The Cribs Johnny Marriga on mulle ikka veel harjumatu. On ikka veider kooslus ja korralik eavahe sel suhtel. Aga tundub toimivat. Eks The Cribs pidigi üles kasvama, toda lad-punki oleks naljakas selles eas nii teha. Kahju natuke siiski.

Ma just mõtlesin, et see meenutab mulle midagi. See vanema venna/onu adopteerimine. Meelde tuli!

The Cribs are an English 4-piece indie rock band from Wakefield, West Yorkshire. The band consist of twins Gary and Ryan Jarman and their younger brother Ross Jarman. Recently they have been joined by ex-The Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr who has been made a formal member of the group since 2008. The band, who first became active on the concert circuit in 2002, were initially tied to other like-minded UK bands of that time, most notably The Libertines, by a British music press that were looking for a ‘British rearguard’ to the wave of popular US indie rock bands of the time. In 2008, Q magazine described the band as “The biggest cult band in the UK”.

Recordings
The band have released four albums on the Wichita label – self titled debut The Cribs in 2004, The New Fellas in 2005, Men’s Needs, Women’s Needs, Whatever in 2007 and Ignore The Ignorant in 2009. Known for their staunchly purist approach to recording, the band have often been labeled as ‘Lo-Fi’. Significantly, their debut album was recorded in 7 days at London’s Toe Rag Studio, onto 8-track. Toe Rag Studio is known for its vintage set up which is as authentic to an original 1960s studio as is possible in the modern day. Parts of this record were taken from the original sessions the band recorded with Chicago based avant-garde musician Bobby Conn.

The New Fellas, the band’s second album release, was recorded with Edwyn Collins, the singer/songwriter and guitarist from Glasgow’s influential Orange Juice in London at his own studio. Again, a comparatively unpolished record sonically, as both the producer Collins and the band themselves were achieving sounds similar to those heard on the Orange Juice records. This was, however, the intention and the reason the band and producer were put together.

Men’s Needs, Women’s Needs, Whatever saw the band finally take steps to progress forth from their ‘Lo-Fi’ roots being recorded in Canada with Alex Kapranos of Franz Ferdinand as producer. The album was mixed by Andy Wallace (Nirvana, Foo Fighters). The album was released on 21 May 2007 and was preceded by a single, Men’s Needs, on 7 May, which reached #17.

Currently, the bands last 7 chart-eligible single releases have charted inside the UK Top 40.

Their song “Martell” from The New Fellas release was featured in the Canadian Telus Commercial, a series of commercials known for consistently featuring less mainstream yet iconic music ranging from Daft Punk to Supergrass.

The band appeared on Later with Jools Holland in May 2007, prior to the release of Men’s Needs, Women’s Needs, Whatever, where they played the songs Men’s Needs, Our Bovine Public and I’m a Realist. Men’s Needs is the bands biggest hit to date, reaching number 17 in the UK charts. The track has also picked up many accolades, including being named 3rd best track of 2007 by NME, Track of the Year 2007 by the Metro paper and finishing in the 100 best tracks in Rolling Stone magazine in the USA.[citation needed]

Their song Hey Scenesters! was listed in NME’s “50 Greatest Indie Anthems Of All Time”. The band were one of only a few contemporary bands included in the list.

They appeared on the Late Night with Conan O’Brien on July 18, 2007, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson on 27 July 2007 and The Late Show with David Letterman on 18 March 2008.

Recently, the band were personally invited to support the Sex Pistols at four of their five comeback concerts in Brixton in November. In November 2007, The Cribs were named as the headlining act of the 2008 NME Awards Tour. They were nominated for four NME awards; Best British Band, Best Live Act, Best Track (“Men’s Needs”) and Hero Of The Year (Ryan Jarman), but won none of these awards. In February 2008, they released “I’m A Realist”/”Bastards of Young”, the latter a cover of a song by The Replacements.

The new album was announced in June 2009, the title being “Ignore The Ignorant”, with a release date of 7 September. It will be preceded by first single “Cheat On Me” on 31 August. Two tracks from this album were recorded at The Fly’s In The Courtyard sessions on 14 September 2009.
Live performances
Known for their raucous, unpredictable live shows the band have built-up a fanatical following due to a heavy touring schedule since the release of the first record. Their DIY ethic also led to them touring independently, when they were supposed to be off the road writing. Although this contributed to the bands success, and much larger venues, the band have always claimed to be more at home doing things in that way. On their first tour back after recording the third record in early 2007 the band returned to their roots and held some gigs in very small, intimate venues, including a show in their hometown at the Wakefield Escobar and another at the Brudenell Social Club in Leeds (a venue they used to play at when they first started out). In June, they returned to Leeds at the climax of their full-size UK tour with two consecutive sold out nights at the University Refectory (the first band to do this since Ian Dury and the Blockheads 30 years ago). They subsequently came back and accomplished the same feat in 2008, after the show being presented with an award by the University for being the first band in its history to have ‘2 consecutive years of 2 consecutive nights of sell-out shows at Leeds University Refectory’. In 2007 the band spoke out against the mainstreaming of Indie in the NME.

In November 2007, they were invited by The Sex Pistols to support them for 4 nights at the Brixton Academy to mark the 30th anniversary of their Never Mind The Bollocks album.

In 2008, The Cribs headlined the Radio1/NME stage at the Leeds Festival, and the Reading Festival. The Cribs, along with The Subways are also the only bands in the festivals history to progress through all the festivals stages in consecutive years, Carling Stage (2004), Radio1/NME Stage (2005), Main Stage (2006) – though The Cribs would trump them due to a performance they made on the Comedy Stage in 2002 and a headlining set on the Radio1/NME Stage in 2008.

On 8 December 2008, NME announced that the band would be playing a short UK tour to promote their latest album, due to be recorded shortly after. The tour visits a number of small intimate venues, including The Ritz in Manchester, London’s Heaven, the ABC in Glasgow and St George’s Hall in Bradford.

The band have announced a UK tour to support the new album. It runs from 24 September 2009 to 15 October 2009 and takes in 14 venues. Afterwards, they have dates planned in Japan, New York, Los Angeles, and Europe (supporting Franz Ferdinand in the latter) before another four UK gigs in December. More U.S. dates are pending.

The Cribs are touring in support of their latest album, Ignore The Ignorant. The album is the first with the band’s new recruit, former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr.

The Von Bondies were also on the bill. Both bands put on great performances.

I have all my fruit chopped for breakfast, I’ll have my soup at work for lunch and run around all day shouting at the naughty ones. I might even hit the 10st mark if I really hammer it.

I had The Cribs on repeat all day while cooking. I love love love them! I got into them when I was off sick with the first operation on the womb of doom and I’m still in love with them bigtime. They look like their mum cut their hair for them and they have silly accents. Brilliant. I could listen to Be Safe on repeat until I die. For reals. Tacky video below for anyone so inclined to watch it.

Speaking of *cough* music, Jedward made it through for another week on X-Factor. I never watched the programme before sharing a house with Poppy. I hate everything it stands for. So of course I love Jedward, the twins bringing shame on the entire population of Ireland. They can’t sing, they can’t dance. They do have silly hair and funny accents mind. Am I the only person to see the beauty of this? Simon Cowell’s music machine has hijacked music for this country for years. We don’t even get to have a ‘Christmas Number 1′ anymore because it’s a given that whoever wins the shitfest that is X-Factor will get there with some godawful cover. All the people up in arms about how two talentless twins are stealing the place of someone else with “real talent” need to wise the fuck on up. Do they not get it? People with real talent haven’t been able to break through for years now. Please tell me where that big fatty that won a few years ago is? Or the Justin Timberlake wannabe? Or the countless other clusterfucks that have won? So passionate am I about bringing this sham down, I put a bet on them winning. I don’t give a flying fuck what anyone says, I have faith in the millions of other people equally sick of this shit and I look forward to cashing in the couple of hundred quid I’m due to make.

Scott Thomas (Views Infinitum), a photographer from the lake district of western New York, made an assignment: Water, he wrote, moves, stands still, creates and destroys. Capture it.

Around here, the water has pretty much captured us. It’s our livelihood, our passion, our cradle, our place of rest. And below the surface there are echoes of our history.

“The cribs” are still there offshore. The huge log frames filled with rocks were the foundation for lumbering era docks. They can shelter fish, tear a hole in your boat, tell you a story. Once upon a time, they say, this lake was not a placid resort. Once upon a time this was a hardscrabble frontier that promised opportunity. Wounded veterans of the Civil War came here to make new lives. Enterprising souls came to make their fortunes in the Gilded Age. Then the lumber was all gone, and life moved on. It always does. The water remains. It’s worth remembering that when the water is gone, life on this planet will be gone, too.

So another month has passed us by, and it’s getting darker and colder out there. Let’s have a look at some of the new releases the end of summer ‘09 brought us, shall we?

Girls‘ debut album, Album, was widely talked about – in fact, I only checked out the album because I’d seen their name all over the place – and is, as it turns out, quite good listening. They aren’t doing anything hugely new, but that’s ok sometimes – their brand of fuzzed-over surf-ish California pop is a lot of fun (when it isn’t sounding completely lovelorn, that is). Their sound doesn’t exactly pop, but would make some excellent heartbreak or late-at-night listening. Oh, except for “Big Bad Mean Motherfucker” – that one rocks hard.

Girls – Big Bad Mean Motherfucker

The Cribs‘ Ignore The Ignorant, their fourth album, came out last month as well. Let me start by saying that I was a huge Cribs fan back when their debut came out. I was seriously in love with that album (and still am). I enjoyed the second as well, though maybe not quite as much, but was less impressed with the third. But at least it had some kind of catchy singles. So it pains me to be so bitterly disappointed in this new album. It’s just … boring. Blah. Blerg. I hear Johnny Marr in there and that should be cool, but honestly, I’m not sure what he adds in this context, especially when the songs just aren’t there to begin with. I’m not all that surprised really, what with how Men’s Needs … never fully caught my attention, but this is an even bigger let-down than I’d have thought possible. Bummer.

Before I get to my last album of September, I should mention here that I’m still trying to get my grubby hands on Kid Harpoon’s full-length debut, Once. I’m a huge fan of his First and Second EPs, so I seriously cannot wait to hear this. Mr. Harpoon has tracks streaming on his website, so go have a listen here. It sounds fantastic, doesn’t it?

My favorite – by so far I can’t even see the others in the distance – is, without a doubt, Monsters of Folk by the folk-supergroup of the same name. Oh my, this album is a serious winner – each song definitely sounds like the member it was written by, and each of their voices are as distinctive as ever, but this never feels like a compilation of Conor Oberst, Jim James (or, inexplicably, Yim Yames), M. Ward, and Mike Mogis songs. Their styles and voices blend so beautifully, so smoothly, it feels like this foursome always existed as one. It’s so hard to pick a single stand-out track – is it the Marvin Gaye-meets-folk “Dear God (sincerely M.O.F.)”, or the old-timey country-gospel ditty “Goodway”? I’ll go with the cowboy-tinged “Man Named Truth” for the moment, but I have a feeling it’ll change constantly as I keep listening to this wonderful album.

Monsters Of Folk – Man Named Truth

And now it’s time to look at our favorite singles. Some months I choose certain singles because they’re not great but not bad either, so to give the band the benefit of the doubt I include them in the Merry Merry list. This time, however, I didn’t have to use any filler songs! It doesn’t happen very often so I’m really excited about September’s releases. I am smitten with every single one of these singles.

Mumford And Sons – Little Lion Man

This is a sweeping bit of stomping folk. It starts off simple and urgent, but by the chorus you’re swept away by beautiful layers of fiddles and voices and a banjo, I think.

Girls – Lust For Life

The song and the video are both so very adorable. It’s upbeat and melancholy and over way, way too fast.

Fanfarlo – The Walls Are Coming Down

The second single of their debut album is a wonderfully warm song. Fanfarlo is an amazing multi-instrumental band and has a beautiful, rich sound that has one leg in tradition and one leg in a mystery bucket of beauty. Yeah, I suck at telling you what they sound like but don’t let that stop you checking them out. They’ve been compared to Arcade Fire and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah but try to clean your musical palate before you listen to this band. Their music is strong enough to stand on its own without the heavy shadows of other great Indie bands luring over them.

Beth Jeans Houghton – I Will Return

This song is lovely – a melodic pop song with a bluegrass ‘tude. Her enchanting voice transports me to a soft summer day in a beautiful field, which is hard to do because it’s fricking freezing today.

The Asteroids Galaxy Tour – The Golden Age

Her voice is so bizarre but cute. For some reason the music reminds me of a trippy yet slick nineties commercial and I love it. This song also makes me wish for carefree picnics in a park – Sigh, I might just be projecting my sadness for the demise of summer on these songs…

The Drums – Let’s Go Surfing

With this strange song The Drums rediscover the surfing theme without revisiting The Thrills. It vaguely echoes and pays homage to California surf pop, but with a wonderfully intricate contemporary feel. There’s also handclaps and whistling, I swear it’s like Bean dreamed up this band.

The Dodos – Fables

I mean it’s The Dodos. They rock. I was gonna leave it at that, but all the other ones got a wee descirption so it just wouldn’t be fair. “Fables” from their third album is catchy and swinging and a fun and flighty introduction to their fantastic new album. It’s almost poppy but with tremendous substance and depth.

Metronomy – Not Made For Love

A gentle number about lost love with electronic bleeps and a sad, sad voice. It’s sparse compared to the other singles in this list, but conveys as much, if not more emotion with so little.
