As you will no doubt notice from the festive adornment above, it is now December 1st and therefore time to begin getting into the Christmas spirit! I usually try and hold out until December so as not to overdo the holidays but I have already pretty much finished my Christmas shopping and I may have switched my iPod to festive mode a few days early. I simply can’t help myself. I FUCKING LOVE CHRISTMAS!

The above video, as I mentioned last year, is a newer Christmas song by The Hives and Cyndi Lauper that has quickly become a festive favourite of mine. [A quick sidenote here friends. Festive is my new favourite word and you will find it peppered throughout my speech this festive season, as well as liberally applied to my - now fantastically festive - blog.]

As you can see The Pet Shop Boys are also getting in on the Chrimbo excitement with a festive EP this year. How amazing is this? Well-played Neil and Chris, well-played. I want one.

True or false? Is technology crippling the music industry or is it just changing it for the better? Well, before you go off on a little tirade about this subject, just know that this entry is in favor of the technological advances and the services it has provided within the last five years. I’ll list them really quick just so you understand what I’m talking about. Let’s see we have, iTunes, MySpace, YouTube, Last.FM, Pandora, and most importantly the iPOD!!! If it weren’t for these things then bands and the whole music fans would have no idea how to find each other. Before it was all about the radio and TV but as we can all see, these outlets are unreliable and dare I say biased. I prefer to listen to music that forced its way to get stuck in my head because of some simple beat or a chorus line that takes up most of the song. If I song is going to get in this mind it better be one I enjoy. So thank you great minds who came up with these new and improved ways of spreading new music from unknown artists. Artists that I can enjoy, like the one I’m about to mention. Now I found these guys on YouTube one day and I immediately fell in love with them. They are called Mando Diao. Their band name doesn’t really mean anything in particular. The lead singer says he had a dream and in this dream a man was just walking up to him and just yelled out “Mando Diao!” Strange, right? And oh yeah, this band is from Sweden but don’t let that fool you. They do sing in english and have really great songs. I think they sound like The Hives with a hint of Moudest Mouse. Although, their latest single, Gloria, is reminiscent of sixties garage music, the good kid of course. You know the king of music that everyone said was dead or just out of date but I am here to say you guys, “you are dead wrong.” But listen to them yourselves. They have an array of videos on YouTube that you can flip through. This was a narrow description of their music but as a fellow iPod addict I understand that you are impatient when it comes to new music. But I warn you because they have a lot of song that go all across the board this stuff will last you for a while. And they’re sound will make you wonder why you hadn’t heard from them before. And I have to thank technology for all of this. And you should to, since it’s the same technology that made this blog possible.

I’ve never met a Swede I didn’t like. Seriously, it’s messed up. They’re all so blonde (well most of them), and chill, and funny! In homeroom I sit in between two Swedes and it’s kind of like being in a lovely, confusing, viking sandwich. They jabber on in their strange nordic language while I sit, bewildered but amused, annoyingly interjecting with the few random phrases they’ve tought me.

In any case I love Sweden, and now I have even more reason to love it.

Sweet Serenades is an aptly named duo from the white north, and they’re mega-cool. I got their album for review and I couldn’t stop smiling through the whole thing. When I saw that they were from Sweden, I expected to hear the kind of dirty garage-rock sound that we’ve all enjoyed from Sweden’s premier musical exports ( The Hives & Mando Diao*). It just goes to show that musical racism and stereotypes are plain old wrong. Don’t do it kids! If anything, these guys sound like a mix between the lo-fi nostalgia of Girls and the melodic-rockyness of The Strokes. The album is full of single-worthy tunes, catchy hooks and saucy vocals.

My only problem with this record has really nothing to do with the record itself. Unfortunately it’s only being released in Sweden, Germany, and Benelux (you can order off of Amazon here). Hopefully *crosses fingers* these guys will make the jump over the pond/channel to the UK and US. Untill then all my yanks and limeys out there are going to have to sit tight and enjoy this little taster.

On My Way – Sweet Serenades

*Please don’t shoot/maim me if you’re a hardcore fan and you’re insulted I’ve grouped these two bands together. It was done purely for the purposes of convenience.

Noite de concertos na antiga fábrica DAMM, ou melhor dizendo no cruzamento da fábrica. As ruas foram demasiado pequenas para tanta gente.

Primeiros a tocar foram os Manel, grupo Catalão que é seguramente a banda do momento aqui por estes lados. Conquistam o público com a sua simplicidade e letras que falam do dia-a-dia, de situações que nos acontecem a todos, uns autênticos contadores de histórias. Antes de iniciar o concerto pensei que seria um pouco aborrecido pois não consigo (ainda) entender tudo o que cantam, mas fiquei surpreendido pelo espectáculo que dão e pela cumplicidade contagiante com o público, que sabe todas as letras e as canta em coro. Fica aqui o seu myspace para que os oiçam.

E um vídeo de uma das músicas mais bonitas, e aproveitam para ver as ruas de Barcelona!

Depois vieram os The Hives, banda pela qual esperava pois acreditava seriam uma excelente banda ao vivo e não fiquei desapontado. Confesso que não consegui manter-me junto do palco durante muito tempo, a massa humana era demasiada e já estava cansado de estar como uma sardinha enlatada.

En la agenda musical para el fin de semana destacamos la gira española de The Wave Pictures. Una gira que contará con invitados especiales como The Jackets, en su concierto de Valladolid.

E: Como os avanzábamos ayer, Barcelona se viste de luz, color…y música. Con las Festes de la Mercé llega el Barcelona Acció Musical, o BAM para los amigos. Un festi gratuito que inunda el centro y aledaños de nuestra capital de multitud de propuestas musicales para todos los gustos y colores. Nosotros, fieles a nuestro espíritu siempre petardo, ahora un poco snob, ahora entendido, ahora fanático, os proponemos unas cuantas actuaciones que no pensamos perdernos. Eso sí, no espereis que os recomendemos ni a Billy the Vision & The Dancers (padres de ese horreur que hace bailar cual loca del coño a Lydia Lozano cada vez que suena el politono), o a The Hives (demasiado rock moderniqui para nuestra edad) o a Calima (que nos mola la world music, pero no tanto). Aquí un pequeño planning del BAM 2009 made in music4girls. El resto, at your own risk.

R: BOAT BEAM. En este año que el poder femenino se ha apoderado en gran parte de la escena musical patria (ahí tenemos a Russian Red y a Anni B Sweet partiendo la pana en Los 40, pero también a la maravillosa Linda Mirada a la cabeza de lo mejorcito del año), no podía faltar un supergrupo sólo formado por chicas. Y que conste que Boat Beam no es un “súper” grupo por el hecho de que sus integrantes procedan de otras bandas ya previamente conocidas. No. Antes del lanzamiento de su excelente debut (Puzzle Shapes), estas tres chicas madrileñas eran prácticamente unas desconocidas. Pero canciones arrebatadoras como The Rain Pauly o Falling Over han situado a Josephine, Alisha y Aurora en el panorama del mejor indie nacional. Su actuación en el BAM, el jueves a las 21:00 en la Plaça del Rei, será una ocasión excepcional para ver de cerca su mayor virtud: la capacidad de juntar el mejor pop con su virtuosismo a las cuerdas (guitarra, viola, chelo y piano).

E: PATRICK WOLF. Cuando supimos la confirmación de nuestra admirada Patricia estuvimos a un pelo de dedicarle un OMG en toda regla. Porque lo primero que nos asaltó fue una incertidumbre: ¿¿qué pinta Patrick Wolf en el BAM?? Digamos que no es el tipo de propuesta que se acerque a lo confirmado hasta ahora. Sin embargo, cuanto más lo vemos en la web, más nos gusta y más nos apetece. Ya nos quedamos con ganas de verlo en la gira de The Magic Position, y aunque en esta ocasión no vendrá vestido de Flautista de Hammelin o de Electroduende, nos intriga ver cómo se las apañará para condensar ese pedrusco de aristas puntiagudas y a veces incompresibles que es The Bachelor. No sabemos si tirará por el pop luminoso de su anterior disco, o por la electrónica ondulante de Wind in the wires, ni siquiera si se dignará recuperar algún tema de su peculiar debut Licantrophy, donde dejaba claro que lo suyo era ir a su bola. Eso sí, deseandito estamos de que salga al escenario en plan Gary Numan ganándose la vida en el Parque del Retiro y de que monte un chocho como el que se plantó en Colonia. Es más, nos preguntamos a nosotros mismos, ¿le echarán de Barcelona por gay? Lo averiguaremos el viernes 25 en la Plaça Reial a las 23:00.

R: PONY BRAVO. Si esto acaba pasando desapercibido en nuestro panorama musical es que, sí, definitavemente estamos peor de lo que creíamos. Lo que hacen Pony Bravo no es fácil, no. Pero tampoco es fácil aguantar los rollazos de 10 minutos antes de cada canción que suelta el cantante de Manel… y estos últimos han triunfado como la Coca-Cola. Si entramos en el juego de las definiciones, tocaría hablar de algo tan raro como el weird-western-copla-arabian-pop-rock. Frikismo absoluto, la verdad. Escuchar el debut de la banda, Si bajo de espalda no me da miedo (y otras historias) (disponible para descargar desde su MySpace), sin embargo, es una delicia: uno de esos álbums que te sorprenden con cada canción y no te dan ni un segundo para que te aburras. Dicen que sus directos, en los que se incluyen los fotomontajes del cantante Daniel Alonso, son sorprendentes y surrealistas. Y allí estaremos para comprobarlo el sábado 26 en la Plaça del Rei a las 21:30.

E: SOAP & SKIN. Con la incorporación de Patrick Wolf al cartel de este año, y con la presencia de esta austríaca de profesión pianista y de vocación barroque goth, el BAM 2009 se perfila como el Festival de las Divas multiinstrumentistas y oligofrénicas. Bromas aparte, lo de traer a Soap & Skin es como para darles 12 points a la organización. Soap & Skin es Anja Plaschg, y se plantará el sábado 26 en la Plaza de Rey a la Hora Bruja: las 0:15, con un disco que da miedo de lo auténtico que es… y porque da miedo de verdad. Escuchar Lovetune for Vacuum es como bajar al sótano de la casa de Edgar Allan Poe y ponerte hasta el culo de opio mientras ves a las ratas pasar. A medio camino entre lo macabro y lo hermoso, Soap & Skin se mete lentamente por tus vasos dilatadores y absorbe cualquier rayo de luz que pueda existir en tu cabeza. No es tanto una música opresiva como absorbente, sabe crear atmósferas tétricas y bañarlas de un brillo sutil y melancólico. Presenciar en directo su performance de Thanatos, Fall Folliage o Mr Gaunt pt100 puede ser un momento histórico… o convertirte en estatua de sal. La muchacha tiene canciones que se llaman Marche Funebre, Extinguish Me o Mr Wolf, y sus canciones son tan deprimentes y preciosas como su propio título. Abrazando la estética musical del neoclasicismo, pero con la vista puesta en la modernidad más reciente, Soap & Skin podría ser la vecina de buhardilla de Antony Hegarty o el Reverso Tenebroso de Patrick Wolf.

R: SHANTEL. Y aquí llega el contrapunto divertido a todas las propuestas snobs que solemos haceros (aunque ver si finalmente La Patricia la lía o no también va a ser divertido). Porque lo de Shantel, que viene con el subtítulo de “Planet Paprika Tour ‘09″ DJ Session, va a ser la fiesta. Para quien no conozca a este dj alemán que se llevó el prestigioso BBC World Music Award, sólo decir que sus sesiones son conocidas mundialmente por acabar, literalmente, del revés. ¿La culpable? Su versión fiestera y electrónica del legado balcánico. Vamos: como si Beirut se pusiera de anfetas y se lanzara a hacer música de baile. Su Disko Partizani es un temazo que nunca te cansarías de escuchar… Pero es que en sus sesiones no se limita a poner su música, sino que la enriquece con temas que desafían al sentido del ridículo para obligarte a dejar las vergüenzas en casa y disfrutar sin prejuicios. Su sesión no podía haberse programado en mejor lugar: el viernes 25 a las 24:00 en la Rambla del Raval.

E: DIRTY PROJECTORS. Otro gol por la escuadra del cartel de este año. Nadie podía imaginar que el BAM auspiciara la visita de este colectivo de Brooklyn que está dando muchísimo que hablar con su nuevo disco, Bitte Orca. Experimentación y vanguardia freak se dan la mano en lo que promete ser uno de los albums destacados del año (solo hay que ver las críticas que les están regalando desde los medios especializados). Dirty Projectors estarán en el sábado 26 a las 00:25 en el Parc del Fórum formando parte del escenario MTV Music Week, y su directo no es solo uno de los más esperados del festival, sino una cita imprescindible. Muchos se están volviendo esquizofrénicos decidiendo qué les mola más, si Merriweather Post Pavillion o Bitte Orca. Comparaciones aparte, este disco es mucho menos triposo y más real, más cacharril, más denso y menos accesible. Donde los de Panda Bear apuestan por la electrónica envolvente y expansiva, Dirty Projectors juegan al menos es más, a la instrumentación bizarra y al excentricismo reposado, en un viaje tranquilo por una carretera lisa y abandonada, donde el oyente es un conductor solitario dejado un poco a su suerte. No promete ser la fiesta, pero sí un momento perfecto de introspección y disfrute de una de las propuestas más raras y enigmáticas del festival.

Arriba una nova edició del festival BAM (Barcelona Acció Musical), que entre els propers dies 23 i 26 de setembre es cel·lebrarà a la ciutat de Barcelona sota el marc de les Festes de la Mercè.
Gairebé 60 artistes actuaran als diferents escenaris repartits per la ciutat, i on cal destacar la presència de: The Duke and The King, el nou projecte musical del Felice Brothers, Simone Felice, juntament amb Robert “Chicken” Burke, els quals acaben de debutar amb el notable Nothing Gold Can Stay; els britànics The Go! Team, que desplegaran tot el seu ventall d’estils, en el que segurament serà un dels concerts més enèrgics del festival; el grup de Pennsilvània, Akron/ Family, practicants d’un folk-rock experimental; els suecs The Hives amb el seu rock frenètic i repetitiu; i Billie The Vision & The Dancers, famosos per ser els autors de la “cançoneta de l’estiu”, Summercat, o el que és el mateix la del “Tonight, Tonight…”. Manel, The Unfinished Sympathy i Cat People són els grups de casa més destacats.

Com cada any l’organització ha apostat per la música independent, completant un cartell, que sense arribar al nivell de la passada edició, convida a apropar-se als diferents escenaris per viure uns concerts més que destacables, i com sempre, una bona oportunitat per conèixer noves propostes musicals.

Un Notable alto para el BAM09, en un año en el que la falta de criterio se camufla con recortes por la “situación económica actual“, para las fiestas de Barcelona hay un cartel de los que estresan, esto es, un señor cartel. Algunos de los nombres de esta última y definitiva tirada; Akron/Family, The Go! Team, Ix!, Berri Txarrak, Furgusson, Pony Bravo, Instituo Mexicano del Sonido, y unos que queria repetir del FIB: We Are Standard. Aquí el programa de  fiestas.

Mustard Pimp have crafted 12 hours worth of mixtape! 12 bloody hours! Fucking hell! Its been split into 12 hour long mixes of which some have different themes. The first two contain only new banging electro, the third is pure filthy Mustard Pimp, the fourth is their best of electro 2006-2008, the fifth to seventh is their collection of techno and acid oldschool classics, the eighth to tenth are UK acid techno classics, and the last two are gabber and harcore classics. Basically the best of mental dance for the last 20 years! And we also have two new Mustard Pimp tracks for you! Two from the Hives 2009 ”covers concert” in Australia:

Mit der Single ‘Live Forever’, einem wahren perfekten Song, mischten sie im Herbst 1994 nach 3 Jahren Anlaufzeit die internationale Rockszene auf: Oasis aus England, eine Band, die wie keine andere in ihrer Musik fast alle aufregenden Stile aus mehreren Jahrzehnten Rockhistorie in eine unnachahmliche Mixtur integriert. Griffige Beatles-Harmonien, ruppige Gitarrenklänge á la Stones, sarkastische Kommentare im Stil der Kinks und die lässige Rotzigkeit vieler Punkbands der ersten Stunde verbinden sie zu einem ausgesprochen explosiven Gemisch. Dass es den Rock Am See Veranstaltern gelungen ist, die Briten für die diesjährige Ausgabe des Festivals zu verpflichten, darf als Glücksgriff bezeichnet werden. Denn Oasis sind, wie jeder bestätigen kann, der die Band auf ihrer Hallentour im Frühjahr gesehen hat, in der Form ihres Lebens – was auch die im Herbst letzten Jahres erschiene CD “Dig Out Your Soul” sehr schön dokumentiert. Stücke wie “Shock Of The Lightning” oder “Falling Down” knüpfen nahtlos an die großen Hits der Band aus den 90er Jahren an – und natürlich wird es auch am Samstag in Konstanz eine repräsentative Werkschau über das bisherige Oeuvre der Brüder Gallagher geben.

Im Frühjahr dieses Jahres ist ihr fünftes Album erschienen. Seitdem stürmen die Jungs von Mando Diao von einem Erfolg zum nächsten, in den Charts sind sie bestens vertreten und, ungewöhnliche Gleichzeitigkeit, selbst bei Kritikern sind sie immer noch wohl gelitten.  Mando Diao gibt es seit 1999. Ihr Aufstieg vollzog sich zunächst langsam, aber stetig. Erst viele Auftritte in Clubs, dann wurden die Konzerte größer. Mittlerweile laufen sie regelmäßig im Radio.

The Hives aus Schweden sind bei Rock Am See schon alte Bekannte. Bereits 2005 gastierten sie schon einmal am Bodensee und erfreuten das Publikum mit ihrem erfrischendem, schnörkellosen Garagenpunk. Schlechter sind sie seitdem nicht geworden. Ihr 2007 erschienes “Black And White” Album beinhaltet neben einer Kollektion an Rock ‘ n ‘ Roll Stücken auch eher ungewöhnliche Stücke mit Hip Hop Elementen.

Auf die Briten von Kasabian draf man besonders gespannt sein. Neben ihren bereits über die Grenzen des Vereinigten Königreichs hinaus bekannten exzellenten Live Qualitäten spielt die Band eine höchst eigenwille Melange aus Rock und zeitgemäßen Elektroelementen mit unüberhörbaren psychedelischen Einsprengseln. Ihre 3 bisher erschienen Alben klingen – als ob sich Musik aus den verschiedensten Stilrichtungen zu einer gemeinsamen Jam-Session eingefunden hätten. So interessant wie Kasabian klingt aktuell nichts was von der Insel kommt.

Vielleicht die kommende deutsche Band im Indie-Bereich sind die Kilians. Sehr schrammelig klingt ihr gefälliger, ziemlich an den Strokes orientierter Indie-Rock, und im Vorprogramm von Pete Doherty’s Babyshambles tourten sie auch schon durch die Republik.

Den Auftakt in diesem Jahr machen Sugarplum Fairy aus Schweden. Die Combo der beiden kleinen Brüder von Mando Diao Frontmann Gustaf Norén. Stilistische Ähnlichkeiten mit der Musik des großen Bruders sind nicht von der Hand zu weisen, was für eingängige Gitarrensounds mit Pop-Attitüde spricht.
