This one’s for the armchair philosophers out there, something I was contemplating mid-pie, Thanksgiving Day:

If you enjoy something ironically (say, an album by the Carpenters that you purchased on vinyl several years ago for a quarter and which has since given you countless perverse pleasures), and a dinner guest (say, your father-in-law) sincerely enjoys the exact same thing, is there anything wrong (for example, morally) if your personal enjoyment of the artifact in question involves (as it almost certainly must) the unstated judgment and devaluation of your guest’s aesthetic sensibilities?

In other words, should I feel bad if I quietly enjoy something for its kitsch value while a guest enjoys it un-ironically? Also, is it wrong for me to lie and say that I, too, sincerely enjoy said artifact? And if I announce that I really only like the artifact in question because I think it’s funny, and that, by extension, I find people who like such an artifact sincerely to be, in some sense, laughable, am I being rude, or just sincere? Even if I lie to their face, pretending complete sympathy and kinship, but secretly maintain an ironic distance, am I engaging in a form of hierarchical imperiousness whereby my valuation of my own aesthetic sensibility increases while my valuation of the guest’s aesthetic sensibility decreases?

I really don’t know. And I mean that sincerely.

Perhaps, though, it’s better just to admit you like the Carpenters and be done with it. After all, the guest in question probably just wants to share a common interest other than a mutual taste for pumpkin pie and a relative distaste for whipped cream. There’s no sense in breaking it down any further than that, perhaps, whether you believe what you’re saying or not, and no matter what you think of early 70s easy listening.

OK, so I know there might be a few songs missing that are considered classics, but these are my favorites:

1.	The Christmas Song (Nat King Cole)
Plain & Simple – The Gold Standard of Holiday songs by the Gold Standard of vocalists.
2.	White Christmas (Bing Crosby)
Bing’s Merry Christmas album with the Andrews Sisters is the best.
3.	Merry Christmas Darling (The Carpenters)
A contemporary standard, of which there are few.
4.	Christmastime is Here (Vince Guaraldi)
The music from Charlie Brown’s Christmas is classic and not just for kids. Scores of jazz musicians were influenced by Guaraldi, and this tune captures the mood and spirit perfectly.
5.	Do You Hear What I Hear (Whitney Houston)
Despite the turmoil in her personal life, Whitney has perhaps the most incredible pipes of any pop singer of her era. Her version of the Star Spangled Banner at the Super Bowl with the Marine Band backing her brings chills down the spine (and like these other pop start wannabees, she did it live).
6.	It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year (Andy Williams)
Not a huge fan of Williams in general, but I love his Holiday music. This is the most quintessential of his many Yuletide tunes.
7.	You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch (Thurl Ravenscroft)
I learned something researching this one. I thought it was sung by Boris Karloff who narrated the cartoon. Turns out he was given credit by mistake.
8.	Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy (Bing Crosby & David Bowie)
I remember watching this live on Bing’s Christmas special back in the 70’s as I recall. Seemed like an odd pairing at the time, but it turned out to be a wonderful collaboration.
9.	Silent Night (Barbara Streisand)
Many versions to choose from, but I like this one. Barbara’s A Christmas Album ranks among the best.
10.	Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow! (Steve Lawrence & Edie Gorme)
OK, so Saturday Night Live and others have taken their shots at Steve & Edie, but I’m telling you this version really swings.
11.	O Tannenbaum (Oh Christmas Tree) (Vince Guaraldi)
Charlie Brown part 2.
12.	William the Angel (Rob Mathes)
Better known in the music business as a producer and songwriter, Rob Mathes performed this song in his PBS concert Christmas is Coming: Rob Mathes & Friends with Vanessa Williams and Michael McDonald. An instant classic.
13. Some Children See Him (Sixpense None the Richer)
I remembered George Winston’s instrumental version from his December album, but the lyrics are so beautiful and I found this version that’s mostly acoustic guitar and vocals. Singer Leigh Nash has a childlike quality to her voice (You may remember the group’s hit single Kiss Me) that seems appropriate.
14.	Winter Wonderland (Dean Martin)
Dean does the fun holiday with that twinkle in his eye and playful vocal quality that we love. There are two arrangements of this one, but there’s one I listened to as a kid that’s really great. Believe it or not, it came from a compilation album that Texaco gas stations used to give away will a fill-up back in the dark ages, as I tell my son.
15.	Away in a Manger (Mahalia Jackson)
Really brings you back to the spirit of Christmas.
16.	Mele Kelikimaka (Bing Crosby & the Andrews Sisters)
Fun tune and a nice departure from snow and fireplaces.
17.	Feliz Navidad (Jose Feliciano)
Adds a nice international flavor to the list. This one also has stood the test of time.
18.	Frosty the Snowman (Jimmy Durante)
From the television special – with Durante, like Louis Armstrong, Louis Prima, and Dean Martin, there’s an audible smile in every note he sings.
19.	Sleigh Ride (Johnny Mathis)
Again, many versions, but I like the way Mathis interpreted this one.
20.	Oh Holy Night (Nat King Cole)
Another one that just sounds better by Nat.
21.	Silver Bells (Bing Crosby & Carol Richards)
From the Bing Crosby album previously referenced.
22.	I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm (Dean Martin)
Great tune not as widely known or recognized as a holiday tune until Rod Stewart butchered it on his standards album.
23.	Baby It’s Cold Outside (Blossom Dearie & Bob Dorough)
This song is a classic that has been recorded by hundreds of artists. This version is somewhat obscure – by two eclectic pianists/songwriters and jazz club performers also known for their work in the Schoolhouse Rock series.
24.	The 12 Yats of Christmas (Benny Grunch & the Bunch)
This one is essentially for New Orleanians by the king of colloquial musical references, Benny Grunch.
25.	Santa Bring My Baby Back (To Me) (Elvis Presley)
This one rocks and it just makes me chuckle. It almost sounds like someone doing a bad Presley impersonation.

I never realized how sad the lyrics to that song were until I listened to one of their greatest hits albums on repeat this summer. Perfectly depressing lo-fi sound quality on my little cardboard toy record player. Equally depressing is the weather forecast for the rest of this week:

Okay, this is really really an old song (but still delicious to heard slurppp…). I’ve just hooked by this song cause my best friend singing it all along on the karaoke (and she always choose this one). Well, somehow I’ve gotten like it too and tadaaa! I can’t get rid of this song from my mind!! (Even I don’t have someone refer to this song..).

This song is originally composed by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, but later got covered by The Carpenters duo, including this song in Close to You album. Through this single, The duo winning grammy award for Best Contemporary Performance by a Duo, Group or Chorus in 1971. It became their first Grammy Awards.

Later, this song has been covered by another singer or band, and can’t be denied as one of marketing strategy.

The Lyrics:

(They long to Be) Close To You

Why do birds suddenly appear
Every time you are near?
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you

Why do stars fall down from the sky
Every time you walk by?
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you

On the day that you were born
The angels got together
And decided to create a dream come true
So they sprinkled moon-dust
In your hair of gold
And starlight in your eyes of blue

That is why all the girls in town
Follow you all around
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you

And starlight in your eyes of blue.

That is why all the girls in town
Follow you all around.
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you.
Just like me (Just like me)
They long to be
Close to you.

Wahhhhhhhhhhh, close to you.
Wahhhhhhhhhhh, close to you.
Hahhhhhhhhhhh, close to you.
Lahhhhhhhhhhh, close to you.

Light their way when the darkness surrounds them…

Is this the beginning narration of a story about a beast or a line from a 1970’s pop song? In Carpenter’s Halloween Scott Bradley and Jonny Stax re-imagine John Carpenter’s 1978 Halloween movie as a musical. The Scooty & Jojo Show’s production uses the lyrics of Karen and Richard Carpenter to tell the tale of Michael Myer’s psycho ward escape and killing-spree homecoming. The results? Carpenter’s Halloween is a hilarious slasher reproduction.

“a kind of hush all over the world tonight”

Performed at Mary’s Attic, the show starts with and uses film footage projected on televisions to illustrate Michael Myer’s childhood transformation into psycho killer. The multi-talented cast, cardboard cars, live band and puppets transport you back to the familiar cult classic. The fear factor is gone as the campy show pokes fun of the movie’s scary elements 30+ year ago that, in hindsight, seem ridiculous.

“We’ve only just begun….”

Some of the best moments are new lines on the familiar script; “he always looks like that. He’s a puppet.” And “would Karen Carpenter have a second bowl of popcorn?” Leading the laughter is the stand out performance of Scott Bradley as Laurie Strode. Playing up the Laurie’s “Solitaire’s the only game in town loneliness,” Bradley hilariously mimics Jamie Lee Curtis’ memorable performance. One of many giggle-fests occurs when Lindsey (Ryan Guhde) and Tommy (Libby Lane) re-interpret the phrase “go upstairs and change your clothes.” Baby, baby, baby, aw baby I love Carpenter’s Halloween I really do!

WAITING FOR THE SHOW

Pre-show, we dined at Hamburger Mary’s (5400 N. Clark). In the past, I’ve had some issues with this popular hamburger joint. The convenience of the locale (the show is upstairs) and my compassion to give people a fourth try… It’s going to take some time this time… prompted a return. There were six of us and 45 minutes before the curtain. The service, if not friendly, was efficient (except for a mayo speed bump). I had one of the fall specialty drinks, a candy apple Manhattan and the small portion of the cheeseburger quesadilla. Both interesting flavors but a little more than I wanted. Just like before… the bill arrives in a high heeled pump (cheesy!)… it’s yesterday once more.

Post show, we went to the sponsoring bar and one of my favorite haunts, Marty’s (1511 W. Balmoral).

It was packed because Just like me they long to be close to you. Unfortunately, we didn’t score a table in front. Instead, we lined up in a single file along the windows and chatted with the person directly next to us. It wasn’t long before it was time to say Good bye to love and leave the cozy confines of the popular wine/martini bar and head out into the cold, wet night. Rainy days and work nights always get me down.

So, I finally saw last week’s episode of Gossip Girl. For my money, there is nothing surprising about Sonic Youth performing “Starpower” and bassist/guitarist Kim Gordon marrying Rufus Humphrey and Lily van der Woodsen-Bass-etc. The reason, as I will outline chronologically below, is that flirtations with mainstream popular culture is completely in keeping with their career. This cameo isn’t an isolated incident. If anything this network-savvy band pioneered how indie does synergy.

March 1, 1988: Ciccone Youth, a side project formed in 1986 between the band and Minutemen bassist/co-founder Mike Watt releases The Whitey Album. In this configuration, they took part of their name from Madonna’s surname. They also covered some of her songs, including “Into the Groovey” and “Burnin’ Up.” For good measure, they also covered Robert Palmer’s “Addicted to Love.” Were they taking the piss or celebrating 80s blockbuster pop? Maybe both? You decide.

June 26, 1990: Goo is released on DGC, marking their major label debut.

In 1991, the Goo video album is released, a clip accompanying each song on the album. Among them are “Mildred Pierce” which features Sofia Coppola dressed as Joan Crawford, who starred in the 1945 film noir of same name, “Disappearer,” which was directed by Todd Haynes, and a few clips directed by Tamra Davis, including “Dirty Boots” and “Kool Thing,” which also featured Public Enemy’s Chuck D.

September 17, 1991: Kim Gordon co-produces Pretty on the Inside, Hole’s debut album, released on Caroline, a subsidiary of Virgin.

July 21, 1992: Dirty is released. Two noteworthy music videos come along with it. Actor Jason Lee, then unknown, is featured as a tragic skateboarder in ”100%. The clip was co-directed by Davis and Spike Jonze, who just made some movie about kids and monsters based on a children’s book. Chloë Sevigny, once a Sassy intern, stars in “Sugar Kane,” which also showcases Marc Jacobs’ Perry Ellis grunge collection.

August 9, 1993: “Cannonball” is released as the lead single to The Breeders way-ruling Last Splash. Kim Gordon co-directs the music video with Jonze.

September 14, 1993: Judgment Night is released, along with a successful soundtrack from Epic that pairs alternative/metal acts with rap groups. Sonic Youth and Cypress Hill collaborate on ”I Love You Mary Jane.”

Cover to Judgment Night (Epic, 1993); image courtesy of brianorndorf.com

1994: Kim Gordon creates X-Girl with Daisy von Furth, a sister clothing line to Beastie Boys Mike D’s X-Large collection. I see DJ Tanner wear an X-Girl blue jumper on Full House and want one.

August 25, 1994: Sonic Youth contributes “Genetic” to the My So-Called Life soundtrack. Released on Atlantic, the compilation features other Juliana Hatfield, Afghan Whigs, Daniel Johnston, and (of course) Buffalo Tom, who every fan remembers played a show on Pike Street.

Track list to the My So-Called Life soundtrack (Atlantic, 1994); image courtesy of mscl.com

September 13, 1994: If I Were A Carpenter, a Carpenters tribute album, is released on A&M. An alternafest, acts like American Music Club, Shonen Knife, Babes and Toyland, and Matthew Sweet share time with SY, who cover “Superstar.” In late 2007, the song would make an appearance in the movie Juno.

October 27, 1995: CBS airs “The State’s 43rd Annual All-Star Halloween Special,” marking the MTV sketch comedy troupe’s network television debut. Sonic Youth is the musical guest. Few people watch (I am one of them), and CBS decides to pull the plug.

May 19, 1996: Fox airs ”Homerpalooza,” The Simpsons‘ penultimate episode of its seventh season. In it, Homer goes on tour with Hullabalooza (re: Lollapalooza), taking canons to the gut to the bemusement of thousands of jaded slackers. Several acts made guests appearances, including Smashing Pumpkins, Cypress Hill, Peter Frampton, and Sonic Youth. The band also provides an “alternative” version to Danny Elfman’s iconic theme song, perhaps getting closer in tone to what creator Matt Groening had originally envisioned when suggesting that avant-jazz composer John Zorn write the show’s theme song. The song is later featured on Rhino’s Go Simpsonic With The Simpsons: Original Music From The Television Series compilation.

June 5, 1996: James Mangold’s debut feature, Heavy, is released in the states. Moore composes the score.

June 1998: I watch the “Kool Thing” video at a Gadzooks in the Mall of America during a trip to Young Life camp in Minnesota.

July 13, 2001: Larry Clark’s Bully is released in theaters. Moore composes the score.

July 25, 2005: Gus Van Sant’s Last Days, the director’s take on Kurt Cobain’s final days, is released in the states. Gordon appears as a record executive based on Danny Goldberg trying to turn the main character’s life around. Moore also served as a music consultant.

May 2006: Former Pavement bassist Mark Ibold joins the band. This has nothing to do with matters of synergy or cross-promotion; I just happen to think he’s kinda cute. He was also featured in a comic strip, but the name escapes me. His catchphrase is something to the effect of “I’m Mark, the bassist from Pavement” but I’m butchering it. My friend Susan told me about it, so maybe she’ll share in the comments section.

Mark Ibold, perhaps around the time he was dating Oksana Baiul and before the Pavement reunion tour; image courtesy of amazon.com

May 9, 2006: Moore and Gordon appear with daughter Coco in “Partings,” the Gilmore Girls‘ season six finale.

June 15, 2007: Pitchfork reports that SY will be contributing a track to a Starbucks compilation.

November 21, 2007: Todd Haynes’s I’m Not There is released. Gordon’s makes a cameo as folkie Carla Hendricks, who is based on Judy Collins. The casting furthers my suspicion that SY friend Todd Haynes must have been influenced by the band’s fandom of The Carpenters and preoccupation with Karen Carpenter’s tragic struggle with anorexia. They cover “Superstar.” He makes a biopic about Carpenter called Superstar. Coincidence?

September 8, 2008: Choosing not to renew their contract with Geffen, SY sign with indie stalwart Matador.

November 3, 2008: Moore and former Be Your Own Pet frontwoman Jemina Pearl cover The Ramones’ “Sheena Is a Punk Rocker” specifically for “There Might Be Blood,” a season two episode of Gossip Girl.

February 16, 2009: Gordon debuts a clothing collection called Mirror/Dash for Urban Outfitters.

Is this bad? Hmm, maybe. I suppose it depends on your outlook. I’d say it’s no worse than The Flaming Lips performing on Beverly Hills, 90210 (although, maybe for it to be equal, Wayne Coyne would have to play a short-order cook at the Peach Pit). Beyond paying the bills and circulating their brand, I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a fair amount of post-modern, art-school, post-Warholian why-the-hell-not? factoring into all of Sonic Youth’s above-ground forays. Or perhaps they (gasp!) like many of these texts and ventures.

Perhaps the band knows that dabbling with the mainstream is tricky business. Maybe this explains why Moore (and, to a lesser extent Gordon and guitarist Lee Ranaldo, though not media-shy drummer Steve Shelley) cultivated an authoritative presence in recent music documentaries like Punk: Attitude, Kill Yr Idols, and I Need That Record! It may also have fueled a need for an outlet through which to channel more experimental projects, resulting in the band forming Sonic Youth Recordings in 1996, along with Shelley’s Smells Like label and Moore’s Ecstatic Peace label. In addition, Ranaldo has done a considerable amount of writing, creates installation projects with his wife Leah Singer, has an extensive solo career, and has performed improvisatory film scores as a member of Text of Light.

And, you know. The band is still really good. Even as folks mine their discography or weave them into above-ground mainstream corporate media culture enterprising, they’re still challenging themselves and making great music. Earlier this year, the band released The Eternal, their 16th album. Peaking at #18 on the Billboard charts, it also boasts a consistently great set of songs and a painting by late guitarist John Fahey for its cover. This blurring of art and commerce, for good or for bad, is in keeping with the band and their contributions to music culture.

Aí, genten, que emoção!

Estou quase terminando meu TCC!

Pop & Rock from the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s and 80’s rule!!!!!!!!

Tem coisa melhor que Queen, David Bowie, Beatles, Elvis Duran Duran, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Bon Jovi, Erasure, The Carpenters, ABBA, Rolling Stones, Raul Seixas (toca Raul!!!)… Ramones?!?!?!? Tocou Ramones na nossa festa!!! Fora todos os clássicos!

Rolou até I Just Can’t Get Enough do Depeche Mode – quase infartei nessa hora!

BUT, pero, eu não me incomodo porque eu amo essas músicas (claro que não rolou Ramones… imaginem – Hey, ho, let’s go!

Neste momento, eu me preparo psicologicamente para voltar à discussão do TCC *takes a deep breathe*

Written by: Chuck Berry-1955

Deep down in Louisiana, close to New Orleans,
Way back up in the woods among the evergreens,
There stood a log cabin made of earth an’ wood,
Where lived a country boy, named, Johnny B. Goode,
Who never, ever learned to read or write so well,
But he could play a guitar just like a-ringin’ a bell.

Go-go, go, Johnny, go.
Go, go, Johnny, go.
Go, go, Johnny, go.
Go, go, Johnny, go.
Go, Johnny B. Goode.

He used to carry his guitar in a gunny sack.
Go sit beneath the tree by the railroad track.
Oh, the engineer would see him sittin’ in the shade,
Strummin’ with the rhythm that the drivers made.

The people passin’ by, they would stop an’ say,
“Oh, my, but that little country boy could play.”

Go-go, go, Johnny, go.
Go, go, Johnny, go.
Go, go, Johnny, go.
Go, go, Johnny, go.
Go, Johnny B. Goode.

His mother told him, “Someday you will be a man,
An’ you would be the leader of a big ol’ band.
Many people comin’ from miles around,
To hear you play your music when the sun go’ down.
Maybe someday your name will be in lights.
Sayin’, ‘Johnny B. Goode tonight.’”

Go-go, go, Johnny, go.
Go, go, go, Johnny, go.
Go, go, go, Johnny, go.

There has been a deluge of rain around here for the past several days. So today on Open Mic Monday, “Rainy Days & Mondays” by renaissance woman Aeryn Martin. She’s got a good rich deep range. I probably shouldn’t have been, but I was surprised by how popular The Carpenters seem to be with Asian fans of karaoke and women who own 5 or more cats. But finally I found this version which I believe you will enjoy. Here’s to Sunny Days & Tuesdays coming your way very soon.

There seems to be quite the hate on for Mondays. I get that Monday means that the weekend is over and work/school starts it’s seemingly never ending cycle over again, but really, if you dread the thought of work on Mondays than you should probably find a new job. School is not so easy, but it gets better… for some.
Anyway, the point: Some of the best pop songs are about the atrocity of Monday, the first came into my head about 3 seconds after I woke up today as it is Monday and it is raining.

“Rainy Days and Mondays” by The Carpenters.

Oh, Karen Carpenter, how my heart breaks for you. Possibly the sweetest sad voice in pop history. I truly love this song even though the hook, “Rainy days and Mondays always get me down,” doesn’t apply to me. Quite the contrary actually. However, if you want a really good sad song, they don’t get much better (or worse). “What I’ve got, they used to call the blues…” What she calls it now, I don’t know and quite frankly, I’m glad she never figures it out. “Hangin’ around, nothing to do but frown…” She decides to “run and find the one who loves me” so it’s really not all bad. Maybe they will go on a nice Rain Walk, but “No need to talk it out, we know what it’s all about…” Karen knows it will pass, but she’s also not fooling herself into thinking that whatever is really bringing her down will be fixed as soon as the sun comes out.

“Manic Monday” by The Bangles.

The words say one thing, the music says another. So upbeat and catchy. If it weren’t for being ripped out of dreams, being late for work and running around (without Valentino), it might be the perfect way to start your week. Though I must admit, I did wish that my bed was already made when I got out of it today.

“I Don’t Like Mondays” by The Boomtown Rats.

One of the best piano intros ever! Possibly only surpassed by Hugh Laurie performing it on House. I don’ t completely understand this song. Sometimes I think it is about a mother who goes off her rocker, and other times I think it’s about teenage angst. Either way, I am sure that to late 1970’s British-Alt-Pop-Art-Rockers, fear of silicon chip powered brains seemed reasonable. Okay, maybe it’s about the treatment of women? Yeah, if we (the men of the 1970’s and earlier) keep treating our wives and mothers as waitresses and maids, they are going to snap and ‘we’ won’t have a clue what happened or what to do! Maybe, but I don’t really like that interpretation. I like to think that Bob Geldoff was worried about the advances of technology. All I know for sure is that even if my mother went berserk, the one thing I can guarantee she would not do is keep us home from school. Overall, this could just be a metaphor for the pressures of the corporate world, hence the main statement of the song. Whatever the song is actually about, you’d be hard pressed to find a more exciting pop song about the implosion of the human race! or the suckiness of going to school, however you want to look at it.

I happen to enjoy Mondays and I think that this week is off to a good start and just think, we’re already one day closer to Friday! Now I’m off to enjoy the rest of the rainy day, plus there is a Red Bull somewhere with my name on it. Ain’t that peachy keen?
