So many movies these days disappoint, I rarely look forward to seeing one. But I can hardly wait to

So many movies these days disappoint, I rarely look forward to seeing one. But I can hardly wait to see Pirate Radio!

It’s inspired by the true story of the British government (which still owns and operates the BBC or British Broadcasting Corporation) trying to ban rock’n’roll in the mid-sixties.

Bands like Cream, The Kinks and The Rolling Stones (and later, Pink Floyd, Genesis and Led Zeppelin) were viewed as subversive influences on teenagers, inciting them to rebellion.

An American DJ started broadcasting the banned bands from a ship just beyond the edge of Britain’s territorial waters. The rest is history and a promising premise for a movie.

Just as the internet has changed the way the world communicates and does business, rock’n’roll changed the world from its very beginnings.

And the changes weren’t only cultural. Many were technological.

Frank interviewed several on-air radio personalities and a media historian from Emerson College. Professor Donna Halper has actually been credited with having discovered the Canadian rock group, Rush!

She said Zeppelin, Floyd and Genesis would never have existed if FM radio hadn’t developed at the same time. In the ‘60s, Top 40 AM radio ruled. (The Beatles were often featured on the BBC’s programme, Top of the Pops).

But in the United States, the Federal Trade Commission was insisting that station owners develop separate formats for AM and FM or risk losing their licence.

The classical music being played on FM just wasn’t making money. The audience was too small. So the station owners went to the largest demographic, the Baby Boomers. They were in their teens and in college. What kind of music did they want to hear? Rock’n’roll!

Rock’n’roll’s musicians were lining up in opposite camps, just as radio itself was. The Beatles were among “The Mods”; The Stones, Pink Floyd and Zeppelin were among “The Rockers”.

Robert Godwin, another of Frank’s book interviewees, was attending boarding school in Britain at the time. He said fans of one type wouldn’t be caught dead in the same room as fans of the other! The example he cited compared those who liked Zep to fans of the Archies singing Sugar Sugar.

But as Bob Dylan observed, “the times they are a-changin’”.

As hot a band as Led Zeppelin was, in the mid 1970s, it too would become “uncool” when punk and new wave started in England. Even Robert Plant referred to Zep as “dinosaur rock” when he addressed their nevertheless adoring fans at Knebworth in August 1979.

If you’ve already seen Pirate Radio, write a post here and tell us what you thought!

PS – “Rockin’ in the Free World” is Neil Young’s actual song title, modified for this post title. You probably knew that, but we’re giving credit where it’s due. We love Neil, Rush AND Zep!

This past October when we were at Disney Hollywood Studios, my son went to the American Idol Experience as a guardian for his classmates who were all under the age of 18. They talked him and my daughter into trying out as well.
Zachary didn’t really want to do it and as it turned out he was the only one that got through both auditions to be on the show.
They do approximately six shows a day with three contestants on each show. They have a huge auditorium with a live host and live judges that give feedback. They have a finale show at the end of each day and the winner of that show gets a chance to go to the front of the line at any ‘real’ American Idol audition.
He sang “You Really Got Me” by The Kinks. Zachary didn’t win but it was a fun and enjoyable experience for all of us. I was very proud of him and also proud of my daughter who got through the first audition.
This is a photo I took of Zach on the big jumbo screen above the right of the stage.

punk rock and its different forms of offspring have saved music’s lazy ass more than once. wh

punk rock and its different forms of offspring have saved music’s lazy ass more than once. when 70s pop music was lost in the haze of am radio and the burgeoning disco scene, punk hit its stride with the bands we all recognize: the ramones, sex pistols, the clash, new york dolls, et al. when hair metal bands and bubble gum pop took over the radio waves in the late 80s, pop music was slapped around like a petulant bottom bitch by nirvana. unfortunately, there hasn’t been a punk based band since nirvana that has really made a difference in attitude and in the overall musical landscape. the contemporary to punk is alt folk and indie bands whose styles hardly reflect the raw, minimalist musical experience of punk music. with all due respect to grizzly bear, tv on the radio and arcade fire, and the thousand other indie bands and artists, what they give in terms of complexity with their re-definition of phil spector’s wall of sound, they lack in the musically spiritual rawness that is either poorly imitated (rise against, anti flag, nofx), or just plain phony (green day).

punk, at its rawness, is chaos. sometimes, it is beautifully constructed and controlled chaos. (the clash’s, london burning and the self titled album come to mind.) at times, it is just utter chaos and confused, bitter and sometimes hopeful emotional anarchy (such as early husker du, particularly the albums, land speed record and zen arcade). while no one band can claim the invention of punk, there were early bands that were evoked these spirits and punk was born as a bastard child from this unholy marriage.

case in point: the kinks. the early music of the progenitor of punk is raw, controlled, at times, deeply meaningless and based on the idea that the music they were influenced by and the music they emulated (to a point), didn’t have to be antiseptic. witness their performance of ‘you really got me now.’ the tight rawness of their simple chords, ray davies’ strained control, and this feeling that they just want to break the fucking walls down and how their potential for destruction are the elements from which punk got its spirit.

and i miss it…i miss the rawness in music. i miss the attitude that flirts with signing off with the middle finger. the kinks embraced this attitude, produced kick ass music, and helped pave the road to a culture that is now sorely missing.

Where on earth did November go? I thought I was sitting on it, but then I stood up and looked around, and it was totally gone. You guys, if you see November somewhere around here, please return it. I’m not ready for December – not in the least. So I’m cramming another mix into November. I hope you like it, but if you don’t, I guess you can stick it where November went.

1. Fleet Foxes – “Tiger Mountain Peasant Song”

A couple of shrill high school girls have managed to rack up a bunch of YouTube hits by covering this song with that gross fake Billie Holiday voice that aspiring indie girls have been using since they gave up on the Kelly Deal voice. That’s just mean spirited, James. Which is too bad, because this band and this song are so open hearted. It doesn’t matter if people in skinny jeans who don’t shower love this band, you’re allowed to love them too.

2. Bob Dylan – “Corrina, Corrina”

What else can you write about Bob Dylan? I think it might have all been said already.

3. The Byrds – “The Christian Life”

This is the version where Gram Parsons takes the lead vocal (I think). This is a Louvin Brothers tune, and no matter how you feel about the lyric (I think it’s endearing and sincere but difficult to identify with), the harmonies are great – those three notes that Roger (or whoever) is singing on “li-ii-iike” are my favorite.

4. The Band – “Rockin’ Chair”

More terrific harmony. If there was ever a band who could re-unite late in their careers and sound just as good if not better than they did back in the day, it’s The Band. They all sung like old guys when they were in their twenties. Sadly, mortality has intervened.

5. The Rolling Stones – “Torn and Frayed”

Exile on Main Street = An embarrassment of riches.

6. The Kinks – “David Watts”

No other band (besides the Jam, who covered this) could have written such a chugging, tuneful, piece of Englishness. Anglophiles, delight.

7. Richard Hell and the Voidoids – “Love Comes In Spurts”

From “Christian Life” to Richard Hell in four moves. Beat that, suckers.

8. XTC – “No Language In Our Lungs”

One of my favorites from Black Sea. Also really effectively used in an episode of Freaks and Geeks.

9. Elvis Costello and the Attractions – “New Lace Sleeves”

Dig into these lyrics. Writing this densely without losing the song is incredibly hard.

10. Squeeze – “Pulling Mussels (From The Shell)”

I’m not usually a big fan of greatest hits collections, but Singles 45’s and Under is the best way to experience the hooky joy that is Squeeze.

11. Marshall Crenshaw – “Mary Anne”

This is one of my all time favorite sing-alongs.

12. Big Star – “September Gurls”

See Bob Dylan. Too much has been written about Alex Chilton already. David Bowie wrote a song for Dylan. Westerburg wrote a song for Chilton. Let’s leave it alone.

13. Matthew Sweet – “Get Older”

I know two guys who still like Matthew Sweet, and aside from his (apparently huge) Japanese following, I think we might be the only ones.

14. Todd Rundgren – “Be Nice To Me”

Nothing wrong with a bit of weird adult-contemporary. Those piano chords at the beginning just sit right with me.

15. Rod Stewart – “Handbags and Gladrags”

Rod the Mod sings the theme to the greatest television show of all time. I’m not beyond hyperbole when Gervais and Merchant are involved. I am, however, when Rod Stewart is involved. But he does this one lovely, yeah?

16. Paul McCartney and Wings – “Mull of Kintyre”

My mum used to sing this one to me when I was a baby, so I’m biased towards it, even though it’s eminently corny. Bagpipes and all. Bring it on.

I recently became aware that there had been another band called Nirvana before Kurt Cobain´s 90´s grunge hype were potty trained. To my taste this was a musically a much more engaging band that Cobain´s band ever was or could be. Nirvana were a United Kingdom-based progressive rock band active in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Though the band only achieved limited commercial success, they were acclaimed both by music industry professionals and critics.[1] In 1985 the band reformed. The little commercial success they enjoyed was with “Rainbow Chaser”, a song they preformed live on French television in the 60s, and during the performance Saladore Dali threw paint on them, making their clothes worth a lot of money (if he had ever signed them).

In October 1967, they released their first album: a concept album produced by Blackwell titled The Story of Simon Simopath. The album was arguably the first narrative concept album ever released, predating story-driven concept albums such as The Pretty Things’ S.F. Sorrow (December 1968), The Who’s Tommy (April 1969) and The Kinks’ Arthur (September 1969).

I caught two interesting musical performances on tv recently that brought a smile to my face.

The real treat (for me anyway) was Ray Davies on David Letterman Wednesday Nov. 18. Now I really liked the Kinks in what seems like ages ago, but the Davies brothers Ray and David seemed to have trouble relating to each other over the years and the band had it’s share of meltdowns between various members. Still when they worked well they were pretty darn good.

Ray’s voice isn’t anywhere near what it used to be BUT he sang the 1964 single, “You Really Got Me” with the Crouch End Festival Chorus.
Quite outstanding. A different and enjoyable CD too.

The Kinks Choral Collection

The other performance was the Barry and Robin Gibb duet on Dancing with the Stars.
They harmonized to “You Should Be Dancing.”
And yes, maybe we all should be dancing!
Made me remember going to see a very young and very skinny John Travolta in the movie Saturday Night Fever. Good times.
Now let’s see who in the world did I go with…
Oh my God… it was… it was… my husband. Ha.

Wow, kinda like having a 60’s/70’s flashback… not unpleasant, just kinda odd. Ha.

Well worth searching You Tube for the clips of both but especially the Davies/Letterman clip!

G’night,

Director and writer Richard Curtis(“Notting Hill” and “Four Weddings and a Funeral

Director and writer Richard Curtis(“Notting Hill” and “Four Weddings and a Funeral”) brings to life the story of outlaw DJs who defied the British government for all that is worthy: drugs, sex and rock ‘n roll.

The government banished modern pop and rock ‘n roll from the mainland radio stations. Rock DJs took to the high seas to broadcast from ships docked in the North Sea. The film follows the fate of one pirate radio station called Radio Rock. They would play the most popular artists of the day: The Beatles, The Kinks, The Rolling Stones and The Yardbirds.

The story begins with Carl(Tom Sturridge) arriving on the Radio Rock ship because he had been expelled from his school for smoking cigarettes and marijuana. He claims his mother sent him there to try a different way of life with his Uncle Quentin(Bill Nighy). He meets a ragtag crew who DJs twenty-four hours a day from the ship, including the ship’s cook, Felicity(Katherine Parkinson), who plays a lesbian. Carl bunks with a man called Kevin, who is nicknamed Thick Kevin(Tom Brooke) because he doesn’t process information that quickly (Kevin wore an Easter bunny costume to Christmas dinner). This is a coming of age story for Carl who learns about rock ‘n roll and loses his virginity(while it was being broadcast live).

The station becomes threatened when the prudes at the BBC ban advertising on pirate radio stations become illegal. In response a legendary, sexy and feisty DJ named Gavin(Rhys Ifans) returns from the United States to draw in millions to listen to Radio Rock (It’s appropriate “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” by the Rolling Stones is used to introduce Gavin).

Eventually, the government deems it illegal for any ship to broadcast rock ‘n roll. Of course, Radio Rock defies the orders and continues to rock out. They try to make a getaway when the prime minister’s minion goes after them, but their engine blows up. The ship begins to sink into the North Sea.

The arrangement of cast members and intertwining of comedic episodes made this film very enduring. January Jones plays Elenore, a woman who pretends to love another DJ(Chris O’Dowd) so she can sleep with Gavin. And, another DJ named Midnight Mark claims his secret with the ladies is silence and one-liner “So, shall we get to it?”

The soundtrack which features major rock ‘n roll hits help the film’s appeal where it lacks fluidity.

I really enjoyed “Pirate Radio” and have seen it twice. Overall though, “Pirate Radio” has some truthful kernels about pirate radio off the coast of Great Britain, but in reality most of it is fictional.

Le puse demasiada fe, una montaña rusa que empezaba en The Royal Tenembaums, seguía The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou y finalizaba en The Darjeeling Linited.

**
[Francis y Peter están peliando]
Francis: You don’t love me!
Peter: Yes I do!
Jack: I love you too, but I’m gonna mace you in the face!
**
Jack: I wonder if the three of us would’ve been friends in real life. Not as brothers, but as people.
**
Rita: What’s wrong with you?
Jack: Let me think about that. I’ll tell you the next time I see you.
Rita: Okay, let’s do that
Jack: Thank you for using me
Rita: (suspiro entrecortado) You are welcome
**
Jack: Which direction did your’s go?
Francis: What do you mean?
Jack: Your feathers… mine blew toward the mountains
Francis: That’s not right. It’s not suppose to get blown away. You’re suppose to blow on it then bury it.
Peter: I didn’t get that. I still have mine.
Francis: You guys didn’t do it right. I asked if you read the instructions. You did it wrong… I tried my hardest. I don’t know what to do.
**
Francis: How did it get to this? Why haven’t we spoken in a year? Let’s make an agreement.
Peter: To do what?
Jack: Okay.
**
Francis: A: I want us be become brothers again like we used to be and for us to find ourselves and bond with each other. Can we agree to that?
Peter: Okay.
Peter: Yeah.
Francis: B. I want us to make this trip a spiritual journey where each of us seek the unknown, and we learn about it. Can we agree to that?
Jack: Sure.
Peter: I guess so.
Francis: C. I want us to be completely open and say yes to everything even if it’s shocking and painful. Can we agree to that?”

Watching an old episode of ‘Friends’ the other night – the one where Ross says the wrong name during his wedding to Emily - I was reminded of the night I played some songs in front of Jennifer Saunders. Jennifer’s daughter was playing that night too as it was an open mic night at a local bar. I was due to go on after her and it only dawned on me as I was checking my guitar was in tune over in a quiet corner that Jennifer was in the front row, having come to watch her daughter’s performance. She looked softer than her ‘Absolutely Fabulous’ persona and seemed to be enjoying the evening. When I stepped out onto the stage for my slot I tried not to stare directly at her as I knew it would make me feel nervous. I don’t know why, there was a time when I kept randomly bumping into celebrities. Then again, when it is random you don’t ever really get a chance to get used to the idea. I mean you can’t wonder around life think ‘Oh I’m Mr Planet, I bump into famous people.’ Not unless you want people to use the word ‘arrogant’ when they describe you.

But it is true that I’ve encountered celebrities in unexpected situations. Once I was heading to a band rehearsal and walking over a bridge in town. Coming the other way was a blond chap who seemed a little familiar. ‘He looks like David McCallum out of ‘The Man From U.N.C.L.E.’,’ I thought to myself as he drew nearer. “You’re David McCallum,” I suddenly said. “Yes I am,” he replied, “And who are you?” “Oh I’m just a bloke on the street hassling you,” I said, realising that it was really rather rude of me to just blurt out my thoughts at him. He extended his hand and said “Hello bloke on the street.” “Hello David McCallum.” He then pointed at my guitar case and said “You playing tonight?” “Rehearsing with my band,” I told him. “You any good?” he wanted to know. “I’m not bad.” He smiled and said “Well I’m not bad at acting so you never know.” And that was that. He had to go, I was late for rehearsal and I forgot to ask him the most important question which was, ‘What are you doing in this two-bit nowhere town I call home?’

Some years later, when I was at university, I was standing at the queue for the ATM with my son, who was probably about eight or nine years old at the time. There were two ATM machines and the guy alongside me in the other queue looked familiar. Oh my word, he was Dave Davies, guitar player of The Kinks, one of my favourite sixties bands. “Hello guitar man,” I said. He turned round and smiled and said something quite softly. I remembered as he spoke that he’d suffered a stroke a few years back so he might not want people bugging him on the street. So I just gave him the thumbs-up, which he returned. We both stepped forward to the cash machines at the same time and when he’d done he tapped me on the shoulder and said goodbye with another thumbs-up. “Who was that?” asked my son. “He was in a huge band in the sixties.” “Bigger than McFly?” he asked (for the Americans, McFly were the equivalent of the Jonas Brothers over here for a year or two). “Well sort of,” I replied, “But even bigger and much more talented.” “Cool.” And I had to agree, how very cool to just bump into Dave Davies while waiting to draw some money out of the bank.

In similar fashion I have met Donald Sutherland, David Suchet (who plays Poirot over here in the UK), Hugh Cornwell of The Stranglers, Tony Robinson (Baldrick from ‘Blackadder’), and several other minor celebs. But the famous person I refused to get excited about was a member of the royal family. It was my first year at university and I was walking down a corridor talking with a friend. My shoulder brushed against the shoulder of somebody coming the other way. “Sorry,” I said and carried on walking. My friend was agitated. “Oh my god! Do you know who that was?” “Nope,” I said, as I hadn’t even looked up. “That’s Peter Philips.” “Er, and he is?” “Princess Anne’s son. The Queen’s grandson.” I wondered what my friend expected me to do with this information. Run after Peter Philips and throw myself prostrate before him uttering profuse apologies? I grinned. “I doubt very much he’ll have me sent to the tower for brushing his shoulder, especially as I’ve said sorry. He probably likes being treated like a normal person anyway.” My friend still looked doubtful but, as my head was still attached to my shoulders, I assumed I was right and carried on walking.
