De trend is al een tijdje bezig, maar popmuziek met folkinvloeden wint terug aan populariteit de laatste maanden. Denk maar aan het succes van Bon Iver, Grizzly Bear of recenter Mumford & Sons. Mijn ontdekking van deze week wordt door muziekrecensenten omschreven als het Britse antwoord op Fleet Foxes. Da’s meteen een referentie die kan tellen, hoewel TLS toch ook een zeer eigen geluid heeft.

The Leisure Society, afkomstig uit de vruchtbare muzikale bodem van Brighton (Fatboy Slim, Blood Red Shoes, The Levellers, The Kooks) wordt door Elbow frontman Guy Garvey frequent genoemd als ‘the next big thing’. ’The Sleeper’ (met bonus-cd) is de ideale cd om zowel de herfst als de winter te overleven. Alle nummers ademen melancholie, weemoed en de groep bedient zich van een uitgebreid instrumentarium gaande van dwarsfluit tot viool.

Het is een cd geworden om liefdevol te omarmen en te koesteren. Luister naar single ‘The last of the melting snow’, ‘We were wasted’, ‘The darkest place I know’ of de inventieve cover van Gary Numan’s ‘Cars’ (op de bonus-cd). Bij ‘A matter of time’ loeren Arcade Fire en Beirut mee over hun schouder. Bij elke luisterbeurt ontdek je weer nieuwe dingen. Liefhebbers kunnen de bonus-cd integraal beluisteren als ze hier eens gaan kijken/luisteren. Ja, met deze schijfjes overbrug ik makkelijk de periode tot de lente terug in het land is. Geen herfst of winterdepressie voor mij dit jaar!

I have yet to meet a cover of this song that I don’t like. The Kooks sing an anglo-fied acoustic version of this MGMT classic, and do an amazing job. I just can’t get enough of it.

“Kids” is the third single from MGMT’s album Oracular Spectacular. It was released as a single on October 13, 2008.  Rolling Stone’s Kevin O’Donnell described the song as “a noisy New Order-style synth jam”.  The intro with kids screaming are actually altered sounds of adults.

YATM posted a Ben Lee cover of “Kids” via Shoot The Player (an Aussie Take Away Show out of Sydney) back in May of this year.

For the past several hours, I’ve been glued to the new Burberry trench-centric website, Art Of The Trench.

Scott Schuman (The Sartorialist) has collaborated with Burberry and shot men and women of all ages wearing the iconic Burberry trench in various cities across the world.  The result?  A website full of the chicest trench coat-wearers I’ve ever seen!

The Facebook-like site allows you to navigate through the images, share them, “like” them, and even comment on them.  It’s quite an exhilarating experience, let me tell you.

Oh and the best part?? The Kooks playing the background music.  Brilliant, I tell you.  Don’t tell my bf but that British accent gets me every time.

Right now, there is nothing I want more than to walk the streets of London or Paris, wearing a Burb trench.  But for now, this website will fill that void. Sigh.

Fran and Josh – Days Like These
For any avid MTV viewers out there you may recognise Fran and Josh from ‘hit’ TV show ‘Living on the Edge.’ Perhaps not the best way to make it as a credible recording artist, but hey, look at ‘Living on the Edge’ co-star Stephen Beard, making it as Archie in ‘Hollyoaks’. However, appearing in an MTV series is a good way to gain recognition and build up a fan base. These boys have had over 20,000 views on MySpace and recorded ‘Spanking New Sessions’ for MTV, following in the footsteps of Lady Gaga and White Lies, so it can’t all be bad.

Their sound is folksy with a Spanish flavour of guitars and what starts off as a slow, acoustic track, finishes off quite jingly, which as a welcomed surprise. These boys take you on a musical journey on this track, changing at every turn with their confident and accomplished approach – well done boys.

Shoot The Player is run by a Sydney duo who shoot videos of (mostly) local Aussie acts performing in various areas around the city. Artists include Dead Letter Chorus, An Horse, Sarah Blasko, Kaki King, Port O’Brien, Vivian Girls, Andrew Bird, Amanda Palmer and more. It’s a fantastic site, and the films they make are high quality snapshots of artists performing in a casual setting, giving them a really personal feel.

The above Shoot The Player video is Ben Lee performing his version of MGMT’s ‘Kids’ in Rushcutter’s Bay Park, Sydney. Don’t expect to hear anything like the original though – Ben’s simple delivery gives it a totally different feel and while I like MGMT’s version, in many ways his cover is better because he gives it his own spin without diverting too far away from the original. I also like how the people in the park just go about their business, as if seeing Ben Lee wandering along playing his guitar is a normal everyday occurence.

Para tu información este fin de semana no he hecho absolutamente nada. Ni party, ni Halloween ni hostias. Todo el mundo enfermo, otros encerrados en casa y el único que se quería pirar por ahí era YO!. Y como no iba a ir solo por ahí pues me quedé en casa tirándome huevos a mi propia ventana… (Que guay por cierto, intentarlo vosotros =) ) Y hoy domingo había que quedarse en casa estudiando filosofía…
Pero al tema, el viernes, tuvimos otra clase de inglés (conversación) y como el profesor suele ponernos algo para hacernos las clases más amenas, nos puso la canción de arriba. =) Oh la! Tiene bonita letra por cierto.

First of all, I’ve done nothing this weekend. No party, No Halloween, no anything. Everyone was sick, another ones were locked in their house (Afraid from Halloween maybe?) and the only one who wanted party was me. So I end up throwing eggs in my own window (yes, it’s cool, do you want try it?) And today I have to stay at home studying filosophy, tomorrow I’ve got an exam.
Btw , on this Friday’s class, because our teacher wants to make us happy, he played a song called Oh la with the cd player (thanks to a classmate).
And the songs lyrics are cool.

det som i teorien skulle være en dag fylt med lekser og pugging, blei til en dag fylt med kake, brus, kaffe og ballonger. jeg hadde nemlig helt glemt at lillebror skulle feire åtte års dagen sin idag, og ikke i morgen da han faktisk har bursdag. derfor er det først nå at jeg får lest mer til spansk prøven i morgen. ikke helt heldig, men det skal da gå på én eller annen måte.

jeg sitter i stua hjemme og hører på the Kooks og leser spansk nå. mamma er ned på klubbhuset og har barneselskap for lillegutt. jeg hjalp til med å lage til, og vi hadde familie selskap først, men jeg er nødt til å få lest litt til prøva også. jeg har attpå til flere tonn med skittentøy som må vaskes før jeg reiser inn igjen på hybelen min. helgene går så alt for fort, den skulle bestått av hele tre dager fri og ikke bare to og en halv. jeg skulle så gjerne innført en åtte dagers uke; der den åttende dagen, dagen før mandag, skulle het sovedag eller daffdag. jeg er jo klar over at søndag er kviledag, men for meg er den bare stress; klær som må vaskes, tørkes, pakkes, buss, lekse, hybel. det gjør at helgen blir alt for fort over. og det er ikke greit i det hele tatt.

jeg har egentlig ikke så mye tid å skrive på nå, om en halvtime skal jeg ned igjen på klubbhuset og hjelpe mamma og rydde opp etter tolv rabiate små åtte åringer. okei da, så er de litt søte, men de har en lunge kapasitet som forundrer meg like mye hver gang. hyling, skriking, leke-slossing. det nærmeste jeg kommer til å bli mamma er vel om jeg får meg en katt eller eventuelt en hund. jeg har ikke tolmodighet til barn, blir stressa av ingenting. noe som kan komme av at jeg har latterlig mange små-søsken også. jeg får vel avslutte nå, dagens band er the Kooks, hør på dem!

a day that in theory was supposed to be filled with homework and studying, ended up being a day filled with cakes, soda, coffee and balloons. i had of course forgotten that we were celebrating my little brother´s eight birthday today, in stead of tomorrow which is his real birthday. because of that miscalculation it isn´t until now that i am actually sitting down studying for my spanish test tomorrow. not really an ideal situation, but i´ll manage, one way or the other.

i am sitting alone in the living room at home, listening to the Kooks and reading spanish. mum is down at the Flatraket club-house, where we are hosting the birthday party for the little fellah. i helped her set it up, and i was there during the family party, but since i do have a VERY important test tomorrow, i had to get home to study for it. the weekends tend to just fly me by, it should three days off and not a lousy two and a half. i would love to enforce an eight day week, where the eight day, the day before monday, would be called sleepyday or perhaps slacker´s day. i am aware that sunday is called the day of rest, but to me it is merely the day of stress. laundry that have to be done, packing, bus, studying, my flat. it makes the weekend end all to quickly. and that is not ok at all.

i haven´t really got that much time to blog right now, i have to be down at the club-house in half an hour to help mum clean up after twelve eight year old boys on a sugar kick. okay, so they are a little cute, but they have also got a lung capacity that never stops to marvel me. they shout and scream and have play-fights. i suppose the closest i´ll ever be to being a mum is if i ever get a cat or maybe a dog. i have absolutely no patience for children, the stress me out just by doing nothing. which may be a direct result of the fact that i have ridiculously many younger siblings… i should end this post now, the band of the day is the Kooks, listen to them!

bah! youtube is apparently down for maintenance, which basically means i don´t get to link to all the other great songs i want to post on this post. stupid youtube ruining my plan! anywhoo, the songs i wanted to post were all by the Kooks (of course); Brooklyn, She moves in her own way, princess blue and one more, but i seem to have forgotten the name of it. go to youtube, and if youtube works for you then listen to those songs, you will not regret it!!

Aber das liegt nur daran, dass ich momentan sehr viel neue und sehr sehr coole Musik entdecke. Von manchen Songs gibt es leider keinen Videoclip aber das macht sie auf keinen Fall schlechter. Grandes influenciadores reinam nesta nova fase de minha vida. Fazer jornalismo está sendo muito bom por vários motivos. Além de ter novas visões, gostos e ares para respirar, ganho amigos que alimentam tudo isso. Hoje, como quem não quer nada, Léo, amigo de escritório, acostumado a dar boas dicas, seja livro, filme ou música, apareceu com um CD da banda The Kooks.

Ele parece ser super fã de bandas ‘indie’ e tal, fazendo com que eu siga o mesmo caminho. Não, não me falta opinião própria, como diz uma amiga chata, também do escritório, mas é que ‘indie’ realmente é muito bom de ouvir. Parece que levanta o astral da alma. Claro, vai de banda para banda. Às vezes fico pensando que ser jornalista é ter um gosto diferente de tudo. Estilo de se vestir, de viver e tudo mais.

Bom, não saindo da estrada, para esta sexta-feira, só queria dizer que The Kooks é a melhor banda de todos os tempos da última semana em meu Ipod. Abaixo o vídeo clipe da música Shine On, que me fez pagar um pau.
