A Canadian company based in Québec, The Green Beaver Company was started by a wife-and-hubby team, Karen Clark, a biochemist, and Alain Ménard, a microbiologist. Years before “natural” and “organic” became beauty buzzwords, Clark’s career at a large pesticide company had her spooked about the chemicals in standard personal-care products. She began cooking up all-natural concoctions in their kitchen at night, and when she and Ménard decided to start a family, the idea of producing natural products on a larger scale blossomed.

Natural toothpaste was one of their first offerings and continues to be one of their most popular. Green Beaver’s range now includes hair care, body washes and lotions, face care, deodorant and baby products, all of which are 100% natural, biodegradable, and paraben-, sulfate-, pthalate- and petrolatum-free.

Fiercely Canadian as well as enviromentally conscious, Clark and Ménard ensure that as many organic and natural ingredients as possible are locally sourced to reduce the company’s eco-footprint. Their packaging contains post-consumer recycled material and is recyclable as well. Next in the Green Beaver adventure is developing Canadian plant-based natural preservatives and a new organic-only section of their manufacturing facilities.
