Hello everyone! I’m coming back from a holiday-related hiatus after a few days at my partner

Hello everyone! I’m coming back from a holiday-related hiatus after a few days at my partner’s parents’ house where I ate, missed Gloria Gaynor and Cyndi Lauper kill it at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, drank wassail, met up with some old friends, gave and received gifts, and beat the entire family at Wii boxing, the last activity leaving my arms and torso surprisingly sore. Oh, and I spent the past few hours belting Neko Case and pre-1986 Billy Joel tunes at full volume on the car ride home. So, I’m a little tired and hungry for leftovers. But to limber up and get back into the swing, I thought I’d offer up a quick post.

Driving back to Austin, I also listened to Smog’s A River Ain’t Too Much to Love. As Bill Callahan is a long-time resident of my fair city, I intended for the album to get my partner and me excited about our return home. But then I remembered a music video off this album that got me thinking about female actors acting in clips for songs by male musicians. What does their presence contribute to a music video and how might it change or deepen a song’s meaning? To be clear, I’m referring to protagonists — not creepy playthings like Kim Basinger’s corpse in Keir McFarlane’s music video for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ “Mary Jane’s Last Dance.”

Kim Basinger as Tom Petty's perfect and dead object of desire; image courtesy of fanpop.com

That said, having a female character serve as the lead to a male musical act’s music video doesn’t guarantee a progressive narrative, though does create interesting sites of discourse. She can be problematic as a result of how she’s characterized, what she might suggest about the song’s meaning, or how the director has chosen to frame her. And of course an actress offers her own on- and off-screen personae to the proceedings, often complicating matters when she crosses entertainment mediums.

Click on the song titles below to access the music videos and consider how these actresses’ presences might make meaning. Also, feel free to offer up any other suggestions as well, particularly if you can come up with more representations of actresses of color or any examples of female actors serving as protagonists in hip-hop music videos for songs by male artists.

THE CHEMICAL BROTHERS

Exit Planet Dust

Junior Boy’s Own / Virgin

You Can’t Sit Down«, Eddie Floyds »Raise Your Hand«, Gary U.S. Bonds »Quarter to Three«, The Sonics »Have Love, Will Travel«, Isley Brothers »Twist and Shout« eller någon av alla de låtar som genom åren ingick i bandets evigt föränderliga Detroit-medley.

»The brothers gonna work it out, the brothers gonna work it out«.

»Rockin’ All Over the World«, »Sweet Soul Music«, »Do You Love Me?«, »Devil With the Blue Dress«…

Festen vägrar ta slut och skivan fortsätter snurra. »In Dust We Trust«, »Fuck Up Beats« och »Chemical Beats«.

THE CHEMICAL BROTHERS Live At the Social Volume 1 Heavenly/BMG Att det står The Chemical Brothers hä

THE CHEMICAL BROTHERS

Live At the Social Volume 1

Heavenly/BMG

Eric B & Rakims »Juice (Know the Ledge)« från soundtracket till Ernest R. Dickersons film med samma namn, Cash Money & Marvellous »Mighty Hard Rocker«, Funk D’Voids »Jack Me Off« och Crooklyn Clans fantastiska »Yes We Can«.

»To a Nation Rockin«, »The DMX Will Rock« och »Mighty Hard Rocker«.

Japp.

Lately I’ve noticed an influx of ’80s throwback formulae. Maybe it’s just my personal bias in searching it out, but regardless, it’s good. Going with a video on this, I wanted to shed light on Ali Love, who is not necessarily a newcomer, but somebody you may haven’t heard of. In 2007 Ali (full name Alistair McLovan) provided the bizarre, eclectic vocals for The Chemical Brothers hit song ‘Do it Again’ (which has a pretty funky [video] itself). Although the song was a high mark of his still early career, Ali lost momentum that same year in the poor reception of his single, ‘Late Night Sessions’. He was subsequently dropped by Columbia, and only this year did he sign a new record deal with Back Yard Records.

However, setbacks aside, his name now seems to be popping up everywhere (mostly due to this new track) and an album is said to be on the way too (no date as of yet). It’s for the vocals that you’ll love ‘Diminishing Returns’. It contains those brief, timely lyrics that are held tight by an expertly crafted tubular discharge, compounded still by far-reaching, scratchy synths. By song’s end, despite it’s title ‘diminishing returns’ (perhaps in reference to his past failure), you’ll be left only wanting more of that head-boppin’ beat, reminiscent of a time when the dance scene was the only scene (even if it was in your basement). I’m giving you the extended version for download, as it does more justice to that sense of fleeting and arriving all at once that the vocals take on. So throw on your ’80s cap, I know what i’m bein’ for Halloween.

I’ve gone with the Chemical Brothers ‘Do It Again’ video. It’s a classic Chemical Bros. tune and a top-notch vid to go with it. Since the Brit electronic duo Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons arrived on the scene in the early 90’s we’ve come to expect nothing less. ‘Do It Again’ is off The Chemical Brother’s 2007 We Are The Night album CD which went into the UK charts at #1. It also reached #65 in the Billboard 200 and won a Grammy Award for Best Electronic/Dance Album. So basically it’s good stuff yeah!

Delphic.?

i really splashed out last week – i’ve been commenting of late on the fact that i don’t spend money on cds like i used to. a) because the price has generally come down, and b) because i’m always keen to find a bargain. one collection jumped out at me however, and i was more than happy to shell out €20 for it.

this compilation brings together a host of tracks from the famed junior boy’s own stable. it’s a really british label, and so it’s a really british compilation. i don’t mean that in a bad way whatsoever. some of (if not) the best people in british dance music history feature on this comp – underworld, the chemical brothers, pete heller, and of course, the granddaddy of british techno, andrew weatherall. you’ve also got acts like the happy mondays and primal scream, proving that the whole dance/rock crossover is nothing new, and it was far better before the days of ironic indie boys and pointy haircuts.

i was but a nipper when most of these tracks came out, and a lot of them are completely new to me. i know the whole nostalgia thing is completely clichéd and this release could well be seen as just a cash-in for the label big-wigs, but for me it’s a delight to get a chance to listen to this collection right now, at a time when the electronic spectrum seems completely caught between two generations, neither of which is keen to budge.

this is reflected by the recent appearance of an article on resident advisor article titled “the esoteric art of the opening dj” – an article which has provoked discussion on all of the major dance forums i frequent. everyone seems to agree that warming up is an essential part of a given night and that lashing out anthems as soon as the door is open just doesn’t work – so why do people still do it? one theory i have is that a lot of people who are trying to get into the dj world right now just don’t know their history, or, if they do, they don’t respect it. dance music hasn’t been around that long, and at the moment everyone seems far too concerned with having something brand new and fresh, rather than just playing good music, irrespective of age. this is compounded by the fact that, in today’s climate, something from way back in 2007 will sound ugly and dated, while something from the mid to late 90s will still fit into any set with relative ease.

as in my last post, i seem to be coming off all cantankerous, which is silly. i’m 24. i just see a whole load of problems in this scene, and even thinking about trying to reconcile urgency with respect and reverence with excitement clearly causes a major headache. to return to what started this whole tgv of thought, releases like this seem to serve two distinct purposes: to remind people of the so-called classics, or to introduce young’uns like myself to tracks they should really know already. if there was any justice in the world it’d fly off the shelves and onto the ipods of every budding dj out there. i guess you can’t have everything.

it’s funny how when people end up in a club that really isn’t for them, they try to make

it’s funny how when people end up in a club that really isn’t for them, they try to make out like they’re not the one with the problem. last night at transmission i had a pair of girls come up to me and repeatedly ask for: pop music; songs with words; songs people know; songs people can dance to. at this stage of the night i had already played tracks by boys noize, daft punk and the chemical brothers, so it wasn’t like i was digging my tunes from the depths of obscurity. while the club wasn’t as full as i’ve seen it at present, the dancefloor was by no means empty, and the majority of those on the floor seemed to be enjoying themselves, what with the odd “ooee ooee ooh” chant and some very happy dancing faces.

i understand that when one pays into a venue one can expect that the dj is there to entertain you. i’m relatively new to this game, so i’m not above at least listening to requests. i’ve talked the ear off plenty of djs in my time. at the same time, if you arrive at a night that isn’t playing the sort of music you like, you can’t expect the music policy to shift entirely because you don’t like what you hear. i’m a huge fan of jay-z, have been for over a decade, but i’m not about to play run this town because one girl in the crowd thinks boy 8-bit is “shit”.

i know i’m not the first dj to express this sentiment, and i certainly won’t be the last. i might seem like i’m running off some righteous indignation, and to an extent i am. that said, i couldn’t help but laugh at the situation. especially when the stuck on repeat vocals kicked in and one of the complainers recognised it and, thus, waved her hands in the air and started dancing. maybe playing all 9 minutes of alexander robotnick’s epic remix was asking a bit much…

anyway, this is pretty much what i played.

Valió la pena la espera? Totalmente. Aunque bien lejos de mi casa, estrenaron por fin Be Kind Rewind

Valió la pena la espera? Totalmente.

The party continues in my office. The bass in pumping, the crowd are swinging their arms around like

The party continues in my office. The bass in pumping, the crowd are swinging their arms around like they just don’t care (whoever does care about their arms swinging around (other than in the presence of low ceiling fans)?) and the sniffer dogs are having a field day.

OK, that’s all wishful thinking (other than the dogs… and the bass).

Irrespective, I’ve been having fun. This is a pretty strong album. It features one of this insanely catchy songs you’ve probably danced to too many times (well, I have) – this one:

There are some very familiar voices on here, including a blast from my past New Order’s Bernard Sumner doing that whole dry, talkie vocal thing that has worked well on so many tunes. And Hope Sandoval from Mazzy Star sounds as breathy and spacey as ever.

There’s also a vocoder riff on the opener that had me doing Kraftwerk impressions all day (“Musique non-stop, techno-pop”).

So the upshot, is the CBs showcase their roots, and their diversity (Noel Gallagher also gets a rockier workout) and deliver a solid collection. It doesn’t have the consistency of their debut, but it’s still a fiesta of fun.

File under: Buckle under to the beats
