Off we go!

80 The Breeders – Title TK (2002) (left) – I’ve forgiven Kim Deal for the bodily injury inflicted on me in 1994. I have also forgiven her for taking her time between Breeders albums. I think many people were disappointed with Title TK as it had no “Cannonball” and felt more like a home demo than an album 8 years in the making (well, it might not have been in the making for all those years).

79 Amon Tobin – Supermodified (2000) – I remember having a conversation with someone in 2000 about how electronic wasn’t just a flash in the pan but it was hear to stay. Sadly, looking back on that, it was sort of like Homer claiming that the height of rock and roll was Grand Funk Railroad. It doesn’t mean that the decade was bereft of excellent electronic, it just means that it quickly receded into the background (or hybridized effectively).

78 Passion Pit – Manners (2009) – Speaking of which, this might be a prime example of the electro-hybridization. There is a level of uncomfortableness in the album, maybe with the forced falsetto vocals or children yelling the chorus, but really, that is what made it so fascinating. Or maybe I just like music that makes me feel a little uneasy, much like …

77 Xiu Xiu – Fabulous Muscles (2004) – I give a lot of people a hard time for listening to bands that I consider, well, unlistenable because all they seem to do is f&%k around with instruments and suddenly get praised for their genius. Then I think that I might not have an appendage on which to stand because of my undying love for Xiu Xiu. Too bad, I’m going to go on living with this inconsistency.

76 The Faint – Danse Macabre (2001) - My friend Melissa, who seems to have vanished into oblivion, introduced me to the Faint in a record store somewhere in Cambridge. I probably spent a good part of the next year listening to this album.

75 New Pornographers – Mass Romantic (2001) (right) – I checked both Mass Romantic and Electric Version out from the Corvallis Public Library (nice job on the part of the music purchasers there), not really knowing what to expect beyond the fact that I had read “hey, the New Pornographers are good.” The last thing I expected was a pile of power pop that was like a lo-fi revival of the Cars (but better).

74 Hot Chip – Made in the Dark (2008) – Sometimes I think that Hot Chip will slowly climb into the top 10 of my favorite bands – sort of like a Pet Shop Boys 2.0. Made in the Dark did nothing to dispel that notion.

73 YACHT – I Believe in You. Your Magic is Real (2007) – I think this album is a fine example of what happens when a band that spent too much time dithering around on previous albums trying to be “experimental” sits down and tries to write pop songs. And yes, it works like a charm. Note to many bands: being catchy and succinct isn’t a sin.

72 Ratatat – Remixes Vol. 1 and 2 (2004/2007) – Maybe I cheated a little bit by including these unreleased (well, released briefly for free on the internet) remix albums on this list, but very few ‘mix tape’ adventures had as much of an impact on my listening habits as Ratatat’s. I eagerly await Vol. 3.

71 Tilly & the Wall – Wild Like Children (2004) (left) – I am a sucker for charming bands and Tilly & the Wall turned the charm dial up to 11. Tap dance percussion? Check. Mixed male-female vocals? Check. Songs about love? Check. They might be a little gimmicky, but you know, sometimes that AOK.

Here is your iTunes iMix for 80-71, which sadly lacks any of the Ratatat remixes and oddly, the Breeders (go figure, iTunes lacks Title TK). Thankfully you can find Ratatat’s remix of Allure on Youtube (audio only) and the Breeders’ “Huffer” (on Conan) as well.

I haven’t seen or heard much from this band for a long while, but I still love them. Coyote Bones started in 2006 and has been road tripping since. This band had originally formed to see friends and place music for them. Coyote Bones then turned into a full fledged band that’s been recording and touring ever since. Their sounds are/were always evolving, the live show just kept getting better and better, and then they disappeared. I feel the need to feature them because I miss seeing them live. Their shows and music are very heartfelt, and they are the nicest people in the world. I wonder where they vanished to?
Some bands that have influenced their sound are, of course, The Faint, Tilly and the Wall and other favorite locals such as Connor Oberst.
As far as I know they have no new shows coming up and I couldn’t even tell you the band members names because I can’t find any information about them anywhere. If you know anything about them, send me a comment.
So checkout their videos and dance!:

Formed in Leeds in early 2006 by Owen Brinley (guitar/vocals/keys) and drummer Dominic Ord, Grammatics‘ have fused disparate musical and literary influences, to make cultured, artistic pop by their own elaborate rules.

With the dancefloor bass lines of Rory O’Hara and the cut-throat cello of Emilia Ergin, they fuse a love of classic British art bands like Blur, Pulp, Radiohead and Suede, with an equal fondness for acts of a heavier, dancier persuasion: The Faint, Hot Chip, Queens Of The Stone Age

After returning from the massive Bloc Party tour in October, Grammatics are about to embark on their own UK Tour, where they will be showcasing some new material.

Louis asked me to take photos at the Faint’s DJ set (Depressed Buttons) at Empty Bottle, and I immediately was intrigued. Having heard The Faint’s music before, but not even knowing that they DJ’d as well took me by surprise, and I accepted the offer. He also asked me to snap a couple of him and his partners in crime on the decks, and while I wasn’t terribly stoked on the set of photos I walked away with, I got a couple I liked alright.

500 días con ella

“This is not a love story”

Irónico, ¿no?

He’s done some really great work for some amazing artists and bands. He even did the shipping bags for yours truly. The bags for my shirt project The Naylor News came out great and Danny’s been a really good friend for a long time. His special lady Lauren Noble is also a good friend and an awesome photographer.

Danny and I use to play in a band together. In fact our tour along the west coast is what introduced me to the radness that is PDX and served as a basis for us following the Oregon Trail.

Side Note:

I meant to mention this but a couple weeks when I was driving and I saw this:

Ok, So this wasn’t the plate that I saw but the photo I took came out like crap, so this is just an example. It made me chuckle that Idaho settled on the slogan “Famous Potatoes”. Not trying to harsh Idaho’s potatoe buzz or whatever, but it got me thinking about other possible plates.

So I threw a couple together. I’m just waiting to hear back from their respective DMVs for approval. Wish me Luck!

I’ve always wanted to see a show at Cafe Eleven in St. Augustine. It just seems like a great venue with a cool group of people who support them.

I missed two shows last year that I’m really kicking myself for, Vampire Weekend and Against Me! Now is the time to redeem myself. I plan on seeing Junior Boys in October and Elvis Perkins in November.

I have found that October-November are the months to catch good shows in North Florida. Last year I got a chance to see The Faint w/ The Show’s the Rainbow and then followed it up the next day with some Portugal. The Man.

Gossip Girl is not, as you might predict from the title, a “chick flick” tv series.

It’s similar to The OC in that it’s about wealthy upper class privileged teenagers with problems, and in that both series were/are created by Josh Schwartz. I watched The OC fairly avidly but I was never a big fan. I found that often issues would be closed off in a matter of episodes (before any full ramifications could be explored), leaving little room for character development.
I’ve always liked Schwartz’s “No heroes, no villains” approach to the creation of his characters, but it always seems inevitable that some characters will be favoured over others. Case in point, The OC’s Julie Cooper did some heinous things to her daughter and right before Marisa was offed the red-headed minx apologised for not always being “the best” mother. Sure, not “the best,” just cruel to the point where it’s nearly considered criminal!
Fortunately Schwartz has learnt a few lessons the hard way since then and there are marked improvements in his second television show, Gossip Girl. Namely there are characters we all hate (there’s a reason why Vanessa should never have much luck climbing the social ladder) and that’s okay. They’re not “villains” but we’re allowed to hate them anyway. Thankfully Vanessa hasn’t done anything too outrageous and then turned around and swept it under the rug with a throw-away apology.
And cleverly, Blair, who has a reputation for being “the crazy bitch in town” is ultimately the most loved character. She’s viewed as honest and hard working as she blackmails her way to the top.

And with the exception of a few episodes (re: the episode where Serena supposedly “kills” someone (she didn’t) was a complete premature ejaculative let down) plot lines take the characters in new and believable directions.

As Gossip Girl follows the story of upper East side New Yorkers, the glamorous outfits, parties, and fit outs also make for palatable viewing. And watch as fans clamour over each other to buy items like the signature “Chuck Bass scarf.”

Season two racked up some substantial hot goss surprises! A late seasonal shift in the dynamic (Blair “rooming” with Georgina at NYU; Blair and Chuck… DATING???!; Serena and Eric have a Dad??!) promises a solid third season, which kicks off in the US this Monday 14 September!!!

You can tell I'm stuck for names when I go for lyrics as the title After last weeks mixtape, I

You can tell I'm stuck for names when I go for lyrics as the title

After last weeks mixtape, I’ve had sort of a natural step away from electro, and have been listening to a lot of indie music as a result. That’s one of the benefits of being into different sorts of music, it gives you a chance to take a breather and enjoy the new stuff more when it comes along.

Parisian-based Phoenix have sort of broken through with their last album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, and whilst songs like Lisztomania and 1901 are essentially pop-orientated, there’s some more interesting stuff beneath the surface, and as a result I prefer their last album – It’s Never Been Like That. Here are two songs by Phoenix, one from each of the aforementioned albums.

Rome – Phoenix

Courtesy Laughs – Phoenix

We Are Scientists released their second album towards the end of last year, and I was a little disappointed by the sudden change of direction, and in a desparate attempt to re-live the enjoyment of their first album, With Love and Squalor, I got a hold of a copy of their collection of B-sides, Crap Attack. Whilst some B-side compilations justify the choice of tracklist for the album, and some of them show a band’s greed, this one showed two entirely different things. Firstly, that the album should have been longer; at 12 tracks and roughly 40 minutes long, I can’t see many reasons for leaving the two tracks below from it. They may well have made more successful singles too. Secondly, beyond these two tracks, and possibly Ram It Home, We Are Scientists didn’t have much else in their locker at that point, there’s nothing much else of note, even the cover of Hoppipolla is laboured. However, I positively adore these cast-offs.

History Repeats – We Are Scientists

This Means War – We Are Scientists

I somehow missed out on this next track when I first came across it, but after re-visiting The Faint in general, it’s quite a good one, and I am making up for lost listening right now.

Paranoiattack – The Faint

All of the songs from this post have been on heavy rotation on my iTunes, but I’m fairly sure that only one of them will last any length of time, and it comes from The Horrors’ new album, Primary Colours. It’s heavily influenced by Ian Curtis, and it’s joyfully (no pun intended) dark. I love the build up in this track, and whilst it’s not as cutting edge as Joy Division, nor does it have the lyrical genius, it is musically what I would like to think to be the direction that JD would have taken, especially the second half.

I didn’t expect to be cranking out so many mixes this year but after positive response to the Summer Bumber and Beach Bump mixes I was urged to do another summer-themed mix. Because it’s always summer in California getting into the groove of partytime was easy for this one. Be Here Now demands your attention for a rump-shaking party groove and 60 minutes of push and pull mixing. House vibe, tech sounds, funky bass, big drops, nasty samples and lots of groove. Hope you dig it..

Music emotionally engineers me to feel whatever it wants every time I listen to it. I really have no

Music emotionally engineers me to feel whatever it wants every time I listen to it. I really have no control over it, regardless of how intensely I’m into a project or consciously trying to ignore it. I suspect it comes from being an auditory learner – there’s really no way to shut off your ears without earplugs! Anyway, I have a bunch of geek music I’ve collected over the years and I think it’s time I share it with the world

So everything I could find on the Amazon MP3 Store, I’ve linked to here in the playlist because the truth is: geeks are a very small clique that simply doesn’t generate as much income for the artists as your normal, run-of-the-mill boring pop culture radio blether. So please, support the artists – they really need your help!

Geekster Rap

Much of the great geek music collection here owes much to the underground Nerdcore subculture. But I’ve classified the music even further by distinguishing the vulgar, testosterone-infused vulgar Geekster Rap (which is almost a direct parody of classic Gangster Rap) from the rest of the Nerdcore scene.

(Ode to the DEFCON) Badgez

DEFCON 15’s Badgehacking Team Winner, Team Osogato, went all out on their badgehacking submission: they got a friend-of-a-friend (The Brothers Grimm) who was a Nerdcore rapper to create a rap from the poem Joe Grand wrote in the DEFCON schedule booklet that year. It sounds really great too! Download mp3 (Free)

Secrets From the Future

MC Frontalot is probably my all-time favorite Nerdcore Rapper. He’s got an exquisite sound and an intuitive sense of (geek) culture in his music. His track, “Secrets from the Future” has a god-like quality to it: I think it was even composed at DEFCON? Man I would have killed to see him at DEFCON. Anyway, lyrics are here.
Fuck the MPAA [NSFW]

Oh yeah, back when I was in 6th grade the cool thing to do was post those bright yellow “STOP THE MPAA” bumper stickers all over town. Several of the payphones at school had those bumperstickers plastered all over them (I can neither confirm nor deny placing them there). The Futuristic Sex Robotz took it to a whole new level of cool with this song. Oh and pretty much anything by FSR is obscenely vulgar (but awesomely geeky), so obviously nowhere near safe for work: Download mp3 (Free)

Partytron (Electronic)

The Geeks Were Right & The Conductor

The Faint has quickly become one of my favorite artists of all time. They’ve got this grungy, industrial sound plus kickin’ bass beats: I dub this new genre… Partytron! “The Conductor” is about the conductor of an orchestra, stepping up to the stage and taking control of the music. “The Geeks Were Right” is all about the Sci-fi Prediction that we’ll all become robots someday actually comes true. The Faint gets a HUGE less-than-three from me

The Geeks Were Right

The Conductor (Thin White Duke Remix)

8-bit Remixes

So, this is probably the most represented genre of the geek music I listen to. Everyone and their mother has probably heard a video game theme remix somewhere along the lines. So I’ve decided to focus on only the *good* ones, lol.

RAC's Nintendo vs. Sega EP

RAC’S Nintendo vs. Sega EP

I can’t pick my favorite from this album: EVERYTHING is great. RAC is pretty much the crowned king of video game remixes in my world. Sonic and Mario getting together on the weekends for an 8-bit Party? Oh YEAH! The Remix Artist Collective Agency (RAC) is a group of artists that remix all kinds of popular music: I pretty much read (RAC Remix) next to any song as (Eff-YEAH Remix). Download zip of entire album (Free)

Anything by EEPROM

EEPROM is pretty much the God of Leah’s Musical World. Everything he touches turns to gold – I honestly haven’t found any song that he’s created that my mind hasn’t been blown countless times over.

Yet again this game is pretty self explanatory (just follow the instructions) and if you happen to be a fan of The Faint then you’ll enjoy the game and if you happen to hate The Faint then you’ll probably love this game.

Personally, i love The Faint but at the same time i also love dropkicking them off a stage and onto the pavement outside.

If they’re new to you have a listen and feel free to download….

in anticipation of the release of the half blood prince, i recently reread harry potters mark vi and vii. i wonder what music harry and chums would listen to, apart from the weird sisters of course. he spends a lot of his time confused and unhappy:

he feels pain and anger so he probably would listen to some whiny emo like a proper angry teen – and i’m not the one with the knowledge on that front. but given the anger and pain and fear that permeates the last three books i would imagine he’d need a driving beat to keep him going while he’s on the run.

something like:

or
