I picked up the latest record from Kid Congo Powers & The Pink Monkey Birds after reading an LA Weekly article a few weeks back about the eclectic roster on In The Red Records. I also heard Mike Watt talking about him on the Watt From Pedro Radio Show…I didn’t know that “The Kid” aka Brian Tristan had at one point played guitar with The Cramps, Gun Club and Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds. Kewl.

Kid Congo Power’s ”Dracula Boots“ is a potpourri of dirty junkie riffs soaked in reverb and, like The Cramps, and it’s a trippy, gritty listening experience. It’s like watching a film noir flick on acid while sharing a bowl of popcorn with the creature from the black lagoon.

Kid Congo’s backstreet psychedelic boogie is just the antispectic needed to cure the music world’s Gaga-pop staff infections. I dig it. Here’s “Rare as the Yeti.”

I was getting ready to go out on a date the other day, and “Garbageman” by The Cramps came on the bathroom boombox. I love The Cramps and I miss them.  They kind of hung it up when their lead singer, Lux Interior traded in his mortal coil for a halo and a new pair of skin-tight, snakeskin pants in February of 2009.  I was lucky enough to see them once at The Ogden on New Year’s  Eve in 2000.  It was a magical show.





Lux spent the entire night slowly stripping off his clothes and channeling the illegitimate swamp demon spawn of  Wanda Jackson and Frank Booth.  Ivy, Lux’s wife and The Cramps’ lead guitarist, serenaded his breakdown behind a giant, gold Gibson (295?).  At this point, both of them were in their middle 50’s and they still looked and sounded amazing. I think they could have gone for another fifteen years, at least.

Lux and Ivy were freaks.  They worshiped at the altar of low-brow, uniquely American kulture and cloaked themselves in B-sci-fi/horror and exploitation flicks, hot rods, two-fisting amphetamines and nitrous, sleazy sex, motorcycle gangs, go-go dancers, fetish magazines, hillbilly records, pulp fiction, switchblades, gender-bending, circus side shows, kinky pinups, and depravity.  In other words, The Cramps were my kind of people.

I can’t resist one more Halloween post.

The Cramps used to play every year in San Francisco on Halloween (usually at The Warfield, but also at The Fillmore).  I usually ended up going alone, but a couple of times I was able to persuade friends to go and they ended up enjoying themselves.  (Why don’t people learn?  Miss Kim won’t steer you wrong!)

One of the funniest shows was at The Warfield when Lux Interior was drinking from a bottle of wine and scaled up to the balcony with a blow-up doll to put on a show up there.  He later threw his microphone stand down and almost hit Poison Ivy, but she kept playing while shaking her head at him.  Eventually, he broke the wine bottle so he could start cutting at his skin-tight body suit, but he accidentally cut himself and had blood running down his leg.

Unfortunately, Lux passed away a few months ago and The Cramps are no more, but I’ll never forget the energy and humor of their music and those shows.  Here’s a little taste of what they were like live!

This is a special Halloween mixtape, feel free to download it if you want. I threw it together this afternoon in the midst of a hangover. Apologies for the quality of the track “Dragula”. The bitrate was really low and i only realised halfway through the mix. I would have left the track out if i’d known but i recorded the mix all in one go and made the mistake of not checking the quality of the tracks first. Like i said i was hungover and it was a last minute thing. I just had a quick browse through some of my music files and took the songs i thought to be most apt for a Halloween mix.

Happy Halloween, from your resident hell-raisers

Everyone has been really excited that Saturn has finally gone into Libra, and it is kind of an exciting thing, really, considering that Saturn is exalted in Libra. I’ve been reading a lot about finding balance in relationships, rediscovering the importance of fairness, taking beauty seriously- all very good stuff. It’s sweet but not too sweet, like salty caramel.

HOWEVER. The Sun and Mercury are still in Scorpio and in a wide-ish sextile with Pluto. And the Moon and Mars are currently in a fire trine. And tomorrow is Halloween for God’s sake, you guys! Come on! Saturn will be in Libra for a LONG time. Let’s enjoy some dark and scary and definitely NOT pretty while it’s traditionally appropriate.

My Nana and Papa lived in a condominium complex called Winston Towers, located in the in the Rogers Park neighborhood, right near where you could say Chicago either begins or ends, as the city of Evanston and the North Shore is a few blocks away.   The series of buildings is well-known among many who grew up in the surrounding suburbs as “Cabrini Greenberg” for its large number of middle aged and senior Jewish occupants. Looking back, it would be easy to say they look like just about any other set of buildings — in that they are totally unremarkable save for the swimming pool with the huge smiley face — but in one of those buildings, I found refuge from the turbulence of my childhood much the same way many kids do: television. And for kids, the world of Chicago television was a wonderful place, which I guess according to the book The Golden Age of Chicago Children’s Television (Lake Claremont Press, 2004), I missed out on.  But maybe missing out on Kukla, Fran & Ollie, Garfield Goose in the 1980’s was what helped me discover a television personality that maybe wasn’t created for kids, but certainly spoke to some.  His name was Svengoolie*, and looking back, I could say he was one half Marx Brothers, and one half fodder for songs by The Cramps.  Back in those days, though, he was more than just a simple comparison, he was the coolest guy on the television set.

For all the love of trash culture that many of my friends and I throw around, Svengoolie seems to have never been given his proper credit, past a cult following of ADHD kids who stayed up late to watch 3 Stooges re-runs only to find some weirdo in corpse paint talking about “Berrrwyyyyn” and getting rubber chickens tossed at him as he re-introduced an entire generation to the wonders of b-horror flicks.

So, in honor of nostalgia, and of course, the spookiest day of the year, I present Svengoolie.

One thing I should point out, is that the Svengoolie I grew up with is actually the “Son of Svengoolie”. Here, for your viewing pleasure is the original Svengoolie, played by Jerry Bishop in the early 1970s for WFLD, channel 32: the channel that would become the Chicago Fox Television station.

There’s really only one man and one band for us this halloween…

R.I.P Lux – teenage goo goo muck forever…

Tim Burton i Henry Selick van representar de forma perfecte el que és, i significa, la festivitat de Halloween, Dia de Tot Sants a Catalunya, en la seva excel·lent Pesadilla Antes de Navidad, mostrant-la com l’altre cara del Nadal, com la visió canalla i gamberra de la celebració per excel·lència.

Nascuda fa molts segles com a una cel·lebració celta, i sota el nom de Samhain (déu dels morts), coincidia amb el darrer dia de l’any (el 31 d’octubre segons el calendari celta) i representava el final de l’estiu. Aquell dia s’encenien grans fogueres per allunyar els mals esperits, ja que es creia que aquests acompanyats de bruixes visitaven les antigues llars, en busca d’un nou cos. Per aquest motiu no s’encenia cap llum i la gent es vestia de bruixes o dimonis per tal que cap esperit els posseís.

Amb l’arribada de l’era cristiana, el dia 1 de novembre va passar a denominar-se Dia de Tots Sants i el 31 d’octubre Vigília de Tots Sants, en anglès All Saints Eve. Amb el temps aquesta denominació va anar mutant fins anomenar-se, All Hallows Eve. D’aquí va néixer la paraula Halloween.

Amb el temps aquesta celebració ha anat agafant un caràcter més inofensiu i s’ha creat tota una iconografia, al voltant de la carbassa com a element representatiu que s’ha acabat estenent per arreu del món. Ha arribat a ser tota una icona de la cultura popular, influenciant el món de la música (Misfits, White Zombie, Marilyn Manson, The Horrors o The Cramps) i sobretot el món del cinema, i marcant de forma clara el cinema de terror més pulp, un gènere que ha trobat en el Halloween un gran aliat.

Aquí us proposem cinc títols perfectes per qui el dia 31 vulgui tancar-se a casa seva, sense llum i vestit de bruixa o dimoni, i celebrar sol o en companyia aquesta nit tant terrorífica. Getting in the spooky-spirit of Halloween, for the second year in a row, Daryle (A.K.A. DJ D-Mac) mixed a terrifying selection of music from the vinyl he’s collected for years. A Grip of Terror is scary fun. I’m loving The Budos Band’s blaring baritone sax with laughing goblins, and dissonant piano riffs in the background. The Cramps singing “i cut your head off and put it in my tv set,” with music-box sounds is creepy. But wait, then comes some deep dark early nineties dub electronica. You can even hear the genuine crackle of the record going pop-pop-pop. The swirling chaos of funk and vocal chants, and jammy congas and bass-lines are killah. The pinnacle is a little housey club moment from i’m not telling with a theramin in the background then ending with the haunting Tocata in D Minor by Bach.

Ahhhhh, Halloween, such a lovely celebration of all that is goofy and trashy. Devilish and scary, too? Sometimes.  Boozy? Yes, please. But for me, the season is most of all an excuse to play a lot of fun, twisted songs, many of which were recorded decades ago. Below I have listed a few of my favorites.

I host WMSE’s Zero Hour on Tuesday nights/Wednesday mornings from midnight to 3 a.m. Music from independent labels is the focus of the show, and I think I make a reasonable attempt at spanning the genres, with a nod toward spastic. For this week’s pledge drive show, I’m planning on going all-Halloween, so you can hear many of these songs and other demented ditties if you tune in – and why not pledge while you’re there?

“Haunted House,” Johnny Fuller: Recorded by many over the years, including Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs, Hasil Adkins and most recently John Fogerty, Fuller’s original for Specialty Records is the grooviest.

“The Witch,” The Sonics or “She’s My Witch,” Kip Tyler & The Flips:  Depending on whether you want to burn fast or slow, you win either way.

“I Was a Teenage Werewolf,” The Cramps:  Raise a glass of the good stuff to lead singer Lux Interior, who passed away February 4th.

“Halloween,” The Dream Syndicate: Your chance to trick-or-treat in the Paisley Underground. Bring your own jangle.

“Gonna Raise Hell,” Cheap Trick:  Used to hell-raising perfection in the Freaks & Geeks Halloween episode, a seasonal favorite in my household.

“Rockin’ in the Graveyard,” Jackie Morningstar: Issued by the Mobile, Alabama, indie label Sandy Records in April 1959. More fun than a bucket of candy corn.

“Bo Meets the Monster,” Bo Diddley:  When you want to give the very best, give Bo.

“Trick or Treat,” Otis Redding:  The Big O is going for Halloween as the man wise to your little games, honey.

El termino Burlesque se refiere a espectáculos teatrales, que suelen consistir en historietas de parodia. Si bien algunos autores afirman que burlesque es un descendiente directo de la Comedia del arte, el término ‘burlesque’ para una parodia o la comedia de costumbres aparece casi al mismo tiempo que la primera aparición de la commedia dell’arte.

Surgida en el siglo XIX, del music hall y de espectáculos de vodevil (vaudeville), en los comienzos del siglo XX surge el burlesco populista como una mezcla de sátira, performance, y entretenimiento para adultos.

El Nuevo Burlesque ha adoptado muchas formas, pero todas tienen el rasgo común de honrar a uno o más encarnaciones anteriores del género, incluidos strippers, trajes caros… Hay modernos artistas burlesque y espectáculos en todo el mundo, así como convenciones anuales.

El burlesque en esencia es sexual y no sexista: es la representación absoluta
del poderío de la carne femenina. En el burlesque reside la raíz del modelo de sensualidad femenina, en positivo y en negativo, que el cine se encargaría de construir y fijar , si la vertiente recatada eran las Ziegfeld Follies, la perversa era la femme fatale, cuya representación se reelaboraría mucho, desde Mae West en los 30 a Jane Mansfield en los 50, pasando por Betty Boo.
Pero a parte de estas aportaciones, el burlesque como espectáculo no encontraría su acomodo en Hollywood ni en los grandes estudios. Era demasiado vicioso.

En los 50, el burlesque viviria una nueva mutación en su representación de la mano de Bettie Page saltó a la palestra primero como pin-up y después como burlesque performer. Así que Bettie es ya una modelo renombrada cuando conoce en 1951 a los hermanos Irving y Paula Klaw, director de cine y fotógrafa.
Con ellos realiza una serie de sesiones fotográficas de bondage y spanking un subgénero del universo burlesque que no era precisamente el que más brillo daría a
la exitosa carrera de Bettie. Sin embargo, estas fotografías junto con los altísimos tacones de aguja y el flequillo corto y negro conformarían las nuevas señas de identidad de la celebración de la sexualidad femenina. Bettie devendría un icono que inauguraría el burlesque contemporáneo.

Bettie asomaría en el cine primeramente en los cortos ‘Bettie and her high heel shoes’ y ‘Bettie gets bound and kidnapped’ destinados a la venta por correo. Tras ellos, Klaw rueda los largometrajes ‘Strip-O-Rama’ (junto a Lily St. Cyr), ‘Varietease’ y ‘Teaserama’ (con Tempest Storm).

Como en los films burlesque de los 40, se respeta el set teatral y la estructura en base a episodios, pero las coreografías son mucho más carnales debido a que son filmadas en rabioso Eastman Color.

En 1969, la pornografía dura era asequible y los espectáculos burlesque en vivo reciben menos atención.
El espíritu burlesque se mantiene vivo a través del circuito de cine de serie B,
que bajo la categorización específica de sexplotation ofrece un producto de tono softcore . El striptease y el desnudo se humorizan ahora muchísimo.

A mediados de los 70, ya estamos metidos de lleno en el burlesque contemporáneo estrenado por Bettie Page. Ha sido tal el poder icónico de Bettie que el universo burlesque reposa desde entonces en este referente estético.

Por otro lado, la reivindicación de la contracultura en los 70 hace que el influjo del burlesque se atomice y trascienda los campos en los que había operado hasta ahora (el mundo del espectáculo y el cine). Y será el Rock and roll quien abrace con entusiamo la tradición burlesque .

La pareja Posion Ivy y Lux Interior de su propia banda, The Cramps, entiende el sexo vivo como un acto supremo de liberación de un sistema social al que molesta su exhibición pública. Poison Ivy, además, cumple con empeño y en todos los sentidos las características de una burlesque queen.

Los Cramps son una importante clave en la reivindicación y transmisión del burlesque en la segunda mitad del s.XX. Su construcción estética ceremonió el matrimonio oficial del burlesque con las escenas rockabilly y
psychobilly , tan de moda hoy en dia.

Acualmente podemos encontrarnos con grandes Divas representantes del Burlesque como Dita Von Tesse, de sobra conocida por todos , odia por muchos y admirada por muchos otros..

I keep listening to the song “Lust” By Velvet Acid Christ. I’m alternating it with the Drifters so that I don’t go insane. I have eclectic taste in music, what can I say.

So I tried to go shopping today. I had $60. I didn’t buy anything aside from a milkshake and a metrocard.

Hahahaha. I definitely do not consume 1,800 – 2,000 calories in a day. So I tried on EIGHT THINGS at Buffalo Exchange, stopped at Trash to look at the shoes (I always feel poor and not well endowed when I go in there). Stopped at Gothic Renaissance (I hate that store). I also stopped at Forever 21 (bad music as usual) and The Vampire Freaks store. Oh and Joyce Leslie. Just to look at the undies.

I have come to the conclusion that I suck at shopping, just a little bit.

I’m ultra picky and ultra cheap. Maybe a visit to Williamsburg would be more beneficial but the last time I had enough money to buy clothes I didn’t buy anything. Meh meh meh meh.

Aside from me sucking at shopping I had a really nice day. I walked so much with DesiDesiDesi he’s fun I like him. I also like listening to The Cramps when I get dressed in the morning. I did that today and it made me feel so much better. I listened to “I Wanna Get In Your Pants” and I hit on myself in the mirror.

I’ve been trying to decide on a new piercing, I am CRAVING a new one.

I’ve had quite a few piercings. I gave up trying to list them chronologically, so I’ll just list them.

Eyebrow, Snakebites, Lip piercing (x3 hahaha or something like that), navel, monroe (x2), septum (x2), stretched lobes, standard second earlobe piercing, nostril piercing (x2), etc.

(Most of these are retired, x2 means I repierced it).

The only piercings that I really want right now are the ones my mom DESPISES -

CHEEK PIERCINGS.

DIMPLE PIERCINGS.

I’m ridiculously in love with them, have been for about a year and a half. She’s fine with tattoos but not cheek piercings. I guess I’ll actually have to wait until I’m 18 as to not piss her off completely. Or 17 since I’ll be in college by then.

BRIEF MAKEUP REVIEW.

That’s me wearing my new black lipstick from MAC cosmetics. I don’t care if I look like an awkward tranny here. I don’t have lipstick on my teeth Michael! Anyway, the lipstick is nice and glossy and stays on pretty well, it is prone to bleeding so I need to actually pick up a lip liner. Not for the faint of heart. I wear a couple of layers of it since I want it to be pitch black.
