This is a sick, sick world, I thought. I walked around Cheapo Records in Minneapolis,

This is a sick, sick world, I thought.

I walked around Cheapo Records in Minneapolis, MN, a few days after Christmas 2002, in total contempt. Around the store, next to Christmas tree stickers and peeling Black Flag decals, were index cards with the words “R.I.P. Joe Strummer” written in black marker. Not funny.

I asked the cashier what was up with all the signs.

Are you serious?

I gave him the best steely look I could.

Joe died a few days ago, man. Heart attack. Where the hell have you been?

How I made it home from that music store remains a mystery.

…

Musical artists are an extended family to me. I know more about them than I do some of my relatives. The benefits of this arrangement are:

1. These kin are selectively vetted and chosen.
2. I only have to deal with their better characteristics.

The downside, however, is that a tragedy in the music world affects me more than is probably healthy.

Marvin Gaye’s murder back in the early 80’s left me stunned and puzzled. When Kurt Cobain died, I was angry and disappointed. Freddie Mercury’s death prompted mourning via black nail polish and incessant Queen playlists.

Joe’s death was pain. A crushing pain.

His absence was inconceivable. It was preposterous. I chuckle now at how blind I was to the news, even when staring at it in black and white. R.I.P.? Am I being punk’d? No, really. Is that a camera over there?

He was not allowed to be gone. Joe was immortal. Above death or demise. This was my conviction. This was my error.

…

In “The Future is Unwritten”, a documentary by Julien Temple, I was able to see the fallible Joe Strummer. The Joe Strummer who cheated on his girlfriend and stole other bandmates’ girlfriends. The Joe Strummer who abandoned lifelong friends almost overnight once he joined The Clash. The Joe Strummer who betrayed Topper Headon, fired Mick Jones and almost single-handedly dissolved The Clash.

I needed to see this.

I needed to see Joe the Man: accessible, fallible, and real. His slow rise to fame, brilliant climax, depressing downfall, and subsequent redemption all strengthened my respect for him as a human being.

The documentary follows him from his very early years as a youngster to his final days. Each chapter of his life is copiously spliced with rare video footage and photographs. If nothing else in this documentary entices veteran Clash or Strummer fans, then the fresh celluloid should.

Aside from the videos, the documentary is comprised of friends, lovers, and bandmates sharing their reminiscences of Joe. No shortage of stories. No shortage of opinions. No shortage of laughter and pleasure. Most are interviewed outside, around a campfire, just as Joe would have loved it.

There are no introductions to the interview subjects. No titles or names flashed across the screen. Gradually this omission falls to the wayside. The contextual relevance of each person becomes evident, but, somehow, the anonymity adds to the viewing experience. It doesn’t matter if it’s Bono talking or the guy that once fixed his guitar. Joe connected with everyone in the same way.

He craved the street culture of his surroundings. The dives, the underground clubs and seedy bars. Talking to people from all walks of life. He was the everyday everyman.

We see him walking the streets to pass out fliers for his new band, the Mescaleros. The legendary Joe Strummer pounding the pavement like so many other fledgling bands starving for an audience. Pedestrians rebuff him. He forges on eagerly and humbly.

“Never feel above anyone else.”

Every now and then you hear Joe’s voice during the interview breaks. He announces the soundtrack of the film, the songs played in the backdrop of nostalgia and thoughts. It is a radio broadcast of one of his many world-music shows. Nina Simone. U-Roy. Elvis Presley. Eddie Cochran. MC5.

You hear him excited about techno music and raves. He can’t keep up with the new stuff out there, he states. He rambles enthusiastically to anyone who will listen. He has an insatiable musical appetite. Cumbia. African. Native, Incan, Mexican. Learning from everything on this silly, eclectic, lovely blue orb in the cosmos.

“If you keep it too narrow, it’s going to kill the life in music.”

If you have never heard any of his world music playlists, then the film’s soundtrack would do you good. This is Joe. This is him transformed after The Clash: after the triumph, after the pitfalls, after the punk regiment, after the self-discovery, after the reconciliation.

In the end, he needed to go through that, through the less savory Joe incarnations. He needed to trudge through the muck in order to retain his dignity.

“Punk rock means exemplary manners to your fellow human beings.”

Joe Strummer didn’t just bring authenticity back to the music. He brought it back to what it means to be human.

R.I.P. to the man but his message is immortal.

“People can change anything they want to; and that means everything in the world. People are running about following their little tracks. I am one of them. But we’ve all gotta stop… just stop following our own little mouse trail. People can do anything; this is something that I’m beginning to learn. People are out there doing bad things to each other; it’s because they’ve been dehumanized. It’s time to take that humanity back into the centre of the ring and follow that for a time. Greed… it ain’t going anywhere! They should have that on a big billboard across Times Square. Think on that. Without people you’re nothing.” (Joe Strummer)

So, I’m the last Clash fan in the world to watch this film. It doesn’t stop me consider

So, I’m the last Clash fan in the world to watch this film. It doesn’t stop me considering it a very wonderful and intimate portrait of who, it transpires, was quite a fucked up genius.

OK, we always knew he was a public schoolboy doing all that gobbing stuff as a punk.

Was he a true communist?

I doubt it, but his views were passionately held and he walked the walk for as long as it really mattered.

Interesting to note just how upper middle class his mrs was though.

I loved, adored, the Clash, not especially from a politiccal ideology but because their mid-career music (especially London Calling) was the best of its generation at an age where music most consumed me.

Julian Temple’s movie demands respect because he didn’t take the fanclub approach. He brilliantly paints this troubled man’s life story in a way I was not expecting.

I don’t know much about The Clash, I only own a compilation, but this was a really good film. Directed by Julien Temple, it includes a mixture of biography and documentary. This chronicling of Joe Strummer’s life is a must not only for punk fans, but also music fans in general and anyone who is looking to be inspired. Particularly after the clash finished it seemed that Joe Strummer just realised how good it was to be alive and this came across really strongly in the later part of the film. The film was really well done, it was a mixture of old photos and video footage, with interviews of people that either knew him or were fans of his, including Johnny Depp, Bono, John Cusack and Steve Buscemi amongst others. It also included clips from his World Service show. In the early part of the film there was also a lots of animation which was probably either his drawings or based on them, although I don’t know that for sure. I highly recommend that you watch it if you get the chance.

If your a musician, an artist, or anyone with a soul then Joe Strummer’s biography will move you.

Find it online or at your local video store. Do your self a favor and check it out. It is not only a great biography on some one who changed modern music, but it is a look at persistence, focus, and vision.

I have watched it twice, and like all great art, it gets better each time you experience it.

The Clash treads hallowed rock and roll ground. This is one of the few bands that not only inspire progression, but outright thievery. Rock bands have been ripping of the Clash – badly- for 30 years now. The Future is Unwritten is Julian Temple’s excellent documentary on the band’s iconic catalyst Joe Strummer.

This film is not a giant leap in the genre of rock star bios but the combination of a powerful subject in Strummer, the artistic vision of Temple and the support of many talking heads makes this one of the better rock documentaries.

Temple filmed the interviews by a campfire. The campfire could have been a gimmick gone wrong but it adds an intimacy that would otherwise be gone in a studio. It also allows the interview subjects – everyone from Strummer’s childhood friends to Johnny Depp – to relax and reflect, rather than remember and regurgitate.

One drawback to the campfire scenes is Temple does not include the name of whoever may be speaking. Old punks do not look the same they did in ‘77. While there are several instantly recognizable faces, not everyone in the film has had the luxury of starring in blockbuster movies or fronting world famous rock bands. The problem is that the people you recognize have the least to say. Those closest to Strummer, and his own interviews over the years, reveal far more about the man as a person rather than the punk rock warlord. It is wonderful to see these people say what a lousy guy he could be and that his actions pissed them off. It made him human, and even more remarkable for what he achieved.

There seems to be a common thread of influence that runs through many of England’s greatest rock musicians. Strummer, like many well to do future musicians, attended art school. Basic rock and roll combined with a healthy dose of artsy pretension seems to be a great combination. Maybe this lends itself to a worldview that most people do not have. It also explains the visual element in Strummer’s work. Not only was he a remarkable lyricist he was a tireless artist. Sketching, painting, taking endless notes and constantly creating. The film pulls in many of his notes, sketches and paintings into the visual element of the film. Temple adds animation to the sketches to a great effect. This aspect of the film adds a frenetic punk energy while the campfire interviews add the quiet intimacy.

Critics heaped praise on this film as it hit festivals, and rightfully so, it is a very good film. The Future is Unwritten tunes into the energy of Joe Strummer, and stands as a fitting tribute to its protagonist.

My previous post about Joe Manning and the image I created of listening to him by campfire brought to mind another extraordinary musician, Joe Strummer. As mentioned in YESorNO DC recently, the documentary detailing Joe’s life as a solo and collaborative musician is finally out. The Future is Unwritten is not just a movie about the Clash. It’s not just a movie about 70’s/80’s London. It’s not just a movie about punk rock or revolution. Rather it’s a collage of these things plus an evocative look into the creation of Joe Strummer–punk rock warlord and (gasp!) human. It’s nice to finally peek behind the curtain…Joe is more than just the ‘leader’ of the Clash. He’s the son of a diplomat, boarding school failure, brother of suicide, former hippie, righteous thinker, father, escapist, and campfire enthusiast.

One refreshing thing about the film is that there are no chyrons–graphics announcing the name of the interviewee or location. Childhood friends, lovers, bandmates, fans, celebrities appear without fanfare. Just as, I assume, Joe would have preferred.

As a sidenote, this film sturred me to pick up Psychotic Reactions… again and re-read Lester’s article about The Clash. If you have yet to read it, please consider.

Okay, I went to see The Dark Knight (imdb link) this past weekend — mostly because I hate to miss out on being a part of a big time cultural event in this great nation of ours. After all $9 is a small price to pay to be a part of American movie history! In retrospect I must say it was one of the best bloodbaths I have ever had the privilege to watch. (Technically, I’m not sure that many people actually died in the movie, but there were a lot of really kewl explosions and why should I let the facts get in the way?) Seriously, a good movie even if you don’t enjoy comic books.

Here’s what I’ve rented recently:

* Coffee and Cigarettes (imdb link) – Jim Jarmusch (wiki link) is a great director. However, this is not one of this better efforts. If you’re reading this in Memphis, I would recommend renting Mystery Train (imdb link). If you’re reading this anywhere else you should rent Night On Earth (imdb link). For those of you who don’t know JJ discovered Roberto Benigni and helped Billy Bob Thornton to get financing for Sling Blade (he has a cameo in the movie). Johnny Depp, Bill Murray, and Forrest Whittaker have all had leading roles in his movies.

* Rock n Roll Documentaries/Mockumentaries – We all know I’m a rocker through and through (“AC/DC, Van Halen not Van Hagar, Skynyrd, Def Leppard…” ha ha). I recently rented a documentary about the former lead singer of The Clash called Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten (imdb link)and a documentary about Hunter S. Thompson called Buy the Ticket, Take the Ride (imdb link). It is amazing how many of the same people knew and hung out with both of these guys. Both movies were interesting, but somewhat laborious. However, both might be much better if you knew very little about either person. BTW, there is a great movie waiting to be made concerning Joe Strummer’s life from the time The Clash broke up until his untimely death. If ever make it to NYU film school and if I find that patron – you know, the one who shares my vision and his/her wealth making my vision come true – I already have my senior project.

* The Bank Job (imdb link) – If this movie wasn’t based on a true story you would never believe it. It is an enjoyable rent. It’s not art and there isn’t some redeeming message. It’s just enjoyable.

* Nora (imdb link) – I’m watching a lot of movies about Ireland since I just returned from there in June. This movie is about the very different relationship between James Joyce and his wife Nora. Not particularly well done, but still worth the rent if you want to learn more about James Joyce although it doesn’t tell the secret of reading Ulysses without being a pompous ass.

* College Road Trip (imdb link) – There was once a time in cinematic history when rated “X” did not equate to pornography. When Midnight Cowboy was originally released it was rated X, and just to clarify, yes, I am talking about the version with Dustin Hoffman and John Voight. Well, apparently rated X now means porno and rated G apparently means sucks! This movie shows why Donnie Osmond is not an actor. Hopefully when he quits acting he will take Martin Lawrence with him! So, you’re thinking “surely there was something good in the movie” and you’re right — Donnie Osmond had some of the best movie hair in cinematic history! No really, great hair!

* The Matchmaker (imdb link) – Once again, an Irish flick. I saw this one when it was originally released on video (in the days of VHS) and didn’t think it was all that good. Guess what, first impressions are correct!

Late. No really, it is still late.

Got to see The Future is Unwritten recently, and recommend it highly. Along with Don Letts’ Westway to the World, you’ve got all the Clash info and interviews you’ll need. The trailer for Future:

]

The soundtrack for this film is pretty swell too – Strummer plays the DJ throughout, and introduces his own favourites – wide ranging and all great. The Clash make appearances in quality rarities, and Strummers pre-Clash band the 101ers are represented too. It’s a record worth getting – a great mix tape from the late, missed, wonderful old Warlord.

Here’s Racid Taha doing Rock the Casbah – awesome. If you look on youtube you can watch him perform the tune with Mick Jones.

Januar hatte Saturn u.a.

Latino caribo, mondo bongo,
the flower looks good in your hair…

Ever since reading this Sacred Facts post, while I was still in Nicaragua, I have been desparate to see The Future is Unwritten – the Joe Strummer biopic.

Finally Love Film – came up trumps and it was delivered to my doorstep.

It proved to be well worth waiting for.

The best part? The World Service bits from Joe’s own show that link it all together. What a presence. What a voice. What great taste.

Today I went out and purchased the CD.

With 25 tracks it’s a good start, but surely there’s a market for the show to be aired again. Maybe to a podcast audience?

It’d be a welcome addition to my Ipod and a great soundtrack to my morning Number One bus trips through Heaton.

So, Mr Sambrook, who do we bully to get this podded?

* The pic is one of my own. It’s a particularly colourful rendition of Sandino, the inspiration behind Nicaragua’s Sandinistas (who The Clash were to name an album after). One of the high points of the film for me was seeing Strummer and the boys sporting Sandinista style scarves, complete with the iconic Sandino image. The shot was taken in Leon, Nicaragua. More Sandino pics here.

Being a Clash/Joe Strummer fan, I’m SO excited to see The Future is Unwritten this weekend! I doubt I will ever be able to pinpoint what it was about the band that struck such a chord with me as a teen. It never felt like rebellion, but rather like something you could hold onto. And in college I found some folks who also admired the band…they’ve just been a part of my atmosphere this whole time.

More Clash-related news – there is a very good podcast from The Times Online that begs to be heard. Tony James and Mick Jones talk history, friends, family, tv remotes…and music.

You know how so many Americans complain about British accents? I think Mick Jones is one of the very, very few British musicians that I have to listen to a few times to make out exactly what he’s saying.

Good stuff.
