I go back and forth on The Killers. I consistently like their singles, and the albums are also normally good for a few spins (and a return trip some time later), but Brandon Flowers has a jackass tendency, and the over the top nature of their music lacks the same pomp and circumstance that folks like Muse have to make them less annoying. But that’s neither here nor there, since this record is fantastic. I’m not qualified to try to make a “Best of the ’00s” list, but if I were, it’s a safe bet that Hot Fuss would make an appearance on it somewhere. The ’80s worship is incredible fun on songs like “Somebody Told Me” and “Smile Like You Mean It”, while the soaring chorus and bridge of “All These Things That I’ve Done” are easily the best moment on the entire album. Moments like “Believe Me Natalie” and “Andy, You’re A Star” fall flatter, almost as if The Killers are commenting on their own music, but small misfires aren’t nearly enough to kill the excessive joy of Hot Fuss.

Alles klar, der Robbie kann auch mal anders. Ich mußte es auch erst 3 mal hören um gefallen dran zu finden, aber bei dem rauf und runter gespiele vom The Killers Original ist das doch mal eine gelungene Abwechslung. Sind wir Menschen oder tanzende Marionetten? Ich finde zur Zeit bin ich wohl eher eine Marionette, aber ne nette!

Durante el concierto  que ofreció en Lima la banda norteamericana The Killers, Gian Marco  y su esposa Claudia Moro se lucieron muy cariñosos. En dicho espectáculo llevado a cabo la semana pasada, también estuvieron junto a Gian Marco Zignago, su gran amigo Pedro Suárez Vértiz, quién acudió junto a sus hijos.

Hace ya casi un año que The Killers tocaron en Londres y grabaron esos dos conciertos para editarlos en un DVD y un CD, y por fin tenemos el resultado.

La semana pasada salió a la venta “Live From the Royal Albert Hall Teaser”, su primer trabajo en directo, y la verdad es que me ha sorprendido gratamente, y eso que nunca me han gustado (salvo excepciones) este tipo de álbumes.

Brandon desprende carisma por los cuatro costados, y lo demuestra de principio a fin, en un disco sin trampa ni cartón, sin recordings ni trucos. Se trata del reflejo más fiel de una banda que está en racha. Ahora andan ocupados con su gira por Latinoamérica y ya en 2010 piensan marcharse a Australia para realizar una serie de conciertos que sirvan como punto y final a éste Tour agotador, mastodóntico y eterno.

Pero aún han sacado tiempo para grabar su correspondiente canción navideña (ya es una costumbre) a la que han titulado “Happy birthday Guadalupe“, que estará incluída en un EP junto a una versión del famosísimo “Hotel California” de los Eagles, y que sirve casi como anticipo de lo que será su próximo álbum de covers, cosa que aún nos tiene extrañados…

The Killers siguen hacia arriba, sin frenos y creo que ocupan un lugar privilegiado en el Mundo de la música, pero la ambición que tienen les llevará más alto todavía.

I’m not going to engage in the topic of whether New Moon is a good movie or not (but if you are interested in my thoughts on it, feel free to read my review at michaelbayistheantichrist.wordpress.com).  I would though like to draw everyone’s attention to the fact that the soundtrack for New Moon is pretty damn good.  Sadly, I think I must add that this is most likely awesome for the Twilight franchise, but not so awesome for these artists’ reputations.  Whatever gets people listening to good music, right?  … Maybe.

One aspect I miss of living in Europe and Germany in particular is going to gigs (concerts to the non-hip). I saw so many gigs in Germany and Europe in general over the last four years. It was fantastic and usually in smaller venues than usual. From the top of my head I’m going to try and remember all of them; Dave Matthews (twice), Stereophonics, Aimee Mann, Green Day, Snow Patrol, The Corrs (sssh, they are from my home town), Iron and Wine, Calexico, Peeping Tom, Mike Patton and Rahzel, Therapy?,  Pearl Jam, Sufjan Stevens, Oasis and most recently in Frankfurt my favourite band of all time; Faith No More. I had tickets to see Death Cab For Cutie but I couldn’t make it. Darn it.

Unfortunately here in Hong Kong not a lot of bands drop by. I miss going to see big names and not so big named bands. I’ve always loved live music more than recorded sessions. In fact after listening to some versions of songs live I can’t go back to the album version.

So joy of joys there are two gigs I will pay overpriced tickets for this coming January; Green Day and The Killers both playing at the AsiaWorld Expo – Arena on Lantau Island.

I have seen Green Day two times already and I’m always impressed so I’m looking forward to that one. Their latest album has some belters but overall it’s an o.k. album from them by their standards. The Killers I have just started listening to, I never really “got” them before but listening now to their discography I am digging it. Ya hear?!

Moving my blog from blogspot to here at WordPress! (: I’ve used wordpress on many of my domains, now I’m just using it freely.

I did this about a half an hour ago. I found a bunch of awesome photos from foto decadent that I just had to mix together and texturize. I like the turn out at the bottom but the top is too bright and unfocused/not sharp. I still love it though and the boy/girl concept I was trying to percieve in the picture turned out pretty good. (:

Aside from wanting this hair color/style (but I just got straight-cut bangs so fail -,-) I also want that girls outfit. The high-waisted shorts and crop sweater/top. I love it! I also love the high-waisted shorts with the boyfriend-tee and some leather jacket. It always looks stunning.

I am breaking out like crazy and it’s not anything good to my already-low-self-esteem. Thanks, a lot whoever made me and made up puberty. BULLSHIT.

Yay for another decade list of albums that influenced my growing up as a teenager. This list probably means jack-shit in the grand scheme of things, but regardless here are my top 40 records that I think owned. Just a note that one a band has had an album already appear, no more will come up, just to share it around.

40. The Killers – Hot Fuss (2004)

I remember back in 2004 when The Killers were the ultimate hype of the year, and so they should have been, they were great, and Hot Fuss was an amazing album. From “Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine” through to “Everything Will Be Alright”, this album owned my summer and was one of my first transitioning albums from my young, 13-year old rap and hiphop faze (everyone’s been there, okay?). I’m not sure if it was their catchy one-liners, or dominate 80’s synths, that would go on to really influence the bands I enjoy in music, but The Killers catchy pop riffs backed with Brandon Flowers lyrics “Make this go away without a word” in “Midnight Show” lifted my adolescence. What a shame The Killers never got back to this status as the following 2 albums that followed (not including Sawdust, b-side albums don’t count).

39. Sigur Rós – Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust (2008)

For me lyrics are a huge part of who I do and don’t enjoy listening to. So when Icelandic band Sigur Rós came into my life it breached all contracts. Understandably, hardly any of their tracks are in English but for some reason it doesn’t seem to faze me. Their music is simply so divine by tune of the song you can gather what it is about. And if you still don’t know you can make it up really. I suppose the influence of Thom Yorke putting forward that “this band is going to be huge” also helps ones inhibition and self promotion. I think with or without the word from Yorke Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust was always going to be a fantastic album.

38. The Shins – Chutes Too Narrow (2003)

Having your bands name come out of Natalie Portman’s mouth I guess impacts on a small minority of followers. Having your band pasted all over a soundtrack is another. Regardless, The Shins were always going to be as rated as they are, and their fantastic debut is no exception. Realistically, Garden State was an indie film, and although there have been amazing indie’s before it, ie. The Virgin Suicides collaboration with Air, Dappled Cities writing out the last couple of anthems for Disney. The Shins success has also been filled with rock n roll back-story that critics love to hear, from front-man James Mercer receiving death-threats from a neighbor while trying to write and record Wincing The Night Away. Chutes Too Narrow is full of fun and vibrant “indie” tracks that have easily impacted on the decades explosion in the indie world.

37. The Postal Service – Give Up (2004)

Ben Gibbard and James Figurine seemed like an unlikely couple, and many were skeptic from the start. One gave his soul to promotion on The OC and is now more commonly known as the king of the indie world, though 7 records in and signed to a major label. The other half of The Postal Service is an electronics genius. But when the two got together to do Give Up it proved a fantastic combination of talents, even among the music world. “Such Great Heights” has boastfully been covered more times by more artists than most (Ben Folds, Iron & Wine etc), not to mentioned a sneak cover every now and then, with one of the greatest lyrics in a song written, also covered by Teddy what’s-his-name. Give Up oozes confidence from start to finish.

36. Peter, Bjorn & John – Writer’s Block (2006)

For a good 18 months people all over the world could not stop whistling that pop brilliance that came out of the world wide hit “Young Folks”. It was enjoyable regardless of people not listening to the lyrics and hearing what the song was really about “If I told you things I did before, Told you how I used to be, Would you go along with someone like me?“. Writer’s Block is solid gold in every track from start to finish. In its lyrical brilliance of “Objects Of My Affection” to the short and sweetness of “Start To Melt” that you never want to end. And the devistating heart-break of “The Chills” with “Don’t know about love, But I know the lack of it” that rings in your ears for days after.

35. Iron & Wine – The Shepard’s Dog (2007)

After releasing multiple albums revolving around a simple husky voice and an old acoustic guitar, Samual Beam, better known as, Iron & Wine turned up the amps, switched on the distortion, and layered as many tracks down per song as possible to produce one of the fantastic albums of 2007. Though as Iron & Wine’s style of song-writing goes, it can be a bit hard to tell what he is writing about, The Shepard’s Dog tells the great Beam stories of love, loss, what he wants, and what seems out of reach, “There is a house by the sea, And an ocean between it and me“, though as Beam assures no distance is too far out of reach. This in-turn creates one of the fantastic folk records of the decade.

34. Augie March – Sunset Studies (2001)

While it seems apparent that not much “super-fantastic-omg-amazing” music comes out of the western parts of the southern hemisphere, Augie March are this fantastic Australian band that have circulated around for years. Though it wasn’t until 2006 and the release of the chart topping hit “One Crowded Hour” was released that they would come to fame, but I remember hearing back when I would have been so young hearing “There Is No Such Place” and the beautiful song that it is. Augie March seem to be king at beautiful arrangements of piano & guitar that can span out for any length of time, like on the eariness of “Hole In Your Roof” another key track.

33. Band Of Horses – Everything All The Time (2006)

Strongly influenced by the likes of Built To Spill and Interpol is the Seattle based 3-piece Band Of Horses with their stunning debut release of Everything All The Time. Like Built To Spill before them Band Of Horses follow the same multi-layered guitar, strongly dominated by lead rifs, arranged around Ben Birdwill’s beautiful and unique voice. Tracks like, “Our Sword” and “The Funeral” play key in this epic, 36 minute indie-pop gem of the decade that recieved critical praise among reviewers all over the world.

32. Daft Punk – Discovery (2001)

Something about the unflinching charm and optimism of Daft Punk’s Discovery is too lovable to hate on too much. It’s so damn happy and unassumingly danceable that it doesn’t grate on me the way other albums like it have. Though previous Daft Punk records seemed hard to listen to, after all, they were really just a combination of samples that the duo would use in their live sets, they just made tracks out of them, yet Discovery seems the perfect record for a group of this genre so early on. The duo from Paris who hit the dance bullseye in Discovery by combining a variety of old-school styles with modern studio techniques and meticulous production. And who is ever going to forget this album with singles like “One More Time”, the anthem to any party that will just never end.

31. Muse – Black Holes And Revelations (2006)

Muse has cemented its legacy among the faithfuls of the rock genre with this effort. Riding on the coattails of Absolution’s stunning success, Black Holes And Revelations simply is a stellar gem from top to bottom. Opening the curtains for this album is “Take A Bow” which has a strong political message included in it. Screaming “Corrupt, you’re corrupt and bring corruption to all that you touch”, the song really tells what the band thinks about the present world. Closing the album is one of its released tracks “Knights of Cydonia”. Galloping horses, a spectacular guitar work, the song closes the album on a high note implanting in your head “No one’s going to take me alive“, it really seems fitting for anthem of the decade.

“British designer Fee Doran [made my feather inspired jacket]. She goes by Mrs. Jones, and she’s kind of an eccentric English woman who’s worked with people like Kylie Minogue and the Scissor Sisters.”

Ellen DeGeneres Show – November 17, 2009

You won’t believe the voice of 12-year-old RHAP SALAZAR. I saw a YouTube video of his singing and it blew me away. I’m flying him in all the way from the Philippines. Then, I’ve helped DWAYNE JOHNSON get over his fear of tarantulas, and last time we worked on his fear of roller coasters. When he’s here to talk about his new movie “Planet 51,” I’ll see if there’s anything else we can work on. Just call me Dr. Ellen. Also, with the amount that BRIAN WILLIAMS travels the world while hosting “NBC Nightly News,” I’m so happy that he’s taking the time to be on my show today. He is a funny guy and it’s always great to have him here. I hear he’s a fan of pranks, too. Will he still be a fan if the prank is on him? There’s only one way to find out! End of the year = listmania! Every self-respecting music publication will have a list of the best songs and/or albums of the year. Except this year they won’t; it’ll be the best of the decade.

I do really quite like the NME, but their list of the top 100 songs of the “noughties” (inverted commas because I absoultely hate the phrase) left me cold.

I could see their logic when it came to albums of the decade – The Strokes’s ‘Is This It? may not have been my favourite album of the past 10 years, but it’s a damn good one and it did give music a bit of a shake-up.

So, what’s NME’s best song of the decade?

No, I am not joking (how I wish I was!)

I don’t like this song. I accept that this is a subjective judgement – the “uh-oh” bit has never done anything but annoy me – but is this really the zenith of the world’s songwriting over the past 10 years?

Of course not; it’s a populist, all-permeating choice. Everyone will have heard of it, and it’s non-indie nature is somewhat akin to the NME saying “hey! Look at us! We don’t take ourselves too seriously!”

Everyone knows that the best pop song of the decade was this one:

The original version did clock in at number 16 on the NME chart, but still.

I couldn’t pick a song of the decade; I’m far too indecisive for that. I do, however, think that one of the best songs of the decade was this:

Even if just for the intro alone.

Or this one:

God, I miss The Long Blondes (despite their largely mediocre second album.)

But where were these on NME’s list? Nowhere, sadly.

Ok Ok. I know I said I’d wait till next week..but I couldn’t help myself. My palms aren’t sweaty, my smile hasn’t become bigger, my face isn’t flushed. VICTORY! Yes, this was after said crush’s phone call. It’s weird, I feel like I’m moving on, but I have double-check myself to make sure my heart is not pitter-pattering or wallowing in tears.

This feels good.

Sure in person it might be different, but it’s getting harder and harder to imagine your arms around me right before I sleep at night. Maybe cause I know it would never happen and has never happened. Whatever the reason, I am liking this. I no longer want to miss the days when I didn’t like anybody, when I was just happy being me.

Em comemoração ao grande show do dia 21/11/09, um wallpaper:

Vernissage em sessão de fotos com fãs após o show

Pessoal, aqui começa o relato do meu primeiro lamentável magnífico show da banda a qual participo. Sintam-se a vontade para rir.

Banda reunída, sexta-feira, 20 de novembro de 2009 à noite. Nosso show havia sido programado para começar às 21 horas, chegamos ao local e fomos conferir o espaço destinado para o palco (que na ocasião, era o topo da escadaria principal no meio do prédio) e reparamos que talvez a estrutura não fosse a ideal para um show do nosso porte. Até aí tudo bem. Surge-se de repente, o primeiro problema: A bateria de um mirofone (era até bonitinho, parecendo aqueles sem fio que a Xuxa usa) havia descarregado, então o nosso guitarrista, o de camisa azul na foto, foi junto com o baterista (o de camisa roxa) comprar uma bateria num supermercado próximo ao evento.

Na volta dos dois, descobrimos que a pessoa responsável pela bateria (o instrumento musical) não tinha chegado até o momento e que provavelmente poderíamos tocar até mesmo acústico caso o FDP não chegasse à tempo. Ironicamente, descobrimos que dentro de uma das bolsas, em meio à fios e etc, existia 6 baterias (de energia) devidamente cheias, ou seja, tornando desnecessário o trabalho dos músicos em ir comprar tal peça.

Alguns minutos depois, o FDP responsável pela bateria (o instrumento) chega com a devida para ser montada. Montamos a bateria e todo o palco (que incluia uma mesinha de som e duas caixas amplificadas). Começam-se a detectar os primeiros (?!) problemas: Com duas caixas, não teríamos retorno, ou seja, a banda tocaria eu olhando para a boca da vocalista, o guitarrista olhando para o braço do meu baixo e o baterista olhando para o braço da guitarra. Esse pseudo-problema foi resolvido colocando uma das caixas viradas para a gente, distante dos microfones.

Hora do show: 21 horas. Todos estávamos ansiosos, havia alguns estudantes de Letras próximos ao palco (afinal eles teriam que passar por aquela escada para saírem do prédio) e alguns de Filosofia também (iríamos tocar no prédio da universidade). A primeira preocupação nossa e do pessoal da produção do show foi que o evento que estava ocorrendo (que na ocasião era uma palestra de encerramento da Semana de Filosofia) estava bastante atrasado, e a gente não podia começar enquanto não terminasse o evento (pois iria atrapalhar a palestra). Resultado, começamos aproximadamente 21h30 por aí.

Nisso, o pessoal do curso de Letras quase todo na verdade, acho que todo mundo mesmo já tinha ido embora, restando umas 10 pessoas por lá, incluindo um professor e alguns amigos da banda (grazadêus, um deles me provendo alguns goles de sua cachaça). Banda preparada, setlist preparado, com 15 músicas (13 inéditas e 2 do primeiro CD para serem tocadas no encore)… Começamos a tocar \o/

O som estava com uma qualidade péssima razoável, a guitarra parecia reverbear e estar bastante atrasada em relação ao momento em que o guitarrista tocava nas cordas…. A única coisa que se ouvia direito era o baixo (que estava estourado nas notas mais graves – a caixa amlificada estava com defeito) e a voz que, por sinal, acabou ficando sem backing vocal, pois o microfone da Xuxa saiu de sena (eu tinha que fazer a piada, né?) já que o problema não era nas 6 baterias (nem na que compramos) e sim na porcaria do microfone defeituoso.

O show prosseguiu legal, as pessoas aplaudiram as músicas e tudo o mais. Até o exato momento em que, uns 20 minutos depois, durante uma das músicas mais calmas da banda, a pele da caixa da bateria misteriosamente estoura. Isso encurtou bastante nosso  show, pois com inúmeros uns probleminhas citados e mais esse, ficou difícil de tocar. O baterista com medo de lascar ainda mais a bateria, desistiu de tocar. O dono da bateria olhou meio que tristonho para a sua semi-danificada caixa (ele era o FDP, é que não sei o nome correto), mas o público clamava por mais músicas!!! IMPRESSIONANTE =]

Nisso, entra um rodízio de pessoas na bateria (incluindo um professor que disse que adora rock mas não gosta de Pink Floyd pois os teclados acabaram com o rock) e o próprio dono da bateria. Tocamos mais umas 3 músicas e encerramos com Ciganos, que vocês conferiram acústicamente mais abaixo em outro post.

Resumindo, tirando alguns FAILS que ocorreram, o show foi bastante divertido e acredito que nós 4 que formamos a banda e o público (umas 12 pessoas) gostaram muito. Show de início de carreira é assim mesmo… Até mesmo o The Killers se lascou no primeiro show:

A primeira apresentação do grupo foi feita em um clube chamado Tremorz. Foi horrível desde o início, devido ao fato de o clube não possuir nenhum sistema de som e também por um efeito que Brandon usava em sua voz para que ela ficasse semelhante à de Julian Casablancas (vocalista dos Strokes), efeito que falhou horrivelmente. Brandon desafinou muitas vezes e não possuía nenhuma presença de palco… (retirado da Wikipedia)

Ou seja, não foi tão ruim assim, estamos agendando um show para tocarmos num local mais específico para shows (que não seja universidade), que no caso acreditamos que vá ser no Bronx Bar aqui na cidade e aí teremos a oportunidade de receber mais gente e mostrar corretamente a nossa banda com todos os instrumentos funcionando direito ou não.

É isso aí pessoal, eu sou o baixista (o de camisa vermelha com uma cinza por cima – que inclusive é idêntica ao uniforme do Janitor da série Scrubs) da banda Vernissage e este foi o relato do meu primeiro show nesta banda. Eu gostei, apesar dos trancos e barrancos
