Hoy es el turno del mms84 Ave Sapien co-protagonista de Rojo en “The Golden Army“, una cinta maravillosa en sus dos entregas, esta figura aunque parece sencila es algo que lo ves y no quieres quitarle el ojo de encima, fijarse muy bien en el detalle de terminacion y esculpido de cabeza, la pintura es fascinante como asi toda la terminación de la figura en si, sin más bla bla bla echenle una miradita y me cuentan…

Empaque

Desde hace tiempo, Hot Toys, con su ideal de perfeccionamiento ha ido cuidando todas las partes de su figura, esto incluye también a su empaque. La caja es de cartón, con doble cerramiento, por un lado una caja hueca que cubre y protege a la caja principal.

…y por el otro lado la normal con apertura para poder ver la figura. Ambas cajas se encuentran llenas de detalles del contenido de la figura, adornada con distintos símbolos que la envuelven en sus extremos. Como no podía ser de otra forma, todo lo adorna de un color rojido característico del personaje.

La figura se encuentra enganchada a otra cajita de plástico, cubierta de dos láminas transparentes.

La Figura

Hellboy está en escala 1:6 (algo así como 12 pulgadas de alto), dimensiones que ya son característica de la empresa asiática. La figura viene vestida con la cazadora/gabardina amarilla de tela gruesa, la cual cuenta con distintos símbolos adheridos, pantalones de cuero y su cinturón.

El cinturón que le rodea la cintura viene provisto de infinidad de pequeños detalles, la evilla, el rosario, la cartuchera, los bolsitos y todo de cuero  (increíble!)

El modelado es impresionante, quitando quizás la unión de la mano izquierda con el brazo no se nota ninguna articulación. El cuerpo está recubierto por una especie de goma que las esconde. Ésto tiene un pequeño handicap, ya que perdemos un poco de movilidad en la figura. La mano roca derecha es intercambiable, puedes tenerla con el puño cerrado o con la mano abierta. En ésta última podemos mover los dedos y dejarlos en la posición que queramos, dentro de un límite claro. Aquí se nota una vez mas el mimo con que la empresa hace sus réplicas, clavando el relieve que recubre el brazo-mano derecha. 
Si quitamos la chaqueta, podemos observar las marcas que luce el protagonista, una vez más dando un resultado muy impresionante.

La cara reproduce fielmente los rasgos de Ron Perlman, y aunque en las fotos no se aprecie, los ojos están increiblemente bien pintados.

Los Extras (Accesorios)

Como ya vimos, en el cinturón podemos guardar la pistola en la cartuchera. La pistola se abre descubriéndonos el tambor con la balas. En el culo del mango tenemos un trocito de cuero. El detalle de nuevo es espectacular.

La otra es la conocida Big Baby. También se abre, pudiendo meter los cartuchos en el tambor. Los cartuchos vienen con serigrafía

Valoración personal

Una figura increible, con mil detalles por descubrir, que puedes mover y cambiar de postura a tu elección, se puede pedir más…
En contra tenemos que la unión de la mano izquierda no está tan bien camuflada y el “handicap” del cuerpo de caucho que nos limita a la hora de articularla.

This was a great movie to watch and for so many reasons. The scenery and character design is incredible. Guillermo del Toro really makes some amazing looking creatures come to life and the story is quite the roller coaster ride. It’s entertaining and humorous and I love the smartass attitude of Hellboy.

The basic premise of the story is pretty simple but this movie isn’t for thinking really. Everyone has their moment of hilarity and I really enjoyed the scene of Abe Sapien and Hellboy getting drunk and listening to Barry Manilow. Pure awesome!

You couldn’t really ask much more from this one. Great effects and action, some good comedy and memorable characters. If you haven’t seen this one than what are you waiting for.

Premise: Hellboy is back for a second installment. Heir to an ancient Elven kingdom, Prince Nuada returns from years of exile to claim the throne and break the ancient treaties spelling out peace between their kind and the human race after the use of the “Golden Army”, a battalion of mechanical monsters that could wipe out all of humanity. Wishing to awaken the fabled Golden Army with the 3 pieces of the master crown, Prince Nuada must pursue his twin sister Princess Nuala who has stolen the 3rd and crucial crown piece.

In despair, Princess Nuala must rely on the help of our unlikely heros of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, including Hellboy, who continues to chafe against the restraints placed upon him to hide him from an society that could never understand him. Placed on a collision course with Prince Nuada to disable the Golden Army and assure peace to the world, Hellboy must come to terms with both his troubled relationship with his pyrokinetic girlfriend Liz and <spoiler = his new role of fatherhood>.

Analysis: I will be honest… I didn’t really care for the first Hellboy. My wife seems to be a big fan, so I gave the second one a go and came to the same results… its full of flashing action, but is light on meaningful plot of any kind, (not obviously a part of this type of movie genre by definition, but it tends to be the norm).

The whole relationship thing between the characters seemed so contrived… especially between the Liz and Hellboy characters… alot more could have been done with this imho.

Some of the effects were pretty cool, (the toothfaries scene was both creepy and well-done), and the fight scenes with Prince Nuada were very impressive. The movie below is the ONLY movie I could find on Youtube that portrayed the fight scenes… sorry for the kinda sappy music.

So yah, overall an OK movie… kinda like the first one. I think this one had some much more notable action, but overall I just really couldn’t get into it.

My Netflix Rating: 3 stars out of 5

The Plot: The identities of Hellboy (Ron Perlman), Liz Sherman (Selma Blair) and Abe Sapien (Doug Jones) are exposed to the general public as they face a new threat: The Golden Army, assembled of long-hidden mythological creatures, is prepared to attack. As fantastic monsters and paranormal phenomena begin to take over, the trio races to stop the army’s leader, the vengeful Prince Nuada (Luke Goss). John Alexander co-stars in Guillermo del Toro’s visually entertaining sequel.

The music was well done for this type of movie. It included most of the same theme music from the first movie, with some added tracks as well. Most of the music commanded the mood as the movie progressed. The one thing I hated, was when they were trying to be funny, and played Barry Manalow’s “I Cant Smile without You”. This gag just wasn’t funny to me…

The cinematography was decent. All the main scenes were done well. It had a lot of steady panning shots with little to no shakiness. The lighting was great as well and the colors use made everything look really surreal. These things definitely made the film more enjoyable over all.

The acting was defiantly on the mediocre side. I hate to be harsh but Selma Blair, although nice to look at, is kind of a bland actress. I’m gonna have to blame her for the complete lack of chemistry between her and Perlman. Other characters were similar…that could be blamed on the fact that they were CGI’ed, but overall the lack of emotion took away from any type of natural reaction.

The effects were really the best part of this movie. There were all types of different creatures with amazing designs. This is something I have come to expect from Guillermo Del Toro. The fight scenes were defiantly entertaining…and abundant throughout the film.

Overall the movie was very visually entertaining. If you’re the type of movie fan that just likes to sit down and watch all hell break loose on the screen then this you will enjoy. As for me, due to character flaws, choppy storyline that failed to keep a good flow going, and lack of drama, I cant say that I loved it.

Y’see, and followers of my previous blog will know this, I sorta love Hillary Clinton. So I was, in my own nerd way, incredibly happy to see that she – or rather a story about her – topped guardian.co.uk’s  most clicked stories of 2008. And, not to gloat or owt, Obama’s victory was only 7! Mwah ha ha ha!

I know the reasons why the Obama victory was 7 and the breaking news about Clinton was 1..I just choose to ignore it.

Hellboy 2: The Golden Army

The feverish Hellboy 2: The Golden Army is a very busy sequel that might have looked unhinged in the hands of a less visionary director than Guillermo del Toro. Ron Perlman returns as Hellboy, aka “Red,” the Dark Horse Comics demon-hero with roots in the mythical world but personal ties in the human realm. Still working, as he was in Hellboy, for a secret department of the federal government that deals (as in “Men In Black”) with forces of the fantastic, Red and his colleagues take on a royal elf (Luke Goss) determined to smash a longtime truce between mankind and the forces of magic. Meanwhile, Red’s relationship with girlfriend Liz (Selma Blair), who can burst into flames at will, is going through a rocky stage observed by Red’s fishy friend Abe (Doug Jones), himself struck by love in this film. Del Toro brilliantly integrates the ordinary and extraordinary, diving into an extended scene set in a troll market barely hidden behind the façade of typical city streets. He also unleashes a forest monster that devastates an urban neighborhood, but then–interestingly–brings a luminous beauty to the same area as the creature (an “elemental”) succumbs to a terrible death. Del Toro’s art direction proves masterful, too, in a climactic battle set in a clockworks-like stronghold tucked away in rugged Irish landscape. But it’s really the juxtaposition of visual marvels with not-so-unusual relationship issues that gives Hellboy 2 a certain jaunty appeal hard to find in other superhero movies. –Tom Keogh

Synopsis
Hellboy 2: The Golden Army begs any number of referential mash-ups to be used as description of its outlandish tonal and stylistic qualities. It’s a little like a romantic and sophisticated live-action Ninja Turtles movie imbued with a cracked version of H.P. Lovecraft’s monster storytelling. It’s a feature-length version of STAR WARS’s Mos Eisley Cantina mixed with a scrappy, proficient passion for creature design reminiscent of Ray Harryhausen. It’s also kind of director/co-writer Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy (2004) wrapped in a blanket of his Pan’s Labyrinth. This sequel is all these things, but none of them can accurately capture the singularity of a movie which, in some ways, stands alone in its ability to capture the crass and literary luridness of reading a comic book. It’s filled with gross creatures bursting with humanity, dark poetry, and slapstick comedy; in one scene, an argument between Hellboy and Johann Krauss, a formless gas contained in a mobilized suit, escalates to the point of Tom-and-Jerry-like violence.

As Hellboy himself, a heartfelt anti-hero who regularly eliminates supernatural threat as an agent for the U.S. Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense alongside girlfriend Liz (Selma Blair) and comrade Abe Sapien, Ron Perlman again embodies the role with the kind of pathos and humour that one can only expect from a horned, red-skinned Hell-spawn who loves kittens and acts like a hardboiled detective who happens to watch TV and drink a lot of canned beer. Hellboy 2’s rather interesting antagonist, Prince Nuada, isn’t just an evil dude. In the mold of the complex villains typically found in Hayao Miyazaki’s animated fairy tales, his intentions of restoring control over Earth to an Elvish race by regaining the key to unlock the indestructible Golden Army are at least based on a legitimately noble sentiment before megalomania kicks in.

Director Gullermo Del Toro has been continuously impressing me. The first Hellboy is a hugely entertaining thrill, slightly weakened by a melodramatic ressurrection in the third act that by no means truly hurts the film. “Pan’s Labyrinth” is a melancholic fairy tale that never holds back on violence or cruelty, cleverly using a young girl’s colorful world to illustrate the horrors of Spain’s civil war. Both movies are exceptionally well-directed and especially amazing at the art direction and makeover departments. “Hellboy 2″ not only keeps up that standard, it’s a still flawed but great improvement over the first film.

Written by Del Toro based on a story by him and Mike Mignola (the creator of Hellboy), the script narrates Hellboy’s efforts to frustrate the plans of Prince Nuada, a renegade from the Elf (or Mythical) kingdom who wants to ressurrect an incredibly powerful Golden Army, which his father locked away ages ago, regretting its very creation. Nuada plans to use it to dominate the human species, since the Elves’ (and most mythical species’) reclusion within a hidden kingdom ashames him. His sister – who, they finds out, has a connection to Nuada (he is hurt, she is also hurt in the same way, at the same time) disapproves of her brother’s plans, and escapes after he murders his own father to get one of the pieces composing an artifact that brings the Golden Army back to life – a golden crown.

Not a terribly original plot (Finding The Pieces That Form A Powerful Artifact), but that doesn’t matter in the slightest. Del Toro is more interested in the characters than in the plot itself, and within the characters lies the film’s heart and most of its laughs. And while it’s cliched, the plot is well-developed enough, plagued only by regular missteps, like a certain character developing extraordinary sword-fighting skills out of sheer badassness in the third act. What truly makes “Hellboy 2″ a great film are the main character and his friends.

Hellboy, played by Ron Perlman with absolute perfection and under superb makeover, is compelling and likable in his simplicity and his overwhelming wish to be understood and accepted. Laid back and inconsequential, he’s incapable of figuring out why the sensitive Liz (well-played by the beautiful Selma Blair) has such a difficult relationship with him. I have to pause here to say the thought of sex between these two just reminded me of a Bill Hicks joke in his Revelations stand-up (“Hold on to my horns”). Anyway, we also have Abe Sapien, the flexible amphibious sidekick who, unlike most sidekicks, is actually sharply clever (but sucks at fighting). He’s played by the phenomenal Doug Jones, who also interpreted Pan in Pan’s Labyrinth and, in this movie, also plays the Angel of Death. Like Hellboy, Abe is also troubled by his appearance, but is a much softer, easier being. And finally, there’s an excellent new addition to the main cast: Johann Krauss, a bunch of German ectoplasmic smoke held together by a brown suit. Seth McFarlane’s voiceovers are impeccable, as is his comical German accent.

While the script has tremendous fun developing the interesting characters through mostly priceless moments of humor (the fate of Prince Nuada’s bodyguard is particularly awesome), director Del Toro delights the audience with the visuals. Thanks to exceptional makeover and minimal use of CGI, Hellboy’s world is immensely imaginative and immersive. The Troll Market sequence is especially delightful. But thankfully, Del Toro is also a talented storyteller and instead of giving the visuals the spotlight, he uses them to tell the story more effectively. The action scenes fortunately avoid the current cinematic Tony Scott-esque trend of shaky cameras and use clear edition and steady angles.

Funny and rewarding, “Hellboy 2: The Golden Army” is an enormously entertaining film that, as a bonus, sets the pieces for a third one about Hellboy’s origins and his fate as the Destroyer of Worlds. It’s got one or other bit that feels forced, but they’re almost completely overshadowed by the charm, wit and comedy.

Hellboy II: The Golden Army(2008); Dir. Guillermo Del Toro

Hellboy II represents a watershed in the filmmaking career of director Guillermo Del Toro. For years he has moved between the more personal, mystical fairy tales of children attempting to navigate the adult world in times of great crisis or loss such as in Cronos or Devil’s Backbone and the pure action/adventure of Blade II or even the often forgotten Mimic. While Pan’s Labyrinth indicated a new direction for Guillermo Del Toro in both the scope of visual storytelling and exploring in fantastical detail worlds that coexist alongside the human world, it is with Hellboy II that his vision becomes fully realized and these two aspects of his films are brought together to create a story that is magical in a way that most films are not able to achieve.

 This world of elves, trolls, tree monsters, and other mythical creatures is one that has existed countless times in books and film and  Guillermo Del Toro uses some well tried conventions of fantasy stories such as the epic battle and retelling of the legend of King Balor, Prince Nuada, and the Golden Army that begins the film.  What is exciting about Guillermo Del Toro’s filmmaking though is that he takes these conventions of the genre and creates something that we are both in awe of and  strangely familiar with. There is a sincerity of purpose in the telling of the story as well as a wonderful understanding of how a fantasy film is supposed to look and feel for the audience. The characters are not lofty or exaggerated, even by comic book standards, but flawed in very human terms. We can appreciate them for this and it adds a dimension to the story that is rarely seen in action films.

Guillermo Del Toro is certainly not a melodramatic director but he is very sentimental both for his characters and in his style of filmmaking. He gives his characters moments where they are able to reveal themselves without seeming out of place and while Hellboy II is an action picture, it is one with a great deal of mythology and influences layered beneath the fight sequences, love stories, and comic relief that populates the film’s swiftly moving plot. One of the most difficult challenges in a sequel is to continue developing familiar characters while still making a film that stands on its own. Guillermo Del Toro does not rely on bringing back old characters to add excitement to the movie but there is that “picked up where we left off feeling” which serves the movie well. In fact, he also brings in new characters such as Johann Kraus voiced by Seth MacFarlane, who lives in a mechanical suit apparatus constructed by Hellboy’s adoptive father as well as Prince Nuada’s twin sister Princess Nuala who brings a very interesting aspect to the story.

Hellboy II represents a new direction for what action films can accomplish as much as The Dark Knight pushed the boundaries of how the comic book hero was potrayed on film. Masterpieces? Certainly not. Great Genre filmmaking? There is no doubt. What is most clear with Hellboy II is that Guillermo Del Toro is gradually building a body of work that embodies the fantasy genres’ best aspects and modern fairy tales which entertain as well as find their way to the heart of something more substantial and meaningful then just flashy action sequences, quick moving plots, and snappy dialogue.

Si si, pensé en decir el “de moño”, pero me autoflagelé por haber pensado en uno de los chistes más viejos y pedorros que hay. Además, aclaramos que no hay ninguna connotación a Sanguinetti o Hierro López, esto es un comentarios sobre HELLBOY 2, EL EJERCITO DORADO.

Mike Mignola es un californiano nacido en el ‘60, escritor y dibujante de comics y que también ha trabajado en proyecto de animación.
Guillermo del Toro nació en Jalisco (México) en el ‘64 y es uno de los directores que más me gusta (de los latinos es el que más me gusta y acompaño, junto a su compatriota Robert Rodriguez). Eso si (y quizás sea por eso mismo que me gusta), es un enfermito que hace siempre películas nada convencionales, bastante “raróficas”: Cronos (1993), Mimic (1997), El espinazo del diablo (2001), Blade II (2002), Hellboy (2004), El laberinto del fauno (2006), Hellboy 2 (2008) y se vendrá con El Hobbit (2011/2012).

HELLBOY fue creado por Mignola en 1994 para el sello Legends de la editorial de cómic estadounidense Dark Horse. Un comic muy influenciados por HP Lovecraft, Jack Kirby, Edgar Allan Poe, y otros autores. Historias de terror de la variedad Weird Tales (una revista norteamericana de ciencia-ficción, fantasía y terror, encuadrable dentro de las llamadas revistas pulp -las viejas novelas de bolsillo en papel pulpa, el áspero de baja calidad que canjeábamos en la feria-) son otra influencia importante. El escritor Robert Bloch (alumno y amigo de Lovecraft, escritor de las “pulp” Weird Tales; autor de Psicosis y algunos capítulos de la serie Star Treck) alabó Hellboy como uno de los más “innovadores y entretenidos comics de los últimos años’. Las historias de Hellboy se han basado en el folclore de países como Rusia, Irlanda, Noruega, Japón y Malasia.

Toda esta introducción vale, porque el BatiMariolo no existía cuando la primer peli (si bien ya andábamos en el mundo del cine); y además porque siempre hay quien no es nada “comiquero” y no sabe de esto (yo mismo soy amantes de los comics y soy bastante inculto al respecto). Se puede informar mucho sobe Hellboy (lo mejor es leer sus comics), pero lo más sencillito (cortito y al pie) es en Wikipedia.
Vayamos a la peli que hoy está en cartel.

Cuando se rompe la antigua tregua entre los seres humanos y los primeros hijos de la Tierra, el infierno se apodera del mundo. El anárquico príncipe del mundo subterráneo, Nuada (un líder elfo despiadado, que se maneja tanto en el mundo de los humanos como en el de las criaturas míticas), se ha cansado de inclinarse ante los seres humanos. Se le ocurre despertar a un ejército de máquinas de matar que volverá a apoderarse de lo que fue suyo. Por fin, las criaturas mágicas podrán pasearse por la Tierra a su antojo. Sólo Hellboy puede detener al oscuro líder y salvar al mundo de la aniquilación. Junto a su equipo habitual de la Agencia de Investigación y Defensa Paranormal, la piroquinética Liz Sherman, el anfibio Abe Sapien, y contando esta vez con el protoplásmico y místico Johann Kraus; Hellboy viajará entre los dos mundos, haciendo frente a seres fantásticos. Hellboy, que pertenece a los dos mundos, deberá elegir entre la vida que conoce y un desconocido destino que lo reclama.
Ya sabemos que elige, ya sabemos que el “bien” siempre gana.
Pero …. y ahi fue donde se me trancó el cerebro (si si, ya se, hace rato está trancado, no me jodan) ….
En la peli nos plantean que el malo es el príncipe, que quiere aniquilar a los humanos, y los buenos somos los humanos que lo cagamos a tiros y bombas para aniquilarlo a el y su especie.
El Elfo dice claramente, a su padre y hermana (que no quieren guerra, que los humanos no cumplieron su parte, no respetaron el acuerdo, que al mundo lo han hecho una mierda; que no pueden seguir sumisos allá abajo y dejar que esto siga así, por eso sale a luchar.
Y se lo dice al mismo Hellboy, que también es un príncipe (por si no sabían, el se llama Anung Un Rama); “te vas a quedar a defenderlos a ellos (los humanos), que luego te patearan y te matarán a vos mismo”.

Y es así, los humanos idolatramos a alguién mientras nos “sirve”, después le damos una patada en el culo y chau.
Entonces, ¿tan errado está el príncipe elfo en su pretensión de justicia?. Con aditamientos de violencia extrema, claro está, perooooo ….. en fin.

Ron Perlman vuelve a ser Hellboy (un gran actor que, por ser “feito” no ha tenido todas las oportunidades que debería), Selma Blair está que se quema como Liz Sherman, Doug Jones también vuelve a hacerse agua como Abe Sapien/Chambelán/Ángel de la Muerte, Luke Goss en el príncipe Nuada, Jeffrey Tambor es Tom Manning, John Hurt es Trevor “Broom” Buttenholm, Anna Walton es la bella princesa Nuala.
Guión, por supuesto, de Guillermo del Toro; basado en un argumento de el mismo y Mike Mignola.

No hago comparaciones, si bien el personaje es el mismo, para mi fue diferente a la primera y ahi está otro gran valor agregado que le puso Del Toro, y la volvió hacer entretenida.

HellBoy II - The Golden Army

Here’s one more superhero movie, which brought out to the theatre from a comic book. Hellboy. A demon whose fighting for human existence. With his friends, Abraham (Abe), Babe – the flaming girl, and B.P.R.D – Bureau for Paranormal Research Defense. And in this movie, there’s a new character who joined into their team, Professor Krauss (I guess so. Please check the spelling – I just get it from the movie).

I’m interested in this movie, because I never saw the first one. Not in theatre, nor in DVDs. I just can’t find the DVD. Maybe there’s none right? But, it’s not prevent me to see it’s sequel, Hellboy II.

Started in some military camp, I figured a child character whose similar with adult Hellboy. Why did I say that? Because, the child character has it’s horn, his right hand is bigger than the other, and, he’s red. Just like Hellboy. Nevertheless, this child was going to bed and get some stories from his parent (I guess) about the ancient kingdom of magical beings, and their war against human. The kingdom is ruled by a king, whose having two child which were twins. The war itself, won by the magical being, because they’re using a special army, called The Golden Army. Legend said, The Golden Army, are non-destructive. So, they can’t be broken in anyway. And so, The Golden Army can’t be defeated. But they’re also rude, brutal, and cause many human victims. Because of that, the king of magical being, regret the result of the war. In the end, he made an agreement with the human, to end the war. Then, the human can live in the cities, and the magical being in the forest. But one of his child disagreed with that decision, and left with an anger.

And, the movie continued to the present time. About Hellboy and his team who’s living in B.P.R.D headquarters, and their daily activities. Then, they got a call. Some magical being is doing ‘something’ in downtown. So they left, and tried to solve the problems. Meanwhile, the community is more questioning about their existence. And, so did Hellboy felt. He wanted to be public. No more hiding. And, there’s their chance. While handling the problem, Hellboy threw out of the window, and fell into the middle of the crowd. So, he’s got his publicity.

Meanwhile, the ancient kingdom of magical being is on hysteria. The king’s son, Prince Nuada, is returned and claiming his kingdom position to rule the world over human. He’s back, with his own plan. He’s claiming for the throne which control The Golden Army. And so, because the king didn’t agree, he killed his own father, and took the throne piece. So, now he got two pieces. Need one more, to get the throne to be perfect. But, it’s not easy, because it was held by his twin-sister, Princess Nuala who’s running away.

While handling the former problems, Hellboy and his team met Princess Nuala. Then, they know about The Golden Army, and the plan from Prince Nuada. So, Hellboy and his team do anything needed to stop The Golden Army to be released by Prince Nuada, and make a new war against human.

I’m so astonished by this movie. I’ve heard about the ancient kingdom of magical being, and their war against human. I praise the movie’s scriptwriter for his creativity. And also, I admire the effects on this movie. Overall, lot things on this movie, who can make the audience amazed. Not only by the visual of the movie, but also the story itself. Well, I think it was because the strength of the character from Hellboy, and also the production crew (includes director, producer, etc.) whose involved totally for this movie.

One word for Hellboy II – The Golden Army: FABULOUS!

"How long are we gonna do the same thing?"

“Cigar. Cuban. Now you pissed me off!” says the protagonist of Guillermo Del Toro’s latest venture Hellboy II: The Golden Army as the baddie’s sidekick Wink, yields a blow to his face, making his favorite tool fall into water. With a face that looks like a cross of a samurai and X-Men mutant beast, Hellboy (Codename Hellboy) is a character right out of the pulp magazines.  And with a name like that and a storyline that aids the use of eye-candy incredibly, the producers would always rest assured. Plus one to the count of superhero films in 2008.

So we have here this bunch of four central ultra-cool mutants – The cigar chewing, beer boozing, borderline-colonel Hellboy (Ron Perlman), the earth element, The timid and brainy Abe (Doug Jones), the  water ingredient, the intensely anxious Liz (Selma Blair), the fire girl and Johann Krauss (James Dodd) the German intellectual forming the wind element of the group bound by (the absence of) the fifth element. All hell breaks loose when the exiled Prince Nuada (Luke Goss) of the mythical world decides to call it quits with the truce with the humans that called for peace and aided the banishment of their indestructible “Golden Army”. The film’s best moment, perhaps, comes around this point where we see the mythical prince practicing his sword in a fairly mythical milieu and just as he finishes, a high speed train whizzes past behind him! One feels that he is in for a great time. NO.

But for this, the prince has to unite the three pieces of the all-powerful golden crown that controls the army and hence break his bonds with his family that preserves two of the pieces. Meanwhile, Hellboy and Liz are trying to reconcile with the discerning eyes of the human world and form a happy little familial world for themselves. And when their paths cross, it’s the same thing all over again. Villain hurts hero, hero gets back big time. All this happens on a high-speed, immensely attractive vehicle called Computer Graphics that seems to never tire the audience. Year after year, be what the form, this boon (?) given by science has been regularly and faithfully exploited.

It is clear that Del Toro has the uncanny ability to blend elements of the ever enchanting world beyond the natural – the mythical – with the harsh realities of the existential one. But where Pan’s Labyrinth (2006) scored was in its treatment of the two worlds. Those worlds never saw each other, those worlds were never affected the clockwork of each other, those worlds were bliss. Here, Del Toro has let one world loose into another, arguably corrupting not only the integrity of the worlds but also of the plot itself. The Golden Army hence becomes no better than a CG-driven superhero flick that succumbs to market demand.

Of course, the film has its own charming moments where you tend to forget all the stereotype moments so far. Consider the scene where Hellboy and Abe retire in the library after a hard day’s work. They listen to “Popular Love Songs”, sipping loads and loads of beer, singing along unabashedly and cruising into a hilariously contemplative mood. One does forget that these guys aren’t humans and smiles all the way. Additionally, Hellboy is amusing with all his one liners and his thinking-with-his-knuckles attitude. But that’s just about everything that you take back from the two hours of runtime. Like Iron Man (2008), The Golden Army also seems to rely too much on these things.

Clichés galore, The Golden Army seems like an exercise in typical Hollywood film craft. The cool and funny gang of superheroes, check. The megalomaniac baddie who turns out to be the boss, check. A thin thread of romance between the good side and the bad one, check. Sacrifice of a lesser but lovable character for the greater good, check. CG flood, manipulative score, tilted camera angles, check, check and check. Once can go on and on, but somebody’s got to do the job. Every year, there seem to come a few films that offer what the audience wants but are so easy to be smashed. But if not for them, we would not be appreciating better ones, would we?

Verdict:

It’s a sequel no one could have expected. Despite being a beautifully produced and directed film, the first Hellboy did not do very well at the boxoffice. And we all know that if the first one doesn’t do too well, don’t do a sequel (which is something that the makers of Silly Movie 2 should have learnt). However, Guillermo Del Toro is not one to be discouraged.

The film picks up at least a few months after the end of the first film (although the exact time is not obvious); Hellboy and his team are still working for a covert government department dedicated to paranormal occurrences. All the familiar cast has returned, including Selma Blair reprising her role as Liz, who is now dating and living with Hellboy. Like the first film, The Golden Army draws a lot of its charm from this dysfunctional, unlikely relationship. Somehow The Golden Army seems to straddle the worlds of action, fantasy, comedy and romance all at once. It’s odd to see comic-turn-movie characters played with so much depth and believability; which is clearly what happens when casting is done correctly. Hellboy is once again played by the ever-charismatic Ron Perlman, who really makes the movie what it is. His comic timing is always spot on, and he seems to have the ability to make otherwise corny lines sound completely natural.

This time, the team are faced with a new evil, in the form of the elf Prince Nuada. Looking like an albino with a steroid addiction, Prince Nuada is a finely trained warrior. His movements are a graceful as a dancer, which presents a great juxtaposition to Hellboy’s “brawl-like” style of fighting. Played by Luke Goss (who some may remember as Nomak from Blade II, which Ron Perlman also co-starred in), Nuada plans on raising a giant robot army, with the goal of wiping out the human race and taking back the earth for the mythical creatures, who have been long forgotten by humans after being driven into hiding. The film includes some spectacular settings and all new creatures, including the Troll Markets and a giant leaf monster. This may not sound all that impressive but trust me, it’s good. You have to see it to appreciate it. Be warned though, the first ten minutes include a nasty new creature known as the “tooth fairy”… don’t let the name fool you, these little beasts are anything but friendly.

Guillermo Del Toro is fast becoming one of my favourite directors. With films like the academy award winning Pan’s Labyrinth under his belt, Del Toro certainly knows how to direct fantasy. He has created a truly beautiful film, with a great humanistic feel to it, despite being centred around a non-human character.

It has been a long time since I have seen a film of this calibre. Sequels are very rarely as good as the original (save for Terminator 2: Judgement Day perhaps), but I believe this film surpasses the first Hellboy. With more and more superhero/comic book films hitting the screens, true depth of character and plot is getting harder to find. The Golden Army brings something new to the genre; it has a beautiful aesthetic, and characters who are actually believable. Hellboy is so boyish, and so rough around the edges that he could be any average bloke in the world… save for the fact he is bright red and has one arm made of stone. He broods, he drinks, and he loves cats. Now that’s something I can respect.

Além de deixar o espectador grudado na tela como uma boa aventura inspirada nos quadrinhos deve fazer, assistir a Hellboy 2: O Exército Dourado (Hellboy 2: The Golden Army), de Guillermo del Toro, também nos deixa extasiados com a beleza visual do filme. Os personagens são muito bem contruídos, o mundo subterrâneo é repleto de detalhes exóticos que se descortinam diante de nossos olhos e o Exército Dourado (foto acima), que dá título ao filme, é de uma beleza ímpar, simplesmente exuberante, e deixa no espectador um gostinho de “quero mais”. Além disso, a história não economiza nos momentos de bom-humor, muitos deles explorados a partir da ranhetice do herói infernal. Definitivamente, este filme é para se ter em casa, quando for lançado em DVD ou Blu-Ray.

Beberapa bulan yang lalu aku pernah nonton yang film pertama di salah satu televisi swasta kita, awalnya aku malah nggak tahu kalau film itu emang bagus, cuma nurut pendapat temanku saja sih, tapi ternyata memang bagus yah, si setan merah ini emang kelihatan powerful banget, dan kayaknya sudah sering banget diulang-ulang yah yang film pertama di TV..

It’s been quite a long time since I made a new post for this blog. My apologies. I found no interest in the mid-August to mid-September movies recently shown here in my locality. Then at last, just last week, Hellboy 2: The Golden Army finally opened here in the Philippines. Adding to that was Journey to the Center of the Earthbeing finally being shown here in Baguio City when it was actually screened all around the Philippines months ago. That is one trouble that a movie freak such as myself faces: Delayed screening dates lasting for at least two months. But at least they were still screened for the local’s enjoyment. Only thing is, I’ve already read the plot synopsis of Hellboy II on Wikipedia. Talk about spoilers.

It was in the late afternoon of Last Friday that I got the privilege of being reunited with Hellboy (aka Red), Abe Sapien (aka Blue) and Liz Sherman (aka Fire Lady?). Joining them is the infamous gas-man (ectoplasmic being, actually), Johann Krauss. Their adventure, this time, extends beyond the standard supernatural (the spiritual kind). They now face the supernaturals of the earth (as in the case of Lord of the Rings, the beings of Middle Earth): dwarfs, trolls, and tooth fairies. It’s a good diversion actually, which adds richness to the central story plot of Hellboy. Additional characters would be the golden army itself which resembles the primitive iron man. Supporting characters are much more vibrant in this installment, as well as the effects, costumes, and make-up. The opening sequence was in CGI, more like the clay-like animation. With Del Toro at the director’s seat, Hellboy brought a refreshing experience combining goth, art, and fantasy.

Golden Armypresents the vulnerability of the characters: Hellboy and Liz in marital disputes, Abe Sapien falling in love, Hellboy and Abe Sapien getting drunk (???), those kinds of things. We get to see a school-aged Hellboy. Also, the superheroes at long last get to be in the spotlight of being famous (at Hellboy’s constant urging, anyway). But in the end, Hellboy realizes that the celebrity status is not always a dream to die for.

Watching the film gave me an impression of being a cross between Pan’s Labyrinth and Harry Potter. The mythical characters belong to Pan’s Labyrinth and the abodes of these characters, such as the Troll Market, belonging to Harry Potter. But what makes it original is it IS a superhero movie with out-of-this-world superheroes. All in all, a satisfying second installment, with a possible third.

In case you were wondering, I titled this post “Two Kids” due to the fact that Liz is ‘gonna have two babies. Guess who’s the father?
