“Pirate Radio/The Boat That Rocked”
a review by Darby O’Gill

Hands down, the feel good movie of the year! Before Howard Stern, and even before Wolfman Jack, a band of rogue deejays rocked the airwaves. In 1966, at the height of the British Invasion, rock and roll was only allowed to be played on British radio stations for barely two hours a week. The only way people in the U.K. could listen to rock or pop music was by tuning into pirate radio stations broadcasting from boats just off the coast of Britain in the North Sea. In Pirate Radio, previously released as The Boat That Rocked, earlier this year in the U.K., writer/director Richard Curtis tells a fictional story based on the true events of Britain’s rock and roll revolution. Broadcasting live 24/7 from an old tanker turned makeshift radio station, anchored just outside British jurisdiction, is a band of misfit deejays known as Radio Rock.

The story begins when Young Carl is sent by his mother to the ship known as Radio Rock, to spend time with his godfather Quentin, the owner of the radio station, who is played by the always brilliant Bill Nighy. It’s very much a coming of age story, and I think the British equivalent to Cameron Crowe’s Almost Famous. Once on board, Young Carl meets the motley crew of deejays. There’s The Count, the flagship American deejay that is constantly pushing the envelope and crossing the line, masterfully portrayed by Philip Seymour Hoffman. There’s the always charismatic, and at times narcissistic Doctor Dave, played by the extremely funny Nick Frost. Another familiar face is that of Flight of the Concords’ manager Brian, actor Rhys Darby, who plays the self proclaimed funny man Angus “the nut” Nutsford. Even though all the faces may not be familiar, this is truly an all-star cast. Each performance is so masterfully executed that you can’t help but feel the authenticity of this film. However, I think one of the most unsung heroes of this film is Ike Hamilton, who plays Harold, the ship’s booth technician. If you watch Ike’s performance throughout the film, I guarantee that you will be totally blown away. Every little nuance that he brings to the character of Harold just radiates brilliantly off the screen. If you’re reading this after you have already seen the film, I highly recommend seeing it again for Ike’s performance alone. But, if you’re anything like me you’ll already want to see this movie again regardless.

The other side of this story is that of the British government and their efforts to stop the pirate radio ships from broadcasting. This task is helmed by Sir Alistair Dormandy, played by Kenneth Branagh, and his new assistant Mr. Twatt. I’m not kidding, his last name is Twatt. And, yes Richard Curtis takes full advantage of it. Twatt is played by Coupling’s Jack Davenport. Now, don’t worry. The political stuff doesn’t weigh down the story at all. Mostly because it’s not an overpowering plotline and it also lends itself to some of the film’s funnier scenes. I dare you not to laugh or at least snicker every time Dormandy says, “Twatt.”

Richard Curtis has, as always, done a masterful job telling this story. His unique vision, and heart warming style of storytelling, makes Pirate Radio/The Boat That Rocked a must see film. Every part of this film oozes 1966. The wardrobe is fantastic, the soundtrack is to die for, and even the look of the film itself sets the tone. It’s almost as if the film was shot and processed in 1966. Adding to the film’s authenticity, the bulk of the movie was shot onboard an actual ship, just off the south coast of England. Richard Curtis’ first cut of the film had a running time that was just over three hours. The final cut of The Boat That Rocked had a two hours and fifteen minute running time, where as the final cut for Pirate Radio has a one hour and fifty-six minute running time. I’ve seen the U.K. version of the film and enjoy both cuts, but I have to say this film is so enjoyable that I wouldn’t mind sitting though the three hour cut at some point. Most of the missing scenes from the first cut of the film appear on the U.K. DVD release of The Boat That Rocked. (U.K. DVD review will be posted soon) The two major scenes that were cut from The Boat That Rocked for the U.S. release of Pirate Radio consists of a visit to the Radio Rock ship from a large group of contest winners, and the other is the unseen stag party in London. The scenes aren’t necessarily needed, but this movie is so, as I said before, enjoyable that I don’t think you could ever get enough of these characters.

I realize this review is quickly becoming a mini-novel, but I think I would be crucified if I didn’t at least talk about the music in the film. As you would imagine, this movie is chock-full of classic rock from the likes of The Who, The Kinks, The Turtles, and so many more. Both the U.K. release, and the U.S. release of the soundtrack feature a two disc edition with 36 tracks to take you back. Also, the opening credit graphics are fantastic! The use of the radio tuner dial transitioning from scene to scene, as The Kinks’ “All Day and All of the Night” blares, instantly sucks you into the world of the movie. But, I think one of my favorite things was the use of the album covers in the end credits. It not only instills you with a fantastic sense of the history of rock and roll, but it also makes you want to listen to some great albums you might not have listened to in awhile. The bottom line here should be obvious at this point, but needless to say I highly recommend this movie no matter which version you see.

The very first episode of Sesame Street aired on November 10, 1969. I can’t believe it’s really been 40 years. I watched the show with my sister as she grew up, 15 years younger than me. I watched it again in the mid 80’s with my children.

Who is your favorite Sesame Street character? Mine is The Count, absolutely the most wonderfully quirky character on the show.

Forgot that today is the 40th season for Sesame Street.

Just watching it now and its different and watching it on HD.
I did see Michelle Obama’s segment on planting vegetables.
Ernie & Bert has their own segment called “Bert and Ernie’s Great Adventures” and they are in CGI animation which I am kind of saddened since I like them as muppets.

With that I found the Google section which they have their logos with the Sesame Street characters.

My favorites are:

Would...you be...my neighbor? (Oops, wrong show...)

If you think it’s not easy being green, imagine how hard it is to be yellow! Carol Spinney has been playing the part of Big Bird since Sesame Street debuted on television forty years ago today. You may not realize that Spinney started playing the character while in his mid-30s, so the guy lifting that five-pound head with his arm is still doing it in his 70s (and no doubt he could whip you at arm-wrestling as well). Just one of the thousands of tidbits that will no doubt flood the Internet today as we celebrate and appreciate the program.

Sesame Street probably did as much to promote Public Television as those channels did to promote the show, a landmark exercise in combining educational television with entertainment. I was just old enough to be above their target demographic, although later on I’d come to appreciate the many adult moments the show offered (see below). I don’t know anyone today who grew up in the era who doesn’t have fond memories of watching the program.

A couple of generations ago most kids had two parents, and one of them was usually home. Mom or Dad could read to them and teach them the alphabet and how numbers worked so when they went off to school it wasn’t as intimidating. But over time the divorce rate started skyrocketing and many households suddenly needed two earners, and time with children became a precious commodity. When Sesame Street came along, for once sitting a kid in front of a television as a babysitting exercise wasn’t a bad thing.

But watching the show with your kids had greater benefits. Eventually, along with basic math and reading skills came life lessons, presented in a way that children could understand and discuss with their parents.

What imagination went into these characters and the program. Although never the most popular, my favorite was always The Count. That probably explains why I love Greg The Bunny as much as I do. (“Don’t turn this into Abbott and Costello, kid!“)

I also grew to like the human characters who interacted with the Muppets, like Gordon and Susan and Bob, and the list of celebrities who guested is staggering. As a result, just like with Rocky and Bullwinkle and the Road Runner cartoons, Sesame Street has a lot to offer adults, too. Like…

Sesame Street Ensemble

It’s been 40 years and only when Google celebrated it, did I realize that a fav show from my childhood is this old. I was introduced to Big Bird, Grover and the rest of the characters of Sesame Street less than 20 years back.

Even though I knew my numbers and alphabet, this show was mesmerizing. There were quite a lot of muppets and a bunch of kids. Last weekend the sky opened up while I was driving, I started singing the song:

It’s a rainy day,

It’s a rainy day.

It’s raining outside

I can’t go out to play.

Why do we need the rain

Anyway?

My companions in the car were Siya and Lakshmi. Former was hanging out her head and enjoying the drizzle, but latter quizzed me about the song. I wondered which pop artist sang it before it hit me that it was from Sesame Street. Just checked out now and Youtube has the video I enjoyed.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DlljkLsdc2A

There’s another about milk. Milk reaching the crying child from the dairy farms. I knew about the source of milk from the cows at my grandparents’ place. But this was an eye-opener for me how it reached other people.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9O-Q5vJ-GHk

I didn’t care that some of the shows were reruns. There were so many songs, games, muppets, but I can’t believe that I was scared of the ‘Count’. Every time he laughed, lightning would strike in the background. And he had vampire-like teeth – well, he’s supposed to be the vampire. Sheesh, I used to close my eyes sometimes when the Count came up.

Ernie and Bert were cute. The modern version of this pair would be Chandler and Joey from Friends.

Ernie & Bert and Ducky

Looking through these videos on Youtube brings back old memories where I’d be sprawled out on the bed watching TV. I was quite disappointed when the show stopped on the local channel. But I’m glad to hear that the show still goes on with more fun stuff.

I learnt agua (water), casa (house), enchiladas, etc from this show. There were a cast of diverse adults and kids and that’s how the Spanish came up.

Scars of Dracula is a 1970 British horror film directed by Roy Ward Baker for Hammer Studios.

It stars Christopher Lee as Count Dracula, alongside Dennis Waterman, Jenny Hanley, Patrick Troughton, and Michael Gwynn. Although disparaged by some critics, the film does restore a few elements of Bram Stoker’s original character: The Count is introduced as an “icily charming host”; he has command over nature; and he is seen scaling the walls of his castle. It also gives Lee more to do and say than any other Hammer Dracula film except its first, 1958’s Horror of Dracula.

Trivia:

Jenny Hanley was dubbed by Nikki Van der Zyl.

Dennis Waterman was Hammer’s choice; Roy Ward Baker has said in interviews he thought Waterman was badly miscast.

The last feature of Toke Townley

Last Hammer horror of Michael Ripper.

Scars of Dracula is the first Dracula film to attempt to capture the scene in Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel where the Count actually crawls out and climbs along a wall in a bat-like manner, the only difference being that in the Stoker novel, Dracula climbs down, while in Scars of Dracula he climbs up.

This is the second Hammer Dracula film to feature a servant to the count named “Klove” (the first was Dracula: Prince of Darkness, though the role was played by a different actor in each film.

Next week marks the 40th anniversary of Sesame Street. On November 10, 1969 Jim Henson’s creations brought their brand of teaching kids how to count and learn the alphabet. Sesame Street has the esteemed honor of being the longest running children’s program on US television.

To help ring in their 40th season, Sesame Street has enlisted the likes of First Lady Michelle Obama, Jake Gyllenhaal, Christina Applegate, Kobe Bryant and Nancy O’Dell.

Sesame Street has made famous characters popular to children all over the world: Big Bird, Oscar the Grouch, Snuffleepagus, Cookie Monster, The Count, Kermit the Frog, Bert & Ernie, Grover and Guy Smiley.

Here are some of my favorite Sesame Street moments:

Kermit The Frog sings “It’s Not Easy Being Green”

Everything I know I learned on The Street…. Sesame Street. And today, on the show’s 40th anniversary, I want to give credit where credit is due.

Without Big Bird and the gang, I never would have figured out exactly what things are not like the others. This logic has helped me weed out the good guys from the frat guys at parties, and the under-cooked hamburgers from the well-done ones at the dining hall. Sesame Street has single-handedly saved me from STDs and E. coli.

Ernie and Bert taught me how to cope with living with a roommate and how to pick up on subtle undertones of romantic feelings from them, too.

And the Count, well he taught me how to count… slowly… and then faster… and then slowly again.

When Jim Henson first brought us Sesame Street way back in 1969, the concept of educational television programming was revolutionary. Even though kids today have a variety of shows they can watch, I’d still pick Sesame Street over most of the programs out there.

My kids, who are four and two, absolutely love The Count, Ernie and Bert, Oscar the Grouch and Cookie Monster.

I have to say, the show is definitely not just for kids. There is some good adult humor mixed in. That’s what has made the show stand the test of time! What do you guys think? What’s your favorite scene or episode?

I’ve always loved when The Count and Cookie Monster are eating apples or when Ernie and Bert break out into song and dance in their bedroom. I was touched when Mr. Hooper died and who could forget the film “Follow That Bird”.

Happy Birthday Sesame Street!

As I take inventory there are now 24 fountain pens in my collection. That’s four more than I

As I take inventory there are now 24 fountain pens in my collection. That’s four more than I’ve committed to collecting. My pen storage boxes were built to hold no more than 20 pens. Accumulating pens happens far too easily. New pen discoveries lead to other pens to explore.

When I began exploring fountain pens my greatest interest was how much ink a pen could hold and what pens seemed to have the least waste associated with them. Thus piston filling pens became a prime focus because they potentially held a good amount of ink and didn’t use plastic ink cartridges, but filled directly from a bottle of ink. Of course, the size and weight of the pen mattered much and still matters. A pen must fit comfortably for long hours of writing by hand.

There’s a more difficult element in pens I find difficult to quantify. It is the feeling a pen evokes when writing with it. Sometimes I don’t notice the feeling, and the pen is just a wonderful utilitarian tool. Other times, a pen evokes a wonderful feeling that seems to aid in creative and inspired thought.

My Wahl Pen is one such pen. When I’m writing with it the pen seems to carry on a welcome conversation with me and the page. The Skyline Demi is another, as is a 1950’s Pelikan 400, the modern Bexley Submariner, the acrylic Conklin Crescent, the Edison Huron, and the vintage Visconti Ragtimes.

The Aurora Optima Mini, however, serves a great utilitarian purpose, as does the vintage Kaweco Sport. Both pens are small enough to carry on me when, for example, I’m at the theatre and need to take a quick note. Such purposeful pens do not need to make my hand sing when writing. They merely need to write when called upon, and when waiting they need not leak inside my pocket.

It is this emotional element I wonder about when I take stock of the number of pens and think about which four must find new homes. Under consideration are two Pelikans, a modern M200 amber demonstrator and a 1950’s 400 brown tortoise, an Omas 630 demonstrator, a Stipula 22, the Conklin 25p, an Eversharp Skyline, and a Visconti Pontevecchio. All of these are fine pens that I love, yet may love just a little less than others. Some of them have flex nibs, and I’m not so sure I’m a “flexy” kind of writer. Maybe I only need one flex pen to have on hand. I have three Pontevecchios, and do I really need all three? The Stipula holds a lot of ink but how much do I use it?

Sometimes I think I should treat getting rid of pens like taking off a bandage: Don’t think about it. Just move fast and be done. I have done this. Quickly getting rid of pens in order to acquire others.

Then I think I should make sure I know them all better before making a decision. Take six months and make sure each pen is rotated into use.

Of course how many pens I keep is not a problem or much interest, I’m sure, to anyone. It’s entertaining to me and a way to relax my mind off the real troubles in the world. It’s about keeping a personal commitment about accumulating “things.” It’s about being in the present moment with what I have and paying attention to the real work of my life.

And so I’m not sure which ones will go. I do know no more pens can come into the stable, and there are four to cut by the Spring.

Svensk titel: Boat that rocked
Originaltitel: The Boat That Rocked
Genre: Komedi
Produktionsland: England
Premiärår: 2009
Regi: Richard Curtis
Skådespelare: Philip Seymour Hoffman, Bill Nighy, January Jones, Gemma Arterton, Emma Thompson, Kenneth Branagh, Nick Frost, Rhys Darby, Tom Wisdom, Jack Davenport

One of the hardest things for me over the past week has been my medication management post-oral surg

One of the hardest things for me over the past week has been my medication management post-oral surgery. The antibiotics I’m on are supposed to be taken four times a day half an hour before food and two hours after I last ate.

“Shuh!” I commented to a friend. “Two hours since I last ate?? I mean, when is there ever two hours in a day when I’m not eating?”

(It’s true: I graze all the live-long day, constantly stuffing my children’s left overs in my mouth such as apples with one single bite taken out of them, saliva-infused toast and cold fries languishing at the bottom of the Happy Meal box. I’m like the Noo-noo from the Teletubbies, who must surely suffer acute indigestion from hoovering up all those Tubby Toast and Tubby Custard accidents. And if you don’t know what the hell I’m talking about, I would count yourself very lucky, if I were you. Very lucky indeed.)

“I’m reading a very interesting book about overcoming overeating,” my friend replied.

“And what’s the secret to overcoming overeating?” I asked.

“I don’t know. I haven’t finished it yet,” was her response. Which is exactly my problem with any kind of book or article or even gate-fold pamphlet about dieting because I have usually wandered off to see if there is any chocolate left in the Treats Cupboard before I get to the punchline. Particularly if there are things like milligrams of fat or “points” to take into consideration. I mean, if I’d wanted to spend my days measuring and counting shit, I would have become an Apothecary or gotten an apprenticeship with someone like The Count von Count, who is called The Count because he loves to count.

Anyway, it made me wonder if there was a book about under-reading about over-coming over-eating. Probably. But I’d never finish it.

Interestingly enough, my issues with alcohol are same same but different. Health Care Professionals recommend between two and three standard drinks per day for women. And yet, as a mother, I’ve identified at least fifteen Key Alcoholic Beverage Opportunities (KABOs) of an evening:

KABO #1: Having a drink to celebrate my husband arriving home from work.

KABO #2: Having a drink while I’m making dinner (also known as “The Chef’s Perogative”).

KABO #3: Having a drink so as not to Officially Die Of Boredom when supervising bath time.

KABO #4: Having a drink when The Pixie’s squealing hits its upper-most register (circa 7pm).

KABO #5: Having a drink while watching television with my husband, particularly if it is really bad television.

KABO #6-13: Having a drink after each appearance of a child at the door saying they’re “scared” or claiming that one of their siblings “whacked/smashed/looked askance at me”.

KABO #14: Having a drink to celebrate that moment when the kids are finally asleep.

KABO #15: Having a drink when the TV is turned off for the night and I realise that the next working day is virtually upon me.

So, with so many opportunities for drinking, you’d think I’d spend most of my evenings blind drunk. However, contrary to popular opion, I am much better with alcohol than anyone might think. You see, I’m a “delayed gratification” kind of girl and I totally wait until the kids are asleep, so that all that white noise and static electricity they create doesn’t hamper my enjoyment of a nice glass of ice cold bubbly. Then I really enjoy those last two KABOs for all their worth, all within the remit of the Responsible Drinker.

Unless, of course, it’s been a bitch of a day. In which case, nothing’s standing between me and that bottle. Nothing.

Food and drink issues? I’ve got dozens of them. Dozens, I tell ya! I’d count them all, but I’m far too busy stuffing my face with party-bag booty. And there’s the truth.

com·post (kŏm’pōst’)
n.
1. A mixture of decaying organic matter, as from leaves and manure, used to improve soil structure and provide nutrients.
2. A composition; a mixture

The above definition of compost is courtesy of dictionary.com, and technically could be called accurate. But don’t you think it shortchanges the magic of horticulture? I say “magic”, because what else can you call it when substances as disparate as coffee grounds, carrot toppings and bread—subjected to the forces of bacteria, sun and rain—combine to form a life-giving substrate?

What has this got to do with Tartitude? Hahaha. Good question.

It’s merely that my brain is fried from a totally AWESOME critique group meeting last night; and that I’m not organized to have a post done in advance; and that my commitment to you folks is to have something to say at least three times a week.

That is to say, you’re getting some odds and ends today, which in and of themselves, would not a blog post make. But combined…

First up, a link my thirteen-year-old son recommends. And not to pressure you, or anything, but he’s watching keenly to see how many of you choose his video over his sister’s.

Next up, my daughter’s choice – a skit I somehow missed in my period of Monty Python indoctrination:

Lastly, my own link, which comes via Smart Bitches, Trashy Books. I love it for its title, for the delicious inappropriateness of its subject, and because it lets me know that no matter how far I might go at the Tartitude, there are always others who have pushed that line just a little further.

To help families celebrate the upcoming spooky Halloween holiday we’ve unveiled a line of four limited time only Shandles that will let you dress your bathroom up for Halloween. The Shandle makes a better toilet costume than a cape or that greasy traditional Halloween makeup, plus you’ll always be reminded to wash your hands after going to the bathroom.

The four designs are only available for a limited time (until 10/31) and include Happy Witch, Frankenstein, The Count and Pumpkin Head.
