The Ex-Girlfriends Club are excited to be headlining a Love Revolution Event on 11/24/09 at Rotture with 1776, Orca Team, Cold Metal, Hawkeye, Pink Snowflakes and a very special solo show by Zia McCabe of the Dandy Warhols.  This party is a benefit for The Italian Utopia project and will include portrait painters, psychics, massages and more.    The stages at both Branx and Rotture will be featuring bands including Birdstrike, Greenladies, BLOOD, The Skinnyz and Children’s Museum.  The Ex-Girlfriends Club will be playing upstairs at Rotture at 11:30pm.  Bring the love and we’ll provide the utopia.

Well Iowa city, I have about three Radioloveless shows left before I leave the KRUI airways for good. Two shows will consist of my favorite tracks to hear, thus the title of my post. If you listen to the show, I’m sure you’ve heard most of them. Either way, the next two shows will be filled with my favorites. _So last week The Digital Scene turned 2. We are now in the terrible twos, and to kick it off, The Sexretary and I spent the week celebrating. Yes, for a whole week, culminating in a very sloppy Halloween.

_And now that we’ve recovered (for the most part), it’s back to our regularly scheduled programming.

_So today on Mixtape Mondays, it’s time we talk about something that we have come to know a great deal about over the past week: hangovers.

_That’s right. There’s nothing worse than waking up with that head-crushing, stomach-churning, “I’m never drinking again” feeling after a wonderful night. So even though it hurts to hear loud noises when you’re hanging like a demon, we here at The Scene have put together a few songs that will sum up your hangover experiences.

_The Morning After Playlist
_ _Alkaline Trio – “Crawl” This song is perfect for those days that you wake up and, as the lyrics say “zero in on medicine.” Perfect for those days where it hurts to even open your eyes.
_ _Dave Matthews Band – “Grace Is Gone” Sure it’s a bit old, but this song is perfect for those lucky days when you wake still a little loopy from the night before and can grab a drink to take the edge off before pounding the water and coffee.
_ _The Dandy Warhols – “Sleep” This one goes out to everyone that has ever had to work early in the morning with a hangover and spends the entire day thinking “oh I could sleep forever.”
_ _Kings of Leon – “Use Somebody” A perfect, mellow, non-abrasive, but awesome and cute song to play with your significant other while on the way to get breakfast when you wake up at two in the afternoon, both still half comatose from the night before.

Segurament els germans Gallagher matarien per firmar un tema com Two of a Kind, o Courtney Taylor i els seus The Dandy Warhols vendrien la seva ànima al diable per tenir una cançó com Journeyman. Els creadors d’aquetes dues joies pop són quatre australians que responen al nom de The Lovetones i que acaben d’editar el seu quart treball, Dimensions. Amics d’ Anton Newcombe, el líder/gurú dels The Brian Jonestown Massacre, qui col·labora en el disc, aquest australians van néixer al 2002, obrint els concerts de Mosrrissey per Austràlia, i han editat un bon grapat de singles i tres albums plens de bones maneres. Però és en aquest nou treball on les composicions del grup han adquirit majors magnituds. Yo la Tengo has a new album out called Popular Songs. I featured a track on last weeks show. I sat down this last week and listened to the album and there are some truly beautiful unique tracks on it. I’m going to feature a couple of the tracks tonight from the album on Radioloveless. I love their sweet lyrics along with their complex juxtaposition of sound in a handful of the tracks.

Both Stereogum and Pitchfork commented today on Animal Collective’s latest plans, namely a random, coverless album that’s cropped up on Amazon.com. It’s called Fall Be Kind and is available for pre-order for a mere $11.83. Currently that’s all that anyone knows about the release. Stereogum also premiered a new Ida Maria video today. Ida Maria re-released her song “Oh My God” from the album Fortress Round My Heart, this time with vocals from the legendary Iggy Pop. Stereogum took issue with Iggy Pop’s baritone vocals supporting acts like Jemina Pearl, Danger Mouse, Sparklehorse and The BPA, not to mention on his own jazzy releases. Brooklyn’s own Viva Radio has announced the release of a compilation including the likes of The Dandy Warhols, Jay Reatard,The Fiery Furnaces, Growing, Amazing Baby, and Sebastien Tellier, reports Filter. Entitled The Best of Me + You Vol. 1, the album was recorded between 2007 and 2009 in their Brooklyn studios and will include interviews and songs from some of the station’s guests. To make the offer even more enticing, the disc is available for purchase along with a limited edition Me + You t-shirt. We’re sold!

Filter also reports that Berkeley-based indie rockers the Morning Benders will play several shows with Grizzly Bear and Girls during their Fall tour. The Benders hooked up with Grizzly Bear on the production of their latest album, Big Echo, which was  co-producer by Grizzly Bear’s Chris Taylor. Available for free, for one week only, thanks to pitchfork.com, is the engrossing 2004 documentary Dig!, a raucous insight into the egotistical, self-aggrandising, yet ultimately spell-binding profiles of The Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Dandy Warhols. Filmmaker Ondi Timoner collated almost seven years worth of material, stretched across both bands, charting the simultaneous rise of the Dandys and the dramatic self-destruction of the BJM, as both endeavoured, with drastically differing success, to revolutionise the money-manacled, market-driven music industry.

At its core, Dig! parallels the careers of the bands front men, the scuppered genius of the BJM’s Anton Newcombe, and Courtney Taylor-Taylor, the Dandys self-obsessed, image-conscious talisman. Beginning their respective careers as friends and peers, both seem seduced by the others charms, yet obsessed by the success of each others band. As the Dandys take off, Newcombe appears begrudgingly jealous of Taylor-Taylor’s exposure, whilst Taylor-Taylor remains constantly in awe of Newcombe’s boundless and effortless creativity. As the Dandys tour Europe, playing to thousands of expectant fans, the BJM scuttle across America in a battered van, performing for mere tens of bemused, beer-drenched barflys.

Yet, it is Newcombe who is the pivotal anti-hero throughout. An unashamedly, devastatingly talented musician, he is as equally obnoxious as he is compelling. A rampant heroin addiction overshadows his intense charisma. His self-prophesising selfishness outweighs his musical prolificacy. Whether he be attacking his band mates on stage or fighting his girlfriend at home, Newcombe seems hell-bent on destroying not only his bands chances at stardom, but his personal relationships too. It is a touching portrayal of a man so consumed in his own warped rock n’ roll cliché that his talent is kept at arms length from mass circulation.

At once engaging, funny and traumatic, Dig! is a must-see for any aspiring musicians looking to break into the industry, but wanting to also keep their musical morals intact. If you don’t catch Dig! at pitchfork.com this week, be sure to unearth this buried treasure in the very near future.

Hard to believe that it’s been almost 6 years since DiG! burst onto the scene at Sundance, winning the Documentary Grand Jury Prize in January of 2004.

Yes it’s another late night with no sleep.  Actually I fell asleep at 9 pm and woke up at 2am after having a dream about Mariam,  posted my thoughts then I was doing research on Dragon Boat Races , looking for pictures and I gave up after an hour can’t find a decent pic to post.

Neon Indian- Terminally Chill

I’ve heard this and “Deadbeat Summer” almost everywhere this summer, from clubs, to random parties, to one random night on the radio, and it’s not hard to see why. Neon Indian is the perfect background music for whatever summer escapades you find yourself up to, whether it be sharing a cigarette on a porch, drinking a beer by the lake, or building up a sweat on the dance floor of some cramped bar, this is a worthy soundtrack.

New Tales to Tell: A Tribute to Love and Rockets

Though I might be loathe to write a review about a freaking tribute record, which is often more or less a “best of” album sung by people who have no business doing so, New Tales to Tell: A Tribute to Love and Rockets is pretty damn cool. In some circles it might do you a service to be able to list off which Love and Rockets tunes to think are best, but let’s be honest, no one really obsesses over them. We recognize a song here and there, but the fact of the matter is we are far more likely to say, “Oh that’s who sings this song, I never knew.” They are like The The; a perfectly lovable band that music geeks know just to know, but are otherwise not excited…and I love The The.

The beauty of this tribute album is that the 99% of Love and Rockets songs you don’t know are given life by a myriad of artists who, while not necessarily improving on the original, have the sensibility to make the song relevant in context to modern music. It is not as if they are reissuing a stale post-goth, post punk Brit rock sludge, no this is a project of a different order. It is the reimagining of a body of work that has certainly thrived below the surface in the minds of many musicians, but has never really maintained itself in pop culture or geeky conversation. At best this release will reacquaint music consumers with a great band, at worst it will merely be a blip in a music world that has turned to simmer. Good music and those that produce it have after all become so ephemeral.

For those of you who don’t know Love and Rockets, here is a brief biography. Former members of Goth icons Bauhaus formed Love and Rockets named after a comic of the same name in 1985, releasing three records in three years (’85-’87), another in ’89, and far fewer records release periodically in the ‘90s. The band called it quits in 1999, only to do what every other 80s band has done, reunite for Coachella and Lollapalooza in 2008! Their best known song is So Alive which hit #3 on Billboard and #1 on Modern Rock Tracks. They are, as you probably guessed, from England.

Highlights of the albums are Snowden’s No Words No More, Lossy Coils’ and Ian Moore’s Sweet F.A., A Place to Bury Strangers’ The Light, Film School’s An American Dream, War Tapes’ Love Me, Pucifer’s Holiday on the Moon, Black Francis’ All in My Mind. Other artists that contribute include The Stone Foxes, Frankenstein 3000, Blaqk Audio, Dubfire, The Dandy Warhols, The Flaming Lips, Sweethead, Monster Magnet, VEX, Chantal Claret, and Better than Ezra, who scored the task of performing So Alive, but who also unfortunately decided just to blandly reproduce the original. Typically one shouldn’t try and fix something that isn’t busted. However, there is nothing wrong with reinvoking what has been forgotten using a modern medium and a modern voice.

I’m down 1.4 lbs this week.  Given the so-so eating I indulged in last week, I’ll take it!

Healthy Choice Steamers are awesome!  I ate the beef one with potatoes and green beans and was pretty stoked.  There isn’t very much variety on frozen meals here, unlike the USA.  You basically have a dozen varieties of Lean Cuisine and six or seven choices for Smart Ones and that’s it. 

I like frozen meals for lunch (even though they’re full of sodium) because they’re easy.  It’s not much more complicated than that.  Sometimes I try to bring leftovers, but I usually prepare meals that yield one serving so….there’s not much left over from my dinners.

Alas, I only bought one of these new frozen entrees because I was afraid they were going to be gross.  When I realized how good they were, I went back to stock up and Sobey’s was sold out!  None of the other grocery stores have gotten wise and started carrying them yet!

I need a plan….

This is not a post about sparrows, but about the fact that I’ll be up and at ‘em hours before they’ve even thought about dragging themselves up off the perch. I’m only employed three days a week at the moment, but I’ve been picking up quite a lot of relief teaching on my days off (ha!) and tomorrow I get to go to on an excursion down to the big smoke. It’ll be a great day but it comes at a cost unfortunately – a cost to my beauty sleep. I’ll be up at sparrows, around 5.30am, stumbling to the bathroom and searching for my face – think of me, won’t you?
