When I took my dog out today, a song I hadn’t heard in ages came up on my Zune (yes, I have a Zune. Please reserve judgment): “Whistle For the Choir” by The Fratellis. As I walked among the orange-red leaves, I thought about how much I loved this song, and this band, when I first heard them in London in early 2007.

I dare you to resist the charms of “Chelsea Dagger,” an infectious, boot-stomping romp of a rock tune:

The point is, while I still unabashedly love The Fratellis’s first album, Costello Music, I never really gave them a chance after that. I bought their second effort, Here We Stand, listened to it once or twice, and promptly forgot about it.

I know I’m not alone in favoring a beloved band’s first release, but I’m guilty of doing it over and over again. I thought today about all the artists, especially my beloved Brits, that I abandoned post-debut: The Fratellis, Lily Allen, The Kooks. There are certainly more, but these are the ones that stand out most. Today begins my quest to right this wrong, and give these artists’ sophomore albums another try.

Well, maybe not tonight. I have a wedding to attend.

OK, so, removing the Preamble entry, this is the 100th post on The Buzz!!

Thank you to everyone who has read, shared, inspired, and commented here. It’s been an absolute thrill to get to know you (or know you better!). I try to provoke discussion, so I definitely appreciate people who tell me I’m wrong!

I gave a lot of thought on what to do for the big 100th post, whether it be a list, a retrospective, etc. As you know, we cover a lot of different ground here, from PR, social media, sports, pop culture and more.

Music, however, is very important to me. I was a bar mitzvah DJ when I was in high school, and transitioned to radio while I was in college.

I’ve always been fascinated with a concept I call “The Soundtrack of My Life.” The jist is, you pick 18 songs that MUST be included in a biopic movie about your life. No other rules apply. Any piece of recorded music is fair game. I made several CDs trying to capture this essence, and every one of them was different. Of course, the 18 songs will change as you have new experiences, are exposed to more music, have more life to cram into 18 tracks, and so on. This IS not a favorite songs list. This is music to be played in your life story. Some of them are included for instrumentals, others for lyrics, and most, hopefully, for both.

I hope you will place your 18 songs in the comments section!

One more thing: Here are my personal favorite posts!

1) The Sports Man-Crush

2) The Currency of Pop Culture

Without further ado, the 100th Buzz – The Soundtrak of My Life (in no particular order):

Two days ago I was shocked at myself. While shuffling through my iTunes song by song, I noticed that many of the songs that I passed by had NEVER been played. I thought to myself, now, what’s the point in having all of these songs if I don’t even take the time to listen to every single one of them? And sure, quite a few of them (well, more than quite a few of them) were contributions from my older brothers, but I still feel bad for having them in my iTunes when I’ve never even listened to them, so for the past couple of days I have been going through and trying to listen to every single one. Note: I have listened to most of them, just not on my computer where it keeps track of how many times I’ve listened to them.

I started with 845 songs in my playlist called “NEVER PLAYED.” Now, two days and 132 songs later, here I am with 713 (almost 712) left for my ears to listen to.

I have had to listen to artists that I have never even heard of or just have never listened to before. Among these were The Fratellis, Metallica, AC/DC, The Offspring (which I’ve never been fond of), Eminem, Lil’ Wayne, Trapt, Phoenix, Soundgarden, Global Deejays, Children of Bodom, The Ramones, Goldfinger, Dave Matthews Band, Michael Bolton, Parachute, Sahara Hotnights, Owl City, and Kardinal Offishall. Surprisingly, I’m finding all of this music bearable. I’ve discovered that I like The Fratellis, can tolerate Metallica, HATE AC/DC, really appreciate Eminem, and can really honestly listen to ANYTHING. This is such a good feeling since I used to be so particular about what I would listen to when I was younger.

I am now down to 711 and am currently listening to “The End of Innocence” by Jamies Elsewhere. Who knew I would ever like so much of this music?

So I’m trying to use up the internet I have left on our Broadband to go thing from Virgin Mobile…and right now I’m listening to the Fratellis…I just bought their CD Costello Music, and I’m really digging it. Its weird because the first time I listened to them I really didn’t like them at all…really really didn’t, lol.

I dunno I think my musical tastes are changing, I’m less interested in dark creepy scremo and weird shiz, and more into ska/indie/alternative (hard to discribe stuff). Not sure if this is good or bad, just different for now.

Also I may have left my cell phone in Boston, I’m really really upset….I have to wait till we get home to properly check, but I’m having a minor freak out.

Also I bought some sick ass nasty shit in Boston I’m really happy about (like MPD Psycho, which I never knew they made into a live action miniseries ).

P.S. I fell in love with Boston all over again, I’m hoping to go to Tufts right outside of Boston, that would rock, ah we can dream!

I have the pictures from London uploaded, but they won’t insert properly. A faster connection tomorrow at the library should help.

Lynyrd Skynyrd – “Free Bird”
Wilco – “It’s Just That Simple” A.M.
Finger Eleven – “Suffocate” The Greyest of Blue Skies
The Cure – “Fascination Street” Disintegration
The Fratellis – “Got Ma Nuts from a Hippie” Costello Music
Kings of Leon – “Charmer” Because of the Times
Jeff Tweedy – “Shot In The Arm” Sunken Treasure Live
Heartless Bastards – “All This Time” All This Time
The Ramones – “Sheena Is A Punk Rocker” Ramones Mania
The Pogues – “Infinity” Hell’s Ditch

This is a great list this week. Not one band I wouldn’t own up to having. “Shot In The Arm” is my favorite off of Sunken Treasure because Jeff Tweedy has to stop and restart twice. After the second restart Tweedy says, “I’ve only played this song seven million f**king times,” exasperated. Once he gets the crowd to help him out, it comes out great.

Even my mom likes them. Which I think is saying something. However, she can’t remember the name at all. Bands: name yourself something easy to remember so then people like my mom will buy your albums. It’s not selling out, it’s just practical. Also, the acronym of your band name is ATE, which I feel is not as marketable as NIN, though I guess OAR is successful so why not.

I haven’t heard the whole cd, but the three tracks I have heard (Does this mean you’re moving on, Wishing well, sometime around midnight) were all good meaning at least 30% of the album is good, which is more than most artists can say (Carolina Liar I am talking to you). I just found that they released another single, Gasoline (thanks wikipedia) and I’m listening to it right now. I’m not so sure about this one. Kind of reminds me of the Fratellis, and while I like the Fratellis I think that the fratellis do the fratellis better (do you think I could insert fratellis in that sentence one more time? oh well at least their band name is easier to remember).

The Fratellis are awesome. [I also enjoy the Hives from time to time, so judge me however you see fit]

David Arnold

Nicolas Angel
Sgt. Rock (is Going to Help Me) เพลง Rock ติดชาร์ทอีกเพลงจาก XTC ที่แค่ชื่อเพลงก็เข้ากับภาพโดยรวมของหนังแล้ว Village Green Preservation Society เพลง Rock เบาๆของ The Kinks ที่สื่อถึงสังคมสงบสุข (หากมองจากแค่ภายนอก) ของเมือง Stanford
T. Rex
The Sweet
Dance With The Devil เป็นเพลงเน้นเฉพาะดนตรีที่ฟังก็รู้ว่าได้แรงบันดาลใจมาจากเพลง Solid Gold Easy Action ในทำนองฟังสบายหูกว่า Night of Fear ของ The Move ที่ในส่วนของดนตรีดัดแปลงมาจากเพลงคลาสสิก 1812 Overture ของคอมโพเซอร์ Tchaikovsky
Caught by the Fuzz และ Here Come the Fuzz คือ เพลงที่ถูกนำมาใช้เป็นธีมสำหรับหนังเรื่องนี้โดยเฉพาะ ทั้งคู่เป็นผลงานของ Supergrass และ Jon Spencer ตามลำดับ ที่แค่ชื่อเพลงก็เข้ากับหนังแล้ว
Avenging Angel

And here is part 2 of the whistling mixes. As before, I’ve tried to mix the obvious (and avoiding so

And here is part 2 of the whistling mixes. As before, I’ve tried to mix the obvious (and avoiding some of the more notorious candidates) with the unexpected. As if to haunt me, every commercial on TV seems to feature some kind of whistle today, as does every background track on TV series. As always, the mix is timed to fit on a standard CR-R (hence two bonus tracks). Click here for Any Major Whistle Vol. 1

*   *   *

1. Beach Boys – Whistle In (1967)
Yes, the Beach Boys feature twice. You can’t have a whistling collection and not begin it with a song called Whistle In, can you? Whistletastic moment: 0:01 Dum-dum-dum-dum-dum and whistle.

2. Peter, Bjorn And John – Young Folks (2006)
I have avoided the inclusion of many an obvious song. No Scorpions. No Don’t Worry Be Happy. No Roger Whitaker. But this one had to be included. It’s Swedish, it’s cheerful, it’s earwormy. Whistletastic moment: 0:08 Everybody purse your lips and whistle along! Our play the percussion bit on your thigh.

3. David Bowie – Golden Years (1976)
I cannot hear this song without thinking abut the bizarre dance sequence with Heath Ledger and Never-heard-from-again Actress in the quite wonderful medieval caper A Knight’s Tale. Whistletastic moment: 3:03 Chameleon-like, the former Ziggy trades his guitar for lips and air.

4. Lovin’ Spoonful – Daydream (1966)
The Lovin’ Spoonful really covered about every genre in popular music, and then mashed the, Here we have a bit of 1920s pop and a bit of blues. Gotta love the Spoonful. Whistletastic moment: 1:14 Chirpy whistle solo, which returns at 2:06 to see the song out.

5. Otis Redding – Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay (1968)
The last song Otis Redding recorded before getting on that plane, apparently. Otis didn’t whistle on here; the job was done by a session man of whom Redding inquired after a poor first take whether he knew what he was doing. We know he did. Whistletastic moment: 2:19 Perhaps the best ever whistle solo in pop.

6. Simon & Garfunkel – Punky’s Dilemma (1968)
This is Simon & Garfunkel 201 — the sort of song you get into once the many great hits have become boring. Whistletastic moment: 1:50 A breezy whistle solo, not by Paul Simon (whom we hear talking in the background) takes us to the song’s end.

7. The Beatles – Two Of Us (1970)
Recorded during the turbulent Let It Be sessions, this is one of the rare (and I think last) post-mop tops era occasions when John and Paul dueted. How nice then that the song ends with a cheery whistle solo before I Dig A Pony kicks in. Whistletastic moment: 3:14 I suppose this is Lennon whistling, as was his wont on a few of his solo tracks.

8. Bobby Bloom – Montego Bay (1970)
Anyone remember Amazulu’s cover in the 1980s? That probably had no whistling (or showtune segment). Bobby Bloom’s original has a recurring whistle hook. Whistletastic moment: 0:01 The hook kicks off the song.

9. Earl Hagen – Theme of the Andy Griffith Show (1960)
As doubtlessly whistled across America once upon a time while washing-up, sweeping the driveway, doing the paper round or constructing a skyscaper. Whistletastic moment: 0:01 The whole thing consists of whistling

10. The Steve Miller Band – Jungle Love (1977)
Terrible underrated ’70s rock band who deserve to be remembered for more than The Joker and Abracadabra. Whistletastic moment: 2:46 Freestyle whistling!

11. The Fratellis – Whistle For The Choir (2006)
Cockney geezers with jangly guitars recall the early ’70s. Irresistible. Whistletastic moment: 2:26 Whistle interlude

12. Liliput – Die Matrosen (1980)
Neue Deutsche Welle with ska sensibility searching for the young soul rebel, in English. Whistletastic moment: 0:52 Song-defining communal whistle interlude, repeated 50 seconds later, and again at 2:32 and 3:33.

13. The Flaming Lips – Christmas At The Zoo (1995)
Let’s go slightly weird: what do you think Coyne and his gang are doing in a zoo at Christmas? Whistletastic moment: 2:27 Whistle solo comes in helpful when you have no lyrics but the music still goes on.

14. Grizzly Bear – Deep Blue Sea (2007)
This sounds so like a country song. It was recorded at home by Grizzly Bear Daniel Rossen. Whistletastic moment: 2:41 Whistle bridge.

15. Guster – All The Way Up To Heaven (2003)
Another underrated group. They toured and performed with Ben Folds and Rufus Wainwright. This song, vaguely reminiscent of Sgt Pepper’s and Pet Sounds, is very lovely indeed. Whistletastic moment: 0:50 You almost thing they are going to break out into the Colonel Bogey March.

16. Cat Power – After It All (2005)
One of the songs that make me appreciate 2005’s The Greatest album. And, I noticed only now, the only woman in the mix. Whistletastic moment: 0:06 The piano and a couple of guitar chords set up the song for the recurring whistle hook.

17. Sammy Davis Jr. – Mr Bojangles (1972)
The song that Sammy took over. As we covered in The Originals series, the song was written by Jerry Jeff Walker. Whistletastic moment: 0:20 Sammy whistles (unlike the other performers of My Bojangles) and does so again later to see the song out.

18. Gene Pitney – Only Love Can Break A Heart (1963)
Gene Pitney Fun Fact 1: He wrote Hello Mary Lou for Ricky Nelson, Rubber Ball for Bobby Vee and He’s A Rebel for the Crystals. Gene Pitney Fun Fact 1: The Crystals’ version of He’s A Rebel kept Pitney’s version of Burt Bacharach Only Love Can Break A Heart from reaching the US#1. Gene Pitney Fun Fact 3: He was the first singer from the rock idiom of pop to sing at the Oscars, performing Town Without Pity in 1962. Whistletastic moment: 0:16 Tremelo whistle.

19. Roxy Music – Jealous Guy (1981)
Roxy Music’s cash-in “tribute” released double-quick after John Lennon’s murder. Hunting Tory greaseball Bryan Ferry whistled better than Rolls Royce socialist Lennon. Whistletastic moment: 3:25 Ferry cross the whistle.

20. Leonard Cohen – One Of Us Cannot Be Wrong (1967)
Don’t dig Cohen? Gentlemen, remember this: when Cohen sings about love and sex, it is intensely sensual. If you want to impress a poetry-loving girl, don’t forget to include Leonard Cohen on your mixtape. This song, for example. Whistletastic moment: 3:19 Laughing Len affords himself a bit of levity by seeing the song out with a (less than accomplished) whistle solo, backed by recorder and the sound of singing hangers-on being interrogated by the Spanish Inquisition..

21. Tom Waits – Green Grass (2004)
As I am playing this song, Any Minor Dude inquires: “What the hell is this?” I reply: “Son, it’s an acquired taste, like Gin, Brussels sprouts or the philosophy of Søren Kierkegaard.” “Well, it’s crap anyway. Whistletastic moment: 2:29 Tom stops groaning to sweeten the song with a melancholy whistle solo.

22. Billy Joel – The Stranger (1977)
It all starts so prettily until the cynical guitars kick in to introduce Billy’s cynical ruminations on the alienation of the self, or something. When he’s done, he reprises the pretty part, just to show that he’s not all cynical, as he’ll soon demonstrate on the LP with a soppy love song imploring Elizabeth not to go changing her hair or trying some new fashion, only to dump her a few years later for a fashion model with lovely hair. Clearly he didn’t let her see the stranger in himself. Whistletastic moment: 0:26 The whistle joins the pretty intro until the cynical guitar comes in. It returns later, with the pretty outro.

23. Glen Campbell – Sunflower (1977)
Nothing cynical in Campbell’s sunshiney, optimistic song, a catchy number even if you hate it. Whistletastic moment: 2:15 Just in case we didn’t catch in just how a good mood Glen is, he sees the song out with a jolly whistle.

24. Monty Python – Always Look On The Bright Side of Life (1979)
You didn’t think I could avoid including this, did you? Whistletastic moment: 0:30 The first whistled response to Eric Idle’s appeal to buoyancy.

DOWNLOAD

And a couple of bonus whistling tracks which I could not accommodate in the mix without disturbing what I hope is a good flow:

Guy Mitchell – Singin’ The Blues.mp3
Perry Como – Magic Moments.mp3

.

Daring to gyre and gimble in the wabe of Glastonbury is about as treacherous manoeuvre as any festival organisers could ever assume yet the summer-long sunburn show must go on. If Hyde Park’s overblown commercialist haven that is Wireless were the South Pole, Kent’s second ever Hop Farm festival would be at the utmost northern point possible on the planet, without a single advertising placard. Apt then that it should fall on the weekend of Independence Day. God bless individualism. Whilst the most part of this year’s run-down reads like the index to a dated Uncut magazine (The Fratellis and Paul Weller bring their oh-so-90s-it-hurts Mondeo man MOR to the main stage), the crown jewels are buried in the haystack that is the inspirationally branded Third Stage.

Nowhere near enough about North Wales’ prime purveyors of poppy post-punk The Joy Formidable has bursted out of blog holes thus far, although with such a vivid audio assault as their early evening pristine chimes and chirps, status, perhaps cult, is sure to ensue. Blasting through the technicolour lo-fi trash hits barely contained within debut EP A Balloon Called Moaning as if the fate of the universe hangs in the balance, frontwoman Ritzy Bryan calmly seduces every ear drum and every male eye ball, before ripping them ferociously from their sockets, lodging them in her back pocket for half an hour and reluctantly handing them back until they shred stages, faces and guitar strings all through the sadistically scorching summer climes. New Wave will never be the same again.

Not quite tuned into the same wavelength are The Chapman Family, a North Westerly quartet already disregarded as a cult as deviously disruptive as Mormonism. In reality they are neither cult nor family. What they are is an inspirationally aggressive amalgamation of filth-ridden angst, inaudibly audacious bone-shredding shrieks and pure, triple distilled emotion. Kids is the bastard offspring of Maxïmo Park bundled in a 300°C infernal washing machine with a pain killer or two and six strands of Robert Smith’s barnet. Smashing an Argos grotesque guitar into the quaking stage beneath like a gothic grim reaper possessed before calmly discussing mutual acquaintances stage right, Kingsley Hall blends together fiction and reality, rationality and insanity, whirring all sensibility into hypnotic obsession. Relieved to escape in one piece, hearts pound and teeth chatter before The Chapman Family disappear up the M1 to their miserabilist hub that is home. The darkest side of the moon never seemed so God-damned bright.

Hiya, I’m back!!

Funny Scenario really the reason why I once again am blogging!! Firstly I went out last night and had an awesome time and secondly a moment that took place in a supermarket today!!

Firstly last night- A night takes place monthly at The Scala Kings Cross London called Facedown. I have been once and my experience wasn’t great, I got back late and didn’t feel that I got anything from it that I couldn’t have got my locally! However, some of my friends were going and some were contemplating going! I didn’t really feel it so declined the offers that came my way (It was one- I’m not cool!!). Despite my initial invitational decline I was persuaded to go by my good friend Brown Bear!! It took a while but I think deep down he knew he would convince me as, scarily he knows exactly how my brain functions!! Just briefly this was the one and only tactic used: He has been convincing me over the past sort of 4 months I suppose that a girl we often meet at Gigs fancies me who would be going. Now, firstly, I depute this and feel that she is just being nice/friendly and secondly, the feelings (if they do exist) aren’t reciprocated by myself. Now he managed, actually fairly easily, to get me to believe that in fact she does fancy me and visa verse!! See how easy it is to get in to my head!! So anyway we all headed for Kings Cross. I drove and we listened to some “Big Tunes” on the way down!! When we got there I had an awesome time and I loved pretty much every minute of it!! We met some interesting characters and some old friends and the whole night was wicked!!

I suppose what I am trying to say is that for whatever reason I didn’t want to go out last night but I did and I had a wicked time so what I am saying is that, within reason of course, you should try and become a “Yes Man” and take any offers that come your way because sometimes the most unplanned unlikely experiences can be some of the best of your life. Think about that for a second……..

Oh and before I forget how this relates to an incident that happened in the supermarket today. I saw an attractive girl and we had what I would call a “moment” and I was just thinking how if you walked up to every girl you fancied and said hi how you would be improving your chances of taking yourself out the singledom pool that myself and many others are in. We don’t do it due to fear of rejection/ embarrassment but even if we do get rejection what’s the chance of seeing the majority of them again? What I am trying to say (sorry for waffling!!) is that we should live our life to the full and do everything that we want to do whether it be talk to the attractive girl, bunnjy jump or just spend a night out with some awesome friends and also some things we don’t want to do because we never know what will happen tomorrow

“So Live Your Life”

Peace Out

Mr Happy xxxx
