The 2008-2009 banking crisis in the U.S. has produced a severe economic crisis in Mexico. The Mexican economy has contracted by 6.8% this year, among the worst in Latin America. Nobel Prize winning economist Joseph Stiglitz argues that unemployment there is not likely to recover soon.

In the midst of this crisis, the government of Mexico has accelerated the use of neoliberal economic policies which caused the original economic crisis by attacking a major union and shutting down a publicly owned electric company in preparation for privatization.
The government fired some 45,000 workers and forced the dissolution of the Mexican Electrical Workers (SME) union, one of the leading independent unions in Mexico.

At present there seems little evidence that the government take over will be reversed. The current NAFTA side agreements on labor rights are not being enforced. See DSA’s renegotiate NAFTA campaign:

by Dan La Botz

Tens of thousands of Mexican workers joined a national work stoppage to reverse the liquidation of the independent Electrical Workers union, but despite large and militant protests, its seems unlikely the government will be moved.

Tens of thousands of Mexican workers joined a national work stoppage on November 11 to pressure the Felipe Calderón government into reversing its seizure and liquidation of the Light and Power Company.

Benedicto Martínez, one of the three co-presidents of the independent Authentic Labor Front (FAT), told Labor Notes that the demonstrations in Mexico City were large and enthusiastic. “I believe that if workers resist and if the movement continues to grow things can change,” he said, adding a call for continued coalition-building and international solidarity, “perhaps in the form of demonstrations at consulates in other countries.”

Yet, despite the size and militancy of the protests, and the union’s view that the national work stoppage was a success, there seems little likelihood that the government will be moved.

The takeover of the power company last month was accompanied by the firing of about 45,000 workers and the dissolution of the Mexican Electrical Workers (SME) union, an independent union that had been a leader in the fight against the government’s corporate-oriented agenda.

While members of the union were themselves unable to strike this week, having been physically forced out of their workplaces by the police, they did march, demonstrate, and join protests, and other workers struck and protested on their behalf.

Striking workers blocked highways in several states, surrounded and closed down government buildings in Mexico City, tied up the capital’s streets, and then marched by the tens of thousands to the zócalo, the national plaza, for a protest rally. The government mobilized 10,000 police to respond to the protest and in Queretaro there were violent confrontations between police and strikers.

Calderón claimed that there had been attempts to shut down power in Mexico City and the surrounding states, but the union attributed power failures to the incompetence of those now running the plants.

Even as the strike took place, several cabinet secretaries repeated the government’s position that the company closing, the firing of the workers, and the elimination of the union are permanent.

NO, YOU’RE FIRED!

Speaking at the rally in the zócalo, Martín Esparza, head of the Electrical Workers, called upon Secretary of Labor Javier Lozano to “pick up his severance pay and get out.” That, in effect, is what Lozano himself has been telling the fired Electrical Workers.

So far, according to media reports, more than half of the fired workers have received their severance pay, suggesting that they have given up the struggle to get back their jobs. A leader of the Electrical Workers says that far fewer, about 10,000, have accepted their severance. The union, nevertheless, continues to mobilize members and to fight both in the courts and on the streets to reverse the government’s decision.

Esparza called for the movement to continue with a national general strike before the end of the year. Unlike many other Latin American countries, Mexico has never had such a general strike.

Last week a federal judge, responding to a petition from the Electrical Workers, issued an order stopping the Federal Labor Board from carrying out the liquidation of the company, though that decision may ultimately have no impact. The Legislative Assembly of the Federal District also filed a case before the Mexican Supreme Court in an attempt to stop the liquidation.

The president of the Supreme Court, however, declared that the assembly, similar to a state legislature in the U.S., has no business intervening in the fate of a federally administered institution, such as Light and Power. With that attempt stymied, the Hidalgo State Legislature plans to submit another petition to the Supreme Court seeking to block the government’s action.

A solid core of Mexico’s more militant union groups came out in support of the electrical workers. Telephone workers, university workers, miners and metal workers, and a dissident caucus within the Mexican Teachers Union all participated in the strike. Equally important has been support from Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who, after losing a 2006 election he says was stolen, set up a shadow government that attracts significant support from the country’s working people.

“Official” or pro-government union federations have turned their back on the Mexican Electrical Workers union, however. Some of these federations and unions, such as the Sole Union of Electrical Workers (SUTERM), have gone further, providing scabs to run the plants where SME members formerly worked.

Former Light and Power workers who are now seeking new employment complain that they are being blacklisted because they were members of the Mexican Electrical Workers union.

Image via Wikipedia

by Randy Shaw

The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) held a boisterous picket line in San Francisco last night, but their chants targeted a surprising adversary: labor leaders and their political allies. While California Democratic Party Chair John Burton (labor’s greatest California ally), State Senator Mark Leno and leaders of UNITE HERE, the Sailors, Plumbers, Building Trades, and Police and Fire unions, were inside the Plumbers Union Hall honoring the National Union of Healthcare Workers (NUHW), SEIU was outside denouncing NUHW – and by implication its supporters – as corrupt. Last week, SEIU informed Burton that it would end its $1 million annual donation to the state Party unless he withdrew his support for NUHW, which he refused to do.

SEIU’s threat to labor hero Burton, and its reported statement to the United Teachers of Los Angeles (sponsor of tonight’s NUHW fundraiser) that it would seek to organize charter school teachers in retaliation for UTLA’s pro-NUHW stance, reflects a union increasingly at odds with the labor movement. In July, 25 international union leaders condemned SEIU’s raids on UNITE HERE, and new AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka has since vowed to defend UNITE HERE against SEIU attacks. SEIU is now isolated, viewing fellow unions and pro-labor politicians as adversaries, and its scorched earth campaign against its former California health care leadership is coming at a steepening internal and political cost.

On a day when SEIU President Andy Stern joined hundreds of taxpayers protesting outside Goldman Sachs’ DC headquarters, the union he heads engaged in a vigorous street protest in San Francisco against labor leaders, political allies, and other supporters of the labor movement. SEIU’s protest further estranged it from a labor movement that Stern once aspired to lead, and culminates a year when its twin battles against NUHW and UNITE HERE have left the once inspiring union with more critics than friends in labor.

SEIU Against the World

When 2009 began, SEIU was generally recognized as the nation’s most powerful union, and Andy Stern was likely the best-known and most politically prominent U.S. labor leader. Barack Obama’s election appeared to usher in a new era of labor union growth, with SEIU and its Change to Win Labor Federation poised for tremendous gains.

But SEIU chose a different course. A week after Obama’s inauguration it put its third largest local, SEIU-UHW, in trusteeship, spawning a year long fight with its former leadership, who now operate under NUHW.

By April, SEIU had intensified raids against UNITE HERE, creating a bitter war with its once closest union ally. SEIU failed to force UNITE HERE to surrender and affiliate with SEIU, and its raids triggered angry denunciations from fellow labor leaders and the effective demise of Change to Win.

Is it bollocks. We’re so hungry for this right now, the last week or so has been one of the best ever but it’s the start of something not the end. Superb experience has just made us want more and more. Leeds was a great place to bring this tour to an end, massive massive rowdy crowd. Loved every second.

General Fiasco are a band on the up, watch out for them next year. ‘we are the foolish’ is one of the most addicitive hooky tunes going and is definately worth downloading from iTunes. We were playing it in the bus from after the first night and we’ll be listening to it for a long time yet.

Big thank you to The Enemy for taking the risk of taking an unsigned, relatively unknown, young new band out on tour, hopefully we did you proud. Every single member of their band and crew are legends, hope you enjoyed the drinks They sneeked a new song into the encore of their set, if it is a sign of things to come then the boys have set a very high bench mark. We’ve said it before but it’s an absolute stormer.

Right, we’ve got some serious hangovers to nurse. See you in Edinburgh on 1st December, keep your eyes on myspace.com/akeal and on facebook for some local gigs in between times. Peace and fucking yeah.x

In the dressing room waiting for sound check. It’s a mixture of emotions because this is the last date for us. The great thing is that we have Edinburgh Corn Exchange to look forward to on 1st December and we have the priviledge of supporting Exit Calm next month too. Check them out, next year is going to be big for them. We first supported them at Stereotype, superb band destined for big things.

Leeds are going to get it tonight, we’re fired up and rowdy. Doug has his money on tonight being the best of the tour which bodes well. 2300 sold out crowd. Plus we’ve got some friends and family here which always helps. Big thank you to those of you that have come along on the tour. It’s great that you have made the effort to support us.

All of you that are new to AKEAL and shouted, screamed and surfed. Massive shout out to you, best crowds ever. The northern crowds are better than southern crowds, FACT!

The Enemy and their crew have made us feel very welcome and have been very supportive. The amount of times we’ve heard, ‘I can’t believe you boys are unsigned’ is probably the biggest compliment we could be paid.

I know we keep saying this but last night was the best one yet. The crowd were amazing and really got behind us, I think that’s the best lighting we’ve had on the crowd for our set and we could see how full it was. Feels amazing to be playing 1000+ people each night but to play 1000+ in Newcastle was a real treat. Big shout out to the lads at the front, you made it for us.

After the gig we were invited back to the hotel for a night cap with the enemy boys. They absolutely stormed it last night and they love playing the toon. Everyone was buzzing afterwards, it takes a while to come down off the adrenaline.

And so here we are, 16th November and our last date on the tour (sort of as we’re going back to Edinburgh). It has been a rollercoaster and a huge learning curve but if anything it has taught us the importance of giving it your all. All the crew and bands have been brilliant and we have some fantastic memories already. This is the first step on a long road but we’re going to give it a good go and see where we get.

I went to go see The Enemy at carling academy on Wednesday and I have to admit it was the best gig I have ever been to, it was a 5* performance.

My sister had asked me to go with her because her friend wasn’t available and I was a bit unsure at first, I knew some of their songs but I was worried I might not enjoy it, man I was utterly and completely wrong about that.

Both support bands Akeal and General Fiasco were also good, but The Enemy were amazing they really know how to get the crowd roaring, (and if you have ever been to a gig in Glasgow you’ll know we are one of the best, and craziest audiences you will ever see) the light effects were outstanding as well as the quality of music and singing and what better way to win the audience over than to get some guy out and play the bagpipes.

I was at the very front (extremely lucky me) and got the best view of Tom as he was literally standing in front of me and I got some great pictures and videos, also Bassist Andrew decided to crowd surf so I dragged myself though the throng of people and managed to stroke his lovely sweaty back! and what was the topping on that wonderful Enemy cake you ask? “well getting Tom’s guitar pick would be good?” and that ladies and gentlemen I did achieve! It was one of the best nights of my music life.

But there is one problem, others in the audience are very desperate to get to the front and can sometimes forget about personal space and that’s all I’m saying about that. So, to conclude well done The Enemy and I can’t wait till you come to Glasgow again…soon hopefully because I’m now addicted to your music!

We just had the time of our lives in Sheffield tonight. Superb crowd, venue, sound, staff. Everything was laid on proper! We had our first ever crowd surfer and people chanting at us too. Proper brilliant feeling!

I think we’re starting to sound great now, the more we do this the better we’re getting. There are absolutely no nerves on stage now, we just want to turn heads and push this as hard as we can. We’re shifting loads of CD’s which means that hopefully people will be spreading the word everywhere we’ve been.

General Fiasco are sounding mint at the moment. Pick up thier tune on iTunes, ‘We are the foolish’. It is one of the catchiest tunes going, we can’t get it out of our heads.

The Enemy absolutely killed it tonight, they love playing in Sheffield and have been taking money on which gig will have the best crowd. I’m pretty sure Tom’s money was on tonight and he absolutely went to town on the crowd. They were singing his songs back at him long after they had finished. They’ve got a great new song in the encore too, if it is a sign of what to expect on the next album then they have set a very high bench mark.

As you can probably tell we’re having a great time, massive thanks to all the people who came up tonight. Great to see the friendly faces again.

The scots love getting fired up on beer and letting it all hangout and Tom sounded mint even with a very sore throat! They bought out a bagpipe player before the encore and the whole place went crazy.

We were lucky enough to be invited back to The Enemy’s hotel for a night cap. Andy’s a bit of a shark on the pool table and was carving it up. All the crew have been really accomodating and have made us feel very welcome.

Might have a few bevvies tonight because this place makes you want to got out and have it. Ought to say that the money that we’re spending on our beer is our own, the very very kind donations we have recieved are being spent on strictly business only. We are definately not pissing that money up the wall, it is all one of the kindest gestures we’ve ever recieved and we would never abuse that.

Preston was off it’s dick last night. Great to get one under our belts and we played well too. It’s weird signing cd’s and teesh and having photos taken by complete strangers. We’re just four ordinary lads from little towns in the midlands so it’s taking a bit of getting used to.

The boys from The Enemy left us some champagne in the dressing room after we played. That kick started our first session and now we all feel well ratty. We’re still going to carve it up at Liverpool though. It’s the last night of Liverpool music week so it’s a real priviledge to be playing in such a great city with a proper passion for music.

If you’re coming to any of the gigs check out General Fiasco, fucking great band and sound lads with it.

Thanks to all the friends and family that made it up last night. There’s loads of support for us and it’s making us feel right at home so it’s all appreciated.

So this is it, probably our biggest day ever as a band. In the next ten days we will play to more people in a single night than we have played to in total for the last two years.
We’ll be keeping this blog regularly updated throughout so check back from time to time if you can.

Last Friday (October 1) a crowd of over 70 people made it clear to a far-right gathering in Sydney that fascists are not welcome and that they will not be able to meet undisturbed.

A very successful community demonstration was held against KN (Klub National / Klub Nastiya), a monthly social gathering/drinking club for assorted neo-nazis, nationalists, racists and fascists. KN were holding their meeting at the Humanist Society Hall, on Shepherd St, Chippendale. There were 5 or 6 fascists present when the crowd of over 50 people came around the corner carrying signs saying “All You Fascists Bound to Lose” and “No Racist Meeting in Our Neighbourhood”. They locked themselves in the building while demonstrators outside yelled “Nazis out” and banged on the door and windows. The protesters outside were quickly joined by dozens more people who came out of nearby houses and the café on the corner, who were outraged to find out that fascists were meeting in their neighbourhood and joined in showing their disapproval.

The police came quickly but did not attempt to move the demonstrators on, though they kept people away from the building. After about an hour, the Public Order and Riot Squad blocked off a side street and pushed protesters back in order to allow a couple of nazi skinheads to enter the side door of the building. It was only the large police presence that allowed the fascists to have their get together.

If KN try to hold another meeting next month (November 6) at the Humanist Hall – and if the humanist society let them meet there – there will be a far bigger demonstration. If they get the message that they are not welcome in Chippendale and move somewhere else, we will follow them.

where were the pictures? even camera phone pictures are good. Where was the media coverage? we need to expand anti-Nazism and anti-fascism australiawide.

MAC statement on neo-Nazi attack on MARC

This statement has been prepared by the ‘Melbourne Anarchist Club’ (MAC), the owners of the ‘Melbourne Anarchist Resource Centre’ (62 St Georges Road, Northcote), in response to recent threatening behaviour by local neo-Nazis.

It is intended to explain what has happened, and our response to it.

WHAT HAPPENED

On the afternoon of Monday, September 28, 2009, four neo-Nazi skinheads, believed to belong to or to be closely associated with the neo-Nazi skinhead groups ‘Blood & Honour Australia’ and the ‘Southern Cross Hammerskins’, attended the MARC. The neo-Nazis interrupted a meeting of a group which happened to be meeting at the time (a group which campaigns against sexual violence).

The neo-Nazis were highly agitated and very aggressive, confronting those present and preventing their exit by blocking the front door. They screamed and shouted, pushed over book shelves, crowded individuals, and threatened physical violence (including the use of capsicum spray or ‘mace’). The neo-Nazis demanded to know if the individuals present were ‘antifa’ (anti-fascists), and to be provided with the name and location of the blogger ’slackbastard’. After approximately 10 minutes, they left MARC with a final ‘Sieg Heil!’.

One of those present at the meeting provides the following account:

At 3pm Monday the 28th of September, several of us were sitting in the Barricade bookshop when four men entered through the front door. One of them, who was carrying a can of mace [pepper spray], yelled for us to sit down and that they had a message to deliver (he also asked who was in charge!). They proceeded to deliver a message that amounted to threatening that the MARC space would be the first point of call if there was any more antifa [anti-fascist] activity in Melbourne. They pushed over two bookshelves and swept some zines off the table as they left… Nobody was hurt, and there was no damage done to the space, just some disorganised books. We were all a bit shaken, but looked after each other.

It is understood that the most vocal neo-Nazi was a man named Justin. Justin is in his mid- to late-30s, and has tattoos on his hands and neck. He is the Victorian organiser for ‘Blood & Honour’, and is also closely associated with the Hammerskins. It is also understood that Justin works at ‘Hold Fast Body Art’ tattoo studio in Burwood (13 Burwood Highway).

During the course of their intervention at MARC, Justin informed those present that his business had been graffitied, and demanded that ‘antifa’ cease all such activity, or that there would be violent repercussions for MARC and its users. It is understood that this was a reference to an alleged incident which took place on Monday, September 14, an account of which, ‘Anti-Fascists attack neo-Nazi’s business in Burwood’, was published anonymously on the Melbourne Indymedia website.

There is no independent confirmation of this incident, but given Justin’s subsequent behaviour, we understand it to be true.

In summary: on September 14, unknown parties graffitied a tattoo shop in Burwood with ‘anti-fascist’ slogans. Two weeks later, on September 28, four neo-Nazi skinheads, including an employee at the tattoo shop in question, attended the MARC in Northcote and assaulted a meeting of a group campaigning against sexual violence, threatening further violence upon the group, MARC, and its users, unless all ‘anti-fascist’ activity in Melbourne ceased immediately.

OUR RESPONSE

The Melbourne Anarchist Club remains committed to continuing to facilitate anarchist activity in Melbourne.

Thus the Melbourne Anarchist Resource Centre will continue to remain open to the public, and to be used by a variety of groups, including those campaigning for an end to sexual violence, for workers’ rights, and for environmental preservation;
as a venue for art, music and film;
as a source of information on contemporary struggles for justice, as well as historical inquiry;
and as a continuing resource for those, like the Melbourne Anarchist Club, who want to advance the cause of revolutionary, class-struggle anarchism.

In addition to reviewing, along with the various groups which make use of MARC, our security and safety procedures, the MAC is organising an Open Day for the general public.

The Open Day will take place on Saturday, November 28, and will include free food, entertainment, and a variety of other activities.

More details will be provided in coming weeks.

All are welcome.

¡No pasarán!

Celebrating Coventry’s rich musical heritage, from Frank Ifield to The Enemy More Than Two Tones brings together for the first time a fantastic selection of music memorabilia highlighting the vibrancy and creativity of the scene.

For many people the pinnacle of the city’s musical success came with 2 Tone, when The Specials and The Selecter created a distinctive sound reaching out to an international audience. Thanks to the recent highly successful revival of The Specials Coventry’s other musical heroes are being highlighted through the exhibition.

From the diversity of The Zodiacs, Frank Ifield and Vince Hill, through The Sorrows, The Mighty Avengers and Lieutenant Pigeon, to Hazel O’Connor, King, Panjabi MC, Stereo Nation and current chart successes, The Enemy the exhibition highlights their achievements.

Many of the artists have contributed instruments, on stage outfits, handwritten song lyrics, albums and posters to the exhibition and there is also a rare opportunity to see interviews with the artists in newly-made film footage. But lets not forget the exhibition would not be complete without the opportunity to listen to the great songs produced themselves.

The exhibition will be held at The Herbert, Coventry from Sat 3 October – Sun 3 January 2010. Free entry
