A Nightmare on Elm Street is a 1984 American horror film directed and written by Wes Craven, and the first film of the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. The film features John Saxon, Heather Langenkamp, Ronee Blakley, Amanda Wyss, Jsu Garcia, Robert Englund and Johnny Depp in his feature film debut. Set in the fictional Midwestern town of Springwood, Ohio, the plot revolves around several teenagers being terrorized in their nightmares by the ghost of a serial child murderer named Fred Krueger.

Craven produced A Nightmare on Elm Street on an estimated budget of just $1.8 million, a sum the film earned back during its first week. Grossing $25.5 million at the United States box office, A Nightmare on Elm Street has become one of the most popular entries in the horror genre and the film’s villain, Fred Krueger, has become one of the most well recognized villains in cinema history. Both critics and Craven have mentioned that the film owes some of its success to John Carpenter’s Halloween (1978), which was very influential in spawning a long line of slasher films and originating many clichés found in low-budget horror films of the 1980s and 1990s.

The film’s premise is the question of the distinction between dreams and reality. The villain, Fred Krueger, exists in the “dream world” yet can kill in the “real world”. Sequels to the original would continue to confuse dreams and reality, before finally confusing art and reality by showing Heather Langenkamp, playing a fictionalized version of herself, haunted by the villain of a series of films in which she has had a major part in reality. Critics praised the film’s ability to transgress “the boundaries between the imaginary and real”, toying with audience perceptions. Some movie historians interpreted this overriding theme as a social subtext, “the struggles of adolescents in American society”, and their overwhelming need to confront “the harsh realities of life”.

Silence of the Lambs author Robert Harris says Roman Polanski is busy fininishing the movie The Ghost from his cell. Harris, who penned the screenplay, said despite Polanski not being able to make phone calls he is communicating through other means  to finish the movie in time for the Berlin film festival in February.The story is about a British prime minister accused of war crimes. Hmm, let me guess he is innocent?

Psst I wouldn’t be surprised  if it doesn’t get a nomination for the Academy Awards next year!

L’opera uscira’ in Francia a marzo, secondo quanto ha dichiarato Jerme Seydoux, copresidente dei circuiti cinematografici Pathe’ e Gaumont. La notizia, riportata da Premiere online, lascia supporre che, se il regista restera’ in carcere, sara’ qualcun altro ad incaricarsi del suono e delle musiche del film, di cui Polanski non ha finito la postproduzione.

CAMERAS – ACTION – STOP!

The Times says that completion of the film ‘The Ghost’ is in jeopardy after Roman Polanski’s arrest in Switzerland.

I have to admit to being surprised that none of Polanski’s supporters has so far raised this as a possible outcome, since many of them must be thinking it, as well as ruminating on the possibility of some kind of conspiracy to put a STOP to the film.

Robert Harris, "The Ghost" writer. His thinly disguised portrait of former PM Tony Blair raised eyebrows and questions of disloyalty. Now he supports Polanski, the arrested director who is filming "The Ghost".

Earlier tonight I added my thoughts on this at the Huffington Post in an Andy Ostroy article referring critically to Robert Harris’s New York Times article.

Harris’s “Why now” question typifies his thinking. He is a conspirator of the first order, exemplified by his book and Polanski’s present film “The Ghost”. This, for those who do not yet know, is about a former British prime minister who loses his popularity following an “illegal war”, in the end losing his life at the hands of the irate father of a dead soldier. The PM bears a striking resemblance to a certain Tony Blair. In fact, it IS meant to be all about said former PM.

So, if I were a conspiracy theorist, which I am decidedly NOT, and I were asking “cui bono” in Harris’s voice, I might be wondering if anyone had any interest in stopping the production and distribution of this film.

NOT because many of the maladjusted in this world might see this film as a green flag to encourage them to administer their own form of “justice” as a result of believing its nonsense, although that is important. NOR because the Iraq war Inquiry has just started in Britain, although that may be significant too. NOR because of any secrets (and lies) that may be spread and believed, such as that the wife of the former PM is outed as an American spy. (This fantastical “disclosure” is not known by the main character until moments before he is blown to smithereens.) NOR even because of the book’s/film’s criticisms of the US/British relationship and their secret services, or of any real or imagined disclosures.

But if I had a conspiratorial mindset, I might be asking this:

Disregarding for a moment the pursuit of a convicted fugitive, who or what benefits by the discontinuation of the production of this film? And the answer is NOT an American judge, or the victim (who has already sued Polanski), or Tony Blair (who may soon be the president of the EU), or freedom of poetic licence.

Who or what benefits by putting a stop to this film is clear to me – free, but responsible expression.

The enemies of free expression often find it hard to separate fact from fiction, and sadly they run amongst us even here in the “informed” west.

Until we all learn responsibility in tandem with populist, money-making rights in our free expression society, make sure your sins, movie-makers, are little ones.

Just as well I am not a conspiracy theorist.

Apart from all that meandering, Polanski is a convicted paedophile.

You’d think even Harris would “get” this.

UPDATE 6th Oct: Swiss Justice Ministry refuses to release Polanski pending a decision on exradition
According to the Ministry, there’s still a high risk that Polanski might go on the run if released from custody.

The French government has dropped its support for Polanski saying he is ‘neither above nor beneath the law’. Puzzled by the language? Moi ausi. Poland is equivocating in its earlier support for Polanski, and Labour MP Denis MacShane has called on the Council of Europe to support Polanski’s extradition to the USA, saying that the film-maker “should be held accountable” for his actions.

From CBC News: “In fact, earlier this year, well before Polanski’s arrest in Switzerland, she (the victim, Samantha Geimer) filed a formal appeal to the Los Angeles prosecutor’s office asking for the charges to be dropped. A few years ago, she sued the filmmaker and received an undisclosed settlement.”

WHAT GHOSTLY INTEREST DO POLANSKI, HARRIS, FREARS  & CO SHARE?

Stephen Frears – he of the “chop off (Blair’s) head and stick it on a spear” infamy (see here), has spoken out in support of Roman Polanski, following the latter’s arrest in Switzerland for his conviction for the admitted rape of a child over 30 years ago.

Yes, you read it right.

A film director (Frears) is supporting another film director (Polanski) who admitted abusing a child and is a convicted, fugitive rapist.

This Frears – a one-man horror show – is the film director who wants summary justice meted out to our former prime minister.  No trial of course, before the death penalty.  Just an everyday beheading and a display of the bloody consequences in the public square.  Despite there being no capital punishment in Britain or Europe even for convicted criminals, Frears’ hope is for Tony Blair to get his  ‘just’ desserts.

But for Polanski – ah, well, that’s different.

It surely is. VERY different.

Frears and his luvvie likes have long been free in the freedom-loving west to incite the murder of a politician or of any individual they happen to dislike.  I consider that a weakness in our freedom of expression laws. With a film like this many half-sane and gullible individuals could interpret it as a free pass to do as they see fit, and “right wrongs”. Try the same trick in many of the Middle Eastern countries they constantly claim to represent and these artistes would part company with their heads in no time.

But when it comes to supporting a convicted child-molesting criminal who happens to be one of them, well, PURLE-E-E-E-ASE!

Let’s not complicate things by bringing morals and justice into this.

It’s suddenly all about artistic freedom.

What a load of self-serving codswallop!!!!

‘GHOST’ WRITER ROBERT HARRIS & FRIENDS

Yet the frightful Frears is not the only values-vacant fool supporting Polanski.

Described as “bizarre” here there are dozens of other arty types leaping to Polanski’s defence. Aren’t these the same people, on the whole, who see political decisions with which they disagree as hanging offences?

[Aside: And today, Barrister to the Left, Michael Mansfield QC argued on Radio 4's "Today" (listen here, 6 mins) that Polanski should be released.  Mansfield said, "There's a distinction to be drawn between extremely serious crimes, of the kind that might be genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity ... and I think one has to consider how best to deploy resources ... at the moment the resources are best devolved towards investigating and solving crimes ... in Guinea, in Gaza ... which are so horrific that they need to be dealt with now. The Polanski case is a very different one ... he pleaded guilty, there was supposed to be a deal ... but where the victim herself is saying enough is enough ... this is the point where we do say as she does let's put our resources elsewhere.  Prosecutors should be allowed to make discretionary decisions."]

Would Mansfield say the same if the accused fugitive were Tony Blair? No way. Never. Not ever. Even if Blair were in his 70s. “Justice” would be Mansfield’s middle name.

Robert Harris, who says he is “shocked and stunned” by Roman Polanski’s arrest, possesses a lively imagination. Harris’s interest? His book, ‘The Ghost’ is his attempt to destroy the reputation of Tony Blair. It is also the basis of Polanski’s present unfinished work.

The novel is  clearly part of Harris’s personal bitter animus towards Mr Blair, and part of his money-making ambitions on the back of others’ political abilities. All very palatable to the gullible, just desperate to swallow it all unquestioningly as they part with their pennies.

And, some might say, useful stuff to hit the airwaves just as the Iraq war Inquiry gets underway.

This movie, like ‘The Trial of Tony Blair’, is designed to satisfy and strengthen the mind-wandering delusions of conspiracy theorists everywhere to the point of their even greater delusion and worse, the muddying and distortion of the real truth.

‘The Ghost’ ends with the once highly popular British prime minister being blown to smithereens by the father of a soldier killed in an ‘illegal’ war. But before the unfortunate former PM meets his untimely but obviously deserved end, he discovers that his wife of 30 years has been double-crossing both him and Britain and has been a long-time American secret agent.

A kind of double shattering.

Ooops! Sorry. Have I inadvertently let slip the ending?

Didn’t spoil it for you, did I?

Never mind. That means you can avoid spending your money on watching this cra… carping insult to living people.

I’M NOT INTO CONSPIRACIES, BUT I DO HOPE THE STALLING OF ‘THE GHOST’ IS ONE

It’s purely co-incidental, of course, that Roman Polanski is the director and Robert Harris the writer of the book upon which the film “The Ghost” is based.  And purely tough luck that Roman Polanski’s arrest in Switzerland has left his latest film in limbo. More here

Roman Polanski’s wife has asked a host of film stars to join her fight to prevent the director being extradited to America. The 76-year-old Oscar-winner – who fled the US to France in 1978 after being convicted of unlawful sex with a minor – was arrested on Saturday in Zurich, Switzerland, and faces being sent back to the US so his actress wife Emanuelle Seigner has begun compiling a petition calling for his release.

Emmanuelle  … is hoping A-list stars and important figures in the film industry will sign the sign the petition.

“Emmanuelle is outraged. She is rallying friends and colleagues from many years in the film industry.”

British director Stephen Frears …. and writer Robert Harris have already spoken out in support and Emmanuelle is convinced more stars will show their support.

In 1977, Roman pleaded guilty to charges of having underage sex with 13-year-old Samantha Gailey, now known as Samantha Geimer. He believed he would face a jail term of just 42 days, and claimed a judge had reneged on a plea bargain deal to reduce the charges from rape and serious sexual assault if he admitted under-age sex.

Polanski – director of a host of acclaimed movies, including 1968’s ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ – plied Samantha with alcohol and sedatives while photographing her for a magazine shoot at actor Jack Nicholson’s Hollywood home. Nicholson was not present at the time of the incident. Read more here

Roman Polanski’s arrest in Switzerland has put his latest film, The Ghost in limbo.
According to the director’s ICM agent, Jeff Berg, Polanski “had completed much of the editing on The Ghost. But other postproduction work, including music scoring and sound mixing, had yet to be done.”

The Ghost is based on the novel from Robert Harris. It stars Pierce Brosnan as the fictional former British leader Adam Lang. Ewan McGregor plays a ghostwriter that is hired to help complete Lang’s memoirs. Other members of the cast are Kim Cattrall, Tom Wilkinson, Olivia Williams and James Belushi.

The film does not yet have distribution in the U.S., but it has distribution in many territories overseas.

Also, Polanski’s French lawyer Herve Temime says that the director is going to fight extradition to the U.S. In a statement Temime said that he would ask Swiss authorities to release the 76-year-old director immediately.

“After that, his defense team will demonstrate the illegal nature of the extradition request he is facing,” he stated. “He is in a fighting mood and determined to defend himself.”

Polanski left America in 1978 when he pled guilty to having unlawful sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl in Los Angeles.

He was arrested over the weekend in Zurich. He had traveled there to receive a lifetime achievement award from the Zurich Film Festival.

The Ghost is Polanski’s first movie with a U.S. setting since 1974’s Chinatown. Areas in Germany doubled for the story’s New England settings.

It is currently not known when work might continue on The Ghost. Berg remains optimistic about his client’s ability to work this situation out.

“I’m always optimistic when it comes to Roman,” Berg stated. “He’s strong, and he has survived every situation imaginable.”

As I said in my previous post, I will be keeping everyone updated on Polanki’s new film ‘The Ghost’ as it develops. In all his awesomeness, Polanski has released a very short (“very very fucking short”, Alex says) trailer that gets me (as well as the entire film viewing community) salivating with excitement. Ewan McGregor plays a ghost writer for Britain’s former Prime Minister, played by Pierce Brosnan. Nothing more needs to be said……….

As I said, its very short….but still guaranteed to be amazing. Kaching!

Closed hearing suggests Cardenas is trying for a deal

After hooded federal agents whisked the reputed head of the Gulf Cartel drug trafficking syndicate from a Mexican prison to Houston to face justice nearly three years ago, he was branded by authorities as among the most notorious and feared gangsters in the world.

But now, just weeks before Osiel Cardenas Guillen’s blockbuster trial is set to begin, his lawyers and federal prosecutors are jousting behind closed courtroom doors and suddenly banned by the judge from discussing one of the most notorious cartel cases in the nation.

Could U.S. prosecutors be brokering a deal with Cardenas in exchange for telling what he knows about Mexico’s underworld, including who has been on his payroll?

Recent records on the case were sealed by the judge, raising questions about whether there will be a trial. Cardenas’ defense team has spent well over 10,000 hours preparing for it, but last Thursday Cardenas had a 90-minute “re-arraignment” before U.S. District Judge Hilda Tagle, according to court documents.

A re-arraignment is almost always conducted for a change of plea. Cardenas has pleaded not guilty to all charges, but the court file in the case is silent on whether he changed his plea, if negotiations broke down, or if some other matter was discussed.

For reasons that have not been made public, the judge ordered the hearing closed, and a deputy federal marshal escorted a Houston Chronicle reporter from the courtroom.

And though all recent documents are sealed, the latest entry in the court file reads “terminate deadlines and hearings.”

Tagle, the judge, is assigned to Brownsville, but is presiding over Cardenas’ case in Houston.

And now for a quick update. Local time: 12:41 PM. Pardons the typos.

Shrewsbury was a blast. We drank at a number of pubs and eateries. We had sparking wine in a garden patio. Dinner at Amy’s brother’s work. Drinks and kings game on the patio of the Shrewsbury hotel. I ate a prawn crisp that was apparently suitable for vegetarians. We drove to a 24 hour Tesco for more alcohol but I bought a pie instead. We got pulled over by the police for driving too fast. And then I mumbled something about a nasty reply in the NME regarding Sam’s show review before passing out.

We woke up to an English breakfast but not before I crawled in bed with Sam and Amy to wake them up with love (hahaha). Getting to the train station at 9:51 when our train was at 9:50 was epic timing, since it was a couple minutes late. Meeting and spending the weekend with Amanda and Adam and their roommate Ben was wicked. Going to a bar where Frankenstein “wakes up” every night was…AWESOME. Oh man. Eff. Such a good night. Getting a sub at Subway asking for Italian on the side didn’t happen. At all. So difficult.

Sunday — Edinburgh castle. Beautiful beautiful beautiful. Epic lupper at Advocate pub. Double mixers for the price of a single if you’re a student! Haunted walk — “That was the weirdest thing that’s ever happened to me in my entire life.” I want to explain this:

We were hurdled around a few places and it was fun and not scary. The alleyways where we were explained the term “shit faced” and other areas involving witch hunts and consequences. We were taken into the “vaults” where the lower classes used to occupy including rapists, murders, thieves, and beggars, along with homeless families and children. The rooms were separated into levels. We were standing in a level 1 room at first. These levels referred to the amount of spiritual/ghostly activity that was monitored in the rooms by professional paranormal scientists and people studying this sort of thing. I was fine for once, and prouid of myself. If you know me, I think this kind of thing is AWESOME.

We moved into a level 2 room where there was a stone circle. Our guide told us not to ouch it or go inside and if we did they had absolutely no responsibility to get us out. They were serious. The room was once a pagan temple where a man (can’t remember name) ran it and decided to spend the night in the circle to prove that the spirits in the room hadn’t gone from a good positive aura to a mysteriously bothering one like the witches had claimed. The circle is often seen as a protective emblem in Wiccan rituals. He stayed the night and all was fine until 4AM-ish when he heard footsteps that came from the hall and circled him in the circle until a scratching noise rose above his head on the ceiling. He cursed the circle and it’s been unsafe ever since. People who’ve entered the circle experience a strange change, and/or scratches on their backs or chests or faces. Our guides have seen this happen. No one entered the circle in our group.

The third room was a level 3 area. There are no lights. The electricity works but a brand new light bulb only lasts 5 minutes maximum in that room. The separated the males from the females because they claimed the spirits would do it for you. The female guide was thoroughly creeped out by this room and it was obvious. The females entered on the right side where the force wasn’t as strong and as I entered the middle of the room to the right, I felt dizzy. She bagan to talk about the significance of the room and I couldn’t hear her. I told myself it was mind over matter and tried to focus but I couldn’t. I felt my heart and it was beating faster than I thought it could. I looked to the door and, five feet away, I didn’t think I would make it out. I starting spinning and said, “I have to leave,” making my way for the door. I didn’t think I would make it.

When I left the room I felt this massive weight release from my chest and, at that, I began to cry myself into the shoulder of the girl standing in the hallway. I had trouble catching my breath and my nose began to run so heavily that it was dripping off my chin. I was sweating and light headed and, basically, scared shitless. I’ve never, ever, ever experienced something is strong before.

Our guide followed me out and was genuinely interested in exactly how I was feeling and what I felt. I didn’t want to talk to him. All I could say was, “Holy fuck, that was fucked up.” After telling me about the room, shining his flashlight on my head he said, “Wait, do you have red hair?” I obviously do and it turns out there was a rapist that stayed in that room. During excavations they found baggies of red hair where he slept, so that may be why I felt the way I did. Our guide said he’d never encountered a red head who had such trouble with the room. I asked him if I could go back in and he said, “Personally, I will not take you back in. No way,” so I didn’t get to go. He forbade it.

David told me later that the girl said that a lot of women experience a tightness or squeezing feeling in their chest when they enter that room. I definitely felt that. It was so odd and surreal. I can’t even believe I experienced that. Replaying it in my head, all I can think is that I want to go back and I want to last longer. I honestly thought my heart was going to stop. That’s scary as ‘h.’

In any case, we ended up in a pub beside the vaults where the tunnels were turned into dance rooms. I cried uncontrollably before medicating my tears with vodka orange. Sigh.

I want to look up “Most aunted Live!”, a TV show that has featured that room 5 or 6 times now. I want to learn more.

We’re in Dublin now! We went to Doune yesterday to see the Monty Python Castle. Epic! Going to do Irish things now (aka. Drink!!).
