Being that The Dead Weather is something of an indie supergroup — Jack White (The White Stripes, The Raconteurs), Alison Mossheart (The Kills), Dean Fertita (Queens of the Stone Age), and Jack Lawrence (The Greenhornes, The Raconteurs) — it was naturally a beacon for the press and a hotly anticipated debut. In one regard, the attention will have been worth it; The Dead Weather sound very much like they’d be a tremendous live act. Granted, an album’s song content doesn’t usually change much when it hits the stage (excepting perhaps The Fiery Furnaces), but where it misfires, it can be compensated for with gusto.

Horehound, however, for all its swampy atmosphere and thunderous blues riffage, is actually a bit boring. Where it’s good, it tends to be downright noteworthy, and where it meanders, it gets old fast. There seems to be a chronic lack of spark, as if the group sat back and expected the magic to work itself. Jack White is one of the hardest-working men in the indie rock world, but lifeless tracks like “Rocking Horse” and “3 Birds” make him sound as if he’s relying on nothing more than a vocal track doused with reverb and a net of all-star talent to carry him past unmemorable riffs and melodies. The Raconteurs have very much been a successful outing, as well as The Kills, with their gritty minimalism, and obviously The White Stripes, too, with their reinvented brand of rock and roll; the makings are all there, but the execution falters in some pretty noticeable ways.

“Hang You Up From The Heavens” and “Will There Be Enough Water?” are obvious highlights, but three tracks in, Horehound gives way to “I Cut Like a Buffalo,” its bizarre lyrics a foggy, thoughtless blight: “you know I look like a woman but / I cut like a buffalo.” Vocalist Alison Mossheart has dirty swagger aplenty on most tracks here, so it isn’t for lack of effort on her part, it just seems like the songwriting hadn’t solidified before they committed the songs to tape. “Who’s got it figured out? / left-right left-right got it figured out,” Jack White intones on “Treat Me Like Your Mother,” one of several underdeveloped tracks that didn’t quite make it out of jam territory. Overall, the arrangements aren’t fleshed out enough to warrant anything more than an EP; the band, songs, and album all formulated in under three weeks, and in far more places that one would have hoped, it shows. Not so much a swing and a miss, just a disappointing, watery misuse of copious amounts of evident talent.

El Greenhornes son una banda de rock de Cincinnati, Ohio, con Craig Fox quien es la voz y la guitarra, Patrick Keeler a la batería y Jack Lawrence en el bajo. La banda ha publicado una larga duración álbumes y singles. Su más reciente publicación es una compilación de material publicado anteriormente, Sewed Soles. La banda con la colaboración de Holly Golightly, «que se ponga fin», fue el tema musical de Jim Jarmusch en 2005 la película, Broken Flowers.

Lawrence y Keeler, junto con Detroit, músico y productor Dave Feeny, se encontraban en el Do-Whaters, el grupo formado y dirigido por Jack White de la banda de Detroit The White Stripes para Loretta Lynn’s 2004 álbum Van Lear Rose. Lawrence Keeler y ahora están en el trabajo en The Raconteurs con White y Benson .

El año era 1992 o tal vez 1993, de seguro fue cuando estaba aún en el colegio cuando a través de una columna que escribía Manuel Kalmanovitz en El Espectador me enteré de este gran director. Tal vez fue la forma en que Kalmanovitz escribía, tal vez era la sensación de no saber qué iba a estudiar yo o tal vez fue esa misma fantasía proyectado en Jim Jarmusch que faltándole un año de estudios decide hacer otra cosa. Lo más divertido es que encontré los apuntes de esos días, entonces, muy posiblemente, haga un esfuerzo y escriba sobre todos esos directores que me apasionaban en ese entonces.

La oportunidad en este momento es para Broken Flowers, una peli fascinante escrita y dirida por el mismo Jarmusch y con unas actuaciones espectaculares de Bill Murray como principal y Jeffrey Wright como secundario. En el reparto igualmente especiales están Sharon Stone, Cloë Sevigny, Jessica Lange, Tilda Swinton y Frances Conroy.

La peli es el desarrollo de una investigación de corte aficionado orquestada por el vecino de un pudiente ex-vendedor de computadoras que es informado que tiene un hijo de diez y nueve años, que huyó de la casa y que muy posiblemente fue a buscar a su padre. El dilema es que este envejecido Donjuán debe recordar hace veinte años con quién estaba y si alguna de sus novias podría ser la madre del supuesto hijo. Convencido por el entusiasta vecino emprende una aventura burguesa recorriendo medio país en busca de estas cinco mujeres y se vuelve el calvario de este sibarita que todo el plan fue organizado por un hombre de medianos recursos, con cinco hijos y con la mente más ahorrativa posible, luego entonces, el resto de la peli vemos a un hombre cansado de su travesía, viajando en clase ejecutiva, con carros de mediana clase y con el rigor de una vida llena de lujos haciéndole cuenta de cobro. La imagen es súper divertida y al igual que esta, la peli está cargada con decenas y decenas de situaciones de un humor muy fino y elaborado.

Pueda ser que acostumbre a buscar simbolismos, conjeturas, metáforas donde no las hay creo que esta peli es perfecta para elucubrar muchas teorías y conexiones, no se si sean todas correctas pero igual el viaje de Don Johnston es de hermenéutica pura lo cual es un aliciente para seguir pensando y pensando. En este sentido, para mi es importante destacar todo lo rosado que aparece como un nuevo protagonista, estas bellísimas mujeres en el pasado del Donjuán, que el nombre original de la peli era Dead Flowers y cambió a Broken Flowers y de nuevo el televisor (un protagonista especial en las pelis de Jarmusch) que también nos da pistas de ciertos pensamientos tácitos en la obra.

Quién es el verdadero hijo que lo está buscando? Quién es la madre que pensó en el agobiado padre y le mandó esa carta de alerta? Qué le dejó a Johnston y a Winston esta aventura? Para qué dañar la percepción de la peli en los espectadores, de seguro cada uno sale con una versión de los hechos que hace a la peli más que interesante, la hace una verdadera obra de arte y del entretenimiento. La peli obtuvo cuatro premios independientes tres para Jarmusch por su excelente dirección y uno para Jeffrey Wright como mejor actor de reparto.

Bill Murray pueda que se repita actoralmente en ese papel egolatra, prepotente y pretencioso en cada una de sus pelis, me parece que cuando el entorno se sincroniza con esa actuación él logra unas acciones realmente conmovedoras hablo de Broken Flowers, Lost in Translation y Groundhog’s Day.

Finalmente, el último y más grandioso aporte de la peli, ese magnífico CD que le quema Winston a Don (“There Is an End” de Holly Golightly with The Greenhornes, ”Yegelle Tezeta” de Mulatu Astatke, ”Ride Yu Donkey” de The Tennors), ”I Want You” de Marvin Gaye, ”Yekermo Sew” de Mulatu Astatke, ”Not if You Were the Last Dandy on Earth” de The Brian Jonestown Massacre, ”Tell Me Now So I Know” de Holly Golightly, ”Gubèlyé” de Mulatu Astatke, ”Dopesmoker” de Sleep, Requiem in D minor, Op. 48 version de Oxford Camerata, ”Ethanopium” de Dengue Fever, Instrumental de Mulatu Astatke, ”Unnatural Habitat”  de The Greenhornes, ”Dreams” de The Allman Brothers Band, ”El Bang Bang” de Jackie Mittoo, ”Playboy Cha-Cha” de Mulatu Astatke, ”Mascaram Seteba” de Mulatu Astatke, ”Aire” de William Lawes, ”Fantasy” de William Lawes, ”Alone in the Crowd” de Mulatu Astatke) para que haga su travesía y se vuelva la banda sonora de la peli definitivamente le pone el toque de genialidad que le hacía falta a la peli, con sonidos del pasado y de tierras muy lejanas que alegran el corazón; es lo que finalmente conmueve el corazón frío de este casanova. Mi preferida: ”There Is an End” de Holly Golightly with The Greenhornes.

The Dead Weather’s release, Horehound is the feature of this music review. Although this record is the band’s freshman release, the musicians who make up The Dead Weather are not new to the music scene. The quartet is a a super group consisting of Alison Mosshart (The Kills), Jack White (The White Stripes), Dean Fertita (Queens of the Stone Age), and Jack Lawrence (The Greenhornes).

The Dead Weather formed in the first quarter of 2009 in Nashville, Tennessee. It is apparent that this band all had a hand in the development of Horehound due to the amalgamation of genres heard on the release. Some tracks are heavy while others are lo-fi garage and near the end, the sound is rooted in blues. It is often hard to remember that it is a single album being heard because of the mash up of sounds and yet, still transitions very nicely. White primarily plays the drums on the record while Mosshart takes control as the front woman of the group. Her sultry, cigarette smoker voice is brought along the tracks adding mystique and sexiness. Fertita and Lawrence do a great job as guitar and bass and contribute further levels of depth.

Horehound, thankfully, is not one of those albums that can be consumed automatically, rather only by truly listening to it a few times can the majesty be appreciated. Though the only slight problem that can be heard is the consistent inconsistency. By having a huge range on genres, it limits the group to really shine in just one. Though it can be argued that an aimless arrow never misses its mark. Despite the sometimes jumpiness, it is not a deal breaker.

Jack White är killen med många järn i elden och dyker upp lite överallt i olika musikprojekt. The White Stripes och The Raconteurs får nu sällskap av The Dead Weather på Jacks CV.

The Dead Weather består av Jack White på sång och trummor(!), Alison Mosshart på sång (The Kills), Dean Fertita på gitarr (Queens Of The Stone Age) och Jack Lawrence på bas (The Raconteurs och The Greenhornes).

Debutalbumet “Horehound” som just släppts är precis köpt och nerladdat till mitt iTunesbibliotek för hårdrotation i podden tillsammans med kvällens andra inköp som givetvis var Clutch nya “Strange Cousins From The West”.

Jack White blir mer och mer en av mina favoritmusiker både som låtskrivare och gitarrist. Nu sitter han i och för sig bakom trummorna i The Dead Weather men man hör ändå att det är han som styr väldigt mycket över både ljudbilden och låtskrivandet.

Well hello there!

Obviously it’s been ages since I posted here. Not because I didn’t feel like it, but because I was cut off the civilised world for two weeks. But no worries, I stil managed to gather some musical goodies during the past fourteen days! I’ve got a couple of new bands for you and 2 concert reviews. So get ready for a massive post.

First things first: on the second of july 2009 I was one of the lucky few to see the legendary reunion gig that Blur gave in Hyde Park (for the people who have been stuck on another planet for the last 20 years: Hyde park is in London). No need to say that it was totally awesome.  In combination with the amazing supporting bands, hypnotic brass ensemble (okay), golden silvers (good, but I’m convinced that they could of done a lot better, since they really have a lot of potential), foals (very nice!), and crystal castles (a lot of distortion, but it was a good start to get everyone on their feet) it was a very promising evening, although I was a it bummed out that friendly fires canceled their gig. Not a strategic move, if you ask me. As for Blur, they still sound just as good as they did 10 years ago. After Foals, everyone was dancy and nervous enough to see the stars of the evening. Damon Albarn even seemed to get a bit of emotional when he saw 100.000 people cheering for his britpop band. The crowd already went crazy when blur opened with she’s so high, the first track off their debut-album, Leisure. It was good to see that Graham Coxon really felt at home on the stage (because face it; he is one of the coolest guitarists alive). The expected hits followed. Songs such as ‘the universal’, ‘tender’,’ coffee and tv’,’ girls and boys’ and ‘parklife’ raised the gig to a the level where it’s supposed to be, that of a band that almost invented britpop. One of the surprises of the evening was the appearance of Phil Daniels (kevin from eastenders), who provided some lyrics to the 1994 smash hit ‘Parklife’. Albarn also revealed that his inspiration to the song came to him while he was strolling through Hyde Park one day. A while after the sun went down Blur finished off in style with two encores. Definitely one of the better comeback gigs of all time.

The second gig I saw took place in Cargo, London. Fight like apes introduced their first album. A small cute venue, which makes concerts really comfy and small, in a way. I can summarize Fight like Apes’ performance in three words: good, dancy and hilarious. The fun thing about fight like apes is that they interact a lot with the crowd, which makes their gig a good mix of humour and quality.  Their music is not really easy to label, but that’s probably one of their biggest advantages. They are touring through Europe this summer so go check ‘em out if you can see them at a festival close to your home!

As for random bands worth checking out: Metronomy, Telepathe and The dead weather are really worth a listen:

Metronomy: I discovered these guys through a friend of mine. Formed out of the ashes of  The Upsides and The Costumers, their music is kid of similar to Ratatat, but it it’s slightly more danceable and lively. There is absolutely no way you’d get through their album without moving your feet. They re-released their single ‘Radio Ladio’ earlier this year. It’s a single off their second album called ‘Nights out’. The band who supports them during their live performances also features former Lightspeed Champion membersAnna Prior (on drums) and Gbenga Adelekan (bass)If you haven’t heard of them yet I’d advise you to run to your local record store RIGHT NOW.

Telepathe: Following the trail of Crystal Castles, you’ll find Telepathe. Considering the reviews about their sucky concerts and inexperienced vocals, one would most likely not feel like buying the record, which I totally understand. It’s true that their first album, Dance Mother (which has been released some time ago and is produced by David Sitek) is quite disappointing, but their 2008 EP, Chrome’s on it, still gives them a lot of credit. I’m sure that these guys still have a lot to offer, they just need to dig a little deeper.

Last but not least, The dead Weather! This is Jack White’s latest project, a band that features Allisson Mosshart from The Kills on vocals, members from The Raconteurs,  Queens of the stoneage, the Greenhornes and Jack White himself on drums. Their first album is called ‘Horehound’. They’ve just released data for a north-American tour, hopefully Europe will be next.

Anyway, off to the real news….

Indie pop genius and Jack White sidekick, Brendan Benson, will finally be releasing his newest solo record on August 18 via ATO Records. Benson who is known to most as part of The Raconteurs, of course started off as a solo artist with a string of catchy and very poppy records.This will be his 4th album titled ’My Old, Familar Friend,’ which was recorded both in Nashville and England, both a long way from his Detroit roots. The first single has yet to be released but we do know it is titled ‘A Whole Lot Better’. Benson will also be doing a solo tour this summer which gives the Raconteurs a nice little break. Hopefully this time around Benson will get the full credit and attention he deserves that hasn’t always been present on his prior records.

The Racounteurs, banda dos amigos Jack White, Brendan Benson, Patrick Keeler e  Jack Larewnce, é hoje uma das bandas indie de maior expressão do rock internacional. Mas o que pouca gente conhece é a qualidade da primeira banda de Larewnce e Keeler, The Greenhornes, banda meio garage rock, meio soul.

Apesar da pausa devido aos projetos paralelos dos integrantes, The Greenhornes está na estrada desde meados de 1997 e conta com três álbuns, o último deles ‘Sewed Soles’ , de 2005.

The Greenhornes é essencialmente garage rock, mas jazz, rockabilly e, principalmente, mob britânico dos anos 60, como The Beatles, The Kinks, The Who e outros diversos ‘Thes’ da época, fazem parte da sua sonoridade. Eu particurlamente gosto muito do som da banda, especialmente do primeiro álbum, o homônimo ‘The Greenhornes’, de 2001.

¿Que sucede con Jack White?, ¿Porqué siempre nos sorprende cuando creemos que ya hizo todo lo que sabe hacer?, ¿No era suficiente con The White Stripes y The Raconteurs?.

Pues tal parece que para Él nunca será suficiente; como quiera que sea se lo agrdeceremos siempre recientemente y esto no es una naoticia para nadie ha formado una nueva banda con Alison Mosshart de The Kills ¡guapa, guapa, guapa! Jack  Lawrence bajista de los Raconteurs (que por cierto es mi favorito en dicha banda) pero también parte de The Greenhornes y Dean Fertita completa el cuarteto guitarrista de los Queens of  Stone Age.

If you’ve read any number of past posts on this blog, you’ll know that I’m a fan of Jack White and all of his various musical projects. Now the Third Man has a third band – The Dead Weather. This brand new rock outfit consists of White playing DRUMS, Alison Mosshart of The Kills handling lead vocals, Dean Fertita of Queens of the Stone Age on guitar, and Jack Lawrence of The Raconteurs and The Greenhornes on bass. The band was debuted to the world last month during a private showcase that also served as the grand opening for White’s brand new Third Man Records offices in Nashville.

As you can probably imagine, this is a radical departure from both of Jack White’s other bands. Although he’ll undoubtedly be the main draw and driving force behind the band (as the producer, owner of their record label, etc.), it will be interesting to see how his relative absence from the spotlight will influence the band’s direction. Their first full-length, Horehound, is scheduled for a June release, and two tracks are available to stream on the band’s site and to download from iTunes.

Last night I learned that The Dead Weather would play their first show EVER for the general public next Tuesday night at the Bowery Ballroom here in New York, so naturally I had to get tickets the moment they went on sale at 10am today. But apparently logging in at 9:45am and refreshing the site every 30 seconds until the tickets went available at 10:00 was not a good enough strategy, because as soon as I got into the site, tickets were gone. Thanks a lot. And this isn’t the first time I’ve been screwed over by Ticketmaster either.

I don’t know what’s worse: Ticketmaster being a horrible place to buy tickets, or the people who get tickets and then put them up on Craigslist immediately for $200. It’s one thing to buy a ticket, realize you can’t go, then put it up for sale. I can even understand trying to make a little profit if this is the case. But to buy a $25 ticket and then immediately post it for $200 is truly a crime worthy of public flogging. It’s clear you have no interest in going to the show and are trying to ruin the lives of people who actually care about the music. To all of you people who are posting tickets to this show on legalized scalping outlets, I wish you the best of luck – tickets are will call only, so no shady exchanges on crowded street corners can possibly take place.

And if anyone out there from Ticketmaster is listening…EVERYONE HATES YOU. We always have.

Brokeoffs UK tour announced for May/June

One of our favourite ever interviewees Holly Golightly will reissue three albums from her extensive back catalogue on April 20th through Damaged Goods as part of the label’s 21st birthday celebrations. All three will be issued on digipak CD and 12″ vinyl. No bonus tracks in sight though. The classic studio album Painted On, originally released in 1997, is said to be one of Holly’s favourite albums and features several songs that still crop up in her live sets these days, most notably ‘I Let My Daddy Do That’, which recently got a countrified makeover on 2007’s You Can’t Buy A Gun When You’re Crying (her first recording under the name of Holly Golightly & The Brokeoffs).

The other two albums are live recordings: 1998’s Up The Empire and 2004’s Down Gina’s At 3. Up The Empire was the first live album of Holly’s career and has been out of print for a while now. The Empire of the title refers to the ballroom in which it was recorded. Down Gina’s At 3 is a full 20-song set recorded in at the start of Holly’s 2004 US tour in support of her brilliant album Truly She Is None Other (2003). El hiperactivo Jack White (The White Stripes y The Raconteurs) pone en marcha un tercer grupo: The Dead Weather.

El cuarteto debutó en vivo el 11 de marzo pasado, en las oficinas del sello del propio White, Third Man Records, en Nashville (Estados Unidos).

El disco debut de The Dead Weather se llamará Horehound y verá la luz en junio. Como adelanto, han publicado Hang You From The Heavens, cuyo vídeo podéis ver aquí, y una versión de Gary Numan, Are Friends Electric?, disponible en iTunes.

Hello again, after this Christmas brief break. Well, i have no idea about who is Johnny, but he’s the only one who appreciated my first epic post on rock, so the second one will be dedicated to him. Gran banda de Rock desde Australia. Moitas influencias clásicas (AC/DC, Led Zep, e especialmente Black Sabbath) para unha banda da que posiblemente coñezades algunhas cancións, como por exemplo Woman, que foi a canción do anuncio do videoxogo Guitar Hero, ou Joker and the thief, do anuncio do Peugeot 308. Sacaron o seu disco homónimo en outubro de 2005. Agora mesmo pasan por un periodo de crise despois de que o baixista e o batería deixaran a banda. Será o seu fin ou un novo inicio?

Great band coming from Australia. Loads of classic influences (AC/DC, Led Zep, and Black Sabbath) for a band that you may know thanks to songs like Woman, used to promote video-game Guitar Hero, or , used in the Peugeot 308’s advert. De momento teñen só un disco (titulado Radio Moscow), pero parécenme unha das grandes bandas do momento. Nacen protexidos e influenciados polos Black keys. Lembran ao mellor do rock de guitarras dos primeiros 70’s: Hendrix, Led Zep, ou calquera banda daqueles tempos cun gran guitarrista que queiras nomear. Parker Griggs é un fenómeno como guitarrista, pero tamén canta, e incluso tocaba a batería cando a banda aínda non tiña un. E resulta que son de Iowa. Qué está a pasar nos profundos USA? Non sei, pero estes rapaces son bos de cojones. De momento tocan en salas pequenas, pero teñen todo para ser grandes.

They have recorded only one self-titled album, but they appear as one of the best r’n’r bands at this moment. They are promoted by Black Keys, and as their mentors, they remember good 70’s guitar rock: Hendrix, Led Zep… Parker Griggs is such a great guitar player, but he can also sing (and he also played drums, when the band had no drummer). Marabilla, marabilla, todo o mundo en pé ante os Von Bondies! Ou polo menos ante o seu primeiro disco, Lack of Communication (2001). Qué credes que se pode esperar dunha xente de Detroit que, ao saír dun concerto deGuitar Wolf, decide montar un grupo? Pois un discazo de rock cru, bravo, sacado directamente desde as tripas (e non insinúo que sexa unha merda, senón todo o contrario). É certo que co paso dos anos, os cambios nos membros da banda, e supoño que cun certo recoñecemento, o grupo moderou algo o seu estilo e grazas a iso conseguiu un certo éxito coa canción C’mon C’mon, que a min paréceme, cando menos, mediocre en comparación con temazos como este Rock ’n’ roll nurse. Rock do de verdade, do que fai suar e deixa a gorxa escocida. E pese á perda evidente, seguen a ser un bo grupo. E por certo, con chicas. Bravo!!! Xa estou farto de ir a concertos cheos de maromos.

Wonderful, wonderful, everybody stand up! Von Bondies are here! At least, hail their first record, Lack of Communication (2001). What can one expect from some people from Detroit who decided to form a band after a Guitar Wolf’s show? Just that, a raw album from the band’s gut. Some years later, with line-up changes and some success, they changed and softened their style and got a minor success with C’mon C’mon, although I think that is quite average, compared to the theme Rock’n’roll nurse. Real rock, that will make you sweat and let your throat irritated. Although their loss of energy, they are yet a good band. And with girls enrolled! Yahoo! I’m fed up of rock concerts crowded with tough guys.

Outra gran banda de Escocia (máis roqueiros que Bell & Sebastian, iso si), e de novo outra vocalista feminina, Adele Bethel, e vaia voz que ten, aínda que nalgunhas cancións a voz é masculina. Un grupo que gústanos moito tantoa Araceli como a min. Contando co seu propio estilo, recoñeceredes claras e variadas influencias, desde o garage ata Nick Cave. Outro grupo que podo recomendarvos a todos vós. A miña canción favorita deste grupo é Guilt complex.

 Another Scotish band (more rocky than Belle & Sebastian, though), and another female singer, Adele Bethel. She has a nice voice. Araceli and me really like this band. Although they have their own style, you’ll recognize influences going from old schooll garage bands to Nick Cave. Another group that many of you will like. My favourite song from this band is Guilt Complex

Veñen de Portugal. Os Sizo foron os grandes triunfadores do pasado Rock en Costa. Fan un rock moderno. Podería describilos como unha base rítmica rápida e repetitiva sobre a que se aboian un teclado, unha guitarra estridente e un vocalista que utiliza curiosos efectos de son, ata o punto de que o micro é un instrumento máis da banda. Cantan en inglés.

They come from Portugal. Sizo had a great success at last Rock en Costa. Their music can be described as modern rock; a fast and repetitive rhythmic base with a keyboard floating above, a strident guitar and a singer who uses sound effects, turning his microphone into another instrument. Se digo que abren para AC/DC na xira Black Ice, non debe quedar moito máis que comentar. Son de Irlanda do norte, fan hard rock do de toda a vida, pero no século XXI. Sacaron o seu primeirodisco, Rise, en 2006.

If I tell you that this band will open for AC/DC in their Black Ice Tour, there’s not many more to say. They are from Northern Ireland, they play old-style hard rock, and did edit their first album, Rise, in 2006.

Se nacer en Memphis marca, nacer en Detroit (Stooges, MC5, motown) tamén. Esta banda son capaces tanto de facer puro rock garaxeiro (como no disco Horndog Fest), como de lucirse con versións de temazos soul e da motown (como no disco Ultraglide in black), grazas á voz do seu cantante, Mick Collins. Despois de numerosos cambios de aliñación, na actualidade son 5 músicos, cunha característica especial, a dobre sección rítmica (dous baixos e dúas baterías), mentres que Collins canta e toca a guitarra.

If getting born in Memphis can mark a person’s live, getting born in Detroit (Stooges, MC5, Motown), also does. This band can play garage rock (as in their album Horndog Fest) and show their best covering classic themes from Motown and classic soul (as in their album Ultraglide in black), thanks to the powerfull voice of the singer, Mick Collins. After several line-up changes, nowadays their are 5 musicians, with a double rhythm section (two drummers and two bass players), while Collins sings and plays the guitar.

Os Greenhornes son outra banda que pertence á onda revival do garage. Eles defínense como Rock- Garage – Soul, e a verdade non é unha mala descrición. Sacaron o seu primeiro disco, Gun for you, en 1999. Escoitar a súa discografía é facer un repaso da historia do rock desde os anos 50 ata a actualidade. Unha boa banda, que merece realmente a pena.

Greenhornes are another band from the new wave of garage. They define themselves as Rock – Garage – Soul, and this description fits well on them. Listening to their songs is a review on rock, from 50’s to present time. A good band, really worthy.

And this post finishes the epic posts about modern rock. According to the great succes of the fist post, I’ll keep to myself any recomendation about modern (The Ettes, Joe Bonamasssa, Howlin’ Rain…) and classic (The Groundhogs, Quicksilver Messenger Service, The Seeds…) rock groups. If you want some more, just ask for it!

Pedazo de banda sonora, como casi siempre en el cine de Jim Jarmusch, la de Flores rotas, película en la que Bill Murray explota una vez más sus excelsas cualidades para poner cara de palo durante ciento y pico minutos, acompañado esta vez de mujeronas tales como Sharon Stone, Jessica Lange, Julie Delpy, Chloe Sevigny o Tilda Swinton. La película es estupenda y no poca culpa la tiene la magnífica música, de la que es buena muestra este There is an end, de The Greenhornes.

Na das kam unerwartet. Bis vor einigen Wochen war nur bekannt, Jack White hat sich wieder mit Brendan Benson und den Greenhornes ins Studio eingeschlossen und werkelt am zweiten Raconteurs Album. Als voraussichtlicher Release-Termin wurde irgendwann 2008 in Aussicht gestellt. Nun am 18. März eine simple Myspace-Bulletin, “Consolers of the Lonely our second studio album will be released March 25th”.

“Consolers of the Lonely” eröffnet mit einem typischen Raconteurs Song, heißt man wirft Brendan Bensons Gitarrenpop und seine Beatlesvernarrtheit zusammen mit dem Bluesrock der White Stripes und einer Prise Led Zeppelin in einen Topf, rührt kräftig und heraus kommen die Raconteurs. Das dass funktioniert bewies ja bereits das Debütalbum “Broken Boy Soldiers”. Wenig überraschend eigentlich auch bei zwei so begnadeten Songwritern. Das Album hält was es verspricht, es stampft, schnaubt, hält bei deutlich von Brendan Benson geprägten Songs auch ein wenig inne und versetzt ins Schwelgen. Das ist vielleicht auch das einzige, was man den Raconteurs vorwerfen kann, man merkt einfach ganz deutlich, welche Songs Brendan geschrieben hat, hier gehts dann in die Beatles Richtung und welche Songs Jack geschrieben hat, hier klingts dann nach den White Stripes. Das ist aber nicht schlimm, da sich alles trotzdem zu einem Gesamtkonstrukt zusammenfügt und nicht zu einer Compilation aus Einzelstücken von Brendan Benson und den White Stripes “verkommt”. Keine deutliche Weiterentwicklung zum Vorgängeralbum aber eine konsequente Weiterführung, will heißen es fügt sich nahtlos in das ein, was man von den Raconteurs kennt und erwartet. Klingt jetzt eventuell etwas negativ, ist es aber nicht, da man dem Album deutlich anmerkt, dass beide Songwriter alles gegeben haben uns ein paar kleine amerikanische Bluesrockgeschichten zu erzählen, die man auch gerne immer wieder hört. # INFO spécial Inrocks : Démissionnaire des Arctic Monkeys après le carton de leur premier album, officiellement par dégoût des tournées incessantes, le bassiste Andy Nicholson reprend du service. Avec l’aide de quelques camarades, notamment le batteur des Monkeys Matt Helders, Drew McConnell des Babyshambles à la guitare ou John McClure de Reverend & the Makers au chant, il a ainsi monté un nouveau groupe nommé MONGREL -la nouvelle petite troupe est actuellement en en cours d’enregistrement.

# L’album des Cajun Dance Party est finalement une pure merveille. On connaissait la plupart des chansons mais le plaisir est toujours là. Je peux maintenant l’affirmer : JE SUIS FAN. Parait-il que la version japonaise de l’album contienne deux bonus : Yesterday, I Lost My Heart et The Parachute. Je les cherche encore…

# Je viens de découvrir quelque chose qui n’intéressera que moi MAIS : Vous souvenez-vous de Holly Golightly dont j’avais proposé le titre My Love Is, et bien cette demoiselle est la 3eme voix de It’s True That We Love One Another dernier titre du MAGNIFIQUE Elephant des White Stripes. J’ignore pourquoi, mais ça me rend joyeuse…

Pourquoi les écouter ?

1. Je l’admets, j’écoute cette chanson en boucle depuis ce matin. Je ne sais toujours pas si c’est parce que c’est les Cajun Dance Party que je trouve ce titre sublime ou c’est tout simplement parce qu’il l’est. Play. Je suis surprise par cette voix, que je n’avais jamais entendu auparavant on se demande vite pourquoi d’ailleurs. Voix sublime, envoutante…Les CDP ont toujours eu l’avantage de me surprendre même après la 100e écoute. D’un coup, le bonhomme (ressemblant relativement à Bob Dylan, d’ailleurs) reprend la main menant la chanson à un rythme à en frôler le Arctic Monkeys moyen. Un torrent de guitares et sons en tous genre s’immiscent et repartent. J’entends nettement “…Colorful Life…”.les deux voix se mêlent sans jamais se toucher ce qui donne un petit air aérien à la chanson. Voilà que c’est déjà terminé. Encore une fois, je ne sais pas si je suis influencée ou si j’aime vraiment cette chanson. Mais qu’importe : The Hill, The View & The Lights est une excellente chanson et les Cajun Dance Party un excellent groupe et j’en resterai là.
2. The Last Shadow Puppets. Je suis en train d’écouter leur album. Ce n’est pas mauvais mais pas excellent non plus. Alex turner chante vraiment, ce qui est perturbant pour moi qui l’aimais pour son rock presque rapé dans les Arctic Monkeys. Aucun doute, il se détache clairement de son ancien groupe, on ne pourra pas lui reprocher. Mais, non. Je n’y arrive pas. Pour revenir à cette reprise, je dirais que c’est un petit bijoux.
3. Cette fois-ci je me remets sérieusement en question. J’ai un peu la sensation d’écouter du Kooks, ce qui n’est pas très positif venant de ma part. Mais le refrain me fait reprendre confiance. C’est beau, surement un peu trop naïf mais sans jamais tomber dans le mielleux. Cette voix un peu adolescent exacerbé, que j’aurais surement haïe dans d’autres circonstances me fais craquer. Peut-être parce que les CDP ont le même age que moi, ou peut-être parce qu’ils sont dans le mouvement buzz sans s’y perdre..non, je ne sais pas pourquoi je les aime. Je sais juste que depuis leur découverte grâce au podcast des Inrocks, je ne peux plus les lâcher.Mais là, je crois que je radote…
4. Howlin’Pelle à l’honneur!!! Pour le coup, ça vaut bien un peu de pub du coté de LA PLAGE pour cette belle découverte. JOUISSIF A MORT
5. J‘ai toujours nourrie une espèce de fascination pour les années 30/40 pour leurs musiques kitch nous donnant des images d’un foyer d’une parfaite petite famille dans une parfaite petite maison…The Puppini Sisters revisite les musiques contemporaine pour justement leur donné ce gout de tarte à la pomme à l’ancienne. J’aurais évité de la mettre dans une playlist si cette reprise de Beyonce n’aurait pas été aussi brillamment remixé. On peut toujours dire que c’est du kitch moi je dirais art-modern un peu façon Wax Tailor…Classe, bien foutue, entrainante, parfaite.
6. Encore un buzz de manquer. Je commence juste à découvrir les Go!Team en tout cas passer la barrière Gripe Like A Vice. A vrai dire, j’ai eu beaucoup de mal à accrocher à l’album dès sa sortie ; ça sonnait trop bruyant pas assez mélodieux et puis finalement on s’y fait et on aime comme il se doit ce très bon groupe.
7. Ce titre de Holly Golightly a été la bande original de Broken Flowers avec Bill Murray. La version original m’a paru légèrement moins bonne bizarrement. Le soutient vocal des Greenhornes donne quelque chose d’assez tripant.Blues, Rock, Jazzy.TRES BON.
8. C‘est tout à fait par hasard que je trouve ce Bside d’un groupe dont je ne soupçonnais même pas l’existence auparavant. Ma foi, c’est plutôt concluant. Je n’ai pas vraiment accrocher ce qu’ils faisaient à la première écoute mais ce titre se démarque vraiment. Juste une chose, écoutez là jusqu’au bout, ça vaut le coup, rien que pour les petits choeurs…mon moment préféré.
9. Je le conçois ça n’apporte rien de très nouveau mais, mince, c’est trop bon…ET CES CHŒURS!
10. Je continue dans les Bsides (j’ai eu tout un arrivage il n’y a pas si longtemps, alors il risque d’y en avoir pas mal prochainement.) avec les regrettés Arctic Monkeys. C’est toujours la même recette donc c’est forcément toujours bon.
