Here is the 1928 movie that inspired the creation of the Joker from Batman. This is also the first film in which Jack Pierce does the make up, including that for Conrad Veidt’s character.

To be honest I always thought that the Lon Chaney film Laugh Clown Laugh served as the inspiration for the Joker, until I saw this. Perhaps it was because Chaney was slated for the role that eventually went to Veidt. Chaney had signed a contract with MGM which meant that he could not work on this Universal film. Chaney also appeared as a clown in the earlier movie He Who Gets Slapped.

Regular readers of this blog probably know that I am a big fan of Tim Burton’s work. Thats why I was exited when I read on Wired that his art-work is now bundled in a 434 page thick book, displaying over 1000 drawings, doodles, paintings and evocative concept art dating back to Burton’s teen years in Burbank, California.Burton himself describes it as “40 years of notebooks, scraps of paper, napkins, etc.” Author and co-editor Leah Gallo writes that Burton’s intention is “to allow his fans a broad look inside his private pages.”

Took me a while to get todays list together I drank way too much Great Lakes Christmas Ale last night and have been sleeping most of the day. Anyway here are MY top five comic book movie fight scenes. It was a hard list to compile since there are so many good ones but these are my top five. What are yours?

Number Five: The Dark Knight: BatPod vs. Truck
This could have been the whole movie and I would have been just as happy.

Number 4: Sin City: Marv’s Story
Marv’s whole story is like a big long terrific fight scene.

Number Three: X-men 2: Nightcrawler at the Whitehouse
This scene is just down right amazing.

Number Two: Superman 2 Fight in Metropolis
This is the first fight scene of its kind and it still holds up in my opinion.

Number One: Spider-Man 2 Train Fight
This fight reminds me of what it felt like to read comics as a kid.

It has been reported recently that Studio Warner Bros. and Director Chistopher Nolen will supposedly announce plans for the next Batman movie  next Januray. Considering that most news related in Batman 3 has been fairly flimsy as of late, I certainly hope this is true.

If it weren’t for the fact that I know Johns is leaving this book after issue six, I would be okay with this Blackest Night interlude focusing on Superboy-Prime versus Black Lantern Alex Luthor but with this interlude, it means we are only getting one more issue of Superboy and that just sucks. Oh well. This was still good. It was great to see Earth-Prime comic shops and Superboy-Prime reading them to find out what happens next. And of course it was just awesome to see my  favorite Legion (The Legion of Earth-Prime) back! But I got to say that we just saw Superboy-Prime in Legion of Three Worlds and I think he is being brought back way too soon. The Legion back-up was probably the best it has been yet with a sweet story about Blok and White Witch.

So we took a look at the characters of The Road. This got me thinking:

I was blown away by Viggo Mortensen’s performance in The Road, but I found myself asking, what other great performances impacted me and our readers?

Maybe it was Heath Ledger’s haunting portrayal of The Joker, the classic performance of James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause, or Kate Winslet in Titanic.

i’m going to start keeping track of my dreams here, because otherwise i’ll forget them and i have way too many interesting dreams these days.

two nights ago, i dreamed i was being hunted by the joker as played by heath ledger in “the dark knight.” he was trying to kill me, so my mom bought me a gun. i was actually a really good shot–i even magically knew how to use the gun the first time i touched it–but i couldn’t kill him, which i suppose was what made the dream so scary. anyway, for some reason my mom and i went to hide out in a store in mexico. my ballroom teacher, victoria, was the store owner. and then the joker found us there and attacked me, and it was like a scene from “crouching tiger, hidden dragon” or something crossed with a scene from “criminal minds.” anyway, i finally killed him. it was horrible. i woke up still thinking i should get a gun, just in case. i must have still been half asleep because it seemed like a great idea at the time.

and then last night, i dreamed i was at my high school, but it was like the whole world or something was contained in the school. anyway, sarah and i were witches, and we were trying to find a prophecy for the end of the world so we could stop it. and we were in the bathroom which was actually a giant bathtub with toilets along the edge of it, and one of the black guys that’s part of the school’s security team was there with us, and we were singing this song–i can’t remember what it was–trying to find the prophecy. i kept throwing up and it was really disgusting, and then the song ended and the world was collapsing and we still hadn’t found the prophecy. and i was like “we need to sing ‘be ye lamps unto yourselves’! that will get us the prophecy!” and then i woke up.

I’m amazed with the briliant minds behind The Fun Theory .  I admire anyone making attempts to put a smile on people’s faces (but not forcefully like the Joker).

Fun Movie: Big

I recently discovered that November is the “Month of the Mo[ustache],” and I couldn’t be happier. Mainly, it’s because I have been waiting for the perfect time to unleash my favorite moustaches. To boot, I have also recently been bombarded with promising new moustachios:

Tim Norwind is sporting a fine little friend in the new OK Go video, WTF.
Jude Law will be looking quite adorables with his stache in Sherlock Holmes.
Michael Cera’s moustache in the upcoming Youth in Revolt has sealed his place in my heart.

To put it plainly, it is not that easy to pull of this look. Too many poor souls wander down the wrong side of a Ron Jeremy porn stache or Hulk Hogan handle bar. I’ll also say that only men 65+ can work the Wilford Brimley and only John Waters can rawk the John Waters pencil stache (ne the Vincent Price).

On to my list of the Top 10 ‘Staches:

Let it be known that Tom Selleck is king of the moustache, and inevitably tops any list of this variety. To give the other fellas a fair shake I’ll leave him at zero. Consider it the master level (Also, honorable mention goes to the foxxxy Sam Elliott and the grey co-pilot on his face).

10. Lando Calrissian

Point is, Lando knew how to accessorize. He worked the hell outta that cape. The stache was sweet icing on that periwinkle cake.

9. The Mario Bros

I’m technically cheating by doubling up here, especially since they have two very distinct looks…but I don’t care. It’s my list, so deal with it. Anywho, you think it is coincidence these two are the most iconic video game characters of all time? It’s all in the stache. Suck it, Link.

8. Jack Whitman (Jason Schwartzman in The Darjeeling Limited)

The beauty of a good moustache is that it adds to your character. Jack was the sweetest, oddest little brother that was made ten times better, because he was ’stached. Lines like “I love you too, but I’m gonna mace you in the face!” wouldn’t have been as cute without his trusty follicle emoter there to assist him.

7. Ramathorn (Jay Chandrasekhar in Super Troopers)

Props must be given to the only man I’ve ever heard pull off the “Who wants a moustache ride?” line without being all creepy. Plus, you know its a good stache if, post-shaving, the actor continues to look incomplete.

6. Basil Fawlty (John Cleese in Fawlty Towers)

I’ll just come out and say it: John Cleese is not as funny without the stache (I’ll make an exception for A Fish Called Wanda). Basil is the perfect example of good Cleese–high strung and hi-larious!

5. Ned Flanders

The soup strainer is where it’s at! Alls I’m sayin’ is if I lived in Springfield, I might swing past the Leftorium every now and again.

4. Freddie Mercury

He was pretty good without it, but this was a man made for the moustache. What good old-fashioned loverboy could do without one?

3. The Joker (Cesar Romero in Batman)

This is a serious stache. Romero was so keen on his little friend that he refused to shave it during his iconic turn as the Joker. That is awesome.

2. Rhett Butler (Clark Gable in Gone With the Wind)

It’s an oldie but goodie, for sure. Gable ruled this look until Selleck came along and ended the era of the skinny stache. On anyone else, this would just not work. Bonus: it tamed the wily Scarlett O’Hara. Power!

1. Daniel Plainview (Daniel Day Lewis in There Will Be Blood)

I think it might be time for the crown to be officially passed to DDL. He makes one fine moustache, and like everyone else on the list, just doesn’t look right without it. (Note: Bill the Butcher is quite fancy, but the thought of a heavily waxed stache is a bit too much to deal with.)

That’s it. So stop shaving, guys, and see what kind of man you are.

Note: I tried to keep this to straight on moustaches, so sorry, goatee and beard accompaniments.

What started out as a simple, single-camera Youtube production has rapidly turned into my favorite series to follow…on any format. The Joker Blogs is a masterfully constructed web series put together by a group of film-savvy batfans COMPLETELY dedicated to the story that all us bat-nerds know and love. Starting up where The Dark Knight left off, this group has created a captivating series chronicaling the Joker’s time in Arkham. Having only glimpsed the main bat-character’s of The Joker, Jeremiah Arkham, Harleen Quinzel (who we still haven’t ACTUALLY ever seen on camera), and Scarecrow (for a single episode), the group has proven that they know how to create so much with so little. Twelve episodes deep and with multiple shorts that coincided with the holidays, The Joker Blogs is currently in the midst of the Joker’s escape from Arkham.

As I mentioned before, many episodes are straight-on shots of the Joker in a confessional/documentary-esque style. What began as Harleen Quinzel’s attempt to document one of her most alluring patients, has turned into a hobby of the Joker’s; he sees the Youtube phenomenon as a cheap, easy, and intriguing way to broadcast his endeavors to the masses at large. The series has almost no budget, however, and is putting together episodes in literally two to three takes at times, yet it still manages to be an amazing stylistic achievement. The simple fact is that talent abounds in this group. From the exquisite scripts to the beautifully constructed web site and marketing scheme, everything about The Joker Blogs screams quality. The MOST amazing and important part of the equation of awesome, however, are the performances. The portrayal of the Joker is spot-on to Ledger’s iteration, with even a few added touches of genius to the character that help it flourish on its own. From the laugh to the cracked voice to the constant quiver that made Ledger’s clearly-unstable machination of the character stand out, The Joker Blog’s interpretation has nailed every facet of the character in the world that they are painting. While it is a bit awkward to not know who is behind the character himself (I couldn’t find the actor’s name anywhere, if anyone else can provide the info, by all means comment or just message me) it’s simply wonderful to see an actor bold enough and talented enough to take the initiative and succeed in recrafting a role that many critics whined “could never be done successfully again.” For the longest time, I was afraid that after Ledger’s death the mainstream would never ever touch my favorite villain again. With efforts like this, however, I feel safe assuming that the most absurd villain of all time will not forever be equated with the late, great Ledger. It simply wouldn’t be fair. These shorts DEMAND to be watched, though. Become immersed (it doesn’t take too long to catch up, most episodes come in at under 3 minutes), and help these guys garner some recognition for the sensational work that they are putting out! It’s obvious to this blogger that President Obama is no friend of the military. Marines are still being slaughtered in Afghanistan and General Stanley Mcchrystal  called on the President to urgently send in more troops. What did he get from the President? No response.

Soldiers were slaughtered yesterday in Texas by one of their own. And what does the military, the families and the American public get from the President? This Robert A. George story says it all.

President Obama didn’t wait long after Tuesday’s devastating elections to give critics another reason to question his leadership, but this time the subject matter was more grim than a pair of governorships.

After news broke out of the shooting at the Fort Hood Army post in Texas, the nation watched in horror as the toll of dead and injured climbed. The White House was notified immediately and by late afternoon, word went out that the president would speak about the incident prior to a previously scheduled appearance. At about 5 p.m., cable stations went to the president. The situation called for not only his trademark eloquence, but also grace and perspective.

But instead of a somber chief executive offering reassuring words and expressions of sympathy and compassion, viewers saw a wildly disconnected and inappropriately light president making introductory remarks. At the event, a Tribal Nations Conference hosted by the Department of Interior’s Bureau of Indian affairs, the president thanked various staffers and offered a “shout-out” to “Dr. Joe Medicine Crow — that Congressional Medal of Honor winner.” Three minutes in, the president spoke about the shooting, in measured and appropriate terms. Who is advising him?

Anyone at home aware of the major news story of the previous hours had to have been stunned. An incident like this requires a scrapping of the early light banter. The president should apologize for the tone of his remarks, explain what has happened, express sympathy for those slain and appeal for calm and patience until all the facts are in. That’s the least that should occur.

Indeed, an argument could be made that Obama should have canceled the Indian event, out of respect for people having been murdered at an Army post a few hours before. That would have prevented any sort of jarring emotional switch at the event.

Did the president’s team not realize what sort of image they were presenting to the country at this moment? The disconnect between what Americans at home knew had been going on — and the initial words coming out of their president’s mouth was jolting, if not disturbing.

It must have been disappointing for many politically aware Democrats, still reeling from the election two days before. The New Jersey gubernatorial vote had already demonstrated that the president and his political team couldn’t produce a winning outcome in a state very friendly to Democrats (and where the president won by 15 points one year ago). And now this? Congressional Democrats must wonder if a White House that has burdened them with a too-heavy policy agenda over the last year has a strong enough political operation to help push that agenda through.

If the president’s communications apparatus can’t inform — and protect — their boss during tense moments when the country needs to see a focused commander-in-chief and a compassionate head of state, it has disastrous consequences for that president’s party and supporters.

All the president’s men (and women) fell down on the job Thursday.  And Democrats across the country have real reason to panic.

It’s a sad state of affairs for the gaming industry when a title is being touted as ‘finally a brilliant superhero game.’

The amount of hero games that suck vastly outnumber the success stories… Iron Man, Superman – even the usually reliable Spiderman’s recent outings have been poor.

Sure, by all accounts (I’m yet to play it but will at some stage), the Wolverine game earlier this year was decent but it seems to be that The Dark Knight (with some help from the lads at Rocksteady Games) is the only one who is willing to stand up and be counted.

Before I start getting into the nitty gritty let me just say that the finished game is miles better than the Demo. I can see with the demo that they were trying to show combat and stealth but believe me it all works a lot better in game.

So, with Arkham Asylum taking place in one night – is there enough here to keep people playing?

The answer is a resounding yes. With some wonderful voice acting from the cast of the animated series, Batman: Arkham Asylum’s story moves at a good pace and familiar enemies are used to good effect throughout.

You’ll be tasked with getting from a to b, taking out groups of henchman via hand to hand combat or using stealth. But it never, ever feels as simple as that.

The combat itself is pretty cool, with square as attack and triangle as counter (to be activated when an opponent is about to attack). Batman will move seamlessly between opponents with you just pressing square and the direction of the enemy you want to hit.

Be warned though, one of the best things about this game is that guns do a hell of a lot of damage to Batman so you can’t storm armed opponents unless you want to die… lots.

You’ll also acquire a wonderful selection of weapons/gadgets such as the Batarang and the beautifully destructive explosive gel

There are also some puzzle elements, usually involving the detective mode (like an x-ray vision that alerts you to points of interest) but none are too taxing thankfully.

With such a vivid setting and a memorable selection of bad guys from Batman’s career it’s no surprise that Arkham Asylum is such a great game.

There are some stand out moments throughout the game but the encounters with Scarecrow certainly rank up there for me as some of the best gaming I’ve had this year.

Despite the odds being stacked against it, Batman: Arkham Asylum is a quality title that has had a lot of care put into making it. I’d recommend this to anyone, regardless of whether on not they are into the comics (I’m not btw).

Well, yesterday it was Halloween, and since I was celebrating it here in the US it had to be good, and it was. Thursday I was out looking for a costume, and I didn’t find anything I like. So I ended up improvising a bit, with my own clothes, and a friend who is a make up artist. The Joker ended up beeing my result! Walking around in New York last night was amazing, everyone was wearing great costumes, and the parade was even better! All in all a great night!

The Joker ruled Gotham City, one last time!

Tomorrow I have my English Business exam, so today has been all about preperation, but I’m not nervous
