O Πειραιώς Σεραφείμ αντιμετωπίζει τους εωσφοροσιωνιστές

Ο Μητροπολίτης Πειραιώς κ. Σεραφείμ (Σεραφείμ Μεντζελόπουλος) είναι από τους πιο δυναμικούς ιεράρχες της Ελληνικής Ορθόδοξης Εκκλησίας και δεν διστάζει να λέει τα πράγματα όπως αυτός τα πιστεύει.

Η μάλλον αρνητική άποψη του για τους ομοφυλόφιλους είναι γνωστή:

“Ηθικά απονευρωμένους, με ψυχοπαθολογικές εκτροπές και ψυχασθένειες, με μανία ικανοποιήσεως της ψυχοπαθολογικής των εκτροπής, που έκαναν αξία ζωής τον σωλήνα αποβολής των περιττωμάτων.”

και μάλιστα μήνυσε τους ομοφυλόφιλους ακτιβιστές που τον επέκριναν για αυτές τις δηλώσεις, (via και via). Προφανώς στηρίζω την προσπάθεια του 10% και φιλικά θα ήθελα να προσθέσω μερικές ακόμη απόψεις του κ.Σεραφείμ που αφορούν εμένα ως έλληνα εβραίο και δείχνουν ότι για τον κ.Σεραφείμ οι έννοιες “εβραίοι” και “σιωνισμός” είναι αλληλένδετες και αποτελούν και οι δύο εχθροί του. 4. Το μέγα δικαστήριο στο Αρχαίο Ισραήλ που έπαψε τον 4^ο αιώνα αναστήθηκε στην Ολλανδία και είναι μια μασονική σούπερ στοά. 5. Οι Εβραίοι προωθούν τον γάμο των ομοφυλοφίλων γιατί προφανώς έχουν σαν στόχο την ελληνική οικογένεια και τους νταβραντισμένους έλληνες άντρες μας, (πρωτοσέλιδο του Ορθόδοξου Τύπου δεξιά).

Τα συγχαρητήρια μου στην Εκκλησία της Ελλάδος που αφήνει τέτοιες δηλώσεις να περνάνε ασχολίαστες – μετά καθόμαστε και ασχολούμαστε με την Καθολική Εκκλησία και τους αντισημίτες επισκόπους της – είναι εμφανές οτι τίποτα δεν έχει αλλάξει και η Εκκλησία της Ελλάδος παραμένει ένας αρνητικός πρωταγωνιστής σε μια περίοδο πολλαπλών αντισημιτικών επεισοδίων όπως είδαμε τον Ιανουάριο φέτος. Υπενθυμίζω οτι ο Πειραιώς Σεραφείμ δεν κατηγόρησε οτι συνωμοτούν κατά της Ελλάδος μόνο γενικά τους εβραίους αλλά και συγκεκριμένα και την ελληνική εβραϊκή κοινότητα, έλληνες πολίτες αυτής της χώρας – λυπάμαι που η Εκκλησία της Ελλάδος δέχεται οτι ο αντισημιτισμός συνάδει τόσο με το πνευματικό μήνυμα της, όσο και τον θεσμικό της ρόλο.

Προφανώς περιορίσθηκα στα πλέον πρόσφατα γεγονότα. Από εκεί και πέρα θα μπορούσαμε να πούμε πολλά όπως πχ για το μνημόσυνο που τέλεσε σε εκδήλωση του think-tank του ΛΑΟΣ και ανέδειξε ο Στόχος αλλά θα ξεφύγουμε. Απλώς να θυμίσω οτι μιας και μόνο οι Ορθόδοξοι ιερείς μισθοδοτούνται από το Κράτος και οι δικοί μου φόροι πληρώνουν το δικό του μηνιάτικο.

Υγ. Είναι κρίμα να πιστεύουμε ότι ο Μητρ.Πειραιώς είναι μόνος του – κορυφαία δήλωση παράνοιας:
Ο Σεβασμιώτατος Μητροπολίτης Ιερισσού, Αγίου Όρους και Αρδαμερίου κ. Νικόδημος, επισήμανε: «Το κείμενο αυτό είναι γνωστό εις τους Θεολόγους ως κείμενο ψευδεπίγραφο. Νομίζω ότι πρόκειται περί συνομωσίας των Σιωνιστών, για να σκανδαλίσουν.

It’s worth the time for someone to actually read his statements so one can see how the words “Zionism” and “Judaism” are used alternatively one with the other or simultaneously– eg. he speaks of the Zionist Monster with sharp claws in Gaza but later on goes to attack the local Jewish community for complotting to bring a New Epoch together with the Masons, (alias for Satanists), differentiating himself from other bishops who are content with spreading an unspecific hatred against the religion of their Lord. for letting these antisemitic outbursts go without the slightest comment – it is fair to say that she remains a negative protagonist in a scene of rising antisemitism as we saw in the antisemitic orgy of December and January this year; it makes the Catholic Church with her share of antisemitic bishops sound quite normal. Ολη αυτή η ιστορία είναι απίστευτη και μια φωτεινή στιγμή ανάμεσα στην ιστορία σφαγών του Ολοκαυτώματος. Ολα όμως ξεκίνησαν από την απόφαση ευφυών και έμπειρων ανθρώπων οτι τα Πρωτόκολλα των Σοφών της Σιών είναι αληθινά. Αυτοί οι άνθρωποι δεν υποκινούνταν από ένα προϋπάρχον φυλετικό μίσος, όπως οι Ευρωπαίοι Χριστιανοί οι οποίοι ήθελαν να πιστέψουν στα Πρωτόκολλα για να δικαιολογήσουν το μίσος τους. Ο αντισημιτισμός δεν ήταν η συλλογική ψύχωση όπως ήταν στον ευρωπαϊκό πολιτισμό και οι εβραίοι ανύπαρκτοι στην Ιαπωνία. Και όμως: οι Ιάπωνες πίστεψαν ακράδαντα στα Πρωτόκολλα και θεώρησαν όχι μόνο οτι οι εβραίοι επιθυμούν να κατακτήσουν τον κόσμο αλλά και οτι όντως έχουν την δυνατότητα. Ένα κείμενο, διάολε, εμφανώς κακογραμμένο και εμφανώς ανόητο, κατάφερε να πείσει οτι οι Εβραίοι είναι μολυσματικοί και θα άπλωναν τα πλοκάμια τους στην Ιαπωνία αν την πλησίαζαν!  Προφανέστατα δεν ήταν οι πρώτοι αλλά στα σίγουρα ήταν η μοναδική φορά που η Παγκόσμια Εβραϊκή Συνωμοσία πάρθηκε στα σοβαρά και θεωρήθηκε οτι οι εβραίοι είναι όντως τόσο πανίσχυροι, άρα ανίκητοι και άρα δεν συμφέρει να τους καταδιώκεις !

Φωτίζει με ιδιαίτερο τρόπο την πραγματική ουσία του ευρωπαϊκού αντισημιτισμού: οι εβραίοι μισούνται και πρέπει να εξολοθρευτούν για αυτό που είναι, το Απόλυτο Κακό – οι όποιες πράξεις τους είναι απλώς αφορμές. Αντίθετα οι Ιάπωνες αδυνατούν να πιστέψουν οτι το μίσος οδηγεί τους Ευρωπαίους να κατασκευάσουν προφάσεις όπως τα Πρωτόκολλα και θεωρούν τους εβραίους εχθρικούς αλλά όχι διαβολικούς, άρα δυνατή η συνύπαρξη μαζί τους ή ακόμα η συμμαχία ! Άλλωστε ακόμα και σήμερα στην Ιαπωνία οι προκαταλήψεις εναντίων των Εβραίων εξακολουθούν να υπάρχουν αλλά παίρνουν την μορφή σεμιναρίων ώστε να μπορέσουν οι Ιάπωνες να μπουν στο “Εβραικό Μυαλό” και να γίνουν το ίδιο διεθνώς επιτυχημένοι όπως οι Εβραίοι. (!)

Πριν κάτσουμε να απορρίψουμε τον όποιο κ.Πλεύρη, κ.Λιακόπουλο, κ.Βελόπουλο, τον Κ.Καρατζαφέρη ή τον Μ.Θεοδωράκη ως γραφικούς ας προβληματιστούμε: δεν πιστεύω οτι είναι ικανοί να πείσουν την πλειοψηφία του ελληνικού πληθυσμού. Ούτε είναι ενδεικτικοί εκπρόσωποι του ελληνικού υποσυνείδητου. Ομως “πουλάνε” και σιγά σιγά καταφέρνουν να γίνουν εισέλθουν στη δημόσια ζωή, αρχικά ως γραφικοί και μετά ως ισότιμοι συνομιλητές. Η απόσταση από τους Ελ και Νεφελίμ του Λιακόπουλου, στο εωσφοροσιωνιστικό Εβραϊκό Λόμπυ για τους γάμους των ομοφυλοφίλων όπως δηλωνει ο Πειραιώς Σεραφείμ, ως τον κ.Γιακουμάτο που χαρακτηρίζει Αρχιερέα του Ιουδαϊσμού τον κ.Σημίτη είναι μηδενική.

Προσωπικά πιστεύω οτι είναι δυνατόν, κάτω από συγκεκριμένες κοινωνικές συνθήκες, να επηρεάσουν ακόμα μεγαλύτερα τμήματα του πληθυσμού. Ας μην ξεχνάμε τις εξωφρενικές απόψεις που ακούστηκαν για τους εβραίους κατά την διάρκεια του θέματος των ταυτοτήτων και έφεραν την Ελλάδα ένα βήμα πριν την θεοκρατία. Αλλωστε στο άρθρο μου για το εβραϊκό Πασοκ έδειξα το πως μια φήμη επιπέδου ΛΑΟΣ και Χρυσής Αυγής, (η ανύπαρκτη εβραϊκή καταγωγή του κ.Σημίτη), έφτασαν να γίνουν μέρος του δημοσίου λόγου και επερώτηση στο Κοινοβούλιο χωρίς καμμία αντίσταση. Σου εγγυώμαι αγαπητέ αναγνώστη οτι αυτή υπήρξε η ανάρτηση μου με την μεγαλύτερη απήχηση στον χώρο των ελληνικών ιστολογίων που προβάλλουν το πως οι ίδιοι οι εβραίοι παραδέχονται οτι το ΠΑΣΟΚ είναι όργανο του Παγκόσμιου Εβραϊσμού !

Ακόμα και τώρα η χρησιμότητα των συνωμοσιολόγων αντισημιτών στην ακροδεξιά ρητορική είναι πολλαπλή αφού χρησιμεύουν για να μεταθέτουν προς τα δεξιά τον “μέσο όρο”. Οπου “μέσος όρος” είναι ο μέσος πολίτης που συνήθως τείνει να τοποθετείται στο μεσαίο χώρο του πολιτικού φάσματος. Ετσι απόψεις που πριν φάνταζαν ακραίες, πλέον γλιτώνουν τον χαρακτηρισμό αφού υπάρχουν άλλες που τις υπερσκελίζουν. Ταυτόχρονα αναγκάζει την υπόλοιπη πολιτική σκηνή να υιοθετήσει παρόμοια ρητορική για να μην χάσει πελατεία – ενδεικτικά τα πιο συνωμοσιόλαγνα κόμματα είναι το ΛΑΟΣ και το ΚΚΕ, με το τελευταίο να έχει κάνει εντυπωσιακή στροφή προς τον εθνικιστικό λόγο. Μέχρι και οι Οικολόγοι αλληλοκατηγορήθηκαν ως πράκτορες του Σόρος !

Ο Α.Ζ. στο ιστολόγιο Τεχνηέντως γράφει για τον Κ.Πλεύρη οτι “… [κανείς] όμως δεν μπορεί αυτή τη στιγμή να επικαλεστεί με πειστικότητα έναν σοβαρό κίνδυνο”. Επαναλαμβάνω οτι συμφωνώ μαζί του αλλά έχω την εντύπωση οτι πεποίθηση του είναι οτι παρανοϊκές απόψεις αδυνατούν διαχρονικά να λειτουργήσουν απειλητικά στην σημερινή κοινωνία – προσωπικά διαφωνώ τόσο με την δυνατότητα εξέλιξης, όσο και με τον κίνδυνο που σήμερα θέτουν. Μπορεί να είναι υπερβολικές αλλα η ευρεία απήχηση τους είναι ενδεικτική οτι βασίζονται σε πραγματικές ψυχώσεις που έχουμε και δεν είναι τόσο απόμακρες. Μόνο που σε αντίθεση με τους Ιάπωνες δεν είμαστε τοσο πρακτικοι ! :Ρ

Αυτή την φορά ασχολήθηκα με τις δυνατότητες που μπορεί να φέρει μια εναλλακτική αντίληψη της πραγματικότητας. Σε επόμενη ανάρτηση θα ασχοληθώ με τους δυνητικούς κινδύνους και πως αυτοί γίνονται πραγματικοί – ενδεικτικά θα ασχοληθούμε με την περίοδο Δεκεμβρίου/Ιανουαρίου αυτού του χρόνου. Ελπίζω να προσφέρει μια στιγμή περίσκεψης την επόμενη φορά που κάποιος θα θελήσει να απορρίψει τυφλά τις “αστείες” θέσεις των Νεφελιμ του Λιακόπουλου ή θεωρήσει τον Κ.Πλεύρη ακίνδυνο μέσα στο παρανοϊκό μίσος του.

Σημειωτέον η ανάρτηση αυτή αφορά μόνο την 5 Ιανουαρίου γιατί πιθανόν να συνέχισε και άλλες μέρες όπως υποθέτω από τα σχόλια εδώ.

Σπάνια έχω την ευκαιρία να έχω μπροστά μου έναν άνθρωπο που θεωρείται προοδευτικός και εναντίον του ρατσισμού, κατά δική του ομολογία, να μιλάει με τόσους ξεκάθαρους όρους για το τι πιστεύει για τους εβραίους. Στο τέλος κάνει μια ευχή ώστε να εκλείψει, με ειρηνικό τρόπο οφείλω να ομολογήσω, η φάρα των ιουδαίων φονιάδων. Tzimis Panousis – Trojan Sound, Jan 5th 2009

This is the transcription of the salient points of the radio show of Jimmy Panousis, a daily broadcast in City 99,5FM, owned by Theodore and Yiannna Angelopoulos, (ie a mainstream radio), which you can hear yourselves here. It concerns only the January 5th show but I presume from other posts that it was not the only one.

It is not often that I have the chance to hear a person which is considered progressive and anti-racist, (by his own proclamation), to talk in such crystal clear terms on what he believes on the Jews. His terms may have been a bit coloured but, damn it!, this is what we like about Panousis, (he has a long history of controversy with the Greek Church and he enjoys a wide popularity over his songs with bold, anarchic lyrics). Jimmy Panousis expressed the feelings of many Greeks, both on the Left and the Right – Christians and Atheists, on what me and all of the Jews really are: loan sharks, passionate on cultural garbage, controlling the show biz, filthy rich and standing on pyramids of money in the banks we control; satanic murderers, a reincarnation of the nazis. In the end he wishes for the breed of hebrew murderers to extinguish, in a peaceful manner I must admit. And for all of this there was no need for Zionism but it has been the timeless historical character of the Jewish people.

Let’s not forget that the slogan of the show: “Jews – Pigs – Murderers” is not an invention of Jimmy Panousis but neonazi Chrissi Avghi and far-Left NAR were the first ones to use it. It is not often that one can find the same harmony of opinions in the Left and Right. Jimmy Panousis unites us all!

The recent presidential campaign of the US has been one of the most followed ones in the past years. In Greece the huge antipathy for George W. Bush has led to an overwhelming support for Barack Obama who is deemed as more friendly to greek interests and the only one able to change drastically US policy.

During this campaign, possibly due to the ignorance which characterizes a significant part of the greek Press, innuendos concerning the Jewish vote and the Jewish (sic) lobby where abundant; whether this being a direct statement that Bush relied on the Jewish lobby or a more subtle one when state television NET noted with meaning that only F.Y.R.O.M. and Israel supported McCain. Their ignorance is evident by the fact that American Jews have, historically, always massively supported Democratic candidates, being self described as liberals. This holds true for Al Gore in 2000 with 79% of the total jewish voters, John Kerry in 2004 with 74% and with Barack Obama for a projected 77%. This has been consistent with all the polls who have for months predicted the traditional huge gap between Republicans and Democrats – not that greek Press would ever care to note.

But yesterdays front page by Avriani newspaper was beyond any limit and was blatant, pure and vile antisemitism:

Avriani newspaper is not a foreigner to antisemitism: back in 1982 it had another front page accusing “Jews behind the forest fires” since the Zionist plot (sic) was to turn Greece to a new Lebanon, (sounds familiar?). Or back in 1985 it accused former Prime Minister K.Mitsotakis wishing to sell state-owned corporations to Jews, ergo agents of foreign interests.

Let’s set something clear: Avriani is not considered a “serious” newspaper and is not highly considered, even though it enjoyed a wide popularity in the 80’s and is currently among the top-10 newspapers in Greece. Also it is not indicative of the totality of greek Press, which despite the frequent innuendos, does not  endorse such extremist words. Many shall argue that what a trash newspaper like Avriani says should not be a major concern and to an extent they are correct. What really troubles me was the whole string of innuendos during this campaign in greek TV and Press that only Avriani was brave or stupid enough to say in clear voice. Maybe other newspapers like top-selling Eleftherotypia would never say it outright, but they have had no problem in the past implying that G.W.Bush was playing ball according the calls of the israeli lobby and that Jews are behind him.

Avriani, in my mind, being faithful to it’s populist tradition simply told it’s readers what they wanted to hear, what they already believed in. Only that it isn’t simply Avriani’s readers who believe in Jewish Domination and US being a puppet state, in the hands of international Judaism; whether it is extreme Right or Left, mainstream political figures or Greek Church Metropolites, US policy appears often to succomb to Jewish desires. Indicative is the extremely popular composer Theodorakis, belonging to the Left, who said that Jews pull the strings of Bush, control the US, the israeli Mossad is responsible for the war in Iraq and many other things that one would expect from a virulent extreme-Right antisemite. Or recently the Metropolite of Piraeus denounced the Jewish Lobby as responsible for pushing for gay rights, (he also considers zionism to be a kind of satanism and thus working to enslave Humanity, so in any case he is not exactly filled with christian love). So I expect raging accusations of censorship by the Jewish/Zionist Lobby over this protest by the American Jewish Comittee, (picked also here and here).

The ease with with these views are uttered, the complete lack of resistance to the spreading of antisemitic libels is what truly bothers me. It is considered common knowledge that Jews exert an extraordinary amount of influence and the jewish religion of someone in a place power is always stressed in meaningful way by all newspapers of every political affiliation, (Protocols of Zion anyone ?).

This is the problem, not Avriani which we can easily dismiss, it is ourselves and our lack of will to push over sterotypes we ourselves endorse as common knowldege and our lack of courage to oppose the promoters of hatred.

Alex Meschisvili was an 11 year old kid from Georgia murdered on February 2006 in the small greek town of Veria. Also the lack of testimonies and any information appears unusual for greek standards, especially given the fact that indeed some must exist since the initial kickoff for solving the case was made by an anonymous tip to a greek TV program dealing with missing persons.

Until now we have a disgusting – unfortunately all too common – case of child criminality. It is also not uncommon for parents to attempt to subtract their children from the consequences of their actions. There are dozens and dozens of cases all around Europe of children killing other children and racist motivations have often surfaced behind these cases. All these suspicions are not a greek peculiarity and racial prejudice entering the police department is all to familiar in the USA. But what is different in Greece was the denial to deal with the actual problem and the denial at all costs to acknowledge that while the crime may not have had racial motives, the indifference after it might indeed had because he was not one of “us”, ie greek.

Everybody is to blame according to the media and public opinion, the society (not pinpointing specific persons – God forbid!), the educational system, capitalism, “social causes”, modernity… Hell even the Jews managed to get involved in a revival of the Blood Libel by Ioannis Fourakis, the spiritual father of all conspiracy theories fanatics like D.Liakopoulos or LAOS parliamentarian K.Velopoulos. (the haste of these people to create confusion and try to introduce conspirationism should serve as an answer to those who still claim that Alex was just another victim of “ordinary” criminality and hate plays no role). Never were discussed the actual responsibilities of the school teachers and of the police, the indifference of the Parent Association and of the city until the matter acquired publicity and how prejudice might have played a role. Still the stance of some courageous persons in the city of Veria must be praised and at least now the city’s institutions have tried to speak up.

I, too, would like to express my solidarity with the mother of Alex and hope that this case shall bring justice and some peace in a destroyed family. I hope it shall also serve to understand that justice is not an abstract idea and individual responsibility is a concept to be taken seriously in our society – especially in the cases where hate is involved and indifferently if it was because Alex was a foreigner, or because simply he was a sensitive kid and an easy target. If not, results such as Alex’s fate after his murder will become more common and next time the victim or the perpetrator might not be a foreigner but your or mine child.

For some time now it has been rumored that Dimosthenis Liakopoulos, a TV salesman specializing in selling apocryphistic books – full of conspiracy theories, “Hellenic Truth” and good ol’anti-jewish hate speech, was close in making the leap from the tenths of small local TV stations where he currently appears to a big national TV channel.

Well it’s now a fact: the man who created a ludicrous parallel mythology where the greek race of the El fights against the zionist Nefelim & contemporaneously warns us of the evil Satan-induced zionism, appears regularly in Antenna TV whose ratings place him first or second place among national tv stations. Information (1, 2 in Cyprous also) says that he’ll manage the 2am-4am zone of the station with complete editorial freedom, but as the picture shows he has already began.

I would like to clear one thing: Antenna TV is not performing anything illegal – it is a private TV station which aims in making money and D.Liakopoulos is completely free in circulating his ideas. But the constitutionally guaranteed freedom of the Press is not the shield which allows the Press to avoid criticism; in this case Antenna TV has every legal right to sell air-time to D.Liakopoulos but also I have every right to consider this decision as hateful and deeply troubling. I do not think that the political views of Antenna have anything to do with the decision and clearly reject the notion that this decision is based on any kind of anti-jewish prejudice. But the fact that Mr.Liakopoulos appears regularly in small national channel Makedonia TV, also owned by Antenna TV, makes me wonder on the limits Antenna TV has or if indeed the owner of Antenna, Mr.Kyriakou – president of the Greek Olympic Committee, is in agreement with views which are chauvinistic…

I wonder: would Antenna TV sell air-time to a Mr.Dimitras denouncing civil rights violations? I sincerely doubt it, given the systematic denial to report on Human and Civil Rights violations in Greece, eg the most important judicial case of last year – the conviction of neo-nazi Mr.Plevris. Then why does he allow D.Liakopoulos to promote nationalism and lies? Is the money this important in allowing him to drag the station in his fantasy world where blatant antisemitism is one of it’s major characteristics?

Whether D.Liakopoulos continues his shows on Antenna TV is not what truly troubles me – it is the growing popularity of the conspiracy theories and the lack of opposition by the civil society. Another tele-evangelist, K.Velopoulos even became a parliamentarian for extreme-right, populistic LAOS party.  Is D.Liakopoulos only a clown that many picture him to be? Is it unlikely that his antisemitic views on the Jews find their way in prime-time national TV in a year or two? While many laugh at Mr.Liakopoulos and make fun of him, and God only knows how ridiculous his views are, he has managed to thrive and he is not that far away from becoming mainstream – one could claim that he is the living example of the deterioration of greek public speech and triumph of conspirationalism. And if you think that I’m exaggerating let me remind you that recently the ruling party’s (Nea Dimokratia) MP Yakumatos accused Prime Minister Simitis of being the “Arch-Priest of Judaism“, while LAOS party-leader Mr.Karatzaferis openly praised inside the Greek Parliament the divinative powers of the notoriously antisemitic book The Protocols of the Elders of Zions – all this without a single person rising to condemn them.

I do not advocate or demand stopping his program because he advances antisemitic views – this would be wrong – but I do believe that democratic citizens should create a moral consensus that hate speech is not wanted in Greece. The media must understand that they are free to promote whichever ideology they want but they shall be judged according to their editorial policy and the message it conveys – in this case I can only deduct that Antenna TV is indifferent to antisemitism and has no problem promoting it. I simply hope that Antenna TV decides to stop transmitting his shows not because they fear negative publicity but because they actually think it over and decide that Mr.Liakopoulos is not in line with their editorial policy and ethics.

The last statements of mr.Karatzaferis trigerred in me the need to write another post on the sinister role of the Jew Simitis and why he wanted the Lisbon Treaty. Given the record of last time when I tried to be sarcastic, (and how the whole far-right greek blogosphere exploded by my revelations on PASOK being a jewish party), I decided to let go. So for this time I simply dedicate to you the latest piece of oratory of the president of LAOS mr.Karatzaferis who has faced criticism on his views often deemed antisemitic and extreme-right.

Mr.Karatzaferis makes his official speech in the Greek Parliament and comments on the new Treaty of Lisbon, governing the functioning of the European Union. His party, LAOS, refuses to ratify calling it “The greatest deceit against the peoples of Europe“. He ends his passionate speech by addressing the New Order, (this was the way LAOS Press Office entitled this part of his speech).

I must admit that the recent political upheaval in the greek socialist party, PASOK, has disturbed me deeply. Former prime-minister K.Simitis faces the current leader of PASOK Y.Papandreou in a power struggle that is harmful to our great Jewish political party. Both are great Jews who have worked hard for the demise of our arch-enemies, the proud heirs of the El, the Greeks and it is difficult to take sides. In any case the bloody antisemites should see that the rumors that, us jews, stick together are false and we too indulge in civil wars unfortunately.

Here are some excerpts that talk about the jewish origins of these politicians. They come from sites, blogs and newspapers where journalists and the common people of Greece get to express themselves and discuss freely on the great Jewish leaders of PASOK.

For example we get to know about the famous jewish grandpa of K.Simitis who’s name is Avraham Avouris or Mordochaios Avouris. Mr.Simitis faked to be offended when people talked about his jewness and he stated that said his surname derived from a turkish word. Also Y.Papandreou is of jewish origins and suspected masson; his father and founder of PASOK Andreas Papandreou was a known philosemite due to his jewish origins and total adherence to zionism – his major sponsor was a jewish bank. We should not forget the contender Evangelos Venizelos, who’s surname derives from his grandfather Ben Zelon. Thankfully in that case we managed to circulate the rumor that his surname was “Turkoglou” and thus saving him. Even former contender Y.Arsenis has a jewish mother from Cephalonia. These great people follow the footsteps of the known benefactor of Judaism, Eleftherios Venizelos, whose gradfather was Benny Selon from Salonica.

We have the turks believing that moving Jews to Thessaloniki in 1492 was the work of Western Powers to destabilize the Ottoman Empire.

Then we have Greeks believing that Jews from Thessaloniki were moved after 1453 in order to de-hellenize Constantinople/Istambul and act against greeks.

If Jews worked against the Turks, as suggested by our arab historian, then why would the Ottomans move them directly to their capital ? Lakis Lazopoulos is a famous greek comedian with a long history of successful TV shows. Nowadays he’s responsible for the stand-up show of “Al Tsadiri News” where he satirizes the (some) politicians, the greek star system and various international events. Sometimes makes some good points but usually he slides towards populism, narcissism and nationalism that is majoritarian in the Greek Left, (I don’t even mention the Right as I feel that they’re ex officio nationalists in Greece). Still he enjoys a wide support from greek audience and his show is consistently the most successful one in greek TV.

In his latest show he recited the excerpt above and attributed it to Henry Kissinger, former chief of the US State Department. This invented excerpt, known as “The Kissinger Statement”, holds a special place in the heart of greek nationalists and devotees to conspiracy theories. It serves as a sign of US evilness and jewish/ zionist’s etternal effort to hurt Greece, (as Kissinger is of jewish origins). These people are neither a small, nor are a marginal minority and the range of people who endorse the statement above as authentic is impressive: from the prominent Greek Communist Party parliamentary L.Kanelli, to other PM’s like S.Papathemelis, to the former Greek President of Republic C.Sartzetakis ! There have been a couple of articles stating the inauthenticity of the speech and H.Kissinger office has denied it; even the US Embassy has protested since some claimed that it was a non-paper deriving the Clinton/ Simitis talks in 1997. Still these articles have been widely ignored and scores of newspapers have reprinted it, hundreds of articles mention it and it often appears during TV shows and on the internet.

For those interested there is an excellent article by Ios, (here) which recounts the various aspects of this story when it re-surfaced in 1997. I’ll limit myself in mentioning that each time the statement appears to have been made at different dates, on different media and nobody has ever proved that the aforementioned statement did ever actually appear on any media; unarguable an invented story. I.Pretenderis in an article gives his interpretation of the obsession of the Greek Right and Left with the conspiracy theories and in particular the Kissinger Statement. I quote some interesting passages from his article that can be found here, since I agree with many of his conclusions:

Why so many good people in Greece feel that they live in a state of generalised and unsubstantiated conspiracy against their national identity? (…)
The react because the school of thought they express cannot exist without fear, without threat, without the unacknowledged admission of an ongoing conspiracy; a conspiracy that justifies the inward and defensive stance they hold. They defend themselves because somebody threatens them, threatens them insidiously, conspiratorially and without pause. (…)
Maybe for this the various conspiracy theories are mobilitated: not only as a threat towards all but also as an interpretation mechanism of a change that some cannot comprehend and thus accept.

I should also add that greek writer Dimitris Sarantakos has claimed that the Kissinger Statement is only an adaptation of Lord Palmerston’s speech regarding the Pacifico Incident in 1850. For the sake of honesty I must admit that the only speech I now of who was his Civis Romanus Sum speech where his makes no similar statements. Still as others have pointed out it would be blatantly foolish of H.Kissinger to have a secret plan against Greece and then go on and declare it to the delight of the whole world. In any case I rely the logic of the reader as not to have to prove how blatant or stupid this lie is; plus I remind again that no media that are reputed to have published it ever actually did.

Normally I wouldn’t have dealt with conspiracy theories which seem to flourish under the greek sun but having them repeated in the most successful show of greek TV is kind of disturbing. This rumor, as I said, is replayed each time one wishes to either show how US hates Greece, or the international Judaism through prominent Jews aims to destroy Greece. It’s interesting to see how a Left-oriented public figure as Lazopoulos slides towards nationalism and adopts an anti-american/ anti-jewish rhetoric which would find eager supporters among the voters of the extreme-right and racist party of LAOS. For me it’s only yet another sign of the red/black informal alliance which dominates the cultural landscape of Greece and has yet to find a worthy adversary.

This lack of contradiction to the endemic populism/ nationalism is what I find unacceptable. Lazopoulos can say pigs fly and ask us to believe him. What I cannot understand is how various reporters and politicians have no trouble spending litres of ink, (or keystrokes), to comment on one or another aspect of his show but fail to comment on the nationalism which is characteristic in his shows as the Theodorakis Letter nationalistic delirium proves, (blog post by j95). I mention journalists and politicians but of course this failure also holds true for the greek society, that feeds on these conspiracy theories where americans and jews are the unchallenged protagonists. It would not be untrue to ask oneself if this unopposed propagation of stupidity is responsible for making the blatantly racist views of LAOS becoming mainstream, for the public reward of anachronistic politicians in al political parties and allowing persons like Liakopoulos to become household names. Stupidity is not innocent and I agree that goes hand in hand with it’s partners: fear, ignorance and habit; it should not go unchallenged unless we want one day to be swallowed by it.

May the virtuous El of Liakopoulos protect us and help us ward off further insults to our good sense and save us from Saviours who think that they know more…

What really gets me sometimes is the fact that I cannot open the TV without having to endure some idiocy on jews, despite our infinitesimally small number in Greece. A good example is a recent symposium on the fate of the moslim population of albanian descent that lived in the area of north-west Greece, called Chams/Çamë.

To put it in few words this population faced persecution during WW2 which resulted in the expulsion of the whole community, roughly 15.000 -20.000 refugees. Many argue that this was a direct result of their collaboration with the invading fascist Italy and I tend to agree that it didn’t help out though this is not an excuse to massively punish the people who didn’t take part; personally I find it completely unacceptable. I won’t even mention that cold-blood murder of anyone is evil in any case and cannot be justified whatever one may offer as a pretext! Plus as somebody wisely put it: in that case the greeks of Asia Minor were justly evicted by Turkey in 1923 since they too were collaborators with an invading force.

Anyway to cut things short I was seeing the news at AlphaTV when I saw the reportage on the symposium, which was interrupted by “patriotic” partecipants, which many suspect to be members of the far-right party of LAOS. These vigorously denied any wrongdoing of Greece. Between the shouts and accusations a “patriot” proudly shouted:

“Cham, Czech, Tsifut – Telos!” alluding that the Chams, the Czechs and the Jews are the worst people on the world.

First of all the correct proverb, as far as I know is “çam çoban çifut” which appears to be more correct and is translated as “chams, shepherds and jews”.

Afterwards people complain that Jews know only to whine/ complain and that nobody really deals with them. Then how come in this matter, where Jews have absolutely nothing to do with this people, they have to be mentioned as the arch-villains to whom the Chams are compared with? Why does every single time that the word “jew” comes up in the TV, this must be in a negative environment? There are always exceptions, like the recent show on the Jews of Ioannina I posted about, but these exceptions are so few as to be recalled one by one in the last 15 years that independent TV exists in Greece.

This latest example of chauvinism prompted a great post on the symposium by touki8eblom which I invite you to read, (also IOS wrote about it). Plus thanks to SPY we have the video, (the phrase can be heard round the 2nd minute). Strangely enough it brought up the fate of the greek jews of those area, (most notably those of Ioannina and Trikala), which perished almost totally during the Holocaust/ Shoah. It seems that both Chams and greek right-wing partisan group EDES supported the annihilation of the jews of their region; exception is being made for the predominant left-wing EAM/ELLAS partisans. Chams are responsible to the degree that some of them created a fascist militia which aided initially the italians/ germans and actively aided the roundup of the jews, (the source is Mazower’s book “Inside Hitler’s Greece”). EDES is responsible because it did not object the expulsion of greek citizens but actually “hailed” (sic) the german operations, (source A.Christinidis via GHM).

I would be ungrateful if I didn’t admit that through this site I’ve had the chance to be wonderfully surprised by many people who seem to have the sheer recklessness to go against the mainstream views here in Greece. One of these people is touki8eblom, affectionately known as touki.

On this particular occasion the article that grasped my attention was a small but well documented essay on the widely spread myth that jews, (or Mossad, the israeli Secret Service), were responsible for 9/11. The rumor has it that 2-3-4-5.000 jews working in the World Trade Center were “alerted” and failed to show up that day for work; ergo jews knew about it or even organised it. This rumor began by a couple of  arab newspapers, was propagated by Al-Mannar which is Hezbollah’s TV station and picked up eventually by a couple of israeli newspapers as “evidence” of arab hysteria.

Until this moment we do not have anything really spectacular, just another story of propaganda that ends up backfiring on it’s authors. But here is where the fun begins… The leader of the racist LAOS party Y.Karatzaferis asks the greek Foreign Affairs Minister if he’s aware of the fact and asks that he should “inform his european counterparts”. Ok, maybe he got delirious, maybehe was just serving the needs of his racist clientele. The problem is that nobody seems to object to the question while at the same time the “discovery” of the presumably missing jews appears on many mainstream newspapers and many panelists in TV don’t hesitate to express it. We shouldn’t fail to note that many public figures like MP’s from Nea Dimokratia Chaitidis or Communist Party’s Chourmouziadis didn’t hesitate to adopt these views.

So it wasn’t really strange that various polls showed that an important slice of greeks believe in the jewish finger with percentages varying from 7% to 40% !

Anyway enjoy his post in greek which rebukes this myth with facts; a myth which I believe will become an all-favourite of mr.Karatzaferis similes! At the same time take a look in IosPress reportage on the matter which concentrates mainly in the course of the myth in the greek media.

Books questioning the Shoah or downright racist are free to circulate and enjoy a high popularity even in mainstream bookshops. This includes books that are proven literary forgeries like the infamous “The Protocols of the Elders of Zion” that do not only circulate freely but are fiercely defended by the totality of the greek publishers and society.

So when well known nazi-admirer and TV figure Mr.Plevris published a book called “Jews, the whole truth” where he openly expressed his admiration for Hitler there was no shock. But what really distinguished him was not only his questioning of the Shoah but his open support for the extermination of the jews which, as far as he was concerned, it should have been more effective. Or else to put it in his own words:
“unfortunately the Nazis chose to move the Jews away from Europe, when in my opinion, they should have killed them, because this is the behavior towards those who desire world domination.”

P. 742: ‘That’s what Jews want. It’s the only thing they understand: an execution squad within 24 hours’
P. 269: ‘Every Greek, every person who is aware of the subversion carried out by Jewish Zionism, should act on his own as an individual and mobilize himself against Jews. Initially he needs to do the following:…
…Wherever intervention by Jews is noted he should foil it by denouncing it and then take whatever action is necessary.
P. 778: ‘The only way Jews can find salvation is for them to stop dreaming of ruling the world… Otherwise their annihilation will be complete and for all. At most a few thousand will remain and they will snip their little willies and wait for their Jehovah’.
P. 852: ‘Hitler was blamed for something that did not actually take place. Later the history of humanity will blame him for not ridding Europe of the Jews, though he could have… My dear Jews, I do not ask you to suffer all the things that your holy books tell you that we should suffer from you… You are criminals because that is what your religion has taught you to be. You are murderers because crime is instilled in you from an early age. Therefore we others have the right to deal with you. And that is what we will do’.

Phrases like this forced a group of greek christians and greek jews to file a complaint against him for advocating racist violence. A law suit which was accepted as legitimate by an Athens Appeals Judicial Council because “The appellant’s argument that his writings are an expression of opinion is unfounded because in fact he is inciting the readership, especially the Greek one, to mobilize against Jews (that is to hate, discriminate against, or use violence against them), whom the appellant characterizes indiscriminately as subhuman, deserving extinction, enemies of the Greek people and of Europe in general, praising at the same time the Nazis and SS’s criminal actions against the Jews.”

One thing that Greek Jewry and the Human Rights Organizations did not certainly expect was how the trial turned into a true farce. A court openly anti-jewish which was not only sympathetic to the defendant but downright hostile towards the witnesses for the prosecution. A court which rejected all greek jewish witnesses as not having legal interest in the case, as if it concerned some uncertain entity and not people in blood and flesh! A court who’s Prosecutor was so favorable to Plevris that he arrived to declare as “scientific work” his book! Even when this scandal came to light through a newspaper article, a complete silence roared deafeningly since no political party, public figure or academic rose to protest agaist the state of the Greek Justice.

What follows is the english translation of the bulletin by the Greek Helsinki Monitor, a greek NGO for human rights, which was actively involved in the law suit. Among else it includes selected excerpts from the trial which document the prejudice of the judges who arrived to defend themselves the defendant instead of letting his lawyers!

It is noteworthy, though it hardly appears surprising, the fact that the populist, antisemitic party of LAOS appeared closely linked to this book. LAOS deputy Adonis Georgiadis openly praised the book in various TV shows while the son of Plevris was also elected as a deputy for the LAOS party, though later LAOS tried to disassociate itself from the “dangerous” Plevris. The Greek Helsinki Monitor (GHM), on the occasion of tomorrow’s International Day Against Fascism and Anti-Semitism in commemoration of Kristallnacht (9 November 1938), notes “the unprecedented for Greek justice anti-Jewish climate that prevailed in the [11 September 2007] trial of the self-proclaimed anti-Semite Kostas Plevris, author of the racist book ‘The Jews: The whole Truth’ (1,400 pages), mainly because of the attitude of the prosecutor, who did not think twice before calling the neo-Nazi book ‘scholarly work.’ In the anti-Jewish climate prevailing at the trial, there was an indirect contribution of the presiding judge of the court, who was apologetic towards the defendant for the delay in the trial procedure and in consequence in the issuing of the verdict! The prosecutor was also disdainful towards the first prosecution witness [Anna Stai, President of the Anti-Nazi Initiative], whose arguments he tried to refute himself rather than letting the defendant’s lawyers do that!”

These are comments of the President of the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece (KIS) Moses Konstantinis, in the September 2007 issue of the KIS newsletter “Ta Nea mas” (“Our news”), translated in English by GHM. GHM appends characteristic excerpts from that trial, which document the comments of the KIS President. It is reminded that defendants Kostas Plevris and “Eleftheros Kosmos” (a neo-Nazi weekly) were referred to trial on the basis of the indictment by Deputy Athens Appeals Prosecutor Spyridon Mouzakitis (available at the webpage http://cm.greekhelsinki.gr/index.php?sec=194&cid=3176), confirmed by an Athens Appeals Judicial Council, when it rejected (decision 1817/2007) K. Plevris’ appeal against the indictment: “The appellant’s argument that his writings are an expression of opinion is unfounded because in fact he is inciting the readership, especially the Greek one, to mobilize against Jews (that is to hate, discriminate against, or use violence against them), whom the appellant characterizes indiscriminately as subhuman, deserving extinction, enemies of the Greek people and of Europe in general, praising at the same time the Nazis and SS’s criminal actions against the Jews.”

GHM notes that, even after the publication of documented articles about what was said in that trial, on 12 September 2007, in the large circulation dailies “Ta Nea” (“Racism is ‘scholarly work!’ Uproar with the prosecutor’s attitude towards K. Plevris’ book on the Jews” at http://www.tanea.gr/article.aspx?d=20070912&nid=5962628) and “Eleftherotypia” (“Plevris on the carpet” at http://www.enet.gr/online/online_print?id=42961328), there was not a single institution –political, scholarly, legal, journalistic, human rights, or other- that even whispered a condemnation of the anti-Jewish attitude of these judicial officials.

It was thus proved once again that tolerance of anti-Semitism (and of other forms of racism) is widespread in Greece. It was also proved that the various “anti-racist activists” act only within “limits.” These limits almost always do not include fighting racism against the Jews (and against ethnic and national minorities). This is why, within the EU, Greece and Greek society enjoys indeed a unique position (of discord)…

Prosecutor Leonidas Lazarakos:

There is Plevris, there are also A, B, C, X, Y, Z, who have opposing opinions, sister! And they want to express them. So, will we reach the level of those ludicrous decisions taken in foreign courts to accuse and condemn historians, who have denied the Holocaust? They deny it! That’s their right! So, let the others, the historians come out and say “gentlemen you are wrong. You are frauds of science. What you say isn’t true. And that the Holocaust did happen for this, that or the other reason. Here is the evidence. Here are our sources. Mr. Plevris cites a bibliography. He has quoted from bibliography. By this I mean to conclude that his work is of a scholarly nature. The entire spirit of your testimony, which concerns me, is that you deny the scholarly nature of his work. (…)

Prosecutor: We have said many times that democracy is a very good political system but it has an inherent weakness. It permits everyone to express his opinions. Therefore, the fascist and the national socialist also have the right to express their opinions. Right? (…)

Prosecutor: Whether Hitler did good or evil, global humanity, global humanity has said he did evil. Mr. Plevris has the right to say that he did good. Why should we deprive him of that? (…)

Prosecutor: The Jews…the Jews, has anyone condemned them and persecuted them for their ideas? If Hitler did do that, everyone has condemned him. As global humanity. When Jews say “we are the chosen people on earth” has anyone filed a complaint against them? (…)

Prosecutor: These two things emerge as conclusions. Because you are not evaluating his work in a scholarly manner. This is what concerns us here. Plevris is a scholar! Whether we like Plevris as a scholar… this is a question of criticism, it’s not a question of tossing him in the dungeon. (…)

Prosecutor: But [Plevris’ book] is a scholarly manual. (…)

Prosecutor: Do you, as an anti-Nazi, have the right to write a book against the Nazis?

Witness Anna Stai (President of the “Anti-Nazi Initiative”): I have an obligation to write a book against the Nazis.

Prosecutor: Fine. Fine. In your opinion, you have an obligation. And Plevris, in his opinion, has the obligation to write what he wants. Now, would you want a Nazi court to try you and convict you? Or a Nazi state? (…)

Prosecutor: Look here madam. Let me explain something to you: The court is tolerating you. I, myself, cannot tolerate you! If you continue in this fashion I will order your arrest and detention! (…)

Presiding Judge of the Three-Member Appeals Court Efrosyni Tselehovitou: Well, let me tell you something. In your effort here to support your positions, you or others, I don’t know who, try not to be picturesque. Is it an expression “Hitler is his boss”? “Which Hitler”? Is there a Hitler so you can call him “boss”? (…)

Presiding Judge: No madam! The books are not on trial!

Stai: Those “ideas” are on trial…

Presiding Judge: Nor are ideas on trial! (…)

Presiding Judge: Madam, let me ask you something. This is irrelevant to these proceedings. Is the need such here that you have to have an anti-Nazi organization? (…)

Kostas Plevris: Yes. And a question. Do you approve that [the Jews] gave an image to the Ministry of Culture, this one here [approaches Stai and shows her an illustration in his book] with Christ deformed (…) what page is it, what page is it?

Prosecutor: Which page is that on? Which page?

Kostas Plevris: page 194. Look here! The Jews gave it! The Jews gave a painting…

Presiding Judge: Don’t give me a speech. Ask a question.

Kostas Plevris: Did you know that the Jews gave a painting to the Ministry of Culture, which depicts a Jewish penis with a circumcision ejaculating on the Cross? I have it in here. Do you want to see it? Do you approve of that?

Prosecutor: Which page did you say that was on?

Kostas Plevris: The Jews gave it [to them] and got 175 million. Here you are, Mr. Prosecutor! Here it is!

Prosecutor: 194? Tell me what page! I’ll find it, I’ll find it.

Kostas Plevris: And did [Archbishop] Christodoulos protest? And didn’t they insult him?

Prosecutor: Well!…What would they have done? Wouldn’t they have insulted him?

GHM note: The painting in question “Asperges Me”, by Belgian (non-Jewish) artist Thierry de Cordier, was exhibited in the International Art Exhibition OUTLOOK, an event of the Cultural Olympiad (an initiative of the Ministry of Culture) for the Olympic Games of Athens 2004, curated by Christos Joachimides (also non-Jewish). Six weeks into the exhibition, a supporter of the extreme right LAOS party happened to see the painting and informed George Karatzaferis, the party leader, who in turn demanded the painting be removed from the exhibition. Former conservative party New Democracy leader Miltiadis Evert also asked for the removal. Minister of Culture Evangelos Venizelos and the board of the Cultural Olympiad asked that the painting be taken down. Exhibition curator Christos M. Joachimides complied with the request and removed the work on 10 December 2003. The story is actually mentioned in page 157 of the first edition of the book

Presiding Judge: Can you tell me, can this book…

Irene Koutelou (Member of the Anti-Nazi Initiative): About violence. Let me tell you something about violence. You can also “rid” your life of the Jew by burning him, say. You can bust up his shop, like what happened on Kristallnacht under Hitler.

Koutelou: We aren’t drawing the parallels. It’s not us who are doing that.

Prosecutor: Because he’s a little heated in his writing?

Koutelou: You can’t be “a little heated” in your writing when you say that “unfortunately the Nazis chose to move the Jews away from Europe, when in my opinion, they should have killed them, because this is the behavior towards those who desire world domination.” This, in my opinion, is not being “heated”. Just as you are not being “heated” when you say that supposedly they went to the ovens and supposedly then went to the gas chambers…

Prosecutor: Why not? He is questioning these events! Isn’t that his right?

Koutelou: It is not his right to question these events…

Prosecutor: Why not?? Why not???

Koutelou: Because the Holocaust is recognized by all of humanity and of the basis of this recognition of the Holocaust…

Prosecutor: Madam, one moment! One moment! Here we have a misunderstanding.

Koutelou: … by the Greek state, this law was enacted on the basis of which [Plevris] is being tried.

Prosecutor: The law against racial discrimination was enacted for the Jews and their Holocaust??? Are you speaking seriously????

Koutelou: Certainly. Yes, yes. It was enacted on the basis of the Convention…

Prosecutor: Are you speaking seriously???

Koutelou: Certainly.

Prosecutor: Are you speaking seriously????

Koutelou: It was one of the reasons why it was enacted.

Prosecutor: What are you talking about madam??? What are you talking about???

Koutelou: Certainly! Certainly! (…)

Prosecutor: Why? Was there any danger? What I want to make you understand is that there was no danger to Jews in Greece, and for this reason it was not possible for this law to have been enacted for the Jews and the Holocaust.

Koutelou: But there was…

Prosecutor: In 1979 everyone was unsuspecting about the Holocaust. Now, in the past 2 years, there have been some…things in Europe and, in France and Germany, there have been some court convictions, on the basis of some laws of questionable constitutionality. And there have been…

Koutelou: So it doesn’t happen again [meaning the Holocaust]. So it doesn’t happen
again.

Prosecutor: …appeals to the European Court and we’ll see what the European Court will say.

Koutelou: So it doesn’t happen again. When it does happen again, the law will be meaningless.

Prosecutor: Listen, madam. So it doesn’t happen again… Oh! Meaning this is the mentality of Nasreddin Hoca. Right? So you don’t break the vase – Hoca says to his son – I’ll beat you in advance so you’ll be careful!

Koutelou: No, that’s not it at all! It’s nothing like that!

Prosecutor: This is what you’re saying to me.

Koutelou: When you condone a crime, when you say that the Holocaust didn’t happen and you say that to….

Prosecutor: He is not condoning a crime here!!

Koutelou: He is condoning it because he says, “it should have happened! It didn’t happen but it should have.”

Prosecutor: Listen. Let’s start from what you’re saying: He is denying the Holocaust. It’s his right to deny it. Some other historian will come along and take him on in a scholarly way. He’ll say, “Sir, you are wrong for this and that reason.”

Koutelou: Throughout Europe the right to deny the Holocaust is being denied because…

Prosecutor: What did you say??? It’s being denied???? Are you speaking seriously madam???

Prosecutor: Madam, if you want to know, the objective of Law 927/79 was to protect the Gypsies, who had suffered from what you are talking about. They weren’t allowed into shops; they weren’t issued boat tickets; or allowed on ships; they weren’t allowed in cafés; shopkeepers refused to sell them jackets, trousers, shirts; for these reasons, if you want to look more deeply into the matter…

Prosecutor: Here, all sorts of perverts and junkies are running around, and all the muddleheaded intellectuals and progressives come out saying: “Oh! The right to diversity. Oh!! The right to [free] expression.” And everyone says: Fine and well!

In Jaywalker’s blog I happened to run on a post he did on a university study on bigotry; the post was so interesting that I decided to steal his find and post about it also here – no hard feelings I hope.

Vani K Borooah from the University of Ulster and John Mangan from the University of Queensland were the key authors in this rather interesting study. The study included 23 countries from the so called Western World; practically Europe, USA, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. The key question was:

“Would you like to have a person from this group as your neighbour?”

The 5 groups were: of a different race, muslims, jews, immigrants or foreign workers and homosexuals. The study didn’t only concentrate on this question but went on to analyse how bigotry was distributed between groups, how it related to the country in question, to political beliefs, unhapiness and other indices.

The results were unsettling both for the Western World and Greece. Copying the findings of the study:

The highest proportion of bigoted persons (bigotry count ratio) was in Northern Ireland and Greece – where, respectively, 44 and 43 percent of respondents did not want persons from at least one of the five groups as their neighbours – and the lowest proportion of bigoted persons was in Sweden (13 percent), Iceland (18 percent), Canada (22 percent), and Denmark (22 percent).

The value of the bigotry gap ratio – the mean, percentage amount by which the bigotry scores of all the persons was above the bigotry line (z=1) – was also highest for Greece (51 percent) and Northern Ireland (50 percent): not only did these countries have a high proportion of bigoted persons, bigots in these countries were, on average, more bigoted than in countries.

Greece scored second worse for people from a different race, universally worse for muslims, second worse for jews (with Spain being surprisingly first), 4th worse for immigrants and 4th worse for homosexuals. The troubling fact was that, while countries usually had some groups that they disliked in particular, Greece scored high in bigotry in all 5 groups; practicaly sharing a first place with Northern Ireland if we take into account all indices. Practically almost 1 out of 2 people in Greece would not like as a neighbour, at least, one of the aforementioned groups, (43.2% to be exact). Also the greek population of bigots is the most bigotted one on the whole western world.

Even after controlling for personal characteristics, the likelihood of a person being bigoted depended on the country in which he/she lived. With Northern Ireland as the residual country, and after controlling for personal characteristics, persons who lived in Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Iceland, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Sweden, and the USA were less likely to be bigoted (and strongly bigoted) – and persons who lived in Greece were more likely to be bigoted (and strongly bigoted) – than those living in Northern Ireland. The country effect for the other countries was not significantly different from zero.

What I didn’t expect for Greece was such a high degree of homophobia, equally high with the very catholic Italy and Ireland. I didn’t also expect such a high percentage for muslims but I imagine that the equation muslim=turk still works against muslim acceptance. At least immigrants were the most accepted from all groups, though still the rate of rejection was extremely high. As far as jews are concerned there weren’t any surprises with Greece being twice as judeophobic, as the media of the Western World. Interestingly enough, this was also the group were Greece differed more from the western media, scoring 97% more.

To tell the truth I feel that real percentages must be higher. The question was fairly straight-forward and at least some people must have dodged answering in a negative way against some groups, as not to appear racist. I doubt that this is the case in Greece as people still do not actually think that racist behaviors are socially unacceptable – I’m trying this moment to back this sensation with some tangible data.

Anyway still quite disturbing and as far as jewish presence is concerned verifies what we’ve been saying insofar. I’m even more troubled if I think that the paper didn’t included Roma; I tremble when I think what the percentages would be in that case.

Wishing to keep the holiday spirit rolling, I thought that it would be interesting hearing about this. Easter in the christian orthodox tradition has always a far greater weight than Christmas and it’s celebrations are always solemn in churches and joyous in the countryside.

One of the characteristic celebrations is the “Burning of Judas” which is also presented as the “Burning of the Jew” and at least in one place as the “Burning of the Nigger”. In the last days of Easter a stuffed doll in humanlike dimensions is being prepared, stuffed with inflammable material and often with fireworks. It is hanged, in some places shot upon and ultimately burned. All this is accompanied by insults, curses but also great joy from the children. In the past it was also a chance for an occasional outburst of the population as various ethnographic and literary sources tell us; the mob set fire to a house or two in the local jewish neighbourhood but usually it was reduced to stone throwing – almost never human casualties were noted but an occasional beating of a jew found nearby, wasn’t completely rare. Of course all these happened where jewish communities were present; lacking jews the “Burning of the Jew/Judas” took a more folkloristic turn with absolutely no physical violence involved and this is the form we find it today.

For details on how it is done and photos one can visit the Akanthou in Cyprus page, a page from Crete containing also anti-jewish carols, pages from Hydra and again from Crete. In the same page one can read the carols that small children sang in Volos cursing jews.

A source from the end of the 19^th century tells us about the Burning of the Jew in a village in the greek Asia Minor:

It remains alive in my memory this custom from home, the burning of the jew.. [...] I waited with anxiety this day. [...] We thought and felt some kind of delight because we were taking revenge [...] Friday night before Easter we would light up the fire and then throw the jew and he would be set ablaze and all the kids would yell like victors after a triumph with something wild together. [...] The fire would become enormous, the flames would reach high and light ,the beach and the boats in see would see from far away the flames and would know than in Petroumi the christians burn the jew. That day jews would hide in their homes and didn’t dare set foot outside. They kept the children inside and didn’t even go to their shops. The children had such a fury, such hatred that searched a jew to burn him alive”.

This kind of physical violence, which disrupted the public order and the fact that this custom has pagan roots led the Holy Synod of the Greek Orthodox Church to condemn it unequivocally in encyclicals in 1891, 1910 and 1918. In these official papers it is condemned and repeated that this tradition: “…incites religious hatred and fosters fanatism.”; also it repeated that: “the observance of these traditions is going against the basis and foundations of our faith”. Although these encyclicals were never revoked, modern religious leaders have failed to repeat these concepts and even attended such events, indirectly approving them. On the other hand, persons like the spokesperson of the Holy Synod have recalled them in a recent article and claimed that they remain valid examples of the good nature of the Greek Church. Other local religious leaders like the former Metropolite of Alexandroupolis Anthimos, (who isn’t characterised by feelings of love towards greek jews), have issued similar encyclicals as recently as 2005. In his, independently of his other racist declarations, excellent circular he asks the communities of Chilis and Amphitritis: “Does the burning of Judas, which is wrongfully maintained in your communities, have anything to do with the Resurrected Jesus Christ which we will celebrate in a few days? [...] For this I ask you and I urge you and I beseech these two communities of Chilis and Amphitritis to stop this unhistorical, uncivilised and unchristian custom. [...] The Holy Synod of Greece has condemned with encyclicals in 1891, 1910 and in 1918 this atrocious custom.”

Of course later he also states why, in my humble opinion, really gets him mad:
“It is an insult to the holy Epitaph since it includes the immaculate body of the God of love, to forsake it during the procession and stay back to set fire to Judas! ” (exclamation marks follow faithfully the ones in the original).

The antisemitic character of this custom was obvious also to the Catholic Church which in the mixed orthodox-catholic island of Syros forced it’s abolition. We read: “this custom generated anti-Semitic feelings among the Catholics and was therefore abolished by Jesuit monks, despite public reactions”.

It isn’t only opinion of the Greek Orthodox Church that this is a custom that promotes hatred, but also of the scientific community. Professor of Modern Greek Language at the University of Thessaloniki F.Abatzopoulou, concurs that the “Burning of Judas” is the “most familiar and widespread manifestation of traditional anti-Semitism in Greece.” Korombokis and Kotinis also state that in Thessaloniki the custom was linked with traditional hatred towards jews based on religious grounds.

A special reference should also be made in the case of Dalmedico Abba who was the delegate of the jewish community in the ottoman held Chania in Crete. Member of the local Assembly in 1875 he proposed and apparently managed to approve the abolition of the “Burning of Judas” though there are doubts if eventually this decision was implemented. In any case it serves as an example of jewish opposition to the custom and it’s obvious antisemitic character through time.

So, in theory we have a situation where the Greek Church, despite local support to this custom, has officially taken a strong stance against it, the scientific community which also talks against it, the local Jewish Community which has protested against it, we are aware of the antisemitic feeling that creates since it’s well documented in literature and folklore and also Human Rights groups like the Greek Helsinki Monitor, each year protest against it. So where is the problem? The problem is that it still continues today since nobody actually wants to actively move against it. Even worse, it gets promoted officially by the Greek State through it’s National Tourism Organization. In it’s site there are several references, (here, here and here) when describing easter customs in various parts of Greece, showing it’s a widespread phenomenon. Unfortunately even some members of the Greek Church chose intentionally to ignore what the same Church has admitted; an example is the Metropolite of the greek island of Hydra. In 2005 the Central Jewish Board sent a letter to the Metropolite asking him to pronounce on this custom on the island of Hydra. Instead the office of the mayor responded, (!), that this custom was “connected with the greek War of Independence” without of course explaining how these two things are connected. The Central Board was not satisfied with this explanation and responded to the mayor; as far as I know it was also repeated this year.

To an extent it is possible to say that how, greek institutions and greek society, deal with this matter it is indicative of how the phenomenon of anti-Semitism and hate speech are treated in Greece. Although it is clear that the phenomenon is linked with antisemitic manifestations, although official sources like the Church of Greece have condemned it, although nobody denies that even today there are racist outbursts during the burning, although there are numerous documented incidents, it is still regarded as a matter of foreign interference! How is this? Even among known members of the greek blogosphere or among the known neo-Nazi groups like Crissi Avgi and LAOS the whole matter only appears when the State Department accuses Greece of anti-Semitism and lists the “Burning of Judas­/Jew” as one of it’s manifestations. The protests of the greek jewish community simply don’t register! Nobody gives a damn about them; only when the americans make a generic statement, which even they don’t really pay attention, the greek society decides to talk about it! And I think it’s indicative the fact that the government member that is called to comment is the vice-minister of Defence as if we were talking about a foreign state and not about insults to greek citizens!

Anyway to complete the picture we need to state that the “guest of honour” during the easter celebrations isn’t only played by jews. In a twisted deviation of the custom in the village of Gastouni the jew is substituted by a black man and the whole ceremony is called literally “The Burning of the Nigger”. In other pages we also learn that the Roma are accused of forging the nails that were used to crucify Jesus, (no one remembers that there were no Roma in Palestine for centuries so it was physically impossible for them to do it). The oral tradition goes that this is the reason which do not settle in any land, a punishment for their presumed involvement.

I’d like to end this small post with a small discovery I made. One of the sites which lists all of the traditional customs for Easter and relative songs, that are often an open incitation against jews and roma, is this one. To my great surprise I found out that it is the site of the Regional Directorship of the Primary Education in Thessaly, (the organization that coordinates elementary schools in the greek region of Thessaly). The page is listed as a page which includes recommended material for Easter celebrations inside the schools. It contains things that are already known but it is simply amazing and disgusting that they are officially proposed to be taught at small children! Some of the things that the greek educational system considers that need to be taught in all schools, re-enacted in schools plays and be sang by children from 6 to 12 years old, include the following:

1)Of course the Burning of Judas/Jew with relative details.

2)The Easter carols which says:

“Σήμερον μαύρος ουρανός, σήμερον μαύρη μέρα, “Today black sky, today black day
σήμερα κόσμος θλίβουνται και τα βουνά λυπούνται, today the people grieve and mountains grieve
σήμερα βάλανε βουλή οι άνομοι Εβραίοι, today the wicked Jews decided
οι άνομοι και τα σκυλιά κ‘ οι τρισκαταραμένοι, the wicked dogs and the threefold cursed
για να σταυρώσουν το Χριστό, τον πάντων βασιλέα to crucify Christ, the king of all

3)The carols that accompany the Burning of Judas/Jew; they testify how these two figures are interchangeable to the public opinion, (the poem is in rimes so difficult to translate):

“Ράτσα, κεράτσα lady, milady
δώσ‘ μια κληματσίδα give me some vine wood
να κάψουμε τον Οβριγιό to burn the Jew
πόχει πολλή κασσίδα, that has a lot of filth
Οβριγιός φορεί φτερό the Jew wears a feather
στο κεφάλι τ‘ το ξερό…” on his mulish head…

4) In Easter, jars are broken “to the joy of Christ and ridicule of the Jews”.

5) Among the traditional customs it mentions that on Good Friday “no craftsman touched a nail because the gipsy nailed with nails Christ”.

It is completely unacceptable that small children learn how and why to hate Jews and Roma. It is simply appalling that these traditions are passed upon small children in the form of songs and there isn’t even recommended that the hatred towards jews should be minimized. It is simply frustrating and disappointing to see that the hatred towards jews, even at the form of traditions which are by the admission of the Church antisemitic, is passed from the elders to the younger with the blessing of the Greek State and the educational system which fails miserably even to understand that what it does is contrary to it’s mission or even to common decency. Maybe this is an exception? Evidently not since the Parents and Guardians Association of the 3^rd Elementary school of Alimos has a site containing the same carols.

I’d like to expressly state that in no way I think that people who participate are raging racists who yearn to burn jews and since they can’t, they limit themselves to dolls. I’m sure that most of them consciously do not understand that what they do is wrong. The problem here is that the Greek State and generally people like the mayor of Hydra do know the racist nature of it, but still they choose not to act against it. This isn’t simply a case of jews being oversensitive; it is the Greek Church herself who has condemned it as an act against the christian faith and modern religious leaders describe it as atrocious.

Each time I think of anti-Semitism in Greece I think that the situation is hopeless. Not because the situation is so desperately violent, (even though each year that passes it becomes significantly worse), but because nobody seems to care. The same institutions that are supposed to work towards diminishing the hatred, are the ones who work actively to propagate it! When in school the textbooks often have antisemitic references or completely ignore jews and the Holocaust, when school actively perpetuates racist traditions and songs, when the school teachers are often completely ignorant on racism issues, when the system fails to pursue a policy of integration and often schools end up as the privileged place of nationalistic actions, how can we ever hope in a change? A quote says that “A pessimist is only a well informed optimist” – I think it fits perfectly in this case.

Recently a comment by Donna reminded me of a famous speech which was attributed to Martin Luther King . In that speech Dr.King allegedly attacks anti-zionists as being in fact anti-semites. I searched a bit to see if it’s true and I’ve found that: “The idea accurately portrays the opinion of Dr. King, but the speech as quoted is a forgery” as BoycottWatch refers.

This is what Dr.King actually said and what has been confirmed as authentic:

King was, however, quoted by Dr. Seymour Martin Lipset, who is currently the Hazel Professor of Public Policy of George Mason University and a professor at the Hoover Institution of Stanford University. The noted sociologist and political analyst wrote the article “The Socialism of Fools: The Left, the Jews and Israel” which was published in the December, 1969 (page 24) edition of Encounter magazine, and was reprinted in other publications.

The article states: “Shortly before he was assassinated, Martin Luther King, Jr., was in Boston on a fund-raising mission, and I had the good fortune to attend a dinner which was given for him in Cambridge…One of the young men present happened to make some remark against the Zionists. Dr. King snapped at him and said, “Don’t talk like that! When people criticize Zionists, they mean Jews. You’re talking anti-Semitism!”

 

I’m not here to debate on whether in fact anti-zionism is another name for antisemitism, or it is simply used to avoid legitimate political criticism to Israel. Although I have to remind that the term “antisemite” was invented in the late 19th century when “antijew” or “jew hater” became politically undesirable terms and one wished to cloak his hate under more scientific terms. Anyway I just wanted to give the opinion of one who definitely can’t be accused of being controlled by the almighty World Domination jewish lobby!

I just wanted to add that the problem isn’t simply the circulation of such stuff. Hate speech circulates in all parts of the world and unfortunately is a plight we all must fight. The problem is that, in Greece, this isn’t perceived as a phenomenon that needs to be eradicated. People are way too tolerant when facing hate speech and cases are that the offended party ends up getting accused that it creates trouble! Which teacher will dare confiscate such a CD and not have a pair of angry parents screaming over him, not even understanding what their kid did wrong? Such a situation must change; zero tolerance on intolerance!

Mikis Theodorakis, the famous greek composer, emblematic figure of the greek Left and resistance fighter during the 7yr military regime did it again. The other day during a ceremony for the presentation of a new work he began a phillipic against those who dare to talk against the Archibissop of Greece, Christodoulos. “In Greece we have two institutions, he said, the President of the Democracy and the head of the Greek Church, whoever dares to talk about them should rinse his mouth first!” I remind that Christodoulos is accused of being racist, politically oriented and supporter of far right groups.

But then he went on to his favorite target, the jews wanting to rule the world. He suggested that: the Old Testament should be removed from the schools because it is written than Israel shall overpower and exterminate his enemies. We can’t say these things today. Look at what is happening in the Middle East with the help of Bush and the help of Rice.

Theodorakis in the past had described jews as being “the root of evil” and controlling the world’s economy, banks and mass media. He had also said that they control the world music industry plus the usual stuff about jews having a superiority complex and wanting to control the world. I repeat these things just for the casual reader who might thing that the guy wanted to be politically correct. He again made his favorite mess of jews, Israel, religion and antiamericanism while never ever showing any awareness of how deeply insulting his words are.

Typical of the greek paradox nobody rose to challenge these new views of Theodorakis. There was only a moderate criticism on the fact that he decided to support the Archibissop which has risen into a protagonist of the greek political life in a negative manner. Even more when the Archibissop is accused of supporting the dictatorship during and aftwerwards, while at the same time Theodorakis was exiled because of the regime!

Because of the objective value of his work and his anti-dictatorship fight Theodorakis is venerated in Greece; he was even the greek candidate for the Nobel prize for Peace. I can understand that and I feel he might have been worthy of it in the past. But for the past years he has made one huge mistake after the other and now I can’t find a reason why he shouldn’t even join the xenophobic LAOS party, (he has shown that he doesn’t have problem with changing parties in the past).

Malakas (Greek: nom. μαλάκας, voc. and acc. μαλάκα, μαλακισμένε, fem. μαλάκω, μαλακισμένη) is a slang word, whose literal translation is wanker but the register of the term varies widely between its America/British English usage and its Greek usage. A more appropriate rendering covers a much broader spectrum of applications, including both English equivalents of asshole or jerk or dick or son of a bitch, and the contrasting friend or pal or dude, depending on the context.

I grew up in a rather poor part of my city which still maintained the populist image of the neighborhood/γειτονιά typical of the Greek cities in the past decades. It was a time where parents were a bit less anxious and maybe a bit more naïve and let their kids roam about freely and play in the open spaces that still existed, (the Greek term is not translatable but certainly will invoke memories for the Greek readers: αλάνες).

Each day my best friend N. would come by my house and yell my name for me to come down.

Then we would join the others in patrolling the neighborhood, playing soccer or all the other things kids do when they can simply enjoy a kid’s life. My family lived there since the ‘60s and everyone knew everyone and I can’t say that I was ever singled out as a Jew though we were the only Jewish family within sight. Hell, some of the kids were sometimes envious of my best friend N. because I was Jewish! Why? Because whenever an orthodox priest would pass by he’d take me to kiss his hand in sign of respect, as all the kids would do though in my case I was told to change my name to Manolis and avoid telling I’m a Jew; I didn’t mind since I thought of it like some kind of game. But the priest, since I was younger than the rest of the group and apparently was fond of me, sometimes gave me small wooden crosses which I would promptly give it to my friend who’d boast about it to the others making me proud of being able to make my friend happy.

As kids of course there would always be some strife and despite the usual “killer of Christ” or “Judas” that somebody would throw at me I wasn’t targeted for my Jewishness or at least I was too little to understand it, though of course I was always considered different. Although these remarks were of undeniable anti-Semitic origin, they were tossed at me the same way I was accused in my school of being a supporter of a specific soccer team while everybody else was supporting other teams – just another way between small kids to obtain victory over their companion. In the end of the day I would return to my folks asking them what my friends meant but I must admit that whatever explanations my parents made up mustn’t have been very convincing because I kept asking them each time. But the next day would arrive and we’d make friends again and begin all over , so I didn’t pay too much attention to these outbursts.

The fact though that these remarks are the seeds for the future conscious and dangerous racism to be found in adults is another question which deserves a post of it’s own. Also I prefer not to delve as to what was said in their homes about us, that was leading small kids to repeat mechanically “killer of Christ” and “Judas” – the same homes that I would visit occasionally to pick up my friends or return to pick a ball. These talks, unfortunately or fortunately, were beyond my ears and it was hard to imagine something less of an idyllic situation then.

Still I remember clearly one day, when I was seven years old, coming out the door of my home to find a big graffiti with capital letters in blue paint: “ΕΒΡΑΙΕ ΜΑΛΑΚΑ” (JEW ASSHOLE). I was delighted by the fact that somebody had climbed over the 2mt. wall that surrounded our house and written something about us even though I didn’t understand it’s meaning fully, so I called my grandparents out which swiftly took me inside without answering any questions. I remember that when my dad returned he kept staring at it, while I was standing beside him asking him what it meant. At this point I should say “malàka” (asshole) is the same word as “malakà” (softly) and only the accentuation changes. Well, apparently I was able to read but I hadn’t been corrupted, as I am now, because I remember I kept reading “jew softly” and I couldn’t understand why they had written that or what it meant. The letters were big and judging by their size they weren’t written by a kid but by an adult. In any case I was ordered not to ask in the neighborhood who did it, which I disobeyed only to find out that my friends were hesitant to talk about it. I don’t recall how my parents reacted the following days or weeks but I do remember that; my efforts to talk about it now resulted in their firm denial to “dig old stories” and I “should stop thinking these things”. In any case, my dad got a bucket of paint and promptly painted over even though some blue shades were still visible underneath. Of course no police was involved since there was little for them to do, though I have serious doubts that they’d actually do something even if they indeed had leads. In any case hate speech is not considered really a crime in Greece and is not actively combated today as multiple examples prove and this was even much truer then.

This episode got me thinking some years afterwards. How would I react if I had a family? I see much worse graffiti in the walls of the universities and this “jew asshole” frankly seems quite a flimsy attempt to frighten us; though we should keep in mind that the times then, were less verbally violent, so it isn’t such a low profile attack as one would be led to believe judging by today’s standards. Still I’ve been called much worse things and even now I don’t think this graffiti necessarily implied physical violence. But still would I take the chance to dismiss these fears so easily if I had children? Would I let them go out again this easily, while knowing that a person/persons felt it was worth the trouble getting a bucket of blue paint, jumping in the night a 2mt wall, risk being seen by the neighbors and get caught by cops as a possible burglar just cause he thought Jews was such a bad thing? How much fear would my parents have when seeing me not getting back home early? And how much fear would they have me getting beat up or similar? Nowadays parents are afraid of a possible stranger who might harm their kids, in this case they knew that there was certainly someone out there who hated us.

This is part of the reason why the Jews in Greece are so silent though we must distinguish the response of individuals and the official response of the Jewish Community by the mouths of the local Jewish Communities or the Central Jewish Board. Whereas the latter is concerned there are more aspects to consider which concern the traditional inwardness of jews, the greek society in general and many other things which deserve a post of their own; I must remark that I often personally find myself in disagreement with their silence though I understand the reasons behind this decision. But as this djudeospanish proverb, I mentioned before, says: If a rock hits the glass then the glass will break. If the glass hits the rock, still it’s the glass that breaks.

At some point my family moved to a newer house and I lost tracks of my old friends though I occasionally have encountered a couple of them and shared a story or two. No trauma involved and I still remember fondly my old neighbourhood when I visit it even if my house together with many others gave way to modern block of flats. Eventually I grew up and learned what “malàkas” means and even grew fond of using it like many Greeks do. But I’ll never forget my first contact with it painted with blue.

As every year the US State Department issued it’s “Report on Human Rights Practices”. Surely it’s gonna create malcontent in Greece since it isn’t all flowers and roses and will be perceived as US intervention in private affairs but still I think it’s a good initiative; hope the greek/EU protests on Guantanamo will create the same clamor. Here’s the excerpts dealing with the greek jewish community:

The law provides for freedom of religion; however, non‑Orthodox groups at times faced administrative obstacles or legal restrictions on religious practices.

The law establishes the Eastern Orthodox Church of Christ (Greek Orthodoxy) as the “prevailing” religion. The Greek Orthodox Church continued to exercise significant political and economic influence. The government financially supported the Greek Orthodox Church and also paid the salaries and some expenses of the two official Muslim religious leaders in Thrace. Jewish leaders requested that the government pay rabbis’ salaries, given its practice of paying Orthodox priests’ and Muslim muftis’ salaries; the government had not responded to this request by year’s end.

The government, by virtue of the status of the Greek Orthodox Church as the prevailing religion, recognizes de facto its canon law. Privileges and legal prerogatives granted to the Orthodox Church are not extended routinely to other recognized religions. Orthodox Church officials refused to enter into dialogue with religious groups that they considered harmful to Orthodox worshippers, and they instructed their members to shun followers of these faiths.

Non-Orthodox citizens claimed that they faced career limits in the military, police, fire‑fighting forces, and civil service due to their religion.

Legislation providing for religious worker visas was passed in 2005, remedying the difficulty reported in the past by some religious denominations in renewing the visas of non-EU citizen religious officials.

Religious instruction is mandatory for all Greek Orthodox students in primary and secondary schools, but not for non‑Orthodox students. Some government-approved religious textbooks made derogatory statements about non-Greek Orthodox faiths. Since schools did not supervise non-Orthodox children while Greek Orthodox children were taking religious instruction, non-Orthodox parents complained that they were effectively forced to have their children attend Greek Orthodox classes.

The Jewish community has approximately 5,000 members. Anti-Semitism continued to exist, particularly in the extremist press. The mainstream press and public often did not clearly distinguish between criticism of Israel and comments about Jews. In 2004 the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance, the Wiesenthal Center, the Anti-Defamation League, and GHM criticized the press for carrying anti-Semitic stories and cartoons on several occasions. For example, on August 16, Eleftherotypia, the second largest daily newspaper, published a cartoon depicting an Israeli soldier praying with a rifle that was firing swastikas. Candidates for the political party LAOS, the fifth largest party, have made anti-Semitic statements during the campaign for municipal offices in the Fall. The party’s weekly paper A1 published strongly anti-Semitic articles accusing the Israelis of genocide against the Lebanese people. A July editorial stated that if “the Jews continue this way, they will beat Hitler’s number of victims.” Anti-Semitic references as well as comparisons with the Holocaust were common in the press during the July-August conflict involving Israel and Lebanon, while some major media promoted the image of Israel as the “Nazi-state.” On the other hand, Hezbollah fighters were often seen as “freedom fighters” and “resistance groups.”

Vandalism of Jewish monuments decreased, although the Holocaust monument in Thessaloniki was vandalized during an antiwar demonstration in August; the government condemned the vandalism. As of December, police had not found the perpetrators of the 2004 desecration of Holocaust memorials in Komotini in Thrace. Several times throughout the year extreme right-wing groups painted anti-Semitic graffiti along with their symbols and organization names at multiple locations, including the busy Athens‑Corinth and Athens-Tripoli highways, and other public structures. In February the prosecutor filed a lawsuit against “Golden Dawn” for defacing public property and painting anti-Semitic graffiti during the course of the last several years.

In April the Central Board of the Jewish Communities of Greece continued to protest the Easter tradition of burning a life-size effigy of Judas, sometimes referred to as the “burning of the Jew,” which they maintained propagated hatred and fanaticism against Jews. One Greek Orthodox bishop, a local NGO, and the Wiesenthal Center expressed formal written objections to this tradition. The Jewish Community also protested anti-Semitic passages in the Holy Week liturgy and it reported that it maintained a dialogue with the Orthodox Church about the removal of these passages.

Some schoolbooks carried negative references to Roman Catholics, Jewish persons, members of Jehovah’s Witnesses, and others.

Negotiations continued between the Jewish community of Thessaloniki and the government to find acceptable restitution for the community’s cemetery, expropriated after its destruction during the Holocaust. Aristotle University, a public institution, was built on top of the expropriated cemetery.

Jewish community leaders condemned anti-Semitic broadcasts on small private television stations, but authorities did not bring charges against these largely unlicensed operators.

The government co-sponsored commemorative events in Athens and Thessaloniki in January for Holocaust Remembrance Day. This was followed two weeks later by the visit of Israel’s President Moshe Katsav, the first official visit of an Israeli head of state. The Ministry of Education distributed materials to schools on the history of the Holocaust to be read in all schools on Holocaust Remembrance Day, and teacher-training seminars on the Holocaust were held.

Religious affiliation was very closely linked to ethnicity. Many attributed the preservation of national identity to the actions of the Greek Orthodox Church during approximately 400 years of Ottoman rule and the subsequent nation-building period. The Church exercised significant social, political, and economic influence, and it owned a considerable, although undetermined, amount of property.

Many Greeks assumed that any ethnic Greek was also an Orthodox Christian. Some non-Orthodox citizens complained of being treated with suspicion or told that they were not truly Greek when they revealed their religious affiliation.
In June 2006, an amendment to an existing law was accepted by Parliament abolishing the practice by which the ministry sought the opinion of the local Greek Orthodox bishop on whether to grant house of prayer permits for faiths other than Greek Orthodox. Non-Orthodox faiths had objected to this practice.

Greece isn’t characterized by a high sense of civil duty when it comes to respect of private or public property and graffiti, (and I don’t mean nice drawings like this but pointless slogans usually politically or sport oriented), is widespread. These slogans are great social indicators and often are excellent to use when analyzing social trends.

Teacher Dude’s Grill and BBQ blog had some interesting photos from Thessaloniki. The last one is especially colorful, was spotted near the stadium of PAOK, (a soccer/basketball team from Salonica) and is the one reproduced here. Out of respect for his students, I imagine, he didn’t translate it but I thought it was worthwhile:

“Jews Gay…” – “Jews cunts”

I thought it was interesting to see how in an effort to insult their opponents the fans use the classical insults from the racist/sexist repertoire. For a man, presuming that all supporters are male, an opponent is so low in the food chain that he can be compared only to women and homosexuals. While for women they use the derogative term “cunts” concentrating on what women are good for, (as their philosophy implies), we see that for homosexuals they simply write “gay” and not a worse term like “fagots” or something similar; maybe they feel just the word is enough to procure offense. And of course a standard adjective is the “jew” which is the carrier of a wide variety of negative values and always a sure way to denigrate an opponent.

Always the hooligan insults in Greece are characterized by an extreme actuality and the exact opposite of political correctness. It is interesting that once a friend asked me if, as a greek Jew myself, knew if indeed Jews had founded the team of Aris Saloniki. I answered that to the best of my knowledge that this was not true and I inquired on why he wanted to know. He replied that often other fans accused him that his team was founded by Jews and he wanted to verify it! Apparently the simple fact that possibly a jew could be involved in the founding of a team was a reason enough to be contaminated, a kind of original sin. It wasn’t important that Aris doesn’t have anything to do with jews, (neither players, nor managers, nor anything else in his history), it was enough that a jew might have “touched” him to contaminate him forever without any chance of redemption. By the way probably this is the reason of why jews get the dubious honour of getting mentioned twice on the same wall, they get identified with the arch-enemy of PAOK, the team of Aris. So they become target for two reasons: one because as jews they’re a just object of hate and also because they’re identified with the traditional opponents.

Although hate speech in Greece is proscribed by law, people aren’t really scandalized when seeing it and in the specific case of graffiti no action is ever taken. Even repeated and specific requests by human rights organizations to erase them have no effect like the numerous reports by the Greek Helsinki Watch show. Anyway to wrap this post up here’s an advice for our foreign readers: next time you’ll want to insult your greek friend go with the “jew”, it’s a no-brainer!
