Como todos ya sabran una de las peliculas más fresa esperada por las adolescentes (y algunos ) es sin duda “New Moon” (luna nueva), y es por esto que en su primera noche en los cines ya es todo un récord en ventas.

La pelicula tiene un récord en opening (de jueves en la noche a viernes en la mañana) de 26.27 millones de dólares!!! 3.514 cines.

Para que tengan una idea de su gran recaudación, Batman “the dark night” la cual fue todo un exito en taquillas en el 2008 recaudo unos 18.4 millones en su opening.

“What has happened Hollywood?” has been the question on every true movie-lover’s lips over the past three or four years. Hit film-makers such as Steven Spielberg and Michael Bay have seemingly ditched their originality by the roadside and instead jumped on a gravy train of remakes, prequels, sequels, movies based on toys, movies based on video games, movies based on comics, and whatever else that can be coupled on to this never-ending freighter.

You only have to look at movies made 50 years ago to know Hollywood has always created remakes, although in the past they were notably subtler. You may have seen five or six remakes a year, but that was it – you knew other than this, you would undoubtedly be treated to a thick slice of originality pie.

As per usual, the transformation to this galaxy of remakes probably started with money – which as they say, is the root of all evil.

For an early example of this, we must travel back in time to 1953, when a young man decided to write and publish his first book, based on his espionage experiences in World War II.

Subsequently, Ian Fleming had a number of his James Bond books made into movies, along with children’s classic Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. As time went on, film adaptations became prominent, with another notable milestone being when the vigilante caped crusader Batman was reinvented for the big screen by cult director Tim Burton.

Created by DC Comics, the first in the long-running franchise was shown to audiences worldwide in 1989 and grossed well over £200 million at the box office. The surprise hit of Batman left nice, fat grins on the faces of producers everywhere who realised that they could capitalise on the film’s success.

Boardrooms everywhere were fuelled with ideas of projecting superheros from their youth on to the silver screen. Since then we’ve witnessed a slew of superheros make the leap from printed page to cinema, from the popular X-Men franchise to the less-celebrated likes of Daredevil and Ghostrider.

Ten years ago, it wasn’t so bad. Even five years ago, originality still had its feet firmly in the door, not allowing itself to be shut-out.

But now, it is definitely too late. There are an exceptional few who do keep their creative minds intact, but it’s not enough to stop the hoard of remakes coming through.

It will be interesting to watch the Oscars next year, especially films within categories such as Original Screenplay, because it’s likely that we will have never heard of them and/or they were made on a miniscule budget, considering the distinct lack of talent on show in Hollywood’s big-hitters.

Tellingly, the great novelist Herman Melville once said: “It is better to fail in originality then to succeed in imitation.” Perhaps this is more relevant than ever.

Hoy vi, creo que por quinta vez, la película de ” El caballero de la noche”, un filme realmente espectacular, mas no por su protagonista, sino por el inigualable villano que se lleva el reconocimiento de mucha gente como el mejor papel antagónico de esta saga de películas en todas sus generaciones.

Interpretado por Heath Andrew Ledger, el personaje de “Joker” que aparece en esta película, debo confesar, me fascina..  Simplemente me encanta. La psicología del personaje que Heath logró con su actuación tiene una fuerza inigualable y apasionante.

A decir verdad, no sé qué es lo que me atrae tanto de este personaje, si su locura inteligente o esa libertad sarcástica que demuestra un control perfecto en sus actos.  Y aunque esa locura le lleva a realizar un terrorismo puro, a final de cuentas no tiene un objetivo material. Uno de sus ideales es demostrar que hasta la persona más “buena” puede ser igualmente “mala o terrorista”.

Se considera un creador del caos y cree que la mejor opción es que haya anarquía tanto en su mundo como en el mundo de los demás. Ideales que marcan su camino y le indican la dirección a seguir.

Un personaje con gran fuerza y poder.

En este sentido, me fascina también que el personaje sabe exactamente qué es lo que quiere lograr y no le importa lo que haya que hacer o hasta donde puede llegar siempre que consiga su objetivo.  Él mismo se apasiona en lo que hace, expresando todo aquello que mueve su mundo. No se queda callado, al contrario tiene la última palabra y, además, demuestra todo su poder con sus movimientos y en sus actos.

Además tiene una mirada super profunda y cautivadora. Así mismo, tiene una especie de humor negro, pero delicado y puro.  Incluso muestra sufrimiento y compasión ante situaciones miserables.  Pero también se ríe y disfruta tofo lo que hace.

Lo que mas me gusta es que el personaje no tiene miedo a nada, ni siquiera al dolor o a la muerte, y eso es lo que le da su mayor fuerza y atractivo.

Finalmente creo que su locura no tiene un motivo, como pareciera demostrar durante la película, él simplemente es un agente creador del caos que disfruta cada una de las cosas que hace, como quienes disfrutamos la scosas que hacemos en nuestra vida.

La diferencia es que él lo que quiere es probar que no hay una persona totalmente buena o mala. Y tiene razon, todos tenemos nuestro lado bueno y nuestro lado malo, todos tenemos esa dualidad dentro de cada uno. Y eso él lo entiende muy bien y quiere que lo entendamos igual.

Entonces…  Why so serious?  Sonrian a la vida como el Joker sonríe a sus ideales. Disfruten lo que hagan y encuentren la pasión en su vida.  También podemos aprender de un villano.  Tú que opinas?

So today was the second time I’ve seen the movie, The Dark Night…

And for the second time, I wasn’t really impressed. It wasn’t the same thing as my experience with the Matrix where people hyped it up too much and my expectations were too high…because I saw it opening night :p So I was the one telling people about it. :p

The quality of the movie was excellent…and acting was exceptional.

However, it was way too dark and hopeless. The movie seemed to portray that the only reason to reject evil is to hold onto this concept of “good” and “hope”…but in the end, evil was so powerful and so permeating that the only was to give “hope” was to lie; to give a false sense that good is still present and that it resides somewhere in men, or in this case, a man.

I cannot fight without hope. I will not fight if there is no chance of victory.

I fight not because there is some concept of this illusion called good. I will not fight because I think that I can out smart, or muscle my way against evil. I do not have the strength to fight against evil. (This was accurately portrayed in the movie).

God has given me the power to conquer…no, to be more than a conquerer. Jesus gives me the strength to fight, and the Holy Spirit gives me the power (a power outside of myself which is more powerful than the prince of this world).

The only redeeming value I saw in the movie was this: sacrificial love. Bruce Wayne as Batman wanted to unmask and unveil Batman in order to save lives. Bruce Wayne decided to give Batman a bad name in order to preserve the idea, the hope that there is incorruptible good in the world.

So yeah…my thoughts :p

The Fourth of July is more or less the halfway point of summer, meaning we’re virtually halfway through the biggest movie season of the year. And yet for a while now we’re been just trying to stay awake. Far from anything really memorable, summer 2009 will likely go in the books as more memorable for what it wasn’t than what it ever was. Films are making money, by and large: Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen had its 200 million dollar opening week, putting it on a fast track to top the summer’s current money maker Star Trek. But there’s no surprise, crossing-demographic runaway blockbuster this year, compared to 2008’s The Dark Knight or even Iron Man. The big summer movies, immediately recognizable as such, are marching through the theatres with dreary precision, one giving way to another like multimillion dollar dominoes.

Still, movie news keeps accumulating. The following list includes some observations, ideas, and occasional snarky remarks we’ve compiled while working on longer pieces. All the opinions are just our own, of course.

1. Is the lowest common denominator approach that’s been stifling the selection of available Blu-Ray format titles finally beginning to thaw? Recent weeks saw such classics as The Seventh Seal, Dr. Strangelove, and Last Year at Marienbad making their debut on the high-def medium, classing up shelves usually dominated by much lower brow fare. Fans of foreign cinema will be glad to know that Akira Kurosawa’s Kagemusha makes its Blu-Ray debut August 18, while Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing debuts just this week. We imagine Sal’s Pizzeria looks great in high definition.

We expect lots of this.

2. Meanwhile, the Lord of the Rings trilogy seems to be inching closer to a release of its own, according to this report, even though a release of the films’ straight-to-DVD expanded versions will wait until the 2011 premiere of The Hobbit. The three films collectively made just shy of three trillion dollars in worldwide box office receipts, so why Warner Brothers would drag heels on releasing a full edition in the meantime is anyone’s guess. Maybe they’re as pessimistic about Hobbit co-director Guillermo Del Toro’s vision for the LOTR prequel as we are?

3. In a summer with no surprise hit (yet), what about the bombs? So far Terminator: Salvation, Angels & Demons, Land of the Lost, and The Taking of Pelham 123 have all fallen short of expectations, while the mid-range budgeted Year One also seems destined not to recoup its money. Poor word of mouth hurt Terminator, and Pelham 123 likely should have come out later in the year, when more adults frequent multiplexes. As for Land of the Lost, Angels & Demons and Year One, we’re blaming audience shtick fatigue in all cases. We’ll tempt fate here and predict that Bruno also disappoints: previews make it out to be nothing more than Gay Borat, and audiences may take a “been there, done that” attitude as a result.

4. If Universal pushes Public Enemies any harder they’re going to risk a groin injury. The seemingly relentless advertising campaign, already somewhat misleading in depicting Michael Mann’s reported character study as an action-adventure romp, has commercials all over television, mostly featuring Johnny Depp’s good looks. We expect very good things from the film, but if early audiences feel baited and switched the film could likely join the crowd of turkeys mentioned above. It’s also not a good sign that all the rave critical comments used in the TV ads are from Rolling Stone’s Peter Travers, who’s essentially the go-to guy for movie critic testimonials.

5. DirecTV deserves some applause for bringing two of HBO’s most acclaimed dramas that aren’t The Sopranos to a wider audience. Last month the satellite provider began airing reruns of Deadwood and Barry Levinson’s landmark 90s-era prison drama Oz on its The 101 channel, presenting them uncut and without commercials. Coupled with its resurrection of worthy but prematurely cancelled network dramas Smith and The Nine, the all but unknown The 101 offers better summer programming than the major networks.

6. The rumors about fired directors and other postproduction crises surrounding G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra only throw fuel on a bonfire of backlash for a film that’s due to premiere for another five weeks yet. Part of the cynicism, and a big chunk of the problem, is that the creators have violated a lesson that Hollywood seems to finally have learned about adapting comic books: don’t screw with what endeared the subject matter to audiences in the first place. Past superficial costuming similarities in some of the characters, the film bears little resemblance to the 80s cartoon and toy line, trading loyalty to that nostalgia for some generic looking Michael Bay-style histrionics. The producers should know better. And knowing is half the battle.

7. Continuing his long odyssey through the entirety of genre flick purgatory, Nicolas Cage will appear next March in Swordfish director Dominic Sena’s sword and sorcery horror adventure Season of the Witch. Cage plays a knight transporting a witch to a group of priests who will determine if she started the Black Plague. Ron Perlman (Sons of Anarchy) and British actress Claire Foy (Little Dorritt) co-star. Hard to believe Cage was once considered one of America’s most potent leading men, with versatile turns in Leaving Las Vegas and Red Rock West. But, films like this, Knowing and Bangkok Dangerous must be making money somewhere, because they keep getting made.

8. Finally, Ang Lee returns to theatres with August’s Taking Woodstock, a based-on-true story about the small Upstate New York town that more or less played host to the Woodstock music festival (the original one in 1969, not the corporate crap in the 90s.) Though comedy is probably no one’s first thought when discussing the meticulous Lee (Brokeback Mountain, The Ice Storm) the unpretentious feel and goofy spirit in the trailer below looks all kinds of promising. The broad ensemble cast includes Eugene Levy, Emile Hirsch, Zoe Kazan, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Paul Dano. It also stars Liev Shreiber as a gun-toting transvestite, which we hope was actually a common sight at the over-revered music concert.

I say I did pretty good. And I did get around to seeing most of the movies! All of the best pictures were spectacular this year!

Not that he’d exactly been holding back at the Golden Globes and the BAFTAs, but the 56-year-old comeback kid outdid himself Saturday while accepting the trophy for Best Male Lead at the 2009 Film Independent’s Spirit Awards, where his star vehicle, The Wrestler, won a leading three honors, including Best Feature and Best Cinematography.
