Bold stories are fondly remembered for a variety of reasons. Firstly, Haney’s Batman had his own, ever changing continuity that was totally different from that of contemporary Batman or Detective Comics stories. The B&TB also Batman had flaws that the mainstream DC Batman did not, to the point where you would often wonder about his competancy. I think that the main reason why these stories were so popular is that for severalyears Haney was teamed with Jim Aparo, who in the 1980s would become the premier Batman artist.

I finally watched Batman’s latest animation series, Batman: The Brave and the Bold which debuted on

I finally watched Batman’s latest animation series, Batman: The Brave and the Bold which debuted on 14th November, and replaces the finished The Batman.

It was full of comic references, comedy, retro soundtrack, and was nearly as campy as Adam West’s Batman.

The goddamn Batman even smiled once or twice in this episode.

Guess what? I loved every minute of it. In fact, I went through the episode smiling and laughing at the jokes with my 13-year old brother (both of us DC fans).

In contrast, I nearly covered my eyes in fear during The Dark Knight, was horribly depressed after The Killing Joke, and grimaced with disgust after reading All Star Batman and Robin The Boy Wonder.

I love Batman as a dark and tortured man serving justice without compromise, but I’d much rather prefer this direction rather than letting Frank Miller ruin him. As Michael Jelenic, the co-producer and editor of the series stated in an interview with Wired:

I think the material has been taken as dark as it can go. These darker incarnations, like the recent movies and Batman: The Animated Series, have done it so well that it’s a tough act to follow. We decided to take a new approach, one that hasn’t been done before.

Instead of featuring Batman as the sole hero, or with the Batman family, the series pairs Bats with various superheroes from the rich DC universe. Appearances of obscure characters will definitely delight the hardcore fans, and looking at the list of upcoming partners, I can’t see Superman being mentioned anywhere!

The first episode, “The Rise of Blue Beetle!” paired Bats with Blue Beetle (Jaime Reyes) battling Kanjar-Ro in an alien planet. Batman served as the mentor cum “sidekick”, and he was even being all gracious about it! The episode started with a small scene with Green Arrow (a somehow younger-looking Ollie), where they introduced the recurring joke (if you call it a joke, that is) of Batman having everything in his utility belt.

I swear, I counted at least 7 gadgets/devices coming from his belt in this episode alone, which included a freaking sword. He’s like a bloody Doraemon or something. What a riot.

The next episode will feature Plastic Man. I predict I will laugh even harder.

A recent news bit over at The World’s Finest has me quite excited. The news? Warner Brothers

A recent news bit over at The World’s Finest has me quite excited. The news? Warner Brothers has a number of Batman animated projects lined up and that meshes nicely with my philosophy of the more DC animated projects the better.

Topping the list of upcoming projects is Batman: The Brave and The Bold. That animated series will debut on Cartoon Network on November 14, 2008. Each episode of the series will have Batman teaming up with different DC heroes to fight different DC villains. It is a brilliant concept and will benefit DC greatly in regards to getting some of the lesser known DC characters into the public eye.

Fans awaiting the release of Lego Batman: The Video Game might be interested to learn that an animated show based on Lego Batman is being developed. While just a trail episode is on the works I strongly believe the show will be developed further. I mean when you take two awesome things like Legos and Batman, how can there now be an instant ravenous fan base?

Rounding out the list of upcoming Batman projects is another brand new direct to video feature. Consideirng the succesful track record of Warner’s direct to video series I have little doubt that this project will continue that tradition.
