I had a great time traveling to Florida for FETC 2012. Coming from New England, I really appreciated the 80 degree sunshine in the middle of January!

I had the chance to attend a few sessions, my favorite being “Rock Your Student’s Education with Technology” presented by Caryn Good. Caryn’s presentation went over everything from Glogster EDU to Blabberize to Vokis. There wasn’t an open seat in room S230E. I think that there were more people standing or sitting on the floor than in the Technology Shootout that kicked off the conference!

I also attended Lauren Tate’s session, “Increasing Engagement with Web 2.0 tools.” Lauren is a young educator who really knows how to bring life into a classroom. She captures her students’ attention by using every Web 2.0 tool imaginable.

I also want to take this opportunity to congratulate all of our Premium License giveaway winners:

Alex Sadowsky, 5th grade teacher from Flora Ridge Osceola

Kathleen McAllister, Duval County Schools

Arlene Sutherland, librarian from Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy

Barb Bodley, technology teacher from Armleder Education Center

All in all, the FETC conference was a great success! However, I must admit the best part about the entire trip was when I ran into the Vice President for Wilson Sporting Goods in the airport on the way back to Boston. He will be sending me a game ball from this weekend’s Super Bowl. Go Pats! Go Glogster! Go FETC!!

We received a special package in the mail today – a Google Chromebook! It’s small and light, boots up quickly, and couldn’t be simpler to use. A great netbook for easy student access to Web 2.0 sites like Glogster EDU. I’ve been hogging it in the office all morning (sorry, guys!) for basic web browsing, Google Docs, Glogging, and blogging (on it now, in fact), and the battery is still going strong. If you or your students spend most of your time on your laptop online, then a simple Chromebook might be the way to go.

Glogging on the Chromebook

Mike will be demonstrating Glogster EDU on the Chromebook at FETC next week. Stop by the Google booth (#1101) on Thursday, January 26 between 1:45 and 2:00 PM to see this baby in action.

I can’t wait to meet educators and fellow technology professionals who are shaping the future of education. (And maybe try to soak up some sun while I’m at it!)

There are a ton of interesting sessions on the schedule, but I’ve picked out three in particular that I’ll definitely be attending. At the end of these presentations, you’ll have the opportunity to enter a raffle to win a FREE Teacher Premium License. So come on by!

1. K-5 Research Projects Go Digital (CS5426) - Wednesday, January 25 at 4:30 pm – 5:30 pm

Deborah Icard and Jane Brady Hudson will show how to bring elementary research projects into the digital world with Web 2.0 tools such as Prezi, Animoto, Glogster, Voicethread, Xtranormal, Blabberize, blogs, & podcasts.

2. Increasing Engagement with Web 2.0 Tools (CS8233) – Thursday, January 26 at 1:30 pm – 2:30 pm

Lauren Tate will guide you through an introduction of a few key Web 2.0 tools: Prezi, Glogster, Voicethread, and Storybird. There will be time for group collaboration, assistance, and discussion. Bring your laptops!

3. Rock Your Student’s Education with Technology! (CS9743) - Thursday, January 26 at 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Caryn Good’s session will be jam-packed with great ideas for utilizing free technologies in all subject areas. Learn about Glogster EDU, VuVox, Blabberize, Popplet, Symbaloo, Voki and more.

Make sure to stop by the Google booth (#1101) on Thursday, January 26 between 1:45 and 2:00 PM to watch me demo Glogster EDU on a Google Chromebook.

Will you be at FETC? Email me at mike.sielawa@glogster.com, and we’ll find a time to meet!

With the requirements that come along with standardized testing, curriculum benchmarks, and all the strains on your teaching schedule, it may be hard to find an opportunity to focus on the less tangible aspects of education: character development, leadership skills, responsible decision-making. That’s where the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America come in. The mission of the FCCLA is to “promote personal growth and leadership development through Family and Consumer Sciences Education.”

Glogster EDU is teaming up with the FCCLA to sponsor the Virtual Poster STAR Event. Participants create a Glog related to one of the following categories: Eat Right, Be Fit, and Make Healthy Choices. Along with informative text, images, graphics, and data, the Glog must include an embedded video of the participant presenting their Glog to an audience. View requirements and rubrics here.

Any nationally affiliated FCCLA chapter member may submit an entry. To be eligible, you must register for the STAR event and post your complete projects (Glog, project identification page, FCCLA planning process summary page, and bibliography) on the school/FCCLA chapter website or wiki. View the project requirements for a detailed description of each component.

The deadline for first-round submissions is February 1, 2012. 20 finalists will be invited to present their Glog and give an oral presentation at the 2012 National Leadership Conference in Orlando, Florida during the summer.

If you have any questions, contact FCCLA’s STAR Events staff at starevents@fcclainc.org.

The FCCLA STAR Event is a great opportunity to teach your students valuable research, organization, and presentation skills in highly relevant content areas. If you’re just getting started with Glogster EDU, this is the perfect time to jump right in!

Are you planning to enter? Have a good idea on how to incorporate the STAR Event into your existing curriculum? Let us know in the comments!

I had a blast at the MidSouth Technology Conference last week. I’ve been to a few different places in the United States, but I’ve never met people as nice as those I met in Memphis.

Good ole' Memphis sunset.

The first day I had the opportunity to listen to Kathy Schrock’s presentation entitled “A Picture is Worth 1000 Words.” I was definitely able to relate to her topic because visual representation is a key ingredient to what we do here at Glogster EDU. I also had the chance to sit in on Isabella Scaramucci’s presentation about Glogster EDU entitled “Creating the Private Virtual Classroom” as well as “Using Web 2.0 Tools to Enhance Student Creativity in the Reading/Language Arts Block” presented by Dr. Megan Salemi and Lori Carter. Both presentations had a good showing, and I think that attendees were able to take away a lot of useful teaching techniques to apply to their own classrooms.

Isabella Scaramucci’s presentation, “Creating the Private Virtual Classroom”

My session entitled “Glogster EDU: Transform your Classroom into a Virtual Learning Environment” was a great success! I had approximately 60 people in attendance, and I had a great time having fun with the crowd. We went over the ins–and-outs of Glogster EDU while having some much needed fun on a Friday morning.

All in all, the MSTC was a great success for all parties involved. And if you ever get a chance to visit Memphis, I recommend checking out a restaurant called Cozy Corner. No one does BBQ like Memphis!

Started in 1994 in memory of Christa McAuliffe, the CMTC is a great educational conference with a focus on utilizing the technological resources we have today.

It’s no wonder Glogster EDU will be strongly represented there!

Last week was a fantastic week for Glogster EDU!

To start, we had a strong presence at the New Jersey Education Association Convention (NJEA), which was attended by tens of thousands of educators in New Jersey on November 10 and 11, 2011.

Glogster EDU was presented at 4 sessions during the convention. Sessions ranged from introductions to the creative world of Glogging to presentations on how to embed Glogs in Wikispaces. Special thanks to the presenters, Bruce Duboff, Erica Hartman, Erica Parke, and Jessica Hoertel.

We ended the week on a positive note as well by finishing strong in the top 10 of the C4LPT Top 10 Tools for Learning 2011 list.

Each year, the Centre for Learning & Performance Technologies encourages educators to vote for their top educational tools of the year. Thanks to your votes, Glogster EDU came in at #10 on the list, moving up 15 spots from last year!

For those of you who voted, attended or presented, thank you so much! We appreciate your support and we hope you continue to enjoy the benefits of Glogster EDU in your classroom.

I receive amazing comments and emails from people all the time about Glogster EDU and how it’s brought excitement into their teaching by motivating and engaging their kids. It makes my day, each and every day.

I heard Patrik, one of the Glogster founders, say on my very first day here, “Glogster is yours.” I thought, “So what is that? A catchphrase, a gimmick? What does that mean?”

Now I know what it means. It means that the platform has been built from YOUR input and feedback. It means that this is a company that listens to its users and is as committed to you as it’s ever been.

I’ve been with Glogster a year now, and in that short amount of time a lot has happened. Glogster EDU has expanded its product offerings to meet the various needs of our Gloggers and has experienced some growing pains in the process. I’ve heard the grumblings and concerns, but through it all, I have seen the commitment to Glogster EDU remain high.

Why is that? Well, I know that Glogster EDU is one the best education technology platforms for teachers to use with their students, and I guess that you see it too. There is truly nothing else quite like Glogster EDU.

This past year, I’ve seen the growth of a company, been involved in some great programs and events, traveled the country, and met so many wonderful teachers and educators. I’ve made some great friends. I’ve seen some really incredible Glogs. And I’ve listened to and shared some wonderful stories.

It’s those stories that help define us and contribute to who and what we are. And it’s those stories that will help shape our future as a company, and more importantly, our Glogster EDU community.

I was so thrilled to be asked to write this first blog entry. This new blog is here to help enrich our growing Glogster EDU community — to give you and other guest bloggers an opportunity to share your inspiring stories.

After all –

Glogster is Yours.
