The EVIL DEAD remake has sent us all on a wild roller coaster ride of emotions already, and it hasn’t been released yet. With the release of the official trailer a few weeks ago a lot of opinions changed. I softened up a bit, but I still can’t forget that Diablo Cody contributed dialogue into the script. That’s just a huge black mark against this film. So here we are with the red band trailer. This is definitely NOT SAFE FOR WORK!! I gotta say that it’s a pretty damn good looking trailer. But Diablo Cody ……..

The EVIL DEAD remake is directed by Fede Alvarez, the screenplay is written by Alvarez, Rodo Sayagues, and Diablo Cody, and the film stars Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Jessica Lucas, and Elizabeth Blackmore. Check out the plot crunch:

In the much anticipated remake of the 1981 cult-hit horror film, five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin. When they discover a Book of the Dead, they unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.

EVIL DEAD is slated to hit theaters on April 12, 2013 and I gotta say that this one has me enough that I’ll be there opening night. Now check out the red band trailer and tell me what you think.

But THAT’S definitely new…

The EW.com article we very recently re-blogged was an in-depth analysis for THIS nasty, wicked, sick new full-length red band trailer. We’re worried this trailer contains ALL the gore in the movie, because we don’t know how they can top plenty of what is seen here. Shit, we don’t know how they’ll even get away with it. What we meant to do was read the EW.com piece, re-blog it, then watch the trailer at the very end of the piece after writing something enthusiastic yet graceful. What we should have done was follow that plan. What we did instead was get two pages (tops) into the 12-page EW.com piece, then what little willpower and professionalism we began with suddenly went crashing out through the window all at once, as the only thought barging into our brains screamed ENOUGH WAITING, FUCK THAT! WATCH IT NOW! NOW! and we did so immediately.

Jesus CHRIST, you guys!

I don’t know how this movie is going to get away with an R-Rating, even this red band trailer had us stunned, wincing, and (rarer yet), momentarily speechless. Just try watching through to the end without wincing and protectively grabbing your mouth/jaw. We still can’t do it! So put down anything you’re eating or drinking* (even water, who knows, you could do a spit-take) and watch this full-length, gruesome, filthy, WONDERFUL trailer below (in HD) now! We won’t spoil the end… until after the jump.

When the first red band “teaser” trailer (with a little more conversation and a little less action) was released and we posted it in Fall 2012, we made a huge-ass collection of screen caps for a slideshow to post later. Then ADD kicked in (maybe that was about the same time they released the first five minutes and the new opening credits for American Horror Story Asylum) and it didn’t happen.

Oh, did we say grabbing our JAW? We forgot to mention our EYE. Actually, not 100% sure I want to know what the story behind this screen grab from the full-length trailer even IS.

Well, we just started taking screen-shots of this one, so look for a nasty slide show coming up (though probably not before the finale of American Horror Story Asylum at the end of January, that’s pretty time-intensive)

The new, surprisingly subdued one sheet for the Evil Dead remake. The text over a photo thing has been a bit overdone in the last couple of years but I’m really liking this poster…A lot in fact. I haven’t bought a one sheet in forever (because they mostly suck nowadays) but I wouldn’t mind owning this. The reason I’m rambling more than usual on this “Pic of the Day” post is probably because I’m a bit shocked by how much I dig it. It could also be because of all the drinking I did earlier. Official Red Band Trailer for Evil Dead Remake Drops

Gotta admit that this one kinda snuck up on me. I wasn’t expecting to see the red band trailer for the EVIL DEAD remake for a few more months, but the producers/filmmakers have cranked one out. And I must say that I’m torn. The trailer looks fantastic. Some great shots, great gore, and it even looks as though they’re going to recreate the tree-raping scene from the original. It’s a lot better looking than I thought … but. Yeah, there’s always a big but!! There’s two words that still scare me about this remake. Diablo. Cody. Gore is great and all, but if the dialogue is insufferable, then what’s the point? I know I’ve been hard on this one, but I’m big enough to admit that this one has me intrigued.

Here it is. The day we’ve all been holding our breaths over. The first still of the upcoming EVIL DEAD remakehas dropped and at least the filmmakers are leading with a strong still. For those of you familiar with the original EVIL DEAD and EVIL DEAD 2, this image will be quite familiar. Star of Evil Dead Remake, Jane Levy, Discusses her Role

It’s been a while since I disgusted anyone by reporting any new developments about THE EVIL DEAD remake, but this is just too mind-blowing to pass up. The actress playing the role closest to the “Ash character” from the original talked a little about her role with The Marin Independent Journal, and I must say … oh hell; find out for yourself:

“For a while, whenever I was asked what my dream role would be, my answer was always to play a killer or a psychopath,” says Jane Levy, who grew up in San Anselmo and stars in ABC’s new comedy series Suburgatory … “I get to do that in this movie, although I’ll be possessed while I destroy my victims. So basically, it’s a perfect job,” she says with a laugh.

Okay; now we know her character is possessed and starts killing off the rest of the cast. Wow … it sounds NOTHING like the original. Real shocker there. Just one more nail in the “avoid this remake” casket!!

THE EVIL DEAD remake is being produced by Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert, and Bruce Campbell and Fede Alvarez is directing. The flick stars Jane Levy, Lou Taylor Pucci, Shiloh Fernandez, Jessica Lucas, and Elizabeth Blackmore.

Stars of Evil Dead Remake Talk about More In-Depth

It hasn’t even wrapped up filming yet and already THE EVIL DEAD remake has been on a roller coaster ride. Most recently the production hired their new main actress, Jane Levy (star of the painfully unfunny and tedious SUBURGATORY), after previous star, Lily Collins, bailed due to a scheduling conflict. Theinsider.com caught up with Levy and Bruce Campbell to get their takes on the remake. The answers are … well, they’re pretty standard and what I was expecting to read. What’s honestly kinda pissing me off is that originally we were told that there was not gonna be any kind of character to take on the role Bruce Campbell made famous, Ash. Okay, fine. I can live with that. But now with Jane Levy being hired, we’re suddenly hearing her role being described as the “Ash-like character in the remake.” Sigh. Let’s hear what these two have to say.

First Bruce Campbell:

“You can expect to have a damn scary horror movie. There’s no Ash character — The Evil Book is going to torment a new set of kids, so it’s a remake, or a re-imagining or … a re-whatever word you want to use. It’s going to be re-scary.”

Really. So part of the people involved in the remake tell us there’s no Ash character and the other half tell us there’s gonna be an Ash-like character. Make up your minds!! Let’s see what sugar tits has to say:

“I’m a big fan of the original. To me it’s the scariest movie, ever. But this one is really different. They’ve changed it a lot, but it’s still a pretty gory movie. My mom probably can’t see it.”

As for the tone, Jane says, “I think the humor in the first one came from the special effects of the time. I don’t know that they meant it to be funny … this one is not funny. It’s definitely dark.”

I wanna believe Levy but we’ve all heard stars talk about how “different” past remakes would be (I’m looking at you NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET remake)!! But I know I’m being hard on this one but I will be seeing it and I’m gonna go into with an open mind. I really hope it kicks ass and that I have to apologize for all the negative things I’ve said about it. My fingers are crossed. What do you all think?

New Cast Members Join The Evil Dead Remake

Yeah, I know. News of THE EVIL DEAD remake makes my balls crawl up inside myself. But this is horror news and I do run a horror website. So here it goes. Not too long ago I ran the story that Lily Collins, who was to play the lead in the remake, bailed out on the project, citing “scheduling issues” as the reason for her departure (see the story here). But at least the production is moving somewhat forward (is that a good thing??); a few recently added cast members have joined the party: Jane Levy and Shiloh Fernandez (RED RIDING HOOD) have recently signed on to do battle with the deadites. Now word has it that Lou Taylor is in talks to join on as Eric, “An intense academic whose intellectual curiosity gets him and his friends into trouble.” In other words, Eric opens up the book and releases the deadites!! Here’s a little more on the project:

[THE EVIL DEAD remake] is a reinvention of Sam Raimi’s 1981 cult classic about a group of teens at a remote cabin who discover a Book of the Dead that unleashes demons they can’t control. While the new plot is similar to the original, it is a new take that doesn’t include the Ash character played by Bruce Campbell.

Fede Alvarez is directing from a script he co-wrote with Rodo Sayagues with revisions by Diablo Cody. Raimi, Campbell, and Rob Tapert are producing for Ghost House Pictures, and Sony Pictures will distribute the film.

Wait a minute … originally this was called a ‘remake.’ But this word was tossed aside for the ever-so-popular ‘re-imaging.’ But now they’re throwing around the rarely used ‘reinvention’ jargon. What gives? Soon they’re gonna report that this remake has no connection whatsoever to the original EVIL DEAD!! We’ll see.

The Evil Dead Remake Loses its Star

I’ve gotta be honest … I’ve pretty much already checked out on THE EVIL DEAD remake. Everything about it sounds like they’re going in the wrong direction. Bringing in Diablo Cody to do re-writes; leaving out the character of Ash altogether; making a remake of THE EVIL DEAD. It all feels so wrong!!

According to IndieWire.com, Lily Collins, who landed the lead in the remake, has bailed on the project just weeks after signing on. Jeff Sneider, from Variety, tweeted the following tweet:

Again, in case you missed it, LILY COLLINS is OUT of THE EVIL DEAD reboot due to a scheduling issue. Agents, start your engines…

Now Sam Raimi and directer Fede Alvarez need to find a new lead … and fast!! THE EVIL DEAD remake already has a release date set for April 12, 2013. I feel this one going on the back burner pretty soon people. Something ain’t right in them there woods.

The Evil Dead Remake is Heading Overseas ... to Jellystone Park??

I know that I’ve been pretty hard on THE EVIL DEAD remake, but rightly so. They aren’t gonna have an “Ash” character, the script was revised by Diablo Cody who keeps insisting and assuring us that it’s violent and bloody (“Methinks the lady doth protest too much”), and there’s a newly added ‘drug theme’ in the script. But now, according to Bloody-Disgusting, Ghost House/Mandate Pictures and Sony/FilmDistrict will be taking the production to New Zealand next March to begin lensing. Why New Zealand?

“You see Yogi Bear? Well, much of the same locations. Beautiful forest area”

What? That’s right; the Ranger’s station/cabin that was used in the 2010 film, YOGI BEAR, might be the cabin where they film THE EVL DEAD remake. Let’s just put the entire Yogi Bear connection aside. New Zealand does make sense. This is where Raimi shot most of his productions (like XENA).

But there’s something else I’d like to discuss. What is it that made THE EVIL DEAD such a kick ass film? Well for me there wasn’t just one thing, but it was all the various elements together. You had a dynamic young filmmaker who had a (at the time) unique approach to making films; you had a great, amateur cast headed up by future horror icon, Bruce Campbell; you had a kick ass script that wasn’t overly complicated; and you had the challenge of a very modest budget. The original has an estimated budget of $325,000. The remake is estimated at $14,000,000. Do they really need to go overseas to make this film? Director Fede Alvarez should approach this remake with a “guerrilla filmmaking” mentality in order to try and recapture some of the bat-shit crazy energy of the original. I’m not saying that Alvarez isn’t gonna do a good job, I’m just saying that too much dough could make the production flat.

I really want this remake to kick ass. I really do. This is one of the pivotal films I watched when I was (too) young that turned me into the rabid, diehard horror fan you see before you. But I just don’t know how they’re gonna pull this one off without having a character like “Ash” in it, and by having Cody writing her shitty dialogue. We have a long wait (it’s not slated until 2013), but I can’t really say this is on the top of my list of films to see. Maybe once some stills and trailers start rolling in our collective minds will be satiated. Maybe?

The story centers on five friends holed up at a remote cabin where they discover a Book of the Dead with a demonic force unleashed possessing each until only one is left to fight for survival. As we exclusively reported,there is a drug subplot.

Casting is currently underway for the friends, David, Natalie, Eric, Olivia, and Mia. David is a mechanic and is engaged to Natalie. Mia is the friend who is heading to the cabin to detox; Olivia is her best friend/nurse. Eric, presumably, is the kid who unleashes the demons.

Plot Details Emerge for The Evil Dead Remake. Yikes!!

Here it is folks. This is the news we’ve been waiting for … the news that is either gonna get us on board with the remake or send us off running into the dark, haunted woods to hide from it. After reading this I’ve already made up my mind, but I’m gonna let you do the same. According to MovieHole.net, they have the details of the plot for THE EVIL DEAD remake:

Is it the “Evil Dead” we know and love though? With the quick quips, camp humour and cool-as-ice hero? Nope. Not at all. In fact, from what our contact tells us it’s much more akin to “The Shining”. And after hearing the story and getting a good grasp on the tone they’re going for here, I’m convinced it’ll be a no-laugh zone this one.

THE SHINING? What? And what’s up with getting rid of all the humor and camp? To me that’s the same thing as taking all the scenes in the water out of a JAWS remake … it’s the backbone of those films!! Oh but there’s more people … a lot more.

These aren’t cartoonish heroes like Bruce Campbell’s Ash was in the original films, these are real folks with real world problems. And by golly are they in for some scary- not at all amusing -shit.

Hhmmm. Again; not impressed. Oh but there’s still more. And now we’re gonna get to the meat and bones of the plot, AND THERE ARE SPOILERS beyond this point. Don’t say I didn’t warn you!! Again, if you don’t want to read any spoilers for the upcoming EVIL DEAD remake, STOP READING HERE.

I warned ya; here we go:

Mia and David, estranged siblings who have recently lost their mother (Mia’s taking it the hardest being that she’s the one who spent most days at the hospital watching her mother deteriorate) have reunited, along with some old friends and his David’s fiancee, for an intervention at THAT old cabin. It’s here that the near rehabilitated Mia (who has apparently already been cast) will also toss the last of her drugs down the well and finally go cold Turkey.

A big storm sets in. Everyone heads to the cabin. The book of the dead is found, and arrogant Eric (one of the friends along for the trip) takes the most interest in transcribing passages from it. Always the dicks that bring the trouble, right?

Meanwhile Mia struggles with her newly sober self — BIG TIME. She was going slightly loopy anyway from a recent overdose (one in which she technically died from but was brought back) so no surprise that Mia is the first and worst to go bananas. And no surprise either that nobody believes her crazy claims of coyote dogs and trees attacking her!

Convinced this is just a crazy druggo coming to grips with her new reality, the gang insist Mia stay put. As far as they’re concerned, she’ll do anything to get out of the cabin and back to the comfort of a bar.

The stuff Mia starts seeing (she sees in the mirror a bloody face with a cracked skull sticking out) and doing (vomiting blood and vile at her friends; getting trigger-happy with a rifle) is alarming; but again, David and co say she’s not leaving until she’s cold turkey. Bad idea obviously — the more time in the cabin, the further the demon that lives there can climb inside her body and take it over.

Covered in burns and blisters, and with bloodshot eyes, and complete with a new macabre grin, Mia goes all Jack Torrance on her mates. Even after she’s injected with tranquilizers, the wild young woman is still a menace. They have no choice but to lock her in.. well, “Evil Dead” fans will know what that’s about.

There’s some fun moments. With great effects, they could look a treat. For instance, when the gang do decide its time to get Mia to the hospital, David grabs the girl and they drive to the bridge they came in on… Only its gone now! Water has swallowed it whole.

The demons plan, of course, is to take everyone’s soul by the end of the film (with Mia’s help). There’s no Ash to make sure that doesn’t happen, so it’s grim..

Hhmmm. I must say that there’s certain elements in here that sound pretty good. In fact there’s enough solid ideas here to possibly be a good horror film. BUT this isn’t supposed to be just a ‘horror film.’ It’s supposed to be a remake of THE EVIL DEAD. It’s not. They changed too damn much of it: No camp, no humor, no Ash, and it all sounds like it’s gonna be a serious horror flick. But we can’t forget this is supposed to be a remake of one of the genre-defining films ever made. In this respect I’m thoroughly disgusted. The moviehole.net article ends with wise words:

Without the humor, without Ash… It’s not deserving of the title. It should be released as a stand-alone. I know that’s not how things work, brands equaling bucks, but it’s such a shame that a moderately decent horror movie spells doom for one of the most anticipated horror/comedy sequels of all time, “Evil Dead 4″.

So it’s safe to say that this film will be getting reviews that say it’s decent as a horror movie, but shitty as an EVIL DEAD remake. What do you all think?

Diablo Cody Says The Evil Dead Remake is "Unbelievably Violent" ... We'll See

Back in September the news broke that Diablo Cody, the unter-mind behind JENNIFER’S BODY, was working on THE EVIL DEAD script. After a collective “fuck me” rose from horror fans everywhere, we’re finally now getting more details … and the news sounds good.

In a recent interview with Collider, it seems Cody doesn’t really have all that much involvement with THE EVIL DEAD remake. She also mentions that she didn’t write a treatment of the film from ground zero, but she was given a draft that was written by the remake’s director, Fede Alvarez:

Collider: If I’m not mistaken, you did a draft or wrote the Evil Dead remake.

Diablo Cody: I did a draft. I did like a polish slash rewrite on the pre-existing, excellent script by Fede Alvarez.

Do you know if the draft that you submitted is the one they’re shooting with?

Cody: I’m not 100% sure. I guess it’s possible that that’s the one, but for all I know they could have commissioned another rewrite, you never know. Are they shooting right now? … I think it’s going forward. I’m really excited to hear about it cause it was fun to work on.

Okay; so it sounds like at most she smoothed out some rough edges in Alvarez’s script and added in some scenes for continuity and such. I can deal with that. But how much did she actually change? Here’s what Cody had to say:

Because the director’s draft was really scary, I tried to stay away from some of the big horror set pieces. I didn’t wanna mess with his vision, because he’s the one who ultimately has to shoot it. That being said, there is a moment near the—I mean it’s unbelievably violent (laughs). Occasionally I threw in a wound here or there. I didn’t write anything extravagant.

I’m starting to feel better about her involvement. But what about her standard type of cutsie dialog that was all over JUNO and even infected JENNIFER’S BODY?

I did not do like the standard dialogue people associate with me at all. I did very naturalistic dialogue that I felt would serve the story.

Aahhh … I feel much better now!! It’s starting to sound like bringing Cody on to THE EVIL DEAD remake project was a strategic one. Maybe they were trying to secure the younger generation demographic that sees her films. It really kind of sounds like her involvement with the script is minimum, at best.

Will Diablo Cody Really Write the Remake of The Evil Dead?

If you read the article, my headline slightly misleads. A guy named Fede Alvarez is both directing and writing a supposed remake, but Diablo Cody is “doing revisions” on the most recent draft. You know, Diablo Cody who wrote Juno and Jennifer’s Body (and United States of Tara, which I’ve admittedly never seen). The same Diablo Cody who seems as if she learned English by watching Kevin Smith movies. Don’t get me wrong: I don’t have anything against Cody, per se. This normally wouldn’t be cause for alarm except that The Evil Dead (and yes, the first one is called The Evil Dead) doesn’t need the glossy super-referential teen-hipster one-liners and snappy back-and-forth that her work tends to showcase. The dialogue in The Evil Dead is campy and cheesy and in parts terrible on purpose. If we must explain our suspicion and hesitation, answer this: why don’t (most) truck stop eateries include foie gras on their menus? Because it just doesn’t fit.

Really? We need to remake this?

Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell are still involved, but right now only in the “producer” capacity. That’s not where they need to be. They need to be writing/directing/acting, which they did…in the original The Evil Dead. Bruce Campbell is gung-ho, as he should be when promoting a new project, but says pretty clearly that the project is a remake. Why this need remake, y’all? What is the purpose of this reanimation? What are you going to do, jazz up the awesome cheap-ass effects? Refine the script (apparently)? Polish up the mise-en-scene? The cruddiness of the original was the main reason we loved it. When you create a work of art, even if tongue-in-cheek, let it be or else run the risk of regressing toward the mean.

Maybe I’m being a prick about this, but it seems we’ve all been burned in the last few years, with few exceptions, by remakes, reboots, re-imaginings, sequels, prequels, seqprereshizzles, whatever. Since it looks like the movie is going to be remade no matter what, let’s look at the bright side: Alvarez showed promise with his short film Panic Attack, both on the visual and aural ends (good use of the 28 Days Later theme). Giving him a not-too high profile or expensive gig like this probably makes sense to see if he’s got the chops to pull it off, though I wish he wasn’t messing with a cult classic. Diablo Cody has already written a decent horror flick, so maybe if she’s touching up the story and not the dialogue…And as I mentioned before, Raimi and Campbell are probably watching this thing like a hawk. After all, we put our trust in them before, and they repaid us with Evil Dead II and Army Of Darkness. Let’s hope they come through again.
