Years of hard work are coming to fruition for explorer Jim McNeill who has been heavily involved in the hit Frozen Planet series as well as the soon to be aired The Last Explorers series. The Last Explorers series charts the exploits of long forgotten explorers including McNeill’s hero, William Speirs Bruce who is one of the least-known of the early explorers such as Livingstone, who risked their lives stepping into the unknown. Bruce set out to conquer Antarctica, not for imperial glory, but to advance scientific knowledge in an era when exploration had become harnessed to national prestige. Now, generations later, Jim McNeill runs The Ice-Warrior Project expeditions with similar ethics and ambitions. “Speirs was a prolific explorer at the same time as Shackleton and Scott but never recognised. Like other shows I work with, I trained the team and took them to the Antarctic. It was a pleasure to be involved in a story about a man who I have long admired. He was an unsung hero and I am very pleased his story is finally being told and I have had a part to play in telling it.” Unlike other shows, Windsor based expedition leader, Jim McNeill appears in front of camera talking about his hero. In other shows such as Frozen Planet, he takes a back seat, handling the logistics, safety, expedition training and kitting out the crews, alongside finding rare species and introducing them to local inhabitants. The 50-year-old who runs Ice-Warrior Project (www.ice-warrior.com) has over 25 years of experience travelling in the Arctic in particular as well as jungles and deserts. Apart from work with film crews, his expeditions, provide regular opportunities to monitor polar bear populations for the Norwegian Polar Institute, as well as putting together a yearly scientific program for scientists to monitor the effects of climate change. He is an ambassador for Hauser Bears, a charitable organization committed to the conservation of bears worldwide and is Vice president with the Arctic Expeditions for Sea Research Society. He has endured many hardships and dangers on his journeys and faced global warming full on when sea ice disintegrated unexpectedly in one of his attempts to reach the last yet to be explored region of the polar regions – the Pole of Inaccessibility. This is a destination he hopes to conquer and explore for its unique scientific data despite putting his life on the line for it previously. “This is what explorers do. We enjoy the challenges and take on nature in the raw. It is dangerous and exciting but it is also thrilling to introduce ordinary people to extraordinary things and take part in what I call, Citizen Science.” The Last Explorers, presented by archaeologist and writer, Neil Oliver are three programmes charting the exploits of Livingstone, William Speir andJohn Muir. They have already been aired in Scotland and can be viewed on iplayer and will be screened nationally soon.

 I will keep you posted

It’s one of the great untold stories. I worked up the outline for this programme directed by Colin Murray.

Episode 2 of 4

Duration: 1 hour

Neil Oliver re-traces the expeditions of four Scottish explorers who planted ideas rather than flags – ideas that shaped the modern world we know today. Following in the footsteps of a scientific explorer who has become all but lost to history, Neil charts the remarkable story of William Speirs Bruce, one of Britain’s great, but least-known explorers. Bruce set out to conquer Antarctica, not for imperial glory, but to advance scientific knowledge in an era when exploration had become harnessed to national prestige.
