Jaren geleden was ik niet zo’n heel goeie student, en dus had ik altijd tweede zit. Enfin, toch zeker in mijn kandidaturen. Ik slaagde er steevast in om tegen de blok hopeloos verliefd te zijn, en natuurlijk kwam er dan van studeren weinig in huis. Joy Division ontdekken, Jotie ‘t Hoofd lezen, dat wel ja. Het was een ander soort opvoeding.

Maar in de zomers van dat diepe midden van de jaren negentig, zat ik dus twee jaar op rij een paar weken te blokken bij mijn grootmoeder in het Henegouwse Dergnaux, net over de taalgrens bij Ronse. Het totale isolement, al had ik tegen de tweede keer wel al geleerd om op haar aftandse tv MTV te programmeren. Vandaar mijn enthousiasme voor Backstreet Boys’ “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)”; het was gewoon de beste van de crappy singles die er toen werden gedraaid (u had toch niet gedacht dat ik voor “Wannabe” van The Spice Girls was gevallen? Dààr zat ik met verbazing naar te kijken).

Ik had ook OK Computer mee, maar dat doet iets minder ter zaken. Dit gaat over TV. ’s Avonds viel er immers weinig anders te doen dan wat televisie kijken, al dan niet samen met grootmoeder, en zo viel mijn oog op “To Play The King” dat op het toenmalige TV Twee liep; een Brits politiek drama, dat me van bij minuut één nogal in zijn greep had.

Ik herinner me dat ik het jaar daarop de drie boeken van Michael Dobbs waarop de serie (en de prequel House Of Cards en de sequel The Final Cut) waren gebaseerd uit de bib van Leuven heb ontleend. Die was toen overigens nog gevestigd waar nu het hypermoderne museum M is gebouwd, maar waar je toen de Engelse boeken nog op een soort van zolderverdiepje moest gaan zoeken. Spannende stuff, maar sindsdien niet echt meer aan gedacht.

Tot ik eind deze zomer de dvdbox met de drie reeksen (drie maal vier afleveringen) in de Fnac zag liggen, toen ik tevergeefs een verjaardagscadeau voor L. zocht. Geen moment getwijfeld, meegenomen, L. niet kunnen overtuigen om mee te kijken, en dus werd dit nachtelijk voer.

Stel je voor dat Shakespeare in deze tijden leefde, en zijn intriges over macht, ontrouw en verraad gesitueerd zou hebben in de hoogste echelons van de Britse regering. Dat is ongeveer de setting. Francis Urquheart is een gewaardeerde maar aartscynische backbencher van de Tory’s, op het moment dat Margaret Thatcher net van het toneel is verdwenen. Maar zoals dat met backbenchers gaat, brandt hij van ambitie, en vanuit zijn functie (hij is “chief whip”, maar ik vind geen afdoende term om dat naar een Belgische situatie te vertalen) heeft hij de mogelijkheid om hier en daar wat touwtjes te bewegen, daar een ego te masseren. Door het manipuleren van een jonge journaliste (“you might very well say that, Mattie, but I couldn’t possibly comment”) slaagt hij er in de opvolger van Thatcher tot ontslag te dwingen, en wordt hij aan het eind van de eerste serie prime minister. Dat hij daarvoor even tot moord is moet overgaan, deert hem niet in het minst.

En zo gaat dat verder in To Play The King, waar de nieuwe koning zich plots als een progressief gaat gedragen en ondanks de fletse oppositie dan maar zelf voor tegengas tegen het harteloze kapitalisme van Urquheart probeert te zorgen. Genoeg stof voor conflict, maar in The Final Cut (u dacht toch niet dat ik hier àlles ging vertellen?) komt hoogmoed uiteindelijk dan toch voor de val in een cut-throatfinale.

Natuurlijk is het gedateerd. Er zijn momenten, zeker in de tweede reeks, dat het wat sloom werd. De serie dateert uit de eerste helft van de jaren negentig en dat merk je. Het acteren, de montage, is van een bedaard niveau dat al lang niet meer gangbaar is. Maar wat een genietbaar acteerwerk. Zeker Urquheart is smullen; Ian Richardson geeft de harteloze schurk zo’n charme mee dat het onweerstaanbaar wordt. Hij is de te haten figuur, maar net als van Jan Decleirs Richard III in Ten Oorlog is zijn onversneden slechtheid aanstekelijk. En wanneer het er echt om begint te spannen in The Final Cut gieren de zenuwen toch wel een beetje door de keel.

Dobbs putte voor zijn verhaal over macht en corruptie rijkelijk uit Macbeth en dat Richard III, en creëert zo een eigentijdse variant op de koningsdrama’s. Geweldig hoe de sfeer van het Britse parlement, de verbale duels, worden gebracht. Zelfs al zijn de plots zijn niet om van achterover te slaan, dit is meer dan hoogst entertainend. Hé, als u belooft er lief voor te zijn, mag u ze wel eens lenen hoor!

Το αποφασίσαμε…

Φέτος θα πάμε στις Νύχτες Πρεμιέρας. Πέρσι δεν πήγαμε γιατί είχε κόσμο και δεν έστρωναν καλά τα τζην μας. Αυτή τη χρονιά μας ευλόγησε ο Θεός να έχουμε τσάκιση και να μυρίζουν πάστρα. Το φορέσαμε και ξεκινήσαμε…

Χμμμ.. Η Παναγία η Χρυσοβαλάντισα μου έστειλε ένα αγόρι που μου κέρασε όλα τα εισιτήρια.. Το χρυσό μου, απο τον ουρανό να το βρει…

Προμηθευτήκαμε νερά, κοκα κολες, νάτσος διαιτητικά, άνετα παπούτσια και φτάσαμε στο Αττικόν.

Last Drive…

Ντοκυμαντέρ για τους U2 (Hellowww,για τους Last Drive!) απο τον Δημήτρη Κοτσέλη (ένδοξο απόφοιτο Λεοντείου). Δεν είχα ιδέα οτι είχαν παίξει και στο εξωτερικό. Δεν είχα ιδέα για τους Last Drive. Δεν είναι κακό. Τα φασόλια κάνουν κακό. Ήχος πανκ-γκαραζ-ροκ-μεταλ τα πάντα όλα. Το αστείο κομμάτι της υπόθεσης είναι οτι ο τραγουδιστής (που τραγουδάει μόνο στα αγγλικά) τόσα χρόνια δεν έχει βελτιώσει στο ελάχιστο την προφορά του.

Οnce in a Lifetime-Γιάννης Πετρίδης…

Η ζωή του Γιάννη Πετρίδη. Και όχι μόνο. Αρκετή μουσική, μπόλικη χούντα, Κωστόπουλος μέχρι αηδίας όπως και Ευθυμίου (υπουργομυτόγκας).

Μάθαμε τί τρώει ο Πετρίδης, τί μουσικη ακούει (εχω την εντύπωση οτι ακούει μόνο Chic), τί έκανε ο μπαμπάς του αλλά δεν μάθαμε γιατί δεν ακούστηκε το όνομα του Κώστα Ζουγρή. Και για όσους δεν ξέρουν, ο κύριος Ζουγρής είναι ο άνθρωπος που βάζει (βοηθάει αν θέλετε) τα κομμάτια στο ραδιόφωνο. Το δεξί του χέρι, που λένε οι θείοι μου στην Σικελία. Πουθενά Ζουγρής. Σκεφτείτε οτι πάντα τους μπερδεύω (ένα άτομο δεν είναι αυτοί?) .

Ο Πετρίδης ξέρει απο μουσική αλλά όχι απο λογιστικά όπως και ο ίδιος είπε… χμμμ…

Το κακό στην εποχή των ηρώων…

Μια απο τις πρώτες κριτικές στο internet (ναιιι και πάλι το BTM κατάφερε αυτή τη πρωτιά, μετά την αποκαλυψή του οτι αυτό ήταν το πρώτο μπλογκ που έφερε στο φώς το Beggin’!).

Λοιπόν, αφού έγινα κουρία (διότι ήξερα…) φτάνουμε στο σινεμά έχοντας δίπλα μας όλο το καστ του “Κακού ΙΙ”. Η χαρά της κουτσομπόλας.

Το Κακό ΙΙ, έγινε ταινία καθώς το πρώτο Κακό, ήταν μια προσπάθεια για κάτι… Η συνταγή πέτυχε στο ΙΙ και προσέφερε γέλιο αλλά και αηδία. Έντερα στην Πανεπιστημίου, η γκόμενα με τα σύκα, ο μπίχτης και αθάνατος ταρίφας, ο μάγειρας και ένα σωρό άλλοι…

Πρώτη φορά είδα σπλατερ με ανοιχτά τα μάτια!

Δεν λέω άλλα! Δεν είμαι κριτικός! Εγώ το βγάζω το μουστάκι μου!

Syd barret, pues sí, este muchachito estaba en drogas jajaa y se creó un mito y una fama enorme y exagerada. Lider al principio de Pink Floyd, ok genial. Pero no me muero por escucharlo, no creo que haya pasado de la primera fase de creador y por meritos propios se disolvió del grupo y seguro luego de su propia vida…para no haber vuelto a aparecer es porque realmente se tostó. La locura a veces es cosa seria (si te limita en la vida podemos decir que no es positiva).

Roger Waters, siempre tan positivo… luego de separarse de Pink Floyd y del Muro no paró de hacer muritos, toda su música se encaminó en la misma dirección, más blues, más electrónica, más actual en letras, como sea, muy encasillado…bueno, a mi me encanta, es cuestión de gustos, como siempre. Conceptual hasta la muerte, cada CD ha sido una nueva versión con un nuevo enfoque… A mi parecer ha hecho de sus traumas un gran negocio.

Algún día conversando con un amigo me hablaba del sufrimiento de Waters…y yo pensando que no puede ser tanto si has hecho un buen negocio de tus problemas…cual locura o cual dolor puede ser tan grande si has tenido tiempo de pensarla, escribirla, musicalizarla y hacer plata con esto?

Bueno, no soy el mayor simpatizante de Syd y terminé hablando muy bien de él y sí me considero un ciego creyente de Roger Waters y acabo destrozándole su medio de vida jajaja

Este CD es sobre las pesadillas, se divide en minutos y los viajes pidiendo auto stop…genial. Era la época en que siempre salía en las entrevistas y videos con la cara en alguna sombra (mejor que una máscara). Siempre pesimista.

Ahora sobre el consumismo y su visión positiva de las cosas. Obviamente.

Bueno, la comparación  de genios es sobre lo que significa hacerse el loco y vivir de esto y otra es estar realmente loco. Lo primero puede ser cuestionable pero es parte del Show y este debe continuar, lo segundo no pasa de dar tristeza y te mueres en el incógnito y con suerte te conviertes en una leyenda…

Πέρα των milf, gilf, cumshot και των λοιπών γλαφυρών οριοθετήσεων στο πάνθεον της εμπνευσμένης πορνό ορολογίας, η τιτλοφορία insect αποδεικνύεται ιδιαίτερα δημοφιλής στους θεατές με πιο ιδιαίτερα γούστα ή, αν προτιμάται, στους σινεφίλ θεατές hardcore ερωτικών ταινιών που αρέσκονται σε ένα κάποιο υποτυπώδες storyline. Ένα τέτοιο φιλμ, το αμερικανικό “Taboo” της δεκαετίας του ’70, γνώρισε κάμποσες cult  συνέχειες όπου θείες, ανήψια, μητριές, κόρες, πατεράδες, ξαδέρφια και αδέρφια έγιναν κουλουβάχατα, αποτάσσοντας τους όποιους ηθικούς και συγγενικούς φραγμούς επεξηγεί η φροϋδική και λοιπές ψυχολογικές θεωρήσεις.

Στα καθ’ ημάς, κάτι ανάλογο πήγε ξώφαλτσα να συμβεί το 1974 στο φιλμ “Σπίτι Στους Βράχους”. Μολονότι μια δευτεράντζα κόπια της Μπέτυς Αρβανίτη βρέθηκε στο πρόσωπο της ντουμπλαρισμένης Bente Borsum, η θέαση του σκηνοθέτη έγυρε προς ένα άχαρο ατμοσφαιρικό δράμα. Έτσι καταδίκασε το μυστικιστικό τοπίο και τις θρησκευτικές τελετές των νησιωτών σε μια επίπεδη απεικόνιση μερικών σοφτ ενσταντανέ της μητριάς με το γιο (Χρήστος Σπυρόπουλος) του πλούσιου συζύγου της (χαιτοπερουκοφόρος Ανδρέας Μπάρκουλης) εν μέσω μερικών ψευτοενοχικών οιδοιπόδειων διαλόγων, αντί να δραματοποιήσει ένα βουκολικό sexploitation εκμεταλλευόμενος την σκηνική τελετουργία στο έπακρο.

Αντ’ αυτού, ο Λίνος Κόκκοτος έπαιξε πάνω στο τοπίο και στις εικόνες των σφαχταριών και των αναστενάρηδων, ως εκφάνσεις συνέχειας και ενσωμάτωσης της αρχαιότητας στην λαϊκή παράδοση. Έτσι, ο κατά τ’ άλλα λαϊκός συνθέτης, έμπλεξε το αρχαίο σαντούρι με το Hammond, το τσέλο με τις ερινύες όπως ηχούν απ’ τη φωνή της Γεωργίας Λόνγκου, με ενορχηστρωτικές διαφοροποιήσεις που θυμίζουν κατά διαστήματα το εγχείρημα του Μαρκόπουλου στον «Θάνατο Του Αλέξανδρου», αλλά με μια σαφή μελωδική βάση αναφερόμενη στην αρχαιοελληνική δραματουργία.

Έξω από νόρμες, εκτεινόμενο μεταξύ της jazz, της πειραματικής συμφωνίας και της αρχέγονης ελληνικής φόρμας, το σαφέστατα ιδιαίτερο soundtrack παρέμενε ακυκλοφόρητο έως το 2004, όταν η ακόμη ενεργή Potfleur το πρωτοκυκλοφόρησε σε 300 βινυλιακά αντίτυπα, συγκαταλέγοντας το στο ιδιαίτερο ρόστερ των κυκλοφοριών της. Λίγα χρόνια μετά, η εφημερίδα Πρώτο Θέμα κυκλοφόρησε το φιλμ εντάσσοντάς το αντιστοίχως στην πλειάδα των θαυμαστών στιγμών του ελληνικού κινηματογράφου που έχουν συνοδεύσει τα κιτρινισμένα φύλλα της. Έκαστος στο είδος του και στην αισθητική του.

Ότι κι αν θαρρεί κανείς για την απαγόρευση του καπνίσματος στους, κατά το νόμο, δημόσιους χώρους, μπορεί να εστιάσει σε κάποιες θετικές απόρροιες της εφαρμογής του. Ας πούμε πως ένας μανιώδης καπνιστής πρόκειται να ταξιδέψει με το τραίνο καρβουνιάρη για κάποια πόλη κάτωθεν της Κορίνθου. Πλέον, από την 1^η Ιουλίου και εφεξής, τα προκείμενα ενδύματα της καρνταρόμπας του ευεργετούνται για τις ώρες της διαδρομής και ο ίδιος ξεκλέβει μερικά λεπτά παράτασης της μείζονος ή ελάσσονος σημασίας ζωής του. Άσε που ενδέχεται αυτά τα λεπτά να αποδειχθούν δυνάμει πολλαπλάσια σε κάποιες περιπτώσεις.

Ο Donald Sutherland κάπνιζε τα ασπρόφιλτρα αμερικάνικα τσιγάρα του σε ένα λονδρέζικο βαγόνι με προορισμό το Bradley, το 1964. Υποδυόταν ένα γιατρό που θα μάθαινε πως όταν επέστρεφε στην Αμερική θα ανακάλυπτε πως η γαλλίδα γυναίκα του ήταν βαμπίρ. Δίπλα του ο Cristopher Lee, είχε ενδεδυθεί το ύφος ενός κριτικού τέχνης που ντροπιασμένος από τις επικρίσσεις ενός ζωγράφου θα κατέφευγε σε ένα έγκλημα που γρήγορα θα το μετάνιωνε. Ο Neil McCallum, ένας αρχιτέκτονας που θα πάλευε με ένα βαμπίρ, και ο Alan Freeman ένας οικογενειάρχης που επιστρέφοντας απ’ τις διακοπές θα μάχονταν τη νοημοσύνη ενός ανθρωποφάγου φυτού, πλαισίωναν τη θέση του Roy Castle, ενός τζαζ μουσικού που θα έκανε το λάθος να μετουσιώσει τους ήχους voodoo τελετών σε jazz ρυθμούς.

Όλα αυτά τα «θα» αποκαλύπτονταν από μια τράπουλα ταρώ, ονόματι House Of Horrors, που κρατούσε ανά χείρας ο αγνώριστος Peter Cushing, ο γιατρός Schreck για τους γερμανομαθείς, ο γιατρός Terror για τους κάτοχους lower. Ήταν 1964, όταν άρχισε να γυρίζεται το φιλμ “Dr Terrors House Of Horrors” από την Amicus, την εταιρεία παραγωγής των Milton Subotsky και Max J Rosenberg που βάλθηκαν, απ’ τα μέσα των sixties έως τα τέλη των seventies, με λίγα χρήματα και μέσα, να εισάγουν horror movies στη Βρετανία.

Έξι εβδομάδες κράτησαν τα γυρίσματα για αυτά τα 98 λεπτά που βρέθηκαν στις οθόνες της Βρετανίας το Φλεβάρη του ’65 μέχρις ότου να εξοριστούν στη Φιλανδία μιας και οι αναμενόμενοι θεατές δεν έσπευσαν. Τα χρόνια προσέδωσαν cult status τόσο στο φιλμ όσο και σ’ εκείνο το κομμάτι της μελλοντολογικής πρόβλεψης της θλιβερής έκβασης της ζωής των χαρακτήρων του βαγονιού, όπου ο Roy Castle, ο τζαζ τρομπετίστας “Biff” Bailey, ήχησε ντουμπλαρισμένος απ’ το κουιντέτο του Tubby Hayes και συγκεκριμένα απ’ τον βρετανό Shake Keane.

Η ιστορία στο πανί έλεγε πως ο χωρατατζής οργανοπαίχτης ταξίδεψε μέχρι τις Δυτικές Ινδίες όπου παρακολούθησε μια voodoo τελετή. Ο φύλαρχος εκείνης της φυλής αντιλαμβανόμενος την παρουσία του, τού διεμήνυσε άκρως γλαφυρά το λόγο που δεν έπρεπε να αντιγράφει τους ήχους σε παρτιτούρες. Εκείνος βάλθηκε να κάνει τους κεφαλιού του και επιστρέφοντας στην πατρίδα ενσωμάτωσε τους παγανιστικούς χαιρετισμούς στη βρετανική jazz των mid-sixties. Ο Tubby Hayes πήγε στα Shepperton Studios του Middlesex στις 20 Ιουνίου του 1964 και ηχογράφησε τρία κομμάτια. Το “Bailey’s Blues”, το GeorgieFame-κο “Give Me Love” με τη φωνή του Kenny Lynch και το “Voodoo” το κομμάτι που μόλις ήχησε στο κλαμπ της ταινίας ο british modal άνεμος βάλθηκε να σηκώσει τα πάντα, προοικονομώντας την τύχη του φιλμικού δημιουργού του.

45 χρόνια μετά, για πρώτη φορά και σε 666 κόπιες, ο Jonny Trunk κυκλοφορεί σε ένα ήδη εξαντλημένο επτάρι τα 3 κομμάτια για εκείνο το κομμάτι της σπονδυλωτής ιστορίας που εξελίχθηκε στο βαγόνι με προορισμό το θάνατο. Ένα 45αρι που μόλις πρωτοκόπηκε του έλαχε να κακοτυπωθεί άμα τη γεννέσει του. Δυσοιώνη άραγε η κατοχή του; Πιθανότατα αυτό να το ορίζει ο αριθμός του. Όπως συμβαίνει με τα εισιτήρια των τραίνων και το πλήθος των καταχρασθέντων ρουφηξιών νικοτίνης.

El sonido holofónico fue desarrollado en 1980 por el argentino Hugo Zuccarelli, aplicando este tipo de escucha. En 1983, Humberto Gabrielle Maggi, junto a su hermano Maurizio, crearon el “holophone”.  Hugo Zuccarelli quien era seguidor de Pink Floyd los convence de grabar su albúm “The final cut” en sonido holofónico.

La grabacion de este sonido se lleva a cabo mediante un dummy en forma de cabeza en la cual se situán dos micrófonos en el lugar que deberían estar los oídos .

Otro grupo que ha realizado esta grabación es Pearl Jam, el disco en el que lleva el nombre del tipo de escucha “Binaural” , en el comienzo de la canción  ”Rival ” es donde más se puede apreciar.

Algunas recomendaciones para escucharlas es que lo hagan con auriculares estéreo y que cierren los ojos para disfrutar de esta gran  experiencia, que nuevamente me llevo a pensar lo sorprendente que es el funcionamiento del cerebro.

Η επανέκδοση λοιπόν σε διπλό dvd του πρώτου και καλύτερου Παρασκευή και 13 που κυκλοφόρησε λίγες μέρες πριν δεν θα μπορούσε να αφήσει ασυγκίνητο τον γραφόντα που ακόμα τον στοιχειώνει εκείνο το μουσικό θέμα του Harry Manfredini. Η πορτοκαλάδα είναι στη θέση της, οι τρελοί μακριά, οι παππούδες πεθαμένοι και ο Jason Voorhees κρυμμένος παντού στην κατασκήνωση του Crystal Lake!!!

The Final Cut a requiem for the post war dream by roger waters… performed by pink floyd.

The Final Cut… Pink Floyd’s first and only album without Richard Wright, and the last with Roger Waters.

I was just listening to one of my favorite albums (The Final Cut by Pink Floyd) and came across this. I thought it was worth sharing.

“The Fletcher Memorial Home” is a song by Roger Waters, performed by Pink Floyd. The song appears on their 1983 album, The Final Cut. It is the eighth track on the album, and is arranged between “Get Your Filthy Hands Off My Desert” and “Southampton Dock”. It was performed live by Roger Waters for the first time in 2006. The song is also featured on the Pink Floyd compilation Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd.

Well, so much for a regular update on the status of my 101 Things list.  I haven’t even been very good at keeping up the list here at the site.  I did go back and make some updates, though – so here’s what’s new with 101 Things:

#1: Call one friend a month just to catch up
I’ve done a fairly decent job of keeping up on this one, making some intentional effort to connect with friends the good-old fashioned way over the phone.  So far, three months and at least three phone calls.

#20: Read the Bible in its entirety
Thanks to seminary classes that require a fairly heavy amount of Bible-reading, I’ve been keeping up with this one.  So far: Matthew, Mark, John and Galatians (all for classes), and Philippians (during my silent retreat at Mowana)

#30: Attend 30 On-Turf Youth Events
Three PSHS varsity basketball games, one community league indoor soccer game, and a spaghetti dinner sponsored by the PSHS volleyball teams.

#43: Complete the One Hundred Pushups Challenge
I began this program at the same time as the Two Hundred Situps Challenge.  After four weeks of the program, I am currently able to do 32 consecutive pushups.  I’m hoping to be able to do 100 by the time the next few weeks are over!

#47: Tackle the Tower
Finished!  February 7th Scott and I joined a group from PLC to Tackle the Tower for Ronald McDonald House.  It may not have been my best athletic performance to date, but I did it nonetheless!

#49: Complete the 200 Situps Challenge
Finished!  After completing only four weeks of the six-week challenge, I was able to do 210 crunches on 4/5/09.  I will be finishing the last two weeks of the program and then maintaining by doing a minimum of 200 crunches three times per week.

#52: Read and Finish 101 Books
I’ve definitely been keeping busy with this one – between reading for classes and a voracious appetite for personal reading that I’ve had lately, my list now includes the following titles:

#53: Spend an entire day in silence
Finished!  In fact, I spent two entire days in silence while on a personal silent retreat at Camp Mowana from March 22nd through 24th.

#54: Watch 101 movies I have never seen before
Added to the last list are: Wall-E, The Final Cut, and Down With Love

#82: Go one week without logging into Facebook
Finished!  And beyond a week, since I gave up Facebook for Lent, it has currently been 41 days since I was last on Facebook.

#88: Spend at least 15 days at Camp Mowana
Two down, 13 more to go!  I’m definitely hoping to make a few more silent retreats down to Mowana during this 1001 days, and hopefully a few trips with the youth group and this goal will be more than met!

Οι “άδοξοι μπάστερδοι” του Tarantino είναι και επίσημα εδώ! Η καινούρια ταινία του enfant terrible του Hollywood, είναι πλέον έτοιμη και μάλλον θα προλάβει και το φεστιβάλ των Καννών. Το σενάριο υποτίθεται οτι χωρίζεται σε κεφάλαια και ακολουθεί 2 ιστορίες οι οποίες στο τέλος διασταυρώνονται. Πάντως η συνταγή περιλαμβάνει τις γνωστές εμμονές του Quentin (αίμα, βια, εκδίκηση, γαμιστερό soundtrack), όπως το έθεσε και ο ίδιος “σπαγγέτι γουέστερν του 2ου Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου”. Στην Ελλάδα μάλλον θα προβληθεί από το ερχόμενο φθινόπωρο, αλλά πάρτε μια γεύση από το trailer της ταινίας που μόλις κυκλοφόρησε.

The Final Cut is the highly anticipated follow up to The Wall and what many regard as a low-grade b-side album, but this has to be the pinnacle of Pink Floyd’s catalogue. The opening track The Post War Dream lays the concept of the album out on the table, war, politics and grief.

Throughout the album bassist and songwriter Roger Waters’ voice is the one that is heard while guitarist Dave Gilmour only delivers backing vocals on Not Now John> It was through this period when the two band leaders’ strong personalities were clashing. Keyboardist and founding member Rick Wright was fired before the recording began and tension was high. Gilmour and drummer Nick Mason have said that they were in constant disagreement with Waters who was obsessed with being in control of everything.

And rightly so, as this may even be construed as a Waters solo album, which was performed by Pink Floyd. Many Floyd fans would rank this at the lowest in their list of greatest Floyd albums due to the creative control that Waters had over the album. But to others (including me) that’s exactly why this is their greatest work and why it does, in one disc, a much better job of what The Wall attempted to do in two.

The music itself is fairly simple if even basic, but it’s the simplicity that amplifies the effect of Gilmour’s solos and presence, or the feeling as the orchestra swells up and dissipates over us or when the saxophone rips out an emotional solo on a track like The Gunner’s Dream.

The album is dripping with the theme of War, in particular the Falkland’s and WWII. The writing about Margaret Thatcher does little to hide Waters political and even moral stance on war as he writes about his late father who died in WWII and the others who died have died through war. Throughout the album Waters condemns war, and tyrants like some of the residents in The Fletcher Memorial Home.

The Final Cut is defiantly the most personal writing from Waters, the most tense and dramatic album they’ve ever put in a sleeve, and it’s this that reinforces the most effective and key element of its music, the lyrics. If you’re looking for something to truly listen to and absorb and appreciate then you will listen this, Waters’ finest hour.

This is one of the most bonechilling albums I have listened to for a very long time.  Now I am a huge Pink Floyd fan, I always have been.  The music has a certain soul to it.  It is not the most technically difficult music, but there is so much soul in the lyrics and melody.  I watch The Wall at quite a young age, and didn’t really fully understand the significance of the film.  It is an outcry to the state of the world.

There is a track in the film that doesn’t appear on the album; When The Tigers Broke Free. If it wasn’t for a friend I would never have found this track.  Well, for those of you wondering, it is the track when the the little boy picks up his fathers gun.  It is the most beautiful song.

But I digress.  This album contains very simple guitar riffs and a simple drum beat, but the fact of the matter is that this still remains my top album for the month of February.  Whenever I listen to The Final Cut, I get the feeling that this band has tapped into the emotions of all around them.  The brass section of When The Tigers Broke Free, gives me chills everytime.

For those of you looking for an album that has meaning, this is definitely the one to have a look at..  It may be oldish, produced in 1983, but it is still a great album!

I am sitting in my flat, which is now clean, listening to The Final Cut by Pink Floyd.  Now I am not sure how many of you know The Wall (the film not the album, although that is next on my list of things to listen to).  There are two tracks that appear in the film, but not on the album, one of them is When the Tigers Broke Free.  It is a bone chilling album.  But this possibly is not the greatest music to be listening to in the mood I am currently in.  I am stuck in a limbo, with no idea of what to do.  Tomorrow I am going to go into the office, and either things are going to be different or I am going to have to start looking for a new position somewhere.

Let us rewind about 9 hours.  I had it out with my boss today.  I sat him down and explained to him all my concerns and worries that I currently have in my job, the largest being that of the MD.  Well, he backed the MD up all the way, that is until I told him I was on the brink of leaving.  He changed his tack pretty quickly, but I am not sure things will change even now.  He is going to be talking to the MD, but we will see what happens in the future.  Just when I got to the overseas trips part of the conversation we were conveniently interupted and he did mention we would speak about it again, but avoided me for the rest of the day!  I am not sure if I can handle that.

Anyway, I think I am going to start yet another blog, and hopefully I can get all you my loyal readers into reading the blog.  I will post a link to the site as soon as I have it up and running.
