In early 2001 I began seriously considering a series of vampire films. Initially, I wanted to write

In early 2001 I began seriously considering a series of vampire films.

Initially, I wanted to write a spec script based on the 1954 science fiction/horror novel I Am Legend by American author Richard Matheson. I had always been a fan of Charlton Heston, even the slow 1971 The Omega Man, adapted from Matheson’s novel.

Quickly expanding beyond Matheson’s original narrative, I ruminated on the project passively for the nex two years. Then in late September 2003 I saw vampire movie that despite its impeccable direction and surreal cinematography, was crippled by a maundering narrative that reduced the film to a boring mess.

That night I went home and had a fantastic dream: K N I G H T S I L V E R.

Waking, I quickly jotted down the first script in The Knightsilver Trilogy: Knightsilver (“Apostasy“).

Previously, in early 2002, shortly after The Mummy Returns (2002) hit theaters, I contacted a Hollywood producer and began a dialog about several properties I had. This producer expressed great interest in many of my scripts, but eventually proved too unsophisticated to manage my ideas. During one conversation, he actually said “Vampires are tapped out, kid. Nobody cares about vampires anymore.”

Wow, really? Ignoring Buffy the Vampire Slayer franchise and its spinoffs, here are some major properties that involved vampires green-lit during and after his insipid statement:

• Blade 2 (2002)
• Underworld (2003)
• Blade: Trinity (2004)
• Nightwatch (2004)
• Van Helsing (2004)
• BloodRayne (2005)
• Underworld: Evolution (2006)
• Blood Ties (2007)
• BloodRayne II: Deliverance (2007)
• I Am Legend (2007)
• True Blood (2008)
• Twilight (2008)
• Underworld: Rise of the Lycans (2009)
• Twilight: New Moon (2009)

Now, if you expand his stupidity to all undead (ghosts, etc.) you miss out principally on:

• Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)

And by extension:

• The Ring (2002)
• The Grudge (2004)
• The Ring Two (2005)
• The Grudge 2 (2006)
• Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (2006)
• Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (2007)
• The Orphanage (2007)
• The Grudge 3 (2009)
• The Unborn (2009)
• Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011)

and not that anyone would miss it…

• The Mummy 3: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008)
• …And all the flesh eating zombies movies and remakes (ad infinitum)

and need I mention the small-budget indie hit Paranormal Activity?

So, the moral of this story is don’t listen to small-minded people. Find your story, write it, and keep promoting it until someone recognizes it for what it is worth.

My modest Knightsilver has since been retrofitted to skirt the vampire theme and has grown into a robust, imaginative trilogy that so far has no thematic equal.

I so look forward to talking to Jerry Bruckheimer about this one.

In honor of Halloween, the blog posts for this week will be horror-related. Enjoy! I am a big horror

In honor of Halloween, the blog posts for this week will be horror-related. Enjoy!

I am a big horror movie fan. I like all kinds – bad ones, good ones, campy, psychological… I draw the line at some forms of torture porn, but it’s a free-for-all for all the others. Now, some of these may be counterintuitive, especially since they aren’t all part of the “good horror” canon. But although I’m the ideal horror audience (I jump at every screeching violin), there’s a difference between being truly scared or horrified and just jumping at shadows. Some of my favorite horror movies don’t actually have a scene on this list (i.e. The Descent, The Exorcist, Silent Hill, etc.) The following five are images or scenes that continue to haunt me in that delicious way that good horror (even in bad movies) does. They are in no particular order, just as they come to me.

1) The Ring: There is a lot about this movie that I like, and a lot that is downright creepy through the atmosphere created. But it’s only a split second in the movie that I think is the most frightening thing I’ve ever seen. When Rachel and her sister are talking, her sister talks about how she found her daughter (Amber Tamblyn) in the closet and says something about her face. We hear the screeching violins of terror, but it’s what we see with the screeching violins that freaked me out so many times, even when I learned how to brace myself. Amber Tamblyn’s face is distorted, her eyes wide and white, her jaw unhinged, and in that second of freak-out, her head drops forward. It’s a masterpiece of horror editing and make-up.

2) The Sixth Sense: Another movie that is driven more through mood than in-your-face horror. But there’s a scene in it, the first of Cole’s ghosts that we see on screen, that freaks the hell out of me, and still continues to roil my stomach. The ghost is a woman who was abused in life and slit her wrists to escape her husband. She regularly opens the cabinets and drawers in Cole’s house. The way she acts, the screeching violins, the look on Cole’s face and the tangibleness of his fear… I still don’t like watching it.

3) The Grudge 2: I know. It wasn’t a great movie at all, although I watched it just for Sarah Michelle Gellar (dude, what did the hair stylist do to her hair?) and Amber Tamblyn. I still watch it now and again for some background noise. But there’s this one scene in the American family part of the movie in which the daughter goes to see her best friend, who has been affected by the curse. The best friend looks sick and is holding a half-full half-gallon of milk. As the daughter watches, the best friend begins to drink the milk. And she keeps drinking… and drinking… and drinking… until she’s drunk it all. The daughter asks if her friend is all right, but the girl doesn’t answer. Then she heaves and begins vomiting the milk back into the milk jug. And then, as the daughter leaves, she starts drinking it again. Unusual choice, but effective.

4) The Others: It had the unfortunate luck of coming out after The Sixth Sense even though it was made at the same time. Still, I quite love it just for the religious imagery and themes. But there’s this part where the old, blind lady supposedly possesses Anne, so you see this slightly blurry old lady face and an old lady hand when you expect to see Anne’s youthfulness. It’s hard to adequately describe just how damn creepy that is.

5) The Blair Witch Project: It’s hard to make something scary in the daytime. But when Heather finds the gift the Blair Witch left the two of them after Josh disappeared and yelled for them in the night… it’s just a moment of blood, a moment of removed teeth, a split second of an implied tongue… another masterpiece of horror editing. You don’t need any more than that after all the inexplicably creepy stuff that happened before. And the strangest thing is that you don’t really ever see anything. It’s only rated R because of the language. But the movie makes your imagination work to torture yourself. It’s amazing. And horrifying.

And in case you’re curious about what I think the worst horror movie is, the one that I watched once and got rid of as soon as I could? That would be Cabin Fever. There’s nothing I hate more than a movie with excellent production and horrible follow-through. I mean, I understand that the real blood-and-gore horror movies love to come up with creative ways to kill people. But one of the guys dies because a guitar knocks his harmonica down his throat. I’m sorry. That’s just awful. And it had such great potential! Flesh-eating diseases are terrifying! And there was this good scene where one of the girls is shaving her legs in a bath tub, and the razor starts peeling away skin. But the rest was just so… sophomoric that I couldn’t keep it. I just couldn’t. It’s not the rampant gore that gets me – I liked the remakes of Halloween and The Hills Have Eyes, after all, and the Saw movies. It’s the stupidity.

It’s hard to imagine anyone tackling the same material that they’ve already done, much less six time

It’s hard to imagine anyone tackling the same material that they’ve already done, much less six times, and still keep the material fresh and interesting but director Takashi Shimizu has done just that very thing with THE GRUDGE 2, the sixth entry in his ever-expanding JU-ON series of films. I was not a particular fan of his JU-ON 2 (2003), but his new film takes no cues from that film. It is a fresh and original take on the material thanks to screen writer Stephen Susco who returns after adapting Shimizu’s original film into THE GRUDGE back in 2004.

I won’t give any of the plot points and twists (and more twists) and reveals away because then it will take way from the mystery of the film but suffice it to say that this film is an enigma trapped inside an enigma. It follows the format of the original film fairly closely so be warned about the shifts in time and narrative but the film concerns itself with three separate stories happening simultaneously that will eventually collide into one another.

This is definitely NOT a film for the lazy minded in that throughout the film pieces of the puzzle that is the curse of Kayako Saeki (again played by Takako Fuji) and her son Toshio (Ohga Tanaka) and embedded throughout allowing the audience to finally understand what the curse is and the meaning behind a lot of what Kayako does, most notably why she makes the sound that she does prior to killing anyone.

Sarah Michelle Gellar’s presence is sorely missed as newcomer Amber Tamblyn as her sister does not have the presence as an actress yet to replace Gellar. Also, Edison Chen as Eason, a reporter out to get an exclusive about what happened in the house, is far too wooden as a actor playing against Tamblyn who is very adapt at playing a range of extreme emotions. I will say that standouts go to the younger cast members Arielle Kebbel, Sarah Roemer, and Matthew Knight who all do outstanding jobs.

Praise must also go out to Shimizu’s visual effects crew who improve upon the original film’s images of Kayako 110% and to Christopher Young’s amazingly haunting score, which is working over time on this film.

HONG KONG – A FAMOUS Hong Kong entertainer who appears in nude photos that were leaked on the Internet lashed out at movie star Edison Chen, who shot the pictures, for failing to protect the women in the images.

It was the first time actress Cecilia Cheung has spoken out since the photos Chen took of her and seven other local stars performing sex acts with him were widely circulated last year, setting off a scandal that shocked the Chinese-speaking community.

Chen testified on Monday against a Hong Kong computer technician charged with stealing the photos from the actor’s laptop. The 28-year-old, whose credits include Infernal Affairs and The Grudge 2, apologised for the photos and has since stayed out of the public eye.

Last week Chen said he hoped everyone who suffered as result of the scandal would recover emotionally and insisted that their well-being was more important than his.

‘I’ve always said the scandal is my fault. … If lashing out at me will ease her pain, I’m willing to shoulder more,’ he wrote in a statement on Friday, referring to Cheung.

An emotional Cheung said in an interview with Hong Kong’s i-CABLE Entertainment News Channel aired late on Friday that Chen failed to prevent the pictures from being circulated and never apologised to her personally.

‘If you’re sincere about taking responsibility for your mistakes, at the very least you should call us personally to say sorry,’ she said.

‘How dare you say you protected us and hope we will recover?’ said Cheung – whose acting credits include The Promise and One Nite in Mongkok – noting that the photos were still online. — AP

The Grudge 2 Poster

Gestern Abend haben wir den Film “The Grudge 2” angeschaut. Aijaiaiaiai

Ebenfalls in Tokio wohnt Allison (Arielle Kebbel).

Males everywhere, get ready to mourn as actor Channing Tatum (Stop-Loss) has proposed to his girlfriend, the all-around hottie Jenna Dewan (The Grudge 2) at a surprise party in Maui last week. The two met while filming the romantic dance movie Step Up back in 2006. To “celebrate”, here are the trailers for Jenna’s two new films, the drama Shine On, and the teen movie The Jerk Theory, which I’m sure every normal guy can relate to. Both movies are expected to come out sometime this year.

hello~! i just watch The Grudge 2 on youtube and it was definitely a daring try of me. ghost movies have very very very persistent after effect. but i think i should try this show cuz edison is in it~ hehehe and also, i was curious to know how scary can this ju-on sequel be. And so, to prevent any possibility of serious consequences, i watched the show half-heartedly by opening another window by its side and do something else. haha one of the scary part which i’s watched full-heartedly is the pic at the left. pretty scary… but, you noe, when the video screen is so small and volume down to almost 0 decibel… hehehehe it’s still okay lar~

okay okay. now i’m going to sell 2 textbooks here. they were for my science module “Great Ideas in Contemporary Physics” in the past semester. both books are in very good condition and only one book has minimal highlight and underline. 2 books for $15. leave a note at the tagboard if u’re interested. oh btw, the titles are “Cosmology – A Very Short Introduction” and “Introducing Quantum Theory“. And also, the books are meant for beginners and thus, they’re easy to read and understand. suitable for casual reading or to widen your general knowledge~ [click pictures to have a clearer view]

UK Release: 20th October 2006

Director Takashi Shimizu has made a career out of ghost stories. Or to be precise, he’s made a career out of retelling the same ghost story over and over. The Grudge 2 is the sixth reworking of his original Japanese outing — 2000’s direct-to-video Ju-on. It’s also a direct sequel to his recent Hollywood remake starring Sarah Michelle Gellar as an American in Tokyo terrorised by ghosts. Gellar returns briefly here, but is largely supplanted by Amber Tamblyn as her sister, who’s trying to stop the supernatural beings reaching the States.

Those familiar with the series will find little that’s original, as Shimizu shamelessly recycles set pieces from earlier incarnations of the story. Yet his masterful ability to inject even innocuous objects (telephones, wardrobes and shower cubicles) with a foreboding sense of dread delivers some occasional, hair-raising chills.

It looks like the Japanese horror maestro still hasn’t tired of his Grudge series. Having already directed four Japanese versions and sequels and two English-language, Americanised takes in just six years, he has announced yet another Japanese sequel, to be released next year. Ju-on: The Grudge 3 will follow Ju-on: The Grudge 2, Ju-on: The Grudge, Ju-on 2 and the original, video only release Ju-on, and may yet be translated into English as yet another sequel to The Grudge and this week’s The Grudge 2. *Phew…*

Despite her top-notch turn in the modernised Dangerous Liaisons that was Cruel Intentions back in 19

Despite her top-notch turn in the modernised Dangerous Liaisons that was Cruel Intentions back in 1999, and money-making roles in the two live-action Scooby-Doo flicks, Gellar’s career has hardly boomed since her fame-making TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer ended three years ago. Nonetheless, she has been a bit of a workaholic, with four movies already completed or in post-production, and two more in the pipeline.

First up, due out in January, is yet another horror flick, The Return, where Gellar’s nightmares lead her on a quest to solve a 15-year-old murder. She is also set to challenge our gag reflexes in an entirely different way in The Girls’ Guide to Hunting & Fishing, where she’ll play a young woman enters a romance with an older man – played by Alec Baldwin, of all people.

More promising sounds The Air That I Breathe, an experimental drama based on an ancient Chinese proverb, where she will play “Sorrow” alongside Kevin Bacon’s “Love”, Brendan Fraser’s “Pleasure” and Forest Whitacker’s “Happiness”. The one that could really make it for her, however, is Alice. Due for release in America in July next year, Gellar plays a grown-up version of the Alice from Lewis Carrol’s beloved novels, who returns to Wonderland following an emotional breakdown.
