It’s the greatest story ever told.
A God pursues foes whose hearts turned cold.
The greatest story ever told.
Restoring all that the enemy stole.
The greatest story ever told.
The glory of Christ is the goal, behold.
The greatest story ever told.
It’s the greatest.

Alright check it: let’s go back in time, brethren. Divine lessons always keep your mind guessing. The glory of the Triune God is what I’m stressing. The origin of humankind was fine. Blessings were plenteous. God is amazingly generous. Crazy benefits in a state of innocence. God told the man what he could taste was limited. Not long after came our nemesis in Genesis. He scammed well, man fell, damned to hell. The whole human race—he represented it. Fooled by the serpent, man through his work, woman through birth—even the earth ruled by the curses. But instead of a wake immediately. God said her Seed would be the One to crush the head of the snake. Yo, wait what is this? Whoa, a gracious gift! In Jehovah’s faithfulness He clothed their nakedness. This was so they would know their Savior’s kiss and bliss. But first, many growing pains exist suffering in the worst form, ugly deeds. Eve’s firstborn seed made his brother bleed. Indeed things got progressively worse. Every section of the earth is been affected by the curse. And though God’s judgments against sin were gory, praise the Lord! It’s not the end of the story.

Next scene: man’s sin was extreme. God gets steamed, man gets creamed. The Lord is so Holy that He drowned them in the water. Fire in the valley of slaughter – Sodom and Gomorrah. But at the same time, He’s so gracious and patient that from one man He created a whole nation. Eventually enslaved by the mentally depraved, they cried out to the only One with the strength that He could save. He brought them out with signs and wonders – satisfied their hunger. Then He appeared on Mount Sinai in thunder. Where He laid down the law for God-ruled government. Commonly referred to as the Mosaic covenant. Sin was imputed. So for man to know he’s unrighteous, God instituted animal sacrifices. This was to show our constant need for atonement. And when it came to sin, the Lord would never condone it. And when His people disobeyed and went astray, He raised up prophets and kings to lead them in the way. But they would get foul with their idolatry—wet and wild prophecy—send them into exile. To take their punishment like a grown man. Then with His own hand He placed them back in their homeland. And while in their forefather’s land they dwelt, they awaited the arrival of Emmanuel.

After 400 silent years filled with sighs and tears. In Bethlehem the Messiah appears. God in the flesh—Second Person of the Trinity. At thirty begins His earthly ministry. Baffling cats with accurate, exact facts and back-to-back miraculous acts. A stumbling block to the self righteous. But the humbled—His flock, said “There’s no one else like this.” He came from heaven to awake the numb. Demonstrated His power over nature, son. A foretaste of the Kingdom and the age to come. But the reason He came was to pay the sum for the depths of our wickedness, our wretched sinfulness. Bless His magnificence! He is perfect and innocent. Yet He was wrecked and His death. He predicted it. Next He was stretched, paid a debt that was infinite. He said that He finished it. Resurrected so the elect would be the recipients of its benefits. Through faith and penitence we get to be intimate. His grace is heaven sent, it never diminishes. Now the Holy Spirit indwelling is the evidence for heaven’s future residents who truly represent Jesus, the Author, Producer, Director, and Star of a story that will never, ever end!

So, the competition’s over. This is officially THE BEST POST that will ever grace my humble little blog. As a pre-Thanksgiving treat (posted early, ’cause who actually surfs the net on T-day?), MY MOTHER agreed to write me a little guest post. While, judging by her stellar comments on this blog, I knew it would be pretty fabulous, I didn’t really what a doozy it would be. What follows is, she claims, the Really Quite True story of my conception. I — I don’t even know what to say, except: 1) I can 100% vouch for her story in re: The Ex last Thanksgiving, and 2) can you just imagine how friggin’ wonderful and hilarious my family’s Thanksgiving table talk is?! ENJOY!

__

The holidays are upon us, and as an empty nester I’ve become extremely sentimental: longing for the days one could zip off to Walmart and buy a carload of plastic Christmas toys, wrap them and that was that. The simplicity of construction paper turkeys, baking cookies, trimming a tree, writing cards and hanging stockings was all so fun and the nostalgia makes me cry. I will not bore you with stories of the “Unfair Christmas” etc. Let me pop another Zoloft and make it a 200 mg day. On a more personal note, Christmas and Immaculate Conception make me think of Sister (Sister does not like to discuss XES, so we told her she was conceived just like Baby Jesus), and Thanksgiving and the turkey baster reminds me of TKOG.

With Dad in the Amazon (Manaus to be exact) with no Internet connection, I can freely tell the story of TKOG’s conception. Oh, yes, for years I told TKOG that she was conceived on the eve of Sister’s christening in England. That, however, was a lie and a big one at that! (A sidebar: guessing that Sister was bound to be an atheist, we insisted that she be christened Church of England. Now, to my delight, the guys in Rome say that she can be a Catholic to boot.) But I digress and so the NTKOG conception story continues.

For years I’ve read the tabloids and tacky women’s magazines with storylines of “how to lose 40 pounds in two weeks,” “bright ideas” (use higher wattage light bulbs!), “how to de-clutter your house,” and my favorite: “cupcakes for every holiday.” There was one story that always stood out in my mind. There were two sisters: one had a child and the other could not get pregnant. In-vitro fertilization was way too expensive, so the simple solution was to use the brother-in-law’s sperm in a turkey baster. This involved a magazine, a turkey baster and brother-in-law. Insert turkey baster in sister who is without child and viola: sister magically becomes pregnant without the hassle and expense of fertility doctors.

Since Dad was on the road most of the time, and Sister needed a playmate, one thing lead to another. Occasionally I would go out to a club that featured comedians and variety acts. On one occasion I came across this act who actually played music on a turkey baster. No kidding. He fascinated me and I thought if I could just have one more child, let it be from the sperm of a musical turkey baster man. I guess I had drunk too much wine — in fact, I know I did. My limit is two glasses; the third is a mistake and the fourth is like sodium pentathol (ask TKOG’s ex about last Thanksgiving Eve when at a deli in L.A. I asked him what his intentions were towards TKOG and then proceeded to chide him as to why he would order spaghetti in a world-famous deli).

My real father shows off his instruments...

Anyway, the Turkey Baster Musician and I hatched out a plan that he would send me a sample of his manliness via United States Express Mail (more cost effective than Federal Express)and that together we would create a NTKOG or NTKOB. He was excited because no one would date him–ever–and I was excited because I was going to surprise TKOG’s “dad” with the news of my pregnancy, which was timed with his homecoming. But, it was not to be. When the postman delivered the specimen from TBM the little rat dogs (there were three at the time) grabbed the unsuspecting postman by the legs, jumped up, tackled him and ate most of the package: thus foiling our plan.

Foreplay?!

I was in despair, frantic, not on antidepressants and very, very angry. I shouted at the postman, gave him a new turkey baster that I had bought for Thanksgiving and asked him to go to the side of the house and fill the thing up. He did, and without giving further intimate details, TKOG was conceived. We never told her “dad” the entire truth, but he always wondered why TKOG anxiously awaited the mailman, and commented that she looked a little bit Hawaiian and not much like Sister, who resembled BJ complete with halo.

This is a true story (although Sister may have her doubts about looking like BJ) and I wish all the readers of NTKOG and my dear family a very Happy Thanksgiving. Rest assured that the little beastie rat dogs will be feasting on non-basted turkey drumsticks.

___

Amazing, right?! Also, dude: turkey basters, illegitimate children, sperm-eating dogs — ohhh you better believe this is TMI Thursday bound. Check out Livit, Luvit for more amazing TMI Thursday goodness!
“A magnificent film, handled with reverence, artistic appreciation and admirable restraint

“A magnificent film, handled with reverence, artistic appreciation and admirable restraint” (NewYork Daily News), this glorious epic is an inspiring, grand-scale recreation of the life of Jesus of Nazareth, from His humble birth and teachings to His crucifixion and ultimate Resurrection. Lavishly produced at a cost of $20 millionan enormous amount for the timeand honored with five 1965 Academy Award(r) nominations*, this exceptional motion picture is exquisitely beautiful. Now fully restored to its original theatrical brilliance with intermission and overture, it is truly The Greatest Story Ever Told. *Cinematography (Color), Original Score, Art Direction (Color), Costume Design (Color), Special Visual Effects

The life of Christ got an excessively long treatment (260 minutes, later trimmed to 195) in this 1965 film directed by George Stevens (The Diary of Anne Frank). Max von Sydow does beautiful work as Jesus–his spontaneous mourning at discovering his friend Lazarus has died is not like anything in other New Testament epics–and Stevens renders the familiar tale with a handsome authenticity. But the project is nearly undone by an unwise gimmick in which seemingly half of Hollywood’s living stars at the time make brief (often very brief) cameo appearances, some of which are ridiculous. But there is a lot to like in the film, and Von Sydow’s sensitive nobility sticks in the memory. –Tom Keogh

The life of Jesus Christ is powerfully chronicled in this intelligent, gripping epic starring JEFFREY HUNTER, ROBERT RYAN, RIP TORN and a cast of thousands. From the producer of the epic spectaculars El Cid and The Fall of the Roman Empire and the director of Rebel Without a Cause and 55 Days at Peking comes a vivid retelling of the world’s greatest story.

This 1961 version of Jesus’ story gives historical context to the best-known Biblical tale and features many memorable moments, such as a moving Sermon on the Mount and a vixenish Salome dancing for her stepfather in a performance that rivals today’s MTV video offerings. Orson Welles keeps the 168-minute film moving along with informative narration helpful to those who haven’t read the New Testament in a while. Made with backgrounds that resemble Southern California more than Palestine and a European and American cast–including a blonde, blue-eyed Jesus and an Irish-accented Mary–this movie has the definite stamp of Hollywood. –Kimberly Heinrichs

In the tumultuous aftermath of the Civil War, Union Calvary officer John Henry Thomas takes his hero

In the tumultuous aftermath of the Civil War, Union Calvary officer John Henry Thomas takes his heroic men west while southerner James Langdon takes his soldiers to Mexico. When their paths cross, they forge an uneasy friendship that is quickly tested as they get caught between Mexican rebels and the Emperor’s forces, and find themselves fighting side by side.

John Wayne, that pillar of machismo, was well aware that costar Rock Hudson was gay, yet he prized him as a boon companion, a fellow professional, and one hell of a bridge player. Each plays a Civil War commander who, after the ceasefire, leads a community of home folks into Mexico to make a fresh start. Hudson is a Southern gentleman; Wayne commanded the Yankee cavalry at Shiloh, where Hudson’s brother died. Nevertheless, Rock, with his extended family, and Duke, with his troop of cowboys and 3,000 horses to sell to Emperor Maximilian, soon join forces to outgun banditos and beam paternally over the budding romance between their respective daughter and son (an adopted Indian played by footballer Roman Gabriel with Crystal Gayle hair). Lingering North-South animosities are celebrated in an obligatory communal fistfight in the Andrew V. McLaglen manner, and the showdown with both Maximilian’s lancers and the rebel Juaristas is disconcertingly perfunctory. –Richard T. Jameson

In the past few years (or has it been forever), I’ve developed a tendency to get behind rapper

In the past few years (or has it been forever), I’ve developed a tendency to get behind rappers based on their personality and history rather than their actual musical output. This is closely linked to getting behind a rapper because of their swagger/voice/production (See: Gucci Mane, Young Jeezy, Rick Ross, Pastor Troy Rich Boy), which I don’t have a problem with because it can lead to some really exciting songs: Pastor Troy’s Saddam; Officer Rawse’s Hustlin’; Jeezy’s entire first album; Rich Boy’s Throw Some D’s. Even though this increased emphasis on personality and production devalues the lyrics in rap by putting rap at the level of vacuous pop (a form of music where everything is owing to the sonic aesthetic rather than to the lyrical content), there always manages to be an artist who is able to keep things interesting on both the production/personality/swagger level and the lyrical level. This person used to be David Banner.

David Banner has never made a completely enjoyable album (Mississippi was almost there, and I never listened to Dem Firewater Boyz album) but he’s come close, and when he’s failed before (at least half of Certified) you could forgive him because he was going for some kind of commercial success in order to further his philanthropic endeavors. When a song like Play would come out, no matter how creepy it was, I could always get behind David Banner’s vision: do a half commercial album in order to get the recognition and respect of a younger generation and to get the money to help that generation by continuing charity work, hurricane relief, inner-city programs etc – and the other half would serve to voice some of his more real and pressing concerns about a culture where a rapper has to step in and help out his community. The split between cash-grab songs and angry, semi-intellectual, semi-conscious songs always made for a great mix on David Banner’s albums, which is why I felt uneasy when I read that Banner’s newest album The Greatest Story Ever Told was going to be all hits, doing away with the anger and black culture-conscious lyrics. I still had hope though, even after hearing songs like the ‘jam everything into one song, use 3 high profile guests, mix rnb and everything together and still come out luke warm’ “9mm” and the promising but flawed ‘jam almost everything into one song, including a sax solo (?!) and an rnb break and come out pretty good’ “Suicide Doors” feat. UGK. The latter song has one incredible Pimp C line: “My jewelry weighs a ton I bought a necklace for my dick / And my nuts got a Myspace page”, but a lot of it is a mess with few other standouts.

Now, I’m all about hits. If David Banner could have made an actual hit album with enjoyable songs while doing away with his previous conscious lyrics, I could have handled/enjoyed it. But Greatest Story is not a hit album, it’s a flop. The single “Get Like Me” feat. Yung Joc and Chris Brown was mediocre and was met with mediocre airplay, the second single, the Weezy sampling “Shawty Say” is uninspired and samples “Lollipop“ (!?!). Even when Banner seems to return to form and gets slightly conscious and introspective it’s with the most cliche and played out garbage like “Cadillac on 22s (part 2)” and “Hold On” feat. Marcus. “Hold On” is about some anonymous young kid in the ghetto named Timmy (no kidding), and the song treads tiredly on old Banner content but comes across as stale and blunt. The song’s about trying to get this kid off the streets and to keep him from selling crack, and it’s working but then the kid gets killed. Banner is mad and threatens to kill all these men and then the song breaks to have a dramatized shoot-out threat session. Then it’s over, and “Cadillac on 22s Part 2″ starts; if you’ve heard the original, think of that song but cheesed out X 1000 with boring production. Not good.

There are some good songs and good points raised on the album, but they are few. The intro song is quite good, it’s got a beat that sounds like a sinister “Ayo Technology” and I like when Banner says “This is Bushenomics / George is a modern day Ronald Raegan”. This song kind of embodies what I was hoping to hear on half the album: angry and fresh commentary on politics, culture, the streets etc. It’s definitely worth checking out for his interesting perspective on gangsterism and the cowardice involved in fighting your own community rather than the forces involved in ghettoizing that community. And I swear, I’m not into conscious/political lyrics, their appeal is exclusive to David Banner. Another stand-out is the (confusing) extended threat to snitches on B.A.N. which samples “The Boondocks” for the chorus.

When it comes down to it, I’m most disappointed with this album because it didn’t do anything: as a sell-out attempt at chart-topping popularity it failed, as a half hits/half introspection album it failed; commercially it failed and critically it failed. It just makes me lose hope in David Banner, hitherto the most interesting character in rap. I can accept that he doesn’t find anything valuable in conscious lyrics, but it also seems like he’s out of touch with the kids or just does not have the production talent (is talent the right word? I mean, Souljah Boy knows how to get the kids on his side) to reach them on a commercial/bubble gum level. So, what does he have? He’s been reduced to a personality at this point, but doesn’t have the production on his side that makes a schmo like Jeezy palatable. I always hope for the best, and if not a return to form, at least something commercially viable or entertaining. It’s also possible that I’m way off base here, and have built up Banner to be something he’s not but I refuse believe that he’s always been a middle of the road, no ear, uninspired personality, the way he appears on this latest release.

Album: The Greatest Story Ever Told

Rating: ★★★½

Review: First off, lets do some math on “The Greatest Story Ever Told.” 22 tracks minus a handful of interludes, intros and instrumentals puts us at about 17 tracks to actually jam to. Of those, the first radio and music video single is Get Like Me featuring Chris Brown and Yung Joc… you cant really go wrong there. Then there is the Lollipop sampled Shawty Say joint, which is tight, but the whole Lollipop, A Millie remix thing is reaaalllly getting old. Still, Shawty Say is fire. The next single off the album is titled 9mm and its loaded with cameos: Akon, Lil Wayne, Snoop Dogg. Don’t miss that joint. We are also highly recommending Suicide Doors featuring UGK. Other tracks to check out on this album are Banner’s Syrup Sippin and K.O. Lastly, do not miss Jazze Pha’s Fly, a track that sounds like old-school David Banner. Overall, this CD has some jams on it, but there’s a lot of filler. Check out Uncle Swac for one of the better interludes/skits.
