Only recently did I have the wonderful chance to squeeze in the documentary, Valentino: The Last Emperor that came out sometime this year (?). It was really inspiring, riveting, a learning experience, and most of all, it made me sad, angry, upset. While I loved how they filmed the amount of work that goes into one couture gown (all hand-sewn by meticulous seamstresses), and the creative process of draping, cutting, and endless drive for perfection, its upsetting that a designer as big as Valentino, with a 50-year career no less, unfortunately had to succumb to the pressures of commerce and industry. This was filmed in 2008– prior to Wall St. failing (causing doom that reverberated around the globe, as we all know). At the time, there was this unexplained need to consume, like some mythical cyclops who eats and eats but never feels satisfied.

Valentino has dressed everyone, movie stars, princesses, socialites, and mere mortals could only be so lucky to see it in the pages of a glossy. Everyone who doesn’t work in the fashion industry or not regular customers, for that matter, could never understand how creations by such designers cost so much. In the documentary, if you watch carefully, it explains it. Aside from the fact that it is made by artisans, using the best materials, amazing techniques, original designs, it is also a chance to own a piece of art, to have an electrifying, out -of-body experience. Of course, not everyone has this luxury, so we sit back, and admire and be in awe of greatness.

I suppose this was always the case, for true artists, throughout the milieu: in order to create and experiment, the artist has to have a patron who will take care of them. Many masters– during the Renaissance, Modern, Contemporary– has been documented to have to produce something less than what they are truly capable of, to make ends meet. Doesn’t that still ring true today? But I suppose a designer with so much success and accolades such as Valentino, in the documentary, its baffling to him to create something less than perfection, just so he can sell more handbags or shoes. The designer Marc Jacobs once said, that early in his career, when he won the Perry Ellis award for Best New Designer, he did not have any money. He was getting all this press, all these rave reviews for his Grunge look (its hard to forget, it defined a generation, after all), but unless he builds a store or sells enough clothes, he cannot keep designing, keep making clothes we dream about or we dream in. That’s the moral of the story, I suppose, watching this documentary. Even a giant falls.

Produced and directed by Matt Tyrnauer, a writer of Vanity Fair, Valentino the Last Emperor, formula

Produced and directed by Matt Tyrnauer, a writer of Vanity Fair, Valentino the Last Emperor, formulates the portrait of the man behind the legendary couture label, Valentino and his fifty-year relationship with Giancarlo Giammetti, his business partner, lover, best friend and confidante.

The film covers the run-up to Valentino’s retirement mid-way through 2007 and Tyrnauer, spends the best part of two years following him and Giammetti with his camera, so we float around with them in the scented bubble that constitutes their world. And there’s an elegiac element here, as Valentino is the last of the la dolce vita lions, a man of authentic couture somewhat out of time in an era of mass-produced “high fashion.”

And I couldn’t agree more with Giammetti when I read his interview to Cathy Horyn of The New York Times (especially this part):

C.H:“The structure is so different today. Designers are really employees of large companies. They’re well compensated, but they don’t have what you and Giorgio Armani and Saint Laurent have. They’re part of a machine. If they don’t perform, they could be fired. I wonder what this means for the atmosphere of fashion, the creativity.”

G.G:”It’s a different game today. Probably the designers are spoiled too much. They don’t have time to grow and develop an identity so they can last. We have three times more houses that need designers than good designers who are available. And the press makes them idols in a second. We had the chance, Valentino and I, to grow. To go step by step…”

The struggle of art against commerce is at the center of the film. In the end, however, the story proves to be not one about money or expensive clothes, the vanities of the present, but about love.

I chose to stay at Mövenpick – a nice looking 4 star hotel with several restaurants offering European cuisine. It’s not that there is something wrong with Chinese cuisine, but I discovered that there were many different types of Chinese cuisine depending on the region.

It appeared that the one known in Europe is not the same as the one in Beijing. In Beijing they use a different type of soya sauce which is quite sweet. Luckily, you can always find some Stella Artois to make your life easier.

night skyline across beijing city

There are many things to be seen around Beijing: The Temple of Heaven where the emperors used to prey; many Buddhist temples; the Beihai park - full of extraordinary flowers and plants; the Forbidden city, of course.

Do you remember “The Last Emperor”? The summer palace of empress Tz’u-hsi is very impressive. Tz’u-hsi was maybe the cruelest woman emperor in all times but also one of the most powerful. Her story is very intriguing.

Amongst the many places, undoubtedly the most spectacular is the Great Wall. Needless to say it is full of tourists. I was surprised to find out that it looked exactly like on the ancient paintings I’ve seen. It is winding along the mountain ridges, intangible, unthinkable, unending. Longer than you could imagine.

The Great Wall of China

It stays there as a monument of some clever defense plan or of some megalomaniac ambition. I don’t know which one of the two. The wall is something you must see at least once. I can’t help but remember that beautiful song of Bob Dylan:

“Then take me disappearin’ through the smoke rings of my mind,

Down the foggy ruins of time, far past the frozen leaves,

The haunted, frightened trees, out to the windy beach,

Far from the twisted reach of crazy sorrow.

…

Let me forget about today until tomorrow”

Dieci.

Last Saturday, the world was able to witness heavyweight champion, Fedor Emelianenko, battle Brett R

Last Saturday, the world was able to witness heavyweight champion, Fedor Emelianenko, battle Brett Rogers at the Strikeforce event shown free on CBS. Brett “the Grim” Rogers is known for his size and strength, having the upperhand in both weight and reach in this fight, but lacking the experience. Fedor, arguably the greatest MMA fighter of all time, drew in a sold out crowd that was on its feet for the entire bout.

Rogers landed first with a jab that seemed harmless but actually broke Fedor’s nose. The blood streamed down his face, but true to his legendary nature, Fedor remained calm and operated robotically waiting for his chance to take Rogers apart. That chance came in the second round, when Fedor found an opening for a lead right hand that dropped “the Grim” to the mat, electrifying the crowd and silencing any haters (for a moment at least).

Rogers proved that he deserved this title shot and even had a glimpse of victory while pummeling Fedor on the ground late in the first round. Fedor quickly transitioned to an armbar submission attempt, which stopped the blows. In the post-fight interview, Fedor said that he was never in danger and the broken nose did not bother him.

Most of the time, that would be a fighter’s pride speaking. But the enigma here, as Fedor is often referred to, is that Fedor is truly a modest man. His nicknames “The Last Emperor” and the “Baddest Man on the Planet” are befitting a man with his reputation and legacy, but not his personality. Inside the cage, he acts like he’s at another day in the office. After the huge knockout, Fedor barely raised a fist in victory. Outside of the cage, Fedor is humble and good-humored, always showing respect for his opponents and appearing (dare I say) cute.

So I’d like to dedicate this post to Fedor for being a great fighter and a great man. If you see him in any of his fights, a documentary of his training, or even on comedic variety shows around the world, it’s impossible not to like this guy. For a man who’s been referred to as a cyborg and machine, he’s got one heck of a smile.

I'd call him "the Big Teddy Bear"

O resultado explica. Baseado na obra infantil de Maurice Sedack de 1963 que virou livro clássico mesmo após as criticas de conservadores da época, Where The Wild Things Are é simples e complexo ao mesmo tempo. A trilha é outro show a parte.

A bela atriz romena Medeea Marinescu ajuda a deixar o filme bem simpático.

Here’s a project that flew under my radar until today. Now, I’ve got my eyes and (more importantly) ears on it.

Last Emperor, in my opinion one of the most creative and underappreciated MC’s, recently dropped Science Team… Go! available for free-99 at your local e-bodega, including this one.

Mixed by The Bash Bros (DJ Mickey Knox & DJ Concept), it’s a collection of tracks released over the past couple years by the Philly MC including the highly-praised “Secret Wars 2″ that pits a new group of comic book characters against rappers for ultimate universal supremacy.

Head over to TheLastEmp.com to buy a physical copy, which comes with a T-shirt, poster and bonus disc of live performance audio and rare collabos.

Thanks to Grand Good for the heads up and Freestyle Madness for the link, Enjoy!

* indicates movies watched instantly

The Field (1990) - 7/10 – The second film of Jim Sheridan (My Left Foot) about an unrelenting farmer who covets a field his family has farmed for generations, but does not actually own. In swoops a wealthy American (Tom Berenger) who wants to buy the field and create a highway. Things go horribly wrong when they confront the man.

Super High Me (2007)* - 7/10 – Doug Benson’s take on Morgan Spurlock’s Super Size Me, where first he goes 30 days sober and then goes 30 days smoking weed every day. Its a mostly harmless, somewhat amusing documentary about Doug and his standup until the last 15 minutes where it becomes kind of a proponent for a state’s right to legally have medical marijuana shops (shown to footage of various ones being raided by the DEA). There are several cameos from Benson’s comedian friends, such as Zach Galifianakis, Patton Oswalt, Bob Odenkirk, and Sarah Silverman.

The Last Emperor (1987) – 7/10 - Bernardo Bertulucci’s epic story about the Pu Yi, the child emperor from 1908 until the Chinese revolution in 1911 when he had to abdicate. It won 9 Oscars (every one it was nominated for), and was the first film to receive permission to film in the Forbidden City. Beautifully shot and mostly interesting, but a bit long at 163 minutes.

The Karate Kid (1984)* – 7/10 – Probably the first time I’ve actually watched the whole movie start to finish, in preparation of my Mr. Miyagi costume for Halloween this year. Other than that, it’s The Karate Kid, not much more I can say. Elisabeth Shue was super cute.

Taken (2008) – 8/10 – Qui-Gon goes ape shit on a bunch of terrorists who kidnapped his daughter. Like a boss.

Twilight (2008) – 5/10 – Decided to see what all the fuss was about after I enjoyed Kristen Stewart’s performance in Adventureland. It was what I thought it would be. Decent soundtrack.

Currently have out:
Sugar (2008)
The Girlfriend Experience (2009)
Michael Clayton (2007)

There is nothing like being in with the coolest crowd in school, and to actually being considered cool yourself is almost as unthinkable as Selena Gomez becoming the new Hannah Montana. But nothing is impossible. Still, for this to happen you should have some kind of knowledge of fashion. Or at least clothes. Preferably drop dead gorgeous clothes . This is why the movie “Valentino, The Last Emperor” comes in handy. A movie that is two thirds fashion, one third italian fury and a whole lot of fun. Finally you will have something to talk about with those” it” girls in school that you have never seemed to been able to hold a conversation with before. For instance initiating a convo with how totally awesome those silk chiffon beaded dresses were or mentioning how much you would just die if you met Mr Valentino himself would completely get the talk going. Because lets be honest, the likeliness of the cool chick even haven heard of Valentino is slim, most likely she is still obsessed with Charlotte Ronson which we all know is sooo last week. So this is the time for you shine and bring something new to the table, believe me it will create a total o.m.g. moment.

Who knew a film about such an old guy, wearing way too much fake tan guy might I add, could result in such an entertaining film is beyond me but seriously; this is a witty, beautiful, delightful and last but not least fashionable movie that just simply has to be on your must see list. Quite possibly you will also catch a glimpse of some hot italian men lurking in the background, believe me, they are there!

Seeing grown men bitch to one another to then break out into tears; hilarious. Seeing the coolest girl in class getting schooled by you in fashion related subjects: priceless. You: One point. Cool girls: Zero.

The documentary movie Valentino the last emperor tells us about the daily life of the legendary fashion designer and behind the scenes story. Beautiful gowns, skinny models, dreamy stage decoration, wealthy lives, probably these are the words left for us after viewing the film. The film shows the most glamorous lifestyle you could ever imagine, private jet, lavish dinner and private parties, even Valentino’s five puppies can be specially treated like human being by lining up on the leather seats in the private jet. The lifestyle seems only happening in another planet. Perhaps, after watching the film, many of you want to be fashion designers when you grew up, however Rome doesn’t build in one day and success doesn’t come easily, to be a fashion designer doesn’t as simple as you saw in the film and which takes lots of efforts.

Valentino with celebrities, models, the pic sourcing from www.torybunch.com

Pugs, Valentino's pets, pic sourcing from www.valentinomovie.com

In the film, it features young Valentino and how he got started. It took him 45 years to build up his fashion emperor and he started up as a couturier from the bottom line and then worked his way up to become super famous after designing the wedding dress for Jacqueline Kennedy. It was fascinated about his strong determination and passion about fashion, coming from such a young man. He always wants to be a fashion designer and all he wants is to make beautiful for women, claimed by him in the film. He never loses sight of why he does what he does, even in the midst of the death of couture. The documentary movie also captures some spontaneous and dramatic moments such as he couldn’t control his temper before the show and yelled at the cameraman, this also shows the perfectionism and diva side of Valentino. He simple wants to make sure that his work is resented in the best way possible.

Young Valentino, pic sourcing form TASCHEN Books

Fabulous lifestyle of Valentino with models, pic sourcing from valentinomovie.com

The relationship between Valentino and his best friend, business partner Giancario is also at the center of the film. They’ve worked together forever and almost never been apart for each other. The complex mix of this duo had built their fashion emperor.

<img class="size-full wp-image-62" title="Valentino with Giancarlo Giammetti in Giammetti’s office at the Palazzo Mignanelli, in Rome, on May 26, 2004.
The film is definitely worth to watch twice in that not only it is a fresh look at Valentino as a couture designer and a behind-the –scene look at the truth of the fashion industry, it shows us the elements that are driven people succeed- simply follow your dream and keep doing it.

Tan man and his infamous red And get this: I was cracking up non-stop. I mean, I knew the film would

Tan man and his infamous red

And get this: I was cracking up non-stop. I mean, I knew the film would be charming, but…all I can say is that Karl Lagerfeld is my new favorite comedian, for REAL. I mean…the man is…he’s just…oh-mazing. Not to say that Valentino isn’t hysterical by himself—because he is. In fact, he sort of reminds me of my own 4-foot-eleven-particular-to-the-point-of-infuriation-Italian grandmother (God rest her blessed heart) in many ways. By far my favorite scene in the film is where we see Karl take buddy V to the side after his awe-inspiring retrospective, and purrs, “Compared to us, the rest are making rags.” INCREDIBLE. What is it about the mere utterance of the word “rags” from Lagerfeld’s bodacious lips that makes me want to slap my knee in ecstasy?! I think I have problems.

BFF

Generally speaking, the film was solid. I would recommend it to anyone who is remotely interested in fashion, of course, but also to anyone who wants an endearing look at a seemingly untouchable fashion powerhouse. The doc really is cute, and I sort of hate that word as an adjective, in theory, but it really is…cute! And when I think of a come-hither Valentino masterpiece gown, “cute” is the last word on my mind. Maybe that’s why I liked the film so much? Valentino is exactly what you’d expect him to be (bossy, narcissistic, impossible…), yet he also takes you by surprise in this doc…in many ways. I think I also liked the film because it was not hell-bent on featuring celebrity cameos and label whoring either. Clearly, V’s long-time life partner Paul Giamatti is the integral tour de force behind…well, the tour de farce himself. That was 25 percent cruel, yes, but inevitably, I think I actually love V even more for some of the hysterical buffoonery displayed in this film. Like I said…it’s charming. Endearing. WTF.

But really, behind the clout of the Valentino name is not only Giamatti (who clearly loves this nutty little tan man unconditionally, in *every* sense of the word), but Valentino’s countless seamstresses, without whom nothing would be possible. These women. Are amazing. The head seamstress barking displeasure in Italian is just one of the many scenes that brought about, yet again, that charmed smirk on my face. One of the many.

Valentino, the last emperor of fashion? This film makes a decent case for such a bold statement. But an emperor he was. They really don’t make em like Valentino anymore, they just don’t.

Elegance is the balance between proportion, emotion, and surprise. –Valentino Garavani

Being the sibling of a celebrity is never easy, and pianist Kwon Soon-hwon too is perhaps better kno

Being the sibling of a celebrity is never easy, and pianist Kwon Soon-hwon too is perhaps better known as the elder brother of K-pop megastar BoA, rather than a musician in his own right. But giving his first concert, “Kwon Soon-hwon’s Easy Classic” this summer, he ventures forth under his steam after appearing as a guest at his sister’s fan meeting event in 2002.

“Whenever I forget to say hi to someone, or have an argument with other people, I am seen as rude,” he says. “It’s okay when such criticism is directed at me only, but when it goes beyond that to hurt my sister and my family, it’s difficult to take.”

Kwon set up digital music label called Neo Musica last year and has been working as a producer as well as a pianist. His music is distributed only online, but there it is popular, with his playing of Beethoven and Chopin ranked high in the classical music section of popular music streaming sites such as Bugs Music and Melon.

“When I learn how to drive, I start with a small car instead of an expensive imported car, and likewise I wanted to introduce an easy and accessible way to learn classical music, rather than picking difficult pieces,” he says.

In the upcoming “Easy Classic” concert, Kwon’s will play his own arrangements, and he will also offer a commentary to help the audience understand the music better. A dance troupe will dance to Igor Stravinsky’s “Petrushka,” and even some orchestral music recorded in advance will be played, something that has been taboo in the classical music world.

Kwon says his role model is Ryuichi Sakamoto, who composed the original soundtrack for “The Last Emperor” and also works as an actor and model.
