Artist: We Are Wolves

Where from: La vieille ville, Montreal.

Sounds like: Indie rock full of fresh synths and dance inducing beats. I really can’t sum it up better than the boys themselves, “music that’s both free and honest, like the celestial lightning on the mystic mountain. It’s a post-punk landscape filled with analogue trees.” (myspace).

Why it’s worth checking out:  The power trio of Alexander Ortiz, Vincent Levesque and Antonin Marquis, have recently delivered their third full-length album Invisible Violence. The album is a follow up to their critically acclaimed Total Magique in 2007. Rich with brash vocals, hard hitting beats and wicked synth work, We Are Wolves has dug out a respectable niche in the Canadian music scene. They’ve performed with the likes of Gossip and The (International) Noise Conspiracy. By blending art and a new wave punk attitude with solid riffs and catchy melodies, We Are Wolves is bound to catch the eyes and ears of many more music fans. Det finns en man som heter Inge Johansson, han är från norra delen av Sverige och spelar i olika band. När jag träffade honom första gången, i våras, skulle han till Grekland med The International Noise Conspiracy, kort därefter fick han sommarturnera med Adiam Dymott.

Nu håller han på med ett nytt, lite mera eget, projekt. Inge Johansson tycker inte att jag ska starta en blogg, det finns ju redan så många, men jag känner för att skriva.

Säga vad man vill om Michael Moores metoder, men han är duktig på att skapa debatt!

Vissa gillar inte alls filmen Capitalism. A love story: “Moore argumenterar så slafsigt och har ett så dåligt grepp om ämnet att han sölar ner hela sig med självmotsägelser”. Jan Söderqvist verkar anse att Moore är humorlös och ett hot mot demokratin. (SvD) Andra tycker att filmen är rolig och ger en nyttig motbild till “den snedvridna och humorlösa vrångbild vi matas med dagligen”. (DN) Själv säger Michael Moore: “Det fina med den amerikanska drömmen är tron på demokrati och rättvisa. Men jag har svårt att se hur demokratin kan fungera när den ekonomiska makten är allt annat än demokratisk.” (DN)

Jag tycker att Micheal Moores filmer brukar vara riktigt roliga och håller med Dennis Lyxzén som i början av den här videon säger att det gäller att ha ett öppet sinne och att om man ska säga något så ska man säga det högt.

Following up the soulful, boogie-rock of their last album Armed Love, The International Noise Conspiracy pick up where they left off with The Cross of My Calling. This time around they are opting for a slightly more psychedelic rock sound on the spacey, retro opening “Intro” which leads into the tighter “The Assassination Of Myself” which sounds like fellow Swedes – The Soundtrack Of Our Lives. But the timeless rock urgency TINC mastered is abundant in the glorious “Dustbins Of History.”

Perhaps the biggest asset the group brings is a freshness and verve to rather older-sounding styles, whether it’s the somewhat funked-up “Hiroshima Mon Amour,” the Stones-light “Satan Made The Deal” or the slow-dance of “Boredom Of Safety.” Striking gold with Rick Rubin again, this band again produces another winner.

Pierwszy dzień, czyli piątek rozpoczęliśmy od amerykańskiego Ignite. Wokalista paradował w koszulce z orłem w koronie, nie szczędząc słów uznania naszej publiczności. Muzycy pokazali, jak się robi show na poziomie, biegając po całej scenie. A ja, wodząc obiektywem za wokalistą, zrobiłem takie zdjęcie…

Zaraz po nich rodzima gwiazda – Happysad. Na scenie raczej sad, kontrast rzucał sie w oczy. No cóż, taka stylistyka… Galerii nie ma, ale jeśli ktoś spragniony większej ilości zdjęć zespołu – zapraszam do posta o juwenaliach na warszawskim stadionie Syrenki, na którym grupa wystąpiła.

Następny koncert to mój faworyt w kategorii: rozczarowanie festiwalu. Panowie z Bad Brains, bo o nich mowa, chyba wypalili za dużo zielonego przed wyjściem na scenę. W każdym razie granie im się ewidentnie nie kleiło. Z naciskiem na wokalizy, czy raczej rozpaczliwe wycie HR. A szkoda, bo to przecież legenda. Spodziewałem się w każdym razie lepszego show, a dostałem kilku starszych panów, którzy to, co najlepsze mają już ewidentnie za sobą. Trochę się zrehabilitowali pod koniec, ale niesmak pozostał…

Wreszcie gwiazda wieczoru, która też zawiodła -  Editors. Po jakis 40 minutach wokalista nagle oświadczył, że traci głos i zespół zszedł ze sceny. Rozumiem, że nie mógł śpiewać, ale: czy reszta muzyków nie mogła trochę pograć, nie wiem – jakiś instrumentalny numer, czy coś? I czy z pozostałej trójki nikt nie umie śpiewać? Kowerów się w garażu nie grało? Słabe to było, ludzie przyjechali specjalnie na ich koncert, a grupa się wypięła… Zdjęcie jeszcze śpiewającego frontmana poniżej.

Po pierwszym kiepskim dniu obiecywaliśmy sobie lepszy drugi. Muzycznie było lepiej, pogodowo niestety gorzej. Po południu spadł deszcz, zrobiło się mokro. Ale Myslovitz, bo od nich zaczęliśmy, stanęli na wysokości zadania i zagrali jak zwykle na poziomie.

Zaraz po nich na scenie zainstalował się dziecięcy chór i grupa Armia. Chór wykonał razem z zespołem “Ukrytą Miłość”, a potem zaczął się czad. Armia jest w znakomitej formie, co muzycy po raz kolejny udowodnili.

New Model Army po Armii? Znakomity pomysł! Nie tylko ze względu na podobieństwo nazw, ale i muzyki. Początek koncertu fotografowaliśmy ze sceny, potem szybko do fosy. Zagrali dynamicznie, z ogniem!

Wreszcie na zakończenie drugiego dnia IAMX. Na scenie ciemno, podobnie jak kilka miesięcy temu w Proximie. Jak zwykle mocno, jak zwykle lekki odjazd. Ciekaw jestem ich show w Stodole.

Trzeciego dnia spokojnie zaczęliśmy jarocińska zabawę od The (International) Noise Conspiracy. Znów mogę napisać to, co w przypadku Ignite – Ci goście wiedzą, jak się robi show. Bardzo mi się podobali, zagrali nie tylko świetnie, ale i świetnie się prezentowali!

Po T(I)NC ze sceny powiało kombatanctwem, ale na poziomie. Zainstalował się bowiem Tomek Lipnicki i jego Tilt. Obok podstawowego składu niemal co piosenkę pojawiali się goście, pamiętający “stare” Jarociny. Szkoda, że po trzech piosenkach musieliśmy wyjść z fosy, bo byłoby co robić.

Wreszcie Kazik Na Żywo – dla wielu festiwalowiczów w zasadzie finał imprezy. Koncert fajny, dobrze że wrócili. Wrzucam dwie foty dwóch liderów:

Ale prawdziwym finałem był występ Animal Collective. Na Nowojorczyków musieliśmy sporo czekać, bowiem na scenie zaprezentowali specjalną scenografię, z wielka kula w centralnym punkcie. Szkoda, że na scenie było ciemno i że w sumie na ich koncertach nie dzieje się za wiele. No i szkoda, że słuchała ich w zasadzie garstka ludzi. Może lepiej by było wrzucić ich między T(I)NC a Tiltem?

Last But Not Least – wielkie dzięki dla Artura i jego rodziny za przemiłą gościnę w Kotlinie!!!

Veckans Fredagsfärger är svart och röd och jag har glömt lägga in någonting om konserten med The International Noise Conspiracy som jag såg i maj. Kortfattat kan man säga att konserten var riktigt bra, men tyvärr var det många som missade den… Det var alltså väldigt lite folk där. Jag har sett bandet live tidigare, och det verkar som att de alltid gör sitt yttersta på scenen. Imponerande att hålla en sådan energnivå genom en hel konsert med så pass liten publik. Guldstjärna för det!

I tisdags när vi var på Liseberg hade jag på mig min svarta och röda bandtröja som jag köpte under konserten. En man jag mötte i parkeringshuset kom fram och var överlycklig över att se mig i tröjan; det var nämligen trummisens pappa visade det sig!

Comin back to the guitar. I think I don´t have to say anything about those legends of modern hardcore music. The 1992 founded Refused from Sweden. Nowadays Dennis Lyxzen plays at the famous The (International) Noise Conspiracy, which last two records really suck. So back to Refused, if you have never listen to them, then you must have this record. Don´t want to say anything more about their first full length recorded, released on Startrack Records.

Som jag skrev i går bojkottade jag skivbojkotten och köpte skivor. Det blev Satyricon “The age of Nero”, The International Noise Conspiracy “The Cross of My Calling” och Kaizers Orchestra “Maskineri”. De två första skivorna finns på Spotify, men vad sjutton! Att ha en riktig skiva i sin hand är en helt annan sak än att ha en låtlista på nätet eller en fil i datorn. Jag har förresten biljett till “Internationals” spelning på Debaser i Malmö i maj, men Satyricon får nog klara sig utan mig…kanske…

If you continue reading through this entry, you will see just how un-punk I actually am. People have said to me, “I wish I was as punk as you.” Fuck, good luck with that. If I’m more punk than you, you probably sit around the house listening to Taylor Swift and The Jonas Brothers (both of which I unashamedly have in my media library).

Please do not yell at me for my awful commentary. It’s hard for me to describe the music when you can just listen to the music and let it explain itself. I hope that’s what you end up doing.

Without further adieu, the best albums of 2008.

10. Beat Union – Disconnected

I had really been anticipating this album. I checked out Beat Union twice when I was in Florida visiting Trish & Co. last January when they toured with Bedouin Soundclash and Westbound Train. Then that tour came back up north and I saw them in Cleveland and Buffalo. I was thoroughly impressed. Saw them again in March. The album came out in April. I had such high hopes for it. Don’t get me wrong, I love the album but I was somewhat disappointed with it, which is why it sits at number 10. Some of the lyrics are quite juvenile. Most of the songs are on the slow side which takes me aback after seeing their live show.

9. Robyn – Robyn

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Robyn. I’ve loved her music for years. Parts of this album are hits but the rest are misses. The chunk that’s good is amazing. To be honest though, when I listen to this album I probably listen to the same 7 songs and skip the other 6. I like the other songs but they’re too slow for my liking, I guess. As an incomplete album, this lands at number 9. If I were able to listen to this without skipping a song, it would be without a doubt in the top 5. Sorry Robyn. Maybe next time.

8. Ani Difranco – Red Letter Year

The best part about Ani Difranco is that homegirl puts out so many albums that she pretty much has an opportunity to land on this list every single year. I’ve been a huge fan since the mid-90s. However, her works from the early 90s are my favorites. As she’s gotten older, her style has gotten slower and her songs are less like riot grrl anthems. There are a few funk grooves on Red Letter Year that get me dancing – very reminiscent of Prince (a mentor and past collaborator of Ani’s). Overall, I’d put this in my top 10 Ani Difranco albums (of what, 20+ releases?). I’d say that’s good placement after a 20 year career.

7. Matt Costa – Unfamiliar Faces

I saw Matt Costa on December 1st, 2007 with Bedouin Soundclash in Toronto. I didn’t think he was anything special. The major turn-off was the amount of blond teenage skanks shrieking as he played. Two in front of me would take a picture of him, look at it and jump up and down while screaming rather shrilly. When Familiar Faces came out I figured I’d give it a shot. Who knows? Maybe I’d scream and jump up and down? Simple guitars and beautiful vocals are what I found. It’s a great album start to finish. I’m getting into his 2005 release Songs We Sing as well.

6. Foxboro Hot Tubs- Stop Drop and Roll

Hearing this non-Green Day yet still Green Day release got me excited to hear the new Green Day release…if that makes any sense. I, for one, fucking HATED American Idiot. HATED IT. HATED IT. HATED IT. Under the impression that this was Billie Joe’s side projected and not actually Green Day in disguise, I was amazed. Still am. Fantastic album.

5. Jackson United – Harmony and Dissidence

I loved the EP they put out while under the moniker of Jackson. They couldn’t obtain copyright of Jackson so they became Jackson United. Western Ballads. It’s not a far stretch to say I was disappointed with that release. It was slow and the only songs I really liked were the ones that were originally on the EP. H&D really brought it home though. Finally solidifying a permanent line-up (members of Foo Fighters, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, Face to Face, Mighty Mighty Bosstones), Jackson United pumped out the jams. For awhile this record was up to be my number 1 of the year. “Damn You” is such a killer song. LOVE IT.

4. Robin Thicke – Something Else

I had been living under a rock for quite sometime when it comes to Robin Thicke. I’d seen him a few times on some celebrity gossip blogs (don’t hate) and finally decided to give him a listen. I fell in love! His voice is amazingly soulful – a good dose of blue-eyed soul. I familiarized myself with some of his older work as well and he is quickly becoming one of my favorite artists. He’s one of the truly talented artists of today. No bells, no whistles, all soul.

3. The Loved Ones – Build And Burn

I love Dave Hause. Even though I lied to him and swindled him out of a free shirt once. As individuals, the members of The Loved Ones are a pleasure to speak with. They always seem engaged in the conversations they’re having with fans. Their lyrics are the same way. All listeners can engage themselves and fully understand and comprehend. I adore Keep Your Heart but I feel that Build And Burn is a gigantic step up and in the right direction. Only 10 songs in length, the album is in my opinion flawless. Ballads, anthems, the bases are covered.

2. The (International) Noise Conspiracy – Cross of My Calling

I’m probably the only person on Earth who enjoyed Armed Love. I was excited to hear what my favorite Swedes would do next. They sound like a 70s jam band and it works. The message has been Marxism and Communism for many years now. But finally I think T(I)NC has let the music be the message. I miss the sound of the keys, without a doubt. I miss the dance bits. But it works.

1. The Fad – Kill Punk Rock Stars

I had the honor to see The Fad once. October 2007. I was being a pretend roadie for SSCP. No, really. It was all quite pretend. I purchased KPRS at the show even though it didn’t have a wide release until February 2008. HOLY FUCKING SHIT. Words cannot even express the brilliance of this album. I’m so sad they broke up in late 2008 but at least I have one great performance and an equally great album to remember.

Todo el mundo, incluido yo, hace estos días recuento, listas, y otras majaderías sobre lo mejor y lo peor del año. Cada loco con su tema. Cine, música, televisión. Lo mío, lo siento, siempre ha sido la música. Y no contento con castigar al mundo con mi hortera e irreflexiva lista de Los Mejores Discos del Año de la semana pasada, me apetece hacer un repaso a mis escuchas de este año, ya que hay discos, y canciones, que no llegan a estar entre los mejores del año pero sí que los escuchas mucho, discos antiguos que descubres por mera curiosidad, o por accidente, o porque algún desaprensivo te los recomienda. Y también están los malos. Que los ha habido. A ver…

1. DIGNOS DE MENCIÓN

Todos estos discos estuvieron en algún momento del 2008 entre mis 10 favoritos. Lamentablemente, las escuchas y mi típica reflexión de fin de año que resulta en la lista definitiva que llevo tres años haciendo (freak) han hecho que tan sólo se queden en una discretita mención honorífica:

Empecemos, cómo no, por el héroe del silencio más controvertido, y también el más famoso: Bunbury ha parido un disco muy rico, sí. A las primeras escuchas muy atractivo, con melodías pop de lo más trabajadas, y las grandilocuentes y (ay) pomposas letras a las que ya nos tiene acostumbrados, sí. Ya expresé mi opinión al respecto de este Hellville de Luxe, con lo que más palabras son innecesarias. Tan sólo añadir que personalmente me quedo con esa maravilla de tema que, sospecho, entrará en futuros recopilatorios, Aquí.

En cuanto al resto, pues hay grupos que acabo de descubrir este año, como The Subways, a quienes pude ver en directo este verano y me gustaron mucho, Portishead (soy así de ignorante… y de joven también) o los australianos The Living End, a cuyo tema How do we Know? no tendría problemas en llamar mi canción favorita del año.

Y los nórdicos Madrugada han hecho un disco, con sus altibajos, pero muy, muy potable. Especialmente el tema Honey Bee.

Los veteranos, bien gracias. Tenemos a los Melvins, que han hecho un discazo impresionante, muy a la altura de sus mejores tiempos, y fieles al honorable título de Abueletes del Grunge que muchos les otorgamos. Elvis Costello SÍ que me ha sorprendido con ese disco que joder no se esperaba tan… así.

2. VIDAS PROLONGADAS

Hay discos cuya vida comercial es superior a un año desde su lanzamiento. Hay otros que salen a finales del año anterior y claro, pues tienen que sobrevivir, porque el mundo no se para (creo) el 31 de diciembre. En mi caso, ésos han sido:

3. DECEPCIONES

Voy a tener la delicadeza de no hacer la lista con lo peor del año, más que nada, porque yo suelo ser bastante benévolo con el trabajo de los demás. Pero es que hay cosas que… no.

The New Game, Mudvayne

Decepción, con todas las letras, del que probablemente era, tras Machine Head, el grupo más prometedor del metal actual. Después de aquel brillante e incombustible Lost and Found, yo personalmente y creo que muchísima gente, esperábamos más. Mucho más. Y ha sido menos. Mucho menos. Además, las opiniones son bastante unánimes en cuanto a que el disco es caquita. Una lástima.

The Cross of my Calling, The (International) Noise Conspiracy

Sí, esto es mucho más subjetivo. Pero mi experiencia con este disco es que en dos ocasiones me ha hecho sentir náuseas. Literalmente. Mala hostia, fatiga, y posteriormente, náuseas. Un mal trago no: dos. Y no me ha vuelto a pasar. No creo que se pueda culpar a mi oido interno ni a mi aparato digestivo, no. Es que el disco es infumable.

4. RESURRECCIONES

Mi disco más escuchado de este año no se lanzó este año. Ni el año pasado. Ni el anterior. Salió en 1994 y se llama Live through This. Según LastFM, 250 scrobllings le separan del primero en la lista publicado este año (el de The Duke Spirit). Pero es que este año tengo un año Courtney.

Mi adicción comenzó con la lectura de la biografía autorizada (por ella) de Kurt Cobain, Heavier than Heaven. Curiosamente, tras un breve periodo de revisión de los discos de Nirvana, me vi mucho más atraido por la fuerza del personaje de la Viuda Negra por excelencia, y decidí ahondar en su discografía. No era la primera vez que lo intentaba, lo reconozco. Pero las veces anteriores había tirado más por su disco en solitario, America’s Sweetheart, y no me había dicho gran cosa. Cuál fue mi asombro al escuchar esa delicia rock que es el segundo disco de Hole.
