BIGG UP TO THE FUNK.

In der ersten Stunde stelle ich euch zwei neue großartige Soul-LPs vor: Das Debut von Naomi Shelton & The Gospel Queens ist purer Gospel-Soul, der mit schlichter Deepness besticht. Keine Musik die trendy oder hip ist, sondern einfach nur gut.
Lee Fields ist ein alter bekannter im Funk und Soul – Business. Kommerzieller Erfolg war ihm bislang nicht vergönnt. Trotzdem macht er weiterhin erstklassige Platten. Seine neue LP “My World” ist wieder mal ein richtig schönes Soul-Album. Superb!
In der zweiten Stunde gibt es dann einen Mix mit aktuellen Soul und Regggae-45ern, neue Aufnahmen und Re-Issues.

Vaste prik op maandagavond: Zweedse muziekblogs lezen met behulp van Google Translate. Ik kan er ook niet aan doen dat die Zweden superieure pop maken. Er moet iets in hun rode bessensaus zitten. Toen ik de wekelijkse lijst van deze site doorploegde stootte ik op de website van The Dynamics. Dat is een duo uit Jönköping dat met het hoofd in de jaren tachtig is blijven steken. Digfi omschrijft de muziek als “Felt met Andrew Eldritch op zang”. Spot on. De twee korte songs die The Dynamics dit jaar op de wereld losliet zijn gratis te downloaden vanop de homepage van de band. Klik verder en je krijgt er alle eerder uitgebrachte nummers bovenop. Erg productief lijken ze niet. Maar het materiaal is wél van zeer hoog niveau. Verk(n)ocht.

Many of us have heard the story about how Hollywood screen legend Charlie Chaplin once entered a look-alike contest and lost.  The unbelievable happening took place in a San Francisco theatre where contestants in the competition were not only expected to look like The Tramp himself but were expected to act like him as well.  Remarkably Mr. Chaplin even “failed to make the finals.”Now it’s quite understandable that the judges and organizers never in a million years would’ve expected that the original Chaplin himself would secretly enter their contest, but it’s still hard to believe that an impersonator could win first place in such a contest.

That all took place over 90 years ago but not much has changed.   Often times we prefer the copy to the original, especially when it comes to music.  Songs get covered over and over and over again, but are some cover songs better than their originals?  I suppose that’s up for debate.  Here are my picks for covers that outshine their originals or come pretty darn close.
Song: 7 Nation Army
Original artist: The White Stripes
Covered by: Many, but Nostalgia 77 and The Dynamics do it best.
Conclusion:  These covers comes pretty close, but Jack and Meg’s version still tops my list.

Song:  Hallelujah
Original artist: Leonard Cohen
Covered by:  Many, (an estimated 170 artists to date) but most notably Jeff Buckley.

Conclusion:  Buckley’s version is magical and his voice gives me goose bumps, but this version by Norwegian singers Espen Lind, Askil Holm, Alejandro Fuentes and Kurt Nilsen is a strong contender for king of the Hallelujah covers.

Song:  Mad World
Original artist: Tears for Fears
Covered by: Gary Jules

Conclusion:  Gary Jules’ version of Mad World is far superior to the Tears for Fears version.  Don’t get me wrong, I loved Tears for Fears back in the day but Jules’ really gets it right with his sombre take on the tune.   (Plus it’s from one of my favourite movies ever, Donnie Darko.)

Conclusion:  Just because the Lennon and McCartney wrote and recorded it doesn’t make their version the best.  Everybody knows that Joe Cocker’s version kicks Beatles butt.  Nothing more to say.

Covered by: Mark Ronson featuring Amy Winehouse

Conclusion:  Actually my jury is out on this one, I really like both versions.   This song in The Zutons’ bluesy pop style grew on me pretty quickly but I also love Ronson’s Motown inspired interpretation.   Looks like I’m going to have to call this one a draw.

Enda en post knyttet til Jack White, men denne gangen covers av The White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army.” Og i dag tar jeg den helt ut, med sju, selvsagt, versjoner – fare for overkill.

Her er Nostalgia 77, men en lo-fi, soul-funk versjon; Alice Russell på vokal, og det er et riktig tøft arrangement.

Og her er Alice Russell en gang til, live denne gangen. Og her må jeg nok innrømme at det er fiolinen jeg synes er mest interessant.

Så, Living Colour (og live er de et riktig interessant coverband; som “Back in Black” og “Should I Stay or Should I Go”; sjekk mer på youtube)

Her er Flaming Lips live, og alle som synger gjennom megafon er verd å lytte til spør dere meg. (Man kan ellers høre Flaming Lips og The White Stripes sammen her).

The Dynamics spiller “Seven Nation Army” mer i retning av reggae, men også med funk- og dub-elementer.

Mens AFRA & INCREDIBLE BEATBOX BAND har vokal alene, inkludert, selvsagt, beatboxing (vel, det lyder som om de har litt regulært perkusjon også inni mixen her).

Here is an artist that I’m surprised at how few covers I have come across of her music. Despite being one of the most influential female musicians of the past 25 years, I have found only one existing cover of her music on my iTunes, and when searching HypeMachine, I found relatively little as well. She is one of the most prolific artists of our generation, producing great music in three consecutive decades. Who is this I speak of…?

None other than Lady Madonna. Having wanted to “cover” her since the first time I saw her, I thought she would be a fun artist to have today. Enjoy a couple covers below.

today was the first day of school! i’m really looking forward to it this quarter. one of my profs is a guy i had my first quarter freshman year. and on the first day of class i came into his lit class, sat down and thought “yes- college WAS the right decision!”

and today in his class, i felt that way again! he’s just super lax and very smart. he has a very reassuring tone and reminds me of everything that is awesome about lit classes. so, yay! plus, it’s a linguistics class, so we get to do hillarious/funny things like the phonetic alphabet. which i thought was silly when i first learned it from a puttering man who even made birkenstocks look sad, but actually kind of love.

also, i listened to music for multiple hours today to get ready for radio. and i am going in early tomorrow. i am so in love with new music. recommendations are the terrordactyls, port harbor, the pieces of peace and the dynamics. YES.

Oh man. Wo ist die Zielgruppe? Wer braucht das?

Wovon ich rede? Von einem Reggae-Album voller Coverversionen: 7 Nation Army (The White Stripes), Rockit (Herbie Hancock), Lay Lady Lay (Bob Dylan), Music (Madonna), Whole Lotta Love (Led Zeppelin), … Mancher wird beim ersten Aufzählungspunkt vom Glauben abfallen, aber spätestens bei Led Zeppelin dürfte es jeden erwischt haben.

All die Zweifler seien beruhigt, die fünf zur Zeit alle in Frankreich wohnhaften Dynamics machen ihre Sache schon ganz gut. Jedem der Tracks merkt man die tiefe Ehrerbietung der Band für a) den klassischen Soul, b) Roots-Reggae und c) jeden einzelnen Song an. Und doch – oder vielleicht gerade deshalb – glänzt dieses Album vor allem in seiner … zweifelhaften Existenz. Es mag sein, die Band verdient ihren – von der internationalen Promotion herbei geschriebenen – Ruf als erstklassiger Live-Act, auf Platte jedoch fehlt die Frische, der Esprit, das nötige Etwas. Das ist einfach nur glatt produzierter, fehlerfreier Reggae, der die bekannten Stilmittel nutzt, sie auf ebenso oft gehörte Songs anwendet und hofft, damit etwas Neues und Begeisterndes zu schaffen.

Am Ende des Tages ist das alles nicht schlecht, nein, eigentlich sogar ganz gut. Aber gut auf die Weise, wie auch die millionste Garagerock- oder Postpunk-Revival-Band aus dem UK gut ist. Es ist gut … und langweilig. Sage ich. Wer auf Reggae und Soul steht, über die Produktion und all das Altbekannte hinweg sehen kann, wer also die tiefe Emotion, die in Reggae und Soul beheimatet ist, herausfiltert, wem vielleicht sogar der Pseudo-Diskobeat in der vorliegenden Version – oder Exkursion – von Frau Cicciones „Music“ nicht negativ auffällt, für den kann das Dynamics-Album tatsächlich zu den Highlights 2007 gehören. Für mich kann ich nur sagen: Ich würde es wirklich gerne mögen, ich habe mich darauf gefreut, wie auf eine gute Flasche Wein, … die dann nach Essig schmeckt.
