These cat’s name says it all. This group comes to us out of the UK with a unique style for today’s time. Their technique is very soulful and James Brown-esque with numerous horns and light playful guitar licks. All in all this music is fun but also very real. Listening to the lyrics to How You Like Me Now?, off of their album titled The House That Dirt Built, explains the wanting and desire of a troubled individual. A very real feeling if you have ever wanted something, or someone, you just couldn’t have. Give the song a listen and enjoy this new music movement we are in.

Circus!

That’s probably the first thing you think about, when you watch today’s video Sixteen.
The song, made by The Heavy from the U.K., does use a fine circus theme and the video also takes place on an abandoned fun fair.
I especially like the voice of the singer, which seems to have many different layers.

The Heavy made a very good job with this one, but see for yourself.

In the last month, I’ve had opportunities to interview members of four different bands, ranging from the commercially successful (Jack White, currently of The Dead Weather) to the unsigned (The Brothers Comatose), and it’s been interesting to see how artists at different levels treat these interviews.

The most compelling contrast was between the two bands in the middle. Both are rock bands signed under independent labels. Both are rapidly gaining popularity and acclaim and, as such, were invited to South By Southwest last year. Both have spent much of the last year touring internationally. Beyond that, the two groups have very little in common.

First, I spoke with Dan Taylor and Chris Ellul of The Heavy, a British rock band that has an impressive understanding of an array of genres from Chicago Blues to Brooklyn Hip Hop, and this comes across in their music (for more about the band, see my Beat review). Accommodating with logistics and thoughtful in their responses; from a journalist’s perspective, they could not have been easier to interview. I also had the pleasure of chatting with the band after the show, off the record, and from a personal perspective, they were interesting, polite and grounded. They aren’t aspiring to be rock stars; rather, they’re aspiring to make great music.

Two days later, I spoke with Meric Long and Keaton Snyder of The Dodos. Musically, they are quite a fascinating group, employing unique instruments and creating unusual fusions of genres (the drummer has a background in both Metal and African drumming). But to interview them was a bit of a chore. Long set the tone early on when asked about the band’s sound.

“We made a big chart of various popular genres, and we threw darts. And one landed on butt rock, another one landed on gay singer songwriter bullshit…” he mumbled while filing his nails. The interview proceeded in a similar vein and, while I was eventually able to extract a few nuggets of information that fans might care to hear, their instructions for me to “make some shit up,” left me with a sour taste in my mouth. Since fabrication is not my job, you can read what they did have to say about their music on an upcoming entry of Beat.

As I mentioned in Becoming The Enemy, I had a slightly intimidating but efficient interview with Jack White, one of today’s biggest rock stars. While the interview was hard to get and strictly timed, White was present for every one of those 15 minutes. Attentive, thoughtful, pensive and articulate, I got what I wanted and then some. He takes his work and his position as a star seriously and, even if I represent something he doesn’t like, he’s aware of the role of the press and was courteous enough to let me do my job.

These people speak to their fans primarily through music, but they also speak to them through the press. It’s not by accident that someone like Jack White has lasted as long as he has. He is, of course, exceptionally talented. But his work ethic, pragmatism and charm certainly contribute to his sustainability. The latter is, in my eyes, what distinguishes the stars. So, it will be interesting to see, of the two groups in the middle, which one might rise to the top.



With all the electro, techno and dubstep floating about at the moment, spaced-out disco seems to have got lost in the ether. A lot of djs and producers are favouring the heavier and more mechanical sounds those other genres emit, but that’s not to mean there aren’t some great disco-orientated tracks being produced.

Alice Russell’s new video from Pot of Gold doesn’t exactly live up to the perfectly tailored US standards of a music video (and consequently has soul), and V V Brown’s video, on the other hand, looks like it was made for exactly that. I’ve had this funky number rolling ’round my head ever since I heard it on the season finale of ‘Entourage’, so the natural thing to do is to send it out to you guys. The song is a wonderful kiss-on-the-cheek homage to the Godfather of Soul right down to the Detroit horn section, crunchy guitars and Kelvin Swaby’s bloody brilliant raspy soul man vocals. It’s prolly ‘cuz I just saw the new musical, Memphis, on Broadway earlier this week (and trust me…if you can get tickets, get ‘em now, ‘cuz after opening night on October 19th, it’s gonna be sold out for years!) and I’m appreciating the vintage R&B vibe, but this bad-ass, funk-soul wall of sound has me bobbin’ in my chair Big Time!!!

Het concert van Emiliana Torrini in de AB kreeg op Radio 1 niet meteen de beste quotering. “Vlak en te voorspelbaar” was het eindoordeel. Wisten de aanwezigen veel dat er vlakbij nog een ander optreden plaats vond. En voor The Heavy luidde dat eindoordeel toch enigszins anders.Lees hier verder.

In Noid, a tiny hamlet situated to the south west of Bath, some of the most dangerous and ill sounding beats and riffs are being created by four wolf like personalities. The Heavy started out ripping and chopping beats from the likes of Bo Diddley, Little Walter and The Parliaments and fusing them with their now patented brand of high grade dirt. Guitar riffs that intoxicate, bass lines that reverberate around your head like a King Jammy dream and vocals that will challenge any of the genres they decide to take on.

The Heavy continually cross genres as they as a unit are proud to be completely musically schizophrenic. From country to rhythm and blues, garage punk to rock and roll, Studio one to the slums of shaolin, you’ll find that The Heavy are indeed like a pack of chemists with the way that genres get cooked up, blended, stirred and then mixed, to create their own unique style of rock and roll.

The album Great Vengeance and Furious Fire released on Counter Records in late 2007 generated a great deal of interest with songs like That Kind Of Man, Girl, Set Me Free, Coleen and Dignity, firmly laying foundations for the house of dirt that they are building at present. There is no other band that sound as raw as The Sonics while holding soul in a headlock and frequently wrestling rock to the ground with the weight of Mr 808 as tag team partner. Listen, then try and tell Louis different.

You will not experience another band like this ….

So dirty. So much weight. So much energy and laced with a soul that you just don’t hear anymore……..
The Heavy have indeed created a monster.

Mother Mother – Dirty Town
A track and band unbeknownst to me, but beknownst to well-known vacation hound, Alan Truitt. Despite his occasional bursts of obscenity and poetry, Truitt is actually a very well-rounded individual with some electic music tastes.

This track straddles a few stylistic fences, starting out with some glam-ish riffing, before jumping the cow into steel-guitar proto-country, steel guitar and all. The tempo also lurches back and forth in a very enjoyable manner. It’s all about getting the fuck up on out of this one-cow town.

Soulsavers – Ghost of You and Me
Safely ensconced on the wrong side of the tracks with soul brothers Alabama 3, this hard rocking production team fears for your soul, but have no concern for their own. It’s already gone. Featuring Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees) on vocals and some vicious slide guitar and some feedback from a regular old guitar. Lanegan vocalizes as if he’s just snorted Johnny Cash’s ashes and the band rips jagged holes into the air behind him. Awesome live and awesome on wax (or mp3). Tip of the hat (again) to Alan.

Black Ghosts – Any Way You Choose to Give It (Boy 8-Bit Mix)
Producer Boy 8-Bit scatters shards and loops of vintage keyboards and old video game squeltches all over the Black Ghosts’ minor hit. The Ghosts claim their sound is “perverse, personal pop music.” It’s actually much better than that. Solid electro-pop that sticks in your head without completely pandering to your ass.

Clock DVA – 4 Hours
Formed in the early ’80s, Clock DVA are somewhat of an anomaly. Ostensibly an industrial/IDM group, they have also made some forays into soul and post-punk rock. This track has them in post-punk mode, grinding along above some crunchy guitars and a hint of mic feedback. The lyrics deal with something mysterious, an unamed man “wearing a black suit” and “carrying a black case.” Nice, icy paranoia rock for the Monday morning drive into work.

Sounding like Ray Charles fronting the Rapture covering Iggy Pop’s “Lust for Life.” With a horn section. All cocksure swagger, featuring the most kickass drum sound since, well, “Lust for Life.” I owe this selection to Don Mills, whose impeccable musical taste is routinely overlooked, mainly because he keeps telling us to turn it down, goddammit.
