What better time to watch movies than Thanksgiving break?

Today I kicked back and watched The Kingdom. I’d seen this movie before, but at the time I’d been less politically aware and far less able to spot genuine acts of badassery. I wouldn’t say Jamie Foxx is the ultimate badass (because he doesn’t, at any point, say “yipee-ki-yay”) but I’d say he’s pretty close. When you have not one, but two “x”es in your name, then beat the shit out of a military officer in front of his whole squad for slapping your friend, “badass” is an unavoidable word.

Reading into it a little bit, the movie puts in quite a lot of cultural, political, and diplomatic dialogue. Not all of it is positive, but they’re definitely trying to go from boom boom pow action movie to “It’s an ugly world, here’s what might happen.” In my opinion, this is a must do for any action movie without massive robots that turn into cars that haven’t even come out yet.

The tension between almost all of the characters throughout the movie is almost palpable (though I’m sure many people would argue with me on this point) and the final scene is so far above and beyond my expectations that I was surprised again, even though I knew what would happen.

Though it’s definitely just a movie, The Kingdom somehow adds elements of surprise, plot, and character that make it feel like this could really happen. Just the right amount of spontaneity mixed with just the right amount of holy-shit-that-was-so-cool moments.

A must see, and one of the most underrated movies I’ve ever liked.

There was this poster that said Uncle Sam Wants You. It was a military recruiting poster for the Army. The poster and associated posters told the story about how Uncle Sam (our country) needed us for military service….for the war.

God has some stuff like that for us too. He needs us. Did you know that God has assignments for you and me. Things that He has set aside for us to get done. It is not that God can’t do them……well, He can’t because they are ours to do.

Ephesians 2:10 in the NIV says it this way. “We are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” God has stuff for us to do. He depends on us so much, he needs us so much, he wants us active so much that He prepared stuff for us to do. Not only that….but He prepared these things …. in advance, yes….you can bet well in advance….for us to do.

S0, we are coming up on Thanksgiving this week. I know I will be busy getting stuff ready for our big family gathering of the Mercers in Bunnell. I know you probably will to. Just understand that God Himself has prepared stuff for you and me to do….. He has, according to this scripture, prepared good works for us to do.

Take a pause this next few days and think about what good works have been prepared, in advance, for you to do…..and do them. Uncle Sam Wants You….God too.

When I was a young boy, I wanted a bicycle. I picked one out and my dad let me make payments to the owner of our local Western Auto Store…the at the time Walmart. I did not know that my dad and the owner of the store, Mr. Shields, had worked out a deal that I came in each week on what I made cutting lawns and delivering newspapers to pay off my bicycle….and Mr. Shields would give the money back to my dad because he had already paid for the bicycle…in full. It meant something to me but the deal was already made by my dad. And I found out when I was grown, that my dad, actually never took the money from me…he put it into a savings account for me….with interest. So I got more that what I put into it.

The people of Israel had been slaves for about 400 years and they were leaving slavery, getting out of Dodge. But, just out of the goodness of God’s heart, He had the Egyptians give the people of Israel gold and silver. This is recorded in Exodus 12:35-36.

You see, God has a plan for us to prosper. God has the wealth of the wicked stored up for us. He put what the people of Israel needed into a savings account for over 400 years. With Interest.

God has us covered. He has stored up what we need in Jesus Christ. Our health, our healing, our salvation, our life and it is in the bank for us. It is one of those odd concepts that we just can have what we need because God has our back. The scriptures in Psalms 68:19, says that God daily loads us with benefits. He has for us what we need…with interest.

My mom is the best cook in the world….I talked to her yesterday and she told me how to cook a specific thing….and she added that I needed to season the food…(fried pork chops) just so. Seasoning!

Just today….in one day…I had occasion to discuss with three men….by the way…three men of God…seasons in their lives. One is bigger than life, life of the party, big guy with a big heart. Orange flame shirt! Another is a family man, full of the prophetic, full of the anointing of God. Another, a man who knows the bible better than any human being I have ever met. A compendium of bible knowledge and memorization. They all three are going through different struggles, different hardships…different seasons. Seasoning.

Ecclesiastes 3 tells a story about the seasons in life. Times for things to occur in life. It is a story of contrasts…juxtapositions. Times that we all go through. Times that are green and times that are black. Times of life and times of death. Times of growth and times of pruning. Times of tears and times of laughter. All three of these men, stalwarts of the Gospel,….are in times of tears right now, times of mourning, of tearing down, times of war, times of searching, times of gathering. Seasoning.

What I want to say to you now…right now, is that if you are in a time of down, dark, searching….time of despair…that this may be a season in your life. The original language for season means an appointed time…Appointed by God…now, before you get your feathers wet…I do not think it is something God “causes” but something that God…well, uses…to season you. Now, I am struggling with this “sovereignty” thing and have switched thinking on it….but…God is above all this…He can use anything to … well, season us.

As we saw previously, there is an emphatic stamp when using “the” before a noun in Scripture. Consider that Jesus is not “a son of God”, but “the son of God”. There is a greater specificity when using “the”. God did not rest on “a seventh day”, He rested on the seventh day”. Much like the exegetical “law of first mention”, where the first time something is referenced in the Scripture is significant in setting the context by which every mention thereafter can be understood, we can learn a lot about the fine details of the Lord’s craftsmanship by the “filler” words in the Scriptures.

There are certain Scriptures that say things that if we take them for what they say, and realize the implications behind them, our current opinions on how things work would get violently confronted. John 1:1 is one of the Scriptures which has implications to it that are honestly kind of daunting. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” This verse first acknowledges that there was a beginning. That makes sense to us because we think about everything as having a beginning and end, limits where one things starts and another thing ends. Two objects cannot be in the same place at the same time. Thirty years ago I did not exist. Thirty months ago, my brother’s marriage didn’t exist. Thirty minutes ago, this sentence didn’t exist. All these things had a beginning.

However, the Word already existed in the beginning. Let’s say, just for arguments sake, that the Word existed exactly at the beginning of the beginning. The curious part about this comes when you look at the nature of words. Words have one purpose, to communicate. They come from someone and are intended for someone. So the Word proceeded from a Source that existed prior to the beginning. This means that the beginning was not really the beginning. But then, how far back does it go? The Source had to have a beginning, right? If you let your mind try to go back and back and back, it can get a little freaky. Realizing that God has been around for eternity past can trip a breaker in your head. Think about the wisest person you know. They are wise because they have either had more birthdays than you or because they have been through more wisdom-giving experiences than you. It is no wonder, then, that when we read Proverbs 8 about the personification of wisdom it sounds like the description of Jesus.

Out of His nature of Divine Wisdom as the Word, the Communication of God, Jesus was already reaching out to us to tell us Who the Father is and who we are to Him. He was crucified before the foundations of the World. His mind was already made up before wood, nails and whips existed. What do you do with Someone who is in no hurry because a millennium and a day feel the same to Him? He doesn’t get bored, He doesn’t get surprised or anxious. And what if this same Person took that eternal nature and stuffed it into us? What changes when we be content in every circumstance because we have no limitation of time because we have become like God, having His nature and likeness? I’ll tell you what changes, we become consciously eternal people that have a perspective that produces peace that doesn’t make sense. We become unoffendable, immoveable, immortal, and confident beyond understanding. Jesus said we are already clean by the Word He has spoken over us. Maybe our greatest need is to hear that Word echo out of eternity and into our innermost being.

*Word of God, reverberate within us and shake everything in us that can be shaken so that we can find discover that which will remain and live from there.

If the Father was willing to put His Name on the line by promising something, it is probably safe to

If the Father was willing to put His Name on the line by promising something, it is probably safe to say that whatever was promised will be fulfilled and that the fulfillment of that promise is worth being a part of. The First Covenant with Israel was directed towards a specific people group, God’s chosen people – from whom the Messiah would come. But the New Covenant was open to all people. Jesus blasted the doors wide open for every son of Adam to become a son of the Last Adam, thus becoming part of the Last human race. One benefit of the New Covenant is the Indwelling Spirit. This is not really even a benefit of the New Covenant, it is the New Covenant.

Without the Indwelling Spirit, we are without a transformation agent and therefore can not live free of sin, free in power, empowered by love or superimposed over death. It is Jesus’ Father who promised us the Spirit. It is Jesus who made a way for the Spirit to unite with our spirit. It is the Spirit who is the Seed that supernaturally re-incarnates us. Before you stop reading because I just said that we are re-incarnated, think about it. New Age understanding of re-incarnation is that we die and come back with the same spirit and soul, but as a different species. This is exactly what the Spirit does for us. We are baptized into His death and we are raised up with Him. We are resurrected into a new race of men, a race that never existed prior to Jesus.

Just yesterday I was telling a friend of mine that the difficulty in being a New Creation is that I forget to act out of my new nature. We don’t change physical form and almost nothing changes externally, the immediate change is internal and even deeper than the cellular level, so at first it is hard to live differently. When I was in college a friend of mine used to say, “It is not hard to be a New Creation, it is hard to stop acting like an Old Creation.” This is why it is important to be in community with people who are pursuing supernatural life, because in community we provoke each other even when we are not aware of it. If you compare two runners that run about the same speed on a mile, individually they will run a good mile when they are trying to get a good time. But if you put them next to each other and tell them to run a mile, even if you do not tell them to beat the other person or get a good time, they will run faster because they will both be trying to do a little better than the other. Community is an incubator of excellence.

In Luke 24, Jesus told the disciples to wait for the Promise of His Father. He told them to wait as a group for the Spirit to come upon them. If He had told them to individually go back to their homes and wait and then come together to discuss it, it is very likely that most of them would get impatient and distracted. But because there was 119 other people waiting for the same thing, though I’m sure it got awkward and some had doubts, those 120 people experienced something that changed the world.

It is interesting that Jesus called the Spirit the promise of the Father. It is as though the Spirit was the ultimate result that the Father had intended for us. He has promised may things, all of which He will do, but this was “the big one”. It is one thing to be a president of the United States, it is something altogether different to be the President of the United States. There is a present-tense nature to “the” that highlights the importance of what “the” is pointing at.

*Jesus, give us a love for the Presence of the Promise that will stir up a hungry addiction to You that will not be quenched or satisfied by anything but Your fulfillment. Amen.

I have a young guy that cuts my grass. He does the whole row of houses in our neighborhood. When I moved in a few years ago, he came to me on day one and told me not to buy a lawn mower that he would take care of me quicker and cheaper than I could….and that my place would look great. He was right.

I was late for work today. Had stuff pile up on me and just could not get it all together. Just a bummer day to get going. So, I am headed out and there is my yard guy. He is a good guy but is always going 100 mph around the yards. Never has time to talk…..but today he stops…because I am late for work….and wants to tell me about his sick mother…really sick.

I realize now why I was late for work. There in my yard, with a pressing need for to get to the “office” is a guy who needs to talk. It immediately reminded me of the cat who was jumped and needed help….but 2 guys walked by…too busy to stop and the last one stayed and helped the one in need. This is recorded in Luke 10.

In my yard, weedwacker in hand..surrounded by the smell of freshly cut grass…me late for work…..me and my yard man stood and prayed.

Now, if you have ever been in need,…like I have,.. like I am….to just have someone listen, to have someone care, to have someone pray for you; then you know what just a few minutes of prayer can do. It moves God and soothes man. Be watching out when you are late for work…someone might need you.

For a few days now, I’ve noticed one metochostouchristou commenting on a few posts—a very thoughtful blogger, I might add.

At any rate, I decided to check out his blog, and I really like his thoughts on What Is the Kingdom?:

Broadly speaking, the kingdom can be understood as God’s reign over creation (Psalm 103:19). In a more specific sense, however, the Scriptures speak of the kingdom as a type of new order established by God over all creation which he brings to his fallen world (Matthew 6:9-10; Hebrews 12:28).

Then,

In the fullest sense, the kingdom is the re-established and unchallenged reign of God over all creation (Matthew 6:9-10; Revelation 11:15). In a way, it is a return to Garden of Eden . . . only better. In this sense, the kingdom is yet future. It finds its fullest expression in the new heavens and new earth (2 Peter 3:13; Revelation 21:2).

He continues,

Yet the kingdom is not an entirely future reality. While the kingdom finds consummation in the age to come, it has broken into the present age because of the work of Christ and the power of the Spirit (Matthew 4:17; 12:28; the parables of Matthew 13; Luke 17:20-21; Romans 14:17). Those who believe in Christ are citizens of the kingdom because anyone who is in Christ has been made a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17; Colossians 1:13).

His conclusion:

So the kingdom can be spoken of as both present (particularly seen in the Church) and future (in the new heavens/new earth) . . . it is both now, and not yet.

Thanks Metochostouchristou for these thoughts on the Kingdom.

I believe you have already found your fine pearl.

“The Kingdom is God’s total answer to man’s total need.” - E. Stanley Jones

“The Kingdom is God’s total answer to man’s total need.”
- E. Stanley Jones

With each opportunity to teach the Kingdom I become increasingly convinced of two things: That the Kingdom is God’s answer to every human need, and that the church’s abandonment of the kingdom is the single greatest tragedy of modern times.

Is the problem poverty? The kingdom is the answer.

Is the problem crime? The kingdom is the answer.

Is the problem hopelessness? The Kingdom is the answer.

Is the problem greed? War? Racism? Broken families? Government corruption? The kingdom is the answer.

As long as the church holds forth the kingdom as the great plan of the ages, mankind has a hope, a plan, and a light to illuminate every problem. But when the church replaced “Thy kingdom come” with “Come quickly Lord” a vacuum ensued that sent history into chaos.

And nature, of course, abhors a vacuum. We abandoned kingdom hope and fell into despair. We abandoned kingdom compassion and opened the way to Marxism. We stepped away from the arts and funneled our gifts into self-entertainment, (“Christian concerts”, “Christian films”, and “Christian music”), to discover decency had fled our theaters and concert halls. We forgot the Kingdom call to steward nature and are reaping an environment that is strained and abused by consumerism and neglect. We deserted God’s government of the heart, (love, generosity, conscience, and personal responsibility), and inherited a behemoth state that strains to regulate everything from the words we use to the light bulbs we buy.

The way out of our mess is exactly as it was in Jesus day: to repent and embrace the kingdom, to seek the kingdom, to pray for the kingdom, and to make the kingdom our daily priority and pearl of great price.

I want to be the kind of person who gives God glory and honor through my actions. Sometimes this is something I know I need to do, and sometimes it’s something God SHOWS me I need to do.

I had the opportunity to hear Francis Chan speak this morning as part of the Torrey Conference. The thing about Chan’s talks is that they start, and then they wander, and then they come back and nail the original point, and you suddenly realize God worked the whole thing together. So his talk was about being a Christian for a long time, and really reading the Bible to understand what it says. And to then DO the things that it says, but not be surprised if everyone is surprised and disapproving when you do so. Because, basically, doing what the Bible says isn’t comfortable. Or safe. And frankly, it leads to suffering. Which seems wrong….

And yet, somehow, right. Especially if you really read the Bible to understand what it says.

And just now I wandered around in Lala.com and re-found Jason Gray’s latest album, and listened to his excellent song, Fade with Our Voices. Where the lyrics point out this same truth – if worship fades with our voices, then apparently we haven’t quite grasped what worship is.

After all the songs are sung
And our prayers for Kingdom come
Did we bring honor to the words we sing?

Does our worship have hands?
Does it have feet?
Does it stand up in the face of injustice?
Does our worship bow down?
Does it run deep?
Is it more than a song
That fades with our voices?
Does it fade with our voices?

Lord it’s you we long to please
Make our lives a melody
That we proclaim when we live in Jesus’ name

So I’m taking the hint. God, give me your spirit, so I can make my life a melody that I proclaim when I live by your name.

I finally had a chance to watch “The Kingdom”: One of the interesting movies I had been planning to watch for quite sometime. Kingdom’s story opens up with the terrorist attack at Western residential compound in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia claims many innocent lives. Terrorists in the movie are portrayed as misguided Al Qaeda Muslims who in the name of Allah used to target foreigners (mainly Americans) through gun shots and suicide bombings. While diplomats slowly debate equations of territorialism, FBI Special Agent Ronald Fleury (Jamie Foxx) quickly assembles an elite team (Chris Cooper, Jennifer Garner, Jason Bateman) and negotiates a secret five-day trip into Saudi Arabia to locate the mastermind behind the bombing. Upon landing into the modern yet traditional Riyadh the FBI team find Saudi Authorities suspicious and unwelcoming of the investigative agency as they called it a local matter however crew finds a like-minded partner in Saudi Colonel Al-Ghazi (Ashraf Barhoum), who helps them navigate royal politics and unlock the secrets of the crime scene.

In the end with these unlikely allies sharing a firm commitment to crack the case, the team is led to the killer’s front door.

On many occasions I tried to correlate this movie with the current situation of Pakistan where in the name of God terrorists carry out suicidal attacks that claim numerous innocent lives on almost daily basis but on ground unlike the movie no proper investigation takes place since Pakistani authorities are simply not determined to catch the big fish who high handedly roam around in our cities, the culture of joint investigation is also missing as our Govt has a rich history of raising and funding Jihadis. Followed by the recent wave of terrorism not even a single Madrassah or mosque has been raided where clerics openly incite masses with hateful sermons. This shows our commitment towards eradication of terrorism.

Earlier a particular situation led me into a deep shock when through a neo Mullah I got to know that the suicidal attack in Islamic University could be justified in a sense since exact Islamic teachings were not followed in that co education Islamic University of Islamabad which was funded by the US of A.

The nation where religious extremism running into its veins and the advocates of mass murderers being regarded as pious Muslims cannot prosper until it unanimously disowns black sheep within itself.

If you have gone up on a mountain, not driving the Blue Ridge Parkway,…but being up, going up a mountain, on foot, especially with a heavy pack or load…then you know it can be dangerous. Isaac, the son of Abraham, figured that out pretty quickly as he was going up the mountain with his dad, Abraham to worship God. … as Isaac had a pile of wood on his shoulders for a burnt offering..and no offering toburn…none…nada…not even a squirrel in tow. Looks like dangerous worship to me for Isaac!

Abraham, around 100 years old was with his son, Isaac, around 16 or so, and were going to worship the Lord on the mountain. An old father and a young strapping stong wood carrying son…his promised son. Father and son got on the side of the mountain and left the servants that helped them get there. Father and son kept going up the mountain and the son continued to ask, “where is the sacrifice”. Abraham said, God has it covered. The story completes itself with Isaac being strapped on the wood and Abraham going to sacrifice him…when God had it covered with an animal in a bush nearby.

Couple of thoughts about this sort of dangerous worship. First, you have to prepare, despite what you see with your eyes. No sacrifice apparent. Prepare the wood, the fire, the knife, the trip…all of it. Second, the way may be hard,…carrying wood and provisions up a mountain and no real resolution in sight. You may not want to go..maybe it is too hard, too inconvenient, to “not planned well enough”. Third, you prepare and work through any obstacles (call it overcome if you like) and the results are a closeness with, a conversation with, a togetherness with God as you obey.

You may be depressed,..like I seem to get sometimes, you may be in trouble, in debt, in a crack, in a slump, you may be going up a hill with wood on your shoulder and someone with you has a lighter and knife…try this. Be prepared to worship God. He may just be there waiting on you.

The Publix Trademark. I was at Publix this past weekend to stop by and get some stuff real quick. An obvious street person walked up to me really quick as I got out of my vehicle. She was disheveled, unkempt, unclean and was shaky from either drugs or alcohol. I have dealt with literally hundreds of people like this over the years. I have changed my attitude about this sort of person over the years also. It is sad to admit that there have been times that I would ridicule a person like this…but not for a long time. My buddy Mike Ellis has helped me learn how to minister to this segment of the world.

Exodus 20:15, the 8th Commandment says, “You shall not steal.” There have been times that I have stolen the dignity of a person like this because of how I felt about them. I have stolen the needs of a person like this because I felt it was my right to decide, to judge on how they should spend whatever it was that the Lord was telling me to give them. I have stolen and opportunity to share just the simple love of God through a kind word, a soft touch or a hug.

I gave this woman some money that I felt was what God wanted me to do…and knew she was going to buy drugs or alcohol. I gave her a hug and felt the bones in her back and ribs…..prayed for her as she would allow me….then my daughter and I watched as she went to McDonalds and got lunch…not booze, with what I had given her. You shall not steal. Had I disobeyed God in giving her something…I would have stolen her meal for that day. I am glad I did not disobey this time.

Actual analysis forthcoming, “The Kingdom” was a pretty awesome movie. You say racist?–let me rephrase that–Jack Shaheen says racist? Well doesn’t he always?

I actually think its a not insignificant thing to have a positive portrayal of both Arabs and muslims in a commercial and exciting political thriller, the genre where they are the most lacking. Plus, it’s nice to see both Ashraf Barhoum and ‘Ali Suleiman (although underutilized) of “Paradise Now” again.

Mostly though, I just like the fact that, reading through my notes from the movie, I see things like “Jason Bateman, FUCKING SHIT UP.”
