Zachary Okun y Raj Gadhia, Krista Sharp y Elmer Sharp

La gente de Kora Records me envió material sobre The Fairline Parkway una banda de Washington DC, que tiene dos integrantes fundadores Zachary Okun y Raj Gadhia pero que en al última sesión de grabación se les sumaron tantos amigos que ahora describen en Myspace a su formación como ellos dos más Krista Sharp, Elmer Sharp, Ben Licciardi (que toca con ellos en vivo) “ and friends”, porque abren las puertas de su sala a quien tenga ganas de aportar. Eso es lo que hicieron cuando grabaron A Memory of Open Spaces, su segundo disco que salió el 27 de mayo.

Zachary Okun y Raj Gadhia se conocieron en verano. Raj reconoció a Zach como el chico que se sentaba atrás en la universidad de antropología y que se dormía durante las proyecciones de documentales sobre monos, despertando del profundo sueño sólo para protestar y discutir las diferencias entre los cráneos de los diferentes especimenes. Comenzaron a grabar juntos en 2002.

A Memory of Open Spaces es un disco de música tranquila, leí por ahí que lo describen como con un chilled out groove y en algún punto tiene esa especie de mood, pero es mucho más cálido que un simple disco de chill out y bastante más enérgico que un disco de música ambient. Se escucha como un pop muy suave y tranquilo.

Leí que durante la grabación de A Memory of Open Spaces (Una memoria de Espacios Abiertos) algunos amigos se unieron al proyecto. ¿Cómo afectó eso a las canciones? ¿Fueron modificadas de acuerdo al humor del momento como si el disco fuera un “espacio abierto de composición”?
Pienso que nuestros amigos definitivamente trajeron nuevas melodías o ritmos agregando partes que ni Zach ni yo podríamos haber compuesto solos. Creo que las canciones se formaron y evolucionaron diferente a cómo hubieran sido si las hubiéramos hecho sólo nosotros dos como en nuestro primer álbum. La canción Robbed Blind fue concebida con una línea de guitarra y en la mezcla final removimos la guitarra completamente. Los vientos y el piano de Krista le dieron a la canción todo lo que necesitaba. Entonces podríamos decir que el espacio abierto es una preocupación en la grabación, tratamos de no colapsar las canciones a pesar de haber sumado más integrantes a la banda y eso también puede llegar a ser un proceso de autocensura.

¿El grupo es tan calmo como suena en sus discos? Sospecho que esos inspiradores y climáticos sonidos vienen del caos.

Já, no creo que seamos muy calmos en persona. Somos un grupo ruidoso cuando estamos hablando y cuando hay instrumentos en la habitación, ¡a veces no puedes oír a ninguno claramente en el caos!. También es un lugar muy chico y cuando está todo el mundo adentro tienes que pararte en una sola pierna para tocar las campanas o en ciertos momentos yo toco la guitarra y canto en el pasillo. No es exactamente un amplio espacio abierto, y es a menudo caótico. En cuanto a nuestro show en vivo no creo que sea tan calmo como nuestro álbum. No podemos tener gente durmiéndose en el bar, es peligroso para los bebedores.

¿Recuerdan algún espacio abierto del pasado?
En realidad cuando pusimos el título pensé en las escenas de los pintores americanos de paisajes, que hablan del espíritu de exploración y expansión en el período de la historia de Estados Unidos que es referida como la era de la manifestación del destino. Pero aún hoy hay muchos lugares hermosos en nuestro país. Fui al Death Valley, en Nevada, Arizona, a principios de este año. Creo que es difícil describir adecuadamente la belleza de esos paisajes.

¿Has escuchado música argentina?
Aparte del Tango y Gotan Project, pienso que podría aprender un montón de la música argentina. Más todo el rock argentino. Pienso que podrías enseñarme algo acerca de eso.

¿Es cierto que Zach fue a la India y trajo un armonio?¿Está en el disco?
Fue a la India hace unos años y trajo varios instrumentos, la mayoría de ellos desafortunadamente se rompieron en el transporte. Por suerte todavía tenemos funcionando al armonio. No lo usamos mucho en este lote de canciones pero sí en el primer álbum. Hmm es una buena idea para nuestra próxima canción, gracias por recordarme este juguete. En realidad la última vez que estuve en la India también fui a la tienda de armonios de compras (todo el mundo necesita uno), y luego me di cuenta que no quería llevarlo por toda Europa en el camino de regreso. Es una cosa muy pesada para llevar sobre la espalda.

I read that during the recording stage of A Memory of Open Spaces many friends  joined in the project. How did that affect the songs? Were they modified according to the mood of the moment and by the contribution of each one? Is the record an “open space” of composition?

I think our friends definitely brought new melodies or rhythms in, adding parts that neither zach nor I might have written by ourselves. And I think songs took shape and evolved differently than they would have if it was just the two of us like on our first album. I think with Robbed Blind, the whole song was conceived with a guitar line, and in the final mix of the song, we actually removed that guitar entirely, as the string part, horns, and krista’s lead piano line had given the song all it needed. So I guess you could say open space was a concern in the recording—we tried not to clutter the songs, despite having added more members to the band, and that can be a process of self censorship.

Are the band so quiet like we can listen in the album? I suspect that those inspirers and climatic sounds came from the chaos.

Ha, I don’t think we’re very quiet in person. We’re a noisy bunch when we get talking, and then we get instruments in the room–sometimes you can’t hear anyone clearly in the chaos! Its also a small room and when we get everyone in there, you sometimes have to stand on one leg to play the bells, or sometimes I might even play guitar and sing in the hallway. Not exactly a wide open space, and its often chaotic. As for our live show right now, I don’t think its nearly as quiet as the album. We can’t have people falling asleep at the bar, that’s hazardous to drinkers.

Did you remember some special “open space” from the past?

I think the ‘open spaces’ I was thinking most about were rugged scenes from early American landscape painters—scenes that spoke to the spirit of exploration and expansion in the period of American history often referred to as the age of manifest destiny. But even today, there are so many beautiful places in our country, I went to death valley, nevada and arizona earlier this year, I think its difficult to adequately describe the beauty of those landscapes.

Have you listened argentinian music?

Aside from tango and gotan project, I think there is a lot I could learn about argentine music. Plus all the argentine rock. I think you could teach me a thing or two about all of it.

Is true that Zach went to India, and returned with a harmonium? How was that? Is the harmonium in the album?

Zach went to india a few years back and came back with a couple of instruments actually, most of which were smashed in transport unfortunately.  Luckily, we still had a functioning harmonium. I don’t think we used it much on this batch of songs, but we did some on the first album. Hmm. that’s a good idea for our next song—thanks for reminding me of this toy.  Actually, last time I was in India I also went harmonium shopping (everybody needs one), and then realized I didn’t want to carry it around Europe on the way back.  It’s a very heavy thing to carry on your back.

  You may recall that I reviewed a track from The Fairline Parkway, which I’d been sent by their Record Company. [see this post]

 

Well, those very nice people at The Kora Records sent me the full album to have a listen to and I have to say that “A Memory Of Open Spaces” has earned itself a place in my Playlist.

 

It’s not a lively album, quite the opposite. It’s mellow and laid-back. The sort of thing you’d play when you want to relax. The type of music to while away a long, late-night journey. The background music for a quiet night at home with friends.

 

Don’t get me wrong…you’ll find yourself tapping your foot to most of the tunes…just not leaping around or doing that silly little dance move we all do when we think no body’s watching.

 

The album title, “A Memory of Open Spaces” is very apt. All the tracks work towards building up that picture of open plains, fields of blowing corn, cool high mountains, bright dewy pastures.

 

You’re probably guessing by now that this album worked for me!

 For me, the best songs are ‘Westward Bound’  with it’s jaunty mood, ‘Hoemsteaders’ which is reasonably upbeat and ‘Robbed Blind’ with a beautiful violin back track.

Oh yeah..and then there’s ‘The Great Plain’ – an instrumental – I defy you listen to this and not conjure up images of cowboys riding gently across the prairie into a brilliant sunset.
