Expect to see a few new posters soon as I have been very busy. I had the pleasure of doing one of my dream gigs recently for The Get Up Kids. I also had the opportunity to catch them live at the show that I produced the poster for.

The new poster is 18×24 printed on 100lb white Cougar paper and is limited to only 100 prints with 50 available to the public. I also have a set of art prints available with the same image that is limited to only 50 prints with only 30 available to the public.

These will both be available to purchase on Wednesday, November 25, 2009 at midnight (Tuesday night) on Nakatomi along with two other prints for a total release of a set of four new posters. Stay tuned for that…anyways, back to the matter at hand:

My friend Laura Leebove makes things happen. Like getting to the very front of a sold out Get Up Kids show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. Just like that.

This was definitely a rock show, and it made me realize I hadn’t been to a rock show in ages. Sure, people were moving a bit at Phoenix and Passion Pit, but at the Get Up Kids show, people were CRAZY!

Laura and I had to fight for our lives. Arms up, head down. Haha. We tried to avoid the circle pit and since we were so close to the front, we only really kept getting pushed further to the front. Then a bunch of big guys were crowd surfing and landing on people’s heads (ours). Goes with the territory, I guess.

I loved the Get Up Kids in high school, a lot of their songs make me think of some very great times, so it was awesome to finally see them – at their first Brooklyn show, no less. Next time I may want to stand more in the back if I don’t want bruises the day after but for a night of nostalgia and singing my little heart out, it really wasn’t so bad.

Ok, I will write my Halloween update before I start working on this project that I am supposed to be working on…And then, no more internet for the entire night!!!

Ok, my Halloween basically started on Tuesday, when I went to the annual Dupont Circle High Heels Race, where I witnessed tons of guys dressed up in drag (some actual drag queens, some just getting in the spirit) and race down 17th street in pumps. It was raining, and so I was very impressed that not more of them fell.

I couldn’t see very well, but it was very exciting. If you go to about 3:00 into that video, you can see the race.

The rest of the week was pretty normal. Saturday, I woke up and drove down to Hagerstown, where I met up with Dustin. We dressed up as Cookie Monster (me) and The Count (D-Money) from Sesame Street. We went to Chloe’s house for a party. There was soooo much delicious food and fun people! Dustin and I handed out candy, and then a few of us went trick-or-treating. Some of the costumes at the party were…Cookie Monster, The Count, Venkman from Ghostbusters, Steven Tyler, a groupy, a doctor, Babs and Bugs Bunny, a Jamaican pumpkin, a nerd, a vampiress, an airplane hanger, and a hippie. We had a bobbing for apples contest that I successfully won.It has always been one of my favorite activities. Then, we played this Donut game, where the donuts are hanging from the ceiling, and people have to race to see who can eat it the fastest. I didn’t play because I was completely stuffed on other food, and I didn’t want to eat a donut. We then had a small dance party in the basement, followed by a very long game of Cranium, where Dustin and I won by default because we all got bored and quit the game.

Dustin and I then went to the sorely disappointing Minden party, where everyone was already so drunk that it was gross. We didn’t even really see that many great costumes. There was a good Wonder Woman, and the Ninja Turtles were OK…but in all honesty, the party made me realize that I am so happy to be out of that lifestyle. It’s one thing when you’re the one in it, but then looking at it from the outside…it’s disgusting. I had SOOO much more fun at the party with no mind-changing substances, then at the one where there was a lot of drinking, and I think there was this dude passed out in the corner from doing drugs. IDK. Dustin and I left after about 10 minutes.

And that was Halloween! Yesterday, Dustin and I went to the Hagerstown park, where he took lots of pictures and we played on the swingset and went to the Washington County Art Museum. We rented Scream, watched it, and then I drove home.

Oooh! And tomorrow is The Get Up Kids show! I am very excited!

Let me attempt to paint you a picture. Name your favorite band of all-time. This doesn’t hav

Let me attempt to paint you a picture. Name your favorite band of all-time. This doesn’t have to necessarily be the band you think has the most talent, nor does it have to be the most popular band or the coolest band. Just your FAVORITE band… the one that will always remain in your heart and soul and the one you can recall countless memories of what you were doing while listening to their songs. Okay, got it?

Now name your favorite album of all-time. The one album that has all killer and no filler. The one album you can recite every single word of every single track. The album that holds more meaning to you than any other collection of songs.

In my case, The Get Up Kids is my favorite band, and “Something to Write Home About” is my favorite album. So try to understand the ecstasy I was in when they performed the entire album of “Something to Write Home About” from start to finish with minimum breaks. I was in heaven. There’s no other way to describe the state of bliss I experienced.

Anyway, the concert was held on Halloween, so everyone was dressed up in costume including the bands. When The Get Up Kids came out they rocked the whole Wizard of Oz theme. Lead singer Matt Pryor was the Scarecrow, Jim Suptic was the Tin Man, Rob Pope was Dorothy, James Dewees was the Lion, and I’m not actually sure what Ryan Pope was.

I had a pretty funny interaction with my friends at the show, because prior to leaving we looked at the setlist The Get Up Kids have been playing on their reunion tour and we were totally stoked at all the amazing songs they were playing. But when they took the stage and played the first three songs off of “Something to Write Home About” we turned to each other and wondered if they were actually playing the album in its entirety. And then Matt Pryor said something on the lines of “There’s nothing like playing a whole album on Halloween.” Our eyes widened and our jaws dropped to the ground. And the rest was history.

The best part about The Get Up Kids playing the entire album was hearing them perform certain songs on the album that I’ve never seen they play before. One notable song (and arguably my favorite off of the album) was “Long Goodnight.” Pryor actually admitted that they probably only played this song live about 5 times in their entire career. But also hearing gems they usually don’t play like “The Company Dime”, “My Apology”, and “Close to Home” was amazing as well.

After completing the album, The Kids left the stage briefly and returned with as Pryor put it, “Part Two” of the set. With “Something to Write Home About” finished, they went on to play hits off the rest of their albums. Half of these songs included old tracks such as “Don’t Hate Me”, “Coming Clean”, and “Mass Pike.” They even played a new song titled “Keith Case.” Their finale was the incredibly powerful “Walking on a Wire.”

To recap, my favorite band performed my favorite album in its entirety. Needless to say, this was and always will be my favorite concert performance. I sure hope The Get Up Kids stay together, record more albums, and tour a lot more.

–

On their first full American tour since reuniting earlier in the year, The Get Up Kids approached Ne

On their first full American tour since reuniting earlier in the year, The Get Up Kids approached New York City with a three-night stand across Manhattan and Brooklyn. On the heels of a special Halloween show that found the band performing all of Something to Write Home About, the Kansas City five-piece took aim at the Music Hall of Williamsburg.

At home in Brooklyn in front of friends and family, Kevin Devine opened with a solo performance of “Brooklyn Boy” at before being joined by The Goddamn Band for the rest of the set. A few older cuts were tossed into the mix (“Flatline Blur” and “Noose Dressed Like a Necklace” from 2003’s Make the Clocks Move); the set was fairly well spread across his discography.

Kevin Devine

Songs from Brother’s Blood were strong, including the enormous title track and the pointed single, “Another Bag of Bones”. Midway through “Carnival” Devine experienced guitar troubles, possibly reducing the forty-minute set from nine to eight songs as the crew struggled to get a working guitar and amplifier on stage. Nonetheless, Kevin Devine and the Goddamn Band sounded as strong as ever and adequately warmed the crowd for the feature act. The full set:

Brooklyn Boy
Flatline Blur
Go Haunt Someone Else
Yr Husband
Carnival
Another Bag of Bones
Noose Dressed Like a Necklace
Brother’s Blood

The Get Up Kids sounded great, reaching across their entire discography from 1997’s Four Minute Mile to their 2004 farewell, Guilt Show. Older songs like “Coming Clean” and “Mass Pike” offered a glimpse into what set The Get Up Kids apart from their peers in their earliest days as a band; 1999 cuts like “Holiday” and “Out of Reach” hinted at the band’s more mature sound that would come full circle with 2002’s On a Wire.

The Get Up Kids

As highlighted on songs such as “Overdue”, Matt Pryor delivered a strong vocal performance throughout the night. The Cure’s “Close to Me” received quality treatment as part of an encore that even found Pryor stepping up to sing “Ten Minutes” for the first time ever, as the standard singer for the song, guitarist Jim Suptic, was unable to sing due to illness. Keyboardist James Dewees helped fill in on backing vocals where necessary, as well, injecting his more hardcore vocal approach into the mix.

By night’s end, it was hard to want more from The Get Up Kids (except maybe the Suptic-sung “Campfire Kansas”, one of their strongest songs). Held together by the Pope brothers rhythm section–bassist Rob and drummer Ryan–the band was incredibly tight and extremely energetic for more than hour. The band plans to record in 2010; if the night’s performance is any indication, the upcoming songs should sound phenomenal.

Tomorow is Halloween, and yes, I’m doing the whole song and dance of dressing up. The Grandma

Tomorow is Halloween, and yes, I’m doing the whole song and dance of dressing up. The Grandma Coat is coming out and probably some obnoxious amount of pearls and cocktail rings. Meghan and I will be heading into the City for Halloween festivities. Normally, I would avoid New York on Halloween but there is a very special event that neither of us could deny: The Get Up Kids Reunion Tour. I never stopped listening to them (ok, maybe The Guilt Show, not so much) and when I didn’t get a chance to see them on their farewell tour, I wrote it off as having to say good-bye to one of my favorite bands. But as another indicator of old age (late 20s is old age), they are reuniting. This is the band that defined so much for me and set as the soundtrack to so many things- simpler times if you must. Let’s take a stroll down memory lane:

2000ish: I’m pretty sure I had a license and I was driving towards Watsessing back in Bloomfield to drop off some friends. One of these friends was Tishon. Tishon is one of the coolest cats I have had the pleasure of knowing in me life. I don’t exactly remember how we met, obviously it was in high school, but anyway, we were in my car with another friend and he takes out of his backpage this album.

T: “Yo, have you heard of the Get Up Kids?”

Me: “Nah, who are they?”

T: “This awesome band. This album is so good. You need to listen to it. “

Me: “Allright.”

So, this kids was before the time of fancy cd-burners and Something To Write Home About came to me via a mixed tape. My car (God bless you Dexter, may you RIP) only had a tape deck anyway so it was cool. And let me tell you- I listened to that sucker everytime I was in the car. Then I finally got around to burning it. Then a year or so later I got around to actually buying it. My music life was so oddly varied: I was really into Sugar Ray (I’m sorry, RPM and Mean Machine? those were awesome songs. Cmon.) but I did enjoy the Smashing Pumpkins and Weezer. So GUK was just one step further into the depths of Indie, Emo, etc.

PS: You can visit Tishon here. Learn of his awesomeness.

2001ish: Late bloomer here, I fell into my first relationship at the culmination of senior year. Jason. He was into me because:

My lack of smiling (really.)

My sharp wit.

My ‘cool’ taste in music.

OK, so my music taste wasn’t established but #3 rested on the simple fact that I listened to a band like the Get Up Kids. After high school, I wanted to get out NJ for a while, so I decided to go school in Providence, RI. It became a Long Distance Relationship and as most high school couples take the leap to college couple, we needed to mark our territories and celebrate every single tradition.

A quick thing that got established by Jay was a song. This song was Mass Pike. You know, because I lived in Rhode Island…and that was the gateway to New England. You do not take the Massachusetts Turnpike to Providence from New Jersey, but because he associated it with us it was The Best Song Ever. The dinky, almost child-like intro would always bring a smile to my face. Jay would listen to it and then tell me about it when we had a scheduled camera chat (web cams were kind of a big deal back then) or on the phone (I ran up a stupid phone bill the first month in Providence. let’s not discuss it). He was so psyched when he downloaded it illegally from somewhere. he would play it over the phone too. It became a staple in mixed CD’s he would make for me.

We broke up at the end of Freshman year. (We’re totally cool now).

2002ish: Ok, actually in between the awesome phone convos and blowing kisses over a Logitech web cam, there was some other business going on to. Looking back at it, it was almost natural to happen- being miles away from your first ‘love’ and meeting new people, that crushes develop on boys who are not your boyfriend! My relationship with Jay was somewhat deteriorating around March of 02, obviously this is more evident to us now- I had kind of established a newer identity in Providence- punk, emo, or hardcore shows, track jacket wearing, scenester night at Club Hell. I had met friends who exposed me to these cool new things, that I could dig because of my pedigree of Get Up Kids and Vagrant records show and Battle of the Bands at Birchwood Nightclub back at home.

But anyway, around that time I was hanging with my usual posse in Providence; mainly Nisha and Corianne. Then all of sudden, I started hanging out with this other dude. I don’t remember when, how he came around. Patrick. He just appeared out of nowhere, hanging out with Nisha then all of sudden hanging out with me. I remember many a night sitting in the camp chairs in his room, one floor up watching the late show by ourselves and him being with us when we were trying to find a bats+mice/Bradford Ave show deep into the Eastside.

Patrick was a NJ native, chubby in the hot kind of way, didn’t talk too much, lived on the sixth floor of McNulty Hall but we were friends. My 19th birthday was marred though when Nisha got mad that I was hanging out with Patrick and he said he wouldn’t go to Club Hell and that kind of bummed me out. I totally had a crush on him.

Anyway, the GUK connection here is that he burned me On the Wire because I loved The Get Up Kids, and couldn’t figure out how to illegally download music onto my computer. We both agreed it was ‘Ok’ but I kind of secretly cherished it because he had given it to me (along with Second Stage Turbine Blade by Coheed and Cambria)- it absolutely rules when crushes give you gifts. At the end of the year I hated JWU and was moving back to go to Rutgers/NJ and we kept in touch on and off and I saw him once when I visited Nisha and Corianne.

2006ish: I was on the verge of graduating college, and I was a frightful mess most of my senior year. I probably didn’t acknowledge it and either hung out with my then boyfriend (no GUK connections there- I think I tried getting him to listen to it and he wasn’t having it), worked, studied, or drank. I had a good life in New Brunswick with my friends.

Proceed to my 23rd birthday. Rutgersfest, crazy debaucherous festival of music and booze was taking place the Friday before my birthday. Unfortunately, I was burdened with finishing my entire college education in the time span of 2 days- 2 twenty page papers and 2 exams and lets throw in a presentation for good measure. I didn’t have the nice pad of finals study time like most other people, so I spent most of Rutgersfest in the computer lab, until I had enough and needed to drink.

I got a surprising text from Patrick. Let me explain- he had moved back to NJ after college and would try to hang out in New Brunswick with me, but I always had something going on. Anyway, this night it happened to be the right timing and we ended meeting up and hanging out with other friends here and there that crazy night.

He kissed me that night. I had a boyfriend. He said he was in love with me. I said he drank too much beer.Etc, etc. I broke up with my boyfriend, started hanging out with him a lot, graduated college, went on dates with him (like actual dates) and had amazing fun the entire month of May.

Did things work out between us? No. I went to the Philippines for a month and came back to flakiness, so that was that. I still though, can’t help but think of him when I listen to this album. Overdue pretty much sums it up. I went out on a limb for him, but instead I was 23. But if anything, it got me out of a stale relationship with my ex boyfriend, boosted my confidence, and after all the crying and being bummed out- I got my groove back and a series of events led me to my current SO, who I can safely say, is the love of my life.

2004ish: I was back at home, enrolled at Rutgers, super depressed for a lot of reasons. This GUK exerpt of life will be short and sweet. Four-Minute Mile is probably the GUK album I associate with some really rad friends.

It’s funny, but it’s not explicit because I don’t remember the connect as clearly as the others. I just remember listening to this album with a variety of people. I remember asking Megha’s super cute neighbor who was into super awesome music if he wanted to go to Eighteen Visions (yeah, bitches I was so hardcore. yeah right, I was going because my RI friends were in town for it) and he totally had this album. Some guy that Megha made out with in her dorm gave her his copy of it, and I ‘m pretty sure this is how it came into my ownership. Emily listened to a lot of awesome music and our friendship was based on mutual intimidation (it’s related to the Eighteen Visions concert) and I remember other than the Smiths, I was totally freaking out because she had this album.

God, I love the Get Up Kids and I am sooo psyched for tomorrow’s show. The last thing I will mention is the amazing music video idea I’ve had for Action & Action since forever. I’m pretty sure I drew out storyboards. It came after I saw Empire Records and That Thing You Do! and somehow the idea formed.

Basically, The Get Up Kids are this awesome early 60ish rock and roll garage band that gets signed (insert the Tom Hank figure from TTYD here) to play like the number 1 tv show in the country. They blow up and take the country by storm: there are a lot of montages of girls screaming, they are wearing matching suits, vintage microphones- it’s like the Beatles but it’s the Get Up Kids. BUT THEN! Matt Pryor is getting too much attention and this is causing mad internal conflict and they break up. Flash to cover of Life magazine with the news.

Now, if you’re familiar with the song, the break up happens about 2:40 minutes into the song. You flash to the news etc, then at 2:50ish you see a solo drumstick beating out that riff or whatever you call it- then slowly the rest of the band comes into focus and omg…they are back together again. The rest of the video is the Get Up Kids playing their come back tour and it’s awesome because it’s in color- a big deal in the 60s, right?

The Get Up Kids, Meghan, and I (and probably some people we might not want to see because of our past muahaha) will be at the Fillmore at Irving Plaza, on Halloween, with sassy cat masks. Get at us!

On the work end, progress is slow but steady on The Underground, I think Mike Howell’s gonna have some promo art for me to show you in the near future. I just submitted my contribution to another project a week or so ago that I’m excited about, and Tess and I want to start something in the near future together that’s also starting to come together nicely.

Hope everyone else is having a safe and awesome Samhain!

The Get up Kids, diez años después, siguen haciendo lo más dificil: mantenerse vigentes.

Seriously, this is one of the scariest things I’ve ever dealt with and faced. That blank page and blinking cursor, waiting for that first word to end up there…*shivers*…

“The horror…THE HORROR!”

-

It’s October, I’m starting research on one or two new projects, just little stuff that’s in MS Notepad or in my Moleskine notebooks.

Also, I’m watching a lot of horror movies as I count down to my Halloween (the better half and I are going to see The Get Up Kids in concert) and start editing draft number whatever of my Master’s thesis (which I have been working on forever).

More Sharpie sketches, random news on The Underground, calls for artists, and all that jazz probably next week. I’m still settling into the groove of this newer site, but I think I’ll probably be posting stuff about 3 times a week give or take. Or whenever I feel like, we’ll see. For now, I’m just getting through the day so I can go home and watch Community and It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia on TV with my girlfriend.

The Get Up Kids at the Avalon on September 24, 2009. This show was more sentimental than their reuni

The Get Up Kids at the Avalon on September 24, 2009.

This show was more sentimental than their reunion five or six years ago. It really was a personal experience, sharing the memories of my adolescence with a room full of strangers, who I like to imagine were also being carried away by the same collective swell of nostalgia, singing all the words to the same songs that chronicled our youth.

Then all it takes is some overgrown drunken douche-bro fan to deck you hard in the face, and we’re not fifteen anymore.

That’s when you realize all the frontmen are wearing wedding bands, Bazan has gone God-sick again, and you have someone else’s blood in your hair.

It’s official.
Growing up kind of sucks.

recap central. this is going to take a muthafuckin while. son.

thursday, september 17th, 2009
was bumming around seattle and headed down to portland with peter for musicfest nw! son! had some fucking wristband problems because the willamette weekly office closed by the time we got to portland, and so i had to call a publicist chick and arrange some shit. i got a vip wristband, holla! which ruled! and peter got some really random wristband, and we couldn’t figure out what the fuck it was, but it worked! just in time for explosions in the sky! woulda been a bummer if it hadn’t worked out, cause that was the ONE band peter REALLY wanted to see. for me, it was okay, but i was tired of standing and couldn’t see anything, so i sat half the time. and kinda coulda fell asleep, don’t remember if i actually did or not. stayed that night at micah’s house! they had a fucking rad ass set up! we each had a bed to sleep on! not really sure what that was the case, but MOTHAFUCKIN RULE!!!

friday, september 18th, 2009
journal notes based on recap i wrote on my ipod touch:
- woke up
- cuddled furiously with cat: micah’s cat, harvey (named after two-face), is hellzaz cuuuute.
- drove to lloyd center: to hop on the max / leave peter’s car there.
- taco trucks downtown: actually, i had a veggie sammich.
- park to eat (metal detector guy): there was a guy scavenging the waterfront park for who knows what.
- walk to rei: picked up my backpack, yay!
- willamette (not williamette!) weekly office: yeah, i didn’t know it was actually willamette weekly, so i felt like an idiot mispronouncing it about a zillion times. went to the office and got an extra set of wristbands! kinda (details forthcoming).
- streetcar: took streetcar for free, wee!
- powell’s: stopped by and read sedaris for a while.
- post office: had to mail some shite. actually, thought i did but didn’t have the address, so i just bought envelopes instead for future mailings.
- furious quest for pencil sharpener: so i could put up these art printouts. no dice.
- get back to car! no keys!: a fucking nightmare! peter dropped his keys “in portland somewhere”! holy shit!

[[ for some reason the notes skip some shit here, which is just crazy!! here's what happened in between... ]]
had to give alex and jimena coffee, so they were near lloyd center and were going to meet up with us, but oh no, the car’s locked. luckily, they had triple a, so they got a tow paid for. unfortunately, fucking volkswagen has crazy security precautions and they couldn’t unlock the car because it would set off the alarm for life or something. mofos. waited around for peter’s friend to pick us up. crap, i forgot his name; that’s some bad form! wtf is his name… time to dig through emails… oh yes, sam. anyhoot, we planned to stay at sam’s for that night, but first we saw some shows. 9:00pm: say hi (eh); 10:00pm: monotonix (eh, same ol’ same ol’); 11:00pm: bad brains (they looked very sleepy); 11:00pm: mount eerie (good… well, their darker stuff was good, anyway); 12:00am: japanther (i thought they were okay before but today it was kinda meh); 12:00am: the long winters (we only caught the encore of their set but holy shit, it left me fucking speechless for a bit. i wish i had fucking recorded it. why didn’t i record it? i can’t even remember. something about conserving battery for portugal. the man the next day because i’d forgotten to bring my camera charger. but i REALLY should have recorded it.); 1:00am: two cow garage (the band was ridiculous, their fans were ridiculous, but it was all quite entertainingly ridiculous. just look at their name for the love of god!)… anyways, after the show, went home and crashed. back to notes.

- guy askin bout y asian girls don’t like brothas: as i was walking around downtown during show times, some black guy stopped me and asked if he could ask me a question about asian girls, and i said, “sure,” and he said, “why don’t asian girls ever talk to brothas?” and i said, “i’m talking to you,” and he said, “yeah, you are, but you’re probably on your way to meet your white or asian boyfriend,” and i’m like, “nope, i’m not on my way to meet anyone,” and he’s like, “you drink?” and i’m like, “not really,” and he’s like, “you smoke bud?” and i’m like, “sometimes,” and he’s like, “you want some?” and i’m like, “nahh,” and he just left without really saying anything. lol.

saturday, september 19th, 2009
- woke up
- read sedaris: his new book is one i’ve been whittling away at every time i go to powell’s bookstore. i’m more than halfway through it and will finish it within a couple more trips to powell’s, i guarantee it!!!! sam and girlfriend had it at their house, so i read it first thing in the morning.

[[ notes end again ]]
sleep setup was not a bed, but it was couch cushions laid on the floor with sheets and sleeping bag on top of it. it was actually pretty godamn comfy. could not complain. what’d we do today………….. bummed around for a long time. interviewed john gourley from portugal. the man around 4:00pm and there was some crazy guy who kinda interrupted our interview. but it was all in good fun and mr. gourley is a little too ridiculously talented and kind and good-looking. kind of. ridiculous. like, really. how can one human have so much! anyhoot. it was a swell interview. ate some thai food with peter after. mmmm. nom. dude, i think. i’m so confused about what happened when, haha. saw some music at nighttime. 8:00pm: dr. loomis (whatevers metal girl-fronted shit); 8:00pm: drug rug (it was okay); 9:00pm: crom (uh… can we say amazing? fucking hilariously filthy lead singer! — see peter’s review here); 9:40pm: portugal. the man (definitely a fucking good live act, although i think their old stuff is more adequate for uber showmanship than their new stuff — see video here and here); 10:45pm: the get up kids (i’d wanted to see a couple songs for nostalgia’s sake, but i saw part of one and it was MEHHH); 11:00pm: church (second time seeing them… pretty damn entertaining); 11:00pm: grouper (ambient music is okay to listen to but kinda boring to watch); 12:00am: om (fucking amazing — show review here). went home, instantly crashed. oh yeah, turns out peter’s car won’t be fixed until monday or something. so we have to figure out a way back home or something.

having some fun inside of the doug fir.

some fun outside of the doug fir.

sunday, september 20th, 2009
time to gigga-go!!!! had to get some car shit taken care of cause turns out like, third-party companies can make copies of peter’s key but volkswagen can’t. what kinda shit!! ridonkulous. so we go to eat thai food — which rules — and then do that shit. meet up with aaron, john, and gina briefly while they’re eating brunch at some totally hoppin spot cause i didn’t think there’d be a chance to meet up with them, but turns out they’re going to see the chapman swifts — as we are — that night. so i’ll see them later, but lunch was fun. hung out at sam’s for a while doing some work, and then just went to the chapman swallows at nighttime before leaving town. aaron, john, and gina met us up and we all had a fun old time watching crazy birds diving into a chimney. every year, during september, these birds live in a chimney for a while, and they just fly out of the chimney in the morning and into it at sundown. aweeeesooooommmmmmme!!!! SEE PIC! (did not capture the complete awesomeness.)

This Trees thing annoys me. Really I hate the way it’s being heralded as the savior of Deep Ellum, despite the fact that the bar is catering to the Firewater set by bringing in bands who are sans radio play, and were popular for like a second in about 1998 (Looking directly at you Powerman 5000, and really who would have thought a Ozzfest band would take their name from a Kinks album.). Seriously, there were 4 news stations there covering it’s opening, Vanilla Ice sold out the place, and various media outlets are have continually gone ape shit with coverage of the places exploits.

The fact of the matter is what John Is does with Parade of Flesh is a thousand times more influential to the “scene” down there then anything Trees has done so far. Seriously, the man tirelessly books a wide variety of quality acts in various clubs in the area, and doesn’t get a quarter of the press that shitty bar gets, and that’s a tragedy.

I’m taking this space to thank John for the hard work, Parade of Flesh continues to book some of the top shows in the area, and it’s much appreciated.

Big week around these parts folks, take a look at the shows, and start making plans to go out.

Monday

Speaking of Parade Of Flesh they giving you Sweedish metal with Burst, Zororoaster and Four Days to Burn at The Lounge On Elm St, not my type of thing, but if you love metal it’s the show for you.

Peelander-Z=Costumes, J-punk, and a righteous good show. The Birthday Suits and Stew! are opening for them at Rubber Gloves. How the hell is Giggle Party no on this bill?

Tuesday
