There’s only one thing better than a good concert, my dears: a FREE good concert.

As part of the NXNE festivities, Sirius presented a series of free sets on their stage at Yonge-Dundas Square, featuring some of the hottest acts secured by the event. That right there deserves a special note of acknowledgement from my pocketbook: any music festival that allows you the opportunity to see GZA from Wu-Tang Clan for free alongside hot rising stars like The Cliks and Wintersleep is a festival that actually still cares about the fans, at least a little. Nicely played, NXNE.

I decided to swing down and check out the aforementioned Wintersleep and The Cliks on Friday night’s schedule. I’d seen The Cliks before at a Toronto Pride event (also free) and enjoyed their energy, and Weighty Ghost by Wintersleep alone had me convinced to give them a try.

First up, The Cliks. Fronted by trans-singer Lucas Silveira, The Cliks deliver a grungy punk-pop sound blended with a more bluesy folk undercurrent. The end result is what I imagine would happen if Melissa Etheridge collaborated with Karen O. – and it’s a good thing. Belting his way through older tracks and a heavy sampling of their new release Dirty King, Lucas demonstrated why The Cliks are worth taking notice of: stage presence. I’m not going to tell you that their songwriting is particularly innovative or brilliant; it is solid and incredibly enjoyable. The Cliks live, however, bring that proverbial ‘it’, leaving you shaking your ass and nodding along enthusiastically without any reservations. They’re the band you wish would play your local bar every Saturday. Some artists are simply made for the live circuit, and Lucas Silveira definitely fronts one of them. Speaking again of Melissa Etheridge, how on earth has she not considered bringing this Toronto-based act along for a tour? Their sounds would gel beautifully, and I can only imagine the duets that could happen (I would LOVE to see a Like The Way I Do combo of these voices).

The cliks.com is your source for more information, videos and all sorts of fun.

Closing that night’s sets were Halifax’s Wintersleep, a band that blends the airy folk sensibilities of Jens Lekman with a more progressive ethereal sound remiscent of Arcade Fire’s Funeral. I’d scanned a few reviews before attending and noted that, above all else, this band was known for delivering a live show. I have to say that they do just that, stretching short songs into epic instrumental jams and harmonies that remind me of Roger Waters and his ilk. One slips into a trance as they perform, the mind wandering away into another plane and train of thought, each jam building steadily, the music layering back upon itself. I would compare it to M83, minus the electronic 80’s vibe. Their studio work does not even begin to touch what happens when this band hits the stage; it is truly magical, and an example of what a live show should do – it should transform the music, making the live show worth the experience.

wintersleep.com is the place to go to learn more about this band.

this is an absolutely amazing week of new releases. almost everything comes highly recommended by yo

this is an absolutely amazing week of new releases. almost everything comes highly recommended by yours truly.

first and foremost is the fifth studio album by the mars volta, octahedron. this album is the least like their predecessors. it is not the usual high-energy, horns-a-blastin, falsetto-screeching, amazingness that most people know them for. this album is a lot more chill. it’s been described by them as their “acoustic album.” it’s a sit back and relax album. if you want to dance your ass off to some insanely talented latin influenced prog-rock then any of their other four albums are just what you need.

anything the mars volta does is highly recommended by this guy. so if you are new to the mars volta i suggest starting with their critically acclaimed, mind blowing studio debut de-loused in the comatorium, then going in chronological order. put this album on the back burners. but if you are well versed in the genius that is the mars volta then sit back, do what you do, put this record on, and chiiilll.

other than the mars volta we have so many great new releases, darkest hour, daestro, regina spektor, the budos band, dinosaur jr., foreign born, he is legend, sunset rubdown, pete yorn, and tortoise, just to name a few.

click the “read the rest…” link below the picture to check out the rest of the new releases. a. k. a. “after the jump.”

I’ve been meaning to post a review of the opening night of the New York Dolls “‘Cause I Sez So” tour, with The Cliks opening for them, from last Wednesday night (5/20/09) at the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach, CA, but haven’t gotten around to it. Short review: GO SEE THIS SHOW!!! Especially if you’re on the west coast and get the great opportunity to see The Cliks (“Snakehouse” and “Dirty King”) open for the New York Dolls!!!! I figured if I don’t at least post these videos now, I might not ever get around to it. (Laziness ensues…) I’ll try to write more later, especially on the main reason I went to the show, the incredibly talented The Cliks, whose new CD “Dirty King” is fantastic, and available at the show, as well as various online options such as iTunes for $11.99, “Snakehouse” for $9.90.

In the meantime, here are the two videos I was able to tape before “the man” decided to pay me a little visit to say I couldn’t tape the show. Hmmm, interesting that there are COUNTLESS NY Dolls live performance videos online, as well as COUNTLESS Belly Up Tavern videos online, yet I couldn’t tape in order to spread the NY Dolls love? In all honesty I was fine with not taping and just enjoying the show. I did tape several Cliks songs, but unfortunately the sound is pretty bad–too close to the speakers, I think. Anyway, here ya go with some New York Dolls.

Opening video, with the NY Dolls coming on stage to opera music. Song (Looking for a Kiss) starts about one minute in.

Last few seconds of this video of “‘Cause I Sez So” are when Mr. Security Man was telling me no taping, hence the camera going black.

Echoes April CD of the Month: Morgan Doctor: Other Life You can hear an audio version of the Echoes

Echoes April CD of the Month: Morgan Doctor: Other Life

You can hear an audio version of the Echoes Blog, with Morgan Doctor’s music.

Morgan Doctor is one of those musicians who finds herself between worlds. The music on her new solo album, Other Life, is marked by imagery laden instrumental journeys colored with Indian instruments and ambient designs. If Morgan Doctor just wrote beautifully evocative instrumentals, that would be enough, but she also has three heart breaking vocal tunes with Tamara Williamson, who wrote and sang the lyrics.

Morgan Doctor: I’ve absolutely admired Tamara for her ability to write songs that are meaningful, a little esoteric that come from a deep place in our heart, and it’s funny because if you met her, she’s just really crass. She not really into anything spiritual at all but then she comes up with these very deep lyrics.

Morgan Doctor

Although this music has a serene quality to it, you’re more likely to find Morgan Doctor pounding a set of trap drums with a power pop trio called The Cliks. Big on the LGBT circuit with a transman lead singer, The Cliks, are exuberant, sassy and raw. Morgan Doctor’s own music is introspective, moody and tending toward the spiritual. She’s a world music percussionist who’s just as likely to play Indian tabla drums in a Kirtan session with Durga Das as mount the stage with The Cliks. But Other Life is more progressive than it is meditative. Odd time signatures and layered and textured arrangements make her compositions cinematic in scope. Her album is Other Life, and she creates other music, falling well between the cracks.

Morgan Doctor: it exemplifies this huge terrain of ground I like to dabble in which is world music which is trancey, sort of ambient, not traditional ambient music, but has that quality. As well as pop music, you know, singer-songwriter music. Yeah, so, I know surprisingly enough people are playing it for yoga class.

Her second solo album, Other Life, is a CD of transcendent ecstasy and subversive melody. It’s the Echoes CD of the Month for April. We’ll be featuring it next Monday, with an interview later in the month. You can also read a full review of the album. This has been an Echo Location, Soundings for New Music. You can hear Echo Locations every Wednesday at 9:35 AM on WXPN in Philadelphia (www.wxpn.org) For an audio taste of this blog and Morgan Doctor’s music, you can hear an audio version of this blog.

Something happened today. Something strange and unusual. And unexpected. It involved a song. Or more specifically, a song called ‘Oh Yeah’ by a Candanadian band called the Cliks. I’ve heard this song many times before. It is one of my favourite songs. As always, it started with that grinding eight bar drum and guitar intro. But this time was different somehow. As I was driving there in my car, trying to simultaneously switch gears, fix my hair and pump the volume while pulling on a cigarette clenched between my teeth and changing lanes, I experienced something very strange indeed. A sensation which can only be described as something akin to arousal.

‘How peculiar.’ I thought. ‘This song is doing it for me.’

And so it was.

I realized something then. I’d been waiting for this song for a long, long time. More accurately, it’s one of those songs I wish I’d written. Where had it been all my life? I’d been waiting for someone to write this song in particular, because Lord knows I wouldn’t be able to. And here it was. Dirty, raw, simple. Strong chorus. A rugged androgeny. I was whipped.

It’s only polite for one to get to know a new lover (before it jumped me in the car today ‘Oh Yeah’ was just a song, not a lover) And when one is trying to get to know a new lover, one must always google them (or is that just me?). And, oh, the joy! – The Cliks are an all girl band. Well, sort of. The lead singer is a gorgeous transgender called Lucas Silveira. He is responsible for ‘Oh Yeah’. They’re all very nice to look at, might I add. I hope they tour South Africa eventually – I’d like to thank Mr. Silveira for a great lay.

Which brings me to my next interesting little incident for today.

At a robot in Rondebosch, I was accosted, once again, by one of those guys trying to sell ugly little wire bead flowers. This particular guy has accosted me many times before. This is how the encounter went:

”Hello my lady! Would you like to buy a beautiful Valentine’s rose?!”

”No thank you dude.”

”But they are sooo beautiful!! And for you – a special price.”

”No thank you dude.”

”Eish, but they are so nice! Special price!”

”No thank you dude.”

AND THEN…. he points to my frontloader (an ominous gesture, under any circumstances):

”Hey! Janis Joplin! That is some GOOD MUSIC! (sings) Take another little piece of my heart! She was at Woodstock!”

I blink at him.

”Fine, how much?”

I had been successfully coerced. I mean, come on. The guy knew who Janis Joplin was. THAT’S as good a reason as any to buy an ugly wire bead flower. I’m telling you, shock tactics are the easiest form of a hard sell. To be honest, it made my day.
