The new music hitting right now as far the brand new material is about as across the board as one ca

The new music hitting right now as far the brand new material is about as across the board as one can get. Them Crooked Vultures combines Grohl, John Paul Jones and Josh Homme doing epic quasi-garage rock that changes it up. Norah Jones plays out more acid while John Mayer stays with the status quo but keys in some personal trudge while keeping the guitar singing. Rihanna brings back the rear with a bit of slice, but because of recent incidents, gives her presence of mind a weight not available before.

Them Crooked Vultures – “Elephants” [Them Crooked Vultures] Using simple power chords but with change ups, this track from the new supergroup of the moment changes throughout without becoming overtly apparent. Despite this, the cut has an undeniable charge to it. Each of the players involved just loves blasting it out. The groove is there for the taking without even a thought like a dark burning roadhouse where everybody is slamming beers and dancing, sweaty into the night.

John Mayer – “All We Ever Do Is Say Goodbye” [Battle Studies] This song shows Mayer’s pop sensibilities within an Elton John progression while using an arpeggio structure he rarely uses. The song has a specific thought train almost like Aniston incarnate considering the intro lyrics but with a longing that plays very close because it works. You also get the vintage guitar like Clapton would have wanted despite a basic chorus line. The reality will get the cell phones waving.

Norah Jones – “Stuck” [The Fall] The girl goes a little trip with this bar singer ditty that feels smooth and dirty at the same time with a great elegance to it. The dreamy center of the chorus mixes aspects of country with acid jazz before amping it up with a heavy sound that heightens the feel into flux. You can see the smoke cresting in the bar with Andy Warhol chillin in the corner while a girl in silk dances.

Rihanna – “GL4″ [Rated R] The starting beat keys into a rolling song. Rihanna’s initial dark entrenching jumps her out with a sultry but confident air that gives the persona a more specific poise. The grind sound plays the club right without grooving out too much while the lyrics don’t mess with the fact that she is “down for life and love” but she and her girls “know revenge is sweet”. Girl got some edge now since the beat kicks it to the floor.

So I was watching good ol Stephen Colbert getting my fake news fix when he brought out Norah Jones.

So I was watching good ol Stephen Colbert getting my fake news fix when he brought out Norah Jones. Now I remember the first time I heard Norah was around the time of her release ‘Come Away With Me.’ It was around 3am, I was flipping through the channels and stopped on VH1 to watch the video for ‘Don’t Know Why,’ and I remember thinking to myself I hope this is a new artist. It was so good that I hoped she would be around for a while and wasn’t someone I had never heard of before that released on album and disappeared. The thing is, I loved that album but her follow ups I felt were lacking. Anyways, back to the Colbert Report. She came on and did a new song and I was in awe. What happened, I don’t know but I am glad it did. I went to her web site and listened to some more of the new songs and now know I must own this album. The best way I could describe it is if Tom Waits was born 20 some years ago as a woman he would have become Norah Jones. The sounds are dreamy and haunting her voice is (as always), amazing and her song writing is developing swimmingly. I can’t wait to her where she goes next.

Every good story has some sort of disaster. Some sort of moment where it all goes wrong. Where the perfection or the relationship is damaged, seemingly beyond repair.

God’s story is no different.

Genesis 3 is the horrible moment when God’s creation decided to walk their own way. But this part of the story is about far more than eating apples or being naked. Instead, it’s the destruction of the beginning. The destruction of the perfect relationship.

No more talking face to face. No longer called friends. Not in a beautiful and perfect home any more.

Disaster has come.

Ontario’s tourism and resort destination areas are predicting a potentially outstanding fall s

Ontario’s tourism and resort destination areas are predicting a potentially outstanding fall season. Over the last few years, Ontario tourist operators have witnessed a steady growth in business over the fall season due to many factors including the weather. Weather patterns are slowly changing with the warm summer temperatures extending well into September and October, making the fall months much more desirable to Ontario vacationers. This autumn will be no exception. Additionally, Environment Canada is predicting a warm and dry fall for Ontario this year which is welcome news to Ontario resort owners who are nearing the end of a busy summer season that has been a little cooler than predicted and unusually wet.

The good news about Ontario’s rain-soaked summer is that it creates conditions that are ideal for producing the most brilliant coloured fall foliage. Weather conditions are always a determining factor in just how colourful the leaves will be each fall. Often, summers that are unusually hot and dry put trees under a great deal of stress, resulting in leaves in the autumn that are dull and drop to the ground prematurely. This year, the trees have not been put under any stress whatsoever as the summer has been both extremely wet and a little cooler than normal. The result should be a breath-taking display of fall foliage province-wide that should extend into the entire fall season.

Ontario is already well known for its spectacular fall colours which naturally draws tourists. However, the changing leaves coupled with the province’s abundance of activities such as fall fairs, special fall festivals, and events in many charming tourist destination areas, makes Ontario a sought after vacation destination. Additionally, many resorts offer a wide array of attractive and reasonably priced fall colour getaway packages for people who want to take advantage of everything this special time of year has to offer.

Many resort owners believe that stunning displays of brilliant colour are not the only reason tourists choose to vacation in Ontario during the fall months. Many people enjoy a vacation in the fall because it is less crowded than during the peak summer months. In addition, reduced rates in the off-season also provide an added incentive to plan a fall getaway. As well, the high price of gas will continue to discourage people from traveling far from home. Since many resorts are within a short drive of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), an Ontario resort vacation this fall is not only enjoyable but economical too.

Sometimes there are movies that because of high expectations, don’t quite live up to the hype,

Sometimes there are movies that because of high expectations, don’t quite live up to the hype, therefore people and critics shrug it off as a failure. There are also some movies that people just pan or shrug off based on it’s cast or premise. Although there are some occassions where I’ve had such thoughts, I like to give every movie a chance. There are times when I regret it but there are times when there is a true gem that most people just don’t care for without even seeing it, or they just don’t like it for the reasons I’ve mentioned.

My list is compiled of movies that “failed” due to high expectations as well as those that most think are truly horrible. I love all of these movies and I don’t feel ashamed for doing so.

Here are my top 10 most underrated movies of the decade.

10. Australia

Baz Luhrman | 2008

I guess that after the greatness of Moulin Rouge! there were high expectations for Lurhrman’s next project (mine were definitely like that). When it was announced that he would do an epic romance, I guess people thought that he was going to try to bring back the sub-genre, when in fact it was just an homage to those movies. Most people didn’t see it as the latter, which is why they hated it. However, there were a few of us who saw it for what it was and we loved it. The romance is great, the cinematography is amazing, the score fits the story, and the performances are great. Yes, the script had problems, but they can be easily forgiven thanks to the rest of the production.

9. The Fall

Tarsem | 2008

This movie originally played in the Toronto International Film Festival in 2006 and it was panned, with most critics calling it an inferior copy of anther festival darling from that year, Pan’s Labyrinth. Two year later, it was released independently to bad reviews. There were a few critics like Roger Ebert who actually saw it for what it was, a visual treat supported by a small story. It is a gorgeous movie filled with remarkable images and featuring great performances by Lee Pace and Catinka Untaru. It may not have a very deep and thought provoking story, but the story confined with the magnificent production makes for a great experience.

8. Across the Universe

Julie Taymor | 2007

Most people who dislike this mostly complain about how “misused” the songs by The Beatles were, about how little story there is to support those historic lyrics. I guess their love for the songs did not allow them to see the beautiful production, the great direction, the great performances, the good arrangements of the songs. They missed out on all the fun.

7. Knowing

Alex Proyas | 2009

Nicolas Cage had not had a good decade. For every Lord of War ,The Weatherman, and Adaptation there are two National Treasures, one Next, one Bangkok Dangerous, one Ghost Rider, and one The Wicker Man. So I guess that when this came out the presence of Cage made most people dismiss it as another one of his attempts to become an action star so late in his career. However, the movie is not just Nicolas Cage. It was directed by one of the most interesting directors out there, the script, despite it’s huge flaws, had some interesting ideas that Proyas takes the most advatage of, and it also features Cage’s best performances since 2005 when he had both Lord of War and The Weatherman

6. Memoirs of a Geisha

Rob Marshall | 2005

The book on which this is based is amazing, so there is no way that the movie was going to live up to it. Despite that, I believe Rob Marshall did a great job in translating the story visually into the screen it is one of the best produced movies of the decade. Yes, the script is rather bad, but the behind-the-scenes people and the actors rise above the material. Should you expect a fast-paced movie? No, you should expect a slow-burning experience and take everything in to enjoy the great ending.

5. The Life Aquatic With Steve Zizzou

Wes Anderson | 2004

It may not be Wes Anderson’s best, but I’d say that it is his most interesting, visually, and it has some really funny moments, as well as plenty of heart felt ones. Plus, it sports Bill Murray’s best post-Lost in Translation performance, Angelica Houston, Owen Wilson, Willem Dafoe, Cate Blanchett, and a song by Sigur Ros. What more can you ask for?

4. Monster-in-Law

Robert Luketic | 2005

Does it have the most original story? No. Is It well written and directed? No. So why do I think it is underrated? Well, it is because of the actresses. Jane Fonda and Jennifer Lopez have great chemistry together, and that alone makes almost every joke work. Plus, there is the always-reliable Wanda Sykes and the always reliable assistant ready with a one liner for every situation.

3. The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

Garth Jennings | 2005

Based on the books by Douglas Adams, I think the movies does a great job of translating the humor, which is not the humor that most people are used to. I does not have jokes that give you belly laughs, but the kind of humor that makes you go, “that’s funny.” Martin Freeman, Mos Def, Zooey Deschanel, and Sam Rockwell are perfectly cast and make everything work.

2. Speed Racer

The Wachowskis | 2008

“It looks like a videogame and it has no story” was the biggest complaint I heard about this movie. This was never supposed to be the next Matrix, it was supposed to be a movie for the whole family to enjoy. And that was what we got. It has a simple good vs. evil, family always sticks together story, combined with great, groundbreaking visual effects, and good performances to boot.

1. The Fountain

Darren Aronofsky | 2005

I guess the main reason why most people don’t like it is because of it’s non-linear narrative. I loved it from the first time I saw it, and has only gotten better with repeat viewings. Hugh Jackman gives what is his best performance to date, and Rachel Weiz is also quite good. Some parts are off-putting and you do wonder what part is actually happening, but that is only part of the beauty of it. This is definitely one of the best movies of the decade.

There are my 10 most underrated movies of the decade. Feel free to offer your opinion in the comments section.

“Foal language” chortles Pigeon merrily.

The long face lengthens and everything gets a bit Wyatt Urp.

“Do you know who I am?”

Sweet. We’ve been waiting for this very question for months dear reader.

“Are you Mark E Smith from the Fall?”

“Well, no…”

“Then the Pigeon doesn’t give a fuck. Darling.”

“Its my birthday”.

The last refuge of every ketamine-drenched, new media cunt in existence, ladies and gentlemen: its my birthday. No wonder they’re in the creative industries whilst the likes of the Pigeon slave away lubricating their tosh valves with branded lager.

The horse mask goes on to compare us to Louis Walsh (apparently a chubby, mythical beast of Hibernian folk law), tell us we have no people skills (true) and threaten to never darken our doors again until we are handed our P45. Last seen, abandoned by his pals, decorating the bonnet of a disappointingly slow-moving black cab about twenty metres down the street from the Pigeon’s place of employment.

And we haven’t even mentioned the Latins who like to- POINT- AT- OUR- CHEST. And tell us how we lack people skills. On this point, we concede. We honestly do.

The bar trade ladies and gentlemen: where the pigeon-person-who’s shitting on whom index is reversed.

I got a comment on one of my posts this week from a guy in Texas. It made me realize I need to be comfortable with strangers reading about my life. But then it dawned on me, that’s the whole point of what I’m doing: telling strangers about my life.

I clicked on his name, which took me to his site. He described himself as a Christian grad-student with an interest in Charles Bukowski. I was surprised, I liked what he wrote. I never thought I’d enjoy a poem that dramatizes a scene from the Bible, but I did.

Still, having contact with people on the Internet spooks me. I am Internet Shy. I don’t know why, because the only relationship I’ve had on the Internet was really good. I traded several handwritten letters and mix tapes with a guy from Liverpool for 10 years. It wasn’t love, but a common interest in The Fall.

He said he mailed a photo of himself to The White Stripes, and they actually wrote back. He had been to the beach and passed out drunk in the sun, and the rolls of his fat left white stripes across his stomach. I guess the underside of the rolls were protected by the sun, so it created a pattern of white stripes against the red. He thought they could use it for the next album cover.

The thing about sharing your life with strangers is to remember, they only want to know something about you that means something to them.

More than once this week I’ve had people say they’re done with Facebook because they’re tired of hearing the same story about a friend who’s just returned from a walk with the dog. Strangers need more. Friends do, too.

Oceanlook.
