Director – Gregory Wilson

Cast – Blythe Auffarth, Daniel Manche, Blanche Baker, Grand Show, Graham Patrick Martin, Benjamin Ross Kaplan, Austin William, William Atherton

Release Year – 2007

Reviewed by John of the Dead

This is a film I had been reading on for quite some time, but could never get my hands on it reasonably. I was finally able to view this film and all I can say after finishing this piece is “WOW.”. Not an overly excited wow, but just a shocked and disbelieving “WOW.”. Based on the novel by Jack Ketchum, which is based on true events I will explain later in the review, this flick is a shocker that is sure to leave itself imprinted on your mind for quite some time.

“The Girl Next Door” follows two sisters who recently lost their parents in an accident. The older of the two sisters, Meg(Blythe Auffarth), came out of the accident with a few scars. Her younger sister Susan(Madeline Taylor) unfortunately came out of the accident in a much more crippling condition, and has contracted polio. The girls are sent to live in a quiet suburban country town with their Aunt Ruth(Blanche Baker) and her young sons. The rest of the film tells the story of the unspeakable events and baseless punishments the aunt puts the two girls through and the struggle of a young boy who tries but cannot succeed at helping them.

I can honestly say that I have not seen a film this horrific in a very long time. This film is like Cannibal Holocaust but without trying to be Cannibal Holocaust. We don’t get immense gore in this film, and that is what really shocked me. How is it that a film with very little gore can be so downright disturbing? Easy, it is executed properly and is very well written. Only his second film, director Gregory Wilson did an amazing job with this film and with the message it meant to convey. Much like Frank Darabont’s “The Mist”, this film WILL PISS YOU OFF! Now is that a good thing? Not really, I don’t like being pissed off BUT I do have immense respect for films that move you that much. This film’s intention is to anger you, and it succeeds greatly at what it sets out to do. This is not one of those hard-to-watch flicks that only throws in such horrific scenes simply to supply the viewer with baseless torture porn. No, this flick uses such scenes to show just what the young girl went through at the hands of some of the cruelest people to make the silver screen. I applaud this film’s director for having to guts to include what he did, and this film’s two writers Daniel Ferrands(who wrote “Halloween 6: The Curse of Michael Myers”) and Philip Nutman also get credit for this film’s gutsy nature by including the acts that occurred in the novel and in real life.

Real life? Yes, REAL LIFE. The novel this film is based on is based on the true events that occurred in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1965. 16 year old Sylvia Likens was brutally assaulted and tortured to death by her caretaker and a few of her cohorts her parents had entrusted her with during their three month absence as traveling carnies. I could go into more detail, but I’ll leave that up to you if you decide to look further into this case. Here is the Wikipedia link, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sylvia_Likens.

Is it surprising to you as it is to me that a horror film that claims to be “based on true events” is ACTUALLY based on true events? Time and time again we get films that claim to be “based” or “inspired” by events that occurred somewhere in time, but this is usually just a marketing gimmick or AT THE VERY MOST the film is only based on 10 percent of the story it claims to be based on. Example: “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” claiming to be inspired by true events, particularly of the serial killer Ed Gein who would dig up corpses and use their skin and other body parts for various uses. Gein never chased anyone with a chainsaw. Never.

Now you will notice some differences between this film and the story it is based on, but the differences are small and are in fact needed in order to help the film appeal to the viewer. As far as the actual plot is concerned, this film is dead accurate. I really liked how the young boy named “David” was added to the story, and his conflict in the film is felt by the viewer. You see the toll these events take on the young boy, and his struggles to betray his friends(who not only outnumber him but are mostly older than him as well) and get help from the young girls.

I have no major complaints for this flick, although I felt the film’s conclusion(in flashback mode) was not very satisfying. Sure it did not follow the actual events that took place, but after all the torment and turmoil we were forced to sit though, I wanted to see some awesome vengeance and redemption.

Overall, this is a positive watch that I dare all horror fans to sit through and not squirm in their seats. Not only is this flick not for the squeamish, but it sends powerful message and shows just how savage some people can be.

Rating: 7/10

Timothy Olyphant

Have you seen “The Girl Next Door” ? It is a fun comedy: a teenager (Emile Hirsch) falls in love with the girl next door (Elisha Cuthbert). The problem is she’s a porn star and her producer Kelly (Timothy Olyphant) doesn’t have any plans of letting her live a cute fantasy with her boyfriend. It’s a funny, harmless little movie and this is the first movie I have ever seen Timothy Olyphant in. The thing is I just thought Kelly was a nuisance and a morally corrupt character and didn’t think much of him. It wasn’t a difficult role. And I didn’t even find him remotely attractive.

Timothy Olyphant in The Girl Next Door

And I completely forgot about him. Then I saw Catch and Release.

CATCH AND RELEASE (2006)

Timothy Olyphant and Jennifer Garner in Catch and Release

I actually didn’t even recognize him. He didn’t look that different and it wasn’t like he had a wild change with his image. But this role was completely different.

Gray is barely hanging on. Her fiancé has just died, she is broke and his friends are basically are all she’s got. So she moves in with Dennis and Sam. And Fritz is sticking around for some reason, though he seems to be getting on everybody’s nerves. Gray has accidentally witnessed Fritz having sex at the funeral and she has been mad at him ever since. But as time passes, Gray discovers some truths about her dead fiancé and realizes that maybe he wasn’t as great as he thought he was. First she finds out he has a secret account she never knew about and has been regularly sending money to a person- and then she learns that person is the mother of his child. To make matter worse, he has been cheating on her. While Sam is lost in his own depression and Dennis seems way too considerate for a friend, it is Fritz that helps her cope with these new facts and helps her have fun. Fritz may not be perfect, but he is not the jerk she thought he was.

Timothy Olyphant as Fritz

The minute you see Fritz, you just want Gray to get over her fiancé’s death and her hatred for Fritz soon and well, hang out with Fritz so that he will have much screen time. He is good-looking, fun and whatever stupid things he might have done, it is not that easy to judge him since he has lost a close friend and everybody has a different way of coping. And you want her to stop mourning when you realize the guy was a tw0-timing liar and had been with another woman for years without her knowing it. And the more you know Fritz, the more like him. He is fun, sweet and well gorgeous. So it is weird falling for your fiancés friend and him falling for you, but it is a fun, emotional film. It is not original but then I don’t think it ever tried to be. It is also a question of how well we really know the people we think we know really well.

Below is the link to one of my favorite scenes. Gray has just found out that her fiancés kid is much younger than Fritz initially told him, which means he had been cheating on her for years. Fritz was just trying to soften the blow on her. Now, she is very mad at her fiancé- which is good, so she doesn’t really feel guilty about Fritz. The scene also happens to be one of the best kisses in a movie. Impulsive and passionate, and still managing to be gentle:

DEADWOOD (2004-2006)

Timothy Olyphant as Seth Bullock in Deadwood

It’s a western/drama/thriller and Timothy Olyphant is one of the leads. If you have seen Deadwood after Catch and Release, it is a lot more surprising to see Timothy go all wild west on his audience. As Fritz, he was an advertising hotshot with a place in Malibu. Here, he is a much more complicated character as the Sheriff. He is not nearly as composed, and as a modern man for his time, he seems to have a hard time excepting the horrifying level of crime and violence going on in the town. He has 0 tolerance for betrayal and he prefers speaking his mind to acting diplomatically. The show has two seasons and it is highly rated.

The movie also uses a very free language, meaning: brace yourself for some R-rated dialogue. Note that one of the characters’ names is Swearengen and it is not a coincidence.

Live free or Die Hard

Timothy Olyphant as the villain in Live Free or Die Hard

There are two impressive things about Timothy, one about his looks and one about his acting. Now, Timothy is normally a young-looking actor. In Catch and Release, I just couldn’t believe he was 37! However a year later, he plays the villain in the 4th movie of the Die Hard series and he suddenly looks seasoned. He didn’t age overnight,of course. He is just really good at adapting to his role. He had to be a guy who seeked vengeance for what felt like wrong doing on his part and he just takes this revenge thing on everyone. It just wouldn’t look convincing if he looked like a man fresh out of college; his nemesis is Bruce Willis, for god’s sake! However, Tim’s character is one of the coolest, most cold-blooded villains seen on screen- and he brought the role facial expressions I had never seen him do before. I don’t know a lot of actors who can do that. Yes, there are a lot of good actors but their expressions/way of acting don’t really differ that much or cease surprising you at one point. The last time I was pleasantly surprised like this was by Robert De Niro’s performance in Stardust- I have seen his 3 decades of movies and it was the first time a role of his and his portrayal surprised me.

It is not just Tim’s performance though. Live Free or Die Hard is a solid action movie. It sure includes some physically impossible stuff but hey it is John McClane we are talking about, it is expected. The explosions and chasing and plotting are great. The villain is not just muscles, but brains- who doesn’t mind getting his hands dirty/bloody when he needs to. His smooth delivery and coolness make an impressive, chilly effect.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khwHUyt-CYQ&feature=related is the trailer.

HITMAN (2007)

Timothy Olyphant as Agent 47 in Hitman

Hitman is based on a very popular computer game. Agent 47 has been raised as a kid to be the perfect assassin. No emotions, no complications. Just get the mission, get it done, and get out. An impressive bank balance, no conscience and no emotions. He can get himself out of any danger and you seriously do not want to mess with him. However some people do, and things go awry. After all, the people who “programmed” him have forgotten that no matter how “mechanic” they trained him to be, he is still human. He is also surprised to see he has some feelings he can’t define, which starts after meeting his female target: a Russian hooker (Olga Kurylenko), whose political figure boyfriend might very well involved in the conspiracy.

I actually laughed when some people commented that Timothy’s acting was flat. Did they pay attention to anything going on in the movie? 47 was raised to show and feel no signs of emotion. He is based on a computer character. He is supposed to be flat. But later with the Russian girl, he starts to feel a variety of mixed emotions and he portrays the different levels of reaction perfectly. The movie is fast and it is entertaining as hell. We go to different places in the world, including Russia and Turkey with the characters. There’s lots of action- both with weaponry and fighting. There is also a subtle sense of humor and it is fun to watch Agent 47 begin to change and how he deals with himself. A scene where she’s trying to seduce him and he gives her a sedative shot to get her off him is just plain hilarious. There is also a fun nod at the computer game. I like mindless action. Bring it on!!!

A PERFECT GETAWAY (2007)

A Perfect Getaway with Timothy Olyphant

Timothy is featured in the show Damages, but I already wrote about it. So I am gonna end the post with one of his latest movies, a thriller called A Perfect Getaway. I just got my hands on the movie and haven’t seen it yet but am quite looking forward to it. With this, Timothy is back to his familiar gorgeous look- which suits the exotic and dangerous vacation theme of the movie.

The great thing about him is that he is a very versatile actor. I could only feature some of his films here. He has had no problems playing a bisexual character falling for his gay boyfriend’s female best friend (Advice from a Caterpillar), a cold-blooded villain (Live Free or Die Hard), a highly professional killer (Hitman), a misunderstood nice guy (Catch and Release); an annoyingly slick TV reporter with no moral principles (Bill), a sheriff in the old west (Deadwood), a drug dealer (Go)….Well the list speaks for itself. It is great that he is very good-looking, and that he doesn’t show his 41 years- which gives him the opportunity to play more kinds of roles.

It is also impressive that he is married with 3 kids and that he has been married since 1991. He has been around for a while and it seems like the movie-makers seem are smart enough to take advantage of this skilled actor. Hope he gets the credit he deserves.

Following on with a horror theme for Halloween, it has been 36 years since famed zombie lover George

Following on with a horror theme for Halloween, it has been 36 years since famed zombie lover George A. Romero created one of his most loved films to date, The Crazies. It seems that Inevitably, along with many other old school horror movies, such as ‘Halloween‘ and ‘The Nightmare On Elm Street‘, having been made into remakes, with fairly successful reputations. The Crazies is no exception, with a theatre release set for February 26th, 2010, one can only hope; much like with other films mentioned, that it is equally, if not more popular than the original of it’s franchise.

The plot focuses on the inhabitants of a small Iowa town suddenly plagued by insanity and then death after a mysterious toxin contaminates their water supply. The 2010 version seems more like a reinvention than a remake where in the original the military attempts to contain a manmade combat virus that causes death and permanent insanity in those infected, as it overtakes a small Pennsylvania town.

Of course Mr. Romero is known for his influence in zombie culture over the last few decades, it may seem like his influence in the film may be irreplaceable, but is it really? New director Breck Eisner, aged 39 attended USC where other notable alumni include; Neil Armstrong, Will Farrell, George Lucas and Forest Whitaker, so it’s not like he wasn’t around an aura of success at a young age. From his previous work on the unappreciated film ‘The Sound Of Thunder‘, I expect good things from him. On a equally as important note, the cast members! Timothy Olyphant (The Girl Next Door, Hitman, Live Free Or Die Hard) will play the protagonist David Dutton, with Danielle Panabaker (Sky High, Yours, Mine and Ours, Friday The 13th) and Radha Mitchell (Phone Booth, Silent Hill, Surrogates) also making appearances within the film. What do you think will come of this remake?

Today I had the pleasure of seeing one of the newest romcoms in cinemas and the newest performance b

Today I had the pleasure of seeing one of the newest romcoms in cinemas and the newest performance by the notable Hayden Panettiere. I promise not to include too many spoilers to the energetic and full of life feature which can only be referred to as the cousin of ‘The Girl Next Door’.

The film follows the pursuits of a graduating valedictorian, Dennis Cooverman (Paul Rust) and his best friend Rich Munsch (Jack Carpenter) who are quite obviously portrayed as the socially extinct; bedroom bound geek which has struggled through the hardships of high school and the possibly gay yet somewhat suave friend, respectively. The film’s alternate protagonist is Beth Cooper (Hayden Panettiere), head cheerleader of the high school (more cheerleading roles?) who is quite obviously at the other end of the social spectrum. Her small group of friends include Cammy (Lauren London) and Treece (Lauren Storm), both close to Beth with Cammy seemingly tagging along (but rather good at doing so) and Treece being the stereotypical blonde (even though she’s more of a dirty blonde).

I have to admit, there were points where I had no control over the laughter that amounted, especially from scenes such as an amazing lightsaber VS skeleton battle, an epic wet towel fight, the use of tampons as plugs, and the battering of a dogger’s car. At first, whilst reading this you may be thinking ‘Oh, it’s one of those movies’, but I’m afraid I have to stop you there. ‘I Love You, Beth Cooper‘ is a profound and hilarious tell-tale story of whilst nice guy’s do finish last, they often find it’s worth it. Dennis spends a day in the light of someone he’s not and he discovers who he really is and who Beth Cooper, to his surprise, really is. This may be due to the fairly recognisable director; Chris Columbus, on the other hand it could be that it’s a genuinely good movie, and I’m pretty confident that I’ll be buying it once it’s released on DVD.

However I feel I have to mention that despite the overall entertaining performance it was not the most convincing I’ve seen. Some of the scenes, whilst incredibly quirky are unlike that from the book, referring to the lack of impression in comparison. Naturally, there have been very few cases in which a film has exceeded the novel it was born from, and unfortunately this cannot be classed as such. However, despite this, the film has managed to win me over and the light-hearted humour, and possibly some of the less light-hearted humour will keep you entertained all the way through, with a fantastic chance to see some of Miss. Panettiere playing a more diverse role.

This is my first time watching Miley Cyrus new song Party in The USA.

She’s really growing up fast and getting sexier every year.

I hope she stays the innocent girl next door.

Everyone who takes the sexy girl route, is passe after a few years.

I think the girls need to realize they look sexy without even trying?

The girl next door always attracts men more than a vixen who is dressed in scanty clothing.

The guys want a chick in a big cotton shirt with nothing on underneath.

They like to use their imagination when it comes to a woman.

Let’s take a trip… London’s Times has picked the top 50 paperbacks of 2009 as part

Let’s take a trip…

London’s Times has picked the top 50 paperbacks of 2009 as part of The Time’s WHSmith Paperback of the Year. (Apparently this is the only prize given to paperbacks in the UK). The judges have also picked a short list of 12 out of those 50 and will be counting down 12 weeks to the winner on Dec 12th.

I will admit – I have not read one book on the list. Now, in my defense my year has been extremely busy. And hey, one title has been on my “To Read” list.

One title in particular stood out – Stephanie Meyer’s The Host. Well, based on the Twilight series I didn’t understand this choice. And the description beside the title – “…a love triangle wit only two bodies.” Needless to say I had to read an excerpt and did on Stephanie Meyer’s site. Okay – at least the first 18 pages are written better than Twilight.

Back to my main point – how are these things chosen? Based on writing, popularity, copies sold? I’ve searched and haven’t yet found the answer. The judges include American author and critic (living in the UK) Erica Wagner, bestselling author Alexander McCall Smith (who has a really ugly website) and WHSmith bookbuyer Sandra Bradley.

Well, I won’t make you wait any longer. Here’s the list of 50, how many have you read? And if you want to read the whole article – they do give a fun, brief rundown of how paperbacks came to be – thanks to Penguin and Woolworth’s for making them big.

THE LONG LIST 50

IMO vaaleilla vaikutelma on enempi sellanen sassy hot, kun taas tummilla perus hot, ja kaunis. Mut either way, meitsille kelpais.

._____. Mut pointtina et Olivia on super hot, lahjakas ja VEGAANI, eli täydellinen päivän pimu! <3

Pitemmittä puheitta heitän tarjolle vähä O.C.:stä tuttua lesboiluvideoklippiä ja kuvia. Ny meitsi painuu pehkuihin unelmoimaan omasta Olivia Wildestä. Sommoro!

A few months ago I saw Into the Wild with the very talented actor Emile Hirsch. I loved the movie and really took a liking for Hirsch. Then, last night there was a movie on TV called The Girl Next Door, also with Hirsch – and I fell in love! The movie was kind of weird and a typical corny teen movie but with Hirsch in it, it became romantic and I foudn it hard to keep my eyes off him. He is truly gorgeous! Anyone else notice this?

EDIT: Bennett (who loves pointing out my flaws) brought to my attention that I’d misspelled EMILE’s name. Ooops!

Betyg: 3

So it’s a glorious and stormy Sunday afternoon and I’m in the midst of a pile of laundry

So it’s a glorious and stormy Sunday afternoon and I’m in the midst of a pile of laundry. I decided to stop for a while to stare at the lightning outside of my window and write a blog. (Even though I can’t post it until the Internet starts working again. WiFi and storms don’t work well together.)

Friday night was pretty fun. Courtney and I played Left 4 Dead, Courtney’s cousin Katie showed me this super cool website called Oddee, and Kim and I stayed up super late and cooked a pizza. We also all watched a twisted movie called The Girl Next Door, which I’m pretty sure was based off of the story of Sylvia Likens (I dunno if that’s spelt right), which was the first person in the United States to have a domestic abuse case filed. I think… -cough-

Anyway, Saturday was a great day too. We all slept until 11:30 AM, then played some more Left 4 Dead. Soon after we all changed into our bathing suits and went to Leebos for some Icees. Next stop: the Red River. Courtney took turns driving Kim and I around the river on her Jet Ski, and when it wasn’t our turn we would go swim with all of Kelsey’s friends that weren’t riding with Kelsey on her own Jet Ski. Just having the water splash you in the face and feeling the wind all around you is great. We all rode home in the back of Uncle’s and Daddy Mike’s trucks with the sun shining down on us and the wind drying our hair. Once we were back at Courtney’s we dined on fried fish and French fries — well, I ate French fries and everyone else ate the fish.

Abby even showed up to say hi to Kim and to apologize to Courtney. She winded up hugging all three of us, which made Courtney and I a little tense. Robert was driving her around, of course, and I hugged him too. I do miss him because we were really close at the end of freshman year. But we didn’t talk all summer so…I guess it’s a little awkward. He cut his hair really short, though. It seems like everyone’s getting a haircut except for me.

And as promised, I’m gonna post my birthday wishlist up here…

mini fridge ($79.00 from Wal*Mart)
Skinny Bitch in the Kitch vegetarian cookbook ($14.95 from Waldenbooks)
Nancy Drew: Ransom of the Seven Ships computer game ($19.82 from Wal*Mart)
double ear piercing ($15.00+ from Claire’s)
TOTAL: $128.77

I dunno why I’m thinking about this now — my birthday isn’t for another two months. But I really need to plan a party or something. It’s my sweet sixteen! I have to do something. There isn’t that much to do around here though.

Hmm… Any suggestions?

truly yours,

Some movies and books are nearly impossible to read. To the point where many people will hear that you read or watched them, look at you, and ask what the f@#$ is wrong with you. Now, for some products, this is because they’re so painful to digest – The Eye of Argon, for example, or Billy Jack Goes to Washington.

In other cases… it’s because the material is so objectionable that your brain instinctively rejects it. Jack Ketchum’s The Girl Next Door, for example, or 120 Days of Sodom. The 70’s saw numerous examples of both of these – the era gave birth to several abysmally bad films, as well as to some that are almost impossible to actually get through (Last House on the Left and I Spit on your Grave are good examples).

I’ll come clean here. I haven’t actually managed to watch LHotL or ISoyG. And, for the longest of times, the opinions of those like Siskel and Ebert kept me away from movies like Carpenter’s The Thing. But I’ve started to watch a bit more, and I’m surprised by what I see.

John Carpenter’s The Thing isn’t just a barf-bag thrill ride, but a chilling look at a world that was seeing a rash of epidemics, not the least of which was HIV/AIDS. Actually closer to the original novel by many accounts, The Thing presents a group of men who learn that the world is doomed if they don’t destroy the creature… and that the creature is one of them, but they can’t be sure which. An act of charity towards an animal ends up damning them all, because it’s entirely possible that they can’t even be sure of themselves. The only way to stop it is to ensure that nobody who *might* be infected survives – an excellent opening to Carpenter’s so-called Apocalypse Trilogy.

The Girl Next Door is a film I *still* haven’t managed to watch. But what looks to some like a sadistic ride through Hell is actually a searing condemnation of the sort of people who condone child abuse through their inactivity. And the worst part of it is that the movie actually tones down what actually happened in real life. By presenting the heart-wrenching story that he does, Ketchum deconstructs the myth of the 50’s, and exposes the hypocrisy of people who turn their heads away and simply say “it isn’t my problem.” For all that I can only make it about a half-hour into this film, one of these days I’m going to make it the rest of the way.

Deadgirl is an unusual case, in that I haven’t tried to watch it at all yet. However, from what I can gather out of the reviews I’ve heard, it’s almost identical to The Girl Next Door and The Thing in its reviews. People, normally smart people, simply can’t see past the veneer. The movie’s purpose is to shock, but not for the sake of the shock itself. Through its shocking imagery and horrors, Deadgirl presents a view into the world of high school politics, and the zero-sum game where we encourage people to advance socially through ripping apart the people who are “lower” than them. It’s through the degradation of the titular girl that our ‘heroes’ find a sense of power and control in their lives. I plan on picking this one up for a rental at least when it comes out in the US, to see if Cadaver Lab has it better than the folks over at Rotten Tomatoes… though given that the folks at Rotten Tomatoes seem to think that Jackson’s King Kong was a great film, I think I know where I should put my money.

Looking at another one that I haven’t seen yet, I Spit on your Grave is one of the world’s most reviled genre of films – a rape/revenge piece. This one has become so incredibly notorious for the simple fact that it has what is widely considered one of the most brutal rape scenes in film history, at least 20 minutes of brutality that utterly savages the victim before she manages to pull herself together, slowly recover, and go out to destroy the men who destroyed her. However, while even normally open-minded reviewers often shut down and can’t see any real purpose to the film, I’ve found out that the movie itself was actually a reaction to the director’s discovery of a rape victim, and her treatment by the police. That adds an entirely new dimension to the film, one that needs to be considered while you watch it.

Moving away from films, we hit what I consider the creme de la creme of ‘impossible to watch’ pieces – or, more accurately, impossible to read ones. 120 Days of Sodom, by the Marquis de Sade, proves that nothing, not even torture porn, is a new craze. I’ve actually read this one through, cover to cover, over the course of several weeks; like most of the ‘unwatchable’ pieces here, it’s rather difficult to explain having this book on your shelves. Reading this book, you will (hopefully!) be utterly horrified, if not disgusted to the point of putting it down; De Sade’s philosophy is horrific, a case of ’social Darwinism’ taken to its illogical extreme. But still, the book does have its redeeming features, if nothing else than to serve as a litmus test. If you can read this book without feeling ill by the end of it, you need therapy.

So, why the hell do I watch these films, and read these books? Why would anybody? Well, the easy answer would be “I’m a sick bastard.” But that’s not really true – I don’t enjoy these materials in the traditional sense. I get a reaction out of movies that aren’t this twisted too, so it’s not desensitization (the next most popular theory with people who want to get rid of these films). Instead, it’s because I *do* get a reaction out of these pieces, a very powerful one. I feel emotional resonance with romances and adventure films too. I love King Kong (the 1933 version, thanks.)

But the unwatchable holds a certain appeal; they affect me on a level most films simply can’t. They go for the jugular, and start punching you in the gut while they’re hanging on tenaciously. In its simplest form, they take their message, and they ram it down your throat without any apology or softening of the blow. Unfortunately, a lot of the time that turns people off from listening to that message… but, over time, it becomes more and more obvious. The Thing communicates the horror of the HIV/AIDS scare (I have to wonder – is it a coincidence that this movie is cast entirely with men?) While that wasn’t seen 20 years ago, it’s gradually becoming acknowledged now that people are taking a fresh look at the film. Eventually, people will look at the Girl Next Door, and see it not as a sadistic celebration of abuse, but as the condemnation of it (and the ‘look the other way’ mentality) that it is. Eventually, people won’t view Deadgirl as an ‘S&M porno,’ but as a look at what creates the sort of sick creatures that populate its world.

I guess I’m just an early adopter.

The movie starts in contemporary New York City when 50ish stock trader David Moran (William Atherton) sees a homeless man hit by a car. He acts immediately to save the man’s life by giving him mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Later, at home, Moran sits studying a drawing obviously made by a child. The incident that day has reminded him of a time in the summer of 1958 when he failed to act to save a life. The rest of the film proceeds as a flashback.

Teenage David Moran(Daniel Manche) is down catching crawfish at the local stream when he runs into the new girl in town, 16 year-old Megan Loughin (Blythe Auffarth). Megan and her little sister, ten year-old Susan (Madeline Taylor), have just moved in with David’s next door neighbor, divorcee Ruth Chandler (Blanche Baker) and her three sons. Meg and Susan (who has been crippled by polio) have recently been orphaned.

The Chandler household is a big teenage hangout in the neighborhood. Mrs. Chandler (who the kids call “Ruth”) is considered a cool parent as she secretly lets the kids drink beer and plies the boys with salacious talk.

When David runs into Megan a couple days later she tells him that nothing she does seems to please Ruth. David has an idea to make peace between them: he suggests that Megan draw a picture for Ruth. Meg does not want to do this as she is afraid that Ruth with ridicule her. David suggests instead that Megan draw one for him. She does this (it is the picture the adult David is contemplating at the beginning of the film) and David presents it to Ruth telling her that Megan drew it for her. Ruth sees through this and rejects the drawing telling David to keep it.

When David arrives at the Chandler house a couple days later he finds the Chandler boys trying to grope Megan. She hits one of them hard and runs from the room. Ruth arrives and takes the boys side of the argument. She would like to punish Megan, but as she is gone, Ruth instead decides instead to punish Susan for “conniving” with her sister and gives Susan an old fashioned, bare-bottom spanking with a rug beater. To increase the girl’s humiliation she insists the boys watch.

The next day Meg reports this to police officer Jennings (Kevin Chamberlin) who speaks to Ruth. Ruth is able to deflect his inquires, however, and confronts Megan telling her she will find a way to keep her from running to police with her complaints.

The next day when David arrives for a sleepover, he finds the whole household in the basement. Megan has been blindfolded and tied from the rafters by her wrists. She is standing on a pile of books and each time she refuses to confess to something Ruth has accused her of a book is pulled out increasing the strain on her arms. When the books are gone Ruth allows her oldest son, Willie (Graham Patrick Martin) to use his knife to strip the girl naked. When Meg still fails to cooperate, Ruth decides to leave her in this position all night. Before exiting, however, Ruth makes the chilling observation that if Megan is still difficult she may switch the girls’ roles and let Megan watch while her ten-year-old sister takes her place stripped and hanging from the rafters.

That night David can’t sleep thinking of Megan in the basement. He talks the other boys into sneaking downstairs to ease her bonds and give her something to drink. The other boys cooperate, though it is clear they fear Ruth finding out.

Over the next few days David tries to help Megan out by slipping her a knife to cut her bonds and leaving the basement door unlocked so she can escape. She gets out, but is caught when she tries to sneak Susan out of the house too.

David tries telling his parents what is happening, but fears Ruth too much.

Megan’s torment reaches a peak one afternoon when the whole household, David and several other teenagers (including girls) are in the basement. Meg is tied naked on a unpadded metal box spring while Willie is allowed to rape her and the rest watch. When he is done the neighborhood punk, Eddie (Michael Zegan) suggests that they “cut” her. Ruth likes this idea and uses a sharpened, hot, bobby pin to carve a sexually explicit message into Meg’s abdomen. Ruth observes this will keep any man from wanting her and suggests that to keep Meg from wanting a man they use female circumcision on her.

This suggestion to too much for David and he tries to bolt the room to get help, but is knocked to the ground. Ruth then proceeds to circumcise Meg using a propane torch.

When David awakes he finds his hands are tied and he is locked in the basement with Susan and Megan. Fearing Ruth will kill them all; he gets his hands free and comes up with a plan for escape: he fills a metal pot with rags and sets it ablaze. The smoke rolls up the stairs and out under the edges of the house. When Ruth races through the basement door to find out what is going on, David hits her over the head with Susan’s crutch, apparently killing her. Willie knocks David to the ground and is about to knife him when Officer Jennings and the police, who have seen the smoke from the street, intervene.

While Megan lays waiting for EMS, David lies next to her and asks her forgiveness for not acting sooner. She forgives him and tells him she was glad that he acted in the end. Megan then dies.

Back in contemporary times we see the adult David kneeling by the stream where he first met Megan. He tells the audience he will never forget her. In the reflection of the water we see a teenage Megan briefly appear kneeling beside him. She disappears and the picture ends.
